A warm welcome to you, With the release of this edition sees our first anniversary in business! It was 4th April 2012 that Edition 1 was released and it doesn‘t seem like a year since! In the last year The Local Leader has achieved a lot – a successful petition to save the Bradford Odeon, investigations into the Westfield shopping centre, High Point building and the rise in hotels, telling the history of Bradford through Phil Robinson‘s unique stories about buildings and past events and interviewing the Lord Mayor, Leader of the Council and other councillors.

The Local Leader has continued to serve the community in many ways – attending community events and having a real say on what should happen across the district. If you are hosting an event in the community, let us know and we can publish these on our website and in the magazine.

My biggest thanks for the last year go to you – our readers – who have helped us achieve our goal of a year in business. Since 1974, Shipley has politically been in the control of Bradford Metropolitan District Council and has therefore been linked with the town centre of Bradford. But, like Bingley and Keighley, they are still very independent towns.

Shipley has got a rich history alongside the world-famous UNESCO Heritage Site of Saltaire – designated this status in 2001. Shipley was one of the first towns in the UK to have an ―Arndale Shopping Centre‖ like Bradford‘s which is still in a dominant position in the centre of the town.

Saltaire, however, is one of the country‘s World Heritage Sites and the model village was built by Sir Titus Salt and his workers in the 19th century with Salts Mill being one of the key features.

Shipley town centre has seen an influx of independent traders over the past decade, many of which have reinvigorated the old town spirit – especially on Westgate and in the indoor market hall. The market hall is one of the town‘s better known features because of its unusual architecture. The market was built in the 1960‘s and displays brutalist architecture typical of towns across the north of England at the time. Many of the underground market traders have been trading for many decades and have remained in their positions there in

popular surroundings.

However, just down the A657, lays the village of Saltaire with its peaceful surroundings and the River Aire and LeedsLiverpool Canal flowing through. Towards the bottom of the village is Roberts Park which has a fantastic statue of Sir Titus Salt looking over the bandstand. The park boasts fantastic flowerbeds, trees and well -kept green space. Saltaire remains a firm favourite with travellers from all over Yorkshire and the UK as well as attracting visitors from all over the world with its unique architecture. Salts Mill is the biggest eye-catcher, opened on Salt‘s 50th birthday in 1853 and was the biggest employer in the area for the remainder of the 19th century. The Grade I-listed United Reformed Church on site is also a prominent building where church services still continue to this day. The houses in the village were built for the workers of the factory and were state-of-the-art to match with the unusually good working conditions in the mill.

Shipley and Saltaire remain close trading partners even 150 years since the start of the wool trades between the two.

Wherever you are, whether in Shipley or Saltaire, you are sure to find what you want, whether it is a peaceful stroll along the canal or a hand-made pie in a local bistro which is why Saltaire and Shipley remain sensational.

Towards the end of March if you had a conversation with any Bradfordian, a hot topic would be the weather.

The TV forecasts had predicted a wave of cold weather followed by some showers of snow.

But what came were two continuous days of snow building up all over the north of England causing havoc. The snow started on Friday 22nd March 2013 closing over 170 schools in Bradford and shutting numerous Aroads and Broads across the district. On the Friday night and Saturday morning, the snow continued to cause disruption closing Buses like the 613/4 in businesses Fagley had to be diverted. across the city for the second consecutive day.

A week on, snow was still present across Bradford with some roads glazed with ice making it dangerous for everyone. Wherever you went in Bradford you couldn‘t escape the

wintry weather. Some of Bradford‘s schools were still fully closed until Wednesday 27th March and opened for the Thursday to break up for the Easter holidays that day.

Up in the hills of Queensbury and Thornton, 10ft snow drifts blocked access to many houses leaving people stranded for up to 4/5 days as the roads were all still shut due to the sheer amount of the snow.

It was the coldest Snow in Undercliffe village on Saturday 23rd March Easter Sunday on record as well so the Met Office confirmed. The temperature of –12.5oC in Braemar, Aberdeenshire had beat the previous record of –9.8oC set in 1986.

These low temperatures came a year after some of the warmest temperatures we have ever seen in March with Bradford on 21oC this time last year.

It was the coldest March since 1962 but just for how much longer will these winters (and springs) continue to be affected by snow?

Bradford‘s very own Saltaire Brewery has won its second International Brewing Gold Medal for its first ever kegged ale just a few months after it was launched.

The brewery which is located on Dockfield Road near Saltaire, launched the Saltaire Gold, its first ever keg product last November and within the space of a few months has won an international award.

The Saltaire Gold is 4.0% ABV and was judged under the category of ‗the world‘s best keg ale under 4.4% ABV.‘ The quality of the brewery‘s cask ales is well recognised in Yorkshire but to receive this prestigious international award for its first kegged beer was quite an achievement that surprised the brewery staff.

Head brewer, Tony Gartland (pictured) explained, ―We designed Saltaire Gold for pubs, restaurants and bars that can‘t offer the traditional cask ales that we‘re best known for.

While we‘re very pleased with its flavour, which has also proved

popular with customers, I really didn‘t expect us to win a top international award. It‘s testament to our commitment to brew top quality, tasty, award-winning beer in cask, keg and bottle.‖ Sales Director for the firm, Ewen Gordon, warned anyone wanting to offer Saltaire Gold to their customers that the beer will have limited availability. He said, ―Despite the excitement this award is bound to create, it will be a little time before we‘re able to distribute outside of our Yorkshire heartland, but we‘d welcome any enquiries – just get in touch with us.

The bi-annual International Brewing Awards, which took three days to judge, attracts more than 1,000 entries from all over the world in six categories.

Commonly known as the ‗Brewers Oscars‘, it is judged by professional brewers who have acknowledged expertise in the tasting and commercial evaluation of beers.

Saltaire Gold 4% is a refreshing straw coloured keg ale with a creamy malt base and a sharp, spicy hop flavour from Czech hops. It has a pleasing spicy bitterness and pleasant citrus finish.

To the many people who go to the top of town, the High Point building stands as a reminder of the stalled regeneration in the city.

But when you venture inside the building, the feeling doesn‘t get any better.

High Point was built by John Brunton & Partners in 1974 costing around £1.4 million. It was purpose built on Westgate to become the new head office for the ―Bradford Permanent Building Society‖ replacing their former premises on the corner of Sunbridge Road and Godwin Street which had to be demolished for the Council‘s road widening scheme.

It had been announced in the summer of 1974 that the Permanent was to merge with the Huddersfield Building Society to become the 14th largest building society in the country with assets over £300m. It became known

as the Huddersfield & Bradford Building Society.

This new and exciting venture would need a new headquarters much larger than the previous one. The plans for High Point were approved and didn‘t take long to build. When it was opened, a T&A reader wrote that he feared ‗a hail of arrows from the slit windows.‘ But, it was in 1982 that the building society merged with the West Yorkshire BS to become Yorkshire Building Society, the second largest building society in the UK after Nationwide. The YBS took over the building and used it as offices until just over a decade ago.

In 2005, the building was bought for £1.6 million— just £200,000 more than the cost to build it originally. In 2006, planning permission was granted by Bradford Council to

convert the building from offices into a mixed use development consisting of A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 and B1 offices with residential upper floor (99 dwellings) and car parking. The Council approved the plans subject to a Section 106 agreement. Due to the recession which started, the company behind the scheme pulled out. The building has stood empty for many years now and The Local Leader has obtained pictures of its interior now. The building still remains structurally intact but there are signs of poor maintenance inside the building already.

We spoke to Mark Swiers, on behalf of Sanderson Weatherall, the business selling

the skyscraper. Mark said, ―We are acting for the owner of the building who is in turn holding it on trust for the secured lender, Bank of Ireland. The property has been marketed on the basis of ―offers invited‖ we have been quoting a price to enquirers of around £500,000 for the free hold interest, subject to contract.‖ The building is currently up for sale by Sanderson Weatherall. CAPITAL ONE CUP FINAL—SUNDAY 24TH FEBRUARY 2013 What a day for Bradford to be proud of. Forget the score for a moment and recognise the fact that a team in League Two had managed to get to the final of a major cup tournament at Wembley. The last time it happened was in 1962 when Rochdale managed to do the same. It was a day when the motorway was dominated by the colours of claret and amber—the cars decorated in the club‘s colours, the motorway service stations crammed full of supporters and the people selling scarves and hats out of the backs of their cars. Though after the 4/5 hour journey down to North London, the presence of claret and amber was even larger—the restaurants, bars and takeaway outlets were packed full of Bantams fans. Once all the fans got into the stadium, the sense of pride grew. In fact, when we were 4-0 down, the fans came together for 20 minutes of solid cheering and flag waving. Staff at Wembley train and tube station had to ask fans to confirm the score after the match because normally the losing team‘s fans don‘t cheer louder than the winners. Bradford City fans were still happy—even though the score ended 5-0 we had still got to Wembley and what a day it was. A day Bradford will never forget.

Match report by Ellis Lee The big day arrived for the 32,000 Bantams making the 200 mile trip down to London for the final. The players entered the pitch to 32,000 waving flags and scarves of claret and amber at the west side of Wembley as kick-off approached. Bradford got stuck into the action on the 19th minute as Thompson exploded down the wing past Ben Davies for Swansea. He got the cross in but no claret and amber shirt was there to finish. However, Swansea‘s winger, Wayne Routledge picked up the ball just outside the box and the counter attack was on for Swansea. Routledge found Michu who shot point blanc at Bradford goalie, Matt Duke who could only parry it out and Nathan Dyer finished the brilliant move with an easy tap in to the goal which silenced the Bradford end and the Swansea fans echoed around Wembley. Swansea then doubled their lead just before the break with new signing Michu. The Spanish forward slotted past Duke leaving Bantams fans distraught.

HT: BRADFORD 0—2 SWANSEA The fans thinking that Swansea would come out from the break and sit back and defend were very wrong as Swansea‘s Nathan Dyer grabbed his second for the Swans and put them 3-0 up. Bradford‘s chances of winning the cup were very slim. Bradford‘s day got even worse when Matt Duke brought down Swansea forward Jonathan De Guzman. The Dutchman had attempted to take it around Duke to put Swansea 4-0 up but Duke tripped him over and this resulted in a red card for Duke. Bradford‘s chances had well and truly gone.

After the debate between Nathan Dyer and De Guzman who wanted to take the penalty, De Guzman scored it—Bradford‘s substitute goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin had no chance of saving it. Bradford‘s first real shot on goal was in the 74th minute which Bradford fans replied to with cheers all around the West Side of Wembley lasting for nearly 20 minutes.

The 90th minute came and 4 additional minutes were added and on the 93rd, De Guzman got his 2nd with a brilliant move. The final scoreboard was 5-0 to Swansea.

RABIES IN GREAT HORTON 1886 Five Great Horton children were some of the first people ever to survive the horrible disease of rabies.

Rabies was a constant threat way back in the 1880‘s, especially in growing cities like Bradford, and when someone caught it—most likely through being bitten by a dog—their chances of survival were very slim. Thankfully, that began to change with the successful experiments carried out by French doctor, Louis Pasteur, who finally came up with the first human vaccine against rabies.

This discovery was to prove incredibly lucky for four boys and a girl from Great Horton whose lives were undoubtedly saved thanks to the good doctor‘s efforts!

“The idea of being bitten, the fear of being bitten or being approached by a stray dog was pretty much present and it was particularly potent in a place like Bradford. Rabies was seen as a disease of the North: Lancashire and the West Riding were seen as the rabies capitals.”

No surprise then that when one dog went on a 9 hour rampage in Bradford in 1886, things didn't look good at all for those who were bitten.

Historian, Dr Emm Barnes from Manchester University—who knows a lot of the background of this case—explains: “It bit about 20 people over the course of the day. Every so often, people lost track of where it got but one dog meeting the description of a silver-haired terrier weighing about 20lbs bit a series of people through the day before eventually cornered by a pair of labourers with shovels who dispatch it.” ―It was too late, though, for the five Bradford children among those bitten by the rabid dog: Swithenbank Turner, 10, Thomas Sharkey, 10, James Hosty, 7, Asa Moore, 6 and the so-called mother of the group, Martha Wright, 10. All were from Great Horton and they all sought

treatment as soon as possible, meaning in those days that they had their wounds cauterised (burned.) There was little else to do but wait and see what happened. Worringly, one of the others who‘d been bitten by the dog—a plumber in his thirties—developed rabies and he soon died. Time for the good people of Bradford to swing into action for the sake of the children.

“The town acted very quickly. Two days after that, a meeting of doctors and the Town Clerk decided that public funds should be made available to take these five children over to Paris for treatment to spare them the same fate—the most feared of all deaths, rabies.”

The famous Louis Pasteur had already treated patients from as far afield as Russia, Brazil and the USA—now Bradford was added to that list as the group of children headed via express train and steamboat to France to receive their treatment. Dr Barnes says this treatment is likely to have been pretty unpleasant for the children, none of whom were over 10: “At the time, the injections were into the belly through an actual incision made into the skin, not just a syringe like today. These syringes were rather more noticeable. It was a series of 12 injections, one a day. It’s quite a lot to put a child through.”

However, despite the pain, Pasteur‘s treatment was a success. All the children survived coming back to Bradford to a heroes welcome. They were showered with toys that had been given to them by the French ladies who liked to flock around Pasteur‘s office.

They were local and national celebrities!

The trip to France was a big trip. The story of the 5 children from Bradford was written about in the paper and as well as saving their lives, the trip to Paris must have been eye-opening in so many ways: ―Martha Wright was a farmer‘s daughter and she was considered to be the most well-off of the young children.

The other four families were all of very limited means and none of them had even been beyond Bradford before. The whole experience must have been a once-in-a-lifetime one!

Harrison Wainwright, the murderer, was not mentally fit to stand trial and was sent to Broadmoor where he died a few months later. door. They questioned him (at the time, not knowing what had happened at Shipley Glen.) ―You had better come with us‖ they said. ―Don‘t grab me‖ he said ―Or there will be trouble! Many people have heard of the Bradford Executioners – namely the Pierrepoint family of Clayton but many haven‘t heard of an earlier man called James Berry.

Berry was born in Kay Street, Heckmondwike and was the 13th child out of 18 for Daniel Berry and Mary Ann Kelly.

He moved into central Bradford where he landed himself a job as a policeman.

He met Sarah Ackroyd here and married her on 6th April 1874 whilst he was 22. They lived at 58 Thorpe Street in Horton, Bradford. They had two sons, Herbert and Luther.

It was a good life for the Berry‘s at the time.

James was a very restless and inquisitive man and often spoke about moral matters.

He was very caring to the people he arrested. It was in 1884 that he applied for the grimmer position of Public Executioner.

In his 8 years as executioner, he hung 131 people including 5 women. There were some mishaps including a man he couldn‘t hang – some say he was Jack the Ripper himself.

James never liked the name of Hangman – he preferred Executioner as it sounded professional.

Some years into the job things didn‘t go too well. He believed that 6 of his victims weren‘t guilty. He wasn‘t very popular with the Home Office at the time as he would become very emotional at some of the cases he had to take on. When he told them of his

He was haunted by many nightmares and became very short tempered. He started to turn to alcohol.

He toured the country giving talks and would tell stories of his exploits in local pubs.

He was the first British executioner to publish his memoirs and called it ―My Experiences as an Executioner.‖ The book is still very widely available in libraries and is still in print and remains a popular book.

He moved to 1 Bilton Street in Bradford but few people wanted to live near him. As a very intelligent man, he decided to buy the entire row of houses, occupy one and rent out the others.

One day in Forster Square Railway Station, he had a complete nervous breakdown and confessed his state of mind to a total stranger. This led to his conversion to Christianity. Berry became an Evangelist preacher at Bowland Street Mission in Bradford in 1894. He said ―I was lost but Jesus found me.‖ He was a strong campaigner against capital punishment up until his death in 1913.

There is no grand monument to the executioner in the cemetery. It is sad to say that his grave has been neglected – hidden under a pile of leaves and almost forgotten.

It is a century this October since he died. It would be nice for some lasting memorial in recognition of his achievements, beliefs and fight against capital punishment.

Match report by Ellis Lee City started the game in 11th place only three points behind fellow promotion pushers Southend United.

Southend came into this game with a new manager after sacking Paul Sturrock two days before. The Shrimp‘s managerial position was filled by Phil Brown and this was his first game as manager. Bradford started off well with a good move from Zavon Hines whose pass found Garry Thompson who then raced forward to the box but was flagged offside. Gary Jones (Bradford skipper) then came close with a 25 yard shot but Southend‘s keeper Paul Smith has it covered. The Shrimp‘s Ellis Lee captain then nearly scored as Bilel Mohsni‘s magnificent effort outside hit the post of McLaughlin‘s goal. However, United‘s top scorer, Gavin Tomlin wasn‘t going to miss as he tapped the ball in from the rebound. GOAL! 01. 30 seconds later, Britt Asombalonga doubled the Shrimp‘s advantage with a cool tap into the left hand corner past McLaughlin. GOAL! 0-2.

Kyel Reid (Bradford) took a well placed free kick into the Southend box but Sean Clohessy (Southend) had it cleared out for a corner. Hines then hit the bar for the Bantams after he got around Southend full-back Luke Prosser but it went out for a goal kick. Asombalonga nearly got his second of the afternoon with a shot 20 yards out however McLaughlin parried out.

HT: Bradford City 0 – 2 Southend United Bradford got straight into the attack early on in the second half when Kyel Reid sprinted down the wing and got a cross in but James Hanson (Bradford) couldn‘t find the back of the net. James Meredith‘s (Bradford) cross on the left hand side found Hines just inside the area which Hines finished with a wonderful half volley into the Southend goal. GOAL! 1-2.

Southend tried to reply instantly from a corner taken by Kevan Hurst which found Tomlin outside the area who drilled into the box but McLaughlin had it caught well.

Tamika Mkandawire (Southend) then hit the post with a curling effort around centre-back Andrew Davies (Bradford) but Rory McArdle (Bradford) had it cleared out.

Substitute Alan Connell (Bradford) then made a decent impact with a shot firing into the top corner of Paul Smith‘s goal but Smith got a touch hitting it out for a corner. Nahki Wells (Bradford) comes off the bench and assists James Hanson on the far post with a cross which Hanson headed into the bottom corner of the net.

Eccleshill Mechanics Institute, Stone Hall Road, Eccleshill, Bradford, BD2 2EW

Bradford received its first market charter on the 20th April 1251. The then Lord of the Manor, Edmund De Lacy, had been granted the charter from the King, Henry III. Just over half a century later, Edmund‘s son, Henry, was granted a second charter for a market and fair.

The market in Bradford was originally held in the grounds of the Cathedral (then the Bradford Parish Church) until it was later transferred to the bottom of Westgate at the junction of Ivegate and Kirkgate. An ancient market cross was on this site—the top of which is said to have been broken off by Puritans in the English Civil War. In 1782, Bradford‘s market was deemed inadequate for the growing population in the city. But it wasn't until 1801 when Benjamin Rawson, the new Lord of the Manor moved the market to New Street and renamed the road ‗Market Street.‘ A new market hall was built and the market was held there until 1824.

It was then moved and split between Kirkgate, Darley Street and Rawson Place. Kirkgate Market was held on the Manor‘s grounds where a new hall was built and the area surrounding it was used as an open-air market.

In 1866, the Corporations Act was passed in Parliament and allowed for manorial and market rights to be leased. Miss Elizabeth Rawson, Lady of the Manor, leased her rights to Bradford Council for 99 years charging them £5,000 a year. In 1870, the market hall and Manor was demolished and Kirkgate Market built. Between then and 1920, James Street Market, John Street Market, Rawson Market and St. James‘s Wholesale Market were opened.

Kirkgate Market was the centrepiece of markets in Yorkshire in the late 19th century and majority of the 20th century.

Kirkgate Market was completed in 1872 at the cost of £83,381 (the cost of the bottom half only, the top half opened in 1878.) It was designed by Bradford‘s famous architects, Lockwood & Mawson who also designed City Hall, St. George‘s Hall and the Wool Exchange.

The market traded throughout most of the 20th century and remained popular with people from Bradford and throughout the county.

But, in May 1970, the Council approved a £3.25 million proposal from Town & City properties to build an ‗Arndale Centre.‘ Whilst many liked the idea of a new market, many didn‘t like the fact they wouldn‘t still be trading in the same stalls as their parents and grandparents.

The market was renovated in two halves to allow stallholders to continue trading. Work began in 1973 and was completed in 1976. It has been refurbished twice since, in 1988 and 2001.
