WELCOME TO THE SEVENTH EDITION! Welcome to the seventh edition of The Local Leader – now also incorporating the Bingley Rural magazine!

If you haven’t seen The Local Leader before, you may be interested to know more about it. The publication has been run by James and Megan, two 15-year-old students from Titus Salt School, for the past two years. Money raised by the mag goes back to the school to invest in future student projects. The Local Leader is available to pick up from local businesses throughout the area.

The Bingley Rural magazine has been running since 2007, bringing news and articles to Bingley and the surrounding villages.

We are proud to be merging these two popular magazines and reaching new audi-

ences in Bingley, Wilsden, Harden, Cottingley and Cullingworth. The Local Leader is also pleased to welcome Lisa Firth, former editor of the Bingley Rural, to the team in the role of Features Editor.

The Local Leader will now be producing 8000 copies quarterly, to be distributed throughout the Bradford, Bingley and Shipley communities.

PEDAL POWER! James and Megan of The Local Leader catch up with an inspirational local teacher who cycled from his Baildon school to his parents’ charity in Romania in order to raise vital funds for underprivileged children.

It all began in 1996, when nine-yearold Josh Face from the Gateway Christian Centre in Tong sent out a Christmas shoebox through the Shoebox Appeal that included his address.

Eighteen months later a letter arrived for Josh from a young boy called Radu Delean, who lived in the rural village of Sardu in Romania – around 300 miles away from the country’s capital Bucharest. Through further correspondence, a friendship began between the two boys and in July 2000, Josh, his mother and Alistair – then a youth worker at the charity – travelled to Sardu to meet the family. Further visits took place over the next two years and it became evident that the children and young people in the village had a vital need for resources.

In 2004, Alistair’s father Bob McDonald, the then minister of Gateway, and his wife Edith purchased a house and land in Sardu. The building was redeveloped to accommodate mission teams and given the name “Casa Sperantei” - House of Hope.

In 2009, Alistair McDonald, who teaches Geography at Titus Salt School in Baildon, took the decision to do an unsupported solo cycle ride from the school across 1300 miles in the hope of raising £7000 for his parents' charity, which works with underprivileged young people in rural Romania.

Bob and Edith had been running the charity out of their front room for five years before they realised that they needed more space in order to provide the best-quality activities and support for disadvantaged local children with expansion into a new building or community centre considered the best suggestion.

Alistair spent his longest cycling day between Holland and Germany: this was on day three when he cycled 105 miles.

He is proud that he achieved his goal of raising £7000 in donations to go towards the building of the centre. “I managed to raise £2000 in small donations from local people and another £5000 in one large donation. In terms of advertising the event, the school [at which he has been teaching for nine years] did a lot of publicity for it and this was largely effective.”

So would he do anything like it again?

“Absolutely!” he says without a second thought. “I would absolutely love to something like it again but it would be more difficult now I’m married and expecting a kid later this year - going away for three or four weeks wouldn’t be as easy these days! Since the big ride to Romania, about two years ago I cycled from Land’s End to John o’ Groats with a friend and that was also a great experience.”

He arrived in Romania on 4 August 2009 and the money he raised contributed to the new children’s centre, which was completed and opened in April 2010. The centre now helps between 150 and 200 disadvantaged children and teenagers every week and is much better able to cope with the increased demand than the former headquarters in his parents'

LEARNING THROUGH A LENS The Local Leader’s James & Megan chat with inspirational teachers Matthew Burton and Michael Steer, who spill all on everything from what it was like being filmed to Michael being allergic to the school!

Following the success of the hit show, we went to Thornhill and interviewed Matthew Burton and Michael Steer, two of the teachers who lived their lives on camera during the eight weeks of filming.

It was the show everyone was talking about. If you didn’t watch it, the chances were you had at least heard about it.

That show was Educating Yorkshire, a fly-on-the-wall reality show-cum-documentary focusing on eight weeks in the lives of teachers and students at Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Both have been teaching at the school for many years - Matthew for eight and Michael for thirteen - and times have changed since they started working there.

Both agreed that the change in student attitudes over the years has been one of their greatest achievements as teachers.

Michael told us, “The school had troubles when I started - in fact when I came here on my teacher training, my university tutor was quite apologetic about sending me! But in the last few years, we've really begun to build a relationship with the kids here.”

It was a very different environment that first motivated Michael and Matthew to go into teaching. Matthew was inspired at school by his English teacher, Mrs Bannister, who, although he says she was “nothing like I am now in terms of a teacher”, could keep a class engaged with the subject matter in a way that few others could. He then went on to university and was coming to the end of his course when many of his friends applied to do a PGCE. It was at this moment that he realised everything didn’t just work out of its own accord and he would have to find something to do after university! “I hadn’t really thought about the endgame and was working in Burtons, of all places! The choice was either to go into full-time work or to go into teaching.” And with his bubbly personality and strong work ethic, Matthew decided that teaching was the way forward for him. “I didn’t get on the PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education, the qualification required to become a teacher after university) the first year I applied, and as a person who doesn’t cope well with rejection I wondered what I should do with myself. I worked for a mortgage company for a year and decided I didn’t want to do it again, so reapplied again for PGCE and was accepted. This was probably among the top three decisions I've made in my life!”

Improved relations between students and teachers, it appears, is one factor influencing the excellent results now being achieved at GCSE level: in 2010 the school reached over 50% grades A*-C, including English and Maths (commonly used as an indicator of a school's achievement). “Kids didn’t want to do well at the Michael's journey, however, was comschool when I started, and those who did pletely different. ent for maths, he was already being taught secondarylevel maths while still in primary school, often seated in a room on his own whilst other students were in their regular maths lessons.

He went on to study A-Level Theatre Studies, Astrophysics and Maths post-16, with drama being his favourite lesson.

Michael laughs while remembering RE lessons at his Catholic secondary school. “I was chased out of my RE lessons by a militant nun for going to a Catholic school and not being a Catholic!”

Inspired by his drama teachers, Mr Chewins and Mrs Clarke, he decided to take up Theatre Studies and enjoyed this a lot - “though my love for drama never became a career. First of all, I became a banker, but I hated the way people worked so much that one day I stormed out in a blaze of glory! Then I realised I had no career. My two other options were to go into the police force or become a teacher. When I spoke to the police, I wasn’t too sure about the appeal of sorting out drunks on street corners so I opted for teaching.”

The first episode of Educating Yorkshire aired on Channel 4 on 5th September 2013, pulling in 4.76 million people.

Asked if they think the quality of teaching was affected, Michael and Matthew both immediately say not.

Michael says, “Matthew usually goes around getting children to make and wear badger masks, and he goes wandering around on tables.

That is just the way we are in class. Just like I have to prat around with stupid voices to engage more kids in class because there are genuinely students out there who are not interested in English and Maths.”

Matthew agrees: “I saw people on Twitter saying that it must have been set up and that the teachers weren’t natural. There were a few teachers that did their hair for the first couple of days (obviously not me!) but apart from that we all acted quite naturally.”

Had the show had an impact on pupils' behaviour around the school, we went on to ask? Matthew thought so - but for the better. “In this academic year, we have never known such a small number of behaviour incidents.” However, he admits this isn’t entirely down to the TV series. A new, smarter uniform and new policies implemented throughout the school, as well as the documentary, have all led to much better-behaved students. “The show did have a galvanising impact on

both students in the school and the local community as a whole. Kids were walking around with their chests puffed out and parents are now proud to send their kids here. It has also helped some kids with their confidence, which is always great!

And in fact, some children who were shown to be misbehaving on national television went to their teachers and apologised to them!” Michael has a slightly different view, however. “I don’t think it changed pupil behaviour much at all. In fact, if anything, it took teachers more time to get used to the cameras than students. We were all going around waving at them and I was thinking to myself stop waving at the cameras! And I’m going to nick Matthew’s phrase here, but the kids were ‘walking a foot taller’ when the programme went out!”

As the series became popular, viewers began to appreciate the role of teachers more, something which both Matthew and Michael are immensely proud of. Matthew says that the public gaining a greater appreciation of teachers would be “one of the best holistic outcomes”, and surely the repeatedly high viewing figures support this. But according to Matthew, “we don’t go into teaching thinking about TV viewing figures, but it was nice to know that so many people were tuning in each week. And those figures were beyond both our and Channel 4’s wildest expectations.”

“The Musharraf incident” referred to was surely one of the high points of the series.

Musharraf Asghar, a student at the school, was able to read out a poem despite having a speech disorder from a young age.

Matthew says this was a highlight of his career. “It is hard to look past the Mushy incident because so much was made of it.

I didn’t realise what it was at the time and the striking impact it had had on him.

It brought me to tears when I watched it back and when, the following day, he walked down the corridor, exclaiming 'I spoke, I spoke'!”

It wasn’t just another GCSE achievement: it meant an absolute world to them both.

Matthew says that when his baby daughter Olivia was born on 8th December, the first thing he did when he got her home was show her the Christmas special of the show on TV. “If there’s ever a message to send to a child, it is to see someone with such grace, who in such adversity can demonstrate the ability to overcome it.

And I’d like to think it lodged back in her mind somewhere.” Though Michael points out, “Mushy still doesn’t walk around talking like an articulate country gent!”

On transmission they both say that watching themselves back for the first time wasn’t great – in fact Michael branded it horrific! He goes on, “The first scene was of me shouting at a child and I’m not a shouter at all. The day shown was when I was going into hospital and I hadn’t slept for a week. I had to sort out a Maths exam and there were kids panicking about it; a boy had just been excluded and his friends were on a mutinous rampage, and on top of that my leg was massive. I had to slit my suit trouser leg down the back just to fit my leg in and to top it all off I fell and my hand split open. There was a supply teacher covering a class and he kept sending kids out: I decided that before I left I had to sort it out and the only way to do this at the time was to shout at the kid. And that was the first bit shown!”

And that wasn’t the end of it! When the second episode went out Michael was actually ill for the majority of his time on screen. “I got some stick for not helping the kids as much as normal but I was genuinely really ill. To the point where the doctors at the hospital said if I had left it much longer I could have lost a leg or even died.”

As a result of the show, Matthew’s mum has apparently intervened with his ward-

robe! “The day after the first show went out, my mum went out and bought me some bigger shirts because apparently the ones I was wearing were too small! Looking back, I should probably have had a haircut too, but I wouldn’t have done anything differently because that’s the way I am normally and the production company were interested in us for who we really were. My work ethic hasn’t changed either and neither has my professionalism.”

And would they be filmed again? If it was with the same producers they have come to know and trust, then “without a shadow of a doubt, yeah,” says Matthew. He adds, “The opportunities that have arisen for the kids on the back of it have been incredible. The number of professional people who have wanted to help out at the school has been just phenomenal.”

Only a couple of days before we visited them, the Huddersfield-born Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker had been in doing a drama workshop after meeting the teachers at the RTS awards. “She loved the programme and wanted to help us,” says Matthew. Michael agrees: “If a shady guy in a mac and trilby came up to us and said he wanted to film me for a week, I think I’d say 'no thanks', but because of the level of trust we had with the production company, if it was something with them

Bradford chippy Towngate Fisheries has been crowned the winner of the “Best Chippy Chips” award by the National Potato Council, showcasing their talent in the field. They won the award for the crispiest, fluffiest chips in Yorkshire, winning the public vote.

They have now won the award, run in recognition of Chip Week 2014, for the second year running.

Customers of the scientist-turnedfryer Mark Drummond voted in large numbers to ensure a victory for the local fish shop, which is no stranger to awards. The fisheries were also the first in West Yorkshire to be granted

the “Fish & Chip Quality Award” back in 2011, retaining the award in 2013.

BRADFORD 10K RUNNERS BREAK RECORD In March, over 1,700 took part in the city’s biggest annual road race.

More than 1,700 people braved the cold and gusty conditions to run the Epilepsy Action Bradford 10K. The event, which took place on Sunday 16 March for the seventh time, raises much-needed funds for the Tesfaye Debele Yeadon-based Taken by Phil Robinson charity.

The winner of last year’s race,

Tesfaye Debele, won once again with a time of 31 mins 42 seconds, and Danielle Hodgkinson took the women’s title with a new record: 35 mins 32 seconds.

More than 6,000 people have taken part in the run since its creation, raising over a quarter of a million pounds for the charity. Epilepsy Action supports 600,000 people with the condition in the UK. As a member of The Beautiful South, Dave Hemingway sang vocals on a string of hits including 'Don't Marry Her', 'Rotterdam' and 'A Little Time' during the band's 20-year career. Their greatest hits compilation, 'Carry on Up the Charts', was one of the fastest-selling UK albums ever. Now performing with other former Beautiful South members as part of nine-piece lineup The South, Dave talks to The Local Leader about his early career as a drummer with The Housemartins, how the music industry has changed over the years, and the band's extraordinary longevity.

Tell me how it all started for you. How did you find yourself drumming for The Housemartins back in the early days?

That's going back a few years! At the time I was playing in various bands around Hull.

There was a pretty good music scene then: everyone seemed to know everyone else, and everyone seemed to be in a band. The Housemartins were the first real band from Hull to break out of the local scene and make it nationally. Their drummer, Hugh Whitaker, was a friend of mine who’d been in my class at school, and for some reason which is still not too clear Hugh decided to leave – just after the band got to number one with 'Caravan of Love'. He basically put my name forward, which was a big stroke of luck on my behalf: one of those things that really changes your life. I didn't even have to audition!

At what point did you start moving more towards vocals rather than drumming?

Well, The Housemartins were always a fourpiece vocal outfit because we used to do acapella songs live in the set. We used to do three-part harmonies behind Paul [Heaton] as the lead singer, so it was important that everybody sang. The four of us all had a secondary part to play, vocally.

So you could have gone down the barbershop quartet route?

[Laughs] Well, yeah, perhaps not as naff as that! But it's not that far away in theory from that sort of style. It's like a sort of barbershop quartet with instruments. It was one of the things that set the band apart from other bands. I always liked the fact that we could do acapella songs now and again, it was a thing that was a bit unique to us at that time. Anyway, I got a few more parts in songs, including a lead vocal part in 'Build', which was another single we had. And when The Housemartins finished, when Paul and Stan [Cullimore] had had enough of that band in ’88, Paul asked me if I wanted to be involved in the next project, which turned out to be The Beautiful South. I thought he meant as a drummer, but he had this idea that he wanted me to be more of a vocalist.

So it was his decision really, not mine.

Do you miss drumming?

Well... yeah, but it's a different thing really.

Drumming was a bit of a shield for me from the audience, you know. You sit behind the drums and you don't worry so much about

being on stage. But when you're a singer, out front, you haven't got that safety net: you feel you're a bit more exposed, up there to be shot down. So it was a transition, a bit of a change – well, a lot of a change really, and it took me a long time to come to terms with it in lots of ways, to be comfortable with it.

Did you know the other band members at all?

I was on nodding terms with them but that's about it. Hugh was the one I knew, I'd grown up with him. But everybody seemed to know everybody else in them days, bandwise. I think I got in the band because it was more important that you got on with people socially than how good you were. Obviously you had to be good enough, but you didn't have to be a world-beater or anything!

Obviously back then the music scene was quite different to how things are now.

Bands worked their way up through the club and pub circuit, whereas in the digital age it's much easier for new acts to get their stuff out there through YouTube, Facebook etc. What are your thoughts on that?

Yeah, it's totally different, as you say. Everyone goes for the old X-Factor route, don't they? They want instant fame and instant recognition. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing: personally, me, I'm old school so I'm bound to feel it was better in the old days. You worked your way on the road, sleeping in the backs of vans, travelling up and down motorways at four in the morning, getting all knackered and skint! Stuff like that. Borrowing equipment from each other.

And when you go through all that, I don't know, it maybe makes it a bit more... pleasant, in a way, to feel you've earned that success. It's not as hard as it was.

So you wouldn't be tempted to be a judge on one of those sorts of reality talent shows, if you were invited?

No – first of all they wouldn't ask me!

[Laughs] But... nah, I think it's a bit – I've never liked competitions, bands against bands, you know. I think it's a bit cruel really. Everyone's got something to offer in the end. But then the music industry is that way, it's never changed in that respect: it's always been a case of chew you up, spit you out.

And are there any current bands that you like? Any favourites?

The Arctic Monkeys, obviously I think they're brilliant – one of the best bands out there at

then that's why they're there and you know what you're in for. At a festival, they're not necessarily there to see you, they're there to see other bands. So it's more a case of “Ok then, let's see if we can impress someone who hasn't seen us before, see if we can make them walk away saying 'Oh, they're not Is he into your music as well?

Yeah, good. It's different not having a record company, having to do it all ourselves: that was quite a challenge. It made things a bit more difficult – well, a lot more difficult, but we were pleased with the outcome and the tracks that we've managed to get out there. I think it stands up well, alongside everything else that we've done, especially considering we've had to do it all from scratch. It was quite an achievement in that respect.

views. How did you feel about the response to the album?

Ok, I've got one last question and then I'll let you go! The Beautiful South had a lot of staying power as a band, lasting nearly 20 years, and that spirit now seems to have carried over into The South. With a lot of groups splitting after just a few years, what would you say is your secret?

Well, I think in The Beautiful South we didn't take ourselves too seriously and we were just a bunch of mates in the end. In 20 years, I can seriously say that I can count the

major arguments we had on one hand, which over that length of time in such a closed working environment is not bad. People tend to get on your nerves after a bit don't they?

But we had a good setup and didn't argue much – it's good to be friends, that always helps. And you need a bit of luck as well! As you say, 20 years in the music business is a long time to play without breaking up or falling out. We did ok I think!

RESEARCHING MILITARY MATTERS Clive Harrison looks into how to uncover the histories of military ancestors, in particular those who served in the two world wars.

In the last issue of the Bingley Rural [Nov/Dec 2013], I concentrated on researching service records and medal rolls for those men who participated in the Great War. In many cases these may not have survived or may be difficult to find.

If, however, you know which regiment your relative served in, you may be able to get an idea of which battles he fought in by visiting www.1914-1918.net, the website of The Long Long Trail. This free site provides information on all the regiments and their battalions, as well as which divisions they belonged to and battles various divisions were involved in.

If you are researching a fatality, www.cwgc.org is a good place to discover some basic details. Another, which provides similar information, is www.forces-warrecords.co.uk. Although the title of the site gives the impression that service records may be available, it concentrates on information relating to casualties. In addition to the information available on the Commonwealth War Graves website, it gives details of the regiment the soldier was serving in at the time of his death. This is a subscription website, but beware! If you sign up for one month be sure to change your profile (untick ‘auto-renew membership’), otherwise the site will take a subscription fee every month.

This website proved very informative to me in researching an uncle who died in World War Two. He was a sergeant in the RAF and, as well as the circumstances of his death, the website provided the type, mark, code and serial number of the aircraft.

Most regiments have their own website. For example, www.dwr.org.uk is the website of the Duke Of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment. They also usually have their own regimental museum, which may be worth a

visit. The Duke Of Wellington’s is at the Bankfield Museum, Halifax.

If these resources don’t satisfy your curiosity, a visit to the National Archives at Kew could be fruitful. There you can view the war diaries of all battalions, which will give day-by-day details of activities. Whilst unusual for servicemen to be named, officers are regularly referred to by name.

If you have an ancestor who served in the armed forces after 1920, then you may be able to obtain his/her service record. The www.veterans-uk.info website will provide all the information you will need, as well as downloadable forms. If you are not the next of kin, you will need their authority to be supplied with the service record. There is a charge of £30 for the supply of these records so you need to be sure you have the correct information, such as full name, date of birth, address, regiment and service number. Supply of any records may take up to 12 months.

After the First World War, any medals to which a serviceman was entitled were automatically sent to his last known address or, if deceased, his next of kin. This happened well after the end of hostilities. After World War Two, the system was different.

Medals were not issued until 1948 and then only to those servicemen/women who applied for them. Many service personnel had other things on their mind after the war and therefore many did not apply for their medals. Last year I applied for, and received, my father’s WW2 medals and I have recently applied for my mother’s. The www.veterans-uk.info website provides guidelines and downloadable forms for WW2 medal applications. Again, if you are not next of kin you will need their authorisation. There is no charge for the supply of any unclaimed medals, but you may have to wait up to 12 months for their issue.

EDITOR’S PETITION TO SAVE LOCAL CENTRE The Local Leader’s Editor starts an online petition to save treatment centre.

A petition by the teenage editor of this magazine to save his local NHS treatment centre from potential closure has drawn in widespread support, collecting 1,700 signatures so far.

James Slater, Editor of The Local Leader, started the petition in response to a report stating that the Eccleshill NHS Treatment Centre, which is near his home, could close on 7 July. Staff were recently told that they might not have a job when CareUK’s contract expires later this year.

The NHS Bradford Districts CCG, which funds the centre, stated that no one was in place to run services there after that date. The centre offers many different medical services including orthopaedics, MRI and CT scanning and X-rays.

As part of the tender process, CareUK had to submit a new bid to continue running the centre but the CCG has said its bid, along with two others, weren’t acceptable. The treatment centre was opened in July 2005, at a cost of £6m, on the site of the former Eccleshill Upper School.

Eccleshill Community Hospital and Ashcroft Surgery are not affected.

Every parent of secondary-aged children knows how stressful preparing for GCSE and A-Level exams can be, and none moreso than Anita Basic, mum of three teenagers and ex-deputy head of a large, successful Bradford secondary school.

Anita decided to quit the classroom last year and recently launched Exampion – a private tuition and school support business aimed initially at supporting English and Maths. It does exactly what it says on the tin – preparing young people for the dreaded exam season by focusing active, lively sessions on exam criteria and making sure that students really know what is expected of them.

As an experienced English teacher, Anita was quick to realise that teaching content is one thing but actual exam training (as she prefers to call it) is a completely different ballgame. Anita tells us: "The Government seem dead set on ensuring all

young people leave full-time education with a Level 2 (GCSE-standard) qualification in English and Maths.

Employers seem to be complaining that this generation lack communication and numerical skills that make them attractive in the job market. I wanted to put my skills to good use and do what I can to help achieve this goal. We all need a bit of extra help at some point in our lives and it’s a competitive world out there.”

The sessions run from a purpose-built studio in Wilsden on a small group basis (usually three to six students). Parents/ carers and children are invited to attend a FREE in-depth assessment to identify their needs. Every Exampion student is asked to complete a "Learning Log" at the end of each session and parents receive efeedback afterwards. THE RETURN OF WILSDEN GALA! Community group gets popular local gala back in the summer schedules!

Wilsden Gala has been a village institution for decades, but has suffered a spate of cancellations in recent years as it has struggled to recruit volunteers for its organising committee. However, now a new committee with a record number of members has stepped forward to restore the gala to its former glory. Relocating from the park to Wilsden Cricket Field, where it was held for much of its history, the event will take place on Sunday 20 July 2014 from 2pm, following the traditional fancy dress procession through the village.

Previous gala themes have ranged from Toytown to Best of British, but this year the theme chosen by the committee is The Big W. Fancy dress ideas range from Wizards to Wall-E, and we look forward to seeing people getting creative! There will be prizes for Best Fancy Dress (Girl), Best Fancy Dress (Boy), Best Walking Tableau (Group), Best Float (Group), Best Bike/Scooter/Skateboard (Individual) and Best Pram/Buggy (Individual). Bradford Council is asking people to get creative by making bunting and artwork to decorate the route of the Tour de France when it comes through the district in the summer.

They would like to hear from any groups or individuals, young or old, from across the whole of the district who are a dab hand with a needle and thread, a pair of knitting needles or a paintbrush and who would like to get involved. It could be knitting or sewing bunting, or making flags and banners to welcome people to

the towns and villages along the route.

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, executive member of employment, skills and culture, said: "There are some really creative people in Bradford and we would love for them to be able to get involved. This is just one way in which people can be part of creating the atmosphere for when the world’s largest free sporting event comes to our district."

By Sharon Dominik You may think that there’s oodles of time left before the summer holidays: it’s barely even Easter!

Yet here at Wilsden Primary School, we are already in the starting blocks for what promises to be another exciting (if a little exhausting) rundown to the summer.

April: Easter is always a lovely time in school, with our Reception children and their Easter bonnet parade to look forward to.

May: After our Easter break we have our thoughts firmly fixed on the SATs tests: Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 6 will undergo their formal assessments to see how they are doing compared to children of the same age nationally. It’s always a nail-biting time for our children and families but we try to make things as relaxed and “normal” as possible.

June: Trips to look forward to! Residentials to Windermere and Robinwood (Todmorden), plus lots of day trips to Nell Bank, Skipton Castle, the Yorkshire Mining Museum and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

July: After all that excitement, we can start to unwind - but just a bit, as we still have lots of things planned before the end of term.

Our Year 6 leavers have a performance to do for their parents, we have our end-of year/leavers' disco to survive, not forgetting our red carpet event of the year: our annual Governors’ Awards Evening. All finished off by our final leavers’ assembly, when there will not be a dry eye in the house!

The group are still tirelessly working to raise funds for their new minibus, and are being supported once again by the truly brilliant City of Bradford Brass Band and its musical director Lee Skipsey.

The concert last year was an overwhelming success and raised over £1,200. Our sincere thanks to everyone who supported us.

Another marvellously varied programme is being planned, which will be presented by Lee with the usual flair and enthusiasm.

With even more awards under its belt than last year, the band is in tremendous form and you can be assured of a great night of music.

A YEAR ON THE ALLOTMENT! John Bartle of the Wilsden Gardening Association tells us what it is like to spend 2013 on his allotment, plus his top tips on planting!

I have had an allotment in Wilsden since Peggy Tordoff very kindly gave up one of the fields she rented from Bradford Council so that Wilsden Gardening Association could turn it into 26 allotments in 1976. 2013 has to rank as one of the most productive years since then. The year on the allotment never really has a starting point since there is always something to do, but January saw me recovering from a hip replacement operation. Fortunately I knew that it was likely to happen, so the allotment was in decent condition because of the efforts of my wife, son and myself in 2012. In the greenhouse, onions were planted from seeds and stocks of compost bought ready for the coming season. It may have been a good year for the allotment, but in 2013 the quality of the compost left much to be desired. Probably because of the move away from peat, some of the commercially available stuff was very poor.

January saw the delivery of seeds ordered in the previous November - all bought at a huge discount courtesy of our association.

January is also a good time to plant parsley indoors from seed. It is slow to germinate but will get going in a few weeks and is always useful in the garden.

Sprouts and leeks were still being dug and in February it was time for the seed potatoes.

These were placed "eyes up" in seed trays or egg boxes, in a cool dry light place for chitting. By April, the eyes had grown about 2cm and the potatoes were ready for planting out in trenches and then "earthed up".

March was busy as usual. Seeds such as sprouts, cabbage, cauliflowers, kale, broccoli, beetroot, perpetual beet, etc. were planted in trays and modules. Weather permitting, it was also time to plant onion sets.

I always plant Sturon, a round-bottomed onion which will grow to about 8oz or 225g.

It is now possible to grow the red onion Red Baron from seed, but these are more easily grown from sets and are great in salads.

Garlic should also be planted at this time, though I usually do it in October to give it a winter season, which seems to help.

The area to be used for sprouts, cabbage, etc. was also limed in March. Brassicas prefer an alkaline soil, and lime is thought to prevent club root. Recently, several brassicas have been selectively bred and they are

resistant to club root - the appliance of science? During April, broad beans were planted directly into the land and marrows, pumpkins and courgette were planted in the greenhouse. The chitted potatoes were planted in the prepared trenches and peas were sown outside.

Once the risk of frost was past in May, the allotment was planted up with the plants grown in the greenhouse or cold frame. The last frost in Wilsden can usually be expected up to 15 May. Nothing can be guaranteed but it is a fair rule of thumb. May to June sees the onset of the gardeners’ war! Nature will beat the gardeners to the crops given half a chance. Carrot fly, large white butterfly, club root, American sawfly, aphids, blight, onion neck rot, cabbage root fly: the list is endless. Different gardeners have different approaches to all these. In Wilsden, pigeons are a pest so protection with netting is essential for many plants.

A few years ago, we had a large family of pheasants causing havoc. Last year I used nets, powders, sprays and biological methods with varying degrees of success.

July was a good month. A wonderful crop of fruit. Gooseberries, redcurrants and raspberries were amazing and some of the allotment holders were taking home thousands of pounds' worth of strawberries at Wimbledon prices!

August saw us digging potatoes. What a crop! I always grow a variety called Kestrel.

slug resistant and it is to a large extent blight resistant as well. This year I averaged two and a half kilograms per plant. Just imagine - a whole supermarket bag of beautiful potatoes from just one potato! What a crop! At the same time, cauliflower, cabbages, courgettes and spinach were all picked - the freezer was rapidly filling up.

By September, the onions had fattened and the tops were dying back. They were lifted, dried and strung together or stored separately. Runner beans were in full flower and the last of the courgettes were picked. Marrows and pumpkins were also lifted so as to avoid an early frost. Though rare, I do remember a frost in September some years ago which ruined the chrysanthemum part of the Wilsden Show.

Once September and the show season was over, much of what followed was getting ready for 2014. Digging, weeding, mulching and general maintenance. Swede, sprouts, spinach and leeks were all still available to harvest.

In October, the seed catalogues arrived and it was time to plan 2014 in the light of the year's experiences, looking out for new varieties as well as old favourites.

In 1977, we installed mains water from the main road by St Matthew’s Church all the way up to the allotments, so at the end of the month I turned the water off and

drained it down to avoid burst pipes. It will be turned back on in March.

Three allotments changed hands throughout the year, but those were soon filled by keen, enthusiastic tenants. It is always nice to be able to let a plot to someone who may have been on a waiting list for years. Many people start as complete novices. One thing to remember about allotments is that there are lot of knowledgeable people out there many know as much, if not more, than the popular media people and this advice is free! People learn quickly and novices soon grow wonderful crops.

So we have come full circle: who knows what 2014 will bring? But one thing is for sure - it will not be the same as any one of my past 37 years of gardening. That is what makes it such fun.

When Sainsbury’s bought the old Bradford & Bingley Headquarters in Bingley, I was absolutely delighted – along with local businesses and residents. This scheme had the potential to transform the town centre in Bingley not only with the additional jobs it would create – although they would have been very welcome – but also with the potential increase in footfall this would bring to Bingley town centre, in turn helping the other businesses already there.

Last year I met with Sainsbury’s on a number of occasions to keep updated on their decisionmaking process and to keep the pressure on them. Although I was in favour of the development, my main concern was to ensure that a decision was made regarding the site and that it was not left derelict and abandoned for years, and having spent the previous 12 years before entering Parliament working for a large supermarket chain, I was becoming increasingly concerned that the project was stalling.

To ensure uncertainty was not created over the site, at each meeting I pushed for Sainsbury’s to make a decision one way or the other, even if it was to pull out. I asked them to go away to see if they could make the scheme financially viable and if they couldn’t then to sell it on to someone who could. We agreed that a decision would be made by the Autumn. As we all know, they came back to me and said they had decided to withdraw from the site.

Although their decision was not to build a supermarket on this site, Sainsbury’s did, however, agree at that meeting that they would demolish the old Bradford & Bingley building in January 2014, clear up the site and sell it on to another buyer – even if this was another competing supermarket, so long as this was the best price.

When I chased up Sainsbury’s in the New Year to ask when they would start the demolition of the building, they told me that bats had been discovered in the building and that the demolition would have to await that being sorted out, and that remains their current position.

I would like to reassure all my constituents that I will continue to hold Sainsbury’s accountable to their commitment, and I will persistently press them to demolish and sell on the site as they agreed at the first possible opportunity. I

will also expect Bradford Council to assist in giving Sainsbury’s no excuses not to fulfil their promises.

At the time of writing I am shortly due to meet with the Council Leader to see how we can work together to ensure that progress is made; I will be Former Bradford & Bingley HQ meeting with Picture courtesy of Geoff Tynan Sainsbury’s and I have written to the chief executive of Sainsbury’s to ask him for a new guaranteed timeline for carrying out the work they promised would be completed by now.

I know there will be many people in Bingley who are frustrated by the lack of progress on this site, and this has been exacerbated by the fact that Sainsbury’s have now applied for a licence for a convenience store on Bingley high street.

Many people have contacted me to say that Sainsbury’s should be boycotted until they fulfil their promises regarding the site of the old Bradford & Bingley headquarters. It is a sentiment I fully understand.

However, the success of a Sainsbury’s convenience store in Bingley town centre will also depend on the additional footfall a redeveloped Bradford & Bingley building can bring to the town, and we must persuade Sainsbury’s that it is in the best interests of their new shop and for their local reputation that they do the right thing by the people of Bingley.

I will keep working closely, as I have throughout, with the Bingley Chamber of Trade, the local councillors in Bingley and the leadership of Bradford Council, and work energetically and persistently to do all I can to ensure that Bingley gets the redevelopment it needs.

As a former Minister for Sport I am passionate about the benefits physical activity can bring to individuals and communities. That’s why I’m so excited about a new Bradford initiative I have helped set up that aims to put physical activity at the heart of what we do in the city.

The Active Bradford Partnership is a group of key organisations committed to raising the profile of physical activity, sport and leisure across the district. Partners include Bradford Council, the university and college, Bradford City, West Yorkshire Sports and others.

We are organising a series of seminars throughout the year. The first one was held at Bradford City on Friday 7 March, focusing on links between sport, physical activity and health. I’m delighted that I managed to secure the shadow health secretary, Andy Burnham MP, to deliver an excellent keynote address.

The seminar was a great success, with nearly 100 delegates attending. In May we have a seminar on how physical activity and sport can contribute to tourism in the district, in my view

a key part of Bradford’s future economy. Other seminars later in the year will focus on regeneration and the economy, and education.

Research shows that Bradford has some of the starkest health inequalities in the country, with a higher proportion of people wholly inactive than most equivalent cities in the UK. The Building Schools for the Future programme left us with some of the best sports facilities in the country, but despite this, in recent years the number of people doing physical activity in Bradford has flatlined.

The Active Bradford Partnership aims to tackle this problem head-on. It’s a great example of what we can achieve with true partnership.

Increasing participation in physical activity and sport could bring huge benefits to the district – not only for health, but also economic activity, inward investment, wellbeing, community cohesion... the list goes on.

I’m passionate about Bradford and firmly believe that when we all work together, anything is possible.

I wanted to update you about a campaign close to my heart – getting young people voting.

Evidence suggests that young people perceive politics as dull, boring and irrelevant to them.

In my Bradford constituency, for example, there are 24,000 young people. Half of these are not registered to vote. According to the Hansard Society, only 12% of young people are certain to vote at the next general election.

If a person doesn’t vote, then they have no political voice and do not and cannot shape government decisions on how taxpayers’ money is spent. Do you know why it’s easier for the council to shut youth centres rather than elderly people’s centres? It’s because older people vote and younger people don’t.

And why would a politician waste time and resources on a group of people that can’t or won’t vote for them?

Unless more work is done to encourage participation, then young people will continue to have no voice.

Not many young people know that they can register to vote when they’re 17. It’s against this backdrop that last summer the ‘Get on the Bus’ project was born. This involved us going

around my constituency on a bus, speaking to young people and getting them registered to vote. As part of this campaign, I worked with an organisation called Bite The Ballot to use the country’s first young person’s electoral registration form. Hundreds of young people across my constituency were registered.

In conjunction with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Voter Registration (which I sit on), Bite the Ballot also worked hard to promote National Voter Registration Day on 5 February.

Using events organised by young volunteers in schools, universities and shops up and down the country, as well as through social media campaigns and celebrity endorsements, we were able to register over 35,000 young people across the UK. This is a massive achievement but with the General Election only a year away, we need to keep working hard to get more young people registered and voting.

My party and I support reducing the voting age to 17 and this will form part of our manifesto next year, but this will be a pointless exercise if young people don’t register to vote.

Young people have a voice. It’s time to use it.

SALT’S RUIN: THE CURSE OF MILNER FIELD Like the skeletal shell of the once mighty Titanic lying desolate on the ocean bed, the sparse ruins of Titus Salt Jr’s Milner Field mansion at Shipley Glen are steeped in history, legend - and a grim mythology.

In November 1887, Titus Salt Jr - son and heir of his namesake, the Saltaire founder and self-made millionaire Sir Titus Salt was relaxing in the billiard room of his luxurious mansion when he suddenly collapsed in pain. He was pronounced dead of heart failure shortly afterwards, aged only 44. This was just one in a series of bizarre tragedies to befall residents of Milner Field, the sprawling estate Salt Jr had commissioned 18 years earlier.

On top of these tragedies, the family were shamed by a national scandal when their married daughter's lover was murdered by her spouse in a notorious and widely-reported crime of passion. In 1903 Alice Roberts had eloped with a doctor, Norman Cecil Rutherford, greatly against her fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes: he had wanted her to wed another suitor, a Polish count. In 1919 Alice informed Norman - the father of her six children - that she wanted a divorce in order to marry her lover, his friend and colleague Major Miles Seton.

aged 36, and Roberts' last surviving son, Harry, was badly injured in the First World War, preventing him from taking over the family business at Salts Mill as his father had hoped. The nurse Harry Roberts fell in love with while being treated for his injuries also died, pregnant with his child, in the flu epidemic that followed the war (Harry eventually married her sister, another nurse).

Recently returned from tending wounded soldiers in the trenches and suffering from shell-shock, Dr Rutherford didn't take the news well. He hunted down his love rival Seton and put a bullet or three in his chest, spending ten years in Broadmoor for the crime.

Subsequent occupants of the estate also suffered tragic and in some cases bizarre deaths. Ernest Gates lost his wife to a pre-existing illness just weeks after taking up residence at Milner Field in 1923, following her himself two years later after injuring his foot in a domestic accident and developing septicaemia. The exact cause of Ernest's injury is unknown, with rumours ranging from an unlucky scratch by a rose bush to an accidental whack with a golf club.

By the time of the Second World War the house had understandably acquired a macabre reputation, and that coupled with the cost of upkeep made it impossible to find a buyer for the once grand mansion.

Having fallen into disrepair after two attempts to auction it off, Milner Field was used as a source of building materials for repairs on Salts Mill. Derelict, gutted, roofless and with barely a trace of its former glory, the house was finally demolished in the 1950s - although an initial failed attempt to flatten the place with dynamite is testament to the quality of the original building work.

Suffering from irritation of the gall bladder and diaphragm, Hollins literally hiccuped himself to death.

One wonders what Salt, an Ozymandias for his era, would make of the ruins of his sumptuous palatial home. All that now remains to testify to the vast estate's existence are a few piles of brick, some fragments of the conservatory's mosaic floor hidden in the undergrowth at Shipley Glen, and the ghosts that are said to wander the site.

Unsurprisingly given its gruesome history, there are stories of a number of spectral former inhabitants, with identities ranging from Salt Jr himself to Eva Gates and Anne Hollins, the wives of the final two owners. The most intriguing resident ghost must be an Edwardian figure known as "The Green Man of Milner Field", who, it’s claimed, first appeared to a local schoolboy in the 1950s. Dressed all in green, he roams the ruins playing on a flute.

NEW PRESIDENT FOR BRADFORD CAMERA CLUB The club elected a new president, Judy Caunt, at the recent AGM. Judy has been a member of the club for over 20 years and in the past she tolerated her husband Tony when he wanted to spend ages taking “that special photo”. Now she has a Samsung digital compact camera and is as keen as any of the other members, taking some award-winning photographs. It was a matter of “if you can’t beat them, join in - and then beat them!”

Judy doesn’t claim to be technically-minded, but over the years she has learnt a great deal about composition and lighting and now produces some excellent images. “That’s what camera clubs are all about,” she says: “Being with other keen, like-minded amateurs and learning the ins and outs of camera techniques.”

THAT OTHER BRADFORD TEAM! Eric Firth remembers supporting the Bradford Park Avenue football team in the 1930s and 40s.

It's hard to believe now - and younger fans may be surprised to learn - that just a few decades ago Bradford had two professional football teams, Bradford City and that other one. That other one was Bradford Park Avenue.

In footballing terms, Bradford was split. Most Avenue fans lived in East and West Bowling, Great and Little Horton, Odsal, Shelf, Wibsey and the like. City's main base was on the other side of town, its fans mostly from Manningham, Heaton, Shipley, Saltaire, Bingley, and a fair few from Keighley.

The fans nicknamed him Shack, while the press dubbed him “the clown prince of football". Here's just one reason why, and I saw it happen. Shack gets the ball, beats four defenders: the ref blows up, I think for offside.

Well recorded from the 14th century onwards, the name Murgatroyd – with historic spelling variations of Murgetroyde, Mergretroyde, Morgateroyde, Mergatroid and Murgytroyd – is a common Yorkshire surname. Historically the name has almost always been recorded in Yorkshire, although Murgatroyds have also been recorded as far afield as London and New York. The first recorded Murgatroyd is in fact a Johannes Mergretroyde, who lived in Yorkshire during the reign of Richard II and is recorded in the Yorkshire county poll tax rolls of 1379.

Moor Gate Royd, or “the district leading to the moor”. Other sources suggest the name means “Margaret's Farm”, “Margaret's Clearing” or “Margaret's Road”, and that it may refer to an extinct medieval hamlet near Halifax. In Old Norse, the word “royd” means a clearing.

The name also features in the catchphrase of the Hanna Barbera character Snagglepuss, who would often exclaim “Heavens to Murgatroyd!” The phrase was also used by the Cowardly Lion, the basis for Snagglepuss, in the MGM film version of The Wizard of Oz.

In Wilsden eyes Butterfield is a great name with which to start the new series ‘What’s in a Name?’ [Bingley Rural, November/December 2013 – see page 62 for the continuation of the 'What's in a Name?' series with Murgatroyd]. It is a name with a long and distinguished history in the village. I hope I am not treading on our name researcher’s toes if I take a look at one myself, this time the very name of Wilsden. It is not likely to be requested for the series as there are no entries for this surname in the Bradford telephone directory. Indeed, our village is the only one of this name in atlases of Great Britain. It would be fascinating if some Mr or Miss Wilsden turned up, complete with several centuries of family tree.

REMEMBERING THE CITY FLOOD RISK Phil Robinson looks back to the time one of the city’s reservoirs had to be drained as it was at risk of flooding the city.

Horton Bank Country Park is a good hour’s walk around a pleasant, safe planted area with great views over Clayton and Bradford.

But not many people know anything about its history, or are even interested in it.

In the 1980s, the people of Clayton Village had good reason to be interested in it as 150 million gallons of water loomed over them.

And if the dam walls were to breach, they would likely be killed and the city would flood. Something which was apparently not considered when it was built.

In the 1800s, Horton Bank Quarry was one of the most famous stone quarries in Bradford with many of the neighbouring houses being built from its stone. In 1871, plans were drawn up to turn this quarry into a reservoir and these were accepted, with building work continuing later that year. It was finished just three years later.

The reservoir was closed in September 1989 when it became infected with bacterial algae. In November, Bradford West MP Max Madden brought the issue up in parliament to Michael Howard, the then Minister for Water & Planning, but Howard announced that he couldn’t do anything and it was up to Yorkshire Water.
