Nov 11 is coming soon: Today I saw a man, selling poppies, stop a lady and asked if he could re position her poppy. While doing so, he told that lady she should wear the poppy on their left side; the red represents the blood of all those who gave their lives, the black represents the mourning of those who didn't have their loved ones return home, and the green leaf represents the grass and crops growing and future prosperity after the war destroyed so much. The leaf should be positioned at 11 o'clock to represent the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the time that World War One formally ended. He was worried that younger generations wouldn't understand this and his generation wouldn't be around for much longer to teach them. (copy and paste to share just like I did) we must remember those from our current wars too!"

Lest we forget…

This month at the Heritage Gallery: GR8-BY-8 Exhibition

The current exhibition at the Heritage Gallery on Highway 16 next to the Visitor Information Centre features 55 works by local artists, with all canvasses measuring 8 inches by 8 inches. The exhibition will conclude on November 20th with an awards ceremony, with cash prizes to be awarded to the artists and a silent auction with proceeds going to the Lakes District Museum. Follow the Lakes District Museum Society on Facebook or on the Museum Society’s website, and vote for your favourite 8”x8” artwork on-line. And … plan on visiting this unique display of local works of art by adults and kids.

The 24/25 Met Opera broadcasts begin in early November at The Beacon Theatre The 24/25 season of Met Opera: Live in HD broadcasts, co -presented by the Lakes District Arts Council and The Beacon Theatre, begins on Sunday, November 10th at 1:00 pm with a new opera Grounded starring Canadian mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo, one of opera’s most compelling young stars. D’Angelo portrays Jess, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes

her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas, operating a drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle, she fights to maintain her sanity as she is called to rain down death by remote control. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the Met premiere of composer Jeanine Tesori’s score. The cast features tenor Ben Bliss as the Wyoming rancher who becomes Jess’s husband. Michael Mayer’s high-tech staging, using a vast array of LED screens, presents a variety of perspectives on the action including the drone’s predatory view from high above. Content Advisory: Grounded contains adult language and war sequences.

Tickets for the Met operas this season will be $15.00 each, and are available starting at 12:30 pm at The Beacon Theatre box office the day of the performance. Watch for LDAC ads closer to the broadcast date, in the Lakes District News and The Local Connector NW.
