Burns Lake Solar here again. Back to some numbers on grid-tied and hybrid grid-tied systems. Here is an example of the solar expense side, you will have to figure out if it is worth it for you.

A 7500 watt (7.5 kW) solar grid tied system costs about $14,000, plus installation and permit costs. It will put out about 5,625 watts per hour in direct sun.

If you have, for example, 6 hours of good sun in a day, you have made 33.6 kWh. If you want a grid-tied hybrid system things get a lot more complicated and costs get considerably steeper.

As most grid-tied homes aren’t set up to be run off solar (they have things like electric stoves and electric hot water tanks), you will need to most likely set up what is called an essential loads panel. This means you are splitting your loads into two. You will have two breaker boxes. They will both be active when you are on-grid, but if the power goes out, you will switch to the essential loads panel, which will be run off your batteries.

The Local Connector NW May 8, 2024 3

The equipment that does this fancy switching is pricey, plus a battery bank. So rough and dirty for a hybrid grid-tie, prices would start at about $30,000.

Again, prices can vary widely, contact us for a free consultation if you are interested. A couple of other things to consider.

Hydro is relatively cheap in BC and there are few good financial incentives to go with alternative energy. If you do the math, going grid-tied solar will offset your bill some, but it will take years to cover the cost of your system. This is why not very many people have solar when they are already on grid. The reality.

Another thing to consider is where you will place your solar array. Most people who are grid-tie put it on the roof. Do you have a south-facing roof with not many vents etc taking up space? Remember that if panels are on your roof they will snow-covered in winter and not making power, unless you are up there (CAREFULLY!) sweeping them off. If you have the room on your property south facing you can put them on an independent racking system and tip them vertical in the winter so the snow won’t stay on them, but that is more cost.

That’s it for this one, see you next time to talk about equipment.

15 Garden Plants That Repel Pests Naturally

Whether you want to keep mosquitos out of your yard or harmful pests out of your vegetable garden, there are natural ways to repel bugs that don't involve citronella candles or pesticides. For an environmentally friendly DIY pest solution, try growing one or more insect-repelling plants. Many herbs, vegetables, and flowers have strong aromas that make them wonderful companion plants for natural pest control.

1. Basil: This easy-to-grow culinary herb doubles as a repellent for houseflies and mosquitoes. Plant basil in pots and place them around patios to form a protective barrier.

2. Bay leaf: Bay is slow-growing repellent plant and common ingredient in soups and stews. Bay leaves also repel flies, cockroaches, and ants. As an alternative to growing your own bay leaf plant, you can also purchase bay leaves at the grocery store and sprinkle pieces of the leaves around pest-heavy areas of your garden.

3. Chives: When planted in your garden, this allium plant deters Japanese beetles, carrot flies, aphids, mites, and even rabbits.

4. Chrysanthemums: Since they naturally contain a compound called pyrethrum that's common in many artificial insect repellents, chrysanthemums are an effective way to deter pesky insects like spider mites, silverfish, Japanese beetles, ants, bed bugs, roaches, and fleas.

5. Dill: Planting dill is a way to repel bugs like spider mites, squash bugs, and aphids from your vegetable garden. A word of warning: Dill is known to attract tomato hornworms, so keep dill away from your tomato plants.

6. Garlic: This pungent allium plant is a bug repellent for carrot flies, cabbage worms, slugs, and aphids.

7. Geraniums: An iconic flower popular for flower beds and hanging baskets, geraniums deter many types of insects, including mosquitoes and leafhoppers.

8. Lemongrass: This attractive, tall-growing

The Local Connector NW 7

ornamental grass is a common ingredient in herbal teas. It contains a fragrant citronella oil that acts as a mosquito repellent.

9. Lemon thyme: Often grown for culinary purposes, lemon thyme helps keep mosquitoes at bay. Its tiny flowers also attract bees which help the pollination of surrounding plants.

10. Marigolds: The aroma of marigolds repels mosquitoes, aphids, and rabbits.

11. Mint: The essential oils found in mint plants as well as other members of the mint family, like sage, peppermint, hyssop, lemon balm, oregano, and catnip are all worthy mosquito repellents. Studies have indicated that catnip essential oils are more effective at repelling mosquitos than the chemical DEET, which is used in most synthetic insect repellents. Learn how to grow mint in your home garden here.

12. Nasturtiums: Nasturtiums are known as a "trap crop" because instead of repelling pests, they attract them to their own leaves. This means bugs like cabbage moths and aphids will focus on the nasturtiums instead of crops like cabbages, tomatoes, and beans. This makes nasturtiums a popular flower to plant along the border of vegetable gardens.

13. Parsley: This bright green biennial plant is a popular culinary garnish, but it also serves as an effective repellent against asparagus beetles. Learn how to grow parsley in your garden here.

14. Petunias: Available in a variety of vibrant colors to spruce up any flower bed, petunias help control aphids, tomato hornworms, and asparagus beetles. Rather than repelling these pests, petunias actually trap them in their sticky stamens, where the insects die instead of harming your plants.

15. Thyme: Thyme is sometimes used for medicinal purposes, and its essential oils are a wonderful natural way to deter insects like cabbage loopers, whiteflies, tomato hornworms, and corn earworms.

• 1 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

 Start off by combining all of your dry ingredients in a bowl. Add 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, and 1/4 tsp salt, then whisk it together.

 Reserve about 1 tbsp of the flour mixture and mix it with 1 1/2 cups of blueberries. Then set it aside.

 Now add 3 eggs into a large bowl and whisk them on high speed with an electric hand mixer. You want to whisk them for a few minutes until the eggs become pale and fluffy.

 Then continue beating the eggs as you add in 1 cup of granulated sugar. Keep beating for about 3 more minutes. The key to super fluffy muffins is well-beaten eggs.

 Now add 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1 tbsp lemon juice.

 Beat the eggs on high speed again and this time slowly add in 3/4 cup heavy cream.

 Now you can begin sifting in your dry ingredients. But don’t add it in all at once. You’ll want to add about 1/3 of the dry ingredients at a time with mixing in between.

 Once you’ve got all your dry ingredients well Incorporated continue mixing as you add in 4 tbsp of unsalted melted butter.

 Now add the blueberries to the blueberry muffin batter.

 Fold the blueberries into the batter using a spatula. Now Line your muffin tin with cupcake liners and begin scooping the batter out using a large cookie scoop.

 Make the streusel topping by combing 1 tbsp unsalted cold cubed butter, 2 tbsp all-purpose flour, Pinch of salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 3 tbsp brown sugar in a small bowl.

 Mash it all together using a fork until all the ingredients are well combined and have a crumbly dry texture to them.

 Now top the blueberry muffins with the streusel topping and bake them in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 35 minutes.

Samsung tests their smartphones' strength using a bum-shaped robot

We all know that smartphones need to be durable to withstand the wear and tear of everyday life, as well as any accidents. But have you ever wondered how companies test that they’re up to the job?

Samsung performs a range of tests and one of them includes having a bum-shaped robot (wearing jeans!) sit on smartphones to see whether they can survive the pressure!

Agroup of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope

There are 17,500 species of butterfly spread across the world (in every continent except Antarctica).

You may be used to seeing these beautiful creatures either alone or in pairs, but every so often they do come together – usually around rotten fruit, mud, dung, or dead animals – to hydrate and replenish nutrients like sodium that they don’t get from their pollen diet.

When butterflies gather in this way, the group they form is called a kaleidoscope and it can offer a dazzling display of colours.

The centre of the milky way smells like rum

Have you ever wondered what the centre of the milky way smells and tastes like? Nope, we haven’t either! But, according to astronomers, the giant dust cloud would taste like raspberries due

to the presence of ethyl formate (the chemical which gives raspberries their flavour).

This chemical also has another fascinating characteristic – it smells like rum!

There’s a village in the Netherlands that’s designed specifically to help people with dementia

The village of Hogeweyk in Weesp, Netherlands, is home to residents who all have an advanced form of dementia. However, this village is completely unlike any other, as it’s actually a nursing home that’s designed to look like a village.

It has 27 houses that cater to four different types of lifestyle – nature-oriented, cosmopolitan, well-to-do, and traditional Dutch – and residents get to choose which suits them best.

Each house has six or seven residents and a carer who cooks, watches over them, goes with them to social events, and helps them run errands like shopping at the village market.

The village was designed to give residents a greater quality of life and has become a great inspiration for others who’re looking to humanise dementia care.

One couple spent 20 years planting 2.7 million trees to restore their Brazilian rainforest home

Sebastião and Lélia Salgado have proved that each and

every one of us has the potential to make a difference in this world.

When Sebastião, a Brazilian photojournalist, returned home from reporting on the 1994 Rwandan genocide, he was shocked to discover that his family’s old cattle ranch (which was part of a 1,754-acre stretch of Brazilian rainforest) had been completely destroyed by deforestation. Only about 0.5% of the land was covered in trees.

Sebastião and his wife (with help from others) spent the next 20 years breathing new life into the forest by planting 2.7 million trees. Today, the area is a lush rainforest and many different species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians have returned.

Naps can be good for you

If you’re partial to an afternoon nap, you might be pleased to hear that naps can actually be good for us!Ashort, midafternoon nap (lasting 10-20 minutes) is thought to improve learning, boost memory, regulate emotions, and reduce sleepiness.

One study also found that people who napped once or twice a week had a lower risk of cardiovascular events.

However, whether a nap is more helpful than harmful can depend on things like age, the reason for your nap, and the length of your nap. To get tips on having the best nap, it’s worth reading this helpful guide from the Sleep Foundation.
