The Birdcage night club closes suddenly after 13 years.

The venue was renowned for its cabaret nights, which featured flamboyant drag acts, showgirls and male dancers. Despite undergoing a £400k refurbishment just two years ago, without warning the club confirmed on the 9 May that it had taken its final bow. No explanation has been given as to why the hen-party hangout has closed its doors but refunds are being offered to all those who have pre-purchased tickets to events.
Peter Hook & The Light to perform Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’ albums in their entirety.
The milestone performance - which celebrates the 40th anniversary of both albums will take place at Manchester’s O2 Apollo on the 16 May 2020. It may be a year away, but with a captive hometown audience of faithful Factory fans, it is sure to sell out quick. A ‘warm-up’ show will take place at the O2 Academy Brixton in London on the 15 May. Tickets for both dates are on sale now from £32.50 and money raised will be donated to CALM and The Epilepsy Society in memory of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis.
Tom Kerridge’s Pub In The Park festival to return this June.
After its successful launch in 2018, Pub In The Park festival is set to return to Knutsford, Cheshire from 7-9 June. The festival boast gastro pub popups served with a side order of musical acts including Texas, Will Young, Stereo MCs, Soul ll Soul and The Bluetones. Tickets for this year’s event are now on sale from £32.10. 9

Stockport five-piece Fuzzy Sun will take you on a journey through melodic, psychedelic pop, dipped in disco flare. Despite only officially being together for a year, they’ve already scooped the prestigious award for CityLife’s ‘Best Breakthrough Act’. Mentored by their Stockport counterparts, Blossoms, they will be supporting the band in their hometown at Edgley Park in June. Before that, however, they’re embarking on a ten-date tour of their own. Be sure to check out this funky fivesome before they get even bigger.

Alfa Mist is quickly becoming the shining light on London’s jazz scene and is bringing his harmonious compositions to Manchester. Not one to blow his own trumpet – despite his multihyphenated skill set – he describes himself simply as a producer and composer. His luxurious jazz takes on a melancholic approach but with an upbeat soul injection including alt-hip-hop stylings. Fresh off the release of his new album, ‘Structuralism’, he’ll be performing his beats at Gorilla. 10

These Japanese punk sisters are on tour in the UK with their ferocious album ‘NEKOKABURI’. The trio originally formed in 2008 and quickly built up a loyal fan base in Japan from playing extensive shows, making their first overseas performance at the Japan Expo in 2016. Their sound is heavily influenced by the British punk scene as they grew up listening to the likes of The Sex Pistols and The Clash. Make sure you don’t miss these exquisite punks at one of Manchester’s hottest venues, Jimmy’s.
Multi-platinum pop powerhouse, Zara Larsson first caught the attention of the music industry in 2008, when she won Talang (the Swedish version of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’) at only 10 years old. Following this success, she signed a deal with Ten Music Group and issued her first single in 2013. Since then she has collaborated with the likes of Tinie Tempah, David Guetta and Clean Bandit and some of her songs have reached almost a billion plays on Spotify. Go see this soulful electro-pop songstress in her throws of world domination.

Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds

Infamous Manchester native Noel Gallagher needs little introduction. Fresh off the release of his new single ‘Black Star Dancing’ the former Oasis vocalist and lead guitarist, is bringing his high flying birds to Heaton Park. Expect even more new material as he’s revealed that he will be releasing two new EP’s for the first time since 2017 which, according to Gallagher, will be “very Mancunian-sounding”. The homecoming gig will see him joined by Doves and White Denim, with more acts to be revealed. You’ll be in for a right treat at this show, our kid.
One of the most important groups of the 1960s, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, is bringing the embodiment of Motown to YES. During their time at the top, the ultimate divas scored dozens of hit singles, including ‘Nowhere To Run’, ‘Dancing In The Street’, and ‘Jimmy Mack’. Since the ‘60s the band members have staunchly remained in the music industry and Martha is regularly seen in stage shows in the West End and on Broadway. Whether you lived through that decade or are newer fans, these seasoned songstresses will certainly put on a performance to remember. 12
their combination of cosmological rhythm, empowerment and feminism. ‘Oshun’ is a spirit, a deity, or a goddess that reflects one of the manifestations of God in the Ifá and Yoruba religions. Essentially, an African “goddess of love and sweet waters” – and these two certainly personify that. Singer-songwriter Matt Thomson had been reading a book on this phenomenon and thought it’d be a pretty cool band name, but his interview with The Live Guide reveals that his rock group have far more in common with this mythical clan than just a moniker.
That’s not to say The Amazons are ashamed of their roots, though. Far from it. According to Matt, the group might not have even existed without their hometown’s flagship festival. “Reading Festival is definitely one of the main reasons why we’re a band today,” Matt says defiantly.

Stone Age or Kings Of Leon and your world’s turned upside down. You’re thinking: ‘Fuck me; I want to do this! I want to be on stage. What’s backstage? I want access to those closed doors. I want to see what’s on the other side.’ Some people don’t care about that stuff. But we certainly did. That’s why Reading is the biggest thing on our calendar and we can’t wait to play there later this year.” Ever since gawping at the big guns rocking away in their backyard, The Amazons have been on a wild global journey to earn themselves a spot on the megafestival bill alongside their heroes.
of high-powered indie rock (with more than a few dashes of metal) has proven a fitting soundtrack for an action-packed five years – and the group embarked on a whole different kind of venture in 2018 to find inspiration for their sophomore album ‘Future Dust’; heading out to Three Cliffs Bay in Wales.
“We decided to go on a writing trip somewhere unique,” Matt tells us. “On the front cover of the new album you can see us all standing in a cave outline at Three Cliffs. That’s where we wrote ‘Future Dust’. The image works as a snapshot Matt Thomson of that time.”

“We’ve got some much stronger themes on this record. Sonically, it’s quite different to our first album, too. We’ve been developing a lot as we’ve toured and worked hard to master our individual crafts.”
They’ve supported Jimmy Eat World at the Dublin Olympia, set their tour van on fire in broad daylight (a spectacular image used as the cover art for their eponymous debut LP), amassed millions of plays on Spotify, and been touted as a ‘band to watch’ by BBC Radio and NME. Today alone they’ve squeezed in two interviews and a photoshoot for Kerrang! The Amazons’ euphonious brand

Interestingly, though, with every new adventure the band enjoys, they find themselves looking back at their roots more than ever. “I’ve always been interested in the origins of things, but even more so recently,” Matt tells us.

“We can’t wait to play this one,” Matt exclaims. “This area means a lot to us. We’ve done pretty much the whole circuit of Manchester. We started out at Dot To Dot Festival playing at Soup Kitchen to about ten people, then the crowds just started getting bigger with every venue we played.”
“I think the further we go down the path creatively, the more the music of our formative years, kind of creeps up on us. Bands I loved when I first got into rock and roll – Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones – I’ve found myself revisiting and wanting to know what they were Matt Thomson influenced by. Why were they so great?”

“There was one gig at the Albert Hall that felt like the homecoming for me. We walked off stage being like: ‘Wow… that was the best gig we’ve ever done.’
“It’s been interesting delving into the people at the beating heart of rock and roll like blues artists. I mean, we’re not making a blues record… but you’ve got to know where you come from, don’t you? I’ve loved digging into that and learning about why we do what we do.”

As well as tonnes of performances from established artists and the-next-big-things, the festival is also there to give anyone with an interest in the scene a platform to collaborate, gain insight and develop their skills.

Oh, there’s still plenty of room for some of the best acts from across the globe too. And, just for good measure, there’s a pop-up cinema, an expanded family area, comedy acts and a delicious food and drink line-up.

For over two weeks in July, Manchester International Festival will be celebrating music, art and theatre from across the globe by bringing original, new work and special events to our doorstep. As well as some incredible international artists performing, MIF are keen to get communities around Manchester involved with public projects and workshops. You’ll find events at all the big venues like Manchester Cathedral, HOME and Manchester Art Gallery. Plus, some of the action will be spreading out to quirky spaces like railway depots and even car parks.

What a way to kick off festival season. On the second May Bank Holiday you’ll find us partying in a park in Warrington, and that’s exactly where you should be too. Starting off back in 2009 as a one-day event, it’s grown into five fun-packed days that sees thousands flock to the delightful Lancashire seaside for a dose of music, comedy, literature and art. It’s their 10th anniversary this year and their celebrating in style. Take your pick from Stereophonics, The Human League, Rod Stewart, Kylie Minogue and the Hollywood Proms with Michael Ball and Sheridan Smith.
