Yep, I’m one of those hopeless romantics that believes in love and “loves” all the beautiful partner pics on social media. Keep posting them and tag me so I can love them too.
I also love this big, beautiful city that is by the ocean, has easy roads to navigate and offers a lifestyle quite ‘out of the ordinary’.
Theoretically, February is the month for love, being Valentine’s month and the start of the new lunar year of the Water Rabbit (see Jan’s column on Page 25) and all. But what does it mean? Having a Middle Eastern background, there are many words to describe the people and things you love. In English we use the one word for lots of different things and types of love.
I was once taken to task for saying “I love pineapples” and also saying “I love you”. Mmmmhhhh… the context is completely different. I really, really like eating a good North Queensland pineapple, but when I tell someone, ‘I love them’, it comes from a place of deep connection.
I’m not sure what the answer is, being a passionate person, I guess I overuse the word love. In my mind it doesn’t dilute it, but I guess outwardly it can be construed that way. It seems love is complicated, or perhaps complex, or maybe I have it really wrong and it is just simple. Well, this is the month of the Valentine, but I do believe love is an everyday thing.
Whether you love expensive nights out, or chilling by the ocean, this wonderful city of ours can always turn it on, but maybe book early.
Here are my five tips for a healthy relationship:
1. Communicate
2. Communicate (yep, I know that one is on repeat)
3. Have fun and laugh a lot
4. Be intimate (whatever that means to you both)
5. Be kind, always, and especially when you’re menopausal or cranky
And a sneaky 6th – Whatever your own tips are, always remember them in the challenging times.
If you want to check out some cool “love” poetry, follow our socials. We are posting some local poems written about love throughout February.
As always, I have to say a big thank you to our fantastic, growing team. Without them there would be a lot of blank pages. Have a great February and get out to enjoy this beautiful city!

BONUS INTRA MELIOR EXI ENTER GOOD, EXIT BETTER
Iremember when I first saw the new signs going up where previously one of my favourite takeaway shops had been. Balabite, the funky middle eastern take out on Eyre Street near the post office in North ward, was bitten by the curse of COVID and sadly closed its doors. My daughter had been working there and as a family we really enjoyed the food. Something new was about to flower.
Fast forward six months and we were all wondering what the sign “Artside Studio. Be Genuine” meant. Was it an art studio, tattoos, make up?
Well Townsville is a city of love (believe me, it’s true) and when I met Pouya Ansari and Lyn Lyn Griffiths from Artside, I was proven 100% correct. This beautiful couple shine and their business, a hair salon which reflects the genuine and loving approach to life both have, sets a new standard in the craft of hairdressing and customer service.
The opportunity to share some of their story in our love edition was simply irresistible. When you watch our video interview with them (scan the QR Code) you will see how adoringly they reassure each other and share their story which reflects the way they run their business together. What better place to have that chat than over wine and cocktails at the newly opened Buzuka on Flinders Street.
Life has not always been so straightforward for Pouya, who comes from a long line of hairdressers in Iran, who consider the trade a craft. A bit like a painter with a palette, ensuring each picture reflects the creative vision intended. He relocated to Australia nearly four years ago, to create a better life for himself, away from a restrictive regime, where freedom was simply a dream. For someone who has witnessed and recently had to hear tragic family stories from back in Iran, he chooses with Lyn Lyn by his side, to stay motivated by what is possible with a heart full of love and a positive mindset.
The two coyly told me how they met when working near each other. Pouya lovestruck and a bit blindsided by appropriate culture on how to approach Lyn Lyn. I was impressed by one of the first questions asked, ‘Are you single?’
Lyn Lyn, hails from Townsville, having spent most of her life on the island (Maggie) with her mum and grandparents, with her mum still running some Airbnb’s and the restaurant at the RSL on the island. With Filipino heritage she is a strong, stunning woman. She made the decision to agree to see Pouya, and the rest is history.
Together they plan their life, business and adventures and are rarely apart.
Both are motivated with what Townsville has to offer and are regulars on the dining out scene.
At the end of our interview Pouya shared his thoughts on love, which is a fitting end to this story.
“Everyone has their own opinion about love. I want to go a little bit deeper into the quantum layer of Valentine’s Day. For me Valentine’s Day is not only going on a hot date, eating chocolates or lollipops. These things are actually very cool and lovely, please don’t get me wrong.
But to me the real concept is to remind us what is love? What is sacrifice? And who, we as humans base our perspectives and beliefs and why we are here in this world, as the leaders of our own existence. It doesn’t matter who we are or where we are from, we can trust everything we make and do as a foundation of our life. We can be proud of that and to achieve the new things in our life.
Love is the most simple and obvious global rule but it brings the heaviest responsibility for people who use it.”

Lips – they’re soft, movable and help us to eat and communicate. But did you know that lips are our most visible sex organ? So why are there some women out there that want them … full?
When we use our lips a certain way, they have the capability for gesture that our other body parts just don’t have. Pouting, for example, is a gesture of intimacy and can communicate to others “hey – I’m interested”, whereas pursed lips can reveal frustration and anger, effectively holding the mouth shut to prevent saying what you want to say!
Lips are red because of the underlying blood vessels near the surface of the skin. Also, the transition of our normal skin to the red of the lips is a feature only found in humans. They are essential to articulate words and some letters rely entirely on lips to sound out, such as P, F, V and M. We use our lips to kiss, and kissing is thought to originate from our primitive ancestors as a way of sniffing out possible mates.
These days, kissing is anywhere from an act of friendship all the way up to a sexual gesture. In 2007, a study by Gallup of American college students found that kissing was a precursor for possible sex! College women said they were less likely to have sex with a man unless they kissed him first.
So why would some women want full lips? Well, full lips signal sensuality. Lips get thinner as we age, whereas full lips are a sign of youthfulness and virility.
Back to our primitive ancestors, a female’s full lips were a signal to potential mates that indicated “I’m full of oestrogen, I’m fertile, come mate with me!” – a sure thing to promise the continuation of our species. These days, women want to look attractive and desirable. They don’t want to just look like they’re capable of having sex, but that they’re excited about doing it too. Full lips help express that.
Full lips go hand-in-hand with women’s newfound sexual freedom. We live in the age of Hinge and Bumble, and decisions about our appearance are made in a split second. Being able to display full lips is a quick signifier of sexiness and gives a woman a competitive edge in an otherwise crowded reproductive marketplace!
What do you want your lips to say about you? At Refresh NQ we love to create naturallooking full lips and would love to help you reach your lip goals! Book an obligation free consult online at refreshnq.gettimely.com.
When it was first suggested we catch up with the team from Craftrun, I honestly thought it might be a knitting group. I was wrong. That is kind of lucky because no matter how hard I tried the knit one, pearl one, it never quite worked out for me.
The Craftrun is a group of four blokes who decided that they needed to connect more regularly on a social level and do some things they loved doing. Running and craft brew were what they came up with. With three Townsvillians still in the group from when they started Matthew Mee, Billy Bragg, Rowan Greedy, with Tyrone Small doing a stint overseas at the moment, this group of 30-somethings are like an accidental band (check out their names Mee, Bragg, Greedy & Small) with a following of fans, keen to have a good time.
The runners (and walkers) have grown from four to over 120 meeting each week on a Thursday. No times are recorded it’s up to you to enjoy the exercise, then they catch up for a brew and feed afterwards. Starting with no rules or planning, except over a beer, the group has become its own village welcoming everyone who wants to join.
Legend has it, the group has grown thanks to a night out with their partners, who set up an Instagram page after a few drinks, rather successfully it seems. They had instant followers, but like anything, it took six more months for the group to really take off. They also take a more organised approach these days and post which venue they will be starting their craft run from every Monday. It’s simple to join you simply need to sign up to their Facebook group. Check out the photos there are people from all walks of life, so join in for a walk or run and meet lots of other locals doing the same.
The next step up for the group is organising a Townsville team for the International Women’s Day Fun Run. The International Women’s Day Fun Run Presented by National Storage is a charity event, coordinated by the Mater Foundation, to create a ‘Sea of Pink’ in celebration of “International Women’s Day” and to raise funds for breast cancer research.
The Townsville Craftrun team will support the Mater Foundation to join the ‘Sea of Pink’’ on Thursday, March 9th, meeting at Flinders Square and finishing at The Townsville Brewing Company (The Brewery) where Pink
Beer will be on tap and funds raised will go to support the Mater Foundation. This event will commence a little earlier than usual, at 5.15pm to help the boys coordinate additional numbers of runners.
Please register to join this event by going to fundraise.mater.org.au/fundraisers/Craftrun to help show Townsville support for this great events. The Little Birdie Team will be there with bells on to support this great collaboration.
Valentine’s Day will never be the same again for KX Pilates owners and new parents Brady and Lily Ellis after the birth of their first child in June last year.
The high school sweethearts from Adelaide originally met in year five before making their relationship official when they were in year 11.
Lily said out of the 16 Valentine Day’s the couple have celebrated together, she still remembers the very first one in 2007.
“We used to catch the train to school together and I remember jumping on board with a few friends and Brady bought me a rose and a teddy bear,” she said.
“And I got him a pizza delivered to school.”
This year the pair will celebrate Valentine’s Day in the company of their baby girl Sophie as a family for the first time.
Brady said they were looking forward to spending the occasion as a threesome.
“I think we are going to do the same thing that we do every other day of the year,” he said.
“We will go for a walk together as a family, we might go out to dinner and we might have a cute little coffee date in the middle of day and we might squeeze in a bit of work at KX. “But we will also be putting Sophie to bed nice and early and then we might open up a good bottle of wine,” he said.
Each Valentine’s Day has not always been a romantic occasion with Brady reflecting on a cringe-worthy celebration four years ago.
“I thought it would be nice to surprise Lily with a picnic but we were living in a townhouse in Hermit Park at the time and I set the place up with some little candles and she had recently taken a liking to calamari,” he said.
“I went to the fish and chip shop and got some chips and squid and then I came home and I thought it was the cutest idea ever but then she made it very obvious that she absolutely despises greasy fish and chips.
“So, Lily’s Valentine’s Day was sitting in our townhouse eating greasy fish and chips, and I loved it and she hated it. So you would think being together for 12 years at that point, I would have figured it out,” he said.
Lily said operating KX Pilates with her husband had brought the family closer together over the last 18 months.
“We are so lucky to be with each other every day and I feel like we treat every day like Valentine’s Day because if you love your partner, you shouldn’t need a day to remind you,” she said.
“But it is a nice little edition to the calendar every year just like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day and it’s nice to just have that day to appreciate each other and to remind you of the other person and that’s what makes Valentine’s Day so special.”
It will be a low-key Valentine’s Day for Feng Shui Master Jan Leese and her husband Jim who will celebrate their 42nd wedding anniversary this year.
February 14 is not so much about flashy dinners or extravagant gifts but rather spending quality time with each other.
The pair met in Zimbabwe when Jim was serving in the British Army, Jan was only 17 years old and they married in England the following year.
Jim said the couple were going to spend Valentine’s Day doing what they loved best.
“We will probably enjoy our usual thing which is sitting on our patio enjoying a glass of wine and cheese and biscuits and music playing,” he said.
“I think it’s fair to say we treat every day as Valentine’s Day.”
It has been 17 years since Jan and Jim moved to Townsville with their two sons.
Jan said they had beautiful memories of Valentine’s Day celebrations in the past.
“Over the years we have enjoyed many dinners sitting by the sea or sitting having a picnic together,” she said.
“We have never been into the commercial side of things but it is a really good reminder to have a day when you just stop and think about your relationship and be grateful for your partner.
“The Day is about celebrating your relationship in whatever way that means, so if someone has zero budget, they can still hold hands and look at the sea and enjoy the moment,” she said.
Jim said Valentine’s Day was a time to reflect on the bond you share with your partner.
“I don’t think it is about the location, I think it is about association and taking the time to know who you are and how your relationship is going,” he said.
“Everyone feels the pace and pressures of life so, if you don’t take the time out for this special occasion, you become overwhelmed with everything that is going on.
“So, it is important for people to step back and to evaluate who they are and where they are and how much they care for each other,” he said.
Over their four-decade long marriage, Jan said she had seen a shift in Valentine’s Day traditions.
“In our day, when we were in our 20s, it was the man giving the women the rose, but these days it’s both ways, which is lovely,” Jan said.
“It used to be very much the woman who waited for the man to proclaim his love but now it is just about love.”
As far as the pair are concerned, love comes in many shapes and sizes with Jan explaining Jim has surprised her in the past with touching Valentine’s Day gifts.
“My husband will give me a Valentine’s Day card but it will be from the cat because love comes in many forms and that is what we are celebrating,” she said.
“We will definitely keep on celebrating the day in the future.”
Ready for a romantic rendezvous? What better way to pop the question or celebrate an anniversary than a beautiful sunset sail around Magnetic Island.
Big Mama Sailing has been sharing moments with couples, friends and families for over ten years. Owned and operated by Lisa, Stu and their son Fletcher, with able bodied sea dog Coco in tow, they share their home, Big Mama and their second vessel, Ragamuffin 111 with the locals and visitors of Townsville and Magnetic Island.
Lisa and Stu have their own romantic story, meeting in Townsville thirty years ago. Both had a love of the ocean and sailing, a bond that is still strong today.
Lisa, is the bubbly host. Adept at ensuring all your needs on board are met, while Stu ensures a safe sail, capturing the best Magnetic Island, sunsets and the ocean can offer.
They have both sailed extensively in the waters of Australia, the Torres Straits, The Gulf, PNG & SE Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia & Thailand). Sailing is simply their life! Their two vessels Big Mama and Ragamuffin offer different experiences.
We enjoyed our sunset sail on Ragamuffin 111 (48ft) one of German Fres designed vessels and raced by Syd Fisher. Ragamuffin is a BYO vessel and we enjoyed one of the famous OTTO platters while on board, but there are lots of food options on the island to choose from to bring along with you.
Pick up from Maggie is usually from Picnic Bay, which requires a little bit of juggling, but you can also board from Breakwater Marina on the mainland which is easy.
The crew welcome families and children, there are some limitations but essentially you can choose how you want to enjoy the experience.
This wasn’t our first sail with Big Mama and I guarantee it won’t be the last. Sailing is the equivalent of changing from driving in a car to riding in a horse and cart. You simply have to slow down. It takes a little while but before you know it you are embracing the views, the water and the pace. Keep your phones at home, unless its to take some happy snaps and just simply enjoy the sail!
Thinking about a romantic date? What is more romantic than sipping a glass of champagne and enjoying a platter looking out over the Coral Sea.
Don’t know where to start? Here’s a guide to help you recreate our picnic by the sea.
We made it easy by asking Donna from Meadow Moon Picnics to coordinate the romantic setting for us. She started Meadow Moon after arranging a surprise picnic for her husband on their 19th wedding anniversary.
The start of Meadow Moon coincided with the beginning of Covid, so it was a little tricky to begin with, while Mother’s Day proved the perfect opportunity to help families create special memories for the woman in their life.
Donna has been very lucky to have set up special picnics for a number of special customers and has organised everything from a romantic picnic for two, marriage proposals, weddings and special family gatherings.
Never alone, a business like this requires coordination and collaboration to stay successful. Donna regularly collaborates with other local businesses.
We also asked a couple of locals to help set the scene and Ora and Justin were happy to help out. Stunning setting, stunning set-up and a gorgeous couple.

The question of how much do you invest in your relationship is better asked as, “How much do you invest in yourself because you know it directly impacts your relationship?”
In my days as a couple’s therapist one of the most common presentations was each person claiming the other was not investing in the relationship. However, it essentially came down to how much each person was investing in themselves. When you continue to invest in your own well-being at all levels, investing in a relationship will be a lot easier because you’re already half way there. Liken it to starting a business. The beginning is exciting and you have lots of hopes and fears, however failure will be inevitable if you don’t continue to have a similar level of investment into the future.
It’s a tricky subject however let’s focus on the one thing that brings most people together, attraction. Fast forward a few years and one or both people no longer take the same pride in their presentation, it can create relationship stress and become the start of moving apart if one or both people find this difficult to adjust to. You can of course argue that if someone really loves you it shouldn’t matter if they gain some extra kilo’s or stop dressing up. However, if it affects the quality and even success of the relationship, is it fair that presentation should be considered fair game as part of your investment into the relationship? This is something you need to work out as a couple early on in your
relationship. What is important for you as a couple and what do you agree on as areas for continued investment? The list will be different for every couple and that’s okay, but knowing what’s important to each of you, gives you an investment starting point. At the very least it means you’re talking about watering the relationship garden and that is in fact, the ultimate investment.
CLAUDIA AUBORT Founder – The Therapy Destination, Psychotherapist/Couples Therapist BA CHC / Dip Relationship TherapyWITH RUTH GUICE PRESENTATION & NETWORKING SKILLS COACH MOUTHIN’ OFF ACADEMY OF COMMUNICATION & KICK-ASSERY
I’m not a psychologist. I’ve consulted a few in my time, but I’m no Freud or Jung. What I am is completely fascinated by though, is human behaviour. In particular, how we humans behave when we gather in groups. One of the most common complaints I hear from those attending a networking event is that they found it ‘clicky’. Or should that be ‘clique-y’?
The Oxford dictionary defines a ‘clique’ as a small close-knit group of people who do not readily allow others to join them. (At a women’s networking event recently, I heard it called a ‘vagina club’… yikes.)
Excuse me while I just grab my clipboard, slip on my white lab coat, give you a patronising look over the top of my glasses and offer you Dr Ruth’s take on it.
Subject A – nervous and anxious, enters a networking event.
Subject A spots Subject B – another nervous and anxious person they’ve met before. They make a beeline for them and start to feel more comfortable.
Subject C enters and does the same, relieved to find safety and comfort in the familiar.
Person D enters, they don’t know Person A, B or C, but observe them laughing and chatting enthusiastically and dearly wish they were Person A, B or C.
Persons A, B & C don’t notice Person D –they are just so relieved they have found each other; they don’t remember what it’s like to be Person D.
Person D – “I wouldn’t go back, it was really cliquey.”
Now IF ONLY the event was facilitated, so that no one is left in a corner. Well, I might be able to help you there…cue the trumpets!
Introducing The Table NQ – Townsville’s facilitated networking opportunity that will give you the skills to make the most of any and every networking event you attend. I’ll stop myself before this turns into a rather shameless plug. I’ll just leave this QR code here.

LOVE is all around in 2023. Water Rabbit year has its own astrology with many layers of romantic energy, almost a bit too much! On top of the astrology our homes’ feng shui has romance clearly shown too. Romantic energy is related to charisma, art, literature, creativity, cooking, performance, networking, cultural pursuits, just to name a few. It’s good to know how to use energy for our own benefit (a bit like knowing what the weather is doing to plan a sailing trip). So, for EVERYONE we need to understand that this romantic, creative, artistic qi is there in abundance and it is up to us, not the energy, in how we use it.
If someone has a wondering eye the energy will support affairs. If someone wants to improve their cooking, artistic, networking skills then this energy is supportive too. We just need to use it for what we want else we may be caught up in the energy in a way we did not plan. This beautiful creative energy radiates out everywhere from the centre of our homes in 2023, especially to the north. Therefore if you are looking for a place to be artistic for example, be in the centre and look north or the other way around; cover yourself with this visiting beautiful qi. There are many other layers in the same place and depending on your home’s own qi map you
may find you need to add either some red or dark navy blue décor, such as a small rug, to the centre of the home to harmonise, just play with it and see how it feels.
The word of warning is that this seductive creative energy can increase the chance of 3rd party interferences, so if you are already in a relationship ensure you make your partner feel LOVED.
The water rabbit is a peacemaker, so after the exhausting energy of 2022, let’s all reach out with LOVE and make the world a better place. LOVE comes in many forms, and all is supported in 2023.
Start by LOVING and appreciating ourselves first, then radiate out LOVE to our next circle of those nearest and dearest to us. Let’s tell them we LOVE them, and then the next circle. Review:
Well Buzuka is a big Ba-boom! Not our first visit to this gem of a bar, doing it differently. The first time I ventured here I was expecting a bit of a party scene and cocktails, without much consideration for what ended up on the menu. I was happily surprised.
The concept of having a good time in a fun, happy and vibrant environment has been followed through with the owners employing start-up chef extraordinaire, Adam Merino, to design a menu to match the neon lights and atmosphere.
Adam’s career has some great lineage, starting out at Spirit House on the Sunshine Coast and spending a few years in Byron Bay at Rice and Bang Bang. Bringing his Asian experience to the menu at Buzuka, you will find a great mix of sweet, salty, sour and spice finished with texture on the plate. Adam describes his plates as full of big flavours, but I differ a little. I am entranced with the delicate flavour of the sauces he creates. There are undeniable flavour palates in each sauce to tantalise every taste bud in your mouth. He obviously is spending a lot of time in the kitchen preparation, ensuring the flavours are perfect.
The unquestionable thing is that there are some massive fresh flavours in the way plates are finished, fresh herbs, chillies, often multiple types of chillies, and always some texture on the plate.
In the future we can look forward to some additions to the menu, leaning towards spices of the East, inspired by the heritage of his Indian sous chef, Ramish. We can’t wait. At our first visit, Buzuka had managed to score an incredible team of French front of house staff. Sadly, as is the case in most regional cities in Australia, they continued to move on with their travels. To our surprise,
we were greeted by the absolutely lovely Chaniese. Witty, engaging and very new to Townsville, likely here to stay, she loves it here too.
Chaniese is the consummate professional, with a lot of Aussie cheek thrown in –perfect for the Buzuka vibe. It is great to see professional hospitality talent, putting roots down in this great city. The local food scene is definitely on the right trajectory. So, some favourites which we highly recommend from the menu include:
+ Kingfish sashimi with melon, coconut and green nahm jim – perfectly executed delicate dish
+ Crispy pork belly with a turmeric glaze and hot and sour salad – the glaze is sublime
+ Crying Tiger Wagyu Skewers, salted sour sauce and fresh coriander – once again the sauce is superb
+ The Buzuka Pink Bao with battered prawns and turmeric tartare – just to throw some romance with the very cute house-made pink buns
+ Prawn Larb with mint, Thai basil, cucumber and iceberg lettuce – this is a great dish and has some big flavours. Eating with your hands is a personal favourite of mine
+ Braised Beef Rib with salted caramel cucumber salad – popular with the whole crew
+ Coconut sago with mango sorbet and caramel popcorn – none of this dish makes sense to me. I’m not a huge dessert person, a little fussy. This dessert is an absolute stand out because it surprises you, a little like the whole experience.
So if you’re looking for dinner for two, or a crowd of people to have fun and share, this is the place to be . The food, service and cocktails make for a great night out, any day of the week.
Let us know if you’d like us to come and review your menu!
Review by: Josie Howardestate, he is quite clear suggesting ‘there is no repetition, no two properties, owners or sellers are the same.’
It’s not a bad wrap to know that your reviews on leading real estate platform realestate.com.au give you a five star review as a local real estate agent.
To be honest, I’m not sure I have ever met someone who can talk so much about local property and well, just about anything. Heading into his sixth year of selling real estate locally, with an anniversary on Valentine’s Day, Sean is one of Townsville’s leaders in property sales. His shift from being a lead Mercedes car salesman into property, seems to have worked for this local achiever.
Sean is quite genuine about real estate and chose to make the move from selling prestige cars for an improved lifestyle. He wanted to spend more time with his two children. When asked what he loves about selling real
He readily admits though, he had a slow start. It took nine months to, in his own words, ‘get the monkey off his back’, to sell his first property, which ended up falling over at the contract stage due to the building and pest inspection. He has come a long way since those early days.
Hi suggestion for areas of growth include some of the suburbs that have been revived since the flooding in 2019. Idalia being one such suburb. His perspective that the interest in the area may be due to so many homes being rebuilt there and the unlikelihood of another similar incident happening, has kept demand for the area high.
His picks for those of you wanting to flip a house – look at the 4810 and 4812 postcodes. Demand is high and renovated properties are on an uphill trajectory. He also mentioned Garbutt as a great place to buy a cheaper property with potential good returns after renovation.
For those that want a family lifestyle, he highly recommends Mount Louisa and Kirwan as unbeatable for value and family lifestyle. He also suggested the Northern Beaches as a great place, with the Ring Road in place, is a relatively short trip to the city and the facilities and infrastructure being built there, ensures a self-service approach for those choosing to spend their time locally. So, what’s his take on the best date night restaurant? Bridgewater hands down. He claims the best food ever! Well it is one of three hatted restaurants locally. Then for the family, he recently rediscovered Hogsbreath at Willows. Happy kids make a simple life. If you would like to contact Sean call 0439 900 484 or scan the code for more details.

Love is not always about adventure. Sometimes it is sneaking away and relaxing by a private pool, in one of the most beautiful places in Australia, Magnetic Island.
No, we haven’t time travelled back to 1984 to become Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner), the mousy romance novelist who received a treasure map in the mail from her murdered brother-in-law which leads her on an adventure with handsome, mercenary, Jack Colton (Michael Douglas), in the classic 1980’s romance movie. Our adventure was much more relaxing.
Perched on the marina at Nelly Bay is Dacha on Maggie. This beautiful and luxurious property, recently on the market for short term stays, has the ambience of an opulent hotel, with the privacy afforded few when requiring a romantic get-away or a family holiday. Let’s just say, there is plenty of romantic stone used throughout this beautiful build.
Owners Ryan and Ekaterina Pope purchased their first block of land on the island in 2019 where they built their first duplex. The build
for Dacha began in January 2022 and was completed in October 2022. All of their builds come from a place of love and beautiful design, a bit like when they first met at Ryan’s birthday, which was love at first sight, when both were on holiday.
Dacha is not your typical stay and to be honest, the property has successfully positioned itself as something that you just don’t normally see, anywhere in North Queensland. There is absolutely nothing ‘Queenslander’ about this property, apart from the breathtaking views. As you drive towards the entrance, you see curves. There is something soft and desirable about curves. The curves continue and are used throughout the design, in living areas and bedrooms, of which there are five to choose from.
The master bedroom has amazing views and we will just say, some of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept on. And enough pillows to allow for a playful, pillow fight or two – and yes I won (sort of). All bedrooms have ensuites and are lockable, which is handy if you want some privacy if the whole family are staying.
One of the most interesting features of the house is the use of the marble throughout which I’ve only seen before in the middle east. It complements the innovative use of a corrugated-like wall cladding that continues the curved theme and a custom built marble dining table which is a spectacular piece of furniture.
Needless to say there is ample room inside for a couple to explore as a romantic getaway, or for the whole family or a group of friends to stay.
The thing about Townsville and Magnetic Island is that most of the fun you have is in the outdoors, with pretty amazing and consistent weather which ranges from 15 –31 degrees. Dacha doesn’t disappoint with a beautiful private pool area which overlooks the marina.
The pool has a secret alcove where you can hide away from the heat and a mounted TV (for those weekends when the Cowboys play). It is furnished accordingly with furniture where you can cuddle up and share a platter of seafood, the sunset and secrets.
Dacha is definitely worth a stay and would make a wonderful romantic surprise for the love of your life, a family or a group of friends to have a weekend away together.
Designing a master bedroom suite is a great opportunity to create a space that is not only a private retreat but also a functional and practical space. Brooke, as our head designer at Ethos Interiors, knew her space needed to be carefully considered to create a space that met the storage needs of both her and her partner Josh, to create a space for comfort and relaxation.
One of the key features of the master bedroom is its’ large size which creates a luxurious feel and room for features such as the ledge behind the bed, which serves as both a place for storage and the display of artwork. This not only adds a decorative touch to the room, but also helps to keep clutter to a minimum. The use of floating shelves in an ingress in the wall provides a creative solution and additional storage and display space for special memories.
The walk-in robe is another important element of the master bedroom suite, and it is important to consider the storage needs of both partners when designing this space. While Brooke required more full-length hanging space, Josh wanted more drawers and plenty of shoe storage. By considering the specific storage needs of each partner, the walk-in robe can be designed to meet the needs of both, making it a functional and efficient space for daily use.
The ensuite is a key element of the master bedroom suite, and it should be designed with both functionality and style in mind. For Brooke and Josh, with two young boys, getting ready together is unlikely to happen, so they prioritised a large vanity with plenty of bench space, rather than a double basin. Instead, the single oversized basin in a matte white is practical but also an elegant
statement of the room. The layout of the ensuite allows for a fully closed off toilet for privacy, and a large walk-in shower with a long ledge. The addition of vanity storage and a full-length mirrored cabinet helps to keep the ensuite looking clean, modern and clutter-free.
A well-designed master bedroom suite can make all the difference in creating a personalized space that meets both partners’ needs. By considering practical elements in advance, you can ensure a clutter-free, inviting retreat.

Well with Valentine’s Day this month and the lunar year of love, our guest this month has some great tips for young and old couples looking to buy that first home together and what to consider when you need to access finance for the purchase.
Darren Frakes has recently bought into the Bank of Queensland franchise at the Aitkenvale branch, situated within the Stocklands Shopping Centre, and is an old hand at working on a personal level with clients to help through the process. He has over 20 years of banking experience under his belt.
His top tips include:
+ Before you start looking talk to your bank. Pre-approvals can last for up to three months so it helps knowing what you can actually afford when looking for your new home
+ Consider how much rent you are currently paying to reflect what you may pay in loan repayments
+ Consider how much of a deposit you currently have. Darren and his team can help advise you if it might be better to wait and save up more for your deposit
+ Have two current payslips available or talk to Darren if you are self-employed, casual or have non-standard income streams
+ Get your finance sorted before you start looking
+ Buy when you are ready to make the move. Markets will continue to fluctuate.
The difference between working with Darren and his team compared to most banks, is that he is personally invested in you. The outcomes his branch are working towards, are all set by him. He values the team he has and the personal approach they can take towards their clientele.
As a born and bred Townsvillian, Darren loves the city and he and his wife chose to bring up both their girls here. He actively promotes the town as a resilient city with a diverse range of industries to feed the local economy and a fantastic place to bring up a family and suggests that, “In winter it’s the best place in Australia to live.”
When asked which was his favourite restaurant locally, he didn’t hesitate, “Touch of Salt, hands down. Mark and Michael would never talk to me again if I didn’t say that.”
Another great, local hatted, restaurant with amazing customer service. Watch the video to hear more about interest rate increases and more about Darren’s approach to the business of banking.

It is only a stone’s throw away from Townsville City and is home to luxury properties, bio-diverse wetlands, a bush nursery and even a golf course.
Rowes Bay is a small community of 573 people kissed by 10km of Cleveland Bay Beach and sweeping views of Magnetic Island.
The suburb covers approximately 2.8 square kilometres and is surrounded by the Town Common and Townsville Airport.
It was named after Charles Seville Rowe who was one of the first settlers at Cleveland Bay and has also been known as Rose Bay and Ross Bay pre-WWII.
A drive down the main artery of Rowes Bay will reveal a trove of shops, green spaces and community facilities including Bolton Clarke Residential Aged Care, Soroptimist Park and Big4 Holiday Parks.
The Queensland Police Service Academy is also situated in Rowes Bay after commencing training in 1996.
Janice Gallagher Real Estate Principal Owner Janice Gallagher is currently advertising a Rowes Bay beachside property for sale.
The 524sqm home perched on 805sqm of land boasts four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a heated pool with jets and a large entertainer’s patio.
Ms Gallagher said the laid-back lifestyle of Rowes Bay made the suburb a hot commodity with a diverse demographic of buyers.
“People just love beachfront because they love the sea breezes and sea views not to mention you have the walking track along the water and it’s only five minutes to the city,” she said.
“I have had very strong interest in 48 Palm Street with a few new people to town, people from down south as well as professionals and medical personnel.”
She said real estate in the inner-city suburb was always “highly sought after”.
“You are in very good company when you buy in Rowes Bay” she said.
“Houses don’t come up very often in that position and everything sells that gets listed there.”
Only just last year North Queensland Cowboys football icon Johnathan Thurston sold his home at Rowes Bay after purchasing the property in 2021 for $4.5m from golfing legend Greg Norman.
Belrowes By The Bay owner Kerry Santariga has worked in the corner store for nine years after her husband purchased the business.
Ms Santariga said she loved the positive vibe of Rowes Bay and counts many of her customers as friends.
“I just love this community because all the locals are so loyal to the business and are always up for a chat and that is what we are all about,” she said.
“The motto for the store is ‘where friends meet’ so people come in and out of the store and say hi to each other and they have that connection which I love.
“People keep coming back because we care about people and I know over 90 per cent of our customer’s names because I have been training my brain for nine years,” she said.

DANIEL CHAMPAGNE
Review:
It’s time to celebrate, so bring out the champagne. Pop the cork and get to the Bellevue Hotel on the 4th and 5th May to watch and listen to one of the finest guitar players of today.
It’s not often that I describe a musician as a pure genius, but Daniel Champagne falls into the category. The word prodigy seems to fall entirely short to describe this Aussie-born, Nashville-based guitarist.
The sound and melodies that he can achieve from his instrument are literally jaw-dropping. Champagne fuses traditional blues folk with pop showmanship, and his last release, “Trying To Hold The Setting Sun”, displays poignant lyrics, beautifully crafted melodies and exhilarating guitar talent. His voice carries the soul of the music while his hands work wonders.
Champagne is a whirlwind of captivating storytelling, folk genius and has exquisite musicianship on stage. The instrumental component of many of his songs are unbelievably intricate and can’t be fully appreciated until you have seen him in concert. It is guitar performance at its most innovative, using the entire body of the guitar to make music.
Daniel Champagne is one of a kind; picking up the guitar at the age of 5, writing songs by 12 years old and touring by 18.
Over the last 10 years, he has released 5 studio albums and has toured relentlessly around the globe with upward of 300 shows a year.
Champagne is one of the most impressive one-man shows out there and often sounds closer to a 3 piece band. His signature explosion of 2 hand-tapping body percussion and fiery runs in a swag of different tunings will leave you speechless.
Those who are precious about their guitar may be affronted by his technique, scrapping and beating the guitar to within an inch of its life. It is comprehensible how he doesn’t tear
his fingers to shred. His on-stage presence radiates a musical maturity well beyond his 21 years and demonstrates a phenomenal method of guitar playing. I have seen some great guitarists but have never heard such a sound come from one instrument.
Daniel Champagne plays two shows at the Bellevue Hotel on May 4th, and 5th and tickets are an absolute bargain at $30. Tickets are available now, and these shows will sell out, so if you want to see pure guitar mastery get in early.
Rarely does our reviewer give full marks – I’m sold. See you there!
Book tickets here to see Daniel Champagne live
