IN ASSOCIATION WITH SUMMERHALL Tickets: canadahubfringe.com | 0131 560 1581 t @canadahubfringe c @canada.hub Since its inaugural year in 2017, CanadaHub has been dedicated to showcasing exciting and thought-provoking work, with each iteration of the programme highlighting some of Canada’s most innovative performers. This year is no different, with another strong selection of work from across the breadth of Canada arriving at the Edinburgh Fringe, presenting varying perspectives on Canadian representation and the complexities of nationhood. Of the key themes explored throughout the Fringe, climate change is undoubtedly a central concern for many companies. This year’s CanadaHub programme features two shows that interrogate this theme; Sea Sick and Pathetic Fallacy.

4 CANADA

Sea Sick sees best-selling Canadian author and journalist Alanna Mitchell expand on her book of the same name, presenting a true voyage of discovery in the process. Having journeyed to the bottom of the ocean, Alanna has seen first-hand how we are altering its chemistry, and how close these changes have brought us to climate catastrophe. Taking a different approach, Pathetic Fallacy, conceived by Vancouver artist Anita Rochon, looks at how to make a show about climate change while keeping your carbon footprint low. In the show, a different performer takes to the stage every night, with Anita giving direction via video-link from Canada. The piece uses various artistic devices and techniques

to question our changing relationship to the weather in the face of a coming storm. Another one-person show, Blind Date, has been devised by Canadian comic and clown Rebecca Northan, who has performed sold-out runs to audiences in New York, London and across Canada. She makes her Edinburgh debut in the role of red-nosed Mimi, who invites a different audience member on stage each night for a 90-minute live, off-the-cuff blind date. Elsewhere on the programme, CanadaHub will be partnering with Onishka Productions and O’Kaadenigan Wingashk Collective to present Indigenous Contemporary Scene (ICS). Founded by Montreal-based artist Emilie Monnet, ICS will showcase critical work from Indigenous artists from Canada. Deer Woman, by ARTICLE 11, is a comedic-dramatic thriller about one of 1600 officially recognised missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada. Lila, the missing girl’s sister, refuses to stand idly by, and sets out to seek revenge while exercising the skills taught to her by the Canadian government. Songs in the Key of Cree is a night of old-school cabaret style songs from legendary Canadian playwright and songwriter Tomson Highway, who has written a series of musicals in Cree, one of Canada’s most widely spoken native languages.

Native Girl Syndrome

Indigenous Contemporary Scene (ICS), produced by Onishka Productions and O’Kaadenigan Wingashk Collective, is bringing a variety of live arts and discussions to the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Edinburgh International Book Festival this August. Emilie Monnet, Artistic Director of ICS, explains how the programme amplifies the voices of Indigenous artists in Canada and highlights the conversation around what it means to be Indigenous today. On the primary goals behind the ICS programme Indigenous Contemporary Scene (ICS), founded by Onishka productions, exists as a nomadic platform for the presentation of live arts by Indigenous artists. It’s also a space for conversations and creative exchanges between artists and communities. ICS Scotland will take place over a period of two years: from July 2019 to September 2020. It is an invitation to challenge perceptions of the shared history between Scotland and Kanata (aka Canada) and venture further into the interconnectedness of past, present, and future.

trying to eradicate and assimilate our identities, our cultures are vibrant and our languages still exist. That we have survived, we are still here and we see ourselves in the future. There is so much happening in our communities, so many outstanding artists; this programme provides a glimpse into them. Songs In The Key of Cree, CanadaHub @ King’s Hall, 31 Jul–18 Aug (not 5, 12), 7pm, £11 (£9). Deer Woman, CanadaHub @ King’s Hall, 31 Jul–24 Aug (not 5, 12, 19), 2.30pm, £11 (£9).

On fostering discussions on the representation of indigenous voices

Kiinalik: These Sharp Tools, The Studio, 2–5 Aug, 7.30pm (and 2pm, 3, 5 Aug), £20.

The Edinburgh Festivals are one of the most powerful festival coalitions in the world and our hope is that the conversations will ripple out of our circle. Many Indigenous artists will be in Edinburgh at this time and having this critical mass will certainly be inspiring and stimulating. Being in Scotland in the context of ICS will be an opportunity for all of us to reflect – or continue to reflect – on identity, history and ancestry in new ways.

The RCMP is unique within the Commonwealth, as a police corps that carries battle honours. The baldric of the Drum Major and the regimental drums of the Band bear battle and campaign honours that connect the RCMP to the Crown through service in South Africa and both World Wars. If you look closely, you will see band members wearing more current campaign medals dating from United Nations (UN) service in the Former Yugoslavia to NATO service in Afghanistan. 9 Church Hill Theatre, 3–6 Aug, 6pm (and 2pm, 4 Aug), £12.50–£25 Our senses allow us to apprehend the world around us. How is it possible to capture the monumental grandeur of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony if, like its composer, our hearing is impaired? Montreal-based dance company Cas Public’s 9 brings this challenge to vivid life through a bold journey of sensation. A work for families choreographed by Hélène Blackburn.

THE WELL-TEMPERED CLAVIER Usher Hall, 12 Aug, 7.30pm; 14 Aug, 7pm, £12–£35 Angela Hewitt has received global acclaim for her piano recitals; dazzling with their dexterity, yet captivating with their wisdom and joy. BREAKING BREAD – EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL Tuesday 6 August, 6pm, £15 – The Lyceum Rehearsal Studio, 30B Grindlay St, EH3 9AX Come for a meal hosted by an artist, inviting you to think and talk together. Be our guests at a meal with a difference and stick around afterwards for a programme of evening gatherings in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The Artistic Director of Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times, Evalyn Perry, who created and appears in Kiinalik: These Sharp Tools will host Breaking Bread on 6 August. To book a place, please visit: eif.co.uk BREAKING INTO THE CANADIAN MARKET Tuesday 20 August, 11.30am–12.30pm – Inspace, Crichton Street, EH8 9AB The session will focus on sharing knowledge and experience about the successes, challenges and opportunities for international touring to Canada; and facilitating networking opportunities between Canadians and their UK and international counterparts. CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS The Canada Council for the Arts is Canada’s public arts funder, with a mandate to foster and promote the study and enjoyment of, and the production of works in the arts. The Council champions and invests in artistic excellence through a broad range of grants, services, prizes and payments to professional Canadian artists and arts organisations. Its work ensures that excellent, vibrant and diverse art and literature engages Canadians, enriches their communities and reaches markets around the world. The Council also raises public awareness and appreciation of the arts through its communications, research and arts promotion activities. It is responsible for the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, which promotes the values and programs of UNESCO in Canada to contribute to a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable future. The Canada Council Art Bank operates art rental programs and helps further public engagement with contemporary arts. The Canada Council is the primary partner for CanadaHub and the Indigenous Contemporary Scene in Edinburgh, contributing to a greater international presence of diverse artistic voices from Canada. The Canada Council is funding the participation of Canadian delegates in the Momentum Program in collaboration with the British Council and, as a complement to this program, providing mentorship opportunities for Canadian artists and professionals attending the Edinburgh Festivals. Additionally, the Canada Council is providing support to the Edinburgh International Art Festival to commission a work by artist Corin Sworn. And, through its regular granting programme, is funding numerous other artists coming to Edinburgh. We are proud to support Canada’s continued presence in Edinburgh during the renowned festival month of August, offering the world a window into Canada as we create opportunities for artists to reach new audiences from across the globe.
