welcome to editor’s letter Katelyn Gendron

Set your sights on exploration Reading through this month’s cover story about optometrist and entrepreneur Sheila Gibbs got me thinking about the power of sight – foresight, hindsight and every other sight in between. Is it better to have the foresight to know which personal/professional pitfalls to avoid? Or is it more gratifying to have hindsight and learn from your mistakes? Or, do we just throw caution to the wind, as they say, and trust in destiny’s vision for us all? Suffice as to say, I’ve yet to come up with an answer for myself but it has been an interesting month of self-exploration. There’s one uncomplicated passion of mine, however, that has only ever required my sight in the traditional sense and that’s my exploration of the world. This season each year is my favorite for Lioness because we team up with Gutsy Women Travel to bring you various trips that far too few ever experience. I’ve been traveling internationally since childhood and have been bless with the vision to see cultures across five of the seven continents. In this issue, Gutsy Women take readers to an African safari, the mouth-watering delicacies of Europe’s culture and cuisine, as well as provide them with a musical education that can only be obtained in the American South. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to each of the aforementioned locations and I can say – using my power of hindsight – that I’ve never regretted a single adventure. Trust me when I say that travel is always a good idea, even if you have to finance it, although I’m not sure our financial columnist, Michelle Perry Higgins, will agree. My advice, take it or leave it, is to get out there and start traveling and using not only your vision but also all your senses! Why? Well if you really need a reason, I’ll give you mine: Life is a ball. Let’s play!

Gibbs has sights on optimal career By Paige Cerulli

Shelia Gibbs of Springfield, Mass., knew that she wanted to help people. That desire to improve the lives of others was a major factor in her decision to become an optician and later open Optical Expressions, the business she co-owns and runs with her husband, Derryl Gibbs.

Shelia’s road from a married, mother of five to business owner was a lengthy one; she met and married Derryl while attending Western New England University in Springfield, Mass., and spent the next 10 years caring for her their children before going back to school to earn her degree in optometry. Working as an optician for 13 years gave her the knowledge to finally realize the dream of opening her own practice, Optical Expressions, with Derryl in February 2009.

“[I’m] proud to say that, with Optical Expressions being a minority-owned business, people recognize it as a staple in the Springfield area,” Sheila said, noting that getting funding to start the business proved challenging at first.

Sheila Gibbs with her husband, Derryl Gibbs

In hindsight, Shelia said that she would have looked into possible grants for minority-owned businesses. She admitted that when she and Derryl began the business, she hadn’t known that such financial help and opportunities might have been available. “It’s still a struggle

to get over that starting line [of beginning a business] but we are very happy where we are now,” Sheila said. The field of optometry is closely tied to the medical field whereas primary care doctors refer their patients for eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses. “When people go see their primary care doctors, the doctors take care of the body as a whole. We take care of the needs of the eyes, which is essential to the whole body. I’ve always wanted to help people. Instead of helping people get well, I am now helping people see the world more clearly and in a new light,” she said.

Optical Expressions, a fashionable eyewear boutique, provides its customers with eyeglasses and contacts. Sheila said the boutique prides itself on carrying a wide range of products and personalized customer service. Frames are available in myriad trendy styles, including designer frames; the large selection ensures that Optical Expressions has frames for every budget, she noted.

Today, Optical Expressions has two locations: Its primary office is on Allen Street in the Bicentennial Plaza in Springfield. Given the business’ initial success, Shelia and Derryl had hoped to expand its accessibility by opening a satellite location in downtown Springfield. However, given the damage the

area sustained from the June 1, 2011 tornado, they were forced to close the satellite location due to lack of business.

Currently, Optical Expressions has a satellite location on Page Boulevard in East Springfield. “We moved there because there are no other opticians in that area, and it’s convenient for the people of Indian Orchard or Chicopee who want to support our business,” Shelia explained. When asked if owning her own business was everything she’d hoped, Sheila replied that she enjoys it greatly, and that if she had to do it all over again, she “would not have done too much differently.”

According to Shelia, “Being a business owner is a very rewarding experience, as it feels good to know that the people who visit Optical Expressions are treated with respect and they leave here happy. The staff here is very friendly and we treat people with the Golden Rule [Do unto others as you would have others do unto you]. Hearing people say, ‘Wow, I look great!’ or, ‘You all gave me the best service I’ve had,’ makes me happy. I know that we are doing what we set out to do – give people personalized service.”

ASK An ENTREPRENEUR

Photos courtesy of Greetings by Cristine

1) How long have you been in business? It will be one year this September!

2) Why have you chosen to dedicate yourself to this particular business/industry? For years, making greeting cards for friends and family was just a hobby. I enjoyed adding special touches to Christmas and birthday cards, incorporating elements that were significant to our relationships. A few friends and family have even asked me to design their bridal shower invitations. For as many cards as I have made, at least two people have urged me to turn this into a business. Last year, I threw away my doubts and took that advice; I just love seeing customers smile as they pick out a card and tell me about the special person they plan to give it to and the occasion they’re giving it for.

3) What makes business/product unique? I wanted my cards to standout from products out there today, so I chose a size of 5.5 by 5.5 for my standard line of cards. I like to incorporate a variety of paper products and embellishments to create texture and dimension. At first, I was frustrated that I couldn’t find a supplier that carried an envelope to fit my cards, so I decided to create my own envelope template (and glue!) so that each card could have its own unique, coordinating wrapper with a perfect fit.

4) You could have worked for anyone and would have been successful, why become an

12

LIONESS JULY 2013

entrepreneur? Being an entrepreneur allows one to work freely and fully in her passion. While I am quite content working my day job in arts advocacy, I know that I won’t reach true professional satisfaction until I am able to commit 100 percent of my time and energy to the things I love doing the most.

5) What was your last, “why did I go into business for myself” moment? When I got caught in a rain storm at an arts festival in Maryland: Paper and water do not mix! Fortunately, most of my products and supplies survived and the festival was still well attended. Clean up, though, was not fun!

6) Every female professional should have __________. A motivational, positive, and realistic friend on speed dial. That friend needs to be able to encourage you when you’re down, discourage you when you want to quit, and ask you those tough questions about your business that you won’t ask yourself because you may fear the answers.

7) If you could steal some business mojo from another mogul, who would it be and why? Definitely the one and only Ms. Debbie Allen. She has become a household name in her industry – dance – and she has stayed relevant, respected, and sought after through changing times and trends. I admire her as a dancer myself and appreciate what she has

The Lipstick Chronicles

Dating and budgeting … Does it work? By Kristina Chapell

My move to Atlanta (really Johns Creek, Ga.) has brought excitement and worries. I am lucky to have a job but it only pays the bills and leaves little for much else. Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled to have made the move, I have great friends, and I am so glad I can pay my bills but at 32 I want to go out and have fun and not always worry if buying a few coffees or drinks will mean I need to cut something else out until the next pay period.

I know we have all been there at one time or another. Ah, the dreaded budget. How can we rob Peter to pay Paul and for dinner and drinks, and, well, I am finding a way to make it work. I clip coupons (I have never done this before), I shop at three different grocery stores for the best deals (they are all within two miles of one another), and I write everything down in my check register to know where I stand financially at any moment. Combine that with a budget app and my bank’s mobile app and I am in control of my money; I just want more. But all of this makes me wonder: Can dating and budgeting really work?

If I chose to use an online dating service that is more money I need to budget for. If I use a free service, are the guys only looking for one thing? Does paying mean you’re more invested and not looking just for a booty call? What if I do have a date? Do I have to pay? Am I willing to cut out a few Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks coffees (yes I frequent both) to afford a dinner out or a

few drinks with a stranger?

Add the above concerns to a mix of nerves, uncertainty on where to go in a new location (I have been here now for five months now), what to talk about, and what to wear and the question becomes “is it really worth it?” I have to be honest and say I have asked that question many times in the past two months. Is it worth me spending money on uncertain dates? I don’t have the best answer personally but I did what every good writer does – researched it.

First dates are stressful enough so keep them short. Meet for coffee, drinks or even ice cream. This is two-fold, it allows you to meet the guy but makes it a “short” amount of time so if you aren’t feeling that spark you have an out. If you are feeling a spark, you can continue to sit and chat or go somewhere else.

If the first few dates went well or you’ve been dating for a while but need to watch the budget, forego the fancy restaurants or movies. It is summer and there are often things to do outside. In Atlanta, there is yoga and movies in Central Park during the week. Many cities offer similar outdoor events. If not, there are parks or greens around in almost any city or town so get out and have a picnic. There is something fun and romantic about a checkered blanket, a straw basket, and plastic wine glasses.

Maybe it is time to meet the friends. Ask your friends to help plan a house party and you can all pitch in on food and drinks. House parties are fun in the summer with a cooler full of drinks, the grill going, music and outdoor games. It’s cheap and fun and if anyone drinks too much – they can stay

over. My friends and I do this often regardless of anyone dating and it is so much fun. You spend less money and hang out with people you really enjoy. What can be better?

I had to laugh at this suggestion from a friend but it’s worth a shot – the sample date. Got a Costco card? Go to Costco on the weekend and try all of the food samples. And if you’re still hungry, a hot dog and soda usually cost less than $2. I have to admit this is the first time I heard this but I have a guy friend who loves doing this with his girlfriend and she agreed it was something she looks forward to too. They say it is corny but they love it. Oh, and they don’t buy anything when they go – just sample and maybe food but no groceries; that’s saved for another visit.

Lastly, don’t be afraid of coupons. Much like I do with cutting my coupons for food and self-care items check out LivingSocial.com or Groupon.com and see what they have for deals in your area. Often times there are good deals for the movies or restaurants. There are options for dating on a budget just like there are options for “living” on a budget. It’s scary because when you first meet someone you don’t want to share your budget woes but you can still date and be savvy about your budgeting and what you share. My goal for the month: Go on a cheap date and have fun regardless of the outcome.

I am curious, what are your favorite dating tips when living on a budget? Tweet me at @krischapell and let me know. ~ xoxoxo KC

ASK An ENTREPRENEUR done to grow her dance business, [which] is nothing that I can’t do to grow my greeting card business.

8) What is your business motto? I have a personal motto that I apply to every area of my life, including Greetings By Cristine. It’s “Everything in life is a decision.” If I want to be successful in this business, I have to decide that this is “worth it.” I have to decide to dedicate time to creating new designs, meeting customers, and promoting my product. I have to decide to create balance in my life, and I have to decide that I can go as far as I want to.

9) If you could give other entrepreneurs three tips, what would they be? Plan: Passion alone isn’t enough to make a business successful. Do the research and legwork it takes to get established and set yourself a part from your competitors. Assess: Check in with yourself periodically to see if you are meeting your goals and if you are still happy in your business. Pace yourself: Don’t rush into financial and emotional chaos because you want to see fast success. Be OK with growing your business slowly and steadily, and be patient with yourself as you grow your entrepreneurial skills.

10) Has there been a piece of technology or software that has been a lifesaver to you? God bless the iPad! There are so many mobile payment and inventory apps out there that help me take my business on the go. The iPad allows me to exhibit just about anywhere.

11) What is your goal for the next year? My goal next year is to get Greetings by Cristine designs into local gift boutiques. I’m currently in talks with an owner of a local flower shop about creating designs for her out of flower seed paper that is able to be planted.

12) When someone is telling their friend about your business, what do you hope they say? Do you know about Greetings by Cristine? No? Well then, you need to find out!

Whoopi Goldberg won’t come up short

Academy Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award-winner Whoopi Goldberg (“Ghost,” “The Color Purple,” “The View”) will headline and executive produce the Lifetime Original Movie “A Day Late and a Dollar Short,” based on the New York Times bestseller by Terry McMillan (“Waiting to Exhale,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”). The announcement was made by Rob Sharenow, executive vice president, general manager, of Lifetime.

In “A Day Late and a Dollar Short,” when irascible matriarch Viola Price (Goldberg) learns that her next asthma attack is likely to kill her, she sets out to fix her fractured family before she sets a foot anywhere near the grave. In this quest she has to contend with sibling rivalry, teen pregnancy and prescription drug addiction – and that’s just one of her four kids. There’s also a jailbird son to teach how to be a better father, a granddaughter in bigger trouble than her mother is willing to admit and an estranged husband to rescue from his scheming young girlfriend. It’s the kind of meddling that the Price family hasn’t experienced from Viola in decades, and she won’t have an easy time bending her loved ones to her will.

The project reunites Goldberg with McMillan, having co-starred opposite Angela Basset in the motion picture adaptation of McMillan’s novel “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.” Goldberg also executive produced the Lifetime drama “Strong Medicine” from 2000 to 2006, as well as the 2001 Lifetime Original Movie “What Makes a Family.”

“Terry McMillan is one of America’s most beloved writers and ‘A Day Late and a Dollar Short’ combines her signature emotional storytelling with the complex characters viewers identify with and love. We are thrilled to be working again with Whoopi Goldberg, who will be emptying

16

her enormous talents both in front of and behind the camera,” Sharenow said.

Production on “A Day Late and a Dollar Short” will take place this summer for a 2014 premiere. Produced by Ostar Productions, the film will be executive produced by Stephen Tolkin (“Perception,” “Brothers & Sisters”), Goldberg and Tom Leonardis (“Ruby’s Bucket of Blood”), Jeffrey Hayes (“Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King,” “The Starter Wife”) and Bill Haber (“Rizzoli & Isles,” “Beauty and the Beast”). Tolkin will direct from a script by Shernold Edwards (“Haven”).

In addition to her illustrious career as a performer and author, Goldberg and her producing partner, Leonardis, executive produced the Lifetime original drama series “Strong Medicine” from 2000 to 2006, the longest-running original drama created for basic cable at that time and the first cable show to go into syndication. They executive produced the Emmy Awardwinning “Hollywood Squares,” as well as the Lifetime original movie, “What Makes a Family” and Showtime’s “Ruby’s Bucket of Blood,” in addition to executive producing and starring in the TNT Original Movie, “Call Me Claus” and the Showtime original, “Good Fences.” She won the Tony Award as a producer of the hit Broadway musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” produced and starred in the Broadway revival of Ma Rainey’s “Black Bottom” and produced the West End, Broadway and worldwide touring productions of “Sister Act: The Musical,” in addition to various projects for Nickelodeon, FEARnet.com and Discovery. Next up, Goldberg produces and makes her directorial debut with her documentary about the legendary Moms Mabley, “I Got Somethin’ to Tell You,” which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival and will premiere on HBO in November.

Healthy Lives Campaign & Walkathon: Health matters because you matter By Rev. Dana Rondel

There are those who, because of their limited understanding of spiritual phenomena, the invisible world, and its laws and principles, too, have little knowledge of what actually leads us away from our organic state of internal harmony and outer balance – perfect health. Perfect health allows for a more lovecentered, joy-filled, prosperous and beautifully lived life, a life greatly influenced by our perception of God, of self, of others and of the world. Therefore, it is vital that we all strive to do what is basic and natural to sustain perfect health: Know thy own mind.

Wisdom In New Dimensions (WIND) Foundation, Temple and Spiritual Center looks forward to growing others’ awareness globally. Our organization’s primary means of doing so is by sharing knowledge and wisdom gained through life study and experience. As a church, we focus not only on the spiritual life, our fundamental relationship with God, but as well on our mental, emotional and physical self. True, positive and sustained spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health requires a holistic approach, which lets us focus on the full individual rather than on only part of an individual. The more we realize who and what we are as “spiritual human-beings”

the more we conceive how much authority we have over our own lives and the more we know about our ability to co-create with the infinite, the greatest and highest good we aspire to have.

Written here, is just a glimpse into what I, lead minister over WIND, aims to share with people throughout the world. One of several ways I intend to reach others and to expand their awareness is through the Healthy Lives Campaign & Walkathon. The Healthy Lives Campaign & Walkathon’s message, spoken most clear and simple is: “Perfect Health Begins with you.” And we’ll prove it! Take a walk with us, a walk that becomes part of your life’s journey, a journey that matters, because you do.

HARLEM, N.Y. HARTFORD, CT SEE YOU THERE.

Our walk in Harlem, N.Y., is on Sept. 14 at 9 a.m. and in Bushnell Park in Hartford, Conn., on Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. Your present size doesn’t matter. Your present age doesn’t matter, nor does your present physical condition, but what does matter is what you think, what you know and what you do with the added knowledge and wisdom you’ll gain by being part of the Healthy Lives Campaign & Walkathon. Even if you cannot physically join us, we hope you can make a contribution to further support our efforts.

Rev. Dana Rondel is the founder and lead minister of the Wisdom In New Dimensions (WIND) Foundation, Temple and Spiritual Center, an international panoptic organization (church), focused on expanding awareness regarding the life of the spirit world, the mental mind and the intuition of the heart through the universal and creative arts and sciences. She is also the founder and president of Partners In Goodwill Publications & Media, formed to write, design and create inspirational content for all media platforms. Rondel has built two organizations that for several years has significantly and positively impacted and transformed the lives of people and of communities globally. She is still moving forward, innovating creating and broadening her community initiatives and writing more inspirational works of literature that will each continue to touch peoples’ lives in the most miraculous and intriguing ways. How to retire rich while you’re still young By Michelle Perry Higgins

Thousands of college graduates will be (hopefully) entering the workforce this summer. While the urge for many will be to start spending what they earn, saving a few extra dollars today can allow you to retire in style years down the road. Retirement may seem like it’s a long way off right now, but it will come at you faster than you think.

Here’s four simple tips that you should follow in your 20s that will put you in good stead when you’re ready to stop working for good and go out to play.

1. Create the smartest budget possible – Living within your means sounds like a smart goal, but not everyone understands how to go about it. When planning your budget, be sure to consider every single part of your life. Start tracking your expenses as soon as you find employment. That way you will have a clear understanding of your cash flow from the very beginning.

2. Set up a financial safety net – One of your first goals as a young professional should be to set up a buffer for yourself against uncertainty. You never know what’s coming around the corner. Build a defense against the next big dip in the economy, job

loss or unexpected car repairs. Having a safety net can alleviate stress and improves your chances of not falling behind on important bills when life throws you curveballs.

3. Always pay bills on time – Be a stickler about financial punctuality. Stay on top of things like your student loan payments and your credit card bills. Not only will this keep your credit score from taking unnecessary hits, but you’ll also avoid pesky late fees that can add up over time. When you are ready to apply for a real estate or small business loan, banks want to see a long history of good financial habits. Paying your bills on time now is a good way to make a good impression on a loan officer later.

4. Start saving for retirement early – Although to someone in her 20s retirement might feel like it’s a thousand years away, it’s never too soon to start saving. The more you save now, the less you will have to set aside in your 30s and 40s. Plus, the interest your savings accrues today will compound itself many times over the course of 20 to 30 years. While following these tips may not be at the forefront of the mind of a 20-something, there is a great deal of security that comes with being in charge of your financial present and a bright financial future. Making conscious and smart decisions now, right out of the gate, means options and flexibility for the future. It means not being financially vulnerable when it counts, and that’s really important.

bold, curvy women. Now this designer also caters to all sizes but I must compliment them on their line for the fuller figured women because they went outside the box. Prints, bright colors, retro designs, I mean you name it and I am sure you can find it on their site. Their suits draw you in and make you want to be courageous and confident enough to step on the beach and own your look, your body, and that beach or poolside. Their prices are reasonable and I also love the fact that their suits go fast where they may restock them or they may not so you can walk around ecstatic knowing that you are wearing an original piece. Let Nakimuli bring you outside of your comfort zone a little bit; you’ll thank them later!

Empress Lingerie, “Giving Curves The Royal Treatment,” is by far one of my favorites as well. “Giving Curves The Royal Treatment!”

Ladies, being confident and comfortable is not hard at all it just requires patience to find what “suits” your body type. So again, please remember to make the fitting room your friend. When ordering online make sure you read the return policies carefully and go over the measurement charts before purchasing a size “you think” you can fit. "Don't ever be afraid to help yourself, love yourself and build your confidence level up. We are our own worse critics, so take the time out, figure out what you don’t like, and then take the steps to fix it. Don’t be afraid, for God gave us the spirit of love, use that love on yourself first!" – Signing off, Aliyah Cherrisse!

Managing Me

Mentoring helps others find their inner ‘lioness’ By Brenda’s Child

I recently attended an awards ceremony where Dora Robinson, executive director of the United Way, Springfield, Mass., spoke about how true leadership means paving the way and being prepared to step back and allow future leaders to emerge. Coincidentally, this woman not only paved the way for me, she came back, put me on the road, and has been my GPS whenever I veered off path.

Robinson gave me my first youth development job 14 years ago and it is because of this woman that I found my calling relatively early in adulthood. The impact she had on me created a ripple effect; in turn, I can proudly say I have impacted the lives of numerous youth, who are now beginning to do the same. If they aren’t in youth-serving professions, they have tapped into their talents and gifts and are now affecting change in the world.

What does this have to do with Managing Me? Well, I am inspired and motivated by the evidence that my life has a purpose and it matters. Most of us tell ourselves that life matters and our families “need us” but when you can look and see that a person is doing something wonderful in the world and it’s largely due to you, well, it feels awesome. I encourage you to mentor another young lady so they can find their inner “lioness” and you can begin your legacy.
