The weather is really getting better now and summer feels like it’s arrived. I’ve even got my shorts out, just another few degrees warmer and I may even put them on!

Our local area is looking fabulous, all credit to our local town councils for their efforts with the floral displays this year.

I hope you all enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations, both watching the amazing national events on TV and joining in with the well organised local events.

North Devon Show Free Bus Travel

‘announced for advance ticket holders to North Devon Show' THE SHOW GOES ON… It’s back, and it’s going to be better than ever! After a two-year Covid enforced absence, The North Devon Show goes full steam ahead on Wednesday 3rd August, with Livestock Classes now open for entry.

Celebrating the region’s rural, agricultural and equestrian heritage, this year’s Show also features a host of entertainment and activities, all geared at making it a special day out for all the family.

Show Secretary Theresa Soanes said, “We’re all delighted that the Show is back, and from the messages we’ve received it’s been really missed by the North Devon public. A number of visiting tourists enjoy the event too, and this year we’d like to make it as family friendly as possible, with extra entertainment laid on to accompany all the traditional events.”

Regular events include most of the usual livestock classes, plus Pig and Poultry displays and a Horticultural Show. This year a new ‘Food Village’ is set to replace the old food hall alongside a Crafts and Gifts Marquee, Trade Stands, Equestrian events, Dog Shows and all the usual Main Ring activities.

A bumper side show of entertainment is planned including a Music Stage, Circus, strongman Mighty Adrian Smith, a BMX Display team, Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, Vintage Cars and Tractors, plus children’s fairground rides and much more.

The venue remains the same, at Barton Farm, Umberleigh, but this year an agreement between the Show’s organisers and Stagecoach means that FREE bus travel is available for anyone purchasing an advance ticket. Theresa Soanes said, “I’m so pleased we can offer this to everyone who buys a ticket in advance. Busses will go from Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington and South Molton, plus a link from Umberleigh railway station too. It really encourages use of public transport and it allows you to be dropped off right at the entrance, with priority access for all the buses, so no worrying about car queues. It helps everyone do their bit for the environment, and save on carbon emissions.”

Bideford At last, Summer has arrived and everything in the Town is in full bloom – the Town Planters, Hanging Baskets and the Port Memorial flowerbed.

And . . . we have a new Mayor. Elected by her fellow Town Councillors, Mrs Jude Gubb has become our first lady Mayor for 14 years! She is also an East Ward Councillor and a member of Torridge District Council too. Many of you will know her as DJ Jude – her own business and a job she has done for a couple of decades and loves. So, if you are at a wedding or a party of any kind in this area and you think the DJ looks like the Bideford Mayor – it probably is! The Mayor will be supported by her Consort, husband Michael Gubb (Gubby to many).

On being voted in, the Mayor thanked Councillors and the former Mayor, Councillor David Ratcliff, for their confidence in her and promised to be the best ambassador to Bideford that she could be. She said “I am the third of our family to have the honour and privilege to be Town Mayor – my brothers Tony and Simon have both been Mayor”.

She has chosen two very local charities for her term both of which reflect her interests – Slightly Different Singing Group, a collective of musicians and singers who have suffered from various debilitating illnesses who get together for company and for the love of music. And the other is Hedwigs Hotel, a rescue, Bideford Mayor, Councillor Mrs Jude recovery and return to the wild organisation for Hedgehogs Gubb with Consort Mr Michael Gubb a not-for-profit, volunteer led group.

Another East Ward Councillor was voted in as Deputy Mayor. Councillor Jamie McKenzie was delighted to take up the role, adding that he felt he was ready for the post and he promised to support the Mayor to the best of his ability. He will be supported by his Deputy Mayoress and wife, Mrs Zofia McKenzie.

Bideford Town Council would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came along and took part in our Jubilee Celebrations, whether as a spectator, stall-holder, attraction or volunteer (especially the volunteers), even the weather was kind!

Now we start to look forward to the other events we are planning for this year. The Pannier Market have one of their very popular Arts and Crafts Market - run with Torridge Arts and Crafts. Local makers and creators will have a great selection of excellent hand made products where there is something for everyone with loads of craft stalls, fresh food, snacks, cooked food and more. That is on Saturday 30th July from 10am until 3pm.

We have been pleased to see the return of the Soapbox Derby, an event that was hugely supported last year and again this year. The Water Festival and Cardboard Boat Regatta is set to go ahead on Sunday 24 th July, hilarious fun for all and definitely a date for the diary.

You will, by now, have noticed that there is an addition in Victoria Park, to the games picnic tables, in the form of a Table Tennis table. Thanks to Mrs Tonia Quance and the Bideford Town Centre Partnership, with funding from Councillors Mrs Langford, Mrs Hellyer and Mr Bushby as well as their own fundraising efforts, the Table Tennis table is free for all to use, with bats and balls available from the kiosk.

Feature And hats and sunspecs…oh yes they do.

Is there anyone who doesn’t know that sunbathing with too little skin protection is dangerous? As well as being painful sunburn can be a prelude to skin cancer later in life.

Unfortunately, it seems that men are complacent about sun protection, and die from skin cancer at almost twice the rate of women.

Sunburn is the damage caused to skin by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

Sadly for Brits, UV rays are not blocked by cloud cover so we should always use a sunscreen, even in the absence of blue skies. And the sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm, so use this time to take a break in the shade.

Sunburn is not just a holiday problem.

Most of us burn when we’re not really aware of being exposed to the sun: a children’s sports day; gardening or walking the dog are all potential sunburn situations.

Australians had a fabulous campaign to counteract the effects of the strong Antipodean sun. Their catchphrase: "Slip, Slop, Slap ", reminds them to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. But this year they ran a Sun Smart campaign aimed primarily at men, who often fail to realise the value of sunscreen.

Skin cancer can be lethal, but it’s also largely preventable, and most skin cancers can be avoided by using good sun protection.

The Australian campaign features a dad protecting all the household items he cares about such as the car, decking and the barbeque from the effects of harmful UV. His young son then points out the

irony that he’s forgotten to protect his own skin. The takeaway message is, if you cover something it lasts longer. That applies to your possessions but more importantly it applies to your skin – at any age.

If you know you are going to be exposed to the sun for several hours, wear a wide-brimmed hat, loose long-sleeved shirt, and long trousers. Baseball caps may be the hat of choice for British men but they don’t provide the necessary protection for the delicate skin on the back of the neck.

Choose a ‘Foreign Legion’ style hat instead with cloth that hangs down at the back, or a wide-brimmed Panama. Don’t forget close-fitting wrap-around sunspecs to protect your eyes. Look for sunglasses stamped with BS EN ISO 12312-1 for general use, and BS ISO 12312-3 if you participate regularly in outdoor activities such as running or cycling etc.

Poor application of sunscreen is a common way to get sunburnt. Areas often overlooked are inside the top of the arms, tops of the ears and at the edges of clothes and swimwear. Apply sunscreen generously and reapply regularly, especially after swimming or exercise.

Take extra care with balding heads where the skin is extremely delicate. Use a total sun block or a hat.

Remember, some medicines, including some antibiotics and anti-depressants, can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunburn. Ask your GP for information if you are concerned.

Northam My year as Mayor started with the most pleasurable of duties, visiting every nursery school and school in the parish to present Northam Town Council's very splendid Platinum Jubilee medals complete with red, white and blue ribbons, to every child. I had no idea when I set off that there were over a thousand children in schools in our parish.

Talking of red, white and blue ribbons. What an effort Appledore made there.

Knitted bunting running the length of the quay was absolutely splendid.

Our Platinum Jubilee celebrations started with the reading of the Jubilee Proclamation in Northam Square, followed in the evening by the lighting of the beacon on Bone Hill, This was made even more special with the newly formed “Platinum Jubilee” community choir performing the especially commissioned, song for the Jubilee.

On the Sunday I attended a Jubilee picnic in Westward Ho! park. The rain held off long enough for us to consume the Platinum Jubilee trifle.

I have attended three Mayor Making ceremonies giving me a chance to meet my fellow mayors and hear their plans for the coming year. Some were really quite exciting the Ilfracombe Mayor is going to attempt to fly, launching himself off the end of Ilfracombe pier to raise money for his chosen charities!

I'm not sure how I can follow that but I will be doing my very best to raise as much as I can for my chosen charities, my first is the Royal National Lifeboat Institute Appledore Station, the dedication of the crew and the whole support team are a credit to Appledore and our Parish.

The Northern Devon Food Bank is my second charity. Their role has never been more important than it will be in the coming year the cost of living is going to mean that families, many of whom who have never received benefits before are going to find themselves struggling. As a council we must do all we can to help, making sure that our residents have all the information they may need to get help. I have spent time with the food bank. If you wish to help I can tell you what they really need is tinned fruit and vegetables. In these difficult times, I thought the following information and free phone number may help anyone struggling to make ends meet.

Operating in England and Wales, the helpline offers personalised advice and support to help address the underlying causes of the hardship, as well as a quick and seamless referral to a food bank for people if required.
