Editorial Not Giving Up The onset of January always brings resolutions, but this year I feel a sense of aversion to the whole idea. And so the theme for this issue, and my personal 2022 is Not Giving Up. Who could demonstrate this better than the joy-bringing Cara Mathia, this month’s cover artist, whose lockdown dances had the world celebrating. Don’t give up on your dreams- if you have an idea, why not sign up for the LEAP programme (page 19) and start to make it a reality. A big thank you to all the contributors to this magazine. If you wish to write, or if there is a local topic, person or pet you would like us to write about please do not hesitate to get in contact on editorial@thelewesian.co.uk Sally, Editor If you are intersted in advertising your business in The LEWESIAN please contact 01273 551021 or email info@thelewesian.co.uk

Railway Land Wildlife Trust Award The Railway Land Wildlife Trust has been awarded £233K in funding from The National Lottery Community Fund! After the Lewes-Uckfield branch line was closed the 25 acre site of sidings and embankment became derelict and, as developers closed in, residents worked together to have the land designated as a nature reserve. In 1988, The Railway Land Wildlife Trust was formed and in 1995 the site was declared a Local Nature Reserve. The Linklater Pavilion was built in 2010 and is the hub of their work connecting young people to the environment.

They will use their funding over a 3 year period across Lewes District, raising awareness of green infrastructure and the many benefits it brings to communities. The project will focus on biodiversity, adapting to increased severe weather events such as flooding and heatwaves, and improving wellbeing both mentally and physically. There is an emphasis on empowering young people to drive change.

Family Mediation Week 2022 and Adele You may have heard of ‘D’ day where solicitors are contacted about divorce in the New Year of every year. I wouldn’t say that there is actually a ‘D’ day. But it is true that (in pre-covid times) there would be an increase in enquiries after any protracted holiday period. So that’s true in early January as much as early September. Every year a week is dedicated to family mediation. This year it’s from 17 th January to 22 nd January. There are lots of activities and events for you to go to (online) to get more familiar with mediation and those of us who practise it. Why have a week? Well, we probably don’t need it this year given the ‘Adele’ effect. There has been a marked increase in mediation cases and queries following Adele’s disclosure that she sorted things out

with her husband, following their separation, using mediation. She’s a clever and talented woman in all sorts of ways but especially because she chose mediation and avoided the usual routes people take which mostly make things worse. If you want to see more information about Family Mediation Week 2022, go to www.familymediationcouncil.org.uk/fmw/

Adele’s albums are available from Spotify and actually on vinyl too.

Please call to discuss what might be the best process for you on 07780676212 or email jo@osullivanfamilylaw.com For more details about how I work visit www.osullivanfamilylaw.com

What’s been happ It’s been a very busy winter season for the Town Council, with the return of our most popular Lewesian events after a rather empty 2020 diary. Bonfire breakfast Nothing, of course, is bigger than Bonfire, and the Bonfire Societies made their thoughts on the past two years known in tableau form when Bonfire finally returned on Friday November 5th. The Mayor, Cllr Stephen Catlin, and Town Councillors hosted a thank-you breakfast at the Town Hall on Saturday November 6th for the clean-up team who worked during the night to clear up the detritus from the Bonfire celebrations. The Mayor commented “The tradition of rewarding the street-cleaners may not be as old as Bonfire, but I thought it worth continuing to reward the hard-working team, who start their night’s work while many of us are trudging home.” Remembrance returns

pening at the Town Council? It was an honour to once again take part in the Armistice Day service at 11am on Thursday November 11th and Remembrance Day commemorations on Sunday November 14th. The Mayor, Mayoress, Town Clerk and councillors took part in the annual Remembrance Day parade, with a fantastic public turnout. The Mayor also visited Brighton Station, as part of Govia Thameslink Railway’s “Routes of Remembrance” event.

It was a record year, with over £500 made for the Mayor’s good causes, and we were delighted to see huge numbers of residents supporting local businesses, the only downside was that the refreshments sold out before the event ended! The Mayor was delighted to judge the Best Dressed Window award, this year won by No 1 Lewes.

Late Night Shopping

Victoria Gray has started at Lewes Town Council as Communications Officer, and was warmly welcomed by Councillors at the latest Council meeting.

The Christmas season got off to a bumper start with the return of Lewes Late Night Shopping on December 2nd. The Council Officers - kitted out in festive sparkles - served mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies to shoppers in the Town Hall foyer.

Finally, meet our new Communications Officer!

“I’m so thrilled to have had such a warm welcome. I’m relatively new to Lewes, and working for the Town Council has given me a crash-course in everything past and present that makes Lewes unique. I can’t wait to tell the upcoming stories of the Town Council and its work for the wonderful community of Lewes” she said. Victoria is also a mature student at the University of Sussex, studying for an MA in Literature, Culture and Theory. Previously, she was a freelance journalist and marketeer, working for local and national publications, as well as tech start-ups. She is busily getting to work updating the Town Council’s website and social media profiles – watch this space for upcoming campaigns around the Town Council’s work. Shirley-Anne Sains

Town Councillor, Lewes Castle Ward I came to Lewes in 1967 after obtaining a position in the then Borough Treasurers Dept. in the Council Offices in Fisher Street. I later worked in the Lewes Boys Club as secretary and then spent 13 years at the University of Sussex Security Dept. as a Co-ordinator, which again involved young people. In 2019 a Lib Dem politician’s enthusiasm and drive inspired me to stand for election in Castle ward, where I live. I was lucky enough to win a seat and was enthusiastic, determined that I could make a difference. My hopes for Lewes include cleaner air, a better traffic system, more recreational facilities, care of our elderly, homes affordable for all and the protection of the unique heritage which we enjoy in this town.

In October 2021 I woke with a massively painful headache. 10 Considering a dry January? – John Kay at Lewes History Group has a cautionary tale:

Brewer Drowns in His Own Beer In the first week of February 1863 the Sussex Express, and other newspapers across the nation, carried reports of the death of William Gresham Wiles, a brewer at the firm of Gresham Wiles & Brown in Malling Street, Lewes, who had been found drowned in a tun of beer on the previous Friday afternoon. He had been talking to some of his men and had then gone upstairs to skim the beer. It was conjectured that he had fallen into the tun while doing so, age 29. The inquest, held the same afternoon, concluded that he had perhaps been overcome by carbon dioxide. The 1861 census finds William G. Wiles, a brewer, wine and spirit merchant employing three men and three boys, at the Cliffe Brewery in South Malling parish. Entered from North Street, it was immediately before the Tanners Arms. William was 26 and from St Neots, Huntingdonshire. His household comprised his young wife, widowed mother (described as a ‘proprietor of houses’) and a teenage servant. The 1841 census has them in Lambeth and the 1851 census in Holborn. In 1851 his father was a ‘proprietor of houses’ and William Gresham a scholar aged 17. When he married in St Marylebone in 1855 he, his father and his father-in-law were all described as gentlemen. Leslie Davey’s book ‘The Inns of Lewes, Past and Present’ identifies the Tanners Arms (named after Baxter’s tannery across the road and later called the Brewery Tap) as at no.135 Malling Street, between the Wheatsheaf at no.123 and the Prince of Wales at no.163. This identifies his brewery as one later called the South

Image from the John Kay collection

Malling Brewery on Malling Street. By 1867 Alexander Elmsley, brewer, maltster, wine & spirit merchant, and agent for Bass’s and Allsopp’s pale ales and Guinness’s stout, was proprietor. The 9 April 1904 Sussex Express noted that the freehold property known as the South Malling Brewery, with a 66-foot frontage to Malling Street and an overall area of 1,165 square feet, was to be sold by auction on Tuesday 19 April 1904. The Edwardian postcard below shows it bearing the sign of the ‘County Town Mineral Water Works’. So, for those of you giving up the booze and turning instead to mineral water this January, to save yourselves a sticky fate, you have a historical precedent! A big thank you to John Kay at Lewes History Group (www.leweshistory.org.uk) for this interesting insight.

Street Life I stood at the bottom of Keere Street, eg the wrong end. I really hate walking uphill. Why I live in Lewes rather than, say, the Netherlands, I do not know. I was mentally compiling the top ten worst hills in Lewes (for a future exciting column) when a familiar figure whizzed past me on a bicycle.

‘Hey,’ Cycle Girl said, nodding affably as she began her ascent. I nodded back, smiling to myself. I’ve seen plenty of cyclists and runners start out on Keere Street all ‘hey’ and breezy, but a few yards up and they’re cursing every decision that led to this point. I began wobbling slowly up the hill assuming I’d be able to catch CG up when the inevitable happened and she fell off her bike. But… hang on a doggone minute! She was still cycling up the vertical incline, as easily as if on an Amsterdam straat. When she got halfway with no sign of flagging, I could stand it no longer. I rang her phone, watching as she dismounted to answer. ‘Look here,’ I barked, ‘Just how fit are you?’ ‘Medium to good.’ She turned and waved. ‘I’ll wait, shall I?’

By the time I’d toiled, sweating and cursing, to join her at base camp, my furious brain had worked it out. ‘Electric bike, huh?’ ‘Christmas present. Like it?’ I examined the understated design, with its sleek white lines. Then I looked at how much more hill there was left to climb. ‘Come on,’ she said, ‘I’ll give you a croggy.’ ‘Beg pardon?’ She helped me onto the crossbar, then whizzed me up that mountain in a hot minute. It was amazing, but I’ll not be getting an electric bike myself. I wouldn’t know who I was if I couldn’t moan about walking uphill. Hilltop Sessions

Upstairs at The Royal Oak Hilltop Sessions are monthly live gigs upstairs at The Royal Oak, Lewes, featuring a range of independent artists performing original material. A typical session will usually involve a headline artist with at least one album under their belt and one support artist who may not have recorded anything yet, but has already written some cracking songs and is ready to share them with a wider audience. It is arranged by local artist and musician Maia Eden and her husband Oliver Dudok Van Heel. Maia and Oliver met four years ago, at a street party in Fitzjohns Road, Lewes, where they were both performing. After bumping into each other again briefly, at ‘Starfish in the Park’ a week later, they made a very tentative arrangement to meet up and play music together. Several weeks later they had a (doomed) song-writing session but bonded over their love of music - even though they have very different tastes and later went on to acknowledge this by hosting their own radio show on Rocket FM called ‘Musical Differences’ - It ended well and they tied the knot in September 2019. Missing going to gigs (and the pub) during the pandemic and wanting to support musicians, the idea to organise their own event evolved deep in the mid-winter lockdown of 2020. The sessions have hosted a wide range of artists, from established stars like Chris Difford and Ben Ottewell, to those making serious inroads in the business, like Glastonbury Emerging Talent winner Marie White or Lewes alt-folk master Sennen Timcke.

The next Hilltop Session on February 3rd will feature Danny George Wilson, known by many Lewesians as one half of Union Music Store. Danny will be supported by nu-folk duo Memorial who have just been nominated for a UK Americana Music Award for best song. They are also lucky to have a fantastic sound engineer Phil Bodger, who has worked in the music industry for many years. Hilltop Sessions take place upstairs at the Royal Oak (which is a hidden gem of a room) in Lewes, on the first Thursday of every month. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased at hilltopsessions.co.uk Gift Vouchers are now available in £10 denominations. LEAP entrepreneurs Win £2,500 cash to help get your business idea started! “Have you got a business idea you’d like to turn into a reality?” Statistics show approx. 660,000 new startups register in the UK every year; sadly 80% of businesses fail in year one. That’s why the LEAP programme has been so valuable for so many business people in the Lewes District. This free, comprehensive business start-up programme provides workshops, seminars, 1-2-1 mentoring and a chance of winning a cash prize of £2,500. Since 2013, by participating in the LEAP start-up programme, residents have been supported to turn their business dreams into reality and have included massage therapists, haberdasheries, gardeners, artists, social media gurus and health and safety consultants, to name a few. A former LEAP candidate Anthony Freeman had a successful 30-year career as a designer/art director/graphic designer in the advertising industry in the Middle East and South Africa. During that time, he developed an interest in art as a hobby and won awards as an amateur artist. On his return to the UK, he decided to explore the possibility of developing his artistic skills, rather than his graphic design/advertising skills, into the basis of a successful business. The LEAP programme enabled him to formulate a strong business plan which got him through to the Dragons Den stage of the programme. Christina Ewbank, the Chief Exec of Edeal Enterprise Agency said: “Whenever you start a new business, always choose to do something you love. Anthony did just that and went on to create his successful business, Art Contemporary.” A former LEAP winner Tracey Horan has a background in textiles and has always

loved the mannequin form. As a result of this she set up Dolly Fixtures which offers a range of quirky home furniture and accessories. The mannequins are covered with decoupage fabrics and/or textiles, then depending on their function, wired up as lamps or finished with polished wooden, glass, steel or other metal tops. The material for the base varies, dependent on the top. They are internally adapted to be stable and if necessary, waterproofed to withstand spills and weathering. Winning LEAP and the £2500 grant enabled Tracey to invest in some stateof-the-art machinery to help her create a high-quality finish for her mannequins. If you live in the Lewes district and are thinking of starting a new business, register for LEAP now by visiting www.yourleap.co.uk or contact Edeal on 01323 641144

‘When the living are lost the dead get creative’ I met up with Philip Ayckbourn in Café Nero where he writes for 3 or 4 hours every morning, drinks too much coffee, sees the regulars and tries not to chat too much. He is currently working on a musical about Vincent Van Gogh, writing the music as well as the script- a retrospective of his life starting on his deathbed, with a dark chorus, with an uplifting end. Philip plays guitar and keyboard, and Carl at Lewes Operatic is helping to arrange and notate the music. It started as a lockdown project and he did a demo acting all the parts and singing all the characters. Recently, though, he has found singers online using Air gigs- you can listen to voice reels, send them your track and feeling the audience and getting them on they record it for you, all over the world. his side. Philip moved to Lewes six years ago from Philip has premiered three plays at Lewes London where he spent most of his life, Little Theatre. Here he waives his fee and he is originally from Leeds, but was sent directs the play himself. He says a lot of it is a haze now, a bunch of actors and red wine piled in a van in the south of France, for 4 months, every winter.

The daughter gets pulled in and starts talking to her mum. Realisations are made and relationships healed.

He does not miss the acting because writing is his passion but when he is writing he plays all the characters in his head, he also does voice overs for some characters and definitely has an actor within him,

The play will work well in our covid times as it is short –75 minutes with no interval. There are only 3 characters on stage and they are naturally socially distanced because nobody gets on!

The other characters are filmed or recorded. And Philip is a dab hand at technology, linking laptops up to project them onto the back wall of the stage. Off stage Philip makes money with bitcoin – it’s high risk, he says, but the rewards are good. This sets him free to write what he likes. He says “I like the supernatural, it works well in theatre, playing with the suspension of disbelief”. He hasn’t been to see a medium himself but a woman grabbed him in a shop in France and told him the person he was with he wouldn’t be with much longer, which was unfortunately true. Philip is happy in Lewes, and his future plan is to create a performance, workshop and healing space. He says “Theatre is healing, If you go to the right play, you follow characters through a journey and resolution, taking them to a better place.” Getting Through To Harry, by Philip Ayckbourn will be at Lewes Little Theatre from 29th January - 5th February

Lewes Climate Hub When it comes to climate change there is room for everyone to contribute, but not necessarily A room. Lewes Climate Hub opened in May this year in a part of the building behind the Tourist Information Centre, however a leak and bad weather caused the ceiling to collapse. During COP26 Depot hosted them for a fortnight of events but now they are homeless and looking for somewhere to relocate to on a temporary or permanent basis. Ideally somewhere central with good footfall and very low rent as they are a Community Interest Company and reliant on fundraising.

Lewes Climate Hub is a not-for-profit alliance of community groups in and around Lewes in East Sussex, taking action on climate change and ecological breakdown. They provide a welcoming place staffed by volunteers where anyone-individuals, families, local business or interest groups- can learn about the environmental challenges we all face, and what actions we can take to address them. Local community groups that would like to be an affiliate of Lewes Climate Hub, may contact them at info@lewesclimatehub.org

IF ANYONE CAN HELP THAT WOULD BE GREAT!

Energy Bill Health Checks Ovesco and Lewes Climate Hub will be offering Energy Bill Health Checks at a weekly drop in clinic at Southover House. The sessions will run from 10am - 1pm and are open to all. Lewes residents are encouraged to attend and bring their latest gas and electricity bills. Ovesco’s Energy Champions and Climate Hub volunteers will be on hand to help consumers to understand their bills and see whether there are additional ways householders can save further money and energy.

Green United Young people from Lewes premiered four films at a Depot-sponsored event called Green on Screen at the start of their COP26 Climate Action! Festival. The short films made by young people from five local schools were about Palm Oil, Animal Poaching, Ocean Pollution and Bees. The young people spoke of their passion and hope for the future and thanked Depot for providing the creative filmmaking workshops. Filmmaker Evie Harris, said “I am so grateful to be given this opportunity and these skills I will keep for life.” Green United works with pupils in primary and secondary schools in Lewes encour-

aging organisations and individuals to give their time, talent (skills) or treasure (financial donations) to help address specific environmental concerns identified by young people at a very local level. A Youth Board decides how best to allocate funds that are raised for projects and initiatives suggested by young people. Green on Screen was the first completed project. Seven more are under way and can be found at www.greenunited.org.uk

Ruth’s Column Friends of Lewes Tree Group / Urban Arboretum with thanks to Audrey Jarvis Lewes needs more trees! In 2019 Friends of Lewes completed a survey that suggests Lewes has only 11.5% tree canopy cover, compared to the 20% minimum recommendation for urban environments. This means that we must both plan for further tree planting and maintain the health of our existing trees. Trees improve our air quality. As they grow, they store more carbon. Our current stock already stores the equivalent of the annual carbon emissions for 10,100 cars and 4,140 homes. Surface water run-off and flooding, and the resulting pollution of our streams, rivers and wetlands, is a problem in several areas of Lewes. Trees and shrubs reduce water run-off, and their root systems store water. Our existing trees intercept enough water to fill Pells Pool more than 12 times! The Trees Committee of Friends of Lewes manage the “Lewes Urban Arboretum Project”, consulting with residents and landowners across Lewes to identify places to plant new trees or replace existing ones. Twice a year they visit each tree site to weed, mulch and prune. Since 2014, they have planted 112 street trees and 1,200 hedge whips in public open spaces and on grassy verges. If you have an idea for where more could be planted, please contact arboretum@friends-of-lewes.org. They would also like to hear from anyone who has a piece of land that they could use to develop woodland and/or hedging. Gardens can contribute a great deal to our treescape and to an increase in biodiversity too. Do contact them for advice if you have room for more trees or hedges.

Audrey Jarvis You can find out more about Lewes Urban Arboretum on facebook or twitter, or by looking at the Friends of Lewes website.

are designed to enable students to see how a diagnosis of dementia can affect people and the challenges and changes that they may face over time. Families will be visited by Alzheimer’s Society, and students receive supporting lectures and tutorials. Time for Dementia is a core component of the curriculum at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and University of Brighton. So far, more than 1,600 families and 4,200 students have taken part in the programme.

Evaluation of the programme has shown huge improvements in students’ knowledge and attitude towards dementia. Additionally, students report that their confidence and skills in communicating with people with dementia has improved; and that they have more awareness of the role of carers.

One Step Greener Kate Chappell I have bought an electric cargo bike to ferry my kids around Lewes. It’s an enormous, unwieldy beauty. I love flying about in it with my kids in front of me pretending they’re riding a horse-drawn cart. What I don’t love is the hills. I wish the electric assist had a bit more welly. It’s slow and unglamorous. My top tip is to opt for a battery of more than 365 watts. They are expensive things, there is no doubt about it. But if you happen to be weighing up whether to get a second car, it is worth considering. I got lucky and found mine secondhand on Facebook marketplace, but Get Bikery, a new e-cargo bike loan scheme, will be launching in Lewes next month so you can try before you buy. Mine is so big I can fit a weekly shop, three kids and a dog in it. This is brilliant in almost every way except that I can no longer squeeze past the other cars at traffic lights as I could on my normal bike. Hay Fever

Lewesian Rating

by Ringmer Dramatic Society There’s not much bliss in the Bliss household. Both parents and both children seem determined to stoke the fire of familial discontent at every opportunity, and yet somehow, bizarrely, it’s this very discord that seems to hold them together. Over the course of a farcical (but, we suspect, not unusual) night where each family member has invited a guest without telling the others, Noel Coward’s classic comedy of manners explores the ruptures beneath the surface of social etiquette. This being am dram, and the first night of the first show since pre-lockdown, I’ll readily forgive the occasional forgotten line, muffled dialogue and speech delivered from an unlit part of the stage. Especially since, thankfully, at least half of the cast of nine seem to know exactly what they’re doing and have a solid grip of comic timing (out of these, the absolute stand-out performance comes from Emily Feist as Sorel Bliss, with her on-stage brother Mike O’Rourke a close second). It takes a little while to get going. Part of the problem may lie in the writing. Act 1 is rather predictable, the way successive characters are introduced, and very few laughs land. Act 2, in stark contrast, is

an absolute scream; the ‘adverbs’ parlour game, where the characters begin to show their true colours, is brilliantly performed and directed, and this higher quality almost carries us through Act 3. By complete coincidence, Lewes Little Theatre are staging the same play in May 2022. Next up for Ringmer Dramatic Society is ‘Murder Mistaken’ in March. Reviewed by JOHN HINTON. WOOD BURNING IS A LEADING CAUSE OF AIR POLLUTION IN THE UK

Burning wood can look beautiful and feel cosy, but the science is clear - if you can smell smoke, tiny particles of soot are gradually harming both your and your neighbours’ health.

DO YOU REALLY NEED TO BURN WOOD?

Can you minimise the number of times a year you use your stove or fire? If you have central heating, do you need to burn wood at all?

THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU BUY A FIRE PIT OR STOVE

Burning wood in fire pits and stoves can cause your family, neighbours and friends serious health issues.

IF YOU MUST BURN, BURN WITH CARE

Even the newest Ecodesign stoves emit high levels of harmful pollution. If you must burn, ensure your wood is dry and your chimney is swept to reduce dangerous soot. Never burn treated or painted wood or any other kind of waste as these can release highly dangerous toxins like chromium and arsenic.

Seedy Saturday Started in 2007, Seedy Saturday Lewes is a yearly event held on the first Saturday in February.

At the heart of this popular and much anticipated local event is the Seed Swap where people come and exchange seeds they have saved or spares they have bought. Originally held at Southover Grange it now takes place in the weatherproof Lewes Town Hall. It is an exciting opportunity to meet people who are interested in gardening, local food production and sustainability. To quote Marina Pepper, a founder of Seedy Saturday “Local food is best and home grown food is best of all”.

A wonderful cafe run by Hamsey PTA will be serving tea, coffee and delicious home-made cakes and Chloe Edwards of Seven Sisters Spices will be offering soup and tasty savoury snacks. We are very fortunate to have Dave Goulson to talk on “Gardening for bumblebees”. Tree of the Month Holm Oak In January and throughout the winter months the skeletal branching systems of trees are silhouetted against the winter sky carrying, in yet unopened buds, the promise of spring and summer months to come. There are of course exceptions to this where leaves are retained throughout winter providing a reminder of the absent green canopies. Excluding conifers perhaps the finest of trees which remain green is the Holm Oak (Quercus ilex). In Lewes there is a splendid specimen, estimated to be over 300 years old, whose canopy extends across Southover High Street opposite Trinity Church. Situated in a private garden the trunk, which is well over a metre in diameter, is not visible, hidden behind the boundary wall of the property but the canopy is magnificent and can be seen from any point on the High Street. Holm Oak has been cultivated in England since the sixteenth century and is a native of the Mediterranean region where it can be seen flourishing in a forest environment. With a preference for warm, light soil Holm Oak is perfectly happy on the coast and is often seen as tortured and ravaged specimens thriving in coastal conditions where other trees cannot survive. The habit of young trees is diverse with many having a distinctly pendulous habit while others remain rigidly pyramidal. Holm Oak can also be clipped and trained annually and retained as a hedge or small tree. Happily the Southover High Street tree has been left to grow, the crown is magnificently domed and elegantly spread, and is open to view to all who care to look and enjoy. The description of Holm Oak as an evergreen is slightly misleading as the leaves of the previous year are shed in May and June and litter the ground, as walkers us-

ing the High Street will be able to testify. Acorns are produced in abundance in warm dry years and remain the principal means of propagation. The tree currently stores a massive 7500kg of carbon and sequesters 15kg of carbon each year. A valuable and significant contribution at a time when the value of trees to the environment has never been more focused, with tree planting initiatives being generated by government at both national and local level. This tree has a value of approximately £15,000, should it have to be replaced. Irrespective of the environmental benefits provided by the Southover Holm Oak it is a truly magnificent specimen, and it is worth diverting a walk through the town to take in and admire the aesthetic contribution this tree makes to its local environment. Remembering the Holocaust The date 27 January 1945 saw the liberation of Auschwitz, as the Russian army swept through Poland and saw evidence of atrocities on a massive scale. Now, the date is commemorated every year as Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). The Lewes HMD Group, made up of a small group of dedicated local volunteers, has for the past seven years marked the day with a range of events. ‘It’s been hugely moving how much support we’ve had’ says the group’s Chair, Tim Locke. ‘The public have turned up in amazing numbers, the town council and district council have contributed in various forms, and Depot cinema has screened Holocaust-related films.’

‘It’s been hugely moving how much support we’ve had’ says the group’s Chair, Tim Locke. The programme this year spreads across most of a week and focuses on the national HMD theme ‘One Day’. Apart from the films at Depot, all the events are free of charge. On HMD itself (27 January) we invite the public to bring a lantern and assemble on Cliffe Bridge. It’s a time for contemplation, and there’ll be some readings and short speeches reflecting on the Holocaust and other genocides. We’ll do it whatever the weather. Then on 29 January the Mayor will introduce an evening of talks at 7.30pm at Trinity St John sub Castro church. Lewes resident Jackie Stimpson will then talk about how her family fled from the Armenian genocide to a new life in France, while I’ll be speaking about my mother’s family fate during the dreadful events on Kristallnacht in Germany in November 1938. No booking is needed. Writer and workshop convenor Christine Cohen Park will be running a discus-

sion event (29 January, free but booking required) at Depot cinema’s studio, to consider the ‘One Day’ theme in the light of oppression. Depot cinema will show Final Account (25 January), a stunning documentary by the late Luke Holland, a film-maker from Ditchling featuring interviews with the last generation of everyday people who lived through the Third Reich. Also at the cinema are two screenings of Leopoldstadt, Tom Stoppard’s highly acclaimed play about Austrian-Jewish families (27 and 30 January). The events finish with an hour of music, poetry and at Depot cinema’s studio, with Adrienne Thomas and others. For full details see www.hmd-lewes.org, or pick up a brochure from Lewes Tourist Information Centre. Tim Locke
