The answer, was something of real value that truly makes a difference and is ultimately more satisfying. This led to social care and Right at Home in particular as a premium provider of quality domiciliary care. From the very first contact I was impressed with the honesty and sincerity of the organisation and was delighted to be selected for the lengthy and challenging validation process, and of course even happier to partner with Right at Home and be working in care.

I also began to realise that my route to care had been signposted earlier in my life. I was hospitalised as the result of a motorcycle accident in 1983 and even then I understood the vulnerable position I was in. Then Nicola my partner, broke her leg severely in a skiing accident in 2004. Fortunately, I was with her when it happened and visited her everyday whilst she was in hospital awaiting repatriation. Following Nicola’s initial time in hospital I effectively became her carer as well holding down a senior commercial role. I learnt a lot about the client / patient experience the workings of health and social care and knew things could and should be so much better. It also revealed a caring side to me that I hadn’t previously seen but I went back to the ‘day-job’.

Many years later my Father was diagnosed with Dementia and I quickly learnt of the care needs of that awful disease and the impact on the whole family. His condition deteriorated rapidly, the health and social care system did work well, and I learnt how

to deal with Dementia and the specific needs of senior care until his passing in November 2014. In particular I learnt the need to navigate through social care and benefits, skills which I now utilise in advocacy for our clients. Later and with an obvious personal perspective, I was fortunate to work as a corporate sponsor of The Alzheimer’s Society which included dementia awareness training and me becoming a Dementia Friend.

Your chimney Your chimney creates a ‘look’ for your home. It adds architectural design and character to your home. However, practically their true purpose is to carry dangerous flue gases from your fireplace, wood stove or furnace safely out of your home.

If your chimney is incorrect for your home, badly fitted, or damaged then this can have significant consequences. Chimney fires can burn explosively. Flames or dense smoke may shoot from the top of the chimney. However, those are only the chimney fires you know about.

Key checks are: • Flashing. Is it in good condition?

Weather conditions can significantly affect the metal component of the chimney. A rust hole in the flashing can lead to the flashing not adequately keeping water out resulting in your roof having serious

water damage, including structural damage.

• Mortar. If the mortar around the chimney deteriorates then moisture can get in and cause damage.

• Loose or cracked bricks.

This can also let moisture can get in and cause damage.

• Leaning chimneys. These will need to be rebuilt.

• Cracked chimney crowns. These require repair to prevent moisture from damaging your masonry and flue lining.

• Chimney cap. Check it is fitted correctly and if you do not have one then we recommend you get one installed. They help prevent moisture, keep birds and other creepy crawlies from coming down the chimney and they act as guard that protects against flying embers.

Your flue Your flue is the internal lining of the chimney. If it is incorrect for your home, badly fitted, damaged or dirty then this can have significant consequences.

Even the smallest crack in the flue will expose your home to an increased risk of a chimney fire which can lead to a house fire.

Together Against Cancer (TAC) works differently from most other healthcare charities. Based at Troon Way Business Centre in Leicester, their Education and Wellness Centre provides free support to cancer patients and their carers by offering complementary therapies, one to one guidance, nutritional advice, counselling, support groups, coaching, healing sessions and lots of wellbeing workshops.

With 1 in 2 people predicted to experience some type of cancer, this is something that affects us all.

This means that people need the support that charities such as TAC offer, more now than ever before.

Did you know that around 38% of cancers are preventable? Simple lifestyle changes such as eating healthy, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol intake, losing excess weight and becoming more active will stack the odds in your favour. Stress and poor diet are the two biggest factors of a poorly functioning immune system.

TAC’s main aim is to increase awareness of nutrition and wellbeing through a range of programmes including weekly workshops such as Nutritional Healing, Gut Health and Stress-Less. Stephen, who also runs the workshops is a trained Naturopathic Nutritional therapist and provides one-to-one nutritional coaching to clients and carers at the Centre or over the phone. Melanie, as well as running the operations side of the Centre, is the in-house plant-based Chef who facilitates the healthy eating workshops and provides healthy organic vegan lunches at workshops and events. Whilst the Centre is based in Leicester, the services provided extend across the UK through the charity’s online support.

Without funding from our amazing fundraisers and help from our inspirational volunteers, we would not be able to support people with cancer who urgently need our services.
