CHANELH:MymiddlenameisfromStarTrek. Myfather wasabigTrekkieandhegavemeaname"Veja"whichis derivedfromthenameofthestarship,"V-ger,"fromthe first Star Trek movie. The real name of the ship was "Voyager"butsomeoftheletterswereburnedawayby thetimeitwasdiscovered.

CHANELH:IamstudyingtheatrehereatLehmanbutI'm alsoonapre-occupationaltherapy.Aftergraduation,I'll begoingtogradschoolforoccupationaltherapy.It'san awesomefieldwhereI'llgettohelppeopleandit'llhelp alsogivemetheflexibilityIneedtobeabletoworkon themanyfilmandtheatreprojectsIanticipatestarring in.

LS:HOWWASYOUREXPERIENCEWORKINGONTHE AMENCORNER?

CHANEL H: It's been both fun and challenging. I love working with my castmates, but the role itself is very demanding.Margaretspeaksalot,sothatmeansthere arealotoflinestoremember.Further,atacertainpoint sheisexperiencinganunravelling.Thismeansalogof herspeechisdisconnected;herthoughtsjumpfomone topic to another. As an actor, I had to try to find the threadthatlinkedthoseideastogethersoIcouldrecall herlinesaccurately.It'sahardthingtodobut Ithink doing this play helped me to hone that skill - and I'm gratefulforit.

LS:WHAT'STHEMOSTVALUABLELESSONTHATYOU HAVELEARNEDFROMYOURCHARACTER,MARGARET?

CHANELH:IthinkpeopleseeMargaretasastrongBlack woman only , but what I see is a dedicated, compassionate, and tender person who is not often given the opportunity to be vulnerable or to make a mistake. The knowledge I want the audience to come away with is that Black women are full human beings withflaws,greatweaknesses,andstrengths-&weare justasdeservingofcare,protection,comfortandlove asanyoneelse.AndforthosewhorelatetoMargaret,I wantthemtoknow:Isee,honor,andappreciateyou.

SAMA: My experience working on Amen Corner as an AssitantDirectorwaschallenginginthebeginning,but thenIlearnedmorethroughtheprocessanddevlopeda bondingrelationshipwiththeactorsandthecrew.That helpedmytechniquealittlebetter,andsinceitwasthe firsttimesteppingintothe'director'sshoes,'itfeltlikeI waslivinginanalternateuniverseoftheatre.

LS:WHOHASINSPIREDYOUMOST"DIRECTINGWISE?"

SAMA:ManyhistoricaltheatredirectorsthatIstudied during the process, such as Avery Brooks and Duane Jones.

LS:WHAT'STHEMOSTVALUBALELESSONTHATTHE CASTHASTAUGHTYOU?

SAM A: The most valuable lesson that the cast has taught me from a director's perspective was to be constantinlearninganddevlopingintotheircharacters.

SAMA: My post-graduation plans are to participate in manytheatreandfilmprojectsacrossNewYork.Ialso plantonetworkandmakeconnectionswithotherartists intheperformingartsfield.

SAM A: The most valuable thing I learned was to be protectiveandtotreatyourartlikeanewbornchild.You will see it develop over the months and years and will alsobeabletowitnessprogressandaccomplishments. Another valuable thing I learned is to do what scares youandkeepgoing.

NADIAS:Iwouldsay,ifyouaregoingtoauditiontobein aplay,makesurethatyoustudythescriptandthatyou analyzethehistoryoftheplayandthecharacters Ifyou are auditioning for a musical, make sure you do vocal warm-ups and make sure you choose a song (for auditions) that you have a connection to and feel comfortablesinging.

NADIAS:Ireallyhopethatwhentheaudiencehearsthe churchsongsthatwesingintheplay,theywillfeelmore connectedtoGod.Ialsohopethattheywillunderstand thatnobodyisperfectandthateveryone'swalkwithGod isdifferentandknowjusthowmuchGodloveseachand everyoneofusandthatwemustportraythatsamelove ontoothers.
