A member’s impact.. from Rob Clark
According to Frank, they thought they were too good for the old single fellow, so they hesitated to play with him. Well after the gentleman insisted on joining them, he went on to hit every fairway and every green while the two boys were found looking for their balls in the bushes all day. Golf has its way of teaching us wonderful life lessons. When asking them about those lessons the words respect, honesty and integrity came to mind. Golf has a way of finding the best in all of us.

I asked them about golf and travel and that brought up many memories. Frank and Joyce and Phil and Betty went to the Masters together for over 30 years. Phil talked about how he and Frank loved to be there with the players and how accessible they were back in the day. What I found amusing was how the girls didn’t really care that Arnold Palmer or Jack Nichlaus was standing right next to them, all they cared about was what clothes they had on and how the latest fashion in golf was really cool. They talked about going out to dinner and seeing the players at dinner and how they would be gracious and talk to them. Through the years they have been on countless golf trips, Callaway Gardens, the beach and many other places but their favorite trip was when they won a package to go play golf with John Daly at his home course in Arkansas. Most of us remember John Daly coming on to the scene when he won the PGA Championship as an alternate. He also won the Open Championship at The Old Course at St. Andrews in historical fashion some years later. John is a character and ran hard. He also was a part-owner in a company called Loudmouth Apparel. When John realized the group that won the trip to play golf with him was from Alabama, he immediately sent them all pairs of houndstooth shorts to wear for their round of golf. When Frank and Phil received the box with the note to wear these when they played golf together, they almost cancelled the trip. There was no way these guys from Auburn were going to be seen in black and white houndstooth. As you can see by the picture, John sent them replacements, John either didn’t get the message or was just being John. When they arrived at John’s
house on the day of the golf round, they saw an RV parked in the driveway. When they got out of the car, John walked out of the RV and made the comment, he had been home for two weeks and had yet to go into his house. He had been living in his RV. John played the round with them, and they had a great time and loved the fact they got the opportunity to play with him, but they were glad to get home. Phil and Frank said John was very pleasant to play with.
Both Phil and Frank have been members of the Ledges for many years. They have been playing in the Poole Group for most of those years. The Poole Group formed by passed member Bill Poole. It is an open group of golfers who have great fellowship and respect for the game. It is another reminder of how this game can have a far greater impact on our lives than just golf. Several years ago, Seventeen years ago, the Bentleys established the Frank Crim Compassion Fund to honor their friend through the Huntsville Hospital Foundation. Frank wanting to make good use of that money decided to form a golf event that would benefit families of children who have been diagnosed with cancer. St. Jude covers all expenses for the child’s treatment. Frank’s Charity raises funds for the families.
A member’s impact.. from Rob Clark
Frequently, one of the parents has to quit their job to take care of the child. These families sometimes incur unthinkable expenses related to cancer. His golf tournament has paid for utility bills, mortgage payments, scholarships for college, food cards and many other things during months of treatment that sometimes get missed when a family has a child diagnosed with cancer. To this day Frank and his “Swing to Support Families with Childhood Cancer”” event has been going on the day after Father’s Day for 17 years. This Father Child event has had many of our own members participate and, on several occasions, has had three generations of families playing in the event. Frank is proud of is that after 17 years of this event they have been able to raise nearly $1,000,000.00 and 100% of these monies go to people here in North Alabama.
When asked how many holes in ones they have had I was shocked to hear one for Phil at The Ledges and two for Frank. Well kind of two! He was playing Cherokee Ridge years ago by himself when he approached the 8th a narrow par three with a large slope to the left. Frank hit his shot hard left, his ball hit a tree, a fence and the cart path and then down the slope, on to the green and into the hole. He was shocked and excited, but no one was there to witness it. That’s usually when the crazy stuff happens. Franks low score is a 71 and Phil’s is mid 70’s.
Golf means so many things to so many people. It’s my livelihood, for these two gentlemen it has been a life-long friendship filled with great memories, lessons learned and a gift back to the area that has meant so much in their lives. The Ledges is a special place, yes, we have a great golf course and beautiful facilities, but it’s our membership that makes this place special. I’m so proud of this place and these members!!!!!
