Giving Back, Starting Early For Kate Culbertson ’13, the occasion of her Fifth Reunion provided the perfect opportunity to make a gift to Lawrenceville. “My experience at Lawrenceville was unforgettable,” Culbertson says. “Looking back, I made friendships that I will have for life.” Citing the School’s House System and Harkness teaching as examples, she adds, “It is important to keep up the traditions of Lawrenceville. Those are some of the things I cherished most. In small classes taught by incredible professors, I learned more in those four years than I have in the rest of my years combined. I’m someone who doesn’t like to participate, and I was encouraged to have more of a voice while at Lawrenceville.” Culbertson also says the close relationships she formed and the many meaningful conversations she had at Lawrenceville informed her interest in pursuing a graduate degree in social work. She recently moved to Austin, Texas, where she is working at a nonprofit and volunteering at a mental health facility. In addition to helping her stay connected to the School, giving back is part of a family tradition for Kate. Her sister, Kirby, graduated in 2006; their late father, John, was Class of 1970; and the family has provided major support for the School’s Capstone Program, student scholarships, and The Lawrenceville Fund. Kirby Arts Center is named for Kate’s great-grandfather Allan P. Kirby, Class of 1913. “Lawrenceville had a special place in my dad’s heart, and I know he wanted us to carry on giving back to the School,” she says. “It’s important to me to maintain a relationship with the School, and one way of doing that is through giving back.”
