The Lawrenceville

Around the Harkness table

At Lawrenceville, Harkness doesn’t happen just around the table. Our students roll up their sleeves, ask questions, collaborate, and solve problems. The intellectual inquiry cultivated in our Harkness classrooms manifests in molecular biology research in partnership with a lab at Stanford University, rocketry projects in the Gruss Center for Art and Design, and construction of a life-size canoe during an interdisciplinary study of Boat Building and Botany.

The Hutchins Institute for Social Justice is an academic hub advancing social justice through scholarship, programming, and experiential learning.

Lawrenceville’s Harkness Travel Program aims to promote the development of responsible leadership, global citizenship, selfawareness, and interdisciplinary knowledge in our student travelers. Whether through service, scientific research, cultural exchange, artistic performance, historical inquiry, or engagement with the natural world, Harkness Travel offers students the opportunity to develop their personal and global awareness.

When your House becomes a home

For generations of Lawrentians, the first question they ask on another is “What House were you in?” Whether it’s painting your face before House Olympics, doubling over with laughter during a Saturday night Feed, or knocking on the door of your Head of House and talking through a problem, at Lawrenceville, your House truly becomes a home. Our community of 18 residential Houses is a place where students form lifelong friendships, develop the values of cooperation, tolerance and leadership, and make memories that last a lifetime.

Teacher. Coach. Mentor.

Our teachers are committed to helping you discover and develop your intellectual passions, to think critically and creatively about the world around you, and to come up with solutions to the challenges and opportunities before you. You’ll find them everywhere - inspiring debate around our Harkness tables, driving creativity in our makerspaces and studios, creating vital community connections in our Houses, and coaching on our athletic fields. Nearly 90 percent of our teachers hold advanced degrees, and many make direct contributions to their disciplines as published scholars, scientific researchers, and leading innovators in education.

In the classroom, in co-curricular activities, and through our residential life program, students have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the perspectives and identities of others, while developing their own. Lawrenceville is committed to inspiring students to live “lives of learning, integrity, and high purpose,” which we believe is enhanced by being in an environment that celebrates difference and is committed to belonging. Lawrenceville encourages students to become global citizens through its emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and belonging in its academic curriculum and community goals.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Arts and Culture

The arts at Lawrenceville seek to inspire and connect. Our lively and comprehensive performing arts department offers musical and dramatic theater, vocal and instrumental music, and dance. Our visual arts program challenges students to develop visual awareness and acuity through classes encompassing historical analysis and creation. We believe the arts are an essential element in broadening students’ approach to problem solving, to aesthetic enjoyment, to other people, and to life itself.

Experiential Learning

At Lawrenceville, you will engage in learning experiences that are designed to deepen your thinking and understanding while building your confidence, creativity, and initiative. We believe in “learning by doing,” whether you are in the science lab, at the farm, on the ropes course, participating in educational travel programs, or designing your own independent study. These are just a few of the many opportunities you will have to apply learning to real-life experiences.

If you can imagine it, you can create it at the Gruss Center for Art and Design (GCAD). Lawrenceville’s makerspace includes a fabrication lab, digital design rooms, and a large flexible project room for ideation and rapid prototyping. Whether building a guitar from scratch, creating an app to help a local nonprofit, or launching a handcrafted rocket, or simply trying something new, GCAD gives you the freedom and support to experiment and grow.

In an effort to further cultivate steadiness in mind and spirit, Lawrenceville also offers an array of restorative activities, including meditation, yoga, and opportunities for spiritual reflection.
