ENGLISH This is an excerpt from a We the News story circle at Hancock Community Backyard Garden Park in Bedstuy, Brooklyn on July 16, 2017.

The story circle explored questions around identity, opportunity, navigating sacrifice and survival in the United States.

Lucia is from St. Lucia, Christine is from Trinidad and Tobago, and Samah was born in Liberia, of Liberian and Sierra Leonean descent.

Below is a conversation between Lucia, Christine, Samah, Lizania Cruz and Albert St. Jean (Interviewers).

LUCIA: Well actually I’m from the Island of Saint Lucia. I’m named after my country, Lucia. To me you know, many times people will feel that you came to the United States because you are poor, or you were sickened, or some sort of prestige. I don’t really know how to explain it. But many of us from the Caribbean, you would not say that you were rich. But at the same time, you were well to do because you were able to live a better life than when you first came up here.

For example, when I was in my country I would say “I win,” because whatever I wanted I would get it.

But coming up here was different.

It was very different because number one, I mean…you will do whatever it takes for your survival. I did about five domestic workers jobs, but we did not find domestic workers jobs. I recalled my Grandmother’s death. Because you know the work was so…I don’t want it because number one, in my country, you won’t…dogs walk themselves. You don’t walk dogs. Now when they tell you to walk dogs and you know that you’re not used to it, it kind of makes you feel bad.

CHRISTINE: Say it.

LUCIA: You know, it...it makes you feel that I am just...because I don’t want to pick up human doo-doo why should I go and walk [a] dog and pick up dog doo-doo? There are many things that I did not agree with but I wanted the pay at least. Because when I began

working I wanted the pay to send things for my children at home and so forth. So then it’s a degrading situation for many of us. But at the same time, if your employer were dealing with you with respect you don’t mind doing it because you want that so call “Green Card” in order to help you. Now, the nice thing about it is that you know your employer. You cook food for them; they may come at night, 11 o’clock, and you’re telling me after you eat I’m going to eat. You know it never agreed with me.

Like okay, I mean in those days, 1992, it was kind of hard. Now your friends, they will ask you to come up here, telling you that things, [are] very good because that’s the land of opportunity.

That’s the land of bread and butter, you know. We see hell in the nation from the very people that ask us to come.

And even…and it’s not with one side.

Because then when my daughters came up here and I had to sleep-in [with] two children, they were suffering, because their mother was not there. Not because, you know, things were not good with them.

Because [whatever] friends I had, they used to take them to the movie[s], take them everywhere. But still it did not suffice [for] them.

So they were always crying. I joined a teacher’s parent conference [and] when I went, the teacher told me that my daughter [was] one of them [that] was always crying and tears [were] running down.

It was within her. The other little ones said that she was sloppy and so forth. Now, I know my children. I know who they are. And I [brought] them up.

It was…you know, I always felt that it was my fault. Because, at home, they did not have to go for that.

I have [a] mother. I have [a] grandmother. They have aunts. They have relatives. They have neighbors.

Because you are…you live in a community. And coming up here, you know, and seeing their pains and sufferings, I could not do this sleep in job again. I had to leave it.

And basically I might have been not working for about three years [and] everybody felt during this time that I was lazy.

You know, I did not want to do that.

I did not want to do this. I did not want to do that, but I think that the children were my responsibility. So then I happened to take pre-school, after-school and thing…you know.

I end[ed] up working there for 15 years.

At the end of 15 years, when the school was closed down, I found out then that they were not paying unemployment or anything.

Yet, you know, at the end of the year, you would get your tax return and so forth. So, it actually put me in the [position where] I could have been a bitter person. I chose, because of my upbringing from my parents, [there are] [s]ome things that you don’t allow to bring you down because you never know what will happen tomorrow.

I could go on and on. They have…there so I [will end here].

SAMAH: If I can respond— Yeah.

SAMAH: I don’t know. I feel like, as someone who—I guess—I Can you say your name first?

SAMAH: Oh. I’m sorry. I’m Samma.

I was born in Liberia. I’m half Liberian, half Sierra Leonean. I think something I’ve been struggling with, [as] I’ve gotten older, is being very Americanized. It’s thinking back to my parents you know, and I felt like— you felt like it was your fault maybe for a lot of things that your kids felt because you weren’t around and stuff.

And I often felt like my parents have struggled and it was my fault in a way.

Does that make sense? [B]ecause they felt they had to take whatever jobs were possible to raise their kids; to do this they never really did exactly what they wanted to do. Sort of having guilt about that and trying to figure it out.

So, I think it’s a huge thing with a lot of kids who are immigrants but grew up in the United States. It’s like seeing your parents struggle and feeling like that’s on you in a way. Because the only reason they are here and continue to be here, it’s mostly because of you.

So that’s been something I’ve been struggling with a lot. Especially like I was saying with my dad and how I could sort of tell that he’s not very content being here. And so he wants

LUCÍA: Bueno, en realidad soy de la isla de Santa Lucía. Me llaman así por mi país, Lucía. Para mí, tú sabes, muchas veces las personas sentirán que viniste a los Estados Unidos porque eres pobre o estás enfermo o tienes algún tipo de prestigio. Realmente no sé cómo explicarlo. Pero muchos de nosotros del Caribe, no se diría que eras rico. Pero, al mismo tiempo, te iba bien porque pudiste vivir una vida mejor que cuando viniste aquí por primera vez. Por ejemplo, cuando estaba en mi país, decía “yo gano”, porque lo que quisiera lo podía conseguir.

Pero venir aquí fue diferente. Fue muy diferente porque número uno, o sea ... harás lo que sea necesario para tu supervivencia. Hice aproximadamente cinco trabajos de trabajadoras domésticas, pero no encontramos trabajos de trabajadoras domésticas. Recordé la muerte de mi abuela.

Porque, sabes, el trabajo era tan... No lo quiero porque el número uno, en mi país, no lo harías ... los perros se pasean solos. No paseas perros. Ahora, cuando te dicen que pasees perros y sabes que no estás acostumbrado, te hace sentir mal.

CHRISTINE: Dilo.

LUCÍA: Tú sabes, eso... te hace sentir que solo soy ... porque no quiero recoger caca de gente, ¿por qué debería ir a pasear un perro y recoger caca de perro? Hay muchas cosas con las que no estaba de acuerdo, pero quería la paga por lo menos. Porque cuando co-

mencé a trabajar, quería la paga para enviar cosas para mis hijos en casa y cosas así. Entonces, es una situación degradante para muchos de nosotros.

Pero al mismo tiempo, si tu empleador te trataba con respeto, no te importaba hacerlo, porque quieres la “Green Card” para ayudarte. Ahora, lo bueno de esto es que conoces a tu empleador.

Tú les cocinas; pueden llegar por la noche, a las 11, y tú me dices después que después de que tú comas, yo voy a comer. Nunca estuve de acuerdo con eso.

O sea, quiero decir, en esos días, 1992, fue un poco difícil. Ahora, tus amigos, ellos te dirán que vengas para acá, diciéndote que las cosas son muy buenas porque es la tierra de las oportunidades.

Esa es la tierra del trabajo, tú sabes.

Vemos el infierno en la nación de las mismas personas que nos piden que vengamos.

E incluso... no es de un solo lado.

Porque entonces, cuando mis hijas vinieron aquí y tuve que dormir con dos niños, sufrían porque su madre no estaba allí. No porque, tú sabes, las cosas no fueran buenas con ellos.

Porque los amigos que tenía, solían llevarlos al cine, a todas partes. Pero aun así no fue suficiente para ellos.

Así que ellos siempre estaban llorando.

Fui a una conferencia de padres y maestros, y cuando fui, la maestra me dijo que mi hija era una de los que siempre estaba llorando y mis lágrimas caían.

Estaba dentro de ella. Los otros pequeños dijeron que ella era descuidada y demás. Ahora, yo conozco a mis hijos. Yo sé quiénes son. Y yo los traje aquí. Fue ... ya sabes, siempre sentí que era mi culpa. Porque, en casa, no tenían que pasar por eso.

Tengo una madre. Tengo una abuela.

Ellos tienen tías. Ellos tienen parientes.

Ellos tienen vecinos. Porque eres... tú vives en una comunidad. Y viniendo aquí, ya sabes, y viendo su dolor y sufrimiento, no podía volver a hacer ese trabajo con dormida. Tuve que dejarlo, y básicamente, podría haber dejado de trabajar durante unos tres años y todos hubieran pensado que yo era perezosa.

Sabes, no quería hacer esto. No quería

hacer aquello. No quería hacer eso, pero creo que los niños eran mi responsabilidad. Entonces sucedió que tomé preescolar, después de la escuela y algo ... ya sabes. Terminé trabajando allí durante 15 años. A los 15 años, cuando cerraron la escuela, descubrí que no pagaban desempleo ni nada.

Sin embargo, ya sabes, al final del año, recibirías tu declaración de impuestos y demás. Entonces, realmente me puso en la posición donde podría haber sido una persona amargada. Elegí, debido a mi crianza de mis padres, que hay algunas cosas que no permites que te hagan caer porque nunca sabes lo que sucederá mañana.

Podría seguir y seguir. Ellos tienen..., así que terminaré aquí.

SAMAH: Si puedo responder—

- Sí.

SAMAH: No sé. Me siento como alguien que, supongo, yo...

- ¿Puedes decir tu nombre primero?

SAMAH: Oh, disculpen. Soy Samah.

Nací en Liberia. Soy medio liberiana, medio sierraleonesa. Creo que algo con lo que he estado luchando, en la medida que he crecido, es ser muy americanizada. Pensando en mis padres, sabes, pienso que sentías que era tu culpa, muchas cosas que tus hijos sentían porque no estabas cerca y eso. A menudo sentí que mis padres tuvieron problemas y que fue mi culpa de alguna forma. ¿Tiene sentido?

Porque sentían que tenían que tomar cualquier trabajo que fuera posible para criar a sus hijos; para hacer esto nunca hicieron exactamente lo que querían hacer. Algo así como sentirse culpable por eso e intentar resolverlo.

Creo que es algo grande con muchos niños que son inmigrantes pero que crecieron en los Estados Unidos. Es como ver a tus padres luchar y sentir que eso está contigo de alguna manera.

Porque la única razón por la que están aquí y siguen estando aquí, es principalmente por ti. Así que eso es algo con lo que he estado luchando mucho.

Especialmente como estaba diciendo, con mi padre y cómo me daba cuenta de que no está muy contento de estar aquí. Entonces, él quiere irse a casa, y me siento culpable por eso.

ENGLISH to go home, and I feel guilt about it.

Yeah.

If it weren’t for us he would have been able to do what he wanted.

To do the things that he wanted to.

CHRISTINE: The kids become the other extreme. The kids who are there become extremely bitter with their parents here.

you [to] move from here. But then that man would look outside and you know what he would say? It’s time for you to move. But I’m content — listen, I eat this food I’m entitled to lay right here.

Fall asleep. It’s not if I choose to.

Yeah.

Hmm.

Yeah.

LUCIA: I think it’s the truth.

CHRISTINE: And when they come here, they’re extremely bitter.

Because by that time the family who is here is establishing a new family.

Having kids again. Plus working for the family they’re working for. So it brings resentment.

CHRISTINE: But that’s the story.

Because number one, if I did not bring my children here I wouldn’t be here.

But the fact is that I brought them here. For instance, she was 6 years when she came up and up to now, [after] three years, and she’s [still] not documented. I filed for her.

After I filed for her, they said that she should have gone home. [T]hen, when you go to the lawyer, the lawyer is telling you that if she goes home, she won’t be able to come back, because they will put a 10 year limit on her passport. Now as a mother, how do you think one would feel, because you work hard — harder than if you were in your country. [I]n my country I was— I began as a teacher in the suburbs and here I pick up children doo-doo, clean children, you know.

Held them and thing, and then to know that’s your outcome. I happen to go to college and get a college degree, and so forth, while she was sick. [I] hoped that something would have happened during that time. [E]ven now, I cannot go on a vacation because of her.

Because the others have their papers.

I will not go on vacation because of her, you know. If it’s an emergency, I will travel. Like last year I was able to travel three times in the year.

Before I was able to travel once because it was an emergency. But, to say, go on a vacation, I can’t, because she cannot go.

LUCIA: So I will not leave her and then go on vacation.

Hmm. LUCIA: So you know, it has it’s ups and down. And it’s something that troubles parents when they know that a child cannot do something.

Yeah.

CHRISTINE: So could I answer your question if that’s okay? Not too full, two parts question.

Hmm. CHRISTINE: It’s like a double edged sword.

Yeah.

Christine: But it’s an interesting thing.

And it’s painful. And it’s really painful on either spectrum. The parent and the child. You know. I remember a woman said to me her daughter is in the hospital and the daughter didn’t tell her that she’s in the hospital. And clearly the daughter is bitter because her mother brought her later on to [the] States. The mother left Grenada and brought the child later on to the States so there [are many reasons].

Yeah.

CHRISTINE: Yeah. It’s not easy measure. It’s the neo liberal policy thing that does this stuff to the people.

Yeah.

CHRISTINE: And by the way we are all immigrants in this life. You know, we have rules that are put up that say you’re from here; you’re from there.

You’re from here; he’s from, and she’s from here. They’re from here; they’re from there. Hmm-hmm that’s a man-made wall.

Yeah.

CHRISTINE: That’s a man-made wall.

Those are fictitious walls. Those are walls in our spirits. Those aren’t walls that — that is established by — listen, they say where you sit right now – LUCIA: Yeah. That’s your spot.

CHRISTINE: That’s your spot about views of yours. Nobody could really tell

ESPAÑOL Si no fuera por nosotros, él habría podido hacer lo que él quería.

Para hacer las cosas que él quería hacer. Sí.

LUCÍA: Creo que es la verdad.

Porque número uno, si no hubiera traído a mis hijos aquí, no estaría aquí.

Pero el hecho es que sí los traje aquí.

Por ejemplo, ella tenía 6 años cuando vino y hasta ahora, después de 3 años, aún no está documentada. Yo solicité lo de ella.

Cuando fui a solicitar lo de ella, me dijeron que ella debía haberse ido a casa. Entonces, cuando tú vas donde el abogado, él te dice que si se va a su casa, no podrá regresar, porque pondrán un límite de 10 años en su pasaporte. Ahora, como madre, ¿cómo crees que se sentiría uno, porque trabajas duro, más duro que si estuvieras en tu país? En mi país, yo era ...

Empecé como maestra en los suburbios y aquí recojo la caca de niños, limpio niños, ¿sabes? Los cargo y eso, y luego saber que ese es tu resultado. Sucede que fui a la universidad y obtuve un título universitario, y demás, mientras ella estaba enferma. Esperaba que algo hubiera sucedido durante ese tiempo. Incluso ahora, no puedo irme de vacaciones por ella. Porque los otros tienen sus papeles. No me iré de vacaciones por ella, ¿sabes? Si es una emergencia, viajaré. Al igual que el año pasado, pude viajar tres veces en el año. Antes de poder viajar una vez porque era una emergencia. Pero, por decir, irme de vacaciones, no puedo, porque ella no puede ir.

- Hmm.

CHRISTINE: Y cuando vienen aquí, están extremadamente amargados.

Porque para ese momento la familia que está aquí está estableciendo una nueva familia. Están teniendo hijos otra vez. Además de trabajar para la familia para la que están trabajando. Entonces eso trae resentimiento.

- Hmm.

CHRISTINE: Es como un cuchillo de doble filo.

- Sí.

CHRISTINE: Pero es algo interesante.

Y es doloroso Y es realmente doloroso en cualquier espectro. El padre y el niño. Ya sabes. Recuerdo que una mujer me dijo que su hija estaba en el hospital y que la hija no le dijo que estaba en el hospital. Y claramente la hija está amargada porque su madre la trajo más tarde a los Estados Unidos.

La madre dejó Granada y trajo a la niña más tarde a los Estados Unidos, así que hay muchas razones.

- SÍ.

CHRISTINE: Sí. No es una medida fácil.

Es la política neo liberal lo que hace estas cosas a la gente.

- Sí.

LUCÍA: Entonces no me iré de vacaciones dejándola.

CHRISTINE: Y, por cierto, todos somos inmigrantes en esta vida. Tú sabes, tenemos reglas que dicen que eres de aquí; eres de allí; eres de aquí; él es de allá, y ella es de aquí. Ellos son de aquí; son de allí. Hmm-hmm eso es una pared hecha por el hombre.

- Hmm.

LUCÍA: Entonces sabes, tiene sus altibajos. Y es algo que preocupa a los padres cuando saben que un niño no puede hacer algo.

- Sí.

CHRISTINE: Entonces, ¿podría responder a tu pregunta si está bien?

No demasiado profunda, una pregunta de dos partes.

- Sí.

CHRISTINE: los niños se convierten en el otro extremo. Los niños que están allá se vuelven extremadamente

- Sí.

CHRISTINE: Esa es una pared hecha por el hombre. Esas son paredes ficticias. Esas son paredes en nuestros espíritus. Esas no son paredes que, eso está establecido por, o sea, establecen dónde te encuentras en este momento.

LUCÍA: Sí. Ese es tu lugar.

CHRISTINE: Ese es tu lugar sobre puntos de vista tuyos. Nadie podría decirte que te muevas de aquí. Pero entonces ese hombre miraría afuera y ¿sabes lo que diría? Es hora de que te muevas. Pero estoy satisfecha.

Escucha, como esta comida y tengo derecho a estar aquí. Dormirme aquí.

No es si elijo hacerlo.

- SÍ.

CHRISTINE: Pero esa es la historia.
