THIS IS AN EXCERPT FROM A WE THE NEWS STORY CIRCLE THAT TOOK PLACE AT TIJAY MOHAMMED HOUSE IN THE BRONX ON AUGUST 4TH, 2018.

THE STORY CIRCLE WAS CENTERED AROUND A MIGRANT’S WALKING JOURNEY FROM GHANA TO THE UNITED STATES ABDUL MUTALIB WAS BORN IN GHANA. BELOW IS A CONVERSATION BETWEEN ABDUL AND LIZANIA CRUZ (INTERVIEWER).

My name is Abdul. I was one of the people that made the journey to the United States. [The journey started from Ghana]. For [some of us] we fly to Brazil and [f ]rom Brazil we moved to Ecuador; some went from Ecuador to Costa Rica, [s]ome from Brazil to Honduras, [s]ome from Brazil to Nicaragua, [and] some from Brazil to Mexico. But those who moved from Brazil to Ecuador, by water, by bus, experienced so many things on the way coming here. [L]ike from Ecuador, they start making the journey to Colombia and [f ] rom Colombia, you take a bus. You have to beat every border before you go to Colombia. [W]hen you meet Colombia, at the end of [the country] they have a river. They call, uh, that place, um,… Oh, shit. I forget the name.

WHEN YOU REMEMBER YOU CAN JUST SAY IT.

And when you got there …they hide you [for] some time to cross [the border] in the middle of the night. They put you in the boat, [and cover you]; [i]t’s like a ten hour journey [on the water]. You don’t see anything. They take you all around [and] across the river to a nearby village in Colombia on an island. [W]e call that village Cacarica.

From Cacarica, you start walking. Passing through part of the jungle, through water, walking, walking, walking. Before you reach the boundary between Colombia and Panama. From Colombia and Panama, there’s a boundary between the [two countries]. From there, we start moving ahead. You need to go meet the soldiers. They rescue you, give you food sometimes, and they search everywhere in your body. [I]f you don’t have anything like [a] gun or any weapon with you, you will face immigration of Panama, They will keep you there for like 21 days, in their house. You don’t go anywhere. They just give you food, and they keep you there. They ask about your information and everything. [And] after they will ask you where you’re going. You say you are going to [the] United States. They say, “Okay.” They will release you. But you shouldn’t [stay] around Panama. They give you three days or one week to leave their country. So, from there, you move again and take a bus to Costa Rica.

In Costa Rica th[ere] is struggling. You meet different kind of people on the way. You meet, um, robbers. They come, search you, take off your…everything in the…in the forest. And it’s kind of [a] very bad experience. From there, you go to Honduras. From Honduras, you try as much… Sorry, you go to Nicaragua. From Nicaragua, you pass through water [a]nd then try to dodge some of the immigration and the soldiers, [before you go to Honduras].

From Honduras, the same thing. You [can] take a bus. Some people take the forest way. You past there [as well] struggling. Sometimes no food, no water. But we try to survive. From Honduras, you come

to Guatemala. When you come to Guatemala…you know you are somehow safe.

In Guatemala, that is the easiest way [for] you to enter Mexico. When you got to Guatemala, you don’t have any panic [anymore]. But those [who come after, they may all be at risk]— it is all very risk[y]. So, when you’re in Guatemala, you’re very safe. [There is] [j]ust one part of Guatemala that [doesn’t] have problems. [You go to] their border and [then] go to Mexico. Once [you] reach Mexico, [you] go straight to [Mexican] immigration. And then they will know what you want, ”you are here [because you want to go to] the United States.” They keep you there for 40 days.

When you are detained, you don’t see [what is around you], you are just detained. They document everything for you. So, when they release you, you have to make your journey from there.They’ll also tell you that they don’t need you in their country. They give you 21 days to move from the country [and] from there you have to find your way. You go by bus, or you go to[...]what do they call it? Texas. Or you go to any border that [will bring you] to the United States. You have to try your best to get there.

The journey is very, very risky. And at the same time, some people don’t know; some people die on their way coming here. We see skeletons on the way. We see people dying in front of us. We can’t help. We can’t do anything because we are in the deep of the forest, the jungle.

Everybody is trying to survive ‘til we get here.

So, when we got to that, um…what do you call it? [The] Tijuana border. [W]e go to immigration and tell them your story— the reason why you moved from Africa to there, and they’ll give you [a] form to fill your name, where you’re from, and your problems and stuff.

But before you move to immigration, they have a room; we call that room the cold room.

They will put you in the cold room for, like, three days. And [the room] it’s very cold room. Trust me, it’s very, very cold. And there’s nothing [that] they will give you. What they will give you is bread and water. [Y]ou are in the cold, shivering. They don’t care. [You are there] for three days, [then] they will start telling you, “Okay, fine,” that they are going to detain you and [that] they are going to take you to the detention center. So, they move you to [a] detention center. It depends on the detention center. You don’t know where you’re going now. They will ask you if you have any relative[s] in the United States.

If you say yes, that means okay; if you have this person’s number, [you] call him. If you don’t have [a relative] then they just throw you anywhere in the country; they select any detention [center], you go there and [you] start from there. [It] depends on the story you have.

If you start telling them your story, you will go to [an] interview. If you have a credible fear, they will put you in detention for some time, [then] they will grant you parole to go out. If you have no credible fear, then you will [have to] face a trial. It’s like you’re living with a criminals; we are among the criminals.

Before they take you to the detention [center], they tell you, “I’m a cop,” and they handcuff you, [they cuff ] your hand and your leg, like a criminal. They transfer you in their plane. You don’t know where you’re going on, you just end up on a plane.

They just transfer you…just tells us [we’re] in Denver or, what do you call it...uh, New Jersey. And it kind of depends on the detention [available]. [Maybe] California. It’s only when you [have] gone to the detention they tell you, “Oh, we are in California detention…[o]h,

you are [in] Texas.” So, when they leave you there, it’s up to you… You don’t have anything. You don’t have say.

You are there. Some people have been there for two years. Two years.

They are not criminal. They are just there to seek for asylum.

And they are there [for] two years. Some are there [for] one year.

Some, if you are lucky, six months— you can get out. Some people have been denied their asylum [request], and they are being deported back. Something can be denied, but we are lucky to be granted our own. [Some] go out back to the detention center and are back on the deportation process; So [that’s] the kind of system [it is].

And the food they serve at the detention is very bad. Trust me.

We’ve been in Mexico [and] Mexico is somehow better— because [in Mexico] they serve good [food]. But the United States, trust me, it’s very bad. It’s very, very bad. They serve you a scoop of rice, a scoop of cabbage and salad, a scoop of, what do you call it— soup or something. You just have to take it [and] take some water. That’s it. In the morning, they wake you up, you look, there’s cereal. You just take it. That was it. That’s how it goes. So, you’ve been there for several [months]; for me, like, I had been for almost eight months before I had the privilege to come out. Some of our friends have been in there for over a year before they came out.

Yeah. So, when we are there, we start asking ourselves, “So, are we in the United States?” [We] came here for asylum. We came here because we are having a problem back in our country. That’s why we came here. And so if we are here to seek asylum, but [they are] treating us like this— do you understand what’s going on? And they’ll leave you there sometimes and you will be[come] tired of your cell, then you say, “okay, take me back to my country.” You’ll be tired because [of ] the kind of treatment they would give you. [T]rust me, you can never do anything there. Anytime they take you out for something, they chain you— they chain your neck, everywhere, like a criminal. I’ve never experienced [being] handcuffed in my life before, but [did] due to this kind of journey...to the United States. I’ve experienced this,… my life… being in handcuffs, being in chains. [When] you walk in, on the plane…on the flight. We just come to the plane, [but you are chained]. If you’re in a plane crash, [you are still chained].

“If something happen[s], how can we escape?” You are just telling us… showing us because you can’t even use your hand to eat in the plane.

[You] pass through [all of these obstacles]. And then, we are expecting that [we get] out. We have to get peace of mind to; like, to have the privilege wake up. The reason why we are here is to achieve our dreams. [In addition to all of this] when we are out, we [have to] keep on going for immigration court.

Some of them are scared to be in the town; most of them are back in Canada. They don’t know what’s gonna happen next. You see. So, the story is very [long]. I just cut some of the story, because if I go into details, it’s kind of…bad. It’s very bad.

So, that’s the journey. It’s very, very stressful. And people die. People die. So many friends have died on their way here. Some of [those] friends, I know them from Ghana. We’re together, we’ve been on the journey. They die. They’re dead. So, it’s kind of very pathetic.

The island is called Turbo. From Turbo, they put you on a boat and they cover you because it’s like they are trying to...it’s like smuggling.

They are smuggling you from [Turbo], there to the island. So, they cover you. You don’t know where you are going— you’ll just be on the sea for ten hours. After, they drop you [i]n the night, around two o’clock, they wake you up [and say], “Let’s go again.”

We [are] just talking in the forest. And [while you are walking], you [may] see a sign of a tiger, a sign of [a] lion. Yeah. It’s not, like, maybe, you just go in the jungle, and there [are no] wild animals. You are taking the risk. Either you die, or you survive.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU?

Some people make [it in] like three months. Me…it took me… [B] ecause when you reach…during my era, when we were coming, we reach Nicaragua. And Nicaragua, there was this Ebola crisis and a campaign of Ebola from Africa.

When you reach there, they just arrest us. We have to be there for 30 days. They close you [off ]. They leave you in [a] room that has nobody. You don’t have access to go out. They protect you until they [find] out that you don’t have any kind of sickness, like Ebola, then [they allow you] to go out. From [the] capital you have to go pay like $79 dollars before they can grant you a permit to go.

So, that’s how, when you don’t have money, you can be [there for] more than six months or one year on the street…or on the road. But if you have money, you can try and make it the best to go. So, that’s how it was. Some people make two months, three months, four months, five months. Those who are lucky, one month, one half month. Yeah, they are here. And when you are here, it’s not like you are [truly] here just yet. You’re going to detentions centers and they will keep you there for [maybe] six months, seven months, eight months, before you’re released. So, it’s kind of [a] bad experience.

EL CICLO DE HISTORIAS SE CENTRÓ EN EL VIAJE A PIE DE UN INMIGRANTE DESDE GHANA A LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS ABDUL MUTALIB NACIÓ EN GHANA. A CONTINUACIÓN UNA CONVERSACIÓN ENTRE ABDUL Y LIZANIA CRUZ (ENTREVISTADORA).

Mi nombre es Abdul. Yo fui una de las personas que hizo el viaje a los Estados Unidos. [El viaje comenzó desde Ghana]. Algunos de nosotros volamos a Brasil y de Brasil nos movimos a Ecuador; algunos fueron de Ecuador a Costa Rica, algunos de Brasil a Honduras, algunos de Brasil a Nicaragua, y algunos de Brasil a México. Pero aquellos que se movieron de Brasil a Ecuador, por agua, en autobús, experimentaron tantas cosas en el camino viniendo aquí. Por ejemplo, desde Ecuador, comienzas a viajar a Colombia y desde Colombia tomas un autobús. Tienes que atravesar cada frontera antes de ir a Colombia. Cuando te encuentras en Colombia, al final del país tienen un río. A ese lugar lo llaman, eh, ese lugar, um, ... Oh, mierda.

Olvidé el nombre.

CUANDO LO RECUERDES PUEDES DECIRLO.

Y cuando llegas ahí ... te ocultan por un tiempo para cruzar [la frontera] en el medio de la noche. Te ponen en el bote, y te cubren; es un viaje como de diez horas [por agua]. No ves nada. Te llevan alrededor [y] a través del río a un pueblo cercano en Colombia en una isla. Llamamos a ese pueblo Cacarica. Desde Cacarica, empiezas a caminar. Cruzando parte de la jungla, a través del agua, caminando, caminando, caminando. Antes de llegar al límite entre Colombia y Panamá. Desde Colombia y Panamá, hay una división entre los dos [países]. A partir de ahí, comenzamos a avanzar. Tienes que ir a conocer a los soldados. Te rescatan, te dan comida a veces, y buscan en todas partes de tu cuerpo. Si no tienes nada como una pistola o cualquier arma contigo, te enfrentas a la inmigración de Panamá. Te mantienen allí por 21 días como mínimo, en su casa. No vas a ningún lado. Simplemente te dan comida y te mantienen allí. Preguntan sobre tu información y todo. [Y] después te preguntan a dónde vas.

Tú dices que vas a [los] Estados Unidos. Ellos dicen: “Está bien”. Te liberan. Pero no debes quedarte en Panamá. Te dan tres días o una semana para salir de su país. Entonces, desde allí, te mueves otra vez y tomas un autobús a Costa Rica.

En Costa Rica hay que luchar. Te encuentras con diferentes tipos de personas en el camino. Te encuentras, eh, ladrones. Vienen, te buscan, te quitan... todo en el ... en el bosque. Y es una muy mala experiencia. A partir de ahí, vas a Honduras.

Desde Honduras, intentas lo más que puedas ... Lo siento, vas a Nicaragua. Desde Nicaragua, pasas por agua y luego intentas evadir parte de la inmigración y los soldados, [antes de ir a Honduras].

Desde Honduras, lo mismo. Puedes tomar un autobús. Algunas personas toman el camino del bosque. Cruzas allí [también] luchando.

A veces no hay comida, no hay agua. Pero tratamos de sobrevivir.

Desde Honduras, vienes a Guatemala. Cuando vienes a Guatemala... sabes que de alguna manera estás a salvo.

Guatemala, esa es la forma más fácil para entrar a México. Cuando llegas a Guatemala, ya no tienes pánico [nunca más]. Pero [aquellos que vienen después, todos pueden estar en riesgo]—todo es muy riesgoso. Entonces, cuando estás en Guatemala, estás muy seguro.

Hay [solo] una parte de Guatemala que no tiene problemas. Vas a su frontera y luego a México. Una vez que [llegas] a México, [vas] directamente a la inmigración [mexicana]. Y entonces saben lo que quieres: “está aquí [porque quieres ir a] los Estados Unidos”.

Te mantienen ahí durante 40 días.

Cuando estás detenido, no ves [lo que está a tu alrededor], simplemente estás detenido. Documentan todo por ti. Entonces, cuando te liberan, debes hacer tu viaje desde allí. También te dirán que no te necesitan en su país. Te dan 21 días para moverte del país [y] desde allí tienes que encontrar tu camino. ¿Vas en autobús, o vas a [...] cómo lo llaman? Texas. O vas a cualquier frontera que te lleve a los Estados Unidos. Debes hacer todo lo posible para llegar allí.

El viaje es muy, muy arriesgado. Y al mismo tiempo, algunas personas no saben; algunas personas mueren en su camino viniendo aquí. Vemos esqueletos en el camino. Vemos gente muriendo frente a nosotros. No podemos ayudar. No podemos hacer nada porque estamos en las profundidades del bosque, la jungla. Todo el mundo está tratando de sobrevivir hasta llegar aquí.

Entonces, cuando llegamos a el, eh ... ¿cómo se llama? La frontera de Tijuana. Vas a inmigración y les cuentas tu historia: la razón por la que te mudaste de África para allá, y te dan [un] formulario para que llenes tu nombre, de dónde eres, tus problemas y demás. Pero antes de pasar a la inmigración, tienen un cuarto; a ese cuarto le llamamos el cuarto frío.

Te ponen en el cuarto frío durante, como, tres días. Y [el cuarto] es un cuarto muy frío. Créeme, es muy, muy frío. Y no hay nada [que] te dan. Lo que te dan es pan y agua. [Y] estás en el frío, temblando. No les importa. Tú estás ahí por tres días, [luego] comienzan a decirte, “Bien, bien”, que te van a detener y [que] te llevarán al centro de detención. Entonces, te trasladan a [un] centro de detención. Depende del centro de detención. No sabes a dónde vas ahora. Te preguntan si tienes parientes en los Estados Unidos. Si dices que sí, eso significa que okey; si tienes el número de esta persona, lo llamas. Si no tienes [un pariente], entonces te tirarán en cualquier parte del país; seleccionan cualquier centro de detención, vas allí y comienzas desde ahí.

[Eso] depende de la historia que tienes. Si comienza a contarles tu historia, irás a [una] entrevista. Si tienes miedo creíble, te pondrán en detención por un tiempo, [luego] te otorgarán la libertad condicional para salir. Si no tienes miedo creíble, tendrás que enfrentar un juicio.

Es como si vivieras con un delincuente; estamos entre los criminales.

Antes de llevarte al centro de detención, te dicen: “Soy policía”, y te esposan. [Te esposan] la mano y la pierna, como un criminal. Te transfieren en su avión. No sabes hacia dónde te diriges, terminas subiéndote a un avión.

Simplemente te transfieren... solo nos dicen [estamos] en Denver o, cómo lo llamas... Nueva Jersey. Y depende de la detención [disponible]. [Tal vez] California. Solo cuando has ido a la detención te dicen: “Oh, estamos en la detención de California... Oh, estás en Texas”. Entonces, cuando te dejan ahí, depende de ti ... No tienes nada. No tienes voz.

Estás ahí. Algunas personas han estado allí por dos años. Dos años.

Ellos no son criminales. Están allí para buscar asilo.

Y están allí [durante] dos años. Algunos están ahí [por] un año.

Algunos, si tienen suerte, seis meses... puedes salir. A algunas personas se les ha denegado su solicitud de asilo y les están deportando de vuelta. Algo puede ser negado, pero tenemos la suerte de que nos otorguen el nuestro. [Algunos] regresan al centro de detención y vuelven al proceso de deportación. Entonces ese es el tipo de sistema [que es].

Y la comida que sirven en la detención es muy mala. Créeme. Hemos estado en México [y] México es de alguna manera mejor, porque [en México] sirven buena comida. Pero Estados Unidos, créeme, es muy malo. Es muy, muy malo. Te sirven una cucharada de arroz, una cucharada de repollo y ensalada, una cucharada de, cómo se llama ... sopa o algo así. Solo tienes que tomarlo [y] beber un poco de agua.

Eso es. Por la mañana, te despiertan, miras, hay cereal. Simplemente tómalo. Eso fue todo. Así es como va. Entonces, has estado allí por varios meses; para mí, había estado durante casi ocho meses antes de que tuviera el privilegio de salir. Algunos de nuestros amigos han estado allí por más de un año antes de que salieran.

Sí. Entonces, cuando estamos allí, comenzamos a preguntarnos: “Entonces, ¿estamos en los Estados Unidos?” [Nosotros] vinimos aquí para pedir asilo. Vinimos aquí porque estamos teniendo un problema en nuestro país. Es por eso que vinimos aquí. Y si estamos aquí para buscar asilo, pero [nos] están tratando así, ¿entiendes lo que está pasando? Y te dejarán allí a veces y estarás [cansado] de tu celda, y luego dirás, “está bien, llévame de regreso a mi país”. Estarás cansado del tipo de tratamiento que te dan. Créeme, nunca se puede hacer nada allí. Cada vez que te sacan para buscar algo, te encadenan: te encadenan el cuello, en todas partes, como un criminal.

Nunca antes había tenido la sensación de haber sido esposado en mi vida, pero [debido] a este tipo de viaje... a los Estados Unidos. He experimentado esto,... mi vida... estar esposado, estar encadenado.

[Cuando] entras, en el avión... en el vuelo. Venimos al avión, [pero estás encadenado]. Si estás en un accidente aéreo, [sigues encadenado]. “Si algo sucede, ¿cómo podemos escapar?” Usted simplemente nos está mandando... mostrándonos porque ni siquiera puedes usar tu mano para comer en el avión.

Atraviesas todos estos obstáculos. Y luego, estamos esperando salir.

Tenemos que tener la tranquilidad de hacerlo; como, tener el privilegio de despertar. La razón por la que estamos aquí es para lograr nuestros sueños. [Además de todo esto] cuando salimos, debemos [seguir] adelante para el tribunal de inmigración.

Algunos de ellos tienen miedo de estar en la ciudad; la mayoría de ellos están de vuelta en Canadá. No saben lo que sucederá después.

Tú ves. Entonces, la historia es muy larga. Corté parte de la historia, porque si entramos en detalles, es algo así como ... malo.

Es muy malo.

Entonces, ese es el viaje. Es muy, muy estresante. Y la gente muere.

La gente muere. Muchos amigos han muerto en su camino hacia aquí. Algunos de esos amigos, los conozco de Ghana. Estamos juntos, hemos estado en el camino. Ellos mueren. Están muertos.

Entonces, es algo muy patético.

La isla se llama Turbo. Desde Turbo, te suben a un bote y te cubren porque es como si estuvieran tratando de... es como contrabando. Te están traficando desde [Turbo], a la isla. Así que te cubren. No sabes hacia dónde te diriges; estás en el mar durante diez horas. Después, te dejan caer durante la noche, alrededor de las dos en punto, te despiertan [y dicen], “Vámonos otra vez.”

Nosotros [solo] estamos hablando en el bosque. Y mientras caminas, puede ver señales de un tigre, un signo de un león. Sí. No es como, tal vez, solo vas a la jungla, y no hay animales salvajes. Usted está tomando el riesgo. O mueres o sobrevives.

¿CUÁNTO TIEMPO TE TOMÓ?

Algunas personas lo hacen [como] en tres meses. A mí... me tomó...

Porque cuando alcanzas... durante mi época, cuando estábamos llegando, llegamos a Nicaragua. Y en Nicaragua, hubo esta crisis del Ébola y una campaña de Ébola desde África.

Cuando llegas allí, simplemente nos arrestan. Tenemos que estar ahí por treinta días. Te encierran. Te dejan en una habitación sin nadie.

No tienes acceso para salir. Te protegen hasta que descubren que no tienes ningún tipo de enfermedad, como el ébola, y te permiten salir. Desde la capital debe pagar como 79 dólares antes de que le otorguen un permiso para irte.

Entonces, así es como, cuando no tienes dinero, puedes estar allí durante más de seis meses o un año en la calle... o en la carretera. Pero si tienes dinero, puedes intentar hacerlo lo mejor posible. Entonces, así es como fue. Algunas personas lo hacen en dos meses, tres meses, cuatro meses, cinco meses. Los que tienen suerte, un mes, un mes y medio. Sí, están aquí. Y cuando estás aquí, no es como si estuvieras [realmente] aquí todavía. Vas a centros de detención y te mantienen allí durante [quizás] seis meses, siete meses, ocho meses, antes de que te liberen. Entonces, es una especie de mala experiencia.
