The Alliance staff has hit the ground running during the first quarter of 2024, providing our membership with some of the best business insight and networking opportunities to help them grow their business.

Highlights of the first quarter include a sold out Ranch Scramble Golf Tournament, over 200 members at our January luncheon where we heard updates from both Manatee and Sarasota County Administrators, an exclusive chairman’s lunch for our investor level sponsors with congressional representative Vern Buchanan and finally, over 300 in attendance at our Annual Membership Luncheon where I ceremoniously took the gavel from Past Chairman, Erik Hanson of Shutts & Bowen.

These events are made possible not only by our hard working staff but by our members and their support. As this organization continues to grow, our voice as an alliance will only get stronger, making many organizations and individuals include our Alliance as a “must do”, when it comes to participation and getting their voice out.

Finally, as mentioned at our Annual Luncheon, our focus will begin to implement our strategic plan amongst our dedicated committees, staff and LWRBA Board of Directors. We are excited to ramp up our revised mission statement and look forward to our vision as we progress to our 20th anniversary next year.

POSITIONED TOWARDS THE FUTURE

On a late February afternoon, President & CEO, Brittany Lamont welcomed Erik Hanson of Shutts & Bowen to the stage to give his final address as the 2023 Chairman of the Board. After cracking a few jokes about always being a bridesmaid and never the bride (Hanson was Incoming Chair for three years in a row) he got down to business.

In 2023, the Alliance staff and Board of Directors focused on three areas; growth, advocacy and planning for the future.

GROWTH

Last year, the LWRBA welcomed nearly 200 new members, bringing the current membership to more than 700 business members. The membership committee’s focus was on creating processes to ensure members get the value they seek. Additionally, new and improved programming was put in place. Year over year there was an 11% increase in monthly luncheon attendance.

The Allaince also hosted the Annual Hob Nob event for the first time (previoulsy hosted by the Bradenton Area EDC). In its 34th year, nearly 500 attendees were in attendance. The Alliance Gives Back initiative also saw record growth with over 350 volunteers, 950 donated hours and an economic impact of $27,000. Of course, all of this was shared on social media expanding the Alliance’s connection beyond in person events with 550 new followers on Instagram and more than 1,000 new followers on LinkedIn.

ADVOCACY

The Alliance focused heavily on advocacy, meeting with the state delegation in Tallahasee to go over key issues affecting the business community. In 2023, the Alliance sought to improve transportation, insurance, and support higher education institutions to meet the needs of the growing workforce. Additionally, Lamont began leading a task force in partnership with the Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County and Representative Fiona McFarland to find creative solutions for the childcare crisis. Quarterly, Hanson hosted Breakfast with the Chairman roundtables to continue these important conversations.

FUTURE

Before closing, Hanson shared what he was most proud of; creating a three year startegic plan, and a revitalized vision and mission statement that will see the Alliance through its 20th year.

12 the connection // spring 2024
The Willis Smith team pokes fun by bringging cut outs of Otterness’ head. Monaca Onstad of Onplace and David Fink of Family Office Services flash a smile for the Staff member asks Jordan Sebastiano of Servpro of Bradenton, “What do you love about the Alliance?” Erik Hanson gives his final address as Chairman of the Board.

CHAIRMAN’S AWARD

Then, it was time for the coveted Chairman’s Award. This award recognizes a member who has gone above and beyond and has been a champion and confidant, providing guidance and insight to the leaders of the LWRBA. Hanson welcomed David Fink of Family Office Services to the stage, followed by a standing ovation.

As everyone settled down and took their seats, Hanson made his final act as Chairman of the Board and passed the gavel to David Otterness of Willis Smith Construction. This too, was met with lots of cheers, applause and a few cutouts of David’s face from the Willis Smith team before he could get down to business.

STRATEGIC PLAN

Otterness began by giving a tearfelt thank you to his wife and team at Willis Smith Construction for their support and quickly shared highlights of what a great year 2024 has already been. This is largely in part because the of new vision and mission statement and strategic plan set in place by the LWRBA Board of Directors.

VISION

To be the leading business organization, fostering a strong quality of life for business and residents of the LWR region

MISSION

Support the success of our members through unparalleled access to business connections, resources, and advocacy

STRATEGIC PLAN

Acheiving these things can be lofty, but Otterness continued by sharing the three pillars of focus for the coming year.

ENGAGE

The Alliance will set goals to increase engagement in programming and events. Additionally, the Alliance will find new ways to create connections with employees of all levels with member businesses.

GROW

Setting aggressive goals to not only grow membership, but revenue as well with a goal to expand resources to serve these valued members.

IMPACT

In 2024, the LWRBA seeks to be a convener and connector. The Allaince is advocating on the behalf of its members to share issues affecting the Lakewood Ranch business community to provide them with a business-friendly climate to grow.

Most importantly, as the Alliance is approaching its 20th Anniversary, the organization seeks to obtain the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals Certification providing an opportunity to create processes, procedures and metrics to prepare for the next stage of growth as the LWRBA continues to serve the Lakewood Ranch Region.

MEET OUR BOARD

Courtney DePol Manatee County Representative

WHERE IS YOUR HOMETOWN?

I was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. I love being on the water, the fall weather, and the small, historic town feel.

WHAT’S A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU?

This is one of my favorite questions! Whenever I meet new employees, I always ask the same thing! My fun fact is that I know every word to Sir Mix-a-Lot’s rap song “Baby Got Back.” And yes, if you drop a beat, I’ll break out my lyrical flow!

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED?

My father was the hardest worker I ever have known. He was the epitome of the American Dream. With no formal education, he started out as a construction laborer and worked his way up to owning and operating his own successful asphalt company. He always told me, “You quit, you die.” While it’s such a simple statement, it has such profound meaning. He challenged me to work hard, to do whatever it takes, and to never stop growing, learning, and dreaming.

WHERE IS YOUR HOMETOWN?

I was born in Long Island, New York, but moved to Marlton, NJ when I was 5. To be honest, the best thing I can say about where I was born was the proximity to so many major cities.

WHAT’S A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU?

I’ve worked in many industries, including Sales, IT, Non-profits, and started multiple companies and invested in many others.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED?

A true test of your ability to succeed in any endeavor is directly related to the amount of effort you are willing to put forth to ensure you do whatever is necessary to achieve your goal.
