Enhanced online shopping guide provides consumers with more information to make insurance decisions
Insurance policyholders collected an additional $4 million in the first half of the year as a result of assistance provided by the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI). These funds are a result of staff from the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) Office of Consumer Services working with company representatives to resolve consumer complaints. When a complaint leads to increases in the settlement value from an insurance company to their policyholder, the Department considers the increase recovered funds. Funds recovered are from formal complaints regarding life and annuities, property and casualty, and health products. These recovered funds are in addition to the original amounts offered to consumers by their insurance companies. Policyholders are able to file complaints through See Insurance Page 5-A

Alzina’s Kitchen – Our very own “Bayou Mama” to be featured on Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern
A hidden treasure awaits those traveling down a quiet residential street on Bayou Lafourche. However, from the main road, many locals and most tourists would never know it. The metal building’s unassuming nature would not draw your attention. At one time, a sign proudly hung announcing Alzina’s Kitchen. This once welding shop turned kitchen is where Ms. Alzina Toups, (and a few family members who help her out), create mouthwatering dishes that would make a grown man cry. Ms. Alzina gained national notoriety over the years. Articles about the “Bayou Mama” are in the best of the best food and garden magazines such as Southern Living, Country Roads, and more. In 2013, Toups received the prestigious Southern Foodways Keeper of the Flame award. This Queen of the Bayou has an incredible talent for making some of Louisiana’s most notable Cajun dishes. She is about to add another notch to her apron when her cooking perfection appears on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on Tuesday, August 1. In an interview, Zimmern once said, “I’ve tried to cook with her for the last 10 years and it just hasn’t worked out, but I finally got her in a show. I’ve cooked for presidents, I’ve cooked for kings, I’ve cooked for famous chefs with umpteen Michelin stars and I didn’t get nervous—but Alzina was different.” You can read more of the interview at

The roseau cane-killing bug, found in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes about a month ago, is continuing to spread and has now made its way to at least 10 parishes in the southern portions of the state. The roseau cane mealybug, an invasive species from Asia, originally found late last year in Plaquemines Parish, attaches to the root of roseau cane and eventually kills the plant. If the bug continues to spread, the state could permanently lose some of its wetlands, scientists say. “Roseau cane is very hardy and can persist in standing water that is deeper than most other plants can tolerate,” said Michael Massimi, invasive species coordinator with the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program. “It is feared that losing stands of roseau will result in permanent loss of wetlands.” The scale has been spreading so quickly that it is hard for scientists to keep up, Massimi said. Recently the scale was found in various spots in Golden Meadow. See Roseau Page 5-A

Renowned chef, Ms. Alzina Toups, is pictured with Andrew Zimmern of Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel. An episode featuring Ms. Alzina will air on Tuesday, August 1.
http://andrewzimmern.com/2017/01/31/5questions-andrew-zimmern. Alzina’s Kitchen is not a restaurant in the traditional sense of the word. She books only one private party at a time. Her tables provide a quaint gathering place where friends and family can come together and enjoy a fabulous array of dishes. Black-eyed pea jambalaya, shrimp lasagna with homemade pasta, braised pork loin, corn bisque, stuffed chicken, and amaretto yams are among her vast repertoire. Is your mouth watering yet? A gifted soul and devout Catholic, she opened her kitchen doors in 1977 to cook and serve her church for their deanery meetings. Immeasurable numbers of priests, (both local and international), nuns, and bishops have lined her family style table for decades. Renowned French chefs and other notable figures have made their way to her and admired her masterful culinary art. Ms. Alzina’s paternal ancestors came to Louisiana from Nova Scotia. Her mother and father primarily spoke French in the home. See Alzina Page 5-A
