Louisiana and boating, it’s hard to think of one without the other. The words woven and intermingle into the very fabric of life in Lafourche. Used for travel, work, and leisure these vessels have remained a staple in modern time and throughout history. Especially here, given the industry of oil and gas, tugboats, commercial fishing and shrimp trawling. The Center for Traditional Louisiana Boat Building (CTLBB) could not agree more. Incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1979, the Center, located in Lockport, keeps boat building and its history alive. CTLBB offers an interactive approach called Look and Learn. Adults and children alike can learn about boats, which are historically unique to the bayou such as bateauxs, pirogues, skiffs, and other watercraft. The Traditional Maritime Organization provided some insight on the tradition of boat building when they said, “The skills unique to wooden boat building are known to a small and decreasing number of people. It is both an essential part of the regions’ history and economy. If there is no action taken, it is only a matter of time before these skills become extinct.”

I will lead with an open-door policy but with a firm grip and a no-nonsense attitude. See Boudreaux Page 3-A
CTLBB steps in to honor and preserve the art of boat building and the artisans who build them. One of the Center’s boat builders, Ernie Savoie, lives, breathes, and sleeps everything he can about Louisiana boat building and its tradition. See Boats Page 5-A

Qualifying ended Friday for the October 14 primary elections with no one signing up for the Raceland-area District 8 seat on the Lafourche Parish School Board. The board will have to call a special election. The seat opened after Ronald Pere resigned in May because he and his wife were moving to an assisted-living facility outside the Raceland-area district. The School Board appointed former member Raymond Toups as a replacement until the election. The Oct. 14 election will also include races for District 4 Justice of the Peace, Lockport Police Chief and the Greater Lafourche Port Commission’s Division E seat, as well as for state treasurer and public service commissioner. Stacy Hernandez, a notary public from Cut Off, signed up Friday to challenge Martin Wade, a notary public from Galliano, for Lafourche Justice of the Peace in District 4. The former justice, Lois Gautreaux, died last month. Interim Lockport Police Chief David Harrelson Jr. and former Chief Ernest Boudreaux Sr. are running for that office, along with veteran law enforcement officer Chester Douglas. The seat became open after former Chief Warren Vedros Sr. resigned last month after an indictment on eight felony charges. Jimmy “T-Jim” Lafont and Curtis “Tompuss” Pierce are vying for the Greater Lafourche Port Commission’s Division E seat, left vacant after Wilbert Collins Sr. died in May. The board appointed Mike Callais as a replacement until the election. Seven candidates registered to run for Louisiana state treasurer after Republican John Kennedy left the job after his election to the U.S. Senate. The top three contenders, all Republicans, are: Angele Davis, a Baton Rouge business consultant who was a state budget administrator for Govs. Mike Foster and Bobby Jindal; Sen. Neil Riser, a funeral home owner from Caldwell Parish; former Rep. John See Election Page 3-A
