Jasmine and Andrew go together like rosé and The Hamptons—and coincidentally, the couple’s wedding struck similar notes. “We wanted bright, beachy elegance,” Jasmine says. Her only particular mantra when decorating Gurney’s, their venue: Think pink. After an oceanfront reformed Jewish ceremony, the newlyweds snuggled with their puppy and then partied with a live band.

CELEBRATING LOVE FOR ALL It’s hard to believe the legalization of samesex marriage passed just five years ago. To think the inability to marry whom you wanted existed so recently in this country is staggering. And while there’s still much to be done to create equality for all, we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate the anniversary of such a historic moment. Turn to p. 206 to read the touching stories of two couples married the same year as the monumental decision, and what it means to them.

As we go to press, an unprecedented pandemic is impacting our country in ways we’ve never experienced before. Schools and stores are closed, and working from home has become the new normal. Another reality? Canceled weddings. My deepest hope is that by the time this issue hits stands, our world is seemingly back to normal, but I know the repercussions of this will be felt for months. So while we all work to rebuild our way of life, we want you to know that The Knot is here for you via social (@theknot), online (TheKnot.com) and in these pages. Whether you’re forced to reschedule your wedding day or simply feel behind on planning due to weeks of social distancing, we’re here for you. We created the content of these pages before the global pandemic, and we’ll be here when the dust settles too. We’re all in this together.

STYLE

FIND YOUR WEDDING We know—you’re probably wondering where you should even start (totally normal, btw). First, download our app and take our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe, (think: industrial with bohemian details). We’ll generate your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). EDITOR TIP Think about what you love as a couple—are you

homebodies or always looking for an excuse to dress up and hit the dance floor? Your wedding should be a true reflection of who you are, so let your personalities lead your style.

2

ORGANIZED

KEEP Not sure what to do when? Look no further than our totally customizable checklist. If you’re asking your future brother-in-law to officiate, you can cross “find an officiant” off your to-do list. Want to add extra entertainment? No problem. Bonus: Our budgeter will help you track your overall spending. EDITOR TIP Psst, it’s okay to go out of order or to not tick off

every to-do. Really. It’s also totally okay to ask for assistance from your crew or your wedding VIPs—they want to help!

Organizing all those details and a checklist? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

Build yours on The Knot Registry and add items from anywhere you shop with our universal registry tool. That means you don’t have to choose between bespoke Etsy finds and smart home tech from Amazon. Plus, your guests get a one-stop shopping experience—a win-win.

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your inspo-packed vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. Your series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” really looks like.

Dancers, decked out in periodappropriate attire, doubled as live “props” during cocktail hour. “We had one dancer open the door as guests entered the restaurant. The others posed throughout the venue like mannequins. It was so cool to see them,” Amy says.

ASK THE KNOT SQUAD You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. We tapped our team—and one of our go-to industry pros—to solve some of your most of-the-moment planning asks. OUR TAKE I really want a modern, fun invitation suite, but my fiancé is feeling something a bit more classic with calligraphy. Any design tips for picking invites that suit both of our styles? SARAH EVANS

Private vows allow you to express yourselves without an audience.

28

My partner and I are both major introverts— we don’t do PDA and hate being the center of attention—so a traditional ceremony seems really scary to us. Are there ways for us to rethink the structure to fit our personalities?

PRO TAKE

JOVE MEYER

Owner Jove Meyer Events Jove is an NYC-based event designer known for throwing celebrations that take personalization to new heights.

Your wedding ceremony should be true to both of you—that includes reflecting your style, love story and personalities. If you’re both introverts, you could consider a city hall ceremony. This allows you to bring a few friends, keeping things intimate and casual. But, if you go with a city hall wedding, a majority of your loved ones will miss out on your public commitment. As an alternative, rethink the day in a way that pulls the attention away from you. Maybe you could skip walking down a traditional aisle and instead hang out with your guests preceremony. Think: no processing, just getting married where you are, on your terms. You could also walk down the aisle with your partner or ask guests to process to you instead, meeting you, your partner and the officiant at the altar. Starting the ceremony together might make you more comfortable. In the end, the goal of the wedding ceremony is to make your commitment of love in front of those you care about most. This can really take place in whatever form feels most authentic to your relationship.

Marriage is all about collaboration and figuring out how to blend two individual styles. Here’s the good news: When it comes to stationery design, seemingly opposing tastes can actually complement each other nicely and really represent you as a couple. If your fiancé is nonnegotiable on calligraphy, try pairing hand lettering with clean, modern typefaces for a combo that won’t feel too stuffy. Give your suite an energetic vibe by experimenting with color and avoiding any fussy details that might not feel true to your combined style. Letting the script shine as the focal point can feel clean and bold but simple and timeless at the same time. Win, win! We’re trying to settle on a first dance song, but the classics feel too serious. Where can we find a first dance jam to start the party? S H A R LY N P I E R R E Assistant Editor, Research

Check out different radio stations or comb through Spotify, but keep this in mind: As you’re researching, don’t be afraid to explore different genres you might not always find yourself listening to. Try pop, hip-hop or even Afrobeats. If nothing makes you want to strut and shake something, enlist the help of your wedding party and ask for song recs or even a playlist—they’ll know what feels most like you both.

FLOWERS WHAT ARE SOME WAYS COUPLES CAN SAVE ON FLOWERS IF THEIR BUDGET IS TIGHT?

TO P T I P S Don’t be afraid to play with color. Even if it’s muted, it can add visual interest to your décor.

D I S C OV E R BrooklynBlooms.com

46

@brooklynbloomsnyc

HOW CAN COUPLES REPURPOSE FLOWERS FROM THE CEREMONY TO THE RECEPTION? If you have a backdrop for the ceremony, your florist can incorporate it into the reception as a photo booth background or visually engaging backdrop for a sweetheart table.

WHAT FLORAL TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING? I’m excited by the flower industry’s focus on sustainability. Designers are becoming more creative with the mechanics used in arrangements, making way for more creativity. Notably, floral foam is harmful to the environment, so many designers are going back to basics and instead using pin frogs, chicken wire, branches and tape. Our profession is very reliant on the health of the ecosystem and I think the entire floral community is starting to realize that.

WHAT FLOWERS ARE IN YOUR DREAM BOUQUET? I’ve always wanted to be able to forage in an island jungle— with a guide, of course! It may sound a little dangerous, but the thought of creating beauty with only what I can find around me brings me great joy. I want to take what the universe has given me and use it as the inspiration for a striking arrangement. My ideal design would encompass varieties like orchids, palms, protea, bromeliad and heliconia and would be bursting with any native flowers I stumble upon that I’ve possibly never encountered before.

WHAT DO YOU WANT ALL COUPLES TO REMEMBER WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING WITH A FLORIST? Give your pro creative liberty when it comes to creating a design for you. As artists and professionals, florists are at their best when given a vision and the accompanying freedom (and trust) to see it through.

HOW MANY MONTHS IN ADVANCE SHOULD COUPLES BOOK THEIR FLORAL DESIGNER? If you have your heart set on an especially high-demand vendor, look to book them as soon as possible. Generally, as a rule of thumb, I encourage couples to book somewhere between six and eight months out from their wedding day.

WHAT UNIQUE FLOWER PAIRINGS WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE USED MORE FREQUENTLY? Various types of tropical botanicals juxtaposed with foraged wildflowers. For example, I want to pair birds of paradise, parrot tulips and gomphrena together. I love to see the world meet within the context of floral design.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: FELICITY MOMENTS; PETRONELLA PHOTOGRAPHY (2)

OUR PRO LaParis Phillips, floral artist at Brooklyn Blooms in Brooklyn

Wedding party flowers often make up a large portion of a floral budget, but more recently I’ve been booking couples who aren’t planning to even have a wedding party. Forgoing that expense allows couples to splurge elsewhere. Even if you do opt for a wedding party, there are many nonfloral alternatives to wedding party blooms that can help trim your budget.

PLANNING WHAT DIFFERENTIATES MODERN REBEL FROM OTHER NEW YORK-BASED PLANNERS?

OUR PRO Amy Shack Egan, founder and CEO of Modern Rebel, based in Brooklyn

TO P T I P S Let go of your preconceived notions of what a wedding “has to be.”

D I S C OV E R ModernRebelCo.com @modernrebelandco

As a company, we focus on helping couples rewrite the rules. We bring that to every corner of our process—from a no-assumptions approach (we avoid inferences around gender, pronouns and traditions) to the way we handle the design stage. I often get asked to explain our aesthetic. Simply put, it’s reflective of the partnership we’re representing through the wedding. We care as much about the relationships our couples share as we do the event itself. We want the celebration to reflect your relationship, which is the real highlight.

IDEAL BOOKING TIMELINE? 12-15 months out. ADVICE FOR WORKING WITH A PLANNER? Be sure you’re collaborating—working together will ensure everything goes more smoothly. WHAT ARE SOME COMMON BUDGET MISTAKES YOU SEE COUPLES MAKE? It’s important to remember that the number of guests you invite is the biggest determining factor for the overall cost of your wedding. Also, you always need to budget for emergency funds. Beyond covering unexpected expenses, this allocation can be used if you end up adding a vendor to your team that you initially didn’t plan to include.

WHAT’S A WEDDING TREND YOU WISH WOULD GO AWAY?

48

EVENT PLANNER OR DESIGNER? I prefer to identify as relationship-championer.

Wedding trends in general! We advocate for our couples to write their own rules.

WHAT ARE A FEW THINGS COUPLES SHOULD DO IMMEDIATELY AFTER GETTING ENGAGED? First, turn off social media and take some time to be present and soak up the news together. Bask in the reality that you’ve made the decision to spend the rest of your lives together. Next, sign up for premarital counseling. And lastly, write a list of your top three priorities that you want to keep at the forefront of your mind while wedding planning. I recommend your number one priority being: If you feel your relationship suffering, the decision at hand is not that important.

I really want a couple to have a disco ball cake. I think It would add such a cool vibe to a reception. I’ve also gotten excited by live, interactive entertainment like LED robot performers who make an appearance on the dance floor. Anything out of the box and unique that gives more insight into the personality of the couple is thrilling to me when it comes to design.

WHAT’S THE MOST CREATIVE IDEA YOU’VE EVER EXECUTED FOR A WEDDING OR CELEBRATION? For my own wedding, I designed a do-a-favor table in lieu of a traditional favor table. Our guests made cards for kids who were spending the holidays in the hospital. Postwedding, we gave all of the cards to a nonprofit that distributed everything to the children. It was way better than any favor I’ve gotten at a wedding!

THEIR STORY Kylee Tsuru (28 and a senior account executive) and Benjamin (Ben) Siaw (29 and head of sales) got engaged following a helicopter ride above New York City, so it was only fitting that they celebrate their wedding at its pinnacle. The couple welcomed loved ones to the Rainbow Room, located 65 floors above the iconic Rockefeller Center, for a “luxe romance” soiree. Even the couple’s signature cocktail paid homage to their skyscraping story— guests sipped espresso martinis, aptly dubbed “The Fifth Floor Walk-Up.” — HAN NAH N OWAC K

FIRST DANCE Kylee and Ben took a spin around the dance floor as their band serenaded them with “How Long Will I Love You” by Ellie Goulding.

54

LIVE JAMS Kylee and Ben flew in their band, Jessie’s Girls, from Atlanta to serve as entertainment for their reception. CARNIVAL FARE As a late-night snack (and a nod to the city’s abundant food carts) the couple served guests hot dogs and soft pretzels. FLAVOR-PACKED TRIO The inside of the couple’s bloom-clad confection was bursting with three decadent flavors: hazelnut with praline crunch, brown sugar with mini chocolate chips and black cherry.

COLORFUL BLOOMS Amnesia roses, burgundy vanda orchids and oxblood dahlias infused the centerpieces with bold color, while white anemones added a modern contrast. FULL-CIRCLE INSPIRATION A feature in a past issue of The Knot inspired Kylee and Ben’s “dramatic and daring” color palette. THEIR STORY Tina Li (27 and an account executive) and Albert Kim (30 and an environmental geologist) wanted their wedding to highlight their Chinese and Korean cultures, while still feeling modern and chic. To bring their vision to life, the couple needed a venue that would accommodate two hundred guests and three separate wedding ceremonies. The industrial warehouse space they settled on provided exactly the blank slate they were looking for—from there, they layered in neutral shades and earth tones like rust and terra-cotta with pops of marigold and teal for a self-described “chic industrial fall wedding.” — H N

FORAGED FOLIAGE Organic bursts of foraged grasses added a soft touch throughout the industrial space. CULTURAL CELEBRATION “Albert is Korean and I’m Chinese, so it was important for us to incorporate our two cultures throughout our wedding,” says Tina. PYEBAEK CEREMONY During the couple’s Korean service, they were tasked with catching chestnuts thrown by Albert’s parents, a tradition said to foretell their family’s future.

STYLIZED BLOOMS Ikebana-style floral arrangements graced the reception tables. SIP AND BE SEATED Custom cocktail stirrers led guests to their assigned seats. To accompany the stirrers, Tina and Albert purchased keepsake wine glasses from The Knot Shop that guests took home as favors. SUGAR SCULPTURE “We wanted an unconventional cake, almost like a piece of art,” Tina says. Molded white wafer paper gave the one-tier confection its fluid look.

TEA CEREMONY Tina’s family offered the couple words of wisdom during the traditional Chinese tea ceremony.

THEIR STORY Samantha Schwartz (37 and a designer) and Benjamin (Ben) Ment (37 and a producer) selected their wedding date for a very special reason: It was their Bernese Mountain dog, Basket’s, second birthday. As such, they joked that the day was “Basket’s very expensive birthday party.” The other (read: real) theme for the day was “New York, We Love You”—a given for longtime Brooklynites. The duo planned their Catskills event as a sensory experience for guests, focusing on fun for each decision, from the timeline to the lively music. — H N

GOING GREEN While the color palette itself was very green, so were the eco-friendly digital invites. SENSORY SIPS As part of their experiential vision for the day, the couple tapped guests to bartend. On offer were hot toddies and warm apple cider, as well as pour-over coffee. SMOKE SHOW From the moment guests arrived to the cocktail hour (which took place preceremony), drool-worthy scents from open-air catering team Heirloom Fire filled the outdoor space.

THEIR STORY Diana Castillo (36 and an ACD copywriter) and Eric Casthart (37 and a designer and developer) wanted to throw a wedding that was “unmistakably us,” they say. The pair did just that, turning to cinema for inspiration. Their chosen theme, dubbed “wicked garden,” blended the Art Nouveau–inspired set designs seen in the 1977 horror film Suspiria with horticultural moments that nodded to the 1993 film Secret Garden. Their unique color palette of earthy green, burgundy, shades of pink, yellow and blue lent playful personality to their venue—which, fittingly, often doubles as a film and photography space. — H N

SHORE THINGS Show off Connecticut’s finest by incorporating the below flavors, florals and activities into your weeding weekend. BY LOUIS BARAGONA

FRESH BREWS

GUEST GOODIES

Half Full Brewery Founder and Chief Hoptimist: Conor Horrigan

Director of the Connecticut Office of Tourism: Randy Fiveash

“When couples buy local beers for their reception or rehearsal dinner, they’re not only helping to support the community’s agricultural growth, but also getting a drink that’s fresher, which is sure to be a hit with guests.” SIGNATURE SIPS “Hoppy, citrusy beers are quintessentially southern Connecticut, especially our blonde ale, “Bright,” which is full of grapefruit and pale ale notes and low on bitterness. It’s available year-round, but is especially great for enjoying on a boat, on a golf course or doing, well, just about anything else in hot, hazy beach weather.” PAIRING PLAY “We’re big fans of partnering with food trucks to create unique, one-of-a-kind culinary experiences. Pro tip: Food trucks are often flexible with their menus, allowing you to create an especially personal, unique meal. Plus, you can pair dishes with any of our brews, from our peach wheat to our IPA.” HOPPY HACK “Couples should contact a brewery directly to discuss which beers will be available for their event. Oftentimes, the beer that’s available right now might not be around in a few months. If you’ve got a signature cocktail, clue the brewery in, too—they’ll be able to pick a beer to complement it, or they could even incorporate one into the drink.”

HOME GROWN

“Southern Connecticut is filled with maritime history, charming small towns, rich local culture and unspoiled natural treasures.” GIFTING GUIDE “Stock welcome bags with soy candles from CT River Candles, a bottle of wine from Saltwater Farm Vineyard, fresh-baked pastries from Sift Bake Shop and merch from The Two Oh Three.” GET ACTIVE “Bring your guests aboard the Argia in Mystic for a prewedding sunset cruise, host a beach day at duBois Beach or head west and hit the water in a kayak from Downunder Kayak and Surf Shop.” LOCAL CHARM

SWEET TALK Owner and Designer at Ana Parzych Cakes: Ana Parzych COLOR CODE “Our clients love preppy neutrals, like white or ivory, with pops of soft blue or blush and lots of loose greenery.” TRENDY FINISH “Couples are choosing subtle tonal changes, watercolor washes and luxe speckles of gold or silver for their cakes.” FLAVOR FAVES “Our clients love our Tahitian vanilla and toasted almond cake.”

FLOWER POWER EAST COAST STYLE “We see everything from bright, classic weddings filled with hydrangeas, roses, ranunculus and peonies to fall ones packed with dahlias, foliage and grasses. Neutral palettes of ivory and white, along with lush greens, are Connecticut’s signature, but more and more, we’re seeing pops of color like blue, coral, peach and wine.” IN BLOOM “We encourage all our couples to source fresh, seasonal flowers from local farms in the area. Ranunculus, tulips and anemones are grown in greenhouses in the spring. In the summertime, peonies, hydrangeas and the ever-popular dahlias will sprout until the first strong frost.” FAVORITE FLORALS “I once filled a May wedding in Darien with loads of spring blooms. I used tall pear blossoms for a minimal look alongside greenery and unique floral installations.” PRICE PLANS “On average, wedding flowers will cost around $7,000, though there are always ways to spend more or less. Pricing can be very dependent upon the flower varieties selected and décor items needed.”

ALL ABOUT

S TAT I O N E R Y TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR COMPANY. WHAT SETS YOU APART?

OUR PRO Jill Baumeister, owner of jpapers, a bespoke stationery firm in Greenwich, CT

TO P T I P S Make sure to bring your personality into the design process—this will help your printed materials represent you as a couple.

D I S C OV E R jpapers.co

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD A COUPLE LOOK TO BOOK THEIR STATIONER? We like to start working with clients a year out from their wedding if we can—this gives us ample time to evolve the look of their paper suite. Moreover, couples often have a hard time in the beginning with nailing down their guest list—from deciding who to invite, to collecting all the addresses along with the proper honorifics. Booking a stationer early on in the planning process allows for a buffer so clients can make changes to their guest list up until the last minute.

94

@jpapers.studio

After 25 years in the industry, the relationships we have with our clients are especially notable. Since I’ve been able to work with many of our clients multiple times, the close connection we’ve built helps me further personalize my designs. Of course, in addition to being known for our custom wedding invitations, people also love my two cute dogs, Lou and Ruby Tuesday.

WHAT ARE SOME DIFFERENT STYLES OF PRINTING? Engraving is my favorite method of printing—the sharpness of color makes a strong statement on paper. Letterpress is a much softer option and fades into the paper. It’s a style that works great with the watercolor crests that are so popular these days. However, both letterpress and engraving are going to be among your more expensive printing options. Another method is thermography, which is a great choice if you want the print to have a raised feeling, like engraving, but with a more shiny finish. There is also flat printing, which is how we print most watercolor artwork as it bleeds well into the paper. Ultimately, your stationer will be able to help you settle on the printing style that works best for both your budget and your chosen aesthetic.

Nowadays, couples are thinking outside the box. Watercolor artwork, wax seals and vellum overlays are all great ways to dress up a classic invitation suite. We’ve even used wood, Lucite, leather and metal. Using different materials is expensive, but if you’re looking to impress your guests it’s a great place to start. Vintage postage has also really made a comeback and can make an impression from the moment a guest pulls the envelope from their mailbox.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS A COUPLE CAN SAVE ON STATIONERY IF THEY’RE ON A TIGHT BUDGET? Digitally printed cards are a good option if your budget is tight. This printing style allows you to have multiple colors and pieces of artwork on a nice textured paper.

THEIR STORY Nicole Thornton (28 and a nanny) and Peter Baiocco (37 and a partner at a headhunting firm) liked the idea of a destination wedding, but logistics dictated they wed near home. The solution? A saturated color palette of rust, terra-cotta and burgundy that brought their bohemian, desertinspired wedding to life without the plane ride. Bleached leaves, pampas grass and palm fronds reinforced the coastal California vibe while also nodding to their engagement in Big Sur. — HAN NAH N OWAC K

ON A ROLL Nicole and Peter gave a vintage table new life by utilizing it for a cigar-rolling station during cocktail hour. FAR-FLUNG LOCALES Instead of delegating numbers to each table, the pair named them after spots they’ve traveled to together. CLEAR WINNER The couple’s choice of a translucent tent allowed guests to take in the surrounding landscape, but it also caused a small day-of mishap. “Our dance floor was originally grass, but it was scorched by the sunlight refracting through the clear-top tent. We went with a last-minute decision to do a rug dance floor, and it was the best decision we made!”

FALL modern moody

Saying “I do” in autumn is all about embracing the dramatic atmosphere of the season, so concentrate on working with colors that pack on the saturation. Traditional fall shades like inky navy blue and rich burgundy get a very 2020 upgrade with help from of-the-momenthues like coral, mauve and fiery orange. HOW TO USE IT When working with a palette as unexpected as this one, it’s only right to keep the surprises coming. Instead of focusing all the color attention on your tabletops, why not turn to your florals to bring that wow-factor? Painted or dyed botanicals like baby’s breath, feather ferns and dried blooms are a great way to add a dose of unexpected (and other-worldly) color. From there, you can complement the look with a modern mix of signage or paper goods printed on colored paper, a bold menu and seasonal sips.

WINTER icy pastels

There’s no better way to embrace the snowy nature of (most) winter climates than to add a subtle layer of “frost” over all your favorite pastel shades. Slightly whitewashed hues like pale blue and soft lavender still feel lively while not seeming completely out of place for the season. The best part? This pretty palette helps to keep your celebration from skewing too “holiday,” which can often be a struggle in winter. HOW TO USE IT Good news: You’ll be able to find tons of florals in these shades, even during the depths of winter, so that’s a great jumping off point for your palette. From there, layer on extras like table linens, bridal party attire and more to help set the scene. Just keep in mind: You’ll want any fabrics and or textures to uphold a seasonal feel, so opt for heavier-weight materials like wool and velvet over lighter options like silk. WHY IT WORKS

126

SPRING natural retro

This unique combo marries the best of mid-century design with a modern feel totally fit for any of-the-moment celebration. Think of this palette as neutrals-but-better— calming shades like nude and olive green set the foundation for more zesty picks like mustard yellow, coral and soft mint. The end result? A look perfect for a boho, nature-inspired spring soiree. HOW TO USE IT These shades beg to be mixed and matched, so start by decking out your wedding party in looks that range in color, texture and saturation. From there, set the scene at your reception with funky lounge furniture and interesting tablescapes. Don’t shy away from embracing the retro feel of this palette—you’ll be able to find tons of cool couches, chairs and even rugs in shades perfect for your party. Then, bring everything together with an eclectic mix of buds.

SUMMER posh palm springs

West Coast is the best coast—at least when it comes to summer wedding palettes. For a bright and cheery warm-weather bash, look no further than the citrus-inspired shades of colorful Palm Springs. A range of orange, yellow and fuchsia will practically create the party atmosphere for you—plus they’ll all pop amazingly in your photos. HOW TO USE IT When you’re going this bright with your palette, more is more. Look to create photo-ready installations, like paper lanterns or a standout floral wall that doubles as a photo booth backdrop. You can also have some cheeky fun with oranges in this palette by incorporating the real-deal fruit into your decor. Think: blood oranges slices used as a table runner, clementines in your salad appetizer and even orange-blossom buttercream on your cake.

Desirée Adams is the owner of Verve Event Co., based in upstate New York. Alongside her team, she helps couples enjoy planning modern, artful weddings and celebrations.

I always ask my couples what their must-haves are before putting together a budget for them. It all comes down to spending on what will have the biggest impact for your vision.

Although it’s your wedding, you’ll want to still prioritize your guests’ comfort and experience. Knowing they’re happy will help you avoid a lot of stress and anxiety.

For an easy way to personalize your wedding, try picking a signature scent. You can spray it onto your invitations for an added surprise, then diffuse it at your wedding.

I love to see couples move away from the standard white and green color palette toward something more bold, especially if it’s inspired by the season and local flowers.

t’s no secret that wedding food can sometimes feel a little one-note. But if the two of you are

big foodies and looking to create a memorable meal for yourselves and your guests, “good enough” just isn’t going to cut it. While any meal cooked up by a pro catering team is bound to be delicious, you shouldn’t feel, ahem, married to the traditional (and, typically, expected) steak, fish and chicken way of doing things. Instead, use your wedding day menu as means of illustrating the ins and outs of your truly unique love story, with a meal packed with foods that unite your cultures, harken back to your first date or make you feel like you’re at Grandma’s dinner table.

First up is the fun part—daydreaming! When it comes to the big meal, the possibilities are endless, so cast a wide net when gathering inspiration for your menu. For a personalized dinner, think of ways you can tell your story through food (you can explain the deets on your paper menus!). Are you and your partner from two different cultural backgrounds? Serve up traditional eats from both sides for a fusion menu that will have guests feeling like they just hopped on a plane to a different world. If a love for cooking runs in your family, consider compiling a few signature recipes (like Aunt Mary’s mac and cheese or Mom’s chicken tikka masala) and using those as a jumping off point for the day’s spread—most catering teams are willing to adapt a family recipe if you just ask. Or, design a menu that calls to mind your first date at that holein-the-wall taco joint or a memorable trip you took to Italy for your anniversary. Whatever the inspiration, a meal deeply ingrained in your couple history is sure to be a big hit with the hearts—and the stomachs—of your friends and family.

FIND THE RIGHT TEAM Once you’ve settled on your perfect menu, it’s time to find your dream team. If you’ve already chosen a venue that has an in-house catering staff, make an appointment to sit down with the team and talk through your vision. Remember, just because what you’re asking for isn’t “typical” of their client offerings, doesn’t mean they can’t make it happen. Just be prepared to compromise if necessary— there’s a chance your unique asks may up the cost per person from what you were originally quoted, or they may only be able to fulfill a few of your culinary wishes. If you’re hosting your day at a

MARY + YANI

Spam musubi and handheld ahi tuna poke

PUJA + KUNAL

venue that requires you bring in your own catering team, then you’re in luck— this is going to make it easier for you to handpick the crew that can best execute your menu. Our advice? Let your pro do what they do best. Just because you fall in love with the drool-worthy Instagram feed of a local barbecue team, doesn’t mean they’re the right people to pull off your Italian-meets-Asian menu. When in doubt, hire a team within the culinary culture of your choosing—not only will that guarantee you’ll get delicious eats, but you’ll know that there will be less of a risk for day-of surprises that could derail your whole dinner.

SETTLE ON A SERVING STYLE

PICK THE RIGHT RENTALS

SHARE THE MENU DEETS

Traditionally, most wedding meals are served one of three ways—buffet style, where guests get up and serve themselves; family style, where platters of food are placed on each table and passed around like at a dinner party; and plated, where waitstaff will place an individual plate in front of each guest. As you can imagine, all of these options ring in at different price points—but they also boast different vibes too. Once you’ve booked your team and have a general idea of what you’ll be serving, it’s time to think about how you’ll be serving. A casual Tex-Mex menu of tacos, guac and street corn may not necessarily jive with a whiteglove plated dinner, so consider mixing up the service style to better complement the overall feel of your menu. From food stations to a slew of roaming servers, the right combo can take your meal to the next level.

Chances are, you’ve already put a bit of thought into how your reception tables will look—after all, they’ll be the design focal point of your event and are a great way to contribute to the overall energy of your day. If budget allows, think beyond basic linens and white dishware, and explore some truly unique rental options to help your menu come alive. Ask your catering pros to weigh in on what color plates will make your main meal pop, or complement your traditional cultural dinner with accessories suited to that style (think: handmade Moroccan lamps and bespoke napkins to pair with your Middle Eastern menu). One more important thing to note? Specialty plates and utensils! If you’re having an out-ofthe-box meal, chances are your typical place setting won’t suffice. Be sure to rent things like chopsticks, seafood forks, bamboo steamers or whatever else you may need to ensure your dining experience is complete.

At this point, you’ve put a lot of love and care into crafting a menu that feels unique to you and your partner—so you obviously want guests to notice, right? That’s where your paper goods come in. When designing day-of items like your menus or cocktail hour food cards, it’s important to take the time to explain the backstory behind some of your yummy selections. If you’re opting for a seated meal, consider creating a little booklet to walk guests through your love story and what each dish means to you as a couple or to your families’ cultures (this is especially important if the majority of guests will be eating dishes unfamiliar to them). Or, if you’re serving up a lot of family-favorite dishes, include a few of the best recipes in the welcome bags for the weekend so guests can re-create their favorites at home. Whatever you choose, letting guests in on the fun story behind your menu will help tie the whole occasion together seamlessly.

YOU ASKED,

Hey there! I’m LOUIS

BARAGONA ,

community editor at The Knot and the host of our weekly Wedding Wednesdays on Instagram—yep, you knew you

ANSWERED!

recognized this shiny bald head from somewhere. I’m answering your

TOP 10 most common wedding planning questions. Let’s do this!

1

AWKWARD QUESTION: DO I TIP MY VENDORS? WHO? HOW? HELP!

TIPS

MY WEDDING PARTY HAS BEEN SUPER PICKY ABOUT OUTFITS, AND THEY’RE NOT INTO ANYTHING I LIKE. HOW CAN I PLEASE EVERYONE?

2

BECCA DELMAN

DRAMA

Okay, we got this, but remember: You can’t please everyone! I know, I know, groundbreaking stuff here, but if there’s ever a day on which this sentiment should be remembered, it’s your wedding day. You and your partner’s style and preferences should reign supreme for your event. Does that mean you need to rule with an iron fist? Um, no. Instead, think of ways you can compromise with your wedding party without abandoning your vision. Try giving your besties a color swatch and a few rules (aka no sparkle), and let them go wild (subject to veto!).

143

Nothing awkward here, friend. You’re talking to someone who blacks out every time they’re asked to do simple math, so I get it. Who you tip (and what you tip) depends on the vendor in question. Here’s a quick cheat sheet: Caterers, beauty pros, transportation pros and DJs should all get 15 to 20 percent of the total bill amount for their services. If you’re hiring servers, tip them around $20 each (or more), and same goes for musicians. Some pros don’t expect or require tips at all (floral designers, event planners and photographers, for example). When in doubt, head over to our site—TheKnot.com has your back with an extensive tip list.

YOU ASKED, ANSWERED! MY PARENTS ARE DIVORCED, AND IT’S NOT EXACTLY AMICABLE. HOW DO I KEEP THEM FROM STRANGLING EACH OTHER AT MY WEDDING?

DIVORCE

4

I’m sorry you’re in the position of worrying about this. The best thing you can do here is overcommunicate, even when it’s hard. Remind your parents that it’s your day—not theirs—so a peace treaty is necessary. Talk logistics and comfort levels. Can they sit next to each other at the ceremony? What about posing for family photos? Be considerate of their feelings, but not at the expense of your own.

I THINK MY PRO IS GHOSTING ME. WHAT DO I DO? Okay, okay. Before you send off that fiery email, let’s keep one thing in mind: Things happen, and depending on your timeline, your pro might have other clients who are getting married sooner and are getting their attention. If the amount of time is absolutely unreasonable (think: weeks with NO response to emails or calls, but meanwhile they’re still active on Insta), it’s time to check out your contract and begin considering your options. After all, you’re paying your vendors—get your money’s worth.

GHOSTED

144

MY FAMILY IS UNSUPPORTIVE OF MY PARTNER AND ME. CAN WE PLAN A WEDDING WITHOUT THEM? SHOULD WE EVEN INVITE THEM?

FAMILY

6

3

Please know you’re not alone in this. Care for yourself and set firm boundaries. You can plan without your fam, I promise. It may not be easy, but luckily, a chosen family is a special, valid thing too. Lean on your pros, be open with your friends and be honest with your partner. If you think inviting them would take away from the day, listen to your heart. Your day, your way—all the way down to your feelings.

5

WE MET ONLINE, BUT OUR FAM DOESN’T KNOW—AND WE’RE NOT SURE IF OUR WEDDING IS THE TIME OR PLACE FOR US TO GET OUTED. WHAT DO WE DO? You legend, you. I think you first need to ask yourself why exactly you wouldn’t want your family to know that you met via swipe, spark, tap, woof or whatever else I may or may not have done to find love on an app. At this point, you’re probably in the clear—you’re about to seal the deal! If you’re really nervous, give anyone toasting you a heads up, but I say you be honest and tell the story of your appily ever after.

YOU ASKED, ANSWERED! HOW DO I TALK TO MY FIANCÉ ABOUT BUDGET? WE’RE ON TWO DIFFERENT PAGES, AND MONEY DISCUSSIONS ARE SO UNCOMFORTABLE.

BUDGET

8

Uh, I get it—thinking about bills makes me want to cry. Budgets are stressful, but money needs to be something you can discuss openly with your partner. Consider this talk a little practice for your financial future. Bring up your wedding spend in a way that doesn’t feel accusatory, set boundaries (no raised voices, no low blows, etc.) and work together to come up with a list of priorities—costs included.

7

HOW MANY SPEECHES OR TOASTS IS TOO MANY? I’m a sucker for a good toast, but even I can agree there’s such a thing as too many. You don’t want to keep guests from mingling and dancing just to hear the whole wedding party wax poetic about your love. I say you choose a rep from each side (typically an MOH and a best man, but gender is made up, my loves) and allow for parents to toast at their discretion. Somewhere around four to five short (think: around six minutes) toasts feels just fine to me. From there, get the party started.

TOASTS

146

NEITHER OF US WANTS TO WRITE OUR OWN VOWS, BUT WE WANT OUR CEREMONY TO FEEL PERSONAL. ANY IDEAS?

‘I DOS’

10

You’d be shocked by how many people have this same issue. Writer’s block can be a beast, and some of us just aren’t cut out for public declarations of love. Whatever your reason, you could replace traditional vows by reciting a poem you both love, repeating the lyrics to a song that means a lot to you, or taking part in a personalized unity ceremony. (My fave I’ve seen: a guac-making ceremony. *Drools.*)

9

MY ____________ IS CONTROLLING AND WANTS A SAY IN EVERY DECISION. HOW DO I MAKE SURE THIS WEDDING ISN’T THEIR “I DO” TAKE TWO? I’m #TeamCompromise, but to a point. Is this person dictating major choices and expressing disapproval for the details too? Is this turning into a wedding you don’t even recognize? Hard stop. Form a united front with your s/o and talk to this person about the importance of your vision. If they have a financial stake in the game, you might need to make some tough compromises—prioritize accordingly.

The trendiest wedding rings are anything but basic.

You don’t need a giant rock to make a statement. While an engagement ring is an undoubtedly special piece of jewelry, a wedding band is equally meaningful to add into the mix or wear alone. The best part? The bands of the moment are all about letting your personal expression fly high with new shapes, color combinations and textures.

Your guide to

metals

Don’t know the difference between platinum and white gold? No problem! Read up on your options before you select a ring setting.

PLATINUM A rare, natural white metal known for its strength and purity, platinum is usually 95 percent pure. Platinum’s density makes it extremely durable, meaning it will keep your center stone protected and secure. It’s also naturally hypoallergenic, so it won’t irritate sensitive skin. While it is the most expensive of the metals, when platinum scratches, there’s very little metal lost, so your ring will withstand years of wear. Also, since it’s a pure white metal, it won’t cast any tint onto your center stone.

YELLOW GOLD Besides the fact that yellow gold is on trend right now, the pure form of gold has plenty of other appeal too. It’s about as low maintenance as it gets (it’s easier to clean than white or rose gold) and it’s a fairly hypoallergenic metal as well, depending on its karat measurement. Not to mention, it’s typically priced slightly lower than other fine jewelry metals like platinum.

WHITE GOLD Yellow gold is turned into white gold when the surface is plated with rhodium (a white metal). If you want the look of a white metal setting but don’t want to splurge on platinum, white gold is a budget-friendly choice. Though it has a similar resemblance to platinum, it’s more widely available and, therefore, less expensive. If you opt for this metal, keep in mind you may need to have your ring replated in the future. The white rhodium coating may eventually wear away and return the ring to its original yellow color.

EDITOR’S TIP If you fall in love with a ring that isn’t available in your size— say, you’re a woman in love with a men’s band or vice versa—don’t count yourself out. Ask if your jeweler can make your preferred design to fit you. — S H E L L E Y B R O W N senior fashion & beauty editor

A hidden gem is a great alternative if you aren’t into lots of bling.

RO SE GOLD Made popular in 19th-century Imperial Russia, this pink-tinted metal is gold with an added copper alloy. The more copper alloy in the metal, the deeper the rosy tones will be. One of rose gold’s most attractive qualities is its underlying meaning. While white gold represents friendship and yellow gold means fidelity, rose gold symbolizes love.

A S A B E A U T Y E D I T O R A T T H E K N O T, I'll try anything once. Sometimes this is a super perk (hello, fancy facials). Sometimes it’s risky, like the time I went in for trendy highlights and came out a peroxide blonde. For better or for worse, I’ve tested (almost) every buzzy beauty option out there. Here’s the scoop on some of the most popular prewedding treatments, so you can decide what to splurge on—and what to skip.

MICROBLADING

168

W H A T I T I S If you have naturally thin or uneven brows or were an over-plucker like so many of us in the early aughts, this corrective brow treatment could be for you. A more sophisticated take on permanent makeup, microblading is a form of tattooing where hairlike strokes are drawn onto the brow area to resemble the look of your existing brow hairs. The result is a series of naturallooking, fine tattoo “hairs” that will last one to three years. E D I T O R ’ S N O T E S If there’s one big takeaway here, it’s that timing is especially important. Microblading is a process, not a quick fix. I recommend scheduling your first appointment at least 12 weeks before your wedding date. After my initial microblading appointment at Better Brows & Beauty (BetterBrowsNYC.com) in New York City, I had to keep my brows totally dry for a full week while scabs formed—no easy feat if you’re into consistent exercise or showers. Once my scabs fell off, it took another couple of weeks before I could go in for touch ups to perfect the look. While it was a time commitment, it was also a game changer. I've shaved minutes off my morning makeup routine and I never worry about smudging or sweating off my brows anymore. I also feel comfortable without makeup because my face is more symmetrical now—no more cringing at glaring bald patches whenever I catch myself in the mirror.

LASH LIFT W H A T I T I S Swap falsies, extensions and even mascara for this quick curling and darkening treatment that amplifies what you’ve already got. Your lashes are wrapped around small silicone rods and secured with a medical-safe glue, then permed

with a curling solution and tinted (usually with a vegetable dye). It takes around 40 minutes, and the results last up to 12 weeks or the amount of time it takes for a new set of lashes to grow in. E D I T O R ’ S N O T E S Think of this as a substitute for a kick-ass mascara. It dramatically boosts what’s already there but won’t weigh down your lashes or come unglued, as can be the case with falsies and extensions. It also addresses a variety of lash woes (think: straight lashes, lashes that grow downward instead of upward or unruly lashes that stick out in different directions). My lash lift at Glo Skin & Laser in New York City (GloSpaNY.com) only took half an hour, and my annoyingly thick but straight lashes looked amazing for weeks—like, people on the street commenting on how good they looked, good. You should schedule your lash lift a week or so before your wedding in case you have a reaction to the lash dye or curling solution. I had to give up my favorite oil-based cleanser afterward (oil-based products reverse the effects of the treatment) but it was a small price to pay for gorgeous lashes I couldn’t cry or rub off.

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE FACIAL W H A T I T I S If you’ve been hitting the wine or salty snacks to combat wedding planning stress, you could find yourself dealing with a puffy face all of the contouring in the world can’t fix. Enter: your new BFF, the lymphatic drainage facial. A jade roller on steroids, this combination of various massage techniques (including gua sha, acupressure points, and manual lymphatic drainage massage) reduces inflammation by draining excess water and toxins trapped beneath the skin. The result? A contoured face and jawline, lifted and toned cheekbones and a brighter and clearer complexion overall. E D I T O R ’ S N O T E S Extra-dirty martinis are my guilty pleasure, so I’m no stranger to facial puffiness. I booked a lymphatic drainage facial with celebrity facialist Cecilia Wong (CeciliaWongSkincare .com) right around the holidays, when the martinis were flowing and the bloat was real. While part of the treatment was slightly uncomfortable (the massage portion of the facial requires pretty firm pressure to work), my face was noticeably firmer afterwards, especially around my jawline and cheekbones. If you can swing it, book a series of six treatments leading up to your wedding to look your most contoured. Schedule your last one a week or so before your day for a taut complexion that’s extra camera-ready.

W H A T I T I S Microneedling (also called collagen induction therapy if you're fancy) involves a mechanized device that repeatedly punctures the skin with tiny, sterile needles. The treatment creates microscopic "damage" in the skin, which activates your body's wound-healing processes and revs up collagen production. Without getting too technical, an increase in healthy skin cells and collagen can reduce fine lines, scars and hyperpigmentation. E D I T O R ’ S N O T E S I didn’t know exactly what to expect from my microneedling session at Better Brows & Beauty, but it was surprisingly painless. Since I was numbed beforehand, the process felt like using a gritty face scrub. However, there's no

sugarcoating it: Immediately after microneedling, I looked rough. My face was blotchy, bright red and swollen. (You know that scene in Sex and the City where Samantha shows up to Carrie's book party looking like beef carpaccio? It was kind of like that.) Despite the initial shock of how I looked after, there was virtually no downtime—I even wore makeup the next day without any residual irritation. My skin started to peel about four days after my appointment, but was back to normal within a week. In the weeks following my microneedling treatment, there was a remarkable improvement in my skin. The treatment faded the hyperpigmentation on my top lip, my overall complexion was smoother and my pores even seemed smaller. Coworkers commented I look "refreshed" and a friend even asked what I'd done to amp up my skincare routine. Bottom line: Whether you want to correct severe skin issues in the months leading up to your wedding or just boost your glow with a one-and-done approach, this is one Instagram trend worth investing in.

W H A T I T I S There’s no shortage of peels out there, but the SkinCeuticals Smart TCA System (SkinCeuticals.com) is especially potent. Applied in layers, this higher concentration of glycolic acid and trichloroacetic acid deeply penetrates the skin in just 30 minutes, stimulating collagen and solving a myriad of skin issues like fine lines, acne, discoloration and scarring. E D I T O R ’ S N O T E S I’ve done tons of at-home peels but the SkinCeuticals Smart TCA System was the real deal. After the first layer of chemicals was applied, I could only feel a slight tingling, but once the second and then third layer kicked in, the stinging was squirming-in-my-chair levels of intense. Afterwards, my skin was bright red and felt hot to the touch. In the week that followed, my entire face peeled off in large sheets (lovely visual, I know). While you can wear makeup immediately after, I decided to forgo the cover-up and let my skin slough off without any poreclogging interference. Within 10 days, all the dead skin peeled off to reveal a much dewier complexion, but I was disappointed to discover my sun spots and fine lines remained intact. My results weren’t as dramatic as I expected, so if you’re looking to totally overhaul your skin, plan to get a few peels in the months leading up to your day. Give yourself at least two weeks between treatments to bounce back, especially if you have sensitive skin.

BOTULINUM TOXIN W H A T I T I S Commonly referred to as Botox (Botox is actually a brand name of one of the most popular versions of botulinum toxin), this injectable also goes by the name Dysport and Xeomin. When used for antiaging purposes, it smooths out wrinkles caused by the repetitive activity of the facial muscles. Once injected into the face, it blocks the transmission of nerve signals, causing the facial muscles at the injection site to relax. E D I T O R ’ S N O T E S While it’s easy to find injectables these days, it’s still important to go to an experienced professional (plastic surgeons and dermatologists tend to be best) who can inject you safely. I did my research and went to celebrity dermatologist Lisa Airan in New York City (DrLisaAiran.com). I was a little

nervous about sticking needles in my face, but she worked as quickly and as painlessly as possible while injecting my forehead and crow’s feet, which helped to put my mind at ease. Botox takes about three days to kick in, and I didn’t feel the full effects for about a week. After that, I noticed I had less movement in my forehead, my fine lines had disappeared and my brows even appeared slightly lifted. I looked, in a word, younger. The results lasted for three months. If you go under the needle before your “I dos,” make sure you still have some movement in your face— otherwise, you could end up looking emotionless in photos.

DERMAL FILLER W H A T I T I S Similar to botulinum toxin, dermal fillers go by many names. Some popular ones are: Restylane, Juvéderm and Sculptra. And while this trendy procedure may conjure images of pouty-lipped Instagram celebrities, it can also help stave off the aging process—for a little while. Once injected into the face, filler (hyaluronic acid is the most popular kind) sits under the skin, plumping up hollow areas and smoothing wrinkles. E D I T O R ’ S N O T E S This is not for the faint of heart, but it sure is effective. While luscious lips have never been on my wish list, the areas under my eyes have always been hollow, making me look permanently tired. The big downside to this particular issue is that no eye cream can fix it, so I took the plunge and got my under eyes injected with filler by Dr. Konstantin Vasyukevich, a plastic surgeon in New York City (FacialArtistryMD.com). It was pretty painful (the skin around your eyes is very sensitive) and I was bruised and swollen at the injection sites for a week. But after the swelling went down, my results were nothing short of amazing. I looked instantly well-rested. The only drawback? Filler lasts for just six months, so the gorgeous effects were only temporary. Pro tip: Get filler around four months before your day so you won’t look less refreshed at your prewedding events.

PASTEL PURPLE

Move over, millennial pink: A new hue is all the rage where wedding party dressing is concerned. Pastel shades of purple such as lilac, lavender and periwinkle are popping up in almost every bridesmaid dress collection. Due to its associations with nature, pastel purple works especially well for rustic or garden weddings. If you’re in the market for an ultra-modern look, take a cue from the red carpet set and opt for a chic halter neckline. But don’t think this style is just for warmer months; you can also pair it with a wrap once the temperature drops. Pro tip: This silhouette is an excellent choice for your friends with larger chests. FLUTTER SLEEVES

Dresses with sleeves have been hot for a while, but we love this romantic twist on an established trend for a few reasons: It adds flair to simpler silhouettes, it offers extra coverage if your girls don’t want to show their upper arms and it’s a perfect option if you’re looking for more modest wedding party looks. Flutter sleeves are made to move, so if you choose this style, stick to dresses in lightweight fabrics like chiffon or silk with minimal embellishments that won’t weigh them down. Birdcage

Also known as a cage, this shorter style covers and frames just your face for a more minimalist statement. Most often it’s made out of wide net or sheer tulle—something you’ll easily be able to see through—and finished with whimsical accents like feathers, flowers or pearls. The trick to pulling off this less traditional look is to let the edge of the veil fall just below the nose. P A I R I T W I T H Cage veils were the height of fashion in the ’40s and ’50s, so that makes them the perfect match for retro-inspired dresses like swingy, tea-length gowns, structured sheaths and slinky, old-Hollywood-inspired slip dresses. They’re also a fun way to add a touch of vintage glam to a suit or jumpsuit.

182

Finger tip

One of the most popular lengths (even Kate Middleton sidestepped royal tradition and chose this shorter option), this veil falls below the hips and extends to—you guessed it—the fingertips. Secure this style, which is usually made up of several layers of tulle or netting, at the crown of your head, slightly behind it or, if your hair is up, just above your updo. P A I R I T W I T H This versatile veil is beautiful with a wide range of dresses, but it looks particularly pretty with ball gowns and, since it puts the focus on the torso, dresses with more elaborate bodices. You may also want to consider pairing it with a cathedral- or chapel-length veil—that way you can remove the longer one for the reception and leave the shorter top layer in place.

Juliet Cap

Inspired by the fashion of the 16th century, this unique veil is making a comeback thanks to its pretty, old-world feel. This über-romantic style is typically made of sheer tulle or tulle with a lace-embellished edge. There are two ways to work it: You can either take a lace-trimmed veil and wear it as a cap, with the sides pinned back behind each ear, or attach a veil of your choosing to a separate cap. P A I R I T W I T H It’s perfect for a lacy gown with a vintageinspired feel or a simple slip dress with lace details. Add fresh blooms behind one ear for an extrasweet effect.

Elbow

Slightly shorter than fingertip, this veil extends 25 inches in length to the bride’s elbows. The more manageable length tends to be more versatile. It’s a nice complement to a simple silhouette, but it also won’t overpower a more showstopping gown. P A I R I T W I T H One of the best things about this veil is you can pair it with just about any style. The elbow length is also perfect for brides who want the look of a longer veil but have a gown with details on the lower half (like intricate buttons, lace appliqués or ruffles) they don’t want to cover up.

Mantilla

A chapel veil works best with a dress with a train

This Spanish-style veil almost always comes in either all lace or in tulle that features a wide, intricate lace edge. It should be positioned two inches from your hairline so its circular shape gracefully drapes down and frames your face on either side. For the traditional look, attach it with an ornamental comb (also called a peineta), or edge it up with a fresh flower crown or crystal tiara. P A I R I T W I T H Allow the dramatic lace to take center stage and pair this romantic veil with sleek silhouettes that won’t compete with its shape. Skip the heavy embellishments as well and opt for a gown with small touches of matching lace instead.

Flyaway

A wispy, multilayered style that just brushes the shoulders, it’s considered less formal than other options. As the name suggests, the tulle used in this kind of veil usually has a stiffer quality that causes it to “fly away” from the to-be-wed, adding poufy volume to the top of the head. P A I R I T W I T H Due to its short and sweet feel, a flyaway veil works well with shorter, more casual dresses. If your gown is heavily embellished or has a sexy, plunging back, this simple style is also the perfect way to wear a veil without obscuring the details you love.

Chapel

184

Typically 90-inches long, this is a formal veil that extends to the floor, falling two-and-a-half yards from the headpiece. It should sweep the floor, extending slightly past your gown. P A I R I T W I T H This simple style is often worn in combination with a sweep train (a veil that just brushes the floor) and blusher for extra oomph. It works with most dress silhouettes and styles but is particularly stunning when layered over a flowy or multilayered gown with a train. If you’re forgoing a train, a chapel veil can add drama without the weight or the hassle—no bustle required.

Waltz

WHETHER YOUR HAIR WILL BE DOWN AND FLOWING OR IN A FORMAL UPDO, YOU WANT A FINAL DETAIL TO TIE YOUR WHOLE LOOK TOGETHER. IF A VEIL ISN’T FOR YOU, THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER OPTIONS, FROM JEWELED HEADBANDS AND TIARAS TO A BOHEMIAN FLORAL WREATH OR FLIRTY FASCINATOR.

NYTKRFW20_Sect_18_(181_187).indd 184

Also sometimes called a ballet veil, this style falls between the knee and the ankle and is usually double layered and worn with a blusher. These veils exude elegance and formality and, because they don’t touch the floor, they’re short enough for a bride to comfortably walk and even dance in—hence the name. P A I R I T W I T H This style pairs well with formal floor-length gowns, like A-line and mermaid silhouettes, and dresses without trains.

Blusher

A blusher actually refers to the short, single layer of tulle, lace or netting that’s worn over the face and then flipped over the head or removed after you walk down the aisle. It comes in chin, shoulder or fingertip length and can be added to a variety of veil styles. But a blusher can also stand on its own. Choose one layer, or if that’s too simple, try a double-tiered style where you have two layers of tulle: one layer pulled over the face and the other draped behind your head. Whichever length or however many layers you choose, the veil should be fastened to the crown of your head. P A I R I T W I T H A universal style, the blusher works with almost any type of gown. Wearing just the short layer gives off a chic, sophisticated air that lends itself to more fashion-forward dresses.

Channel your inner royal with this dramatic option

Cathedral

186

Looking to make an entrance? This is the style for you. The mother of all veils, the cathedral is also the most formal. Sometimes referred to as the “royal veil”—it’s the veil of choice for countless members of the British royal family, including Diana and Meghan Markle—this style typically falls about three-and-a-half yards from the headpiece and is often worn in combination with a blusher and a gown with a long train. It’s an especially great option if your ceremony venue has a long aisle to walk down. P A I R I T W I T H The sweeping cathedral can hold its own next to even the most overthe-top ball gown. As a rule of thumb, the veil should extend past the train, so if you choose a cathedral veil, opt for a cathedralor semi-cathedral-length train.

BE PREPARED

Designer Loft Bridal is a bridal salon in New York City. It offers a wide variety of wedding dresses and accessories, as well as an extensive collection of size-inclusive gowns.

Your gown and veil should be in harmony. For example, a lightweight dress works well with a veil that also feels airy, whereas a ball gown may require a more dramatic style.

If your dress has a train and you’re planning to wear a floor-length veil, make sure the veil extends far past the edge of your dress—you don’t want the veil and train competing.

If you’re going to wear your veil for the ceremony only, it’s a fun idea to swap in some pretty headpieces like embellished hair combs or clips for your reception look.

Have a portable steamer on hand the morning of your wedding to steam your veil—they tend to be more delicate than dresses and need to be steamed each time they are transported.

OUNTDOWN There’s so much to do to plan your wedding— who’s got time to think of beauty? We do! Here’s your guide to looking fabulous in time for your day.

HERE’S THE DEAL:

START HERE!

The average engagement is just over a year. That gives you plenty of time to look like the best version of yourself before you walk down the aisle. Whether you’ve got major plans (adding six inches to your mane and overhauling your entire skin care regimen) or you just want to get your nails in shape and achieve an overall glow, it can be done— even while juggling all your other wedding to-dos. Follow our foolproof timeline to keep your beauty routine on track in the weeks and months leading up to your wedding.

5-6 MONTHS BEFORE

NYTKRFW20_Sect_19_(188_190).indd 188

Begin a stress-relief regimen. Reserve at least one night a week for some nonwedding fun or quiet time to regroup.

Want to grow out your hair or try a new color or cut? Talk to your stylist and start experimenting now.

Get serious about skin care: Begin a good cleansing and moisturizing program, and consider consulting a dermatologist or making appointments for monthly facials. TRY TH I S Goat Milk moisturizing cream, $50 for 1 oz., KateSomerville.com

1 WEEK BEFORE

3-4 MONTHS BEFORE If you don’t plan on using your regular hairstylist, schedule trials with potential candidates. Take pictures of hairstyles you like, as well as pictures of your veil or headpiece (if you have them). If you have your heart set on an updo, discuss with your stylist how long it will take to grow out your hair so it’s the right length for your desired look.

What you put in your body shows up on your face. Examine your eating habits, but don’t crash diet. Instead, stick to specific goals, like incorporating more whole grains and fruits and veggies into every meal.

Have consultations with potential makeup artists. Take pictures, then analyze them. Do your favorite features stand out? Do you still look like you?

Decide on a hair and makeup team and book them for your wedding date. Set up a day-of wedding schedule for yourself and your attendants.

GETTING CLOSER!

1-2 MONTHS BEFORE See your hairstylist for a trial run of potential ’dos. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Be vocal (but polite) about any tweaks you’d like to make.

Considering a faux glow? Now’s the time to test self-tanners or a spray tan. Think about the neckline of your dress, and whether you have tan lines to cover. TRY TH I S James Read Fool Proof bronzing mousse, $23, BlueMercury.com

Studies show exercise can reduce stress. Jump-start your fitness routine with a trainer or consider yoga; the postures build lean muscle and are great tension relievers. You’ll feel better overall—no matter what challenges wedding planning throws your way.

Try to avoid overindulging in the bubbly at prewedding parties—too much alcohol can lead to dehydration and disrupted sleep.

Get a final facial. Don’t do this any closer to your wedding date— give your skin time to bounce back from any irritation.

Splurge on a spa treatment like a massage, full-body scrub or some infrared sauna time. You deserve it.

Get a bikini wax and a final eyebrow shaping. Resist the temptation to try a new, fancy place and go to your regular waxer.

Confirm your wedding day beauty appointments. If you’re getting ready in a wedding suite, start figuring out the logistics for you and your attendants.

Exfoliate and moisturize your whole body. And, if you haven’t tried detoxifying dry brushing before, there’s no time like the present.

Meet with your makeup artist for a trial run. Take note of the lipstick and concealer your artist uses and buy them for touchups. If you’re not hiring a pro, get a makeup tutorial at a department store and purchase the products you need so you have time to practice.

Remember to eat right. Load up on fruits and veggies, and nix the salt and junk. Drink lots of water to help keep your skin clear and glowing.

ON YOUR WEDDING DAY Wash and style your hair for the rehearsal dinner—if you’re having one—and make sure to go superlight on conditioner so your locks don’t feel greasy the morning of.

Remember to fuel up with a healthy, protein-rich breakfast. It will keep you energized for the long day ahead.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Get your hair and makeup done. Wear a robe or button-down shirt (one that matches the color of your gown, if possible, to get the right makeup color application) that can be easily removed.

Get your final haircut or trim. If you dye your hair, get a touch-up. No experimenting here—just stick to the look you love.

Cut down on beverages that stain teeth, like tea and coffee, and try a whitening toothpaste. You may also want to consider a bleaching treatment by a dentist, or use an over-thecounter whitening system.

hat differentiates Bindle & Keep from other suiting companies or tailors? Bindle & Keep is by appointment

only, and we schedule two-hour windows for first fittings. This allows us to really get to know our clients before we measure them. We give our clients the time and space to express what they think will make them feel empowered. We’re also a body-positive company—without exception. We hope that doesn’t differentiate us, but we know that it’s not uncommon for tailors to have certain practices that make clients feel uncomfortable. For instance, some tailors charge based on how many yards of fabric they need in order to make a garment. Due to this, we’ve had clients who come in expecting us to charge them more for their suits because of their size; but that’s not something we do here. We understand OUR EXPERT that people have different bodies and different Rae Angelo Tutera is experiences in their bodies, but we don’t charge an LGBTQ+ advocate them differently for it. and partner at Bindle & Keep, a bespoke suiting company based out of Brooklyn, New York.

masculinizing or even neutralizing, we can do that. conditioned to think of suiting (like most things) We find our clients generally haven’t experienced in a binary way, so when clients come to us, they @raeangelotutera a garment that has an awareness of their body often still think of suiting in terms of ‘men’s’ (or and their presentation, and it can be comforting masculine) and ‘women’s’ (or feminine) suits. when they begin to understand that they control how their suit Because of this, the first step in our process is to basically will look and feel; it can actually help counteract some of the reprogram our clients’ way of thinking so we can retire the harm that’s been done to folks through our heteronormative myth that there are only two kinds of suits. culture and its corresponding retail spaces.

192

How can the suiting process be different for someone who isn’t cisgender? It’s common for trans folks to have less experience

with suiting than cis folks. Retail spaces in general don’t make people of trans experience feel comfortable or welcome; it’s hard to trust the suits will do our bodies and genders justice— and worse, it’s hard to trust salespeople. We try to make our clients feel as comfortable and welcome as possible, and we make sure they know they can trust us with their bodies and their stories. There are a lot of things that can be done to help trans folks feel more at ease when they arrive for their first fitting. Many of our clients include their pronouns in their emails when they’re scheduling their fittings, so we make sure we use them. We are also mindful while measuring people’s bodies. Being measured is not the most comfortable thing for anyone—cis or trans—but we narrate what we’re doing, explain why we’re doing it, and make sure we’re both sensitive and efficient. We’ve also learned how to take measurements that make our garments perform the way our clients want them to, so if we have a client who says they want their suit to be feminizing or

TIME IT RIGHT

Similar to wedding dress shopping, the custom suiting process comes with its own unique timeline. Here’s what to expect.

NYTKRFW20_Sect_19_(191_195).indd 192

How far in advance should to-be-weds start shopping for a custom suit? We encourage clients to come to us about four

months before their wedding. After your first fitting, we’ll place your order. About 10 to 11 weeks later, we’ll invite you back for a second fitting, where you’ll try on your suit for the first time. More often than not, there are alterations required to get the perfect fit, which can add approximately a week or two to the whole process. Any tips on how to keep the process as stress-free as possible?

Folks need to be patient in order to have a bespoke suit made, given the turnaround is 10 to 11 weeks. That said, we suggest that you don’t schedule your first fitting too far in advance of your wedding date. Sometimes when clients come in, say, a year in advance of their day, they end up being worried that their body or their taste will change in the time that elapses between their first fitting and their wedding. It’s important to give yourself enough time to have your suit made and altered before you get married—but not too much time.

WHEN YOU GET SOMETHING BESP OKE , YOU BUILD A R E L AT I O N S H I P W I T H A TA I LO R . T H E L I F E T I M E O F T H E S U I T. What can people expect to spend on a bespoke suit? Keep in mind that a bespoke garment is an investment: Our first tier is $895 for a custom suit, and ordering a vest adds an additional $298 to the total. Sometimes clients also don’t realize that getting a custom suit can make the imperfections in their offthe-rack dress shirts more obvious—for instance, when a jacket fits impeccably, it will make a collar look even looser than usual, or shirt sleeves look even longer than before. Typically, a custom shirt adds at least $155 to the total. That said, we don’t charge for alterations. Wedding dresses are notorious for having expensive alteration processes, so most folks expect to navigate the same thing with custom suits.

194

How can those with a smaller budget minimize the cost of going custom? A contemporary look for weddings is to wear

a beautiful jacket with more neutral pants. If to-be-weds operating on a budget happen to own a pair of black or navy dress pants they love, they can then have a jacket custom made (starting at $596). Another contemporary look, especially now that so many people are having weddings set in the country, is to skip the jacket altogether and just wear a beautiful custom vest (ours start at $298). For folks who find that they have fairly good luck with offthe-rack suits, alterations are the key to making the garments look really polished. For example, you can get a suit on ASOS for about $200, and they have plus-size fits too. When you may not live near a store you feel comfortable browsing in, consider ordering suits in several sizes and trying them on in the privacy of your own home. If you don’t have a tailor, ask a friend—it’s likely they know someone they trust. What’s the best way to navigate physical changes (top surgery, weight loss or hormone replacement therapy) when choosing wedding attire? I can speak from personal experience here—

I was measured for my first suit before I had top surgery. What I learned from being measured with a binder before top surgery is that I actually got the same measurement pre-op wearing a binder as I did post-op. Therefore, compressing the chest can be helpful for taking measurements when someone is pre-op. Even though I felt like the measurements would change dramatically after top surgery, they didn’t.

1 M O N T H O U T Second fitting. Try on your suit or tux and discuss any additional alterations with your tailor.

NYTKRFW20_Sect_19_(191_195).indd 194

When folks go on hormone replacement therapy, or gain or lose a significant amount of weight, it’s hard to anticipate exactly how their bodies will change, and exactly how their experiences in their bodies will change. We remind clients that we can only measure the body they have. That said, we understand that bodies shift—it’s part of being human— and we’ve learned how to anticipate shifts. We’ve learned a lot about how to construct our garments to make them as adaptable as possible, and our seamstress is extraordinarily talented when it comes to doing alterations. In terms of weight gain or loss, we can usually only work within a 15-pound margin. We suggest that to-be-weds get their wedding attire as close to their wedding as possible, that way their garments will be aligned with their bodies. What are the pros of going bespoke versus buying off the rack? Are there any pros specifically for trans or nonbinary folks?

Some people do have good luck with off-the-rack suiting, but many find themselves feeling limited—or worse, unseen by the options they come across in the retail landscape. Generally speaking, off-the-rack men’s suiting is hypermasculine and off-the-rack women’s suiting is hyper-feminine. Even if folks shopping in that landscape do feel like these suiting options make sense for their genders, it’s rare that they actually fit. We have no control over how narrow or wide the shoulders of off-the-rack suits are. If the shoulders are too narrow, the wearer feels trapped; if the shoulders are too broad, the wearer’s shoulders end up looking sloped because there’s nothing to hold up the edges of the jacket. When you get something bespoke, you build a relationship with your tailor. Whenever your body or your tastes shift, you can reach out to us to let us know. We alter our suits for the lifetime of the suit. Therefore, a bespoke suit often has a longer lifetime than an off-the-rack suit. What are some ways to personalize a suit or tux? Our clients design their whole suit, from macro-decisions, like the fabric it’s made from, to micro-decisions, like the color of the piping that separates the lining from the fabric of the jacket. We also offer monograms on custom shirts, and something sweet that people do is get their wedding date embroidered on their cuffs. Some folks will opt for a traditional tux, but will mix it up with bright colors (rather than classic black or blue) or will add a velvet jacket. A lot of clients bring in fabric from a family member’s wedding dress or a loved one’s handkerchief and ask that we sew it into their jacket as a tribute—that’s my favorite way to add a personal touch.

MARRIAGE EQUALITY BY THE NUMBERS

Five years after the US Supreme Court’s monumental decision to make marriage equality the law of the land, two of our real couples look back. BY LOUIS BARAGONA

JOHN CHENG + PAUL CRAYTHORNE

2004

SEPTEMBER 17 | NEW YORK + ATLANTA “By the time marriage equality passed, we were already well into our wedding planning,” John says. “We deliberately chose to get married in New York City—not only because we both love it, but also because gay marriage was legal in New York state and we live in the South. Once marriage equality passed nationwide, our preparations took on a much more celebratory feel. We had that giddy sense of anticipation that you get between Thanksgiving and Christmas or on the day before you start vacation. Our wedding went from a necessary expense in order to get the protections afforded to legal marriage to the happy expense of a destination wedding.”

“The day of the Supreme Court’s decision, we were so happy and overwhelmed with joy—though we were already married in our eyes, it was still emotional,” Nichole says. “I remember Kelli couldn’t wait to get to the DMV to finally change her last name on her driver’s license—and we celebrated by doing exactly that. Though the decision didn’t change or affect our relationship directly, it was an amazing feeling to finally be recognized as equals. We’re just happy and proud to have been alive to witness marriage equality nationwide, and since then, we’ve seen same-sex couples gain more acceptance in society. We even notice more and more same-sex couples represented on TV.”
