EDITOR ’S NOTE

your day, your way When my husband, Mickey, and I tied the knot in St. Louis (my hometown), we wanted to include a subtle nod to New York City too—after all, it was the place we met and where we planned to continue building our life together. So we asked our baker to incorporate both city skylines into the design of our cake—it was “us” and the perfect way to honor our future. At The Knot, we’re less about following rules and all about making it your own. From spins on classic wedding rituals to totally unexpected wedding venues (like a circus—really!) and inventive ways to honor two different cultures in one epic party, we’ve got lots of ideas to help you make your wedding day a true reflection of who you are as a couple. You’ll likely receive lots of unsolicited advice while planning—they mean well—but at the end of the day, this is a celebration of your unique love story. You have our full support to do it your way.

Organizing all those details and to-dos? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

18

PHOTOGRAPHY BY YUNHEE KIM

FIND YOUR WEDDING STYLE We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). KEEP ORGANIZED Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. COMPILE YOUR TEAM After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad with personalized recs. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros, plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. MANAGE YOUR REGISTRY Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather have money to put toward things like your honeymoon or a home down payment, start your cash registry on The Knot. THINK OF YOUR GUESTS Your wedding website is going to be your new BFF. Fill it with need-toknow info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs on it too. And speaking of guests, make sure they download The Guest—a photo sharing app that will sync all of their photos in one place (it’s like a free wedding album you can see in real time!).

plan your wedding on your phone

GET YOUR DAY-OF TIMELINE As you check off to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed day-of timeline. Share it with your pros, wedding party and VIPs. This way, everyone knows when it’s all going down, and you can focus on enjoying some champagne and having a blast with your people. >>

PERFECT YOUR COLOR PALET TE Check out the colors that match your wedding style. And not to worry—you can always change them up as you plan.

GET PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS We’ll take your quiz answers and match you with vendors based on your location, style and budget— starting with your venue.

CREATE YOUR VISION All that swiping will leave you with tons of inspo, which you can add to anytime. Plus, there’s space for custom must-haves (think: late-night taco truck, a dog-friendly ceremony or room for a sangeet).

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. A series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” looks like.

THE DETAILS

The guys tied the knot on August 2, 2018, at Denver’s ninth annual Burger Battle, which the couple has been attending for years.

THE COUPLE Noah Slauson (35 and a realtor) and Sean Precious (38 and a superintendent) are Denver residents— and burger lovers.

guy,” Noah says, “and I’m the Burger Battle guy.” The two invited 90 guests to partake in the event, using the VIP section for their festivities. THE SETTING They said their vows at Tivoli Quad Park. “The historic Tivoli building was a jaw-dropping backdrop,” Noah says. Guests sampled creations competing for one prize: “the best burger in Colorado.”

FRIENDS & FAVORS

Not only did Noah and Sean provide friends with colorful fans to beat the August heat, but they also made sure that TUMS were available.

THE MARRIAGE LICENSE

After feeling legally excluded from marriage for so long, Noah and Sean asked guests to celebrate their union by signing an oversize marriage license, which they’ve since framed. “I look at it every day, and it makes me so happy,” Noah says.

How can I tell if prospective vendors are LGBTQ+ friendly? BRIT TNY DRYE: No one wants to have that conversation of, “By the way, I’m a woman marrying a woman—are you cool with that?” It’s uncomfortable to feel like you have to “out” yourself every time you talk to a vendor. To avoid the awkward (and possibly heartbreaking) convo, there are ways to determine if a pro is equality minded before even sending an email. While some sites clearly state their delight in working with everyone, others may not be as clear. This is where you’ll need to do a deep dive into their online presence: Does their website have images of LGBTQ+ couples? Do they use gender-neutral language? Do their social accounts celebrate LGBTQ+ marriage? (Pro tip: Go back to June 2015 to see if they posted about the marriage equality win.) You can also see if they’re a preferred vendor, have had work featured on equality-minded sites like Love Inc. or even include badges such as the one from The Knot. ST YLE

FA S H I O N

I’ll be flying with my wedding dress— what are some good travel tips? HARMONY WALTON: Always carry it on. And add a few layers of protection, like tissue, between your gown and the garment bag. Before you board, check airline sites for your options. Some have closets where you can hang it, but you may need to lay it in the overhead. Don’t stress—simply steam it once you arrive. As a rule, never check anything you can’t live without on your wedding day.

23%

OF COUPLES MARRIED AT LEAST 200 MILES AWAY FROM HOME

What are some fresh color palettes for Indian weddings? SHAWNA GOHEL: This depends on your aesthetic, but I love a look that leans toward saturated glamour. Since Indian weddings are bright, energetic celebrations, vibrant palettes tend to work best. Some of my favorite hues for weddings include jewel-toned combinations such as saffron and plum, peacock blue and silver, or crimson and gold. >>

ADVICE PLANNING

I’m really close to my brother and would love to have him in my wedding party, but does he have to stand on my fiancé’s side? LOUIS BAR AGONA: As tradition takes a backseat to personalization and preference, so should some of the more unnecessary confines of gendered practices. You love your brother, so why put him anywhere else but by your side? More couples are mixing things up with their wedding parties as a testament to the modernization of roles and the creation of totally new traditions. Whether it’s a groom’s female best friend, a relative who identifies as non-binary or a wedding without any gender roles, your setup shouldn’t come down to choosing historically assigned sides. Make your day about what’s best for you as a couple, whether that means your brother is standing on the “bridal side,” aka the left, or simply forgoing and just surrounding yourselves with your people.

What kind of undergarments should I plan to wear to my dress fitting? MARK INGR AM: Try to wear the same undergarments you’ll be wearing on your actual wedding day. Many gowns today have a built-in corset and bust cups (or they can be easily added) so an additional bra is not required. Your undergarment needs will also depend on your body type, and the fabrication and structure of your gown. Ask your consultant for their recommendation before purchasing any added pieces.

remind your guests to stay present with an on-theme sign

RECEPTION

How do I tell my guests I want to have an unplugged ceremony? MARY CHATMAN: A simple note on your wedding website and a small, concise sign advising guests that you’re having an unplugged wedding should suffice. Say something like, “We want our friends and family to be present at our ceremony, so we ask that you put away all cameras and cell phones. We’ve hired an amazing photographer, so don’t worry—this memory will be captured, and we can’t wait to share the photos with you.” It gets the point across without cell phone shaming.

ETIQUETTE

25%

OF COUPLES ASKED GUESTS TO POCKET THEIR PHONES FOR THE CEREMONY

I’ve heard I have a year to send out thank-you notes—is this true? LAUREN K AY: You should try to share your gratitude as soon as possible. For any gifts received before the wedding, thank-yous should be mailed out within two weeks. For those received on or after your wedding day, aim for a two- to three-month turnaround. Guests want to know you received their gift, and you don’t want to risk forgetting to pen a note altogether. If you’re coming up on your first anniversary and have outstanding notes, get writing. It’s never too late to show your appreciation.

Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and wear a little more makeup than your usual look. It is not every day that you get married. Lastly, go for the lashes, they really are the cherry on top! We promise you won’t regret it when you get your professional photos back. The Mooi Team Mooi Makeup and Beauty Studio, Denver MooiStudio.co —

If couples want an unbelievable experience for their wedding guests, it’s critical for cocktail and dinner hour not to leave music and song selection all up to the DJ. There’s an extreme difference in ambience and fun between DJ background music and personalized song selection by the couple.

Elisabeth Montoya, Owner Bella Sera Event Center, Brighton TheBellaSera.com —

Don’t forget to eat! From the wonderful moment you get engaged to the day you get married, it can be a whirlwind—both swift and breathtaking to say the least. Have someone in charge of making sure you and your guys/gals eat. Nobody wants to be hangry on their wedding day! Merry Hill & Co. Team Merry Hill and Co., Glenwood Springs MerryHillandCo.com

What should couples bring to their very first appointment? We love to see any personal details, from wedding party attire to the invitations. Bringing along swatches of fabrics or linens is really helpful to set the mood of the day. A few images of flowers that the couple likes is always helpful, but remember: We want to create an individual vision that fits each couple’s style. Walk us through the design process and how you collaborate with clients. At the first appointment, we sit down and discuss the desired mood of a couple’s wedding day. We dream up ideas and listen to what really speaks to them. From there, we give suggestions about stems and colors, which we eventually use to draft a mood board and proposal. These visual elements really outline how we plan to illustrate the wedding day with flowers. Once couples are ready, we contact them to secure the wedding date on the calendar. From there, we continue to collaborate with couples as details like linens, lighting, tabletops and other décor come together. Typically, we schedule a mock-up one month prior to the wedding date, which gives couples the chance to see their flowers come to life before the main event. How can a couple personalize their flower arrangements? Color! We love when couples come to us with colors in mind, but be open to how we can use those colors and make them really pop.

Do you have any budget hacks for couples trying to save on flowers? Most Colorado couples spend anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 on flowers. If maintaining your budget is a priority, tell your designer at the initial consultation so we can be sure to give you creative and affordable ideas. Be open to options that are less floral heavy. We suggest using items like candles, glassware or décor on guest tables, instead of filling the tablescapes with dense floral centerpieces. Guests will remember unique statement pieces over garlands in every corner. You might want to trim back in some areas in order to really impress in others. What floral trends are you excited about? Natural, organic aesthetics are really on-trend. Couples have been gravitating toward overgrown wild blooms, branches and berries. We’ve also love seeing couples who are open to unique twists on the trends, like spicing up a neutral palette by mixing in a punch of mustard yellow. These color combinations play on something most people have never seen before.

First things first: How far in advance should couples book their floral designer? We suggest couples reach out as soon as they secure the date and venue. Typically, this means booking one year to nine months in advance. That said, things happen. Some couples start to plan a bit later in the process, which we can accommodate as long as the date is available.

We are a nonprofit organization that grants Wedding Wishes to adults who are facing life-altering circumstances or terminal illness. Their wish is to be married to their partner, but due to their illness, they often don’t have the time, money or resources to plan a wedding or vow renewal. THEIR STORY Kari Klinkenborg (31 and a commercial actress and food blogger) and Ryan Anderson (29 and a professional basketball player) had two options once engaged: plan a wedding in six months or wait another year for the NBA season to end to get married. The pair decided to go with the former. “We were ready,” Kari says. Finding the ideal location for the “rustic glam” affair meant heading back to the green groves of Kari’s native Colorado, despite having to plan from afar. “I knew Steamboat was the place,” she says. “Flying Diamond Ranch is such a stunning and serene property.” The whirlwind planning ended in a day Kari calls “nothing short of magical.” Kari, Ryan and their guests celebrated the newlyweds in a romantic forest oasis all to themselves, complete with cozy, whimsical teepees and whispy installations. “Everything had a little Colorado touch,” Kari says. —Louis Baragona

LOUNGE SEATING Between the ceremony and the reception, guests lounged at vintage high-top tables in a storybook-like aspen grove, a scene Kari calls “one of the prettiest things I’ve seen.” WEDDING PARTY For Kari, confidence was key when it came to the bridesmaids’ attire. For that reason, she asked them to pick their own unique styles, so long as they fit the color palette. BAR The couple even had a bar built among the trees for their cocktail hour.

Figuring out how to fuse Indian and American culture was “the best part of wedding planning,” Allison says.

THEIR STORY Allison Foley (39 and works in advertising) and Gaurav Kukreja (45 and works in private equity) didn’t exactly know what kind of wedding they’d have as they began planning, but they did know one thing: “We wanted the wedding and the reception to reflect who we are—our values, cultures and who we are together,” Allison says. “We wanted everyone to feel like they were among close friends and family.” That meant two ceremonies, one Western and one Hindu, both powered by those same loved ones. “It was DIY all the way and, of course, DIY means lot of help from family and friends,” Allison says. —LB

THEIR STORY Liz (35 and a biologist) and Zach (37 and a lawyer) share a love of adventure, which usually means finding themselves rappelling from a mountain. After spending their first date biking around Denver, then getting engaged on a European backpacking trek, the pair knew the excitement had to continue on their wedding day. “We wanted a mountain location with expansive views,” Liz says. “We love the outdoors, so we wanted the theme of the wedding to capture the natural beauty of what was around us.” Vibrant local wildflower arrangements and breathable indoor-outdoor spaces amplified the day’s casual, rustic vibe. Guests also had the opportunity to help send Liz and Zach on a new path: The pair requested a fund for a new camper for newlywed journeys. —LB

To center the ceremony and frame the couple, they stood under a birch wood arch decorated with bright flowers.

WEDDING PARTY Liz’s bridesmaids were surprised to find they’d coincidentally chosen similar navy dresses, which Liz found a good contrast to the bouquets of cheery florals. TABLE NUMBERS Liz’s mom, an artist, drew the mountain and river illustrations printed on much of the day-of stationery. DESSERT “Zach and I aren’t really cake lovers,” Liz says. So instead, the pair cut into their favorite Key lime pie and offered guests slices from a mini pie bar.

THEIR STORY James Godbolt (30 and a teacher) and Teddy Scott (30 and a grad student) have a way of making something old into something new. Teddy’s proposal with his late father’s band and one of his mother’s old ring boxes exemplifies the pair’s shared knack for finding beauty in the past and adding freshness to tradition. On their wedding day, that meant breathing new life into fallen leaves as wedding décor staples, dressing groomsmen in tartan kilts and Teddy recording an original first dance song. For James, the “most treasured” of all was the vows. “We wanted a traditional say-and-repeat format, but not a traditional list of vows,” James says. “We found a good compromise.” —LB

VENUE The historic Cherokee Ranch & Castle, which overlooks the Rocky Mountains, made for a stately, old-world setting for James and Teddy’s ceremony and reception. GREENERY The couple found inspiration in the deeply rich hues of fall leaves, which they turned into “showstopping pieces,” James says, including an artistic, colorful canopy in the tent. PLACE SETTINGS Soft, plaid linens, copper flatware and dried leaves brought some rustic charm to the exposed wood tablescapes.

THEIR STORY

73

Josephine Mataley (26 and a nursing student and US Navy operations specialist) and James Doherty (32 and a police officer) wore several different hats while wedding planning with the help of Pinterest, doing just about everything from event planning to designing stationery. In the beginning, Josephine took charge by choosing the color palette, selecting blush pink, gold and white. “The colors came together after a lot of research,” Josephine says. From there, the pair worked together tirelessly as things began falling into place, with James even making the wedding favors the night before. In the end, it was worth it, she says. “It was everything I dreamed of.” Of course, the well-researched hues the couple settled on at the start were the perfect fit. “The colors brightened up the whole place and made the day even more beautiful,” Josephine says. —LB Roses filled the bouquets and lined the aisle alongside gold, glittering tulle.

THEIR STORY Gabriella Polen (29 and a teacher) and Louis Fratta (30 and a geologist) decided on one major theme before their summertime ceremony: fun. Rather than sticking to convention, “we made sure that everything was bright, colorful and felt like us,” Gabriella says. Instead of limiting the décor to a single color palette, “it was more like all the bright colors,” she says. The couple skipped a wedding party, raised a toast with Coors Light after saying their vows and nixed slow songs in favor of keeping things upbeat. 81

As Kathleen Wu (57 and an attorney) and Shawn Hill (55 and an aeronautics industry executive) began to plan their wedding, they said “no” to any and all second guessing. That was how they met, after all. “I would normally never, ever say “yes” to a blind date,” Kathleen says. “But sometimes you have to switch off autopilot and do something wild.” An April engagement led to an August wedding, which logistically meant there wasn’t much time for questions anyway. Luckily, the couple’s theme came naturally, just like their bond. The pair honored Kathleen’s Chinese heritage with hand-painted chinoiserie décor, Shawn’s favorite instrument with a bagpiper and establishing their new family’s bond by planting an aspen tree with their children, who served as the wedding party. For the couple, the whole affair “was an exclamation point of over-thetop love,” Kathleen says. —LB

PUPPY LOVE The signature sips—Gracie’s gin and juice and Sydney’s whiskey smash—were affectionately named after Kate and Michael’s two dogs.

THEIR STORY

COTKRFW19_Sect_06_(081_096).indd 85

85

Katharine (Kate) Gillett (27 and a pediatric intensive care nurse) had high hopes of marrying Michael Seyman (25 and a pediatric cardiac intensive care nurse) at Glacier National Park, but even their mostly-family guest list exceeded what the park would allow. Luckily, their plan B, Kate’s family’s house overlooking Flathead Lake, was anything but a backup. The weekend celebrated Montana’s finest, with a group hike, dishes like venison tenderloin bruschetta and huckleberry phyllo cups, and Michael’s favorite local brews— Moose Drool from Big Sky Brewing and Cold Smoke from KettleHouse Brewing Company. Even their cake had huckleberry filling and showed off a custom monogram honoring their love of the mountains. After a ceremony Kate’s grandfathers officiated in an outdoor chapel constructed just for the occasion, the newlyweds recessed under a shower of biodegradable confetti. —Lois Brunnert Bethune

COLOR PLAY The party’s palette and the barware took a cue from Kate’s favorite jewel tones—emerald, eggplant, navy and a spin on Deborah Lippmann “Single Ladies” red nail polish. BOUQUET Kate’s bright mix included anemones, peonies, clematis and wild blueberries. WELCOME GOODIES Montana-made treats like Béquet caramels, huckleberry scones, trail mix, state-shaped cookies and Hurraw! lip balm got guests mountain ready.

modern wedding whites ecru, cream, stone, slate

WHY IT WORKS White is forever a classic, there’s no arguing that (um, hello, it’s called “wedding white” for a reason!). But this is 2019, and you want your wedding to feel like you, so add in shades of subtle cream, gray and taupe to give the monochromatic palette a bit of added dimension. We promise, it will keep it feeling fresh and modern, not crazy-traditional or boring. HOW TO USE IT White can really play well with any style, from a glam affair overflowing with metallic accents to a rustic, Scandiinspired intimate elopement. Whatever your vibe, complement a single-shade palette with tons of added texture. Ask your florist to vary the style and size of the blooms at your altar, dress up your crew in gowns or suits in a variety of fabrics or layer your tables with a mix of linen, velvet and silk. More visual interest will mean your overall look feels dynamic, not stale and uninspired.

WHY IT WORKS Boho is back, but this time it’s grown up a bit. Sunset-inspired hues like rust and sienna are offset by moody mauve and barely-there taupe for a celebration that’s warm and welcoming yet sophisticated. Plus, these picks are fit for any season—play them up in summer with pops of bold yellow, or make them a bit more wintry with the addition of a dark green. HOW TO USE IT Sprinkle these desert hues over every inch of your fete, starting with your invitation suite. Rose gold foil printing will look amazing on blush or burnt orange invitations. At your reception, blanket your tables in mauve linens or macramé table runners and finish off your lounge seating with a pile of Moroccaninspired blankets and pillows. When it comes to blooms for your day, ask your florist to add in exotic picks like protea or pampas grass, or go green with tons of succulents, ferns and air plants. >>

the new pastels

WHY IT WORKS Pastels have gotten a bad rep as being sticky sweet or overly feminine—but we’re here to prove you wrong. The new take on these soft hues: a bit of grit. Slightly muted and paired with black or modern details, your favorite softies are now part of a funky-and-fresh combination that’s anything but saccharine. HOW TO USE IT Instead of going the (maybe obvious) romantic route with these hues, work them into an otherwise modern vibe for your day. Artist-inspired brush strokes and bold black typography on your invitation suite suggest guests prepare for the unexpected, while a pastel wedding dress or suit could be the perfect surprise touch. When it comes to florals and décor, swap spray roses and peonies for spray-painted foliage or flowers (baby’s breath FTW!) that will feel playful and festive. Finish your bash with a smoke bomb exit for an Insta-worthy explosion of color. >>

94

dutch masters wine, tangerine, saffron, cerulean

WHY IT WORKS You know those works of art that are all moody and rich and absolutely stunning? Well, gear up, because that’s about to be your wedding. This palette is all about bringing the drama, with luscious wine and cerulean blue pairing up with brighter tangerine and saffron for a combo that is unbeatably gorgeous. With colors this pretty, it’s really a more-is-more-is-more situation, so don’t be afraid to saturate every single part of your day. HOW TO USE IT Flowers, flowers, flowers! Tons of buds naturally play into this palette, especially if you’re saying “I do” during autumn. Let your arrangements or installations do the décor work for you (even better if you’re celebrating outside among fall foliage), then add to the scene with cool pops of blue textiles and tons of luxe gold metallics. While you’re at it, carry these colorful shades into your wedding party look—they’ll complement everyone.

WHY IT WORKS These colors pretty much scream luxury, making them the ideal unexpected combo for a black-tie affair. They’re complementary to each other too, meaning you can use them in any combination and really never get it wrong (finally, something in wedding planning that is straightforward!). HOW TO USE IT A little goes a long way when it comes to shades this saturated, so focus on intentional pops of color, like beautiful tinted tablecloths or an emerald invitation suite that makes for a very happy mail day. Task your florist with adding tons of greenery to your reception venue as an eye-catching (and inexpensive) way to stick with your chosen palette. Extra wow-worthy moments, like an art-deco-inspired cake in rich emerald, will have all your guests reaching for their phones. Plus, how stunning would your gals be as your “something blue” in peacock-hued dresses? So chic!

BRING ON THE FUN

Amber Fairbanks and Gabby Greenleaf are the cofounders of Banks & Leaf, based in Denver. They have over 18 years of combined experience in event design and wedding coordination.

We suggest you put your overall wants on paper, then think about what you can’t live without. Once you eliminate the extra fluff, you can focus on what makes both of you feel the most excited.

If you can make it work with your budget, bring on a planner right at the start. They’ll save you countless hours of research and tons of stress, plus help you narrow in on the design details you’ll love.

The most memorable weddings are personalized to the couple, so focus on thoughtful touches that make your event you, like replicating a dish from your favorite restaurant for your reception meal.

This year, a lot of couples want to make their party an interactive event for guests. It’s been fun figuring out how to bring those ideas to life and keep guests reminiscing for years to come.

Stephanie McKean is the owner and designer behind Pier 9 Design, where she works with clients to create custom wedding and event stationery reflective of their personalities.

Add a special touch to your invitations by having a custom illustration of your wedding venue or location done in watercolor. It can be used on the envelope liner and throughout your day.

Splurging on letterpress printing or foil stamping for your main invitation is a great way to make a statement. Then, print everything else (RSVP, details card) digitally to save a bit of money.

Carry elements from your paper goods to all aspects of your wedding dĂŠcor, like using cocktail napkins or ceremony programs in the same design style or color palette. It will help create a cohesive celebration.

We always ask our couples to share inspiration that goes beyond weddingrelated content. Furniture, clothing and architecture imagery can all be used to help unveil a couple’s vision and set their style.

edge up your look with metallic accessories

1

Shop early Take note: A designer wedding gown is custom made. It will take months of work to create and a series of alterations to fit your body perfectly. In other words, it’s not the kind of garment you can toss into an online shopping cart and have show up on your doorstep two days later—which is why you should go to a bridal salon to shop for your gown. Book your first appointment 9 to 12 months before your wedding date so you have plenty of time to order and alter your dress. (Some designers can accommodate orders in six months or less, but, even then, you’re cutting it close.) If you’re shopping closer to your wedding, you may be limited to floor samples or off-the-rack gowns. And small stores may not be able to accommodate last-minute orders.

2

124

3

Do your research Before you start shopping, think about what style you want. Consider your wedding venue, vibe and body type to narrow that down. Then look through pictures of wedding dresses online and in magazines, and save the styles you like. In our (ahem) unbiased opinion, TheKnot.com is a great place to begin—you can search thousands of gowns by style and price, and if you find a few you want to try on, you can see which local salons carry your favorites.

4

Hidden costs add up Your wedding gown budget includes more than the dress. Your veil or headpiece, shoes, jewelry, undergarments and alterations (and in some cases, steaming and storing your dress) will also add to your bottom line. Factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your final shopping budget.

LORELY MEZ A , SHOES: EGOSHOES.COM

Always book an appointment While you may get lucky and snag a salesperson just by walking in, scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention. Also, plan to play hooky to avoid crowds. Going in on a weekday will allow you to hit the stores while crowds are at a minimum, making for a less stressful experience. You’ll get much more attention from the sales staff if you shop on a slow Tuesday morning rather than a hectic Saturday afternoon.

5

Make requests Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer doesn’t mean it will have the exact wedding dress you’ve been wanting to try on. But if you phone in advance and request a specific style, chances are a salon staffer will be able to call in a sample of that gown ahead of your appointment. >>

PERFECT YOUR FIT

Amanda Chapline is the owner of La Vallée Bridal, a bridal boutique in Vail. The salon carries designer brands like Alon Livne, Inbal Dror, Pronovias and Marchesa.

Wedding dresses can take six to eight months to make since they’re custom. Shipping and alterations can add two more months to the process, so start shopping at least 9 to 12 months ahead of time.

If a bride has a specific dress they’d like to try on, we can request a loaner sample from the designer. Notify the salon early enough to ensure they can receive it in time for your appointment.

This experience should be a fun and memorable one, so stay open-minded. Try on styles you wouldn’t typically consider, and look to your stylist for more suggestions—they’re the experts and there to help.

You’ll probably have three or four dress fittings. If your gown requires more than standard alterations, like fitting the bust and adjusting the hem length, you may need to book some extra appointments.

Shop for your shape When trying on dresses, focus less on the number on the scale or your dress size and more on the general shape and frame of your body. Your weight may be constantly fluctuating, especially if you’re stressed out, so don’t let that be the deciding factor in choosing your dress. Concentrate on finding a silhouette that accentuates the features you love and makes you feel confident.

Limit your entourage You may be tempted to invite all your friends and family to help you shop for your gown, but bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t. Enlist one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown that best suits you and your style and not feel pressured by too many conflicting opinions.

8

Trust is key Even if a gown doesn’t look amazing on the hanger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look amazing on you. Be open to what an experienced consultant thinks will flatter your figure and work with your wedding style (after all, they’ve done this before). Bottom line: The dress you end up loving might be different than what you originally pictured, and that’s okay.

126

9

Don’t get discouraged We know coming up empty-handed on your first salon appointment can be a letdown, but don’t give up. There are hundreds of bridal designers out there with thousands of designs, which makes your odds of finding a fantastic wedding day look pretty darn good. “The one” for you is definitely out there.

10

You’re paying for an experience While shopping online for your dress may seem like the more convenient option, visiting a bridal salon is a once-in-alifetime experience with numerous benefits of its own. For starters, you’ll get face-to-face interaction with a wedding dress expert to help guide you, taking the guesswork out of finding your perfect size and silhouette. Additionally, you have the opportunity to touch and feel the dresses you’re considering, so you know exactly what you’re paying for. Trust us—while dress photos may look dreamy online, there’s a huge difference between high-quality fabrics and embellishments and low-quality ones in person. Practical aspects aside, your salon appointment is first and foremost a special moment. It’s a chance to celebrate your upcoming nuptials, spend a day with the people you love and enjoy accomplishing a huge moment in your wedding planning process.

5 ways to customize your wedding dress Gowns certainly aren’t one style fits all—and there are actually a lot of options where customizing your dress is concerned. Here are some common add-ons.

1. Modify embellishments

You might feel like your dress could use a little more, or even a little less, embellishment. See how much control you have over the existing details on your dress—can you add more to or remove from certain areas?

2. Lace it up

Swapping out a zipper for a corset closure adds a romantic finishing touch for brides looking for a dramatic back. But a corset-style closure isn’t only for looks. If you think you might need extra breathing room, a lace-up back gives you some leeway.

3. Make it personal

Find a creative way to incorporate “something old, new, borrowed or blue.” Stitch your loved one’s initials in blue inside your bodice, close to your heart, or sew a charm with a special meaning into the hem.

4. Add sleeves

Fell in love with a strapless dress but looking for more coverage or support? Ask your stylist about adding sleeves or straps. Most gowns can be customized with cap sleeves or straps, and many silhouettes can even be altered with long sleeves. Bonus: They’re on trend. Or if you’re looking for a less permanent option that you can switch out between ceremony and reception, consider a jacket or capelet.

5. Switch up your bustle

Every dress with a train needs a bustle, but not many brides know that each bustle is custom made to suit the gown. These tricky systems of hooks, buttons and ties are designed to pull your train off the floor, and they need to be carefully sewn in a pattern that works with each individual silhouette.

Discover the prettiest styles, from the more traditional to the new and trendy. BY SHELLEY BROWN ILLUSTR ATIONS BY JESSICA DURR ANT

Veils are an easy way to express yourself. But with so many options to choose from, how do you know which one’s right for you? We broke down all the different styles, including the latest trends, with tips on how to wear them so you can uncover (sorry, we had to!) the perfect veil for your wedding look. >>

waltz-length veils are made for dancing

birdcage Also known as a cage, this shorter style covers and frames just your face for a more minimalist statement. Most often it’s made out of wide net or sheer tulle—something you’ll easily be able to see through—and finished with whimsical accents like feathers, flowers or pearls. The trick to pulling off this less traditional look is to let the edge of the veil fall just below the nose. PAIR IT WITH Cage veils were the height of fashion in the ’40s and ’50s, so that makes them the perfect match for retro-inspired dresses like swingy, tea-length gowns, structured sheaths and slinky, old-Hollywood-inspired slip dresses. They’re also a fun way to add a touch of vintage glam to a suit or jumpsuit.

130

blusher A blusher actually refers to the short, single layer of tulle, lace or netting that’s worn over the face and then flipped over the head or removed after you walk down the aisle. It comes in chin, shoulder or fingertip length and can be added to a variety of veil styles. But a blusher can also stand on its own. Choose one layer, or if that’s too simple, try a double-tiered style where you have two layers of tulle: one layer pulled over the face and the other draped behind your head. Whichever length or however many layers you choose, the veil should be fastened to the crown of your head. PAIR IT WITH A universal style, the blusher works with almost any type of gown. Wearing just the short layer gives off a chic, sophisticated air that lends itself to more fashion-forward dresses.

mantilla This Spanish-style veil almost always comes in either all lace or in tulle that features a wide, intricate lace edge. It should be positioned two inches from your hairline so its circular shape gracefully drapes down and frames your face on either side. For the traditional look, attach it with an ornamental comb (also called a peineta), or edge it up with a fresh flower crown or crystal tiara. PAIR IT WITH Allow the dramatic lace to take center stage and pair this romantic veil with sleek silhouettes that won’t compete with its shape. Skip the heavy embellishments as well and opt for a gown with small touches of matching lace instead.

COTKRFW19_Sect_09_(129_144).indd 130

waltz Also sometimes called a ballet veil, this style falls between the knee and the ankle and is usually double layered and worn with a blusher. These veils exude elegance and formality and, because they don’t touch the floor, they’re short enough for a bride to comfortably walk and even dance in—hence the name. PAIR IT WITH This style pairs well with formal floor-length gowns, like A-line and mermaid silhouettes, and dresses without trains.

elbow Slightly shorter than fingertip, this veil extends 25 inches in length to the bride’s elbows. The more manageable length tends to be more versatile. It’s a nice complement to a simple silhouette, but it also won’t overpower a more showstopping gown. PAIR IT WITH One of the best things about this veil is you can pair it with just about any style. The elbow length is also perfect for brides who want the look of a longer veil but have a gown with details on the lower half (like intricate buttons, lace appliqué or ruffles) they don’t want to cover up. >>

fingertip

a chapel veil works best with a dress with a train

One of the most popular lengths (even Kate Middleton sidestepped royal tradition and chose this shorter option), this veil falls below the hips and extends to—you guessed it—the fingertips. Secure this style, which is usually made up of several layers of tulle or netting, at the crown of your head, slightly behind it or, if your hair is up, just above your updo. PAIR IT WITH This versatile veil is beautiful with a wide range of dresses, but it looks particularly pretty with ball gowns and, since it puts the focus on the torso, dresses with more elaborate bodices. You may also want to consider pairing it with a cathedral- or chapel-length veil—that way you can remove the longer one for the reception and leave the shorter top layer in place.

132

flyaway A wispy, multilayered style that just brushes the shoulders, it’s considered less formal than other options. As the name suggests, the tulle used in this kind of veil usually has a stiffer quality that causes it to “fly away” from the to-be-wed, adding poufy volume to the top of the head. PAIR IT WITH Due to its short and sweet feel, a flyaway veil works well with shorter, more casual dresses. If your gown is heavily embellished or has a sexy, plunging back, this simple style is also the perfect way to wear a veil without obscuring the details you love.

juliet cap Inspired by the fashion of the 16th century, this unique veil is making a comeback thanks to its pretty, oldworld feel. This über-romantic style is typically made of sheer tulle or tulle with a lace-embellished edge. There are two ways to work it: You can either take a lace-trimmed veil and wear it as a cap, with the sides pinned back behind each ear, or attach a veil of your choosing to a separate cap. PAIR IT WITH It’s perfect for a lacy gown with a vintage-inspired feel or a simple slip dress with lace details. Add fresh blooms behind one ear for an extra-sweet effect.

COTKRFW19_Sect_09_(129_144).indd 132

chapel Typically 90 inches long, this is a formal veil that extends to the floor, falling two-and-a-half yards from the headpiece. It should sweep the floor, extending slightly past your gown. PAIR IT WITH This simple style is often worn in combination with a sweep train (a veil that just brushes the floor) and blusher for extra oomph. It works with most dress silhouettes and styles but is particularly stunning when layered over a flowy or multilayered gown with a train. If you’re forgoing a train, a chapel veil can add drama without the weight or the hassle—no bustle required. >>

finishing touch

Whether your hair will be down and flowing or in a formal updo, you want a final detail to tie your whole look together. If a veil isn’t for you, there are plenty of other options, from jeweled headbands and tiaras to a bohemian floral wreath or flirty fascinator.

4 bridal fashion rules to break Rules are meant to be broken, and this applies to your wedding. You’re the bride, so follow tradition or make up your own—it’s up to you. RULE TO BREAK

You Can’t Mix Metals Pairing yellow gold, rose gold and platinum used to be a big no-no, but now we’re saying yes to this trendy mix. There are so many ways to

channel your inner royal with this dramatic option

incorporate this new style (go with platinum earrings and a rose gold bracelet or have gold and silver details on your dress), but our favorite interpretation of this trend is stacking a variety of metal bands with your engagement ring. RULE TO BREAK

You Must Have a Veil You won’t have too many chances to wear a veil, but just because the opportunity to do so is rare, doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for you. Instead of a piece of tulle, adorn your hair with a flower crown, an art-deco-inspired halo headpiece that wraps around

134

cathedral Looking to make an entrance? This is the style for you. The mother of all veils, the cathedral is also the most formal. Sometimes referred to as the “royal veil”—it’s the veil of choice for countless members of the British royal family, including Diana and Meghan Markle—this style typically falls about three-and-ahalf yards from the headpiece and is often worn in combination with a blusher and a gown with a long train. It’s an especially great option if your ceremony venue has a long aisle to walk down. PAIR IT WITH The sweeping cathedral can hold its own next to even the most over-the-top ball gown. As a rule of thumb, the veil should extend past the train, so if you choose a cathedral veil, opt for a cathedral- or semi-cathedral-length train.

your forehead, or a hair vine that winds around a pretty updo. If you want to give a nod to tradition without all the formality of a long veil, try a headband that has a cage veil attached to the front. RULE TO BREAK

Don’t Forget Your “Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue” We love this tradition, but you don’t need to follow it so strictly—or at all. We say if you want to flaunt a “something red” instead (like the bottoms of a new pair of Louboutins) or pretty blush accessories, then go for it. RULE TO BREAK

tradition trivia

Did you know the bride originally wore a veil because the groom wasn’t supposed to see her before they were married? And not just in the hours before the wedding, but not once before they said “I do.”

You Have to Wear Heels We understand the allure of heels—they make you look taller and thinner, but they do come at a price. You’ll be on your feet for close to (if not more than) 10 hours on your wedding day. If it’s worth it to you, do it—but you definitely don’t have to put your toes through torment. Other totally weddingworthy options are embellished sneakers, chic ballet slippers or trendy strappy flats.

A fresh take on the shade Originally thought to deflect the Evil Eye and represent purity and fidelity, the “something blue” superstition of years past is meant to help couples get luck on their side ahead of “I do”—whether they want to prevent a rainy ceremony, drunken groomsman or legit marriage doom (not that you should be worried about that last one). Nowadays though, the pretty hue is showing up in much more playful ways than before, with modern pairs working blue into everything from getaway cars and painted leather jackets to frosty signature cocktails and even their wedding day hairstyle (how cool is that?). >>

MATCHING WEDDING PARTY

Personality-packed attire for all Historically, matching bridesmaid dresses stemmed less from wanting a colorcoordinated girl squad and more from, you know, distracting vengeful attackers looking to kidnap a bride because of her dowry. Thankfully, we live in 2019, and you can marry whomever you want with whomever you want by your side. And if you don’t envision your crew rocking the same floor-length gown, encourage them to choose their own unique looks that match their personalities. Unifying the vibe through a color palette or pattern helps it feel cool but cohesive.

UNITY CEREMONY FUN FAC T

Special moments for two

158

At its core, marriage is two lives becoming one (awww), so it’s no surprise that customs meant to reinforce unity are at the center of many religious and spiritual ceremonies. Tried-and-true acts like lighting a candle or tying your hands together (known as handfasting) are still wildly popular with couples, but more duos are choosing to cement their bond with a unity moment that’s more reflective of their love story. Was your first date at a Mexican taco joint? Mix up the perfect batch of guac (cilantro or no cilantro, we’ll let you decide) or swig tequila shots as your first act as a married pair. Or get your blood pumping by tag-team sawing a log to then display in your home. Whatever you come up with, give the act a shout-out in your ceremony program to let guests in on the unique meaning behind it. (Hey, you could even invite them to take those tequila shots with you.)

Swapping posed portraits for couples’ shots on a merry-go-round? Yes, please!

Whether out of superstition or religious reasons, many couples forgo seeing each other before hitting the aisle. And while that’s totes a personal choice, it doesn’t mean you can’t score those cute “first look” photos you see all over Insta. If you don’t want to have a face-to-face with your love before the ceremony, why not try a secluded hand hold meets pep talk, in which you touch— but not see—your partner? Or get wow-worthy reactions from your crew by revealing your wedding day look to your parents, friends or siblings. >>

160

Fun with your florals Believe it or not, flowers at a wedding have less than romantic beginnings. They were initially incorporated to ward off evil and mask odor. (Yep, sorry.) But since then, pretty stems have become a main style point for many to-be-weds looking to decorate their day. For a fresh twist, take inspiration from Victorian-era couples and ask your florist to use buds with special meanings (like gardenias for joy or hydrangeas for gratitude) or focus on drama with oversize bouquets and hanging installations. Non-flower “flowers” are big now too, so feel free to trade petals for plants, greenery and even tropical leaves painted in pastels.

Incorporating whomever you want There’s no denying it—kids are cute. And if you have a few little ones you want to involve in your walk down the aisle, we say go for it. But just because you’re sans a niece or nephew doesn’t mean you have to go without that coveted “aw” moment at the ceremony. Couples are now having anyone and everyone precede them down the aisle, whether it’s a beloved dog ring bearer or flower grannies (we die). Think of these roles as the perfect opportunity to incorporate friends or family who may not otherwise be included in your wedding party.

SHAPE SWAP

Unless you’re lucky enough to find a unicorn venue that checks off every box on your wish list, you’re probably going to compromise on a few things here or there when deciding where you’ll tie the knot. Maybe the space you chose has the incredible seaside view you dreamed of, but the tables it provides leave you feeling underwhelmed. Or, maybe you can hardly stand to look at the ballroom wallpaper, but the price per head can’t be beat. Whatever the issue, we have the clever fix. Trust us—clashing colors will be the last thing on your mind on your wedding day.

take a seat If you don’t have the budget to rent chairs, disguise yours with help from custom seat cushions or swags of greenery.

Terrible flooring

Gaudy chairs

The problem An unattractive carpet or eclectically tiled floor gives the venue a worn-out feel or majorly competes with your vision. The fix Take a big deep breath and keep in mind that, depending on your setup, your dining tables will cover much of the less-thanstellar floor in question (as will dim evening lighting). Ask to walk through the venue again the next time they’re setting up for a wedding about the same size as yours to get a peek into just how much of the floor will actually be showing. If it still bothers you, you have a few options. If you’ll have to bring in a dance floor surface anyways, consider pricing out the cost of outfitting the whole space in the same material (like hardwood flooring or a chic black-and-white checkered tile). Another solution? Roll out several neutral carpets (a timeless neutral style, like sisal, can often be rented) to create a blank-slate background fit for any décor.

The problem You didn’t luck out with beautiful dining chairs. The fix If your venue’s available seating is cramping your style, you may have to resort to rentals. The bad news? It’ll definitely add to your tab. The good news? With so many unique styles to choose from (metallic chiavari chairs, rustic wood benches and so on), you’ll be able to find a version that perfectly suits your wedding day vibes. Your planner or venue can suggest a rental company that outfits large parties on the regular, so you won’t have to worry about coordinating drop-off or pickup on your own. If you simply can’t swing the extra cost, try making the current style work with a few clever solutions. Pick an eye-catching fabric to make into seat cushions for a pop of color, ask about the availability of slipcovers to disguise them completely or task your florist with creating swags of greenery for each individual chair. >>

LIGHT IT UP Use image mapping on a blank white wall to make your space feel more dynamic.

An oversize space The problem A too-large reception room feels cavernous and impersonal, even though you’ll be having over 100 guests. The fix Don’t stress—or feel like you need to add to your guest list. You can up the intimacy of a sprawling space in a few easy ways. First, ask your planner or venue coordinator if it’s possible to use rectangular tables for your dining setup—they’ll take up more empty space than circular tables, which will go a long way in making the room feel more utilized. Past that, consider setting up different areas around the reception to put the extra square footage to work. Cluster together several plush sofas, ottomans and even fire pits (if outdoors) to create a cozy space right off the dance floor where guests can relax, mix and mingle, or set up a special satellite bar and high-top table section for the perfect spot to serve up the evening’s signature cocktail selection.

Jarring columns

Glam drapery hung from the walls or ceiling helps create a world within your venue and neutralizes any in-your-face wallpaper.

Too bold wallpaper

Clashing colors

The problem The red-and-gold damask print wallpaper in the ballroom is a look only your grandmother will appreciate. The fix Create another world within the room and install a neutral backdrop by covering the walls in glam drapery. Select a fabric that fits well with your wedding style (for example, a light and breezy blush linen for a vineyard affair) or opt for a simple white for a clean, neutral look. Then, have the venue hang it from the walls (or even the ceiling) for an intimate, cozy feel that will also rid you of the unsightly wallpaper altogether. The end result will be beautiful as is, but to really make it stand out, you could also invest in image mapping. The projection technology allows you to transform any space with lighting and moving pictures, like soft flowers or a beautiful forest scene. On a budget? Stick to traditional uplighting, which can lend a similar glowy effect, sans imagery.

The problem The off-beat color scheme already saturating your venue competes with the soft and romantic blush-hued event you have your heart (and your mood board) set on. The fix Instead of fighting against the palette already present in your venue, try to embrace it. Pick one or two of the less offensive hues to pull into your color scheme via pretty rental napkins or patterned seat cushions, so it feels like they coordinate intentionally, not clash drastically, with your added décor. If you really can’t work with any of the preexisting shades, you’re going to have to collab with a team of pros to transform everything your eye sees into a neutral base using rentals (like rolling out a carpet or covering chairs). Then, you’ll be free to layer in textures and colors that reinforce your preferred range of shades. It’ll be a pricey fix, but we promise—guests won’t even notice what’s left behind.

JUMI STORY

166

behind the curtain

The problem Support beams or columns spread throughout the space interrupt the eye and will hinder the flow of guests. The fix Disguise any posts or columns (even the poles in a tented reception) with the clever addition of greenery. Task your florist with bringing a few smaller trees or branch arrangements to place in front of the poles and distract guests from seeing what’s beneath. If you’d rather not add to your floral budget (totally fine!) turn the visual interruption into a romantic accent by stringing café bistro light bulbs between the poles or wrapping them down the pole in a spiral. They’ll end up looking so pretty glowing in the night, you may even be happy they’re there (seriously).

At a recent wedding reception I attended, the couple had a Pittsburgh cookie table. Not only did it look stunning (and taste delicious), but it allowed family, friends and the local community to contribute to the wedding by making batches of treats ahead of time. I had never seen anything like it before, and it was a beautiful way to incorporate loved ones into the day. At the end of the night, we got to box up cookies to take home with us too! -ANDIE jersey fun

I went to a wedding where the couple surprised their guests with a live performance from the cast of the Broadway show Jersey Boys. A friend of mine got married a few months ago. Her dad had passed away two years prior, so her husband and his mom decided to join her and her mom for one big parent dance, rather than the traditional separate ones. They did a giant jig to Mamma Mia! and literally everyone there was singing along, laughing and dancing in their seats. It’s such a hard tradition to figure out with a big loss, and they made it so fun. -JESS

At one friend’s wedding, they hired a DJ for the reception plus a standalone sax player who played along with all the songs, bopping around the perimeter of the dance floor the whole night. It was unexpected, hilarious and fun—and the only thing the groom felt strongly about having. -IV Y

My friend is Indian and her husband is Jewish, and they got married in a Jewish wedding ceremony. They didn’t have a formal wedding party, but they did select seven loved ones to recite prayers. I was one of those selected, and it was so special to be included. Guests surrounded them in a circle at the request of the officiant, who wanted to create a space of community for the couple to rely on. It was such a sweet moment. -MANAL

I was recently at a wedding where the groom, who works as an audio engineer, wrote an original song for his bride to walk down the aisle to. They also had a few friends of theirs sing during the ceremony, and those two elements combined really reflected them as a couple. Oh, and the groom completely lost it when my friend walked down the aisle to his song. Swoon. -ANDREA

A wedding reception in our family started off with a surprise appearance by a fabulous Lady Gaga impersonator. Watching her and five burly, mesh-and-leather-clad backup dancers own the dance floor in an upscale ballroom, surrounded by their fairly traditional families (some of whom were probably attending their first same-sex wedding ever) instantly set the tone for the rest of the night. It was a blast! -SHERRY >>

I attended an outdoor wedding in October, and it ended up being freezing that day. They provided hot apple cider for guests to enjoy while waiting for the ceremony to begin. It was so thoughtful and helped everyone’s hands stay warm. -HANNAH

When my best friend got married, her mom gifted her with a beautiful charm that had a picture of her father on it (he passed away when she was very young). It was on a ribbon, and when her flowers were delivered to the room before the ceremony, her mom gave it to her to wrap around her bouquet. There was seriously not a dry eye in the room—even the florist was tearing up! -SAMANTHA dancing gents

At a friend’s wedding a couple of years ago, there was a particularly special moment when it came time for the father-daughter dance. My friend had lost her dad many years before, so she took the time to make a small speech in his honor, then explained she would be dancing with the men who have helped her throughout life. She danced with her uncle, her grandfather and, finally, her brother. When he stepped forward to cut in for the last dance, everyone was teary. It was emotional to witness the bond they had, and to feel their love and loss in one moment. -ANDY guests on parade

I was at a wedding recently where the groom’s father had passed away a few years before. His dad had enjoyed fixing up vintage cars as a pastime, and the groom had inherited one of them that he hadn’t finished before he died. Little did he know, his mom secretly had it fixed up and parked in the front of the church for when the ceremony ended. The groom was floored when he came out—they drove to their reception in it! -STEPH

COTKRFW19_Sect_11_(161_176).indd 172

For her wedding reception exit, my best friend hired an 8-piece brass percussion band to lead guests from the venue to the after-party spot four blocks away. The musicians were instructed to play crowd-pleasing ’90s hits like Boyz II Men’s “Motownphilly” while all us guests trailed behind them. Everyone was too happy and wrapped up in the moment to even notice the freezing temperatures outside (it was the middle of winter!)— we were too busy reliving our glory days together. -ESTHER

make it legal Colorado Marriage License Requirements

GUIDELINES FOR OBTAINING A MARRIAGE LICENSE In Colorado, the legal age for marriage is 18 years old. Couples ages 16–17 must have both parents’ consent, and couples under age 16 must have parental consent and judicial approval. A valid form of ID is required, such as a birth certificate, passport, driver’s license or other government-issued ID that includes date of birth. Residency is not required. There are no general health requirements or blood tests required. If either party has been previously married, he or she must know the date of the divorce or death and the court where the final decree was issued; documentation is not necessary unless date of divorce was within the last 30 days. Couples should apply together, and both must sign the application. There is no waiting period to obtain the license, which is valid for 30 days in the state of Colorado only. The fee for a marriage license is $30, and methods of payment vary by county. Most offices are open Monday through Friday. Please call ahead to get all of the details. WHERE TO APPLY

“We try to hike one ‘fourteener’ a year—a mountain with an elevation of at least 14,000 feet,” Monique says. “With 20 of our family and friends, we started at 6:00 a.m. with headlamps and burritos, and after a four-hour hike, we got married on the top of Mount Huron. We’ve always been adventurous, so a nontraditional wedding felt right for us.”
