EDITOR’S NOTE

Y O U R D A Y, Y O U R W AY Congratulations, you’re engaged! Now do me a favor and forget everything you think is “required” for a wedding. Because, honestly, there are no requirements when it comes to your day, and no one blueprint for all weddings. A better way to go? Turn to your unique story. How did you meet? What are your passions? How do you make each other feel? Look to questions like these (and the answers!) for inspiration and you’ll start to create the outline of a beautiful day. And if you find yourself presented with something that doesn’t feel like “you,” whether it’s walking down an aisle, doing a first dance or wearing certain attire, simply put your own spin on it or skip it—really! The couples who stay true to themselves throughout the planning process end up with weddings they love and we can’t wait to share. So what are you waiting for? Turn the page and get started!

In our last issue, we tackled the topic of size inclusivity in the wedding industry head-on with help from our inspirational cover star, model and body-positivity advocate Hunter McGrady. But we didn’t stop there. Since then, we’ve continued the conversation and push for change in the industry. First up was an expert panel and the first sizeinclusive bridal runway show at New York Fashion Week. A month later followed an educational seminar with salon owners during Bridal Fashion Week. And we can assure you that this is only the beginning!

What should a newly engaged couple ask prospective bakers? There’s plenty to discuss. Ask these questions to everyone you reach out to: 1. Do you bake from scratch or use a cake mix? 2. Will my cake be baked in-house, or will you be using another bakery? 3. Will you be delivering and setting up the cake yourself? 4. Do you use locally sourced ingredients? 5. Are your designs custom for us, or do we pick out of a portfolio of your past work? 6. Will the samples I eat at my tasting be baked fresh or defrosted and warmed up for serving? 7. How far in advance will you be baking my cake from my wedding date? 8. Will you make me a fresh anniversary top tier cake so I don’t have to eat a frozen one a year later? (Who eats anything after a year? Gross.) 9. Do you make the sugar flowers in-house, or do you buy them from somewhere else? If so, where? 10. What’s your favorite flavor? Can I try it at my tasting? @madisonleescakes

What tricks can photographers use to keep couples relaxed during pictures? To capture the best candids, I get chatty with subjects before shooting. Remember: A comfortable couple means better shots for everyone. When in doubt, turn on some music. A good song helps clients loosen up, so you can even suggest they come with a fun playlist on deck. If you’re nervous about getting photos taken, it’s best to have fewer people around. Give @kathylo15 yourself a sec to sneak off and take some couple shots alone.

BALLIN’ Kathy got in the game during our cover shoot, p. 24

Any fashion tips for those prepping for their wedding day? Yes, two. First, when it comes to choosing the color palette for your wedding party (or even your own look!), I recommend going blue. It’s the one color that always works and looks amazing in photos. Personally, I love deep, dark shades of blue best—they can totally take the place of black. Two, when it comes time for your final fitting, bring along the person who will be helping you get dressed on your day— best friend, mom, brother—whomever. If you’re wearing a dress with a puzzling bustle or a bow tie with a pesky clasp, your helper should be able to get in a practice round without running the risk of a dreaded wardrobe malfunction.

How can couples come up with the right wedding hashtag? When it comes to wedding hashtags, don’t get too complicated! Everyone tries to make theirs super unique, but if it gets complex, you run the risk of guests forgetting it—or having one too many cocktails and misspelling it. Although it’s still important to have a wedding hashtag, I highly recommend our app, The Guest. It allows free photo sharing throughout your entire event, and ensures you get every photo your guests took, hashtag or not. At my wedding, everyone used The Guest app (and the hashtag not so much), so my husband and I were able to sift through more than 1,500 photos the day @whittlelittle after our wedding, which was a fun trip down memory lane.

Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). K E E P O R G A N I Z E D Not sure what to do when? C O M P I L E Y O U R T E A M After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros (located right where you are), plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for money to put toward things like your honeymoon flights or a home down payment, start a cash registry on The Knot. T H I N K O F Y O U R G U E S T S Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. I don’t know where to begin when it comes to wedding planning. How do I understand my wedding vision or design style, and where can I gather inspo? A L Y S S A L O N G O B U C C O : First, congrats! I’m so excited for you—this will be fun, I promise. Kick off your planning journey by downloading The Knot Wedding Planner app. You can use it to browse photos and gather tons of inpso, and you can even take our Style Quiz to help nail down your décor DNA (think: rustic coastal with a touch of glam). Past that, I would definitely start broad and work your way in. A lot of design details, big and small— your attire, color palette and even the stationery—will stem from your venue’s vibe, so focus first on location. Where do you see yourselves swapping vows? Once you find your setting, it will be easier to imagine everything falling into place.

What’s the benefit of working with a travel agent when booking my honeymoon when there’s so much available online? H A R M O N Y W A L T O N : Working with a professional can offer added protection if something goes wrong during your trip. But assuming that won’t happen (we hope!), they can also guide you through the best itinerary for your travels, aim to get you upgrades and addedvalue offerings, and just make the experience that much more personal (and romantic) for the two of you. Think of your travel agent as your honeymoon advocate.

78% of couples across the world choose to go on a honeymoon. Most popular destinations include Hawaii, Italy, Mexico and Greece.

B E C K Y M U R R A Y : When making use of a handed-down item, the key is to honor both those who wore it before you and all the people who might rock it down the road. For my wedding, I not only wore my mom’s gown (with a few updates), but I also created a veil from one of the layers of her wedding dress—yes layers, she got married in the ’80s. Creating a veil was particularly sentimental and important to me because I have two sisters who can now wear it without committing to my mom’s entire getup, which might be a bit too traditional for them. In the process, I still maintained the integrity of my mom’s original gown, aka I didn’t rip it to shreds à la 27 Dresses. The very nature of an heirloom object is that it’s something special and worth preserving. However, a bonus is that adding that “you” touch gives a special item even more personality and gives your day even more meaning.

Real Talk

Dress Shopping Boosted My Body Positivity How finding a wedding gown helped me feel more confident in my own skin.

BHLDN

BY OLIVIA MUENTER

STUDIO LE VANA

When a dress sample wouldn’t fit, I would tell myself the problem was with the sample—not my worth.

After all, my brain was still hardwired to spiral into a frenzy of strict diets and workout regimens before major events. I worried all the self-love and acceptance in the world wouldn’t break the cycle. But at each of my bridal salon appointments, I surprised myself. I started looking at wedding dress shopping as a challenge. And, despite my past self’s inclinations, it wasn’t a challenge to punish my body with a crash diet or a fivemile run after a particularly demoralizing appointment (and trust me, at a size 14, a lot of my appointments were frustrating to say the least). Instead, I looked at dress shopping as a challenge to really own the belief that I am worthy of feeling beautiful and enjoying my wedding—without any modifications. I reminded myself that if I wanted to be free of the constant, nagging pressure to change my body, then loving myself throughout the entire dress shopping experience was the ultimate test. Don’t get me wrong—there’s no shame in wanting to look amazing on your wedding day. However, there is a serious problem with thinking you can only look

your best if you’re the skinniest and most toned version of yourself. I certainly wanted to look great when I said my “I dos,” but I also wanted to feel worthy and beautiful—and not just specifically on my wedding day, but every day thereafter. The secret to staying positive while shopping was changing up my self-talk. When a dress sample wouldn’t fit, I would tell myself that the problem was with the sample—not with my worth. When a consultant would make an off-putting comment, I would remind myself that I alone determine my value. When I finally found the dress, it turned out to be a silhouette I would never have imagined looking good on my body. I loved the dress, but I loved that I didn’t feel pressured to starve myself or workout 300 times in 300 days to wear it even more. When I put on my dress, it felt like winning the lottery—there was a rush of endorphins that no failed fad diet or 90day boot camp could ever make me feel. And these days, when I picture my wedding day, I just see me. No changes, edits or modifications. Just me.

few months before getting engaged (I had a hunch a proposal was coming), I was scrolling through wedding dresses on Pinterest when a thought popped into my head. It wasn’t about how I was going to lose weight or tone up before my future wedding, but about the opposite scenario: What if nothing changed before I got married? What If I didn’t lose another pound or do another squat before I walked down the aisle? Would the day be ruined for me? Would it be worthless? I’d had a complicated relationship with my weight since childhood. Growing up, I always felt bigger than other people. Even at my thinnest in high school, I still towered over my friends at six feet tall, and was utterly convinced that if shrinking myself vertically was impossible, then I would have to shrink myself in other ways. For years, I dieted and exercised obsessively, believing if I wasn’t losing weight, then I was failing. It wasn’t until years later during my wedding-dress-inspired dilemma that something really clicked. I realized that if I truly believed a smaller version of me would be more worthy of an amazing wedding, then I would never really enjoy any important event in my life. So, I decided right then and there to stop obsessing over a thinner version of me and start focusing on appreciating the present. I reminded myself that my current body was worthy of wholly experiencing—and enjoying—any life event. I told myself that the smaller version of me I was picturing wasn’t even real. For the first time in a long time, I felt free. In fact, I felt amazing. And then I got engaged. Despite my newfound body positivity, a small part of me still expected that trying on wedding dresses would ruin it.

JEWELRY INSURANCE 101 It might not rank at the top of your wedding to-do list, but insuring the ring is an important step many couples forget. Intimidated about where to begin? Don’t be! It’s not as complicated as it sounds—just follow our advice to find a policy that works for you.

Before signing up for a policy, ask about these important factors:

how to get it The two most common ways to insure a ring are to either go through a specialized jewelry insurer like Jewelers Mutual, or to add a rider to a traditional homeowners or renters policy. There are many benefits that come with specialized insurance, especially one that’s focused exclusively on jewelry. TRADITIONS DEVON + MARTIN DALLAS CLARISSA + WESTON CLEVELAND

“Having a Cinco de Mayo wedding gave us all the more reason to incorporate traditions from my MexicanAmerican heritage in a meaningful way,” Clarissa says. Their lazo, a cord that represents a couple’s lifetime commitment to one another, has been in her family for more than 42 years.

Put simply, a unity ritual is meant to visually represent two people linking their lives together. Although many couples choose to light a candle, given that firelight symbolizes hope, divinity and even the idea of igniting an “eternal flame,” you can mark the moment however you’d like. Whether you script something original or call on a custom from your family tree is up to you—just be sure it’s personal.

“We jumped the broom, an AfricanAmerican tradition that dates back to the time when slaves weren’t legally allowed to marry and relied on alternative rituals to seal their unions,” Devon says. “We also incorporated two readings by the Lebanese-American poet Khalil Gibran and Toni Morrison.”

To make our wedding bands, we casted sterling silver directly into a prepared wooden mold.”

“After we exchanged vows, we had a knot tying ritual to honor my Cambodian heritage,” Kanha says. “Guests individually approached us and tied a red string around our wrists as a way to offer their best wishes for our marriage. During the blessings, we clasped a sword, which Jilson was carrying as part of his traditional Cambodian attire. In my culture, it symbolizes protection.”

metals

Don’t know the difference between platinum and white gold? No problem! Read up on your options before you select a ring setting.

PLATINUM A rare, natural white metal known for its strength and purity, platinum is usually 95 percent pure. Platinum’s density makes it extremely durable, meaning it will keep your center stone protected and secure. It’s also naturally hypoallergenic, so it won’t irritate sensitive skin. While it is the most expensive of the metals, when platinum scratches, there’s very little metal lost, so your ring will withstand years of wear. Also, since it’s a pure white metal, it won’t cast any tint onto your center stone.

YELLOW GOLD Besides the fact that yellow gold is on trend right now, the pure form of gold has plenty of other appeal too. It’s about as low maintenance as it gets (it’s easier to clean than white or rose gold) and it’s a fairly hypoallergenic metal as well, depending on its karat measurement. Not to mention, it’s typically priced slightly lower than other fine jewelry metals like platinum.

WHITE GOLD Yellow gold is turned into white gold when the surface is plated with rhodium (a white metal). If you want the look of a white metal setting but don’t want to splurge on platinum, white gold is a budget-friendly choice. Though it has a similar resemblance to platinum, it’s more widely available and, therefore, less expensive. If you opt for this metal, keep in mind you may need to have your ring replated in the future. The white rhodium coating may eventually wear away and return the ring to its original yellow color.

EDITOR’S TIP If you fall in love with a ring that isn’t available in your size— say, you’re a woman in love with a men’s band or vice versa—don’t count yourself out. Ask if your jeweler can make your preferred design to fit you. — S H E L L E Y B R O W N Senior fashion & beauty editor

A hidden gem is a great alternative if you aren’t into lots of bling.

RO SE GOLD Made popular in 19th-century Imperial Russia, this pink-tinted metal is gold with an added copper alloy. The more copper alloy in the metal, the deeper the rosy tones will be. One of rose gold’s most attractive qualities is its underlying meaning. While white gold represents friendship and yellow gold means fidelity, rose gold symbolizes love.

B E A U T Y

OUNTDOWN There’s so much to do to plan your wedding— who’s got time to think of beauty? We do! Here’s your guide to looking fabulous in time for your day. BY SHELLEY BROWN

The average engagement is just over a year. That gives you plenty of time to look like the best version of yourself before you walk down the aisle. Whether you’ve got major plans (adding six inches to your mane and overhauling your entire skin care regimen) or you just want to get your nails in shape and achieve an overall glow, it can be done— even while juggling all your other wedding to-dos. Follow our foolproof timeline to keep your beauty routine on track in the weeks and months leading up to your wedding.

TKM19WIN_FASHBTY_BeautyLesson.L [P].indd 92

START HERE!

5-6 MONTHS BEFORE Begin a stress-relief regimen. Reserve at least one night a week for some non-wedding fun or quiet time to regroup.

Want to grow out your hair or try a new color or cut? Talk to your stylist and start experimenting now.

Get serious about skin care: Begin a good cleansing and moisturizing program, and consider consulting a dermatologist or making appointments for monthly facials. TRY TH I S Goat Milk moisturizing cream, $50 for 1 oz., KateSomerville.com

1 WEEK BEFORE

Studies show exercise can reduce stress. Jumpstart your fitness routine with a trainer or consider yoga; the postures build lean muscle and are great tension relievers. You’ll feel better overall—no matter what challenges wedding planning throws your way.

3-4 MONTHS BEFORE If you don’t plan on using your regular hairstylist, schedule trials with potential candidates. Take pictures of hairstyles you like, as well as pictures of your veil or headpiece (if you have them). If you have your heart set on an updo, discuss with your stylist how long it will take to grow out your hair so it’s the right length for your desired look.

What you put in your body shows up on your face. Examine your eating habits, but don’t crash diet. Instead, stick to specific goals, like incorporating more whole grains and fruits and veggies into every meal.

Have consultations with potential makeup artists. Take pictures, then analyze them. Do your favorite features stand out? Do you still look like you?

Decide on a hair and makeup team and book them for your wedding date. Set up a day-of wedding schedule for yourself and your attendants.

Try to avoid overindulging in the bubbly at prewedding parties—too much alcohol can lead to dehydration and disrupted sleep.

GETTING CLOSER!

1-2 MONTHS BEFORE See your hairstylist for a trial run of potential ’dos. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Be vocal (but polite) about any tweaks you’d like to make.

CENTER: TROY COVEY/AUGUST; CREAM, FRUITS, VEGETABLES, PHONE, SCISSORS, SOAP, CRUMBLE: SHUTTERSTOCK; BOBBY PINS, BRUSHES, GRANOLA, WATER: GETTY IMAGES; WOMAN ON PHONE:

HERE’S THE DEAL:

Considering a faux glow? Now’s the time to test self tanners or a spray tan. Think about the neckline of your dress, and whether you have tan lines to cover. TRY TH I S James Read Fool Proof bronzing mousse, $23, BlueMercury.com

ALMOST THERE!

Get a final facial. Don’t do this any closer to your wedding date— give your skin time to bounce back from any irritation.

Splurge on a spa treatment like a massage, full-body scrub or some infrared sauna time. You deserve it.

Get a bikini wax and a final eyebrow shaping. Resist the temptation to try a new, fancy place and go to your regular waxer.

Confirm your wedding day beauty appointments. If you’re getting ready in a wedding suite, start figuring out the logistics for you and your attendants.

Exfoliate and moisturize your whole body. And, if you haven’t tried detoxifying dry brushing before, there’s no time like the present.

CENTER: TROY COVEY/AUGUST; CREAM, FRUITS, VEGETABLES, PHONE, SCISSORS, SOAP, CRUMBLE: SHUTTERSTOCK; BOBBY PINS, BRUSHES, GRANOLA, WATER: GETTY IMAGES; WOMAN ON PHONE: REBECCA YALE PHOTOGRAPHY; PRODUCTS: COURTESY OF VENDORS

TRY TH I S The Body Exfoliator, $30, Necessaire.com

Meet with your makeup artist for a trial run. Take note of the lipstick and concealer your artist uses and buy them for touchups. If you’re not hiring a pro, get a makeup tutorial at a department store and purchase the products you need so you have time to practice.

Remember to eat right. Load up on fruits and veggies, and nix the salt and junk. Drink lots of water to help keep your skin clear and glowing.

TRY TH I S Tender Flesh blush in Bloom, $26, FleshBeauty.com

Have your eyebrows professionally shaped, if you haven’t already. Your brows frame your face, and a little grooming goes a long way.

TKM19WIN_FASHBTY_BeautyLesson.L [P].indd 93

Use an at-home face mask or get a facial. If you need extractions, make sure you do them 15 days before your wedding so your skin has time to settle down. TRY TH I S Supermud clearing mask, $59 for 1.7 oz., GlamGlow.com

Have a professional pedicure and manicure. Pay close attention to your mani—you want to be #ringselfie ready.

1 DAY BEFORE Drink lots of water. Have we made ourselves perfectly clear?

Pack a day-of beauty kit with must-haves like lipstick, concealer, blotting papers, Q-tips, setting spray, tweezers, tissues, Advil, deodorant and Band-Aids. TRY TH I S Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray, $15 for 1 oz., Ulta.com; Ultra Precision slant tweezer $35, Tweezerman.com

Gently exfoliate your skin (with products you’ve tried before) to amp up your wedding day glow.

YOU MADE IT!

ON YOUR WEDDING DAY Wash and style your hair for the rehearsal dinner—if you’re having one—and make sure to go superlight on conditioner so your locks don’t feel greasy the morning of.

Remember to fuel up with a healthy, protein-rich breakfast. It will keep you energized for the long day ahead.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Get your hair and makeup done. Wear a robe or button-down shirt (one that matches the color of your gown, if possible, to get the right makeup color application) that can be easily removed.

Get your final haircut or trim. If you dye your hair, get a touch-up. No experimenting here—just stick to the look you love.

Cut down on beverages that stain teeth, like tea and coffee, and try a whitening toothpaste. You may also want to consider a bleaching treatment by a dentist, or use an over-thecounter whitening system.

Enjoy the

day!

Looking for a way to make your rustic bash stand out in a sea of exposed wood and wildflower bouquets? Bring on the black, we say. Pairing the rich onyx hue with streamlined details (think: extra-modern flatware or graphic paper goods) gives the typical rustic aesthetic an added layer of depth. Play up the moodier vibes with more unusual nature-inspired additions, like branches, birchwood, almost-black blooms (we love burgundy dahlias!) and dried foliage for a fresh ode to the great outdoors.

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN Evoke the feel of a pine tree forest— even if you’re ballroom-bound— with these natural décor additions.

BIRCH SLICES With its pretty white bark exterior, birch slices are a subtle way to play with wood textures.

BRANCHES Lend dimension to your centerpieces with a few unique sprawling branches.

RUSCUS Think of ruscus as the new twist on eucalyptus—it’s a great way to add a pop of green to exposed barn beams.

CUE THE CONFETTI Swap traditional paper or petals with olive leaves for a fun twist on the classic postceremony “shower.”

o, “springy” shades of blush, baby blue and butter yellow are your jam? Make ’em work for any season with a slightly frostier take on the typical pastel wedding palette. To ensure your event feels suited to winter, bring in diluted pigments with your blooms, then lean into lots of cozy textures (think: heavy cotton, canvas and lush velvet). They’ll be the key to creating a romantic look that feels light but totally seasonal too.

PRETTY PERCH Make sure every seat at the table feels VIP with a combination of lush floral centerpieces and thoughtful tabletop rentals. Here, an arrangement of coral dahlias and blush roses is toned down with complementary shades of honey yellow and snowy white. A dusty-blue tablecloth, silver beaded chargers and lots of candlelight complete the upscale look. HEADS UP For a totally wow-worthy moment, consider dressing your head table with sprawling centerpieces and a floating arrangement overhead. To incorporate texture and movement into her suspended piece, florist Victoria Ahn of Designs by Ahn paired different varieties of orchids, roses and lisianthus with dried strawflower and asparagus fern sprayed in a bright teal. The end result? An eye-catching piece that will be the talk of the table among your guests. arry your wedding vibe throughout the whole day by using your colors and theme in all your details. To add some edge, consider playing with modern shapes and accents to keep a sweet palette from skewing to saccharin. To start, why not welcome a geometric cake onto the scene? The team behind Samantha Bakes Cakes combined a marble fondant exterior with rice paper shapes (all in the event’s signature soft hues!) to unite the two aesthetics into one cohesive— and delicious—look. Thread that same modern feel into your bridal bouquet with a wild and sprawling shape (instead of the traditional tight bundle typically paired with these shades). Then, keep the balance by pairing chic acrylic boxes (a nod to the original invitation suite) with display-worthy buds and white calligraphy. Finish off the careful details with a selection of hand-painted macarons that ties in the brushstroke details on the invitation suite and the cake’s colors. Venues usually have a date they need your head count by, but don’t use their timeline as yours. I wish we had guests RSVP at least six weeks ahead of time so we could hunt down the stragglers and start on our custom details.

Task a pal with letting you know when it’s time to wave the white flag—that’s what my MOH did when she gave me permission to abandon final-hour tasks that were keeping me from celebrating our weekend.

I’m saying this as a true Pinterest addict: Three projects is the max you should take on. Any more, and you’ll end up like me, frantically ironing decals onto tote bags, burning cookies and pouring homemade candles two days before your wedding. Was it worth it? Totally (our guests loved the personalized details), but my sanity probably could have used the craft break.

I get it—one more piece of paperwork, and you might actually lose your mind. But vendor questionnaires meant to gauge your priorities are so important! I skipped the one our photographer sent and risked missing out on must-have shots (like my grandma’s jewelry). Luckily, she’s a total pro and read my mind, but you don’t want vendors to have to do that. Grab some wine and fill out the forms, guys.

HIT PAUSE ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP

WAIT TO WRITE YOUR VOWS UNTIL THAT MORNING

FORGET ABOUT BREAKING DOWN THE RECEPTION VENUE

FORGET TO COMPILE YOUR TIPS AHEAD

It’s easy for one-onone time to fall victim to wedding chaos, and we definitely sacrificed one-too-many date nights to planning along the way. Make consistent time for your love where nuptial talk is off limits, whether that means a dinner out or binging Schitt’s Creek.

I have a handle on all the things I love about my partner (and had been keeping fragmented notes on my phone), so I thought writing my vows on the morning-of would be soothing and romantic. Wrong. In reality, I felt pressured to rush through something so important (plus it was hard to find time alone to write). My advice? Firm up your draft the week before, then give it a quick morning edit.

Our pros were incredible— they created magic in our already-stunning venue—but when it came to clearing house, that was (mostly) on us. It escaped me that we’d have to handle the disposal and returns of things like vases, florals and rentals after our farewell brunch. Don’t want to worry? Add the task to your vendor contracts!

I knew which vendors I was giving what amounts, but instead of compiling cash in envelopes beforehand, I completely forgot and had friends running to ATMs in the area to take out cash. Did you know most ATMs have a withdrawl limit? Yeah, us either. Don’t be us—go to the bank the week before.

Don’t SHY AWAY FROM THE CAKE CUTTING Our cake, created by Lulu Cake Boutique, was inspired by a blue stucco wall we saw on vacation in Italy (really!) and was one of my favorite parts of our décor. The hang-up? We’re so not “cut the cake” kind of people. But when so many guests were wowed by our standout sweet, we decided to toss in the tradition at the last minute. In the end, I’m so glad we put our edible art center stage.

WHAT’S TRENDING

LANAI, HAWAII Lanai, one of the smallest (and prettiest) inhabited Hawaiian Islands is reachable by a 45-minute ferry ride from Maui. WHY Once home to the world’s largest pineapple plantation, Lanai is now 98 percent owned by billionaire Larry Ellison. Despite its air of exclusivity, most of the island still feels completely trapped in time, covered with wild beaches, pine forests and classic plantation-style homes. WHEN TO GO Set in the rain shadow of the West Maui Mountains, arid Lanai rarely sees rain. June through November are the warmest months, and December through April coincides with the cool-tosee humpback whale migration. WHERE TO STAY There are just two options for hotels on the island. Ten-room Hotel Lanai in tiny Lanai City is fresh off a renovation and has one of the best restaurants in town (From $250; HotelLanai.com). If you want to splurge, Four Seasons Resort Lanai is a 213-room sanctuary set on the incredibly soft sands of Hulopoe Bay. From $1,150; FourSeasons.com/lanai WHAT NOT TO MISS Explore the bluffs and wooded valleys of the island’s interior on a guided horseback ride. The Paniolo Trail winds through groves of guava and ironwood trees, while the beginnerfriendly Koele Trail cuts through the forest and culminates in ocean vistas. $150 per person for a 90-minute trail ride; FourSeasons.com/lanai

GREECE

WHERE Paros, part of the Cyclades, is the most popular Greek island group. WHY Greek poet George Seferis once declared Paros the loveliest of all Greek islands. Just a ferry ride from Athens, its gorgeous beaches still feel like a secret compared to neighboring islands Mykonos and Santorini. WHEN TO GO During June and September, the weather is bone dry and beautiful with cool nights and far fewer tourists. With 30-plus beaches to choose from, including gems like Lageri and Filizi, there’s a good chance you’ll be the sole sunbathers. WHERE TO STAY Located on the northeast side of the island fronting Naoussa Bay, Parilio Hotel is nestled between stunning Kolympithres Beach and the idyllic fishing village of Naoussa. The exterior of the 33-suite hotel echoes the island’s ubiquitous blockwhite Cycladic architectural style; interiors are decorated with global finds. If you want extra privacy, the Sun Suite boasts a private pool. From $350; Sun Suite from $725; ParilioHotelParos.com WHAT NOT TO MISS Dinner at Statheros is a must. The simple mezedakia is run by Konstantina Manolaki, daughter of Argiro Barbarigou, the godmother of Greek cuisine. Cabbage dolma and other family recipes feature handmade cheeses, just-caught fish and vegetables from the family farm. StatherosRestaurant.gr

BALI, INDONESIA WHERE An hour east of the hustle and bustle of Seminyak, remote East Bali remains one of the island’s few untrodden destinations. WHY Lush and peaceful, it’s free of the surfers, selfie sticks and Eat Pray Love crowds that descend on Seminyak, Uluwatu and Ubud. You’ll fall asleep to crashing waves rather than DJ tracks. WHEN TO GO April through September are the sunniest, driest months, with June through August bringing higher prices. Low season, October through April, is monsoon season, but the weather is more windy than wet in this part of the country. WHERE TO STAY Set in a secluded coconut grove on a black-sand beach at the foot of sacred Mount Agung, Alila Manggis is a haven for tranquilityseeking honeymooners. All 55 rooms have ocean views and private terraces overlooking a central pool and a garden overflowing with pink bougainvillea and frangipani. White-sand beaches are a short drive away and remarkably free of visitors. From $127; AlilaHotels.com/manggis WHAT NOT TO MISS Learn about the agricultural practices of Balinese farmers during a cooking class at Alila Manggis. You’ll don boots and a rice hat and help harvest produce in the hotel’s organic garden, then assist the chef in preparing a traditional Balinese lunch. From $70 for a half-day cooking class.

WHERE Located on the East Cape, this off-the-radar paradise is about 40 minutes from the San Jose del Cabo International Airport. WHY Cabo’s tourist corridor is lined with flashy resorts and rough surf, while the East Cape is a 75-mile stretch of empty, swimmable beaches and sleepy fishing villages. WHEN TO GO The weather is warm and sunny yearround. Summer is optimal for surfing, and spring and fall are prime times for fishing. The largest ray migration comes through the Sea of Cortez in May and June, and whale watching peaks in winter. WHERE TO STAY Situated on two miles of unspoiled beach, the newly opened Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas is the region’s first luxury resort. An oasis of exclusivity, the 141-room property has 18 acres of organic farms, orchards and a private marina. Staff can arrange everything from sunset sails and ATV adventures to waterfall viewings. From $850; FourSeasons.com/loscabos WHAT NOT TO MISS Jacques Cousteau famously called Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve “the aquarium of the world.” Home to hundreds of species of fish, including sea bass, angel fish and giant groupers, it’s a bucket list destination for snorkel and dive enthusiasts. Swimming amid a school of silvery horse-eye jacks is an essential photo op. From $229 for a full-day of scuba; Cabo-Adventures.com

A postwedding trip that includes one or more of the newlyweds’ friends.

A honeymoon where you primarily focus on ways to take in a specific destination’s culture (like appreciating art in Italy, learning how to dance in Spain or theaterhopping in London) instead of lying on the beach and drinking mai tais for a week straight— not that there’s anything wrong with that.

A prewedding trip to relax, unwind and connect about a month or two before the wedding day.

E (HONEY)M OO N

A honeymoon for couples who already have children and want to make the trip a family affair. Or if a couple is having their honeymoon at the site of their destination wedding and their families turn it into a vacation for themselves too (becoming a familymoon by default).

A trip that’s primarily focused on— you guessed it—food and drinks. Whether it’s pasta in Italy, cheese in France or a wine tour in South Africa, planning out your eating and drinking takes priority on this moon.

A series of two or more shorter trips taken throughout the first year (or so) of marriage, rather than one long trip taken right after saying “I do.”

A short trip (usually less than a week) newlyweds take if they’re not going on their actual honeymoon for a while— usually due to saving up vacation days at work or budgeting for a dream getaway.

PROGRAMS In honor of the couple’s modern meet on Bumble, bee motifs made a regular appearance, even on their programs. CEREMONY The pair’s friend Dave officiated the service that included personal vows and a ring warming—when each guest holds the wedding bands, imbuing them with wellwishes. PUPPY LOVE The dog owners dressed Bruce up in a blue velvet bow tie. WELCOME BAG SWAG Alyssa poured candles and scented them with “Hudson Valley” notes (think: cozy cashmere and cinnamon), which she then paired with matches personalized with a metallic gold bee. “His” and “her” cookies were a nod to when she and Andrew swapped treats on their third date, each sure they had the better recipe. They invited guests to weigh in on which one they liked better, though the verdict’s still out. UPDO Alyssa’s vintage bobby pins were abuzz.

hough Alyssa Longobucco (29) is our Senior Style & Planning Editor here at The Knot, even she couldn’t have planned for this much serendipity in her and Andrew Bottenhofer’s (29 and a senior accountant at Kobalt Music) search for a venue. Because the two went to college in the Hudson Valley and got engaged there, it felt like the right spot to mark their next milestone. “On a whim, I contacted Audrey’s Farmhouse to see if they hosted weddings, only to learn that they were building a brand-new barn and greenhouse across the street from the original inn,” Alyssa says. “It felt like kismet.” With Andrew running point on the budget and contracts, Alyssa got moving on her DIY to-do list, even teaming up with her mom to perfect a custom shade of dusty-blue dye that they used to stain the cheesecloth table runners. — B EC K Y M U R R AY

SEAT DISPLAY Alyssa added guests’ names onto leather tags using her Cricut. She then attached them, with hammered brass tags denoting table numbers, onto bud vases, which her dad distressed. MENUS A suede paper “banner” attached with dustyblue or black wax finished off the cards. FAVORS Alyssa’s mom bottled a batch of her legendary limoncello for everyone to take home. LAWN GAMES Cocktail hour included rounds of cornhole played on boards that Alyssa designed. DRINKS Guests sipped three signature cocktails: the “Bumble,” with gin, fresh lemon juice and homemade lavender simple syrup, the “Junebug,” coined after Andrew’s nickname for Alyssa, with vodka, rosemary simple syrup and red grapefruit, and “The Bruce,” named after their pup, with tequila, thyme simple syrup and lemon juice.

Alyssa and Andrew honored their grandparents with sentimental touches. Andrew’s tie pin and watch both belonged to his grandfather, and his boutonniere included his grandparents’ favorite flower: lily of the valley. To celebrate Alyssa’s late Italian grandmother, her mom and aunts perfected her unwritten recipe for “Nonni” cookies, making more than 400 in coordinating wedding colors for guests to take home in bags as favors.

CREW “Millwick has a lot of greenery, so we chose colors that would make our friends stand out,” Marcia says. INVITES “We looked at restaurant branding for ideas, knowing we wanted them to be modern, colorful and fun,” Marcia says. FIRST DANCE One of Sarah’s bridesmaids, who’s a former ballroom dancer, choreographed their disco routine to “Last Dance” by Donna Summer. FLOWERS Loving its tropical vibes, the two first considered Palm Springs for their wedding. Instead, they incorporated the spirit of the city with bright florals, like dwarf pineapples, pink anthurium and yellow craspedia. HOME VIDEO Marcia filmed their Singaporean neighborhood and flat, plus their calico cats, Porridge and Sambal, to project on a loop. VOWS Totally unplanned, Marcia vowed to always wash the dishes, and Sarah promised to always cook for Marcia—but not to wash the dishes.

arcia Ong (37 and a cinematographer) and Sarah Benjamin (29 and a TV producer, cook and host) have a meet-cute made for TV, and, in fact, that’s precisely where it all began—on the set of “Cooking For Love,” though “neither of us can agree on who made the first move,” Sarah says. Fastforward to the proposal, where Sarah made their talk of marriage “official” by proposing to Marcia with a plastic ring complete with a flashing, color-changing diamond. “It was silly but just right,” Sarah says, which is exactly the attitude the Singapore residents brought to wedding planning. They settled on Los Angeles, where many of Marcia’s friends live, for their retro celebration. “We stayed away from white and pastels and went straight for strong primary colors,” Marcia says. Then, they partied on. — B M

CENTERPIECES Flowers took center stage at the reception, with gold vases of acacia, eucalyptus and freesia, plus foliage foraged from the Detroit area, towering over tables. PATTERN PLAY Adi added more color to his suit with bright chevron socks. TABLE NUMBERS Autumn also hand-poured the resin and pressed the flowers for the table numbers. “It was so fun,” she says.

The pair envisioned a wedding inspired by the gardens of their favorite conservatories and parks—and brought them to life with plenty of DIY, from the invites to the table numbers. “Autumn and I did a lot of arts and crafts,” Adi says, “but we work very well together.” — LB

unter McGrady (26 and a model and an advocate) rocked wedding gowns long before she met Brian Keys (42 and VP of creative direction at an ad agency)—proof that it isn’t always bad luck. Back then, Hunter was shooting with Watters, the same brand she tapped to design her two custom wedding dresses about eight years later. “What I wanted was a formfitting, sexy dress because I’m proud of my plus-size body, and I wanted to show it off,” Hunter says of designing her “dream” ceremony gown. After saying “I do,” she changed into a high-neck number styled after Meghan Markle’s reception dress. For Brian, music topped his “must” list. They found a one-man band to play piano for the ceremony and sax for cocktail hour, then deejay the reception. However, what Hunter calls “the best way to top off the best day” was completely spontaneous: The newlyweds made a late-night In-N-Out Burger run.

We have a great relationship, and I wanted her to know how much I love her.”

I’ve had my wedding planned since I was 14. LOCATION The duo invited their families from Miami, Texas and Colombia to a beachfront getaway in Cancun.

SHOE GAME Rachel finished her outfit with blingy dancing shoes: glittery studded Louboutin boots.

ou probably remember the beginning of Rachel Lindsay (34 and an attorney and media personality) and Bryan Abasolo’s (39 and a chiropractor) story, but here’s a recap: “We met on The Bachelorette in 2017,” Rachel says. “Bryan said hello, spoke to me in Spanish, asked if I’d ever dated a Colombian man and told me I was in trouble. We were hooked from that moment.” After what Rachel calls an “unconventional” (read: televised) engagement in Spain, the couple took two years to build and plan before tying the knot. “We needed the time to focus on our relationship off camera,” Rachel says. “We wanted a strong foundation.” The pair headed to paradise—Cancun, Mexico, to be exact—for a tropical ceremony full of sentimental nods to their story, from Colombian bites at the welcome bash to a sand ceremony. “Bryan’s vows mirrored the love he expressed to me from the moment we met,” Rachel says.

CEREMONY “It was important for my pastor to come from Dallas,” Rachel says. “He knows us and has counseled us.”

TABLESCAPES Geometric terrariums and modern numbers topped tables alongside roses and hydrangeas.

#MAKETRADITION It was only fitting for the self-titled #RnB to pack their party with their fave music, from Lil Duval to Maxwell. “Our first dance was ‘Fortunate’ by Maxwell,” Rachel says. “Bryan was adamant about it, and it also happens to be my mom’s favorite song.”

We brought two families together in celebrating life and love and had the best time doing it. The dance floor was packed all night, but even better, our loved ones made new connections.” -Rachel RECEPTION The newlyweds celebrated alfresco as a custom monogram lit up their dance moves.

INGREDIENTS

SORORITY STROLL Rachel invited her sorority sisters to hit the floor for the customary Delta Sigma Theta strut at the reception.

WEDDING GOWNS 101 Searching for the one? Study up on everything you need to know before you hit the salon.

A GUIDE TO DRESS SILHOUETTES

Ball Gown

Perfect for the bride looking to make a statement, there’s nothing subtle about a ball gown. This classic silhouette has a fitted bodice and a voluminous full skirt.

A-line

Mermaid

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a skirt that flares out in—you guessed it—an A shape. Consider it a halfway point between a sheath and a ball gown.

Va-va-voom. This sultry silhouette has a fitted bodice, waist and hips, and dramatically flares out at the knee. It’s a great option if you want to show off your curves.

Trumpet

Sheath

This slim silhouette A toned-down version skims over the body, of the mermaid, the falling straight to skirt of this gown flares the floor below the out just below the hips, hips. What a sheath creating a semi-full dress lacks in volume, shape (like the bell it makes up for in of a trumpet) without versatility—it works with nearly every fabric. any extra volume.

Empire A dress for the Grecian goddess in us all, the empire style has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance that lengthens the body.

S H O P E A R L Y A designer wedding gown will take months to create and a series of alterations to fit your body perfectly. In other words, it’s not the kind of garment you can toss into an online shopping cart and have show up on your doorstep two days later. Book your first appointment 9 to 12 months before your wedding date. If you’re shopping closer to your wedding, you may be limited to samples or off-the-rack gowns. A L W A Y S B O O K A N A P P O I N T M E N T Scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention. If you’re the type who hates feeling rushed when shopping, make an appointment on a slow weekday morning or afternoon. L I M I T Y O U R E N T O U R A G E Bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t. Enlist one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown that best suits your style and not feel pressured by too many opinions.

H I D D E N C O S T S A D D U P Remember, your wedding gown budget doesn’t just include the dress. Your veil or headpiece, accessories, undergarments and alterations will also add to your bottom line. Factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your shopping budget. T R U S T I S K E Y Even if a gown doesn’t look amazing on the hanger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look amazing on you. Be open to what an experienced consultant thinks will work for your body (after all, they’ve done this before). Bottom line: The dress you end up loving might be different than what you originally pictured, and that’s okay. S A L O N S C A N S O M E T I M E S T A K E R E Q U E S T S Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer, doesn’t mean it’ll have the exact wedding dress you’ve been wanting to try on. But, if you phone in advance and ask about a specific style, your consultant may be able to request a loaner sample of that gown especially for you.

ANTIGUA 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW 1

Antigua sits smack-dab in the center of the Caribbean Islands. 203

2 The island has more than 350 chalky-white public beaches. Some of the best include Dickenson Bay (for restaurant-hopping and people-watching) and Half Moon Bay (for windsurfing). 3

4 The Antiguan climate is one of the most idyllic in all of the Caribbean, thanks to constant sea breezes and trade winds. The hot season runs from May to November.

Don’t leave without spending Sunday afternoon at Shirley Heights Lookout, a restaurant perched on a bluff on the south side of the island. You’ll get a stunning panoramic view of English Harbour and the island of Montserrat, not to mention some lip-smacking barbecue. 5

3 The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands.

Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 4

5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse duty-free bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 6

7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera.

Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 9

10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane ride from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike.

About 700 islands make up The Bahamas, tossed across the lower Atlantic between Florida and Cuba. Only 30 of them are inhabited. 1

BARBADOS 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84 and 88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, T-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast.

Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 7

8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’tmiss Creole restaurant.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

JAMAICA 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW 1 The best way to get around is in Jamaican Union of Travelers Association (JUTA)– licensed taxis.

Montego Bay is definitely a must-see. Located near the airport on the northwest side of the island, “MoBay” is perfect for golf getaways and short honeymoon trips. Ever since Sandals opened the first all-inclusive resort there, it’s been the top destination for young newlyweds.

December to April

Bob Marley’s birthplace, Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 3

Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.

To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 6

7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay.

While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 8

9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour.

Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves that have never seen the light of day! 10

5 The Blue Lagoon was filmed in Port Antonio, called the “most exquisite port on Earth.” It’s a less-developed gem on the northeast side of the island.

LAST LOOK

WINTER WARDROBE

“I joked that my blue snow boots were my ‘something blue,’” Merril says. She paired them with her nearly 20-year-old debutante gown, which she updated with a crew neck sweater to make the dress more cold-weather ready.

It was Josh’s dream to ski down the mountain after the ceremony, and he surprised me with this yellow streamer just as we took off—an ode to the ‘ribbon dancing’ tradition he picked up as an off-trail heli-skiing instuctor in Alaska,” Merril says. “Our hashtag was #AllTimeConditions, and my husband lives by that phrase. We never planned for a blizzard in March, but in the moment, we just had to go with it.”
