ELAINE WELTEROTH + JONATHAN SINGLETARY When Elaine, Jonathan and I sat down (virtually) for the interview on page 52, it was actually the third time Elaine and I had spoken about including her in The Knot. While she did make an appearance in a registry story in the Spring 2020 issue, there was a mutual feeling that there would be a bigger and more meaningful moment to work together—so we agreed to keep talking. I couldn’t have known just how big or how meaningful that moment would be.

lot of couples share their stories in this issue. There are aspirational stories of weddings past that fill me with hope for weddings of the future. There are stories of to-be-weds who found creative ways to celebrate their love amid a global pandemic that fill me with awe. But there’s also our cover story, which tells of one couple’s fear on their wedding day because of racism that has long plagued our country. This fills me with anger, sadness and a desire and need to do better. We haven’t done right by the Black community in the pages of our magazines, and I pledge to improve. At press time, we’re finalizing the specifics of that long-term, sustainable change. But I want to hear from you, our readers, on how we can do better. I’m listening, I’m learning and I’m committed. Please email me at kristen@theknot.com.

STYLE

FIND YOUR WEDDING We know—you’re probably wondering where you should even start (totally normal, btw). First, download our app and take our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe, (think: industrial with bohemian details). We’ll generate your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). EDITOR TIP Think about what you love as a couple—are you

Even if they’re limited, make sure you get shots of all the details you’ve spent time planning and creating. A few close-up photos of your cake, the place settings, your shoes and any stationery items are worth capturing. But the most important thing is to have plenty of photos of you, your partner and your guests! When you look back on your wedding album in 50 years, the photos of you and your besties on the dance floor are going to bring you joy, long after you’ve forgotten what flowers were in your bouquet or what color your table linens were. Think about all the moments and memories you’re most looking forward to and share that information with your photographer.

CAREY LOWE Designer + Founder, The Idea Emporium Carey is the mastermind behind The Idea Emporium, a custom event branding firm that creates high-touch stationery and design details to tell couples’ stories.

I encourage couples to skip the theme and instead go for a feeling. To begin, gather some key images of your venue and design plan (from your floral proposal to a snap of the linens and rentals you plan to use) and lay them out together. When you look at those images collectively, how do they feel? Maybe they evoke something romantic or classic. On the other hand, does the vibe read as modern or edgy? The objective here is to match that impression to a typeface that will help you build out a design direction. By selecting an invitation suite that uses type without graphics to communicate design, you can subliminally share what to expect with your guests without the presence of an obvious theme. From there, bring in your color palette with the envelopes and ink color. Use the postage selection as an opportunity for a nod to your personalities. (Bonus: These details will make the invitation stand out from a sea of bills when guests receive it. You’ll have them smiling before they’ve even opened the envelope.) And voila! You’ve totally set the tone for the day without a theme in sight.

originally contacted Elaine’s team under the context of COVID-19. Elaine and Jonathan’s viral stoop wedding is a beautiful example of love conquering all—even during a pandemic. I thought their story aligned perfectly with a bigger feature we were doing around weddings and the impact of the virus (see page 134). But just a few weeks into our conversations came the harrowing and tragic death of George Floyd at the hands of the police. A killing that had been preceded by Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other Black people. As protests took place across the US and the world, it became clear that Elaine and Jonathan’s voices should be heard in the context of Black Lives Matter. Even with the weight of the current situation getting heavier by the day, when I connected with Elaine and Jonathan over Google Hangouts, their energy was joyful and positive. “One thing we’ve been talking about is this term ‘Black Life Matters’ as well,” Jonathan tells me. “It’s important to smile, it’s important to find moments of joy, it’s important to find peace in the storm, it’s important to find gratitude even

when it’s difficult.” He points out the sad fact that this isn’t anything new for Black people. “This thing is loud right now, but African-Americans and Black people have been dealing with tragedy and trauma and finding ways to smile through it, laugh through it, dance through it, celebrate through it, connect to our communities through it as our only way of surviving and being resilient,” Jonathan says. “We’ve literally been told that our wedding was one of the brightest moments in a dark time that kind of got darker. It definitely was for us. People are able to kind of hold on to that memory—and we’re able to hold on to that memory—and I think those moments fuel you to be able to get through darker times like this.” Looking at Jonathan, Elaine answers simply, “That was beautiful,” before looking back to me and joking, “Who’s the writer in this family?” Perfectly exemplifying the point her new husband just made—smiling through pain. “I think we can’t only ever say ‘Black Lives Matter’ in the context of Black bodies—Black dead bodies. We need to understand deeply, every single day, ‘Black Life Matters,’ and that’s what this fight is for,” Elaine says. “It is for Black ››

life, it is for Black love, it is for Black joy, it is for Black peace. Not more Black pain, not more Black trauma, not more Black murders and hashtags. This is almost like a battle for Black people to keep being humanized. It’s why celebrating Black love is important because we still have to defend why Black lives matter. I think when you see examples of Black love in this time, it helps to contextualize. It helps bring us all to the table, and it helps us see each other in this.” The story Elaine shares next about the pair’s May nuptials mirrors an unimaginable number of situations and events Black people experience every day due to systematic racism— for Jonathan and Elaine it happened to take place on a day that should be brimming with joy and hope, not fear. “I was not sure that I wanted to share [it],” Elaine says. “But it felt necessary to share now.” EL AI N E: The thing about our wedding and the way that we

shared it—it’s like there was this glossy, Instagram version of the wedding video, but there was also a moment [the video team] didn’t capture that really was the defining moment of our wedding and, honestly, a defining moment of our union. And a moment that really illuminates what it is like to be Black in

E W: And he’s yelling. J S: Like, ‘Clear the streets!’ E W: ‘Clear the streets. Disperse.’ It was aggressive. Literally, the police interrupted the moment where we were supposed to kiss—have our first kiss as husband and wife. I just thought, ‘What do we do?’ And I almost forgot to kiss him. In that moment, all of the most terrible things that I’ve seen take place between the police and Black bodies flashed before my eyes, and I could just feel the panic flood my veins. And I’m just like, ‘Have I put my community in danger? Have I put myself in danger?’ And as a Black person, when you see the police, you don’t think, ‘They’re just here to make sure everything’s going to be okay.’ You don’t see ‘protect and serve.’ You really see a symbol of danger. You see the red. And it triggers past traumas. I don’t know a single Black person in this country who has not had a negative experience with police. I personally have experienced it—more than once. And I don’t think people would ever think that about me because people have a false notion that you can educate yourself out of this kind of thing. That you can ascend in your career, or that a certain amount of social status or privilege could sort of insulate you from this kind of discrimination, and it’s just not true.

Jonathan has gone through things in his life with the police that he never should’ve [had to go through]. That he never deserved and that no man deserves, but this is very present, real trauma. And that [trauma] gets brought up every time we see the police. So, even in the pinnacle of a joyous moment, it tears at the very core of our humanity, and it reminds us that we are not afforded the same pursuit of life, love and happiness—that’s not afforded to so many Black people. And our love, our joy, it is fragile. Because in a moment, you can go from being celebrated and on a high and feeling joyful and being in a state of love with your partner to being...to honestly being flat-faced on the ground with someone’s knee on your neck. Like, that’s a reality. It sounds like hyperbole, but that’s a reality in this country. To have to contend with that and even just go through that emotion and the thoughts of that [during our wedding], it threatened to steal our joy. It threatened to steal our moments and rob us of this celebration that we had painstakingly preserved. And I just remember looking at Jonathan and I was like, ‘Okay, he’s smiling. He’s okay.’ Everyone in the community was cheering us on. And I thought, ‘We’re okay. Let’s do this. Let’s do this. Let’s do this. Let’s do this anyway. Let’s do this

America every day—trying to celebrate your love, trying to exist joyfully, trying to create a moment of celebration for our lives. Obviously we got married in the middle of a pandemic, so, naturally, we took health precautions very seriously. One of the main parameters of the wedding ceremony was that it had to be a socially distanced ceremony. So rather than having a seating chart, I had a standing chart. I had people’s names written in chalk on IT IS FOR the sidewalk, and we literally measured with BLACK LIFE, measuring tape so that they were each 10 feet IT IS FOR apart at all times. I took pains to make sure BLACK LOVE, this was going to be safe for people and that we IT IS FOR B L A C K J O Y, I T were not breaking any rules. Everyone had masks, IS FOR everyone had gloves and the community got a BLACK PEACE. heads up about it. So the community came out in NOT MORE masks! It was such an important day for us and BLACK PAIN. the community to have a reason to celebrate life and love and joy in a time of darkness. And right at the moment when our pastor said, ‘You may kiss the bride,’ his voice was drowned out by the sound of sirens—a police van. It pulls up and starts going in on his... J ONATHAN: Megaphone.

they were so aggressive and they never confirmed that they were going to let us go. They never actually said, ‘Oh, alright, alright.’ They never conceded. When she backed away from the [police] car and they started pulling out—she honestly didn’t know what they were going to do. And when they decided to just drive on by, I’ve never felt such relief in my life. I was also in disbelief because that’s not the outcome we’ve seen play out between cops and Black communities. But then the whole block erupted in cheers. It was such an emotional moment. And I came out from behind the car I was hiding behind. [I was] literally worried that I was going to get arrested on my wedding day. I was worried about my friends who had shown up for me. And when [the police] passed, I was out of breath. I thought I was going to have an asthma attack, and I just dropped on the ground and I just started crying. I just felt like, ‘Thank you God for giving us...for just this one day that you preserved us. Just this one moment that you preserved for us.’ But there were people there who are not Black and haven’t experienced that exact same scene. Like, they were there [at our wedding], they saw it happen, but they didn’t experience it the way I experienced it. And that in of itself illuminates the difference in our lived experience as Black people. Even if

we are in the same business—we are in the same level of our business—we could be the greatest of friends, but you don’t know what it’s like to be a Black person in America. And that moment was another example of that in my life. It was such an incredible thing that we were able to preserve that moment. That I could stand up, look at Jonathan smile and be reassured. Our friend who was the DJ played our IT WAS SO song again, and we were just like, ‘Okay, we’re SPECIAL AND alive. Like, we are good, everybody’s okay. Let’s YET SO MARKED BY do this damn dance again.’ We wanted to do SOME OF THE it again, and this time without the cops trying DEEPEST to bust us...interrupt us. And it was such a T R AUMAS WE triumphant, liberating, emotional moment that CARRY WITH everyone participated in with us. It was like US EVERY DAY a wedding miracle. It was so special and yet so AS BLACK marked by some of...the deepest traumas that PEOPLE. we carry with us every day as Black people. It illuminates this idea of what it’s like to be Black in America in a way that words can’t. In a way that you had to just see the video. And so that’s why I decided that after we put out this picture-perfect, edited video that everyone was so

anyway—I’m not giving this to them. We’re not doing anything wrong.’ And we just kissed, and we held hands, and the music started and we danced into the street. But I will tell you: My mouth was dry, my hands were...my palms...I am sweating just repeating it because it was so traumatizing. I feel like I have PTSD from it. Like, my hands and my palms were sweaty. It was as if what we were doing was an act of defiance. It was like a peaceful demonstration. Dancing in that moment and our first dance was a form of peaceful resistance, and I felt like I was being held by the love and support of the community. But I was scared. Jonathan and I smiled, and we were dancing, but he knew and I knew, and we were asking ourselves, ‘What are we doing? Are we okay? Are we okay? Is this all over? Is everything going to end? Is it over? Have we made a huge mistake? Are they calling backup?’ I’m just thinking of the worst-case scenarios and...it really does feel like our wedding planner was God. In that moment, I really believe it was nothing other than an act of God that intervened and made those cops have a change of heart. It also doesn’t hurt to have a best friend with dimples and long legs and a Southern belle accent—and she worked her charm on those men. And even as she was speaking with them, she said

Accepting Elaine’s prestigious NAACP Image Award

uplifted by—which was important and served an important purpose in that moment—I decided it was important to share the Zoom video. The crummy, gritty, Zoom footage of that moment, because we don’t exist outside of that here. Even in our joy, even in our love, that fear still exists, and it’s important that folks see that and remember it. It’s so emotional…it’s so emotional just thinking about it. But it also reminds me of why it is important. There’s no way we could have known that when we planned our wedding in the middle of a pandemic, that just three weeks later, the world would need a moment like our wedding as much as we do now to get through this moment. (Looking at Jonathan) And you said it so eloquently, I don’t need to underscore it. But I think it just felt like, again, God was our wedding planner and we were obedient. We did the thing that we were supposed to do without even knowing how it was going to be used to bring joy to people in dark times. Not knowing how far and wide this was going to reach, and not knowing really what purpose it served. But now in retrospect, in hindsight, the way we did our wedding just feels more and more significant as the days go on. It feels more and more like we understand why we were called to do it exactly that way and in exactly this moment.

Q+A

ANNA SHEFFIELD This jewelry designer and boho tastemaker pulled off a gorgeous New Mexico wedding in just three months. Here are her tips.

Q:

W H AT AR E Y O U R B I G G E S T T AK E AW A Y S FRO M PLAN N I N G A W E D D I N G I N 90 D AY S ? The short timeline forced us to stay true to important details. We discussed what type of rituals were nonnegotiable. For me, it was important to have my goddaughter carry the rings and my stepfather walk me down the aisle. Emahn wanted to be sure we acknowledged those who were not with us, namely his grandmother, Mary, and my dad. There were some trade-offs, but what stood out were the things we did include, not the ones we didn’t.

Q:

A LOVE FOR ALL SÉZANE Calling all bridechillas. French brand Sézane’s stunning new drop is effortlessly chic—and comes with a hopeful message. The Ceremony collection features a range of vintage-inspired, French-embroidered wedding gowns and handmade accessories. “It was important to continue with the launch of our Ceremony capsule this year, not only to honor the work of my teams and our ateliers, but also to look forward to a future of brighter days and celebrations,” founder Morgane Sézalory says. What’s not to love about that? From $185, Sezane.com

W H AT ARE S O M E W AY S T O S I M PLI F Y T HE W E D D I N G PLAN N I N G PRO C E S S ? Rather than plan every last detail, we aimed for a cohesive overall design with hero elements repeated throughout. For example, we leaned into big Mexican paper flowers and banners, which were inexpensive and easily ordered online, but were still on theme and sentimental for both of us.

Q:

W H AT ’ S Y O U R AD V I C E T O C O U PLE S C HAN GI N G U P T H E I R N U PT I ALS ( S AY , A S U M M ER WED D I N G B E C O M E S A F ALL O N E ) D U E T O C O V I D -1 9? Choose simplicity. With jewelry design, I tend to keep things pure, so they have harmony in both form and function. Choosing a simple wedding aesthetic can help make your nuptials less dependent on the season. If your wedding theme is timeless, a shift from summer to fall might call for some logistical changes, but it’s easier than switching from, say, a super-colorful theme to a harvest-inspired one.

Just like the song, this recipe has a funky uptown vibe as a cross between a Manhattan and a classic old-fashioned. It’s perfect for whiskey lovers and will be sure to encourage guests to get up and get down on the dance floor.

Inspired by the elements Earth (cucumber), wind (fresh thyme) and fire (jalapeno), this cocktail combines the heat of September with the simplicity of summer, perfectly embodying the groovy vibes of this staple wedding song.

CONSIDERING GOING LAB GROWN? HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW.

D

eBeers may have launched the tagline "A Diamond Is Forever" for their now-famous marketing campaign way back in 1948, but the über-sparkly stone is still the go-to gem of modern couples. According to The Knot 2019 Jewelry and Engagement Study, which surveyed over 21,000 engaged or recently married people, 83 percent of engagement rings include a diamond center stone. However, due to their rare and thus pricey nature (depending on its quality, the average 1 carat diamond can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $25,000), opting for one of these gorgeous gems can be cost prohibitive for couples on a budget. Enter: lab-grown diamonds. An increasingly popular option, lab-grown stones have disrupted the way jewelers and consumers approach diamond engagement rings. The synthetic method of creating this rare gem has made buying diamonds more accessible to cost-conscious consumers looking for a less expensive alternative to natural stones—but with all the same stunning sparkle and durability.

hot chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. Under these conditions the gases begin to stick to the seed, growing a diamond carbon atom by atom. Fun fact: While natural diamonds can take around 3.3 billion years to form and then must be extracted from deep in the earth, the lab-grown alternative can be created in as little as a few weeks. Once finished, gemologists cut and polish lab-grown stones the same as they would natural ones.

Lab-grown stones are optically identical to mined ones.

LAB-GROWN VS. NATURAL DIAMONDS

So, what exactly are these futuristicsounding rocks made of, and how exactly are they created? The simple answer is that advanced technology allows scientists to mimic the exact conditions in the earth’s mantle where diamonds formed billions of years ago, to create stones that are nearly identical to what you'd find in nature (more on this later). There are two ways to create a lab-grown diamond. Both involve starting with the “seed” (a tiny piece) of another diamond that eventually turns into a fully formed stone. The first method is High Temperature, High Pressure (HTHP), where the diamond seed is exposed to crushing pressure and extreme heat (think: a pressure cooker on steroids). The second and newer way to create a lab-grown diamond is through the use of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), where a diamond is grown from a seed that is placed in a sealed, extremely

ARE L AB- GROWN STO N ES

E C O - F R I E N D LY ? It’s a bummer, but there isn’t a totally “green” way to produce diamonds. While created stones don’t impact ecosystems in the same way diamond mines do, they also come at a cost. Both HTHP and CVD require lots of energy, leaving behind a carbon footprint.

ways to tell them apart. Most natural diamonds contain tiny amounts of nitrogen, and their lab-grown counterparts do not. Gemologists can test for the presence of nitrogen, which can usually indicate whether or not a stone was found in nature. Another option: Larger labs have access to expensive machinery specially designed to distinguish between labgrown diamonds and mined diamonds by testing a stone's fluorescence. These machines expose the diamond to special light waves that cause it to fluoresce (or glow). Lab-grown diamonds tend to fluoresce much more brightly than mined diamonds do. Another major difference? The cost. While the exact price of any lab-grown diamond depends on the quality and size of the stone you choose, they are generally less expensive than their mined counterparts. Since lab-grown stones have a lower resale value and take considerably less time and manpower to create, they can cost anywhere from 10 to 40 percent less.

WHAT IS A LAB-GROWN DIAMOND?

Although they are man-made stones, lab-grown diamonds (sometimes deceptively labeled "synthetic diamonds") are the real deal. Both created and natural diamonds are made from pure, crystallized carbon, possess the same ability to disperse light of different colors (read: give off the pretty sparkle we love), are extremely durable and come in the same array of shapes and sizes. While created and mined stones are both diamonds, there are a couple of

How one Pennsylvania couple got creative and planned an ecofriendly wedding full of meaningful details.

98

BY DANI BROWN AS TOLD TO LOUIS BARAGONA PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSEY ZERN PHOTOGRAPHY

’d been trying to live a low-waste lifestyle for around three years, which is also when Mike and I got engaged. It all started when I was living in Thailand and teaching English. While there, I noticed a lot of plastic pollution, so I began trying out reusable options like glass and aluminum. Once I got back to America and wedding planning was underway, we decided to make our celebration as eco-friendly as possible. Sustainability had become a part of our everyday lives, so it felt right for our wedding to have that same ethos. The surprising thing was that sustainable options often made more sense for our budget and our style, and just

TKM20FALL_STYPLAN_Essay.L [P].indd 98

lasted longer. We wanted all of our décor to not just fit our vibe—which was eclectic and thrifty— but also to be useful for us and our guests beyond the wedding day. Our mug favors, which we got from secondhand stores, were one of our guests’ favorite parts. People tell us, “Every day I drink coffee from that mug,” and though we chose that as an ecofriendly option, it ended up being even more meaningful. Guests also took home our potted plant centerpieces, and a friend gave me old table numbers to reuse. Other details required working with our vendors or a little collaboration. A good friend designed our invitations, and I made sure they were printed on recycled paper. When it came to flatware, we had a conversation with our caterer about our wishes, who then offered us bamboo and wood options. We were surprised by all the ways we could go the sustainable route—all we had to do was ask. I’m proud of our efforts—you don’t have to be perfect or totally zero waste to make a difference.

TIPS

Peep our best info below to guarantee you’re doing this whole registry thing just right.

MONTHS

1 FIRST OFF, DEFINITELY REGISTER We get it—asking for gifts can feel weird. But saying “I do” is a big deal, and loved ones are going to want to celebrate! Think of a registry as a helpful road map to your taste and needs, not a greedy gift grab.

2 FROM LEFT: GRANT CORNETT/ART PARTNER LICENSING; ALICE DESIGN/NOUN PROJECT; MILINDA COUREY/NOUN PROJECT; CLAIRE BENOIST

START EARLY It may take you a bit to perfect your list, so start early. You’ll want to have your registry live before the invites for your first wedding-related party (think: an engagement bash) go out.

3 VARY THE PRICES It’s ok to be all *heart eyes* over a fancy smart TV—that’s what cash funds are for! That being said, be sure to register for items in a range of price points so every guest can find something to fit their budget.

4 CONSIDER HOW YOU LIVE There are no rules or things you have to include. Our best advice? Look at how you actually live together, whether you’re perma small space dwellers or need to fill up a new house in the ’burbs.

Q+A

REAL TALK

We’re tackling tough etiquette Qs—feel free to rip out this page and hand it to any nosy family members too.

Q:

W E H AD T O PO S T PO N E O U R W E D D I N G D U E T O C O V I D -1 9— S H O U LD W E T AK E D O W N O U R R E G I S T RY ? These are incredibly unusual circumstances—most couples scheduled to wed this year had to delay their celebrations. For that reason, all etiquette rules regarding a “postponed” wedding go out the window. When it comes to your registry, we suggest leaving it live. Not only have you worked hard on your wish list, but it can feel like one more defeat to take it down. Leaving it up will soften the blow a bit and continue to make gifting easy for guests. You may be surprised at the number of people that want to send you a little token of love off your registry during this time!

Q:

I S I T O K AY F O R U S T O RE G I S T E R IF IT’S OUR SECOND WEDDING? For sure. Our motto: Every wedding (and love story!) is worthy of celebration, so don’t feel like you have to forgo the typical milestones just because you’ve walked down the aisle before. That being said, approach the registry process with grace and recognize that while there are many guests that will want to gift you something, some may deem

it unnecessary due to it being your second wedding. Don’t take it personally and know you can always buy any favorite picks postwedding.

Q:

W E ’ R E E LO PI N G AND SEN D I N G O UT “ J U S T M ARRI E D ” CARD S—I S I T R U D E T O PU T A R E G I S T RY O N T HERE? If you’re just sending out an announcement card and not formally celebrating with any guests, it’s probably best to skip a registry. However, if you plan to host a postelopement bash (like a beach barbecue or casual cocktail party), it’s totally fine to include a registry on those invitations. Otherwise, forgo the formal registry, but have a few items in mind in case friends and family ask what you’d like.

Q:

HOW DO I ACTUALLY TELL MY GUESTS ABOUT OUR REGISTRY? Your wedding website is about to become your BFF. It’s the perfect place to host need-to-know info for guests, and the ideal spot to include your wish list. Seamlessly link your registry on The Knot to your wedding website, then include the URL on an info card packaged into your wedding day invitation suite (and on any preparty invites too).

We’ve made things better than ever to suit how you’re planning in 2020. Add all the things you want— from anywhere you want— and manage it all on The Knot Registry with a slew of new features that are about to make your life oh-so-easy. We’ve curated an impressive catalogue of thousands of products for you to shop right from your landing page. Plus, you can browse fave sites (from Etsy to Food52 and REI) and add to your wish list. The end result? A one-stop shop that’s easy to navigate and guarantees you’ll start newlywed life off on a very stylish foot.

The Knot Registry makes asking for cash easy (and totally not tacky, we promise). Get the 411 on our favorite feature, plus inspiration to kick off your own cash fund daydreams.

Q: H O W D O W E G E T T H E M O N E Y ?

Think of it as basically a mini savings account you create on your registry for guests to contribute to. It’s totally free to use and can be geared toward anything that tickles your fancy—from couples’ massages on your honeymoon to a puppy adoption fund or mixology class at your favorite local bar. It’s that simple.

Q: W H E R E D O E S I T S H O W U P ? Right alongside other gifts on your registry! The great thing about a cash fund is that it feels like a tangible gift, so guests who want to know what they’re contributing to (instead of say, just writing you a check) feel like they’re gifting you something specific. You can customize each fund with an image and small blurb explaining the details.

Alright, we see you. The good news: Money gifted to you and your partner goes right into the bank account of your choice. That way, if you need to get a jump start on reservations (say, for that Game of Thrones tour on your honeymoon), the funds are available to you right away. Cool, right?

Q: H O W M A N Y C A N W E C R E A T E ? You can make as many as you want, for whatever amount you want. Guests have a lot of freedom when gifting, too—they can contribute whatever amount they’d like, making it a great way to ask for bigger items (like that new sofa you heart) and allowing guests to “go in on” gifts together.

MEHNDI The prewedding custom was a unique chance for the pair to share their culture with loved ones. “Many of our guests had never attended a mehndi celebration before, which made hosting their first experience extra special to us,” Shaiyanne says. BOTANICALS Since the couple’s venue is known for its iconic pink palace, most of the floral design stuck to a green palette to ensure they complemented the space. HAIR At the mehndi event, vibrant yellow flowers were in abundance—even in Shaiyanne’s hair. STATIONERY Bright floral illustrations on the invitations conveyed the day’s theme to guests from the very moment they hit mailboxes. As for the contents of the stationery, it was important to Shaiyanne and JP to begin with a prayer from the Quran.

P

lanning a destination wedding is a feat on its own, but Shaiyanne Dar (31 and an online retail business owner) and John (JP) Wakayama Carey (35 and a cinematographer) took things up a notch by planning two celebrations—a mehndi ceremony and Western nuptials— all from an ocean away. Beyond the nods to Shaiyanne’s Pakistani heritage, the couple honored her Filipina ethnicity with a halo-halo dessert bar. JP’s Japanese background was also celebrated with 1,001 paper cranes, which served as a golden (and auspicious) backdrop for their wedding cake. While much of the wedding connected to far-flung locales, Hawaiian details were celebrated just as prolifically. “My dress had tropical flowers representing Hawaii and colors similar to those my mom wore on her wedding day,” Shaiyanne says. — HAN NAH N OWAC K

FROZEN SIPS To stave off the tropical heat, guests enjoyed frozen virgin piña coladas garnished with pineapple chunks and edible blooms. EMBELLISHED UMBRELLAS Since the wedding ceremony was outside under the blazing sun, guests were offered multicolored parasols for shade that doubled as favors. SEASCAPE With sweeping views of the water, it’s easy to see why Shaiyanne and JP selected their venue. What’s not immediately evident, however, is their deeper tie to the space: Shaiyanne’s sister, Yasmin, said “I do” at the same property in 2012. VOW EXCHANGE Officiated by the imam of the mosque Shaiyanne grew up attending, the couple kept the ceremony “light and fun,” even working in music from The Beatles.

he first time Nicole Reber (38 and a marketing director) and Michael Martin (36 and a project manager) set out to plan their wedding, a large affair in Iowa, the vibe didn’t feel right—so much so, they called it off and jetted away to Bali for some R & R. Out of all that, one thing was clear: The wedding they wanted would need to be small and intimate. The secluded venue they settled on, about five hours away from an airport in southwest Texas, gave them the opportunity to focus on the people that meant the most to them. The move down south also brought extra significance to the day. “My grandmother was born in Texas,” Nicole says. “She adopted my mother from Mexico. The venue is located right near the border, which gave even more meaning to our ceremony.” —HN

rought together through their shared media careers, Brittney McCrae (30 and an entertainment marketing director) and Tracey Todd (31 and a digital strategy director) know how to make an editorial vision come to life. A cozy holiday vibe à la Richard Curtis (the screenwriter famous for Love Actually) was their theme. “The way you have to warm up with cocoa after a romp in the snow, the smell of pine and Christmas cookies baking in the oven and the omnipresence of love at the holidays: The way I feel at Christmastime is the way I wanted guests to feel on our day,” Brittney says. The weather was clear outside, but inside the historic hall, where they wed, it was a veritable whiteout. “I was adamant about everything being winter white and winter white only!” Brittney says. A 10-word Baha’i vow exchange and Jewish glass breaking were paired with music from Pride & Prejudice, a longtime favorite of Haleh’s, at the ceremony. The personalization also carried into the reception. Guided by seating assignments calligraphed onto brass bells that doubled as favors, guests entered a colorful, velvetfilled tent to discover a Persian tea display curated by Haleh’s mother and a canopy of chandeliers that warmed the space as the sun set. — H N

ACCESSORIZE It’s hard to believe, but the oodles of jewels Ian added to Troy’s lapel were actually just the leftovers from his other sparkling projects. ESCORT CARDS The couple used their seating assignments as an excuse to write a heartfelt note to every guest. “I thought it was such a simple, beautiful way of having an intimate connection with everyone on a day where you’re often pulled in a million directions,” Ian says. SENTIMENTAL FASHION Ian’s butterfly-appliquéd jacket included a subtle homage to family. “The lapel had bee appliqués on either side as a nod to my dad and stepmom who are bee keepers in their spare time,” he says. “My dad had just become a master beekeeper that summer.” COZY UP To stave off the evening chill, on-palette blankets were laid out for guests.

rom the moment Troy Solomon (30 and a singer) and Ian Mofford (25 and an influencer manager) conveyed their wedding dress code, guests knew they were in for a giant disco fete. The couple told guests to “pretend you’re going to the flashiest New Year’s Eve party ever— what would you want to wear?” That very sentiment set the tone for the sparkling celebration that unfolded. Inspired by the vision of a canopy of disco balls, the pair set out to plan a wedding filled with “over-thetop extraness.” The key to bringing that vision to life was to add rhinestones, and then add some more. “I had this rhinestone cowboy motif in my head, so I essentially set out to make everything look super extra. The first thing I did was bedazzle my boots, which really ignited my addiction for adding sparkle to everything in sight,” Ian says. — H N

IMPERFECTLY, PERFECT A bit of rain and some lipstick on Brittany’s teeth couldn’t stop the pair from cherishing a quiet moment together.

t rained on the day Brittany Snow (34 and an actress) wed Tyler Stanaland (30 and a realtor and surfer)—proof that no one is immune to lastminute wedding hiccups. But, the couple took it in stride and ended up with an “imperfectly, perfect” wedding day. Under the tent (which the pair thankfully secured at the last minute!) they sought to create a space that felt just like home. “Much of the furniture at the wedding mirrored our own home pieces,” they said. Cozy furnishings weren’t the only way this couple made their wedding their own. Leather high-top Converse and an heirloom Rolex added personality to Tyler’s ensemble. Meanwhile, Brittany sported a gown she worked with her friend, designer Jonathan Simkhai, to design. “I wanted to feel timeless, classic and effortless,” she recalls of her inspiration.

SURF’S UP A nod to Tyler’s passion for catching waves, friends left notes on an untraditional guest book: a surf board. “Shred the tunnel of love,” one read.

TACOS + MARGS An ode to the couple’s story, guests dined on tacos and a trio of tequila sips while seated at rustic tables. PUPPY LOVE Their beloved pooch, Billie Jean, served as the flower girl, sporting a floral collar inspired by the bride’s bouquet.

COVID-19 SPECIAL

Q+A

FORCE of NATURE On March 25, 2020, Bindi Irwin and long-time love Chandler Powell tied the knot—but not in the way they originally hoped. The global pandemic forced the couple to shift plans—not once, but twice. We caught up with Bindi for the full scoop on the couple’s love-filled day.

TALK TO US ABOUT WEDDING PLANNING.

Pretty much everything we planned for our wedding changed—but the process was really special. I’m definitely a planner (Chandler wrote in his vows that I’m like Leslie Knope from the show Parks and Recreation when it comes to planning)! I had so many binders and notebooks filled with ideas. Even though the day turned out very different than what we originally planned, in a way it made getting married so much sweeter.

OPPOSITE PAGE: AUSTRALIA ZOO; TIMELINE: @BINDISUEIRWIN/INSTAGRAM

The two instantly bonded over their love of nature.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF ALL THE CHANGED PLANS?

It was a little heartbreaking having no control over the situations we were faced with. I’d dreamed of my wedding since I was tiny. We had set up a beautiful ceremony outside in our zoo gardens, but the paparazzi got wind and their helicopter hovered above, terrifying our animals. We had to change our plans again! I rolled up my lace sleeves and helped move tables and arrange flowers in our old filming barn so we could finally get married. We were so determined to make things work, I didn’t let myself get too overwhelmed—plus, Chandler is very comforting, which made all the difference.

Q:

MEET-CUTE

THE PROPOSAL Chandler popped the question on Bindi’s 21st birthday.

SOME PEOPLE INCLUDE THEIR PETS IN THEIR WEDDING, BUT YOU GUYS WENT NEXT LEVEL!

Yes! Our Australia Zoo animals are like family to us. I loved that Mum walked down the aisle with Brandi the koala and Chandler held Lionel the woma python. Including our animal family was very important to us because we love them all so much.

TKM20FALL_FEA_Covid.L [P].indd 135

THE ‘I DOS’ The couple made it official in the Irwins’ old filming barn.

Q:

ARE YOU PLANNING A SEQUEL CELEBRATION FOR YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY AT A LATER DATE?

Chandler’s family sadly couldn’t be at the wedding due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, but they were incredibly supportive. His parents and grandparents both told us that we should carry on with getting married and rest easy knowing we were making the right choice. We are hoping to have a reception in Florida to celebrate when the world has settled. In the meantime, we have been sending them lots of photographs and created a wedding video just for family and friends who couldn’t join us on our wedding day.

Q:

Q:

LOOKING BACK, WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE PART OF YOUR DAY?

The best part of the day was getting to marry my best friend at our home, Australia Zoo. Even though we couldn’t have wedding guests with us, we had all of our animal family there (our giraffe, Forest, photobombed most of our wedding pictures!). As we stood together cuddling koalas and feeding our giraffes, I vividly remember letting go of all my worry. Despite every obstacle that we were faced with to get married, we were together—and really that’s all that mattered.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Chandler and I met at Australia Zoo over six years ago. I gave him and his parents a tour of the zoo, and we quickly realized how much we had in common with our love for nature. We spent the day hugging koalas and feeding lemurs, and immediately hit it off.

Q:

YOU HAD AN INCREDIBLE CAKE AND BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS—HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO PULL IT OFF?

We wanted to support the community with every aspect of our wedding. Thankfully, the local businesses we were already working with were able to supply what we needed, even though they had less than 24 hours to prepare, as the pandemic restrictions kept changing. Communication was key!

ANY TIPS FOR COUPLES WHO HAVE TO MAKE CHANGES TO THEIR ORIGINAL WEDDING VISION?

Looking back, I know that our wedding day wasn’t by-the-book “perfect,” but it was our perfect. We changed our wedding date overnight, went from 200 guests to no guests, cancelled our cocktail hour and reception, and completely changed our ceremony venue as I was about to walk down the aisle. We even had to find Chandler clothes to wear the morning of our wedding because MOST his suit didn’t arrive in time! As more and more couples postponed their nuptials due to COVID-19, to-be-weds began to look for a new way to honor their original wedding date. Enter the minimony.

SAKILE + KAMAU BOWIE, MD

It was definitely a tough situation. We had been planning for so long, but I think it happened the way it was supposed to. We overcame the odds, and I think that’s a great way to start a marriage! We are just excited to celebrate with our families during our destination wedding in Mexico. We’ll have an entire week with our immediate and extended family!”

MATTIE + CARL S T I N S O N B E AC H , C A

The weight of this decision was one we could not take lightly. Four of our best friends sacrificially helped us get married. It was insane and humbling. The best man got officiated online to (literally) get us married. Honestly, we‘re still reeling from how sacred and beautiful this day was. But, it was truly painful not to have the people we love there.”

JORDAN + TYLER MINNEAPOLIS, MN

We slept in, jammed to some music, slowly got ready, took pictures along the Mississippi River, had our friends and family on a private Facebook Live, and made it official with a couple family members and our pastor. We laughed, cried, ate wedding cake. For that moment, we all forgot about what was going on around us and just sat in the happiness.”

WILL + CHRIS K A N S A S C I T Y, M O

Even though it was in the living room, our first dance was unforgettable— Chris surprised me by recording himself singing our song, “Glitter in the Air” by Pink. Then we had champagne toasts from our relatives over FaceTime, had drinks, laughs and played games. It was an amazing experience.”

COOKING CLASS Newlyweds Ruchi Ahluwalia and Brian Sorensen found an unexpected silver lining when they had to pivot their wedding day plans because of COVID-19. “We had a very intimate ceremony with our immediate family, but the best part was having it at my dad’s home,” says Ruchi. “In Indian tradition, the wedding ends with the girl saying her final farewell to her home. This had always been a dream of my dad’s, so it made the day that much more special to have the ceremony at his house.”

Find a simple recipe anyone can follow, and then lead them through it. It’s not only fun, but it also provides a delicious meal.

MICROWEDDING

SEQUEL WEDDING

A microwedding typically includes up to 50 guests—often immediate family and super-close friends only. In the current environment, they often have a virtual element, as well as another in-person event held at a later date when group size restrictions are lifted.

A sequel wedding is a larger-scale second celebration (i.e. a wedding that’s been postponed), following an event that is more intimate in nature (read: a microwedding, minimony or an elopement).

While great food and drinks will continue to be staples at weddings around the country, guests and vendors will be more mindful of how it’s prepared and served. We can expect to see more couples choose plated dinners versus options that have guests serving themselves.

BE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT SEATING ARRANGEMENTS You’ll want to give special consideration to the lifestyles of your guests when finalizing the seating chart. For instance, you may not want to seat your friend who travels internationally for work near an elderly relative. You may also want to offer more standing room for your ceremony or create more space between seats.

ADD A VIRTUAL COMPONENT For those guests who can’t attend for one reason or another (whether it’s because of traveling restrictions or health concerns), you may want to look at including a virtual element. Live-streaming the ceremony is probably your easiest bet, but you could also include parts of the reception, like toasts and first dances. 139

WEDDING GOWNS 101 Searching for the one? Study up on everything you need to know before you hit the salon.

A GUIDE TO DRESS SILHOUETTES

Ball Gown

Perfect for the bride looking to make a statement, there’s nothing subtle about a ball gown. This classic silhouette has a fitted bodice and a voluminous full skirt.

A-line

Mermaid

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a skirt that flares out in—you guessed it—an A shape. Consider it a halfway point between a sheath and a ball gown.

Va-va-voom. This sultry silhouette has a fitted bodice, waist and hips, and dramatically flares out at the knee. It’s a great option if you want to show off your curves.

Trumpet

Sheath

This slim silhouette A toned-down version skims over the body, of the mermaid, the falling straight to skirt of this gown flares the floor below the out just below the hips, hips. What a sheath creating a semi-full dress lacks in volume, shape (like the bell it makes up for in of a trumpet) without versatility—it works with nearly every fabric. any extra volume.

Empire A dress for the Grecian goddess in us all, the empire style has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance that lengthens the body.

S H O P E A R L Y A designer wedding gown will take months to create and a series of alterations to fit your body perfectly. In other words, it’s not the kind of garment you can toss into an online shopping cart and have show up on your doorstep two days later. Book your first appointment 9 to 12 months before your wedding date. If you’re shopping closer to your wedding, you may be limited to samples or off-the-rack gowns. A L W A Y S B O O K A N A P P O I N T M E N T Scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention. If you’re the type who hates feeling rushed when shopping, make an appointment on a slow weekday morning or afternoon. L I M I T Y O U R E N T O U R A G E Bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t. Enlist one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown that best suits your style and not feel pressured by too many opinions.

H I D D E N C O S T S A D D U P Remember, your wedding gown budget doesn’t just include the dress. Your veil or headpiece, accessories, undergarments and alterations will also add to your bottom line. Factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your shopping budget. T R U S T I S K E Y Even if a gown doesn’t look amazing on the hanger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look amazing on you. Be open to what an experienced consultant thinks will work for your body (after all, they’ve done this before). Bottom line: The dress you end up loving might be different than what you originally pictured, and that’s okay. S A L O N S C A N S O M E T I M E S T A K E R E Q U E S T S Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer, doesn’t mean it’ll have the exact wedding dress you’ve been wanting to try on. But, if you phone in advance and ask about a specific style, your consultant may be able to request a loaner sample of that gown especially for you.

3 The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands. 4

Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse duty-free bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

6

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9

Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane ride from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike.

With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84 and 88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, T-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

3

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers.

8 Hike along an inland trail or down a coastal pathway, laugh at a mischievous green monkey in the wildlife preserve or unwind in one of the numerous parks. 9

4

If you want to take to the water, board a catamaran in Bridgetown for lunchtime snorkeling, or set sail for a sunset dinner cruise.

5

10 Dance the night away in “irie” oblivion to live soca, reggae or calypso at Harbour Lights or hot spot Red Door Lounge.

First made more than 370 years ago from the sugar cane that populated the island, Barbados rum soon found the favor of many English sailors.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour. 10

LAST LOOK

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about downsizing our wedding as a last-minute result of the pandemic. But, our intimate park ceremony was more memorable than I ever expected. There were no other distractions—it was just us. After exchanging vows, we went back home and Morgan made us dinner and a homemade wedding cake. We plan to make this a tradition for our future anniversaries—reading our vows and making a cake at home.
