CARLEY’S LETTER

so many choices One of the biggest decisions you’re going to make is what colors you’ll use. Sounds simple, right? In a way it is—just open up your closet. What color are most of your clothes? Or take a look at the smartphone case you picked out or the paint color in your bedroom. But here’s where it gets tricky: Maybe everything in your closet is black; well, that’s not a typical wedding color (though, trust me, it can be superchic and completely un-Goth too). Or perhaps you love green, but there are about a billion shades and maybe 10 million of them would be pretty scary on a cake. There are some rules. Keep reading!

work your colors into the details

We asked one of our friends at Pantone (the company basically standardized shades for printers and has done tons of research on hues) to lead the way in “Color Rules” (p. 216). Once you’re set on a palette, check out our “Ultimate Flower Guide” (p. 233) to see if your preferred blooms come in the shades you like.

Get a complete color lesson in “Styling With Colors” (p. 224). One of our favorite combos is pomegranate and honey. See how Lynn Easton Andrews and her crew worked them together beautifully in “Artistic Terrain” (p. 210), shot at Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards—a gorgeous winery wedding venue in Virginia.

lynn easton andrews You can count on Lynn Easton Andrews—founder of Easton Events and owner of Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards—to create exceptionally pretty weddings. While she thinks “there really isn’t one” universally pleasing color for brides, Andrews is always ready with “a trove of ribbon” for any last-minute color adjustments. See her work in “Artistic Terrain” (p. 210).

leatrice eiseman We knew Leatrice Eiseman’s was the brain to pick for our “Color Rules” story (p. 216) for several reasons: She is the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, her color concepts have been described as top in the field, and most important, she is a color fanatic, who has guided her mother’s decoration decisions ever since she was eight years old.

ira levy Premier lighting designer Ira Levy may not have become a doctor as his parents had wished, but his famously elegant work has more than made up for the initial disappointment. Because Levy and his team “get it right every time,” we figured he’d be the right person to dish on “How to Ace Your Wedding Lighting” (p. 208).

jacqueline nwobu Here’s a woman with a vision. Seeing “the need to create a wedding publication for women of color,” Jacqueline Nwobu ignored the fact that she knew nothing about publishing, left her career as a scientist and launched Munaluchi Bride in 2010. The Knot was excited to team up with Nwobu for “Munaluchi’s Fashion Favorites” (p. 92).

andrews: jen fariello; eiseman: Pantone; Jarvis: Jean Cabacungan-Jarvis; nwobu: Munaluchi

To Devon Jarvis, developing prints for the first time was like witnessing magic. By the end of high school, he realized that his interest in photography could actually become a career. Jarvis, who describes his style as direct and simple, enjoys taking objects out of their context. You’ll see what that means in “Flatter Your Maids” (p. 288).

Our cofounder answers your questions.

K

ring shopping when his mother graciously offered her wedding ring. Although I appreciate the gesture, I had my heart set on something a bit different. Is there any way I can turn down her offer without ruining our relationship or worse? —Arboralma A What an amazing offer! But I can see your problem. Talk to your boyfriend first: Make it clear that you’re extremely flattered and overwhelmed by such a generous gesture but that you’re not in love with the actual ring. There are a couple options: You keep it, wear it and eventually add a diamond right-hand ring that you two pick out together (maybe as an anniversary gift). Or you could have the stone reset. If you think this may work, just be sure you’re clear about your reasons: You don’t want to say you simply find her ring ugly or demand a ring that’s yours alone. You need to think practically. Will it work with your personal style? Does it flatter your hand? Whatever your reason, you need to make one thing clear—that you’re tremendously honored by her offer. But if your fiancé says you’ll be on thin ice with this one, try to find a way to learn to live with it (there are worse gifts than a diamond ring, after all).

black-and-white memories

Q A

Color wedding photos or black-and-white ones—which is considered the best these days? —beabullmom

There’s something dramatic about black-and-white photographs: They tend to project more emotion and focus on the essence of the people in them. But color will capture all the details you so painstakingly planned. Your best bet is most likely a combination of both. Unless your photographer is planning on shooting on actual film, the photos can be converted to black-and-white after the fact.

invite your now-single parents with or without a guest (we suggest inviting them with). The one exception: If the new girlfriend was in any way involved in the divorce (in other words, if there was an “other woman” or “other man” situation), strongly consider asking your father to respect your mother’s feelings and not bring someone who is likely to reopen unhealed wounds. If that’s not the case, and you do choose to invite your parents with guests, make sure it’s clear on your invitations that each parent is welcome to bring someone (whether a new love interest or a friend). What happens after that is out of your control. Your parents are adults and will (hopefully) act as such on the day of your wedding. >>

f  orever pink Wedding planner Ivy Robinson of Ivy Robinson Weddings & Events in North Carolina gives us five reasons why pink will never go out of style. 1 Considered “the color of love,” pink has always been and will always be one of the most popular wedding colors. 2 It has lots of personalities— from timeless and romantic to bold, flirty and fun. 3 Its monochromatic scheme can go from soft blush to hot pink. 4 Given the range of tones and styles, pink works in any wedding element, such as bouquets, stationery and specialty drinks. 5 Pink is perfect for bridesmaid dresses. There's a shade that will flatter everyone. (Need proof? Check out the “Best Bridesmaid Dresses” on p. 80). >>

Sparkling rosé is giving champagne a run for its money as the hottest celebratory drink right now. Celebrity wedding planner Brian Worley says sparkling rosé is great for weddings—it’s just as bubbly as champagne, and because the drink is pink, it’s even more festive. Of all the options out there, we particularly love the subtle yet lingering hints of red-berry fruit in Santa Margherita sparkling rosé ($24, TerlatoWines.com), the full-bodied notes of peach in the elegant and complex Domaine Carneros brut rosé ($36, DomaineCarneros.com) and the slight hint of pepper in the lively and intense Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial ($50, Sherry-Lehmann.com).

FINALLY SOMETHING YOU CAN BOTH AGREE ON. It’s hard to agree on everything when planning a wedding except, of course, when it comes to registering for Riedel wine glasses. Go to RIEDEL.COM for a collection that keeps you and yours in perfect harmony.

decor buzz

b  ring in the greens You don’t need an outdoor wedding to incorporate nature in a big way. Los Angeles– and New York City–based celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss says succulents and leafy plants are right on trend (emerald green is the Pantone Color of the Year after all). Not only does greenery generally cost less than flowers, but it also can be just as fabulous in rustic, vintage or eco-friendly weddings as it is in classic, elegant ones. Weiss once covered a 16-foot bar with wheatgrass and put a beer “garden” on top. While succulents can make your décor look unexpected and impressive, there are certain varieties that can dry out or wilt in the sun easily. So before you decide on anything, remember to consult a florist to figure out which type of natural greens works best at your venue, says Weiss.

new vintage

Want a bit of history but don’t want to look outdated? There’s a place to get your “something old” and “something new” in each piece of jewelry. Rue de la Marguerite (RueDeLaMarguerite.com) has an amazing collection of upcycled items—antique components and family heirlooms, such as vintage brooches, partially exposed vintage watch gears and stripped down typewriter parts—treated to make them modern and wearable. So how is that done? Think: chain, wire-wrapped semiprecious stones and African trade beads.

Step 1 Apply double-sided tape over any curvy portions (like the neck) of the bottle you’d like to cover. Step 2 Starting from either the lip or the base, attach the end of your yarn to the bottle with a small piece of doublesided tape, slightly below (the lip) or above (the base) where you want the yarn coil to begin. Step 3 Wrap the yarn around the bottle (over the taped end), progressing in tight, even coils. Step 4 When you are about half an inch from where you want the yarn to stop, apply a small piece of the tape to the stopping point. Wrap to there, trim the yarn and smooth the loose end down onto the tape.

trend alert

(OPTIONAL) If you would like to include a bow, begin wrapping from the base of the bottle. Apply double-sided tape to the spot where you want the bow and press the yarn down to secure it. Trim, leaving about 10 inches of yarn hanging. With a new piece of yarn, begin wrapping from the lip of the bottle. Stop when you reach the first loose end. Apply a bit of the tape beside it. Press the second strand of yarn down on the tape and trim to leave about 10 inches of yarn hanging. Tie the two loose ends together in a bow and trim with scissors.

ivory

lela rose

Who looks good in it Another reason to love ivory is that the hue flatters everyone. According to Terry Hall, fashion director at Kleinfeld Bridal, “Ivory is a bit easier to wear for most skin tones and offers a richness and warmth that white cannot.”

white Why you’ll love it A true-white dress conveys a sense of innocence and freshness. Ingram says, “It has an almost youthful quality and feel to it. I see white gowns as very specific for a winter-wonderland wedding or a summer wedding held at a resort or beach destination.”

hayley paige

Who looks good in it Hall recommends white for brides with natural golden or darker skin tones. If you’re fair or have yellow undertones in your skin, the bright color of true white can wash you out.

Why you’ll love it Ivory can come off as more formal than white since it’s a richer, creamier shade. Mark Ingram, founder of Mark Ingram Atelier, says he sees gowns in “ivory shades as having a more luxurious and more sumptuous feel.”

feminine drama

An unconventional bride, Belinda knew she wanted an edgy wedding gown but was looking for one that would still allow her to “feel like me.” True to her ways, she let her fiancé choose the silhouette of the gown—his request was a slim-fitting dress—and fell in love at first sight with, not a white, but a blush Vera Wang dress. She was concerned that the exposed boning would be a bit too out-there even for her, so she softened the look by adding a simple rhinestone belt. >>

Jess admits that she was skeptical when she started dress shopping. She wasn’t sure she would find anything that fit her style and didn’t want a gown that looked too bridal. But then she laid eyes on a Jenny Packham gown with gold accents and knew it was the one. The vintage style with ornate beading, sequins, gems and appliqués made her feel like a starlet in an old Hollywood film. She kept her accessories simple, since the dress was covered head to toe in embellishments. >>

Amber found her bridal inspiration from Kate Moss’s whimsical English-countryside wedding. She loved the romantic style of the wedding and, to echo that element, wore a delicate formfitting gown with long lace sleeves that was custom-made. She topped her ethereal look with a colorful floral crown that matched her overgrown bouquet for a feminine yet slightly wild-child feel. She kept her hair natural with loose waves and added subtle cat-eye makeup for some playful drama.

Which one of these curling irons has what it takes for your hair? By Jennie Ma (@Ma _ Jennie)

6 have a signature drink

Cash bars may sound tempting, but the better and more tasteful option is to go with an open bar. What you can do is limit the alcohol choices to wine, beer and one or two signature cocktails.

7 skip the champagne toast You can probably save yourself about 30 bottles of champagne just by doing away with this tradition. Considering that some guests will never even drink it anyway, you could forgo passing glasses of bubbly to guests and just have them raise a glass of whatever they’re already drinking.

8 use fresh flowers

Everyone has some kind of budget, so whether you’re spending $20,000 or $200,000, here are ideas on how to save without sacrificing the overall look and feel of the day.

1 rethink your date

Going off-season can help you save, but you might still want a summer wedding, so moving the date to March or December won’t work. But consider another day of the week. Friday nights are becoming more mainstream (14 percent of weddings in 2012 happened on a Friday). You can save as much as 20 percent by choosing a Friday over a Saturday.

2 state your budget

If you want a wedding pro to work with your budget, you have to tell her what it is. Many times brides fear that if they say they have a $5,000 budget for flowers, suddenly a florist will just charge them that amount, but that’s not the case. Defining what you can spend will help you to not waste your time or your vendors’. They can put together a more suitable package knowing what the boundaries are.

3 stick to one venue

Holding your ceremony and reception in one spot is a great way to save because it cuts travel time for vendors you pay by the hour. Plus, you won’t have to figure out transportation from the ceremony to the reception for your guests.

4 stay in season

Choosing flowers that are in season will keep centerpiece and bouquet costs down (peonies cost about 40 percent more when imported out of season). See what’s in season every month in our Ultimate Wedding Flower Guide (TheKnot.com/flowers).

5 go big

Designing your space around tables of 8 to 12 rather than 6 means fewer centerpieces, which can cost $300 and up, depending on how lavish you go.

9 weigh printing options

There’s no question engraving is the Lamborghini of lettering techniques. It’s created using an etched plate and gives a slightly raised ink. The look comes with a hefty price tag. Another option is thermography, which mimics the look of engraving but is less expensive. The only dead giveaway is that it doesn’t have the refined indentations on the back of the invite that engraving does.

10 look for double duty

Escort cards that work as favors are a great two-for-one idea. Think: gorgeous cookies with table numbers printed on them, wrapped and tagged with each guest’s name, or a display of pretty boxes filled with sweet treats and labeled with guests’ names and table numbers.

10 smart ways to save

You’d be amazed how long it takes to make a single sugar flower for a wedding cake. According to cake maven Sylvia Weinstock, it takes a solid week to create 100 big sugar flowers. The result is amazingly over-the-top beautiful, but if you want to save, skip the extra add-ons or use fresh flowers.

bold preppy St. Paul natives, Allie Rust (27 and a copywriter) and Jesse Rangel (28 and an IT and marketing recruiter) had their hearts set on a quintessentially “St. Paul” day. A dramatic color palette of Allie’s favorite colors—white, gray and red—spiced things up, while thick-striped accents reflected their preppy style. —MO

Red and black ink and gray details hinted at the day’s color palette. the flower girl Allie’s three-year-old goddaughter, Samantha, took her duties very seriously. She (carefully) carried a glittery purse filled with red and white blooms down the aisle. the boutonnieres Classic red-rose boutonnieres, accented with dusty miller, gave the guys a pop of color; stems wrapped in striped ribbon added a whimsical touch. The fellas looked dapper in traditional black tuxes with ivory shirts and black bow ties, suspenders and cummerbunds. the bridesmaid style Allie’s six bridesmaids all wore not just the same charcoal-gray knee-length dress, but also the same flirty bright red heels.

Alex We’ll go across Europe, then through Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, up to China and down to eastern Asia, then to Singapore. It should be interesting in a 25-year-old camper van, getting married all along the way.

Q Has Peggy ever failed? Alex We broke down a lot between Colombia and Peru. We got a faulty fuel pump, and the van would stop running at random. The scariest point was when we were driving on a road that had official signs warning of bandits. It’s a really cheap way to travel; our only real cost is fuel because we camp where we can and we cook in the van. We’re self-funded on this adventure; we didn’t win the lottery or anything.

Q What did your friends and family say about this grand plan? Lisa That we’d lost our minds. We had the idea only three weeks before we set off. Q How much planning goes into each unofficial wedding? Alex It’s grown and developed. When we first set out, it was a new concept. Moving forward, I’ve got about 55 countries I’m in email contact with. In effect, I’m planning 55 weddings. We’re trying to dig up fun, forgotten cultural things. In Russia, the man has to complete a set of challenges to marry his bride. So we’re setting up all these physical and mental challenges—including [drinking] vodka—for the wedding day that I have to complete before marrying Lisa. Lisa He works forward, and I work backward. Once we’ve had the wedding, I stay in contact with everybody and handle the social media and blog. It’s such a joyful time, and everyone is so happy in the wedding industry. It’s a real bond. >>

271

Q You were newly engaged. So you just quit your jobs and set out on the road? Alex I had a small car-body-repair shop, and I sold that company. Lisa left her job; she’s in retail management. We flew to Canada, because it was one of the cheapest flights, and we had no idea what we were doing. We had just backpacks and ended up buying our camper van. We got to Vancouver and went south and drove all the way to Brazil. We’ve driven the entire length of the Americas over about 15 months and had 34 ceremonies—a wedding in almost every country. We had a wedding in Colorado and New York, and we did a voodoo wedding in Louisiana. Then, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, we did five weddings in five days, which was wild. Lisa Gant We did a James Bond wedding in Myrtle Beach, and I ended up doing most of the Bond things. All of a sudden, I was expected to jump off a high-speed boat into freezing water. I was so high on adrenaline. Alex Now we’re on the second leg. We shipped the van to England—she’s called Peggy, named after Lisa’s 93-year-old grandma. We plan to drive to Singapore, then ship the van to Australia, where we’ll end the trip and decide where our favorite place is and go back and finally get legally married for real.

Q You’re driving to Singapore?

K

6

Q The obvious question: Why get married in so many places? Alex Pelling We decided we were going to emigrate to Australia from England, and before we settled there we’d do some traveling. We decided to write a blog (2people1life.com) about unique places to get married around the world. In England it’s quite restrictive; you have to get married inside a registered building. Then we came up with the idea: How could we really write about this without experiencing these ceremonies firsthand? There was no great master plan.

k

real stories

Q Who’s footing the bill for your journey? Alex The only thing we pay for is the traveling. For the weddings, we have to rely on vendors and photographers to offer services in exchange for the publicity. We get a great experience, and we hope they have a

great time too. It’s been a win-win experience. We’re not the normal bride and groom. one dress that I was given at the first wedding that lives rolled up in a bag under the bed. We call it the Marine of wedding dresses—it’s been underwater, on the beach, everything. Alex We had people asking if they could gift us money, but that’s not what this is about. We’re raising money for UNICEF, because it’s an international charity and its core mission is trying to give children a start in life. Anyone who donates through our registry is given the chance to be flown out to our final wedding, all expenses paid. That’s our

personal commitment.

Q What have been some of the most memorable weddings so far? Alex We were affected most by the Peruvian Andean ceremony. You enter a garden from different sides, and you come to a central point where there’s a shaman chanting and a band playing string instruments. You hold the ceremony just as the sun is setting in front of your eyes, so you can’t see anything. It’s an absolute wash of emotion. One of our favorite venues was Colorado—outdoors, surrounded by nature, you just felt completely humbled. Also, Scotland. My father’s side is from Scotland, and we had the ceremony very close to the town where they’re from. Lisa I’m so excited about India, because I have a vague idea about how they celebrate marriage. All the countries have completely surpassed anything that we could have imagined. Q What’s been the hardest part? Alex Physically driving around the world in a camper van—it’s 16 feet by 6 feet—finding

Lisa We’re in the van and off the beaten path. We expected people to speak a bit of English, and we got to Mexico and not a word of English and we didn’t have a word of Spanish. You just have to muddle through, and it’s exhausting to ask for directions. We’re very good at sign language.

Q Do you ever get tired of being a bride and groom over and over? Lisa It’s different every time. In Chile, I got my hair cut and came out looking like a choirboy, and I cried. A lot of times we’re getting ready in the van, and we’ve just got a tiny mirror. There are times when I’m lucky and have a full team, attaching eyelashes and doing my hair. Alex We never once for a moment thought, I’ve had enough. We’re not having a white wedding in each country. We’re discovering and experiencing and learning new things all the time, so it doesn’t get boring.

“Be prepared to go with the flow.” Q What kind of following have you attracted? Lisa In Brazil, we were filmed by a TV show called Fantástico that’s watched by 50 million to 60 million people on Sundays. While driving in Brazil—a lot of filming was in the van—someone was always beeping, waving their arms and shouting, “Fantástico!” Every fourth car was beeping at us. It was out-of-this-world weird.

Alex It’s been an unexpected reward, meeting friends from all over the world. We’ll end this trip financially with nothing, but we’ll have a friend in every country.

Q Has traveling the world together changed your relationship? Alex I’m getting more emotional with each wedding—it’s like another benchmark. It’s making us very strong. We’re quite personable, so we can adapt to different environments and cultures quickly. After we left America and got back to England, everyone was saying we had an American accent. We seem to be able to zone into the local cultures. We’re both very adventurous. It won’t be until the end that we look back and say, “We’ve just been around the world.” Q Any advice for a couple planning to get married abroad? Lisa Be prepared to go with the flow. Don’t expect anything to happen on time. If you don’t have any expectations, you’re always pleasantly surprised. Q When does it all end? Alex Fall 2014. We’ll have the final wedding to plan and choose our favorite place. We don’t want to jump the gun and officially get married until we finish the adventure. We just want the last ceremony to be a really high-energy, happy, intense experience for us.

Q And then what? Alex We’ll sit down in a dark room and relax. Then we’ll set up a new life together: That’s when the real adventure starts.

somewhere to park that’s safe enough and dealing with breakdowns are all challenging. We’ve got to hijack Wi-Fi all the time.

flatter your maids And we don’t mean just with kind words. Make your bridesmaids feel good by finding dresses they’ll look great in. By Jennie ma Photography by Devon Jarvis

gown silhouette styles trumpet gown

mermaid gown

The skirt in this gown style extends from the bustline. It’s a great choice for pear-shaped brides because it disguises the hips.

The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.

This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.

a-line gown

ball gown

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.

The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.

This slim, form-fitting silhouette hugs the body from head-to-toe. It’s the perfect look for casual, intimate weddings.

wedding party 101 The least you need to know to coordinate your wedding party’s look.

bridesmaids • For a modern, but still put-together look—pick the color and fabric, but consider letting your bridesmaids choose the neckline and silhouette. • When shopping, bring one or two bridesmaids—maybe the maid who has the body or coloring that’s most similar to the rest of the bridal party, or the maid who is the most difficult to fit. • Ask for your maids’ advice, but make the final decision yourself. You’re the one who knows the big picture—overall look, formality and people’s budgets—best. • The bridesmaids should try to place their orders at the same time to ensure that the dresses will be made from the same dye lot. • Allow three months’ delivery and alteration time for the dresses. • Don’t forget the extras. Should the maids all have the same shoes, jewelry, hairstyles, handbags or wraps? Communicate your desires clearly to your maids. Email works great for this.

sweetheart neckline

scoop neckline

one-shoulder neckline

groom & groomsmen • Brush up on your tuxedo terms and take a peek in your own closet before you begin suit shopping. This will give you an idea of what style you like best—notched or shawl lapel, standard or spread collar.

438

• The groomsmen should dress around the groom. A consistent look is great, but the groom should sport some detail (a boutonniere, tie or pocket square) that differentiates him from the pack. shawl lapel

notched lapel

• The tuxedo is classic, but consider all your options. Marrying by the beach? Try a more casual jacket and trousers. Having an ultra-formal wedding? Pick a cutaway coat, gray-striped trousers, gray vest and ascot. peaked lapel

flower girls & ring bearers • Flower girls and ring bearers don’t have to match the adults perfectly, but they should certainly fit in with the formality of the event. The only exception: Tuxedos aren’t necessary (and may not be available) for tykes under six. Our trick—substitute a black suit and a bow tie. • Be sure to dress your flower girl or ring bearer appropriately for their age. Strapless or halter dresses may be too sophisticated for the little ones (even with a cardigan), while overly froufrou tulle dresses might not look right on, say, a 10-year-old.

• Should you rent or buy? If you don’t attend many formal events or if your weight is frequently in flux, renting may be the way to go. If you’ll have three or four more good uses for a tux, the suit will pay for itself.
