This artwork was painted back in 1563 by the Dutch and Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder. This painting is oil on wood and contains the Flemish Mannerism style. This artwork depicts a biblical scene of the tower of Babel that was located in Ancient Mesopotamia ( current day Iraq, Babel). As it symbolizes the multiplicity of language. The painting holds the power of languages and their interconnections together. Moreover, they showcase how different cultures can unite in one place, where they can get to create a beautiful artwork such as seen above.

En cette période de pandémie, il est difficile pour tout le monde de rester motivé, mais une chose que la quarantaine m'a enseignée est comment rester positif et heureux. J'ai découvert que le bonheur dépend grandement de notre corps, essayez de boire de bonnes quantités d'eau, faites de l'exercice ou tout simplement faire une promenade lorsque cela est possible tout en maintenant la distance sociale. Ces temps-ci ont été si stressants pour tout le monde, mais il est très important de prendre soin de soi. On dit toujours que l'on est ce que l'on mange, et c'est vrai à bien des égards.

Essayez de manger plus sainement, cela affectera votre horaires de sommeil et vous vous sentirez différent. Il est difficile de rester positif, mais il faut avancer dans la vie, parce que c'est ce qui nous rend humains. Les difficultés nous façonnent, mais c'est nous qui contrôlons si c'est une bonne ou une mauvaise chose. Tout est question de perspectives et de mentalités. Gardez le sourire.

Le Masque de l'Hypocrisie

Alors, il lui passa ce message : “Maître le Lion, que vous êtes beau sur votre siège Pouvez-vous me diriger vers le bon passage Pour trouver un puits, si cela ne vous déplaise ?”

Les rideaux s’ouvrent, la scène ne comporte aucun décor, seuls des hommes et des femmes portant des masques tous identiques.

L’on se donne à Amman, un rendez-vous, mais fort exact tous les soirs pour parler de choses et d’autres, pour se regarder au visage, se désapprouver les uns les autres et se mentir. On se donne des rendez-vous non pour s’écouter mais pour s’observer ; et selon les apparences, ou l’on respecte les personnes ou on les dédaigne.

Alors ils sont là, ils se réunissent, ils se parlent, de choses et d’autres, ils meuvent dans un espace sans espace, dans un temps sans temps, et moi véritablement distancié, je les regarde ces gens et je m’étonne de ce qu'ils font ou de ce qu’ils semblent faire.

Mais après avoir témoigné ce spectacle monotone, jour après jour, le mur se brise et je deviens un acteur parmi les autres, je me baigne dans ce monde artificiel, ne s’en distinguant plus. Je ne sais plus parler, parce que je ne sais plus penser, je ne sais plus penser parce que je ne sais plus sentir, je ne sais plus être ma propre personne, je suis désormais le reflet des autres. Le cire de ce masque m'a pénétrée. Je deviens n’importe qui, n’importe quoi, n’importe quand car n’étant rien, je ne suis que les autres. On peut échanger les masques, on peut promettre, on peut trahir et vice versa, et on ne s’apercevra même pas.

Notre persona est désormais un fragment permanent de notre personnalité, un masque omniprésent qui étouffe nos vraies natures, qui fait de nous des êtres interchangeables, des hypocrites.

Les rideaux ne se ferment jamais.

Cela fut fort aisé, Il suivit le bon passage Et de sa sueur trempa son pelage.

Il fut malheureusement attrapé À trop écouter le Lion, il fut mangé.

Living in a pandemic, it has been so hard for everyone to stay motivated, but one thing quarantine has been teaching me is how to stay positive and happy. I found that happiness depends greatly on how happy our body is, try drinking good amounts of water, exercise or just go for a walk when it's possible while staying socially distant. These times have been so stressful for everyone but it’s very important to take care of ourselves. We always hear that you are what you eat, and that is true on so many levels. Try eating healthier, it will affect your sleep schedule and will make you feel different. It’s hard to always stay positive but we should always keep pushing in life because that’s what makes us humans, hardships will shape us, but we are the ones who control whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing. It’s all about perspectives and mindsets.

Stay smiling.

The curtains open, the stage has no set, only men and women wearing identical masks.

We make an appointment in Amman every night, to talk about something, to look at each other in the face, to disapprove of each other and to lie to each other. We make appointments not to listen to each other but to observe each other; and we respect or despise people based on appearances.

So there they are, they meet, they talk to each other, of things and others, they move in a space without space, in a time without time, and me truly distanced, I look at these people and I am astonished at what they are doing or what they seem to be doing.

But after witnessing this monotonous spectacle, day after day, the wall breaks and I become one of the actors, I bathe in this artificial world, no longer standing out from it. Hoy en día, se están fabricando muchas tecnologías nuevas. Por ejemplo, hay muchas investigaciones nuevas sobre clonación y realidad virtual. Otra nueva tecnología es la edición de genes. CRISPR es una forma de edición de genes, y es la mejor herramienta de edición de genes que se ha creado hasta ahora.

La edición de genes puede curar muchas enfermedades, como algunos casos de Alzheimer, cáncer, y VIH. Estas enfermedades no tienen cura, y muchas personas mueren de esto. La tecnología CRISPR ya se ha usado para cambiar las células de algunas personas con cáncer, y ha ayudado mucho. CRISPR puede tomar las partes del ADN que están mal, y reemplazar las partes con el ADN correcto.

Adicionalmente, en familias con enfermedades hereditarias, la tecnología CRISPR puede detener la transmisión. Por ejemplo, la enfermedad de Huntington y la fibrosis quística se pueden curar con la tecnología CRISPR. Ambas enfermedades son muy serias y pueden ser fatales, y no tienen una cura. Por eso, es muy importante usar la tecnología que nosotros tenemos. No obstante, muchas personas cuestionan la ética de CRISPR y si los humanos deberían tener la capacidad de cambiar el ADN. La edición de genes puede salvar especies en peligro de extinción también. Muchos científicos predicen que nos enfrentaremos a la sexta gran extinción masiva pronto debido al calentamiento global. Los científicos quieren usar CRISPR para ayudar a las especies en peligro de extinción.

CRISPR puede ayudar porque los científicos pueden modificar animales en peligro de extinción para ser más fuertes. Por otro lado, esto es muy controvertido porque muchas cosas pueden salir mal. Por instancia, muchas personas piensan que si nosotros cambiamos el ADN de los animales, ellos podrían ser más fuertes que los humanos.

Adicionalmente, mucha gente piensa que no deberíamos usar la edición de genes porque no deberíamos cambiar animales e interferir con las creaciones de Dios.

En conclusión, pienso que la edición de genes se debe usar porque hay muchos beneficios. La edición de genes podría cambiar nuestras vidas por la mejor a través de sus diferentes formas de mejorar la vida. Con suerte, las dudas sobre la edición de genes se borrarán y la edición de genes se podrá utilizar con más frecuencia en el futuro.

Cuando pienso sobre la pandemia actual, pienso en mí misma en el grado diez cuando estuve aprendido sobre la peste negra. Me sorprende ,la manera en que las personas se habían quedado en sus casas durante largo tiempo. Un año y medio después, y tengo la respuesta. El virus de la corona ha traído a luz el innecesario pero controvertido debate sobre las vacunas. Algunas personas están a favor de ellas, mientras que otras no lo son. Sin embargo, es importante que las personas sepan que las vacunas son la solución para poner fin a la pandemia masiva que hay en nuestras vidas. A pesar de eso, muchos de los “antivacunas” no creen en la eficacia de las vacunas y pueden retrasar nuestras vidas normal de ocurrir.

La manera en que funcionan las vacunas es que aumentan la inmunidad de grupo, y gradualmente menos personas serán infectadas. Las vacunas ayudan y previenen la necesidad de otros medicamentos para combatir los virus que se han estado propagando durante los últimos 200 años. No solo eso, pero en el artículo de Sanitas, se reporta que “Ningún otro medicamento ha salvado tantas vidas como las vacunas”. La importancia de las vacunas es grande, y nosotros, como población de la misma tierra tenemos que realizar la influencia duradera de las vacunas.

Por ejemplo, “Enfermedades que antes eran epidémicas y que originaban una gran mortalidad ahora están erradicadas en todo el mundo (viruela), casi erradicadas (poliomielitis...) o controladas (hepatitis B...)”. Imagina nuestro mundo ahora si estos virus mortales todavía estuvieran a largo. Tal vez, pudieron haber sido si las vacunas no se desarrollan o si la mayoría de la población rechaza tomarlas.

Muchas personas piensan que nuestra generación es perezosa, inculta y “lo tiene fácil”.

También, piensan que las redes sociales son la causa de todos nuestros problemas. Aunque hay algunas desventajas en las redes sociales como la falta de privacidad y el hecho de que es más fácil chantajear a otros porque todo está en el internet, creo que los beneficios sobrepasan las desventajas. Las redes sociales han avanzado el mundo en todos los sectores y han hecho nuestra generación ser capaz de comunicar y comprender otras culturas y creencias. Hay muchas cosas con las que las redes sociales nos ayudan como mantenernos conectados e informados y las compras en línea que ayuda la economía del mundo que se promueven y anuncian en las redes sociales. Además, hay más gente que está votando porque son más educados y hay maneras más fáciles para anunciar cosas que todo el mundo puede ver usando la red. Un ejemplo de eso puede ser las publicaciones de celebridades sobre el apoyo a un partido político específico.

Las redes sociales juegan un papel muy importante en todas nuestras vidas. En primer lugar, es un espacio creativo donde las personas pueden compartir sus pensamientos sobre diferentes ideas, que hacen que toda esta generación sea más abierta a diferentes puntos de vista. Nuestra sociedad es afectada tanto negativa como positivamente por los medios sociales, pero uno pesa más que el otro. Aunque una de las mayores desventajas que vienen con las redes sociales es el ciberacoso, hay muchas nuevas leyes que surgen para luchar contra el ciberacoso y sus efectos. Para citar al sr. Troy Dooly, “Missouri y California han aprobado las leyes más fuertes que protegen a las víctimas de ciberbullying mientras dictan castigos más severos al ciberacosador.” (Dooly). Estas leyes también están apareciendo en muchos países de todo el mundo, lo que ayuda a eliminar un gran problema que viene con las redes sociales. El internet se ha convertido en parte de nuestra vida diaria, por eso, muchas desventajas se están resolviendo diariamente y la gente espera que los problemas de las redes sociales desaparezcan algún día. Esta presencia de las redes sociales en todo el mundo muestra que muchas desventajas se están resolviendo actualmente, lo que nos deja con muchos beneficios y pocas desventajas. Cada ley y cada puesto nos acerca un paso más a este concepto.

Las compras en línea se han vuelto muy populares ya que la gente prefiere quedarse en casa en lugar de ir a una tienda para comprar ropa o cualquier otra cosa. Estos sitios han ayudado a crecer la economía ya que las tiendas están ganando más ganancias, lo que también crea más flujo de dinero en la economía. Las redes sociales ayudan a anunciar estos sitios web en línea a su vez, los sitios web en línea anuncian estas aplicaciones de redes sociales. Todo este proceso ayuda a engañar a los usuarios en línea a entrar en sitios web y comprar cosas que no estaban buscando en primer lugar. Mientras que algunos no creen que estas publicaciones en línea sean útiles, creo que las redes sociales saben cómo dirigirse a un público, por lo que el anuncio que viene en su pantalla se hace para que usted esté interesado en comprar esta cosa o ver este video. La política está cambiando con más influencia de las redes sociales. Aunque no parece obvio que las redes sociales puedan ayudar a los políticos a ganar elecciones, hay muchas maneras de que puedan ser útiles. Sin internet, los políticos usualmente hicieron discursos y campañas usando volantes de papel, pero usando las redes sociales les ayudó a ganar más votantes. Me sorprende que algunas personas no piensen que las redes sociales influyen en la política. Está claro que con algunas publicaciones opinadas se puede ganar un montón de seguidores que después se convierten en votantes. Una gran desventaja de usar las redes sociales en la política es el riesgo de ser chantajeado por cosas que habías compartido en internet en el pasado. Este es un tema muy popular, ya que los candidatos intentan arruinar la reputación del otro para su propio beneficio. A pesar de que este es un posible resultado del uso de las redes sociales en la política, creo que muchos políticos ya vienen preparados en caso de chantaje, por eso, todavía se involucran con las redes sociales. Es evidente que ganar muchos votantes es un beneficio mayor que un riesgo potencial de que una reputación se arruine. Las redes sociales pueden influir en la gente, pero son los políticos los que deben mostrar la imagen correcta de ellos para obtener más votos.

En todos los casos mencionados, siempre hubo más beneficios que desventajas. Hay muchas perspectivas negativas en las redes sociales, pero estos casos muestran que las redes sociales son muy útiles. Creo que debemos aspirar a trabajar para que estas desventajas ya no existan. Si hacemos esto, podemos crear algo de que todo el mundo pueda beneficiarse.

Después de todo, siempre queremos crear algo beneficioso y no perjudicial (harmful). Si usamos las redes sociales correctamente muchas cosas mejorarían y por eso necesitamos hacer más esfuerzos para utilizar las redes sociales a su potencial.

Spanish Articles Gene editing and its benefits by: Jana AlHajjiri

Today, many new technologies are being manufactured. For example, there is a lot of new research on cloning and virtual reality. Another new technology is gene editing. CRISPR is a form of gene editing and is the best gene editing tool to be made yet.

Gene editing can cure many diseases, such as some cases of Alzheimer's, cancer, and HIV. These diseases have no cure, and many people die from them.

CRISPR technology has already been used to change the cells of some people with cancer, and it has helped a lot. CRISPR can take the parts of the DNA that are incorrect and replace the parts with the correct DNA. Additionally, in families with inherited diseases, CRISPR technology can be used to stop the transmission of these diseases. For example, Huntington's disease and cystic fibrosis can be cured with CRISPR technology. Both these diseases are very serious and can be fatal, and there is no cure.

Therefore, it is very important to use the technology that we have. However, many people question the ethics of CRISPR and whether humans should have the ability to change DNA. Gene editing can save endangered species as well.

Many scientists predict that we will face the sixth great mass extinction soon due to global warming. Scientists want to use CRISPR to help endangered species.

CRISPR can help because scientists can modify endangered animals to be stronger. On the other hand, this is very controversial because many things can go wrong. For instance, many people think that if we change the DNA of animals, they could be stronger than humans. Additionally, many people think that we should not use gene editing because we should not change animals and interfere with God's creations.

In conclusion, I think gene editing should be used because there are many benefits. Gene editing could change our lives for the better through its different ways of improving life. Hopefully, doubts of gene editing will be erased, and gene editing can be used more frequently in the future.

The Importance of Vaccines by: Iman Yaish

When I think about the current pandemic, I think of myself in grade ten when I learnt about the black plague. I was surprised, thinking how could people stay in their homes for that long a time. A year and a half later, and I have the answer. Coronavirus has brought to light the unnecessary but controversial debate on vaccines. Some people are in favor of them, while others are not. However, it is important for people to know that vaccines are the solution to ending the massive pandemic in our lives. Despite this, many “anti-vaxxers” do not believe in the efficacy of vaccines and their thoughts can further delay normalcy in our lives.

The way vaccines work is that they increase group immunity, and gradually fewer people will be infected. Vaccines help and prevent the need for other medicines to fight viruses that have been spreading over the past 200 years. Not only that, but Sanitas’ article reports that “no other medicine has saved as many lives as vaccines.” The importance of vaccines is great, and we, as a population of the same land, have to make the lasting influence of vaccines. For example, “Diseases that were once epidemic and which caused a high mortality rate are now eradicated worldwide (smallpox), almost eradicated (poliomyelitis...), or controlled (hepatitis B...).” Imagine our world now if these deadly viruses were still at large. Perhaps this imagination could have been reality if vaccines had never developed or if the majority of the population refused to have taken them.

Many people think that our generation is lazy, uneducated and "has it easy." They also think that social media is the cause of all our problems. Although there are some disadvantages to social media such as the lack of privacy and the fact that it is easier to blackmail others because everything is on the internet, I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Social media has advanced the world in all sectors and has made our generation able to communicate and understand other cultures and beliefs. There are many things that social media help us with like staying connected and informed and online shopping which helps the world's economy is being promoted and advertised on social media. In addition, there are more people who are voting because they are more educated and there are easier ways to advertise things that everyone can see using the network. An example of this may be celebrity posts about supporting a specific political party.

Social media plays a very important role in all our lives. First of all, it is a creative space where people can share their thoughts on different ideas, which make this whole generation more open to different points of view. Our society is affected both negatively and positively by social media, but one weighs heavier than the other. While one of the biggest disadvantages that come with social media is cyberbullying, there are many new laws that arise to combat cyberbullying and its effects. To quote Mr. Troy Dooly, "Missouri and California have passed the strongest laws that protect victims from cyberbullying while issuing harsher punishments to the cyber-stalker." (Dooly). These laws are also appearing in many countries around the world, helping to eliminate a major problem that comes with social media. The Internet has become part of our daily lives, so many disadvantages are being solved daily and people expect social media problems to disappear one day. This presence of social networks around the world shows that many disadvantages are being resolved today, leaving us with many benefits and few disadvantages. Every law and every post brings us one step closer to this concept.

Online shopping has become very popular as people prefer to stay at home rather than go to a store to buy clothes or anything else. These sites have helped the economy grow as stores are making more profits, which also creates more money flow in the economy. Social media help advertise these websites online and in turn, online websites advertise these social media apps. This whole process helps trick online users into entering websites and buying things they weren't looking for in the first place. While some don't think these online posts are useful, I think social media knows how to target an audience, so the ad that comes on your screen is made so you're interested in buying this thing or watching this video. In this source, the author says: "Social commerce allows retailers to merge customer relationships and sales management, as social media allows brands to connect directly with their buyers.In fact, studies show that 62% of retail companies that already use social commerce reported that it improved communication with their customers." (//www.facebook.com/HubWorksApp). In reference to what the author says, I believe that social media indirectly helps the economy through helping online websites get more subscribers and buyers. Contrary to what people might think, social media is related to the economy, as the world now lives with the internet and more people need to start adapting to this new world of technology.

Politics is changing with more influence from social media. While it doesn't seem obvious that social media can help politicians win elections, there are many ways they can be useful. Without the internet, politicians usually made speeches and campaigns using paper flyers, but using social media helped them win more voters. The author of a source explains how social media helps politicians when she says, "From this moment on, politicians around the world began to share not only political proposals, but also private elements such as family photos, associations or personal opinions, trying to generate a warmer and more intimate impression with voters." (por Foro Juridico et al.). I'm surprised that some people don't think social media influences politics. It is clear that with some opinionated posts you can gain a lot of followers who later become voters. A major disadvantage of using social media in politics is the risk of being blackmailed by things you've shared online in the past. This is a very popular topic, as candidates try to ruin each other's reputation for their own benefit. Although this is a possible result of the use of social media in politics, I think many politicians already come prepared in case of blackmail, so they still get involved with social media. It is clear that winning many voters is a greater benefit than a potential risk that a reputation will be ruined.

Social media can influence people, but it's politicians who need to show the right picture of them to get more votes.

In all the cases mentioned, there were always more benefits than disadvantages.

There are many negative perspectives on social media, but these cases show that social media are very useful. I think we should aspire to work so that these disadvantages no longer exist. If we do this, we can create something that everyone can benefit from. After all, we always want to create something beneficial and not harmful. If we use social media correctly many things would improve and that is why we need to make more efforts to use social networks to their potential.

汉字作为华夏民族的记录工具已有三千年历史。它的对于我们的重要性毫无疑问。作为世界上仅存的非表 音文字，汉字以它优美的表现能力和它背后所代表的文化和历史而闻名于世。那么，你又对汉字了解多少 呢？ 在中国的很多神话中，汉字是由一个叫仓颉的人所创造的。但其实，将任何一种文字的创造都归功 于一个人现任是很荒谬的说法。鲁迅先生也在他的《门外文谈》中提到：“在社会里，仓颉不只有一个”。这 汉字是我们老祖先在不断的尝试中提炼出来最能适合本民族的书写系统。关于它的起源，其实说法不一。有 人说汉字产生于夏代，但更多的历史证据表明，汉字源于商朝。当然，现在历史学家，语言学家和考古学家 在争论的事情，我自己就没有什么资格来评判这些专业人士的看法。 汉字在语言学分类中属于表意文字，而这种文字的特点就是文字和语音方面不直接发生联系。就比 如“日”这个字，单独看他本身根本不知道念“rì”。虽说汉字也是有一些发音辅助系统的，但在汉语拼音之前所 有的声旁本质上都是由他们最初所代表的图像演变过来的，本质上其实还是和象形脱不开关系。 关于汉字的结构，东汉的许慎在他的《说文解字·叙》里给出了他的理解：“一曰指事，二曰象形， 形声，四曰会意，五曰转注，六曰假借。“ 汉字的结构也大致分为这几种：指事，象形，形声，会意，转注和 ，其中转注字较为复杂，且涉及字数较少，本文将不与讨论。 象形字顾名思义，就是指客观的事物用字给描绘出来。最典型的例子就是”日，月，山，州和矢“这 最基础的汉字。如果我们去看这些字在甲骨文中的样子，其实能感觉到这是最简单易懂的一类字，即使放到 现在看，这些字中的大多数还是保持这几千年前的样子。但是这种造字法有两大缺陷，一是图像难以统一 每个人画的都不一样，二是局限性大，只能用来表示很简单的物品。 指事字，这种字其实就是在象形文字的基础上加以解释，或者说加以标记而形成的一种字。举个例 子来说，上和下这两个字就是在一个横线的基础上在横线上下加点从而表达他们的意思。本和末其实也是在 “木”这个字的上下面加上一点从而达到表达“本来，本身”和“末梢”这种意思。但指事字在所有的汉字中也算是 少数，因为绝大部分的字都不需要用指事的方式。在说明客观物体时，基本上用的都是象形，而在体现抽象 念的时候，一般都用会意来取代。这样一来，指事字的数量也就大大减少了。 会意字，指的就是把两个或者两个以上的象形字组合到一起，组成一个新的字。 一般来说基本就是 在一个本字的基础上添加偏旁部首。像“步”这个字，在水中走路就是“涉”，要登山就是“陟”，以此类推。我们 常说的三个什么什么的字也都是属于这种汉字。 像三个火“焱”，三个水“淼，三个木”森“，三个土“垚”。 形声字，是通过形声法，也就是用部首标记意思，本字表声的方法创造的汉字。像以“鱼”作为部首的 字：鲤，鲫，鳗，鳝。这种汉字相较于象形字的造字法更简单易懂，因此，形声字的数量也是汉字中最多的 代的《说文解字》中形声字约占整体汉字总数的88%，而清代的《康熙字典》中，所占比例约为90%。但在 的演变过程中，很多的部首所表达的含义发生了改变。比如“蛟”字，它的本意是龙的意思，却用的是“虫”作 部首，像这样的例子还有很多。 假借字，即字于本意无关的汉字。一般都是在口语中需要一个词的时候，在当时的书面语中没有相 对应的词，就直接拿同音字来代替。拿亦字来举例，《说文解字》中对此的解释为：“人之臂‘亦’也，从大 之形。”其实指的就是“腋”，但后来因为读音关系就作为副词了，从而也就有了当代的“腋”替代原字本意的情 了。 字形说完了，但是汉字也不是从一开始就是我们现在所看到这这种。他也是经过了几千年的演变逐 渐成型的一个过程。汉字的书写形式大致分为七种，早期的书体受到书写媒介的影响很大，且字数少，因此 很多一字多用的情况，导致现在我们也没法破译所有已发掘的甲骨文和金文的残片。 甲骨文是中国现在已发现的最早字体，现在已有的残片多源于河南安阳（殷墟）。所有的字体，无 外，都是书写在甲骨上的，甲骨文也因此而得名。由于距今已有三千余年，甲骨文的书写形式在现代人看来 分不规范，字的体型不固定，写法不固定，书写方向不固定，这也给现存的文字破译工作增添了很多难度。 金文始于周朝时期，大多刻在青铜器上，因此也称为“钟鼎文”。相较于甲骨文每片只有几行的形式 金文用作记录使用的字数增加了许多。其中比较出名的是西周《大盂鼎》上的铭文，足足有近三百个字。从 构上来看，金文相比之下笔画较为简单，但是不统一的字体的问题依旧存在。 篆书可以分为大篆和小篆，前者始于春秋战国时期，而后者则是秦始皇统一中国后所推行的文字。 篆线条流畅，结构整洁，打下了方块字的基础。且异体字较少，同一个汉字不同写法的情况逐渐减少。小篆 是在大篆的基础上经由形变，伪变及省变所简化的一种字体，以省变为主，逐渐开始隶变。 隶书的前身的秦朝时期在大众百姓中流传的草篆。而真正的隶书形成于西汉时期，因此也称为“汉 隶”。隶变是中国文字史中的分水岭，隶书以前，汉字还多多少少保留了一些象形文字的传统，但在隶变后 汉字已经完全变成了符号辅助工具。在字形上，改圆为方，线条上，改弧为直。该字体也是当前中国人在没 多少古文字研究基础的基础上所能够读懂的最早的字体。我们都很熟悉的《三峡》的作者郦道元就是用隶书 书写《水经注》的。 草书是一种和汉隶并行存在的一种书法字体。其字体飘逸，行云流水，笔画连绵，书写迅速。这种 体求快，所以只需要有个汉字的基本结构就够了。但也正是因为这种风格，导致很多草书的作品除了书写者 本人都看不太懂。因此，大多只用于个人的作品和笔记。 楷书成型于东汉时期。是代隶书通行的字体，一直沿用至今，也有人称作“今隶”。 它笔画平直，结 方正，相较于隶书展的更开。我们现在所使用的字帖，书法练习材料大多都是楷书。小时候练习写的也都是 楷书。在楷书中，有一个“永字八法”，就是讲“永”这个字，在楷书中包括了所有汉字所使用的笔画，也就是 们现在所说的“点，横，竖，勾，挑，撇，捺。 最后一种字体--行书，成型于魏晋时期，是所有字体中出现最晚的字体，但同时，也是我个人和所有 中国人最常用的书写方法。此书介于楷书和草书之前，融合了两种字体的特点。书写方便，但字体独立，因 好写也好认。从魏晋时期到现在，行书一直都是最受老百姓欢迎的字体，是最有群众基础的。 希望这边文章能帮大家揭开汉字的神秘面纱，了解汉字的历史。也希望在学校里学习中文的同学， 多用汉字，多写汉字。

In September, the number of patients with coronavirus increased. In Jordan, we're all scared because the coronavirus is so serious. In September, 4000 people got covid. Now we have 400000 cases. The safe area of King's Academy protected us from the coronavirus for two months. At the college, the students were very happy. We walk with our friends, ride bicycles, watch movies and play games every day. In the school, we are not afraid because it is safe in the college and there is no virus. But in 2021, the coronavirus changed seriously, and now there are several new coronavirus patients in our school. Now I'm in the hotel and I'm scared. I didn't go home because I was afraid of getting sick and then I gave it to my family. I hope the new coronavirus will disappear soon.

[I] I am swimming in the sea.

Heading forward has not only been a mission to accomplish; I knew it from the day that I was born.

I can hardly tell how long I have been swimming. Or maybe I am simply unwilling to recall how long I have been groping and drowning in the icy water.

Anyway, that doesn’t matter.

Although the distance I have traveled is almost across the earth, which I could be so proud of, it is nothing more than an invisible shackle or an endless abyss to me. I know that many fishes envy me for the number of places I have been to and the unique experiences I have got. After deciding to head far away with no break, many people tell me that I cannot speak a word for the fishes that stayed in their hometown for all their lives, even though they have no idea that I might be eager for life at home more than they do. Therefore, I have never dared to complain about my life story, for I fear of people’s disagreement. However, I do know deep inside that I am not happy.

Compromising a choice doesn’t necessarily mean a compromise from the heart.

It doesn’t matter if people would criticize me as being avid for things that I cannot obtain; I just want to live like other fishes in my hometown.

I once heard, “There is a kind of sadness, which I cannot speak out, but can only hide.” I guess that maybe it is cowardice that makes people stay silent.

[II] It was either early in the morning or late at night; I was not very clear.

During my voyage, I met Shallow-Sea Fish. It was a rare situation; shallow-sea fishes weren’t frequent visitors. In this dark and terrifying sea, I hardly met fishes as pretty as her; so pretty that I couldn’t move my almost blind eyes from her. Maybe it was because of the excitement as a newcomer that she was disorderly trying to swim up.

I liked her very much, since the first time I saw her. I envied her for having those silvery white scales glowing brilliantly, which were pure and innocent; I envied her for having eyes that reflect her world, which contained colors that have long disappeared from my world. She looked so unique, making me seem so ugly in comparison.

I didn’t step forward because I feared that the thick darkness on me would sting her eyes. Those beautiful creatures who own dreams have never belonged to the same world that I do. Yet, Shallow-Sea Fish swam towards me. Maybe it was because she rarely saw a fish like me that she was too excited. She couldn’t help closing her eyes and staggering my dedicated gaze when she came close. I awkwardly greeted her to introduce my identity that consisted of no name, no home, and no future. I forgot about my inferiority complex, trying my best to pour my story out, only hoping for her empathy towards one minor habit or experience I had, so that I could keep her with me for longer. After all, I had almost forgotten what was confidence, dream, or youthfulness.

Maybe it was because of her eagerness to share that she interrupted my words. She told me that she was lost and wanted to go home; she asked me where the shallow sea was. Her eagerness towards the answer reminded me, though unwillingly, she was different from me.

Truthful enough, I was nothing more than a stranger in her adventure from whom she asked for directions.

I once heard, “There is a kind of loss, which I cannot speak out, but can only experience.”Probably, it is because I also look down upon my despicable thoughts and desires.

Decoding characters By: Yinzhe Liu The Chinese characters have been the writing system in China for about 3000 years. There's no doubt that this writing plays a huge role in the history and modern-day China. As the only non-phonetic writing system in the world, Chinese characters are famous for its expressiveness and the culture and historical background it represents. But are you familiar with these strange symbols? What do you know about them?

In a lot of myths and legends in China, these symbols were created by someone called Cang Jie. But actually, it is hilarious to attribute the invention and improvement of a particular writing system to one specific person. Lu Xun talked about this in his A Talk as an Outsider: “There are numerous Cang Jie in the society.” These characters are created by our ancestors, gone through multiple trials, and finally found the most suitable way for our people to record information. As for its origin, there are several theories. Some say that our characters originated from the Xia dynasty, but others will argue that they are from the Shang period. Well, if it is a hugely sensitive topic that modern-day historians, linguists, and archeologists are still quarreling about, I don’t think I can argue with them using my still-primitive knowledge.

Chinese characters are classified as logograms, this means that the writing itself isn't related to the sound of it. In other words, the writing has nothing to do with its pronunciation. Like the character 日, you can't tell it from its shape that it is pronounced as rì. Although as time went on, some phonetic components evolved and they help with the pronunciation, essentially, they still evolved from the symbolic characters, therefore still connected to its root and original meaning.

Regarding the structure and method of creating characters, Xu Shen from the Eastern Han Dynasty said this in his Analytical Dictionary of Characters: “First, it refers to things, two is pictograph, three is pictophonetical, four is understanding, five is reinjection, six is false borrowing.” These are the most agreed types of methods for constructing a character. Because of the complication and limited amount of reinjecting characters, this article will not take it into consideration.

Pictograph, what it means is it draws things out by looking at its shape. These are the most basic characters. Some of the classical examples would include but not limited to: 日，月，山，州 and ，矢. If we look back to the origin of these characters, the oracle bone writing, it’s pretty easy to tell what it means by its shape, this still applies to most of the modern characters that belong to this group. But there are two major problems with this, first of all, its lack of unity, meaning everyone draws differently for the same thing, secondly, it can only represent very simple and limited things, meaning can’t express abstract ideas.

Indicative characters, (also characters that refer to things), this type of characters are the ones having supplementary explanatory components added to the pictographic writings. For example, the character 上and下 is essentially adding a stroke on top of the basic vertical line or under it. The characters 本and末 are also the same, using the basic root of the character for tree 木, and add a stroke on top and under the root, these two characters means base (the base of a tree) and tip (the tip the branch) respectively. But this type is not that popular among the other groups, since it's not very practical. If someone wants to talk about a specific object, they can use the pictograph, if they want to express abstract concepts, they’ll use the ideographic one. Therefore, the number of characters that belong to this group is also very limited.

Ideographic characters, also known as characters for understanding. It means combining multiple pictograms to form a new character. Like the character 步 meaning walk, walking in water is 涉, climbing a mountain would be 陟, something like that. The combination of three characters to one character would also be in this category, three fire 焱，three water 淼，three trees 森, and three dirt (earth) 垚.

Phonograms, or pictophonetic characters are a group that uses radicals to indicate meaning and using the root to represent sound. An example would be using the radical fish 鱼 to create the characters of different types of fish: 鲤(carp), 鲫 (crucian), 鳗（eel), and 鳝(another name for eel). This type of method of creating characters is pretty straightforward, thus, phonograms are the most used types of character throughout history. In the Analytical Dictionary of Characters during the Han Dynasty, the percentage of phonograms is 88%, in the Kangxi dictionary during the Qing dynasty, 90% of the characters are pictophonetic. But the meaning of certain radicals changes during the course of history, like the character 蛟, it is another name for dragon, but it uses the radical that represents insect 虫, there are multiple examples like this.

False borrowing characters, which means that the character itself has nothing to do with its original meaning. It often happens when a new word appears in spoken language, but there is no written counterpart for that character, therefore, they will use a character that sounds the same but has a different meaning to substitute. For instance, in the Analytical Dictionary of Characters the character 亦 represent the armpit, since it pretty much looks like a person with two dots under its armpits. But afterward, its usage is more like an adverb than its original meaning. Therefore they’ve created the character 腋 to replace the original 亦 for its meaning “armpit”.

This is all about the different types of characters we can see in modern Chinese, but what we should understand is that written language is continuously evolving. It is a process that takes thousands of years from the most ancient writing to modern characters. The forms of Chinese writing can be classified into 7 groups. The earlier the written record is, the fewer characters that are available at that time, consequently, the more it means for one character, meaning one character can have multiple meanings. This feature also makes the decoding process very hard for linguists and archeologists.

The oracle bone writing is the earliest form of Chinese writing that we know. Most of the relics of this form have been discovered in the city of An Yang in He Nan province. All the characters were written on the oracles bone of a turtle, this is also the origin of its name. Because it is almost 3000 years from now, the writing style is considered unstandardized. The forms of these characters are not fixed, meaning that they have a difference in size, the way of writing is unfixed, meaning that multiple characters are representing one character and also vice versa, the direction of writing is unfixed, meaning that it can be written from left to right and from right to left. All these features make it extremely difficult to uncrack the meaning.

The bronze inscription was usually written on bronzeware. Contrasting to the oracle inscription in which they only have a few sentences on oracles, bronze inscriptions have paragraphs. The most important one would be the writing on The Great Ding of Yu, a royal container for food, it has more than 300 characters on it! Structurally speaking, the bronze inscription simplified a lot of characters from the oracle writing, but the problem with non-conformity still exists.

The seal character (Zhuan shu) is divided into two groups, Greater Seal (Da Zhuan) and Lesser Seal (Xiao Zhuan).

The former one is the type during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and the latter one is the character that had been promoted by Qin Shi Huang after he unified all the different countries in China. The lines of strokes in Greater Seal are more smooth, and the structure is more organized, it forms the basis of modern Chinese characters. At the same time, there are more conformities in it. Lesser Seal is more like a simplified version of Greater Seal, it's more simpler mainly in terms of strokes.

The Clerical script (Li Shu) is a type of character used in the Western Han Dynasty. It evolves from the cursive seal character in the Qin dynasty, mainly used by ordinary people. There is a huge improvement between Clerical script and the former script, this is called Lilization (Li Bian), it is when a character loses its pictographic features and becomes signs and symbols specifically for recording. It changes cursive strokes to angular ones, more like the modern-day version. In fact, it is the oldest readable version of character for modern-day ordinary people who don't have any knowledge of ancient Chinese writing.

Grass writing (Cao Shu) is a form of writing that coexists with the Clerical script. It features a cursive and non-stopping version of writing. This type of writing really emphasizes speed, therefore, the script only needs to have a basic structure of the character. Also because of this, some grass writing by famous calligraphers in China can only be read by themselves, making it more suitable for personal writings.

Kai Shu or regular scripts evolved from the Clerical script. It eventually surpassed the Clerical script as an official script for writing Chinese in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It has more expended and stretches compared to the Clerical one, but that is also the only difference between them. Nowadays, all the models for practicing character writing on the market are all in this script, it is also the script that we use when we start learning individual characters in elementary school. A very interesting phenomenon is the character 永, it contains all the strokes in modern Chinese writing!

The last script is called the running script (Xing Shu). It began from the Wei Jin period. This is also a script that we use in our lives and the most efficient way to write characters. Its writing style is kind of in between the grass writing and the regular script. It simplified and blended several strokes together, but because the basic form hasn’t changed, it is still easily recognizable. Kind of like cursive writing in English. From the Wei Jin period to modern-day China, this has always been the most popular writing style among Chinese people.

Mă readun, îmi readun ideile și încep să trăiesc timpuri noi, creez ideile și spun: “Gata!

Le știu pe toate".. Când scriu ceva mă regăsesc, mă adun, adun metafore, le îmbin cu amintirile trecutului și cu dezbinările timpurilor noaste. Ador să scriu și să-mi analizez gândurile persistente și iată-mă scriind acum despre cineva o sa treacă în gândul tău în timp ce continui de citit.

Omul care ți-a binecuvântat cursul vieții mereu cu prezenta lui nu numai la bucurie dar mai ales la necaz, mana care ți s-a întins înainte de a îndrăzni a cere. Nevoia de a răspunde la rândul tău cu reciprocitate, cu bucuria de a fi ,,acolo" atunci când este nevoie de tine necondiționat și sincer. Un sentiment înălțător este, să ai un om care să te înțeleagă în toate, acela poate fi o mama, un tata, un prieten, un partener de iubire, sau che-ar un străin.

끝이 난 37일의 여정, 이어진 학생들의 ‘아쉬움’… 이승혁 2021년 3월 7일을 기준으로 하여 본교 킹즈아카데미에서 교내 코로나 안전환경을 조성하기 위해 이어져 오던 격리 절차는 끝이 났다.

3월 7일 저녁, 각 학년의 온라인 회의 이후 다수의 학생이 귀가 하였고, 이어진 3월 8일은 특수지정휴일을 적용하여 남은 학생들의 귀가를 도왔다. 현재 교내엔 소수의 학생과 직원만 남아있는 상태이다. 예정보다 훨씬 일찍 끝나버린 교내 활동에 학생들은 다양한 반응을 보였다. 9학년에 재학중인 임주혁 씨는 “짧게나마 친구들(과) 만나고 인 퍼슨(in-person)으로 수업한 건 굉장히 좋았다.” 라고 하며 코로나 바이러스 대유행 속에서도 다국적 바탕을 가진 친구들과 재회할 수 있었다는 것에 대해 상당히 긍정적으로 평가하였다. 익명의 A씨 또한 “오프라인 수업 자체가 좋았다.” 며 대면 수업이 주었던 질 높은 교육환경의 장점을 강조하였다. 허나 좋은 점만 있는 것은 아니였다. 익명의 A 씨는 “버블에 늦게 참가하여 다른 학생들 보다도 오프라인 기간이 짧았었다…그 점이 아쉬웠다…”라며 예상보다 너무 일찍 끝나버린 버블에 불만을 표하였다. 임주혁씨도 “체육관에서 운동도 하고 싶었고, 댄스 퍼포먼스도 해보고 싶었다…” 라며 밖에 나갈 수 있었던 시간에도 많은 것이 제한 된 상황이었던 것에 대해 아쉬움을 나타냈다. 학교에선 아직 방과후 활동인 co-curricular activities도 시작하지 않았었고, 체육관, 운동장을 포함한 다수의 체육시설 이용 또한 금지되어 있었던 상황이였다. 학교에서 제공하는 다양한 활동들과 시설 이용에 대한 기대감을 가지고 있었던 학생들에게 일찍 끝나버린 버블은 아쉬움을 더했다. 특히 이번 학기에는 다수의 학생들이 저번학기 보다 더 안정적인 버블 속 교내 생활을 기대하고 있었다. 확진자가 증가하는 가운데 어수선하게 끝나버린 버블은 아직 완벽한 안전환경 조성을 위해선 풀어야 할 숙제가 많다는 것을 실감하게 해준다. 현 상황을 겪은 이상, 같은 일에 대비하고 내년을 기획한다면, 다음 학기에는 더욱 양질의 버블 형성을 기대할 수 있을 것 같다. 봄 학기 종료까진 (3월 12 기준) 약 두달 가량이 남은 가운데, 학교는 온라인으로 계속 될 예정이

I’ve never thought of writing in Romanian before. To let someone read my "work". To be criticized, but certainly every time the moments in which I write are magnificent... I get myself back together, I get my ideas back and I start living new times, I create ideas and I say: “That's it! I know them all".. When I write something, I find myself. I gather, I gather metaphors, I combine them with the memories of the past and with the divisions of our times. I love to write and analyze my persistent thoughts and here I am, writing about someone that might cross your mind while you continue reading.

The human being who has always blessed the course of your life with their presence not only in times of joy but especially in times of trouble, the hand that reached out to you before you dared to ask. The need to respond in turn with reciprocity, with the joy of “being there" when you are needed unconditionally and sincerely. An uplifting feeling, to have a human being who understands you at all times, whether that is a mother, a father, a friend, a lover, or even a stranger.

Mental health is a very crucial topic that is not as common in our society. It is not recognizable as much in our societies just simply due to our traditions and an old-school mindset. When one talks about their mental struggles most reactions can not be as supportive as they should be, and that is pretty destructive for one's mental health.

Mental health should be normalized in our societies so people could feel safe and loved in their communities. Our culture is well-known for its inclusivity and hospitality, and it becomes an issue when we don't support one another; as that results in disunity in our society. Depression, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, and other mental health issues should not be mocked at any cost, and instead, they should be treated. When we help one another and recognize mental health that will impact many lives for the better. It is okay to feel that you are not okay, humanity isn't under the basis of perfectionism. On the contrary, we all are under the basis of imperfections that we need to value and adapt to.

Because our imperfections teach us many valuable life-changing morals that will help us to progress and be better versions of ourselves. If you or any person you know struggles with any mental health issues, please know that there are many resources that you or anyone can use.

Bubble Popped! The 37-Day-Long Journey at King’s Academy Ends By: Seunghyeok

As of March 7, 2021, the quarantine process, which had been carried out to create a Corona-free environment at King's Academy, has ended.

On the evening of March 7, a number of students returned home after an online meeting with the class deans, and on March 8, a special designated holiday was applied to help the remaining students return home.

Currently, only a few students and staff remain in the school.

The students responded with multiple emotions to the bubble which ended much earlier than scheduled. Juhyeok Lim, a ninth-grade student, positively appraised about being able to reunite with friends with multinational backgrounds even during the Corona virus pandemic, and said, “It was very nice to meet my friends even for a short time and have an in-person class experience." Anonymous student A also stressed the advantages of the high-quality educational environment given by face-to-face classes, saying, "The offline classes themselves were good."

On the other hand, negative feedback was also shared.

Anonymous student A expressed his/her disappointment for the bubble that ended too soon, saying, “I participated late into the Bubble, and my offline period was shorter than other students…It was such a shame… “. Juhyeok Lim also said, “I wanted to work out at the gym and participate in the dance performance...” as he added his disappointment for the limited situation and restrictions even when he was able to go outside.

The school had not yet started the after-school co-curricular activities, and many sports facilities, including the gym and stadium, were also banned from access. That is why the abrupt end of the bubble was a big disappointment for the students who had high expectations for these activities and facilities.

Especially this semester, many students were expecting a more stable campus life than last semester. Therefore, the bubble, which ended amid an increase in the number of confirmed cases, makes us realize that there is still more work to do to create a perfectly safe environment.

With about two months left until the end of the spring semester, school will continue online.

The Language of ‘Care’ By: Fajer Saraireh ‘22

The K.A.R.E program is a King’s Academy resilience effort curriculum that aims to exercise the ‘emotional’ muscles of high and middle school students involving many teachers and staff. The program teaches students, teachers, and staff how to take care of their wellbeing, how to maintain a healthy schedule, and how to adapt to the different circumstances that they may face. In my interview with Ms. Nada Dakhil, the founder of the K.A.R.E program, she says, “the program uses the language of care by doing virtual sessions to aware students of how to take care of their well-being. The program uses the language of care by emotionally supporting and helping students to get through the tough situations that they face.” As a student, I got a lot of emotional support from the K.A.R.E program during my extended hotel quarantine which helped me to feel safer, more motivated to do work, and made me more active in the school community. Finally, the K.A.R.E program does not only use the language of care to help students, teachers, and staff but it passes this language to us so we can use it with other people in our daily life…
