Students participate in Out of the Darkness campus walks to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Walk will be held on Sunday, April 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. By Samantha Biastre Staff Writer The first annual Out of the Darkness campus walk is coming to KU on Sunday, April 26. The walk will take place around the DMZ on the south side of campus. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. and the walk will then be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is no registration fee and students can

register the day of the walk or log onto afsp.org/walk and click on Out of the Darkness Campus Walks and then click “Find an event.” Students can either register individually or with a team. So far, there are 381 participants signed up to walk and $5,460.00 has been raised for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The walk is for the AFSP and is hosted by KU Clinical Services. AFSP was founded in 1987, and is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through

research, education and advocacy. With the help of the Out of the Darkness walkers and donors, AFSP has a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20 percent by 2025. Two of the clinical services nurses, Kathy Loomis and Janet Whitehall came up with the idea of bringing a walk to campus, so “people won’t be ashamed to come out about their struggles, and to know that depression is an illness that can be treated,” according to Whitehall. However, the fall will be the last semester that the program will be accepting students. After they graduate, the undergraduate program will be totally removed from the university. The master’s

After years of planning, renovations on the Cub Cafe will begin next month, shortly after graduation. Dining Services expect completion by January 2016. These renovations plan to create new seating options to the cafe as well as introduce new and improved food options. “This portion of the renovations will cost anywhere between $7 million to $9 million dollars and all of the renovations, Bear’s Den included, will cost $30 million dollars in total,” said Kent Dahlquist, director of Housing, Residence Life, and Dining Ser-

vices. According to Dahlquist, the current outdoor seating areas of the Cub Cafe will be eliminated and the building itself will be pushed out farther. This will allow a glass window patio-like area to be created in that space. The cafe will also be split into three other sections. These new sections of the cafe, similar to the glass patio, will have different seating options. In one zone, there will be countertops accompanied by barstools. In another zone, there will be padded chairs and couches available to lounge in. The third zone will have booths. While the renovations are in progress, Dahlquist said, “The Academic Forum and South Dining Hall will not be able to accommodate all student dining needs.” In order to combat this issue, the Multipurpose room and See DINING, page 3
