BIG

CREEPY-CRAWLIES by Malcolm Palmer

It is quite impossible to spend your lifetime studying and watching birds without being aware of the other flying animals, most of which are insects. If you are a ringer of birds, you often come into close contact with some of them, anyway – especially the dragonflies that get tangled up in your nets – and, boy, do they take some getting out, if you want to avoid damaging them. Bees and hornets and suchlike insects get caught up as well, from time to time, and they are much less welcome still, as trying to extract them can earn you a nasty sting. Back to dragonflies: they are fantastic creatures, many of them undertaking long annual journeys, often crossing seas, deserts and mountains. They are very habitat-faithful, some species favouring mountain streams, others lowland marshes, but all of them seem to prefer wetland habitats of one sort or another. Their identification can be a challenge. Despite some very good books on the subject, what is quite clear is that the insects don’t read them, and you occasionally find individuals that don’t appear to match the characteristics of any species illustrated. The most obvious autumn dragonflies around our area are little red Red-veined Darters, which seem to infest the area of shallow or temporary ponds. Hunting slowly over bigger dykes and pools, you may see the big, impressive Blue Emperor, which always holds its body with a downward curve. One pitfall if you are interested in getting serious about dragonflies is that females are sometimes quite different from males! (A bit like ourselves?) Dragonflies have eyesight ten times more acute than our own – so they never fly into you – and their worth as consumers of the pestilential mosquito cannot be overestimated. Another very obvious group of creepies is the grashopper family. They can be incredibly numerous in dry, grassy habitat, sometimes surprising you when a big one jumps up in front of you. The

Spanish name for them is Saltamontes – mountain-jumper. They are, like dragonflies, quite harmless. And so is the big, science-fiction-looking Praying Mantis, which can be green or any shade of brown, depending on its habitat. The Mantis sways around mesmerically, awaiting its prey in the form of small insects. There are, in fact, some 2,200 species of Praying mantis throughout the world, some so big that their victims may include frogs, small birds and even rodents. They are, like the dragonflies, strictly nocturnal, as they rely on eyesight for hunting. An unpleasant habit the females have is devouring the male after mating – a somewhat extreme version of the human marital experience. The Cockroach family is a very successful group of insects, especially the big, reddish ‘American Cockroach’ – its origins are unclear, but it certainly doesn’t hail from America, even though the States is rife with them, and probably comes from Central Asia. An all too familiar sight in summer here, they will fly in on warm nights, or find a way in via your drains. A satisfying crunch is the only reward when your size nine is applied. Crickets are another common group, more audible than visible as a rule, and there are several species – the Domestic Cricket being the commonest, often inhabiting buildings where it will feed on just about anything, from leftovers to dead insects. The insect world is a fascinating one, and one which repays further study. We

just have to be thankful, I reckon, that they don’t come in larger sizes – we shouldn’t stand a chance!

What brought you to Gran Alacant? I moved here with my young family to become the Sales & Marketing Manager, after 12 years in the MASA UK office. Gran Alacant ticks every single box for us. Great beaches, schools, close to the city and the perfect mix of nationalities. Almost a year on and we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. So are MASA International builders? A lot of people, especially fellow Gran Alacant neighbours get MASA International confused with Grupo Masa the builder. We share four letters in our respective names, and that is as far it goes. MASA International are property agents rather than constructors. How are MASA International coping with the downturn? Well, I won’t be retiring this year for sure! Like other agents, we have seen a downturn in buyers from

Having been a tough year for all of us, no matter whether we’re in business or working or retired, we thought we’d speak to one of the region’s estate agents to find out how they’ve found things and to discover a little bit about MASA International. We spoke to Gran Alacant resident and Sales & Marketing Manager, Paul Payne - here’s what he had to say...

I T A RN

the UK and Ireland. Over the last 28 years we are fortunate enough to have built up a large network of offices and agents throughout Europe, so we don’t have to rely on just one or two markets. The last year has seen a big upturn in buyers from Norway, Sweden and Russia in particular.

E T N I

So what would you say to those who want to sell in Gran Alacant? Buyers are (rightly so) very choosy now and it is essential that anyone selling their property has it clean, tidy and in good decorative order. Of course, the price has to be competitive and you have ensure that details of your property reaches as many people as possible. Just putting a ‘Se Vende’ sign from the Chinese Shop or listing with a local agent who closed half the day and has no clients from one week to the next is naturally not the best recipe for a quick sale.

L A ON

Do you have a message for JD readers? If any Jungle Drums readers would like MASA International to sell their property, they can be assured that their home will be promoted both online and through the largest network of Spanish Property Specialists in Europe. They will also have the added bonus that I am completely biased when it comes to Gran Alacant and I intend to bring the wonders of G.A to even more people than ever.

LORETO CASCALES Dear friends, We are in December, the last month of the year and I think this is the right moment to make a little remmenbering of what the 2.009 has brought to the people living in Gran Alacant. I sincerely think that this has been a very important year for all the citizens of this area of Santa Pola because a lot of improvements, investments and infrastructures have came to us; wide pedestrian ways at Avenida Mediterráneo and Noruega with trees and benches, the first municipal park (that will be completely finished by the end of this year), the three new viewpoints, the playgrounds for children and the petanca courts, the repairment of a lot of raining water pipes, the streets that have been concreted and painted, the new activities in our halls at the Life Resort complex, the creation of new associations in Gran Alacant, the closer collaboration of these and other asociations (I would like to thank all the associations we have for their work and effort to do so many things for Gran Alacant), the fiestas of Gran Alacant, the roundabout between Avenida Escandinavia and Mediterraneo, the new pedestrian way in Avenida Escandinavia, the new area of El Clot de Galvany (in Avenida Carabasí), the new doctor we have working at the Medical Centre and the pedatrician (I have to tell you we are going to have another pediatrician in January next year working there), the enclosing of the Sport Hall Centre... and so many things that I would need more paper to write down. (You can see also that I have been fulfilling all the promises I made you about the things I told you I was going to do and you will see that all the things I told you and that I will tell you will be done little by little) I can assure you I feel good, very good, looking at what I have obtained for the people living in Gran Alacant and I would like to ask for next year only two things: the first one is that I woulk like to be able to bring the same amount of good things for this area or even more for next year (and I can assure you I am going to fight and work with a lot of strength to do it) and the second one that you will be living in Gran Alacant to be able to see it and enjoy it. I hope you will enjoy also of all the activities we have prepared for Christmas time for you and to let you know that you will find the schedule and all the information about them at the Municipal Office or at the Municipal Library. Finally, I hope you will enjoy this Christmas with your family and the people you want and that the new year 2.010 will bring you what you wish (or at least as much as possible of it). Dear friends, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

WATCH OUT...!!!

Hi guys maureen’s about!

Hi Guy’s well another year has gone by and lots of changes have been made on Gran Alacant. The Ayuntamiento have spent a lot of money this year on improving all areas on Gran Alacant. The viewing area at the top of Ave Escandinavia is now finished and you can get some wonderful photos of Alicante Bay. The children’s play area outside the civic centre was finished and is being enjoyed by the children and parents. The new park has been started and should be finished for next summer and a big thank you to Loreto who has arranged for the R.B.Legion to have a remembrance garden within the park. They will be able to hold a service there each November. We have also seen the finishing of all the new pavements and more play areas at the bottom of the hill. Work has also started on the revamping of the clot. Talking of the clot made me remember people we lost this year. The Jungle Drum’s columnist Brian Conduit who lost his brave fight with cancer, and another JD friend, Frankie Candlish. They are both sadly missed by their many friends here on G/A. We have had two secret gardens built this year, and it just shows what can be done when communities work together. We had the first Gran Alacant calendar this year and were going to do it again next year. This time with the GIRLS. So all you bar owners start thinking who you want to represent your bar I will be round to see you in Jan/Feb. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION would like to thank every one who contributed to the poppy appeal or supported the appeal in any way. They raised 3273 Euros. Which will be staying in Spain to help our service men and their families living here. We have seen a lot of people returning to England because of the economic crises and I am sad to lose such good friends but I wish them all the best.

And now I WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU ALL A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

FOULEYE’S TRAIN OF THOUGHT ! Let it never be said that Fouleye does not inform! Following vague rumours, faint misleading newspaper maps and word-of-mouth stories, our intrepid La Marina bloodhound has sniffed out the real truth of the ‘San Fulgencio Express’, otherwise known as the Tourist Train that is now running around the Urb. Want to know more? Read on … -The road train runs round the Urb, roughly in a circle from our Tourist office to the Bahia de las Dunas commercial area (Mercadonna, Lidl and Iceland area) and back. -The round trip takes approximately one hour, five minutes between stops. -There are 11 stops in total including two termini, the Tourist Office and Mercadonna. -Uses are both tourist or shopping. -The cost is €1.50 per trip, plus a discount of 50 cents can be obtained by producing a travel card, obtained from the Town Hall by application form, Padron and two half passportsized photographs. -Times : starting at the Tourist office – on the hour, mornings from 9am, 10, 11, 12, 1, and afternoons at 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, returning at five minutes to the hour 9.55, 10.55, 11.55, 12.55, and 1.55, afternoons from 4.55, 5.55, 6.55, 7.55 and 8.55. -Stops – starting from the Tourist Office, adding 5 minutes per stop, official names first, Fouleye’s explanation in brackets 1. Berna/Piscina (Sports centre, swimming pool, bowls 2. Parque del Danubio (The Computer Company, Tienda Cita) 3. La Marina* (half way along Calle La Marina*, between the junctions with Calle Lope de Vega and Calle Berna. 4. Mar Cantabrico (Iceland). 5. Mar Cantabrico (Lidl). 6. Mar Tireno (Mercadonna - alternative terminus to the Tourist Office) 7. Parque del Poo (Avenida Moscow). 8. Francisco de Quevado (Consum square). 9. Parque del Pisuerga (La Marina Animal Welfare, phase 4). 10. Avenida de Europa (from Londres turn left by Dos Mas/Enaybes down towards market, stop on corner into Europa). 11. Tourist Office (via Calle Valencia and the Forest road). Right, then! That’s the official public-service side done! Now then… what the Sam Kydd is it being launched now for? November is probably the worst month here touristicallyspeaking, so let’s hope it helps those who want to go Christmas shopping and can’t drive or get a lift, and who live near a stop. Do you think the shopping trolleys clip on the back? *The unhelpful blurb just said ‘La Marina’ for stop number 3, I had to look it up to find out where the crazily named ‘La Marina’ street is anyway. Just so you know, it’s sort of in the middle of the lower Urb, one up from the lower road - sorry I mean Calle del Convenio, which runs parallel to it - look it up if you don’t believe me ! I have to say the whole thing belongs under the ‘hasn’t been thought through properly’ section, like so many things here. A bus / train service round the Urb, to include the beach in the summer for those without transport is one thing, and a good thing, to include poor old Oasis and Esquera, and – separately perhaps - a tourist bus / train to show off the sights ( the quarry’s nice in the right light ! ). Oh, and don’t forget your season ticket if you intend to travel on the train, you can save…erm…probably enough for a holiday next summer in San Fulgencio! Still, that’s only my opinion, it might not be yours! News from round the Urb is that Thomas Greens has gone now, no sign of Anthony’s, those nice people next door at the Cornish Pride are taking up some of the business, why not have a look? The big guns are gearing up for Christmas and the New Year, how about we all try to support our little shops on the Urb this Christmas? We already have a good English Butchers on phase four, but I see Mr Lamb has returned down in the village. Don’t get me started on the new Parques – where I live, it all seems to have been finished ages ago, but you can’t get into ours, there’s five feet-high fencing all round and no entrances! Well, unless you live on the far side where the fence is down, you can see people escaping into it, like a reverse-Colditz. They wander round and across the seasonally-challenged cricket pitch, only to find they can’t get out from our side and then have to retreat and break out again where they got in – you couldn’t make it up! No-one ever says anything about when, how, why it will or won’t open – does anyone know? The people who live there don’t, that’s for sure - why is that? It’s what we used to call ‘mushroom management’ years ago, I’m sure you know what that means, but just in case you didn’t…it means keep ‘em in the dark and feed ‘em on sh…fertiliser! Happy Christmas from Fouleye !

Albatera

our journey inland takes in the Romans and agriculture at the bottom of the mountains.

34

A

lbatera, in the Vega Baja region of the Costa Blanca, has a population of around 9,000 with its inhabitants speaking mostly Spanish with a touch of Catalan to be heard here and there. The site has been there for a long time - Artifacts found in the area give testimony to its being inhabited in pre-historic times and then the Romans invaded in the 3rd century BC and decided to pay the area a visit although, bless ‘em, they left a system of irrigation channels working the area. Then the Arabs thought they’d have a go in the 5th century and they kept hold of it until it was re-conquered by Alfonso the Wise (no relation to Dennis) in 1266. In 1296 Jaime II King of Aragon integrated Albatera with Cox and Crevillente into the kingdom of Aragon and granted the Moors of these 3 villages safe conduct to return to their former places of residence. The agreement of Elche 1305 set the boundaries of Castilla and Aragon as north and south of the Segura River - the southern area including Albatera and Crevillente becoming part of Aragon and with Cox going to Castilla. The Moors were finally expelled in 1609 and the language and writings of the region became exclusively Castillan and then, the hot potato that was Albatera became a part of the Alicante Province in 1833 Agriculture has always been the main source of income in the region (unless you were a sign maker I guess) and it till is the case that the economy of the area relies a fair amount of farming where the main produce nowadays is fruit (mostly lemons and dates) and vegetables. The town of Albatera has changed much in recent years but at the centre, in the plaza, is a beautiful parochial church, dedicated to the apostle Santiago and built in 1729. The church is famed for its elaborate baroque doorway, intricately carved in stone. You will also find the town hall and the old casino in the Plaza too. If nature’s your thing then you’ll enjoy Albatera as it’s surrounded by natural areas of plains, wetlands and mountains with one of the best places to go being the municipal park - Parque de la Huerta (Park of the Orchards) which consists of 30,000m2 of gardens, a lake, a fountain and a variety of marked out walking routes. Some musical events also take place here. For a good look at inland Spain, you can’t go far wrong in Albatera which still is a truly traditional Spanish town with good Spanish values. Take a trip and see for yourself….unless someone else has claimed it by then…

Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions This month Ed presented us with an early Christmas present – a “three line whip” and told us what to write about! Talk about freedom of the press! I was told to review the past year, to look back at the gadgets, software and tools that we have written about in 2009 (personally I think it’s a ploy to make sure that this article is in on time!) It’s been a great year for technology and we have seen loads of new products only to be expected in a market as fast moving as technology I guess. We have tried to keep you up to date with the software and hardware which we know, from your emails, interests you. January – http://tinyurl.com/yd79oqk We started the year by looking at how Windows Vista could be used as a media center, being the hub of your music, pictures and TV. Well Vista has now been replaced by Windows 7 and I’m pleased

July – http://tinyurl.com/y99mqr6 This was a month for new gadgets and we looked at the OWL Wireless Electricity Monitor and how it could be used to save money on your electricity bill. August – http://tinyurl.com/y86uucd August saw us looking at how secure open wireless access points (wifi zones) really are and how you can help protect yourself from others looking at your important and personal information. September – http://tinyurl.com/yaxqrco

to say that this functionality has remained and has in fact been improved on – good old Microsoft ;-)

In September we learned about Ted Talks and how you can use them to learn

October - http://tinyurl.com/ydzxjju After all the storms we talked about how you can help protect your computer

we have such violent weather.

March - http://tinyurl.com/y979pd4 In March we continued to look at more tools that are available for free download from the Internet. April – http://tinyurl.com/yedlsh6 The guys at The Jungle Drums embarrassed me by writing a load of lies about me (it was all true - ed!) and published a photo so everyone could recognise me! May – http://tinyurl.com/ycvhxng We looked at how Live Mesh could be used to share your photographs and other media easily and quickly between friends and family. June – http://tinyurl.com/y863dy4 In June we investigated reasons why your computer or laptop might be running slowly and what you could do to

more about subjects that interest you.

November – http://tinyurl.com/ydccuhf In November, we looked at the new version of AVG and the new version of the most popular operating system in the world – Windows.

Well that’s about it – another year almost at a close, doesn’t time fly! You will notice that each of the months above has a link next to it. If you use that link in your web browser it will allow you to download the article for that month in Adobe Acrobat format from the Jungle Drums website – www.thejungledrums.com Happy Christmas! I hope you all have a good one, see you next year! Richard

December already, what a strange and busy year, perhaps we should reflect on that. January, full of optimism, we complete the move to our new, fully equipped Workshop in La Hoya. “Ciclomotores” now have to comply with ITV regulations. Come February, we launch our unique, “SHINY LAMPS”, process, for the

refurbishment of dull and discoloured headlamps, this proves an instant success. By March, optimism is waning slightly, as we hear of the number of people returning, permanently, to the UK. We introduce our “Buy One Get One Free” oil change offer. April arrives with a hint of Spring, and fixed site, Speed Cameras are spotted in the area. Laws change regarding number plate sizes. WOT! In May, I discovered the wisdom of Jose and Paco and they become our “local” correspondents. Enquiries regarding repatriating cars to the UK are on the increase. June was the start of a long, hot summer. Scrapping cars, correctly, becomes a popular topic. Paco takes up painting. For July, the heat got to me and I bored everybody, by rambling on about Airbags! And fluorescent jackets! By this time Paco is considered an Artist.

The end of September was memorable, when the “Gota Fria” visited the area and caused unbelievable damage. Lots of enquiries about buying UK cars, in Spain, Potential minefield! Come October, the storms abate and repairing flood and hailstone, damaged cars keeps the workshop busy. I waffle on about Driving Licences and Medicals. Paco swops his paintbrush for a yard brush. By November, sun still shining, but hey, is that a nip in the air? Lots of ITV’s to do, and many headlamps benefiting from our “SHINY LAMPS” treatment. It was coming up to Christmas and Sammy asked his mum if he could have a new bike. She told him that the best idea would be to write to Santa Claus. But Sam, having just played a vital role in the school nativity play, said he would prefer to write to the baby Jesus. So his mum told him that would be fine. Sam went to his room and wrote, ‘Dear Jesus, I have been a very good boy and would like to have a bike for Christmas.’ But he wasn’t very happy when he read it over. So he decided to try again and this time he wrote:’Dear Jesus, I’m a good boy most of the time and would like a bike for Christmas.’ He read it back and wasn’t happy with that one either. He tried a third version: ‘Dear Jesus, I could be a good boy if I tried hard and especially if I had a new bike.’ He read that one too, but he still wasn’t satisfied. So, he decided to go out for a walk while he thought about a better approach. After a short time he passed a house with a small statue of the Virgin Mary in the front garden. He crept in, stuffed the statue under his coat, hurried home and hid it under the bed. Then he wrote this letter. ‘Dear Jesus, If you want to see your mother again, you’d better send me a new bike.’

woooooooowhoooooo

Dear Sirs, A Christmas Story When four of Santa’s elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the PreChristmas pressure. Then Mrs Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where. Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered. Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drank all the cider and hidden the liquor. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom. Just then the doorbell rang, and irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said very cheerfully, ‘Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn’t this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?’ And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

I’m in the process of renewing my passport, and still cannot believe this. How is it that Sky Television has my address and telephone number and knows that I bought a bleeding satellite dish from them back in 1977, and yet, the Government is still asking me where I was bloody born and on what date. For Christ sakes, do you guys do this by hand? My birth date you have on my pension book, and it is on all the income tax forms I’ve filed for the past 30 years. It is on my National Health card, my driving licence, my car insurance, on the last eight damn passports I’ve had, on all those stupid customs declaration forms I’ve had to fill out before being allowed off the plane over the last 30 years, and all those insufferable census forms. Would somebody please take note, once and for all, that my mother’s name is Mary Anne, my father’s name is Robert and I’d be abso-f*****g-lutely astounded if that ever changed between now and when I die!!!!!! I apologise, I’m really pissed off this morning. Between you an’ me, I’ve had enough of this bulls**t! You send the application to my house, then you ask me for my f*****g address !!!! What is going on? Do you have a gang of Neanderthal a**eholes workin’ there? Look at my damn picture. Do I look like Bin Laden? I don’t want to dig up Yasser Arafat, for s**t sakes. I just want to go and park my a**e on some sandy beach somewhere. And would someone please tell me, why would you give a s**t whether I plan on visiting a farm in the next 15 days? If I ever got the urge to do something weird to a chicken or a goat, believe you me, you’d be the last f*****g people I’d want to tell! Well, I have to go now, ‘cause I have to go to the other end of the poxy city to get another f*****g copy of my birth certificate, to the tune of £30. Would it be so complicated to have all the services in the same spot to assist in the issuance of a new passport the same day?? Nooooooooooooo, that’d be too damn easy and maybe makes sense. You’d rather have us running all over the f*****g place like chickens with our heads cut off, then have to find some a**ehole to confirm that it’s really me on the damn picture - you know, the one where we’re not allowed to smile?! (bureaucratic f******g morons) Hey, do you know why we couldn’t smile if we wanted to? Because we’re totally

p****d off! Signed An Irate Citizen. P.S. Remember what I said above about the picture and getting someone to confirm that it’s me? Well, my family has been in this country since 1776 ........ I have served in the military for something over 30 years and have had full security clearances over 25 of those years enabling me to undertake highly secretive missions all over the world. ........ However, I have to get someone ‘important’ to verify who I am - you know, someone like my doctor WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ANOTHER F*****G COUNTRY!! Sincerely, You Should Know Who.

‘Shuda wuda cuda’ is just one of the Sex And The City inspired cultural references that are set to pepper your month, especially as the ‘girls’ start to prepare for a global media blitz to promote their upcoming Sex And The City 2: The Product Placement Movie. Horses, cows and hens are all well starred apart from their manure, which is particularly badly starred especially in incidents in which it comes into contact with clothing or shoes: there’s a global open toe shoes warning in place all month.

Drumming, as in the being a drummer for a rock or punk bank sense, are superbly starred this month especially if you have innate rhythm and look acceptably aggressive with your shirt off and sweat too much for the videos.

Field ball sports are well starred especially when the balls are similar in size to a man’s head, if Mercury has anything to do with it this month. Yellow birds, green birds and black birds are all averagely starred as long as they are not seen on the same branch as blue birds, which is a bad omen in the standard Damien sense this month. An item of electronics could exhibit signs of depression - give it a friendly but firm tap to shake it out of its funk.

If it is the former then buy special writing paper and possibly a quill and bottles of dippy ink or at least a ball point pen costing more than 50c, and write beautiful consumer inspired poetry to make Saturn cry with the pride of a proud mother.

Gemini

May 22nd - June 21st Euphemisms and exclamations especially ‘Boink’, ‘Shag’, ‘Phwor!’ and ‘Oh me oh my’, are all averagely starred at low volumes, but shouted at higher volumes Mars is on side applauding from afar. Playing the bottles - that is taking a spoon and banging bottles and condiments on the dinner table - is better starred today than when you first came across this activity when you were 8. Tap carefully, my friends, and make your beautiful tappy music with care. Mysticism, especially when accompanied by wizarding hats and witchy broomsticks, are well starred as the clock strikes midnight, but before and after that you really should watch out.

Cancer

June 22nd - July 22nd Whilst it’s still a little too early to think of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and Jack Frost is busy nipping noses in other colder countries at the moment, now might be the time to start to preparing the more sweet sticky December treats. Frosted icing on cakes, especially on wedding cakes, holds out a 20% extra chance of tooth chip after the 7th. Bite slowly, friends, and maybe make the icing more malleable by licking it like a dog licks your face before crunching down.

November 23rd - December 21st

December 22nd - January 20th

Virgo

Aug 23 - Sept 21

A popular internet chat room is simply filled to bursting with strange and deceitful people, especially on the 16th of the month. Go in with a healthy skepticism and treat the experience as some kind of research project in understanding human nature. Jupiter suggests asking deep and leading questions that nobody can answer, it doesn’t really make any difference, and, if Saturn has done his job, you will at the end of it be amazed that people actually do meet up on the internet and marry, or is this another internet conspiracy?

Grudge matches with your worst enemy are well starred this month as long as your opponent is Aries or a fellow Capricorn. All other star signs are badly starred to the point of run to the hills levels of bad luck. Beware in particular falling over backwards over low hedges and particularly into busy roads, incoming heat guided missiles, buckets filled with custard, your trousers falling down unexpectedly, computers breaking unexpectedly just after you have put a really naughty wallpaper on your desktop, and people with tourette’s. Lawn mowing is particularly excitingly well starred this month, as is cutting hedges with those large scissor type thingies.

Aquarius

January 21st - February 18th

Libra

September 23rd - October 23rd Exciting moments will be interspersed with ultra ‘how about I knit some socks’ boring bits this month. Attempts to cheer yourself up after a sudden shock or birthday celebration, will be foiled if you have eaten too much birthday cake - beware pink icing in all of its forms. Ghosts, especially ones that go bump in the night, are well starred this month and may answer a question you have had about someone from your past, or not - it’s a flip of a coin chance.

Scorpio

October 24th - November 22nd Your enduring confidence that 45rpm records will one day make a comeback will be knocked once more this month, as Saturn attempts to face slap you to your senses from afar. Traffic cones, especially orange ones with white stripes, are badly starred especially if flying in through the air from the east. Refrain from putting your windscreen washers on during any cone based storm, a common driving error. Distortion when you sing into a microphone in a talent competition is not being helped by a sound engineer under the influence of Jupiter who you have wronged in some way. Take this as a life lesson to get on with the little people: Remember that sometimes the planets will help you out, sometimes you deserve a kicking, sometimes you are just singing too close to the microphone.

An Olympic inspired month on many levels. Levitation, mind control and speed eating are all highly starred this month, and Jupiter is currently pondering the merits of taking control of your stomach around the 17th. Periods of bed rest are highly starred, as are moments of stand up quarreling, especially now you can (temporarily) read your boss’s mind. Tuesday may be the best time to ask for a raise. Mercury begins a decade long trajectory through the dominant waterfall star configuration on the 6th of the month. Try to solve any whodunit type riddles by that time, as your chances of successfully solving problems like this diminishes quite remarkably from thence on.

Pisces

February 19th - March 20th Singing in harmony coupled with choreographed dance moves are well starred this month, as long as you are not on the outside position in any dance. Those on the outside run an abnormal risk of stage falls and bruises, as Jupiter becomes a critic. Worryingly homely television shows popular in the 50’s in which a woman does all the housework cheerfully are well starred until noon of the 19th. Flashes of light, strange low humming noises and possibly even close encounters of the third to fifth kind, are likely as Saturn transects a literal supernatural plain of wonderment.
