Spring arrives in the Northern Hemisphere on March 19, bringing with it visions of more hours of sunshine, warmer temperatures and ample opportunities to embrace the great outdoors.

Come mid-March, people who live in climates marked by cold winters have no doubt been anticipating spring fun in the sun for some time. Once spring arrives, the following make for some great activities.

SPORTS

Come spring, various sports fill up afternoon and weekend schedules. Whether these are professional sports or youth sports leagues, the games can be a great way to spend time outdoors in the fresh, suddenly warmer air.

Spring is a season when many berries, such as strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries, begin to ripen. Find your local pick-your-own establishment to spend a day having fun (and getting a little messy) grabbing sweet berries for salads, jams and pies.

Understanding infertilty

Welcoming a baby into the family is often the most joyous event in a coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. The prospect of welcoming a newborn child into their homes compels many people to keep working toward that goal, even when an issue like infertility unexpectedly arises.

Infertility is a common hurdle for many couples. The National Infertility Association defines infertility as a disease characterized by the failure to establish a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse or due to an impairment of a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capacity to reproduce either as an individual or with his/her partner. Infertility can occur in both men and women. The 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates one in eight couples have trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy in the United States. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine says approximately one-third of infertility cases can be attributed to the female partner and one-third to the male partner. The remaining one-third are inexplicable or caused by a combination of problems in both partners.

The Government of Canada reports that roughly 16 percent (or one in six couples) in Canada experience infertility.

This number has doubled since the 1980s.

These are some of the possible causes of infertility. â&#x20AC;˘ female age (fertility decreases after age 35) â&#x20AC;˘ problems producing eggs â&#x20AC;˘ problems in the uterus â&#x20AC;˘ hormonal imbalances

â&#x20AC;˘ having a sexually transmitted infection â&#x20AC;˘ poor sperm quality or count â&#x20AC;˘ blockages in the fallopian tubes â&#x20AC;˘ chronic illnesses, like diabetes â&#x20AC;˘ prior cancer treatments â&#x20AC;˘ being over- or underweight In some instances, infertility occurs with the first pregnancy, which is known as primary infertility. Secondary infertility in a woman happens after one or more successful pregnancies, and refers to an inability to become pregnant again.

Couples can take various steps at home to overcome infertility. â&#x20AC;˘ Time sexual intercourse better after plotting fertile times of the month. â&#x20AC;˘ Get regular exercise. â&#x20AC;˘ Eat a healthy diet. â&#x20AC;˘ Learn better ways to deal with stress, and try stress-reducing activities. â&#x20AC;˘ Drink fewer alcoholic beverages. â&#x20AC;˘ Quit smoking.

Couples also can consult with infertility specialists. The CDC says infertility can be treated with medicine, surgery, intrauterine insemination, or assisted reproductive technology.

Body image and breast cancer treatment

T

he physical changes that can result from breast cancer are well-known.

However, breast cancer also can lead to emotional changes. In fact, treatments that are designed to beat cancer can have negative effects on a woman’s body image and self-esteem.

Body image is a complex post-treatment concern for breast cancer patients and survivors, and one that may not be as widely addressed as other issues. A study titled “Body Image in Younger Breast Cancer Survivors” that was published in the journal Cancer Nursing found that body image is a

large concern and has a profound impact on aspects of cancer survivorship, particularly among young breast cancer survivors.

The American Cancer Society notes that many women experience various changes in appearance while undergoing cancer treatments. These can include anything from changes in weight (increase or decrease), hair loss, surgical removal of breasts, scarring, lack of sexual interest from fluctuating hormones, and much more. Even though health care providers are good at targeting the immediate challenges of the disease, emotional support is not always part of their post-treatment follow-up.

Mary Jane Esplen, a psycho-oncologist at the University of Toronto, says she has heard from breast cancer survivors who have

battled with body image after treatment. In various therapy sessions, Esplen has learned that some women give up swimming and wearing swimsuits, while others avoid mirrors or get dressed in the dark. Esplen advises that participating in post-treatment therapy and support groups can help women battling body image issues after breast cancer treatment.

It’s important that women undergoing breast cancer treatment recognize that many of the physical effects of treatment are temporary or can be mitigated. For example, hair loss can be traumatic, but with time hair will regrow. In the interim, women can wear fashionable wigs and head covers.

Some treatment-related changes may be permanent. A complete or partial mastec-

tomy can transform the way the breasts look or make them less sensitive to touch. Many women opt to have reconstructive surgery or use a breast prosthesis.

One change women may not anticipate is how chemotherapy can affect their hormone levels and their sexual interest or response.

Being open with a romantic partner about physical and emotional feelings can help couples effectively work together to find various work-arounds to assist with pain, dryness, trouble reaching orgasm, and other sexual issues.

Many women struggle with body image and emotional changes following breast cancer treatment. With patience and a strong support network, various issues can be addressed and possibly remediated.

How to incorporate more heart-healthy foods into your diet

Diet and heart health go hand in hand. The American Heart Association notes that a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight cardiovascular diseases, which the World Health Organization says kill more people across the globe each year than any other disease.

Men and women do not need degrees in nutrition science to create heart-healthy diets for themselves and their families. In fact, the familiar calls to “eat your fruits and vegetables” many adults recall from childhood lessons or nights around the family dinner table still bear weight today. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is a hallmark of a healthy lifestyle. And supplementing such a diet with other heart-healthy foods is a great way to reduce one’s risk for cardiovascular disease.

Fruits and vegetables The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that fruits and vegetables are healthy whether they’re fresh, frozen, canned, and/or dried. The AHA advises eating fruits and vegetables with every meal and snack, and

that may require a little creativity as you sneak them into favorite dishes.

For example, the AHA suggests replacing half the ground meat in recipes for burgers, meatloaf or meatballs with cooked chopped mushrooms. The mushrooms can be finely chopped with a knife or food processor, and then saut-ed in some olive oil until they’re soft. They can then be mixed in with the lean meat, and the meal can be cooked as it normally would. At the breakfast table, add fruit to a bowl of cereal to make for a more flavorful morning meal.

Dairy products When purchasing dairy products, the DHHS recommends sticking to fat-free or low-fat options. Replace whole milk with fat-free or 1 percent milk and buy only fat-free or low-fat cheese. When snacking, reach for fat-free or low-fat plain yogurt or cottage cheese. You can even add fruit or vegetables to such snacks to make snack time even more heart-healthy.

Proteins Healthy proteins are another way people can promote heart health with

their daily diets. When choosing proteins at the grocery store, the AHA recommends choosing chicken and fish over red meats. That’s because red meats, which include beef and lamb, have more saturated fat than chicken and fish. Saturated fats increase blood cholesterol levels and can worsen heart disease, while the unsaturated fats in fish like salmon can actually reduce the risk for cardiovascular issues like heart failure and ischemic stroke. When preparing poultry, remove the skin, as most of the saturated fat in poultry is found just beneath the skin.

Grains When buying grains, the DHHS recommends reading the ingredients list on the package before purchasing.

Make sure whole wheat or another whole grain is the first item listed in the ingredients list, and choose only those products that say 100 percent whole grain. Instead of preparing white rice as a side dish, serve brown or wild rice, quinoa or oats.

A heart-healthy diet is easy to design and just as flavorful as less healthy alternatives.

Recognize signs of heart attack in women

Many people are familiar with the image of a heart attack sufferer clutching his or her chest or feeling surprising, tingling sensations in his or her left arm. While those symptoms are common, heart attacks can produce a wide array of symptoms, and some of them may actually be much less apparent than chest pain or tingling in the left arm. That’s especially so for women.

The organization Go Red for Women, which highlights women’s heart health during the month of February, advises that many symptoms women can experience when suffering from heart disease may be overlooked or misunderstood as signs of less threatening conditions. However, jaw pain, nausea, pressure, and sweating all may be indicative of a heart attack. A failure to recognize that and act quickly could prove fatal.

The American Heart Association says that heart

disease is the foremost killer of women in the United States. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says heart disease and stroke kill 31,000 women in Canada annually. Despite those figures, many women are unaware of the threat of heart disease and its symptoms.

Heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked by a buildup of a substance called plaque in the coronary arteries. Heart attack can strike any woman, though women who deal with high stress, are overweight or are heavy smokers are at the greatest risk.

Symptoms of heart attack Symptoms of heart attack in women generally are more subtle than in men. These can include but are not limited to: • shortness of breath as though you just ran a marathon

• a feeling of a squeezing rope tied around the upper back • dizziness • lightheadedness or actual fainting • unusual fatigue • neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, or abdominal discomfort • indigestion • perspiration How heart attacks are different for women Women tend to have blockages not only in their main arteries, but in the smaller ones that supply blood to the heart,. This is a condition called coronary microvascular disease, says the Mayo Clinic, and it may be why symptoms are more vague and not as apparent in women as they are in men.

Women also can have symptoms while resting or even when asleep, and emotional stress can trigger heart attack symptoms in women.

A woman’s risk for heart disease increases if she has diabetes, has experienced mental stress or depression, smokes, has gone through menopause, has had complications during a pregnancy, has an inflammatory disease, and/or is physically inactive.

Women of all ages should take heart disease seriously and schedule a check-up with a doctor to discuss risk and heart health. Women who suspect or notice any symptoms of heart attack should not hesitate to call for help. If you suspect you are having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately; do not drive yourself.

Foods that promote healthy hair and skin Millions of people across the globe deal with conditions that affect the skin and hair. Acne is a skin and hair ailment that, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, is the most common skin condition in the United States.

But what if the foods people eat could affect the health of their hair and skin? There is evidence that they can.

• Blueberries: The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave blueberries its top ranking for antioxidant activity. The antioxidants in blueberries neutralize free radicals and protect people from premature aging, which can help the skin look younger and more vibrant.

• Eggs: Eggs are great sources of protein and biotin, which are two nutrients that may help promote hair growth.

The health and wellness information site Healthline says biotin is essential for the production of a hair protein called keratin.

• Spinach: Trade lettuce for spinach, which is rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and much more. These nutrients can be the building blocks of healthy skin and hair.

Stress affects so many people and infiltrates so many parts of daily life that it can be tempting to write it off as harmless or just a normal part of being human. But the negative effects of stress are significant, and persons who can recognize that are in a good position to find healthy ways to cope with their stress.

The American Psychological Association notes that stress can take a considerable toll on a person’s mind and body. Chronic stress, which is a constant stress experienced over a prolonged period of time, can increase the risk of hypertension, heart attack or stroke.

In addition, the APA notes that chronic stress causes the muscles in the body to be in an essentially constant state of guardedness, which can potentially contribute to tensiontype headache and migraines. And these are just two of the many ways the body is adversely affected by stress, which the APA says also has been linked to problems with the gastrointestinal system, nervous system and reproductive system.

Since stress can contribute to such unpleasant and potentially life-threatening side effects, it’s important that people from all walks of life learn to recognize the warning signs of stress. The American Institute of Stress lists the following among its 50 most common signs and symptoms of stress.

1. Frequent headaches, jaw clenching or pain 2. Gritting, grinding teeth 3. Stuttering or stammering 4. Tremors, or trembling of lips or hands 5. Neck ache, back pain and/or muscle spasms 6. Light headedness, faintness and/or dizziness 7. Ringing, buzzing or “popping sounds 8. Frequent blushing or sweating 9. Cold or sweaty hands, feet 10. Dry mouth and/or problems swallowing 11. Frequent colds, infections and/or herpes sores 12. Rashes, itching, hives, and/or “goose bumps”
