Common causes of cancer that people can control

A cancer diagnosis can be shocking. After receiving such news, many people are filled with questions such as, “How did I get this disease?” That question often has no definitive answer, though physicians may be able to work with patients to determine the various factors that contributed to their cancer diagnosis. Cancer does not discriminate. People from all walks of life are diagnosed with cancer every day. Certain contributors, such as family history of cancer, may be beyond a person’s control. But the American Cancer Society notes that people can avoid some potential cancer contributors by making healthy choices.

Alcohol Alcohol consumption can raise a person’s risk of getting cancer. Alcohol has been linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, and breast, among others. The ACS notes that regular, heavy alcohol use can damage the liver and cause inflammation and scarring that might increase a person’s risk of developing liver cancer. Women who consume a few alcoholic beverages may be increasing their risk of developing breast cancer, which the ACS believes might be a byproduct of alco-

hol’s affect on estrogen levels in the body. Evidence suggests that the ethanol found in alcohol is what increases a person’s risk of developing cancer. All alcohol beverages contain ethanol, so drinkers should not assume that one type of alcohol is safer than another. Diet and sedentary lifestyle According to the ACS, research has shown that poor diet coupled with a sedentary lifestyle can increase a person’s risk of getting cancer. In fact, the World Cancer Research Fund estimates that roughly 20 percent of all cancer diagnoses in the United States are related to body fatness, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition. Men and women who can control their weight and maintain a healthy weight throughout their lives can reduce their risk of getting cancer as well as other conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. Anyone can be diagnosed with cancer. But men and women who make healthy choices can greatly reduce their risk of getting this deadly disease.

A cancer support team can help men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer fight their disease and handle its side effects. Supportive family, friends and medical professionals can help many people cope with the emotional and physical effects of cancer.

Some therapists are specially trained to treat those diagnosed with cancer. Doctors may recommend that their patients seek help with managing the emotions that can arise after a cancer diagnosis, such as depression, anxiety and confusion.

Oncology social workers Certain counselors help individuals better understand their health care system and options concerning treatment. Questions regarding how to pay for care and if insurance can cover it can be a major source of stress for those with long-term illnesses like cancer. These specialty social workers can help patients navigate the system and learn what to expect. Support groups Groups offer support in vari-

ous ways. Simply knowing there are others out there in similar situations can help individuals feel as though they are not alone in their fight against cancer. Support groups can be as formal or informal as patients prefer. Such groups may simply be a group of friends who gather regularly to chat. However, there are some organizations designed specifically to provide support for cancer patients. Peer-led groups are facilitated by group members. Professionally-led groups are typically overseen by a trained medical professional. Groups may meet in person or be available through online social networks. Some support groups may be designed for specific people, including the relatives of people with cancer, spouses, people of certain age groups, and any combination thereof.

The desire for healthy, cleanlooking skin drives the multibillion dollar cosmetics and skincare industry. According to data from the Semi-Annual Consumer Insight Snapshot from DermStore, a leading skin care ecommerce website, 67 percent of consumers surveyed are very or extremely interested in trying products for their specific skin concerns. The top five skin concerns across the United States include aging, uneven skin tone, sensitive skin, dark circles, and sun damage. To address concerns about their skin, consumers are increasingly turning to in-spa services, such as facials, peels and fillers. A facial or body skin treatment can be a coveted gift this holiday season. However, navigating spa jargon can be tricky. Here are some popular services and what they entail.

Traditional facial A traditional facial typically begins with a cleansing of the

face using steam to open up pores. This lets impurities clear out. Depending on an individual’s skin type or concerns, a mild scrub may be used to exfoliate dead skin cells, dirt and oils. A hydrating mask or lotion will be applied to soothe skin after treatment. Chemical or fruit acid peel Chemical and fruit acid peels rely on various acids to exfoliate and peel off the outer layer of skin. The skin beneath is usually more smooth and less wrinkled. Some deep peels target the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery says that peels can be used to treat anything from acne to aging skin to scars. Alpha-hydroxy acid and lactic acid may be used in mild peels. Trichloroacetic acid, or phenol, is used for more potent chemical peels. Peels are best left to an aesthetician or dermatologist.

Men and women who recently completed successful cancer treatments can schedule 20-minute breaks during those times of day when their energy levels tend to drop off. A 20-minute nap might make for a more alert and productive rest of the day. • Ease back in. The DanaFarber Cancer Institute recommends cancer survivors do what they enjoy after treatment, but do less of it. If they are already fatigued, cancer survivors should avoid tiring themselves out, no matter how much they might have missed certain activities while they were sick. Energy levels may gradually improve, and as they do, cancer survivors can adjust their activity schedules. Many cancer survivors are still coping with fatigue even after successful treatments. Allowing time for energy levels to be restored and taking steps to prevent further fatigue can help cancer survivors overcome this often unforeseen hurdle.

Upon being diagnosed with cancer, men and women often understand they’re facing an uphill battle against the disease. But few may know what to expect after successful treatment. While the cancer might be gone, some unfortunate side effects may linger. One such side effect is fatigue. According to the DanaFarber Cancer Institute, some cancer survivors report feeling tired or worn out even after their treatment has ended. Doctors know that fatigue during treatment can be caused by a host of factors, including the therapy itself. But researchers remain uncertain regarding the cause of post-treatment fatigue. Such fatigue can be especially disheartening, as many people who just survived cancer have a renewed vigor for life and don’t want to be affected by feelings of exhaustion. Fighting fatigue after cancer treatment requires the help of a physician. But because no two patients are the same, survivors may need to figure out what works best for them as they look to overcome feelings of fatigue after successful cancer treatments. • Speak with a physician. Physicians might be able to help cancer survivors overcome their post-treatment fatigue by recommending alternatives to medications that might be compromising their energy levels. Doctors may also help patients design diets that can boost their energy levels, while recommending they avoid certain foods that might have the opposite effect. • Monitor energy levels and plan accordingly. Some cancer survivors may notice that their energy levels are high at certain points of the day and low at others. Cancer survivors can monitor these levels and plan their days so they are not especially busy when their energy levels are at their lowest. This can prevent burnout and help survivors avoid the domino effect that low energy levels can have. • Take short naps. The

Pregnancy possible after breast cancer

More women are diagnosed with breast cancer than any other cancer. For many women, one of the more frightening aspects of a breast cancer diagnosis is the potential impact the disease can have on an area of the body often associated with femininity and motherhood. Cancer.net indicates the five-year survival rate for breast cancer if the cancer is only in one breast is 95 percent. That rate dips to 85 percent if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. Even though this is great news, women may worry about the long-term implications of post-cancer life, particularly how they relate to future pregnancy plans. Early detection and improvements in treatment have markedly decreased the numbers of breast cancer-related fatalities. However, the therapies used to treat breast cancer can affect fertility and a woman’s ability to have a successful pregnancy. While pregnancy after cancer treatment is often safe for both the baby and mother, women should still educate themselves about the potential effects of breast cancer treatment with regard to pregnancy. Infertility risks and preserving fertility One of the main concerns women have

after surviving a breast cancer diagnosis is the risk of infertility. Susan G. Komen says both chemotherapy and hormone therapy can impact fertility and decrease the window of time a woman has to have children. This is a particular concern for young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Chemotherapy can damage the ovaries, while tamoxifen, a commonly used hormone therapy, can cause irregular periods or stop the menstrual cycle altogether. Both of these treatments also may bring on natural menopause earlier than usual, according to the International Breast Cancer Study Group. Young women can opt to have their unfertilized eggs or embryos frozen and stored prior to starting cancer treatment. It’s important to meet with a fertility specialist early on to discuss options. Waiting game According to the American Cancer Society, some doctors advise breast cancer survivors to wait at least two years after finishing treatment before they try to get pregnant. No research yet indicates that getting pregnant will make women more susceptible to the cancer coming back, nor will pregnancy increase the risks of birth defects or other

Changing jobs can be a difficult decision to make, especially later in one’s career. In many ways, landing a new job is more challenging than ever thanks to the technology-driven society in which people live. Information is shared faster than ever, and applying for jobs isn’t the same as it might have been as recently as a decade ago. One thing that has evolved is the resume. Although creating a powerful resume has always been a challenge, writing — or modifying one — for today’s digital world requires some insider tips. Adapting a resume as one ages and has gained experience can be advantageous. A wellcrafted resume is one way for professionals to demonstrate how their skill set is current and adaptable to today’s business climate. The following tips can help improve a resume when the time comes to move on to a new job.

1. Focus on your accomplishments Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the resume around what you achieved in each position. According to the United States Department of Labor, as of 2015 69.9 percent of mothers with children under the age of 18 were in the labor force. Women’s bodies are built different from men’s to accommodate the changes of pregnancy and childbirth. Although women may store fat differently and have less muscle mass than men, it’s still important that women include weight resistance training in their exercise routines. Lifting weights is an important part of staying fit. Yet many women do not pick up weights out of fear of bulking up and gaining weight. In a 2011 opinion poll conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 20 percent of women said they accomplished the CDC’s recommended 2.5 hours of aerobic exercise and two periods of strength training each week. Contrary to popular belief, women who weight train will not turn into the bulking behemoths of competitive weight lifting. The Women’s Heart Foundation says that high levels of estrogen make

it quite difficult for women to become overly muscular. When they strength train, rather, women’s muscles will improve in tone, endurance and strength instead of size. Resistance training provides an efficient way to build strength and burn calories. A study from researchers at the University of New Mexico found that the body will take between 15 minutes and 48 hours after exercise to return to a resting state.
