OUTDOORS Eastern Panhandle Recreational Trail The Eastern Panhandle Recreational Trail is a paved biking or walking path which runs adjacent to W.Va. 9 from Martinsburg to Charles Town. The trail has several informative markers and is available for use year round.
Morgan’s Grove Park Located in Shepherdstown, Morgan’s Grove Park is a 25-acre park open every day during daylight hours. The park features a children’s playground, professionally landscaped walking path, soccer fields, a volleyball court, a covered pavilion and kitchen, barbeque grills, playground equipment and picnic tables. Harpers Ferry hiking trails Harpers Ferry is considered to have some of the best walking and hiking paths in America. With more than 20 miles of hiking trails, the options vary from wilderness hikes, to hikes through the historic downtown and along Civil War battlefields. River Riders Whitewater Rafting or Kayaking Explore a guided raft tour of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers with a certified river guide with the River Riders Whitewater Rafting tours. Harpers Ferry Zip Line Tour You can fly high above the Shenandoah Valley on a ziip line canopy tour! During the guided tour, you’ll soar above the ground on eight zip lines from 200 to almost 800 feet in length. Additionally, you can experience several belayed ladder climbs and two suspension bridges, as well as a 25-foot free fall on the automatic hands-free safety belay. John Brown Wax Museum Located in Harpers Ferry — the site of John Brown’s historic raid — the John Brown Wax Museum vividly displays the important moments of John Brown’s life, up to and including his raid on Harpers Ferry using life size wax mannequins. Martinsburg Roundhouse The B&O Martinsburg Roundhouse is a completely preserved 1866 cast iron frame roundhouse, which was an active site in both the Civil War and the first National Labor Strike in 1877. The Martinsburg Roundhouse has been used and featured in many locally filmed historical mini series on the History Channel and AMC. Tours are available to the public on Saturdays. Antietam Battlefield The original battlefield of one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War is a national landmark located near the Eastern Panhandle. Visitors can tour the battlefield, visit Dunker Church, the National Cemetery and, during fall, the Pry House Field Hospital. Apollo Civic Theatre Called the “Miracle on East Martin Street,” the Apollo Civic Theatre opened in 1914 as a venue for live stage shows. The Apollo was converted into a movie theater from the 1940s throughout the 1970s. With more than 500 seats, the Apollo features gorgeous vaudevillian-styled architecture and is still operating as a live theater, regularly producing live stage musicals and plays throughout the year. Jefferson County Courthouse The Jefferson County Courthouse in
Charles Town was built in 1808 and is listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse was the site of two major trials in history — the trial for treason of John Brown in 1859 and the trial against unionizing coal miners in West Virginia in 1922 as a result of the Battle of Blair Mountain. The courthouse is still a functioning site for local government in Charles Town and open to the public.
Kernstown Battlefield Another Civil War battlefield, which helped turned the tide of the war, Kernstown Battlefield in Winchester, Virginia was the site of two Civil War battles, in 1862 and 1864. Visitors can tour the battlefield and surrounding farm and learn more about the family who survived both historic battles on their farm while hiding in the farmhouse cellar. Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters To experience the living quarters and daily life of one of the most famous Civil War figures, check out the Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum in Old Town Winchester, Virginia. The Gothic Revival-styled house served as Stonewall Jackson’s headquarters and living quarters from the winter of 186162. Museum of the Shenandoah Valley The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is dedicated to the art, history and culture of the Shenandoah Valley. Drive to Luray Caverns for the day A short trip across the Virginia state line will land you at any number of underground caverns to explore. Luray Caverns is just one example that allows visitors to travel underground and see amazing sights. Stalagtites and stalagmites, as well as an underground organ await those who venture into the constantly cool temperatures of the caverns. A guided tour provides answers how the caverns were formed. At Luray, an outdoor maze offers added entertainment for guests as they seek to find the hidden clues and make it back to the start.

George Washington Heritage Trail A 136-mile trip down a National Scenic Byway, the sites along the George Washington Heritage Trail can be compressed into one week or stretched out over the entire fall season. The trail is inspired by the footsteps of George Washington and features historic towns throughout the Eastern Panhandle, running into Virginia. Visit Cacapon State Park; stretch your legs at Bunker Hill Mill; and grab dinner in historic Harpers Ferry. If you have time for a drive, or long weekend, take the trail from end to end, beginning at the western point in Paw Paw, or at the eastern point in Harpers Ferry. Visit the Adam Stephen House Gen. Adam Stephen, the founder of Martinsburg, built his impressive home of native limestone in the late 1770s to early 1780s, overlooking the Tuscarora Creek. The home was given to the City of Martinsburg in 1959 and the Gen. Adam Stephen Memorial Association was formed to restore and preserve the property. Additionally, the tunnels — a network of improved caverns running beneath Martinsburg — can be accessed at the site. The Adam Stephen House and Triple Brick Museum are located at 309-313 E. Blackwater Falls Blackwater Falls State Park, nestled in the mountains of Tucker County, is named for the falls of the Blackwater River whose amber-colored waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an 8-mile long gorge. The “black” water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The falls are one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia. The state park offers more than just a photo op, though. Swimming, hiking, fishing and more can be enjoyed this season. Grave Creek Mound Archeological complex The Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex features the largest conical earthen mound in the New World, measuring at 62 feet tall with a base diameter of 240 feet. Built by the prehistoric Native Americans attributed to the Adena cultural tradition, it listed as both a National Historic Landmark and a property in the National Register of Historic Places. Construction of the mound took place in successive stages from about 250-150 B.C. All the same, the fact that it required Native American labor to transport some three million basket loads to build the 57,000 ton mound is impressive. The mound is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

Coopers Rock State Forest is a multipurpose area. The park’s main attraction is the overlook of the Cheat River Gorge. Numerous picnic sites are available for your enjoyment, and more than 50 miles of hiking and biking trails wind throughout the forest. Swimming and boating may be enjoyed at nearby Cheat Lake. In addition to the day use facilities, McCollum Camping area, open through November, is operated on a first come-first serve basis. Hunting and fishing are popular activities at the forest. A six-acre trout pond is located on the north side of the forest. It is stocked twice in October. Hunting and fishing licenses are required and all state regulations apply. Exhibition Coal Mine The Exhibition Coal Mine is the largest and most popular coal heritage destination in the region. attraction is a tour that takes visitors below ground, under the supervision of an experienced veteran coal miner. Why not visit one of West Virginia’s other small-town gems this fall? Dolly Sods Wilderness Area
Part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, this 17,371 acre wilderness area has elevations ranging from 2,500 to more than 4,700 feet. There are more than 47 miles of trails for your hiking and backpacking enjoyment. Within the Wilderness Area, you’ll find the Dolly Sods Picnic Area. This small secluded picnic spot situated atop the Allegheny Plateau provides visitors with an area to rest and relax. A picnic table, grill, and restroom are available. Petersburg Trout Hatchery

If you really want to do something adventerous, visit the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Convention and Visitors Bureau to learn about the exciting geocaching trails that are all over Berkeley County.
