When we hear the word steel, we think of everything else other than jewellery. Common metals associated with jewellery are Gold, Platinum, Silver and sometimes Titanium. Steel jewellery has relatively gained a huge exposure in the recent years with companies like QVC, Ross Simons and Italian designers using this new metal in jewellery. In this article, we will emphasize on the properties of steel. Steel is basically an alloy of carbon and iron and may be sometimes combined with other elements such as chromium, manganese and tungsten. The ratio of using the elements determines the properties of the steel produced. If the carbon ratio is increased the strength also increases. It is also part of ferrous metals.

PROPERTIES OF STEEL: 1. Conductivity: Good conductor or heat and electricity. 2. Ductility: The ability to change shape or form based on the force applied without resulting in a fracture. Steel can be moulded into different shapes and designs due to this property. 3. Durability: Ability to resist strain due to its hardness. Steel is highly resistant to tear and wear making it a long-lasting metal. 4. Lustre: Property to reect light resulting in an attractive shiny silver lustre. 5. Malleability: Closely linked with ductility, this property allows steel to lose shape under compression, allowing this metal to be compressed into sheets of various thickness which are created by rolling or hammering the metal. 6. Resistance to Rust: Depending on the addition of other elements, steel may rust. Elements such as Chromium, Molybdenum and Nickel can reduce the rust. 7. Tensile Strength: The amount of stress a metal can undergo before it loses its structural shape. Steel has a high tensile strength making it highly resistant to breakage or fracturing.

GROWING POPULARITY OF STEEL JEWELLERY Men’s jewellery has seen a growth in steel jewellery due to its unique robust appearance which differs from the top 3 metals. The steel used in making jewellery is 304L Stainless Steel with a composition of 0.03% carbon, 18 to 20% chromium and 8 to 12% nickel alongside iron and other elements. Nickel is not a recommended element due to its reaction on human skin which causes allergies.

Amazon

Being an affordable metal, which does not rust easily and is highly durable, stainless steel jewellery is a growing to be a favourite with men. Some jewellery manufacturing companies, and retail stores globally are creating customized steel jewellery. It would not be far that everyday jewellery would see an increase in the demand for steel jewellery.

PALLADIUM JEWELLERY Never heard of palladium? You’re not alone. Most folks in the market for an engagement or wedding ring don’t know what palladium is, but it’s one of our favourite metals to use for wedding jewellery for many reasons. Palladium is often compared to platinum and has customers wondering: what’s the difference between the two? Both are unique, yet similar in several ways. Let’s look at how platinum vs palladium compare in appearance, cost, durability, and comfort.Palladium is the newest precious metal. A platinum group metal, palladium is rare, lustrous, and naturally white. Palladium has the purity and white tone of platinum but is less dense, making it more affordable.

Palladium is named after Pallas Athene, the Greek Goddess of war, wisdom and crafts. It has been used in jewellery since 1939 and is becoming an increasingly popular metal choice.

Palladium has great purity and strength which prevents it from expanding when exposed to heat. It is lighter than platinum and does not tarnish; it is a metal that will look great for years to come. The beauty of palladium is very easy to maintain.

Platinum and palladium are both naturally white metals that will stay white forever. The difference in colour between palladium and platinum is very minimal. Platinum rings are generally about 1 shade whiter than palladium, but there truly is a very small difference. Unlike white gold, both platinum and palladium are not rhodium plated since they are naturally a bright white colour. This is a great feature of both metals because it means much less maintenance than a white gold ring which could develop a yellow tinge without regular re-plating. Also, because both palladium and platinum rings develop a patina finish over time, that means even less maintenance.

From the same metal family as platinum, palladium is a naturally bright white metal. However, palladium is lighter and less dense than platinum, which also means that it’s lighter on your wallet. Since palladium isn’t as heavy as platinum, you can wear elaborate palladium earrings or large palladium bracelets without feeling like a heavy weight is pulling you down.

The Palladium Fine Jewellery Collection by Lara Bohinc Ring

And just like platinum, palladium jewellery is 95% pure, which means you get more precious metal in your jewellery: White gold is only 58.5% pure. And while white gold needs rhodium plating to keep it shiny, palladium jewellery does not. In fact, palladium is often used in white gold alloys. And your palladium jewellery won’t tarnish like sterling silver. If you suffer from nickel allergies, you may have found your new favourite metal; palladium jewellery is hypoallergenic and highly unlikely to affect you. Many designers prefer working with palladium because the metal is more malleable and can be used in very fine, intricate jewellery.

Palladium wedding bands are becoming increasingly popular since most people can’t tell palladium and platinum jewellery apart, especially since a pair of palladium bands are a far more affordable option. And because palladium doesn’t weigh a lot, you can set large gemstones like rubies, diamonds, or emeralds securely and your palladium jewellery won’t tip you over. Plus, with all the money you’ll save by buying palladium, you’ll be able to afford bigger jewels. Clean your palladium earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings in warm water with a soft brush or cloth. At Gemvara, we only use recycled or responsibly mined palladium in our handcrafted palladium jewellery. Our palladium designs are made in the United States and are meant to be passed down for generations.

by oxidising the metal, jewellers can create a rich spectrum that includes bright cobalt blue or rich purple.

Titanium featured significantly in the Chopard Fleurs d’Opales collection, which was unveiled during Paris Couture Week in July. The floral-inspired Chopard rings use titanium to create incredibly thin curved petals, some heavily set with gems, to surround large, ethically sourced Australian black opals. The Fleurs d’Opales ring set with a 24.3ct opal has leaves set with amethysts and purple sapphires, and the titanium used to set the stones has been oxidised to turn it purple so that the blanket of gems appears to be invisibly set. The ring set with a 20ct opal uses unset blued titanium petals to create a mesmerising backdrop for the opal, with Chopard describing titanium as “taking on its full dimension when appearing alone”.

Swiss jeweller Suzanne Syz works extensively with titanium which, due to its hardness, makes it a difďŹ cult material to master. She has used it in both its raw and coloured form to create purple, blue and green hues, often making the metal the star of the design. Syz also uses titanium in hidden ways that bring innovative tactile elements to her designs. She will string tiny pearls onto titanium wires, which are exible enough to be squeezed, yet will always spring back into their, often quite large, original shapes. According to British jewellery designer Glenn Spiro, while titanium can make wearing statement jewellery less cumbersome, it also offers benefits for more delicate jewels

Colour and Colour Variations Titanium is naturally a grey-silvery metal, but has the ability to be anodized in several colours as well as black diamond treated for a glossy durable black look. Durability Titanium is very resistant to bending, cracking and has good scratch resistance. Stone settings in titanium resist loosening very well. Titanium’s high strength allows innovative and more delicate stone setting than traditional softer jewellery metals. Weight Titanium is very light weight. Its light weight may even surprise some people. It has been described to “feel is if it is not even there”. Bio-compatibility Titanium, even in its higher strength alloy form known as “aircraftgrade titanium” is perfectly biocompatible. Aircraft-grade titanium is commonly used for surgical implants and dental fittings than pure titanium, as it is more resistant. Titanium is the only known “foreign” material that living tissue will attach onto.

such as engagement rings. Spiro recently used the metal to create a bridal collection entitled I Do, which is exclusive to Harrods. The diamond engagement rings are classically styled yet use unorthodox titanium to offer durability and strength, with some truly alternative choices in shades of bright blue, cognac and pink. “It is completely different to gold,” says Spiro, who also uses titanium in his main collections. “This metal allows us to create much more finer jewellery pieces, as the stones can be far more intricately set.” While the metal is not considered to be

precious, the prices for Spiro’s titanium jewellery are substantial. When asked whether this is ever an issue for customers, Spiro answers: “In truth, the value of gold compared to the value of a true gemstone is somewhat insignificant.” If we take this theory to heart, then titanium offers some alluring benefits for fine jewellery shoppers not afraid to forego a hallmark. Tungsten rings are very attractive and considered to be showstoppers because of their shine. Many are choosing them over other precious metal rings because of their economical cost and their ability to retain their lustre. Tungsten rings are 10 times harder than gold, 4 times harder than titanium and the most scratch resistant of metals. They are considered one of the most popular rings in the world today because they provide style, toughness and comfort to last a long time. When compared to some popular metals such as gold and silver, tungsten rings can retain their lustre without having to perform regular polishing. They come in different shades and shapes to satisfy a variety of different styles. You can choose a sleek tungsten band or a diamond tungsten ring. The neat part is that you can make them more personal by engraving them. Many tungsten rings come with a central band that is of different colour. Some have interesting designs in different colours such as red and black. Others will include a precious stone or even diamonds. The engagement rings are more likely to have diamonds on them. With any style you decide, its important to receive a warranty. A lifetime warranty of the ring is usually good sign of the quality. The best ones should usually come with a lifetime warranty. Tungsten carbide rings have more simple styles that have at and dome shapes in various finishes. They are made in different sizes to accommodate both men and women. tungsten rings, they are symbolic because there are meanings behind the unique symbols on the ring. The symbols on the ring can represent different meanings such as love, family and religion. You also have tungsten rings with unique inlays which are ideal for who people that like to wear eye catching jewellery. Tungsten is a material that when translated in Swedish means “heavy stone. Tungsten carbide is a metal that has become very popular for making wedding bands. Carbide beveled rings are made of durable material that is secondary to diamonds. They are known for being extremely scratch resistant and strong. They require very little maintenance compared to other jewellery of similar type. This is because they do not get the wear and tear from everyday wear as some other rings. The shine of tungsten wedding bands lasts for a long time. At the same time, they are tough against chemicals that could damage lesser quality metal rings. Many men that work physical labour jobs prefer tungsten rings because of their ability to take punishment. There are certain couples that choose tungsten carbide rings to symbolize their marriage because tungsten metal is considered almost unbreakable. They have an elegance that is very difficult to match. The prices are quite affordable for the value you are receiving. If you are in the market for wedding bands, you really need to consider tungsten rings.

METALS

Choices for metal in your jewellery collection go far beyond the usual.

A luxurious sofa looks out of place on a threadbare carpet. A burger is just a salad and some meat without the bun to hold everything together. And a database is a confusing mess of information without software to give it structure. In much the same way, the metal in a piece of jewellery provides an elegant base, holds gemstones in place and creates structure that makes the whole design work. In fact, the metal has a special beauty all its own. And, in many designs, metal is the only element in the jewellery. Metals used in fine jewellery typically are called precious metals. Historically, they comprise platinum, gold and silver. Today, fine jewellery is also made of sterling silver, cobalt, palladium, titanium, tungsten carbide (titanium and tungsten carbide are more likely used in men’s jewellery) and even space-age ceramic. With all these options available, making a choice can get a little complicated. Here’s a quick guide to the pros and cons of each metal.

This naturally white metal has a lustrous appearance.

PROS: Platinum’s rarity, purity and strength make it popular for jewellery, symbolizing pure and everlasting love. Platinum doesn’t expand when exposed to heat, never tarnishes and is hypoallergenic, so it’s a good choice for those with sensitive skin or a nickel allergy.

CONS: Despite their strength, platinum rings will develop a patina over time, though a trip to the jeweler for polishing will return the original shine. It’s a dense, heavy metal so it’s most popular in rings and smaller-scale pendants and earrings for women.

Yellow gold APPEARANCE:

Gold is naturally yellow. In its purest form (24 karat), it’s too soft for everyday use in jewellery so it’s alloyed with other metals that increase its strength and alter its color. Gold is available in 18K, 14K and 10K, with the higher numbers indicating more pure gold and fewer alloys. As used in jewellery, yellow gold is typically pure gold mixed with silver and copper.

PROS: It resists tarnish and corrosion and is strong, yet malleable enough to be used in intricate jewellery designs.

CONS: Gold can scratch (the scratches can be polished away, though you lose minute amounts of the metal with each polishing). Its volatile pricing in the commodities market means frequent and significant shifts in value, which affects retail prices and the amount for which you should insure gold jewellery.

Rose and green gold APPEARANCE:

White gold APPEARANCE:

Bright, shiny white. White gold is mixed with palladium and silver or nickel, copper and zinc to attain its color. It’s usually plated with rhodium, making it safe to wear for those with a nickel allergy.

PROS:

Not surprisingly, rose gold is a warm pink and green gold is a mellow greenish yellow. Golds known as pink, rose and red are yellow gold mixed with copper and silver; green gold is yellow gold mixed with silver.

PROS: As with the other colors, rose and green gold won’t tarnish and can be made into beautiful jewellery.

CONS: It can scratch, which can be polished out.

Resists tarnish, is strong but still pliable enough to be used in detailed jewellery designs.

CONS: The rhodium plating can wear off over time. Jewellery can be re-plated.

Sterling silver

APPEARANCE: This white metal is a grayer white than platinum but is still beautiful.

PROS: Pure silver is too soft for everyday wear so it’s alloyed with copper or other metal for added strength. Sterling silver jewellery is typically 92.5% pure silver and is often marked “925,” which means 925 parts per thousand are silver. It’s an affordable jewellery metal.

Similar to sterling silver.

PROS: It contains chromium, which resists oxidation. It also resists rust and corrosion and is an affordable jewellery metal.

CONS: It’s fairly new to the jewellery scene and is still associated mostly with cutlery and flatware, though that perception is changing.

CONS: It scratches and tarnishes easily, which often plays into the jewellery design, with recessed areas allowed to darken as an accent. However, sterling silver jewellery still should be stored in tarnish-resistant cloth bags in a jewellery box.

Palladium APPEARANCE:

Cobalt

APPEARANCE: This naturally white alloy is considered a modern alternative to platinum and white gold.

PROS: Because it’s so tough, cobalt is used often for men’s rings. It’s also hypoallergenic and resistant to corrosion and wear.

This naturally white metal has a lustrous sheen and is part of the platinum family of precious metals.

PROS: Like platinum, its purity and strength make it an option for jewellery. Also like platinum, it doesn’t expand when exposed to heat, never tarnishes and is hypoallergenic. It’s lighter than platinum.

CONS: As a fairly new jewellery metal, it hasn’t yet developed the history and romance of its sister metal, platinum.

CONS: As a fairly new jewellery metal, cobalt hasn’t yet developed the history and romance associated with platinum, gold and silver. Cobalt rings can only be resized slightly, up to ½ size. Glamira

Tungsten Carbide APPEARANCE:

This strong metal of 80% tungsten and 20% carbon is gray or white.

PROS: Banggood

Titanium

In addition to its extreme strength (four times harder than titanium and very dense), tungsten carbide is hypoallergenic and scratch resistant so it’s ideally suited to people with active lifestyles.

APPEARANCE:

CONS:

Black, gray or silver, titanium is used mostly for rings in the jewellery world.

Although scratch resistant, tungsten rings can still be marred. Eliminating the scratches requires special attention because of its strength. It can’t be resized or engraved, and is brittle and may shatter under enough pressure. And like the other newer jewellery metals, it hasn’t yet developed the history and romance of platinum, gold and silver.

PROS: Titanium doesn’t include alloys, is hypoallergenic and has a very high strength-to-weight ratio so it’s durable and comfortable to wear.

CONS: Titanium rings cannot be resized, engraved or soldered, so it can’t be set with stones. Heat used in the manufacturing process can damage the metal.

Silver When you’re talking about jewellery, you’re talking about sterling silver. That just means it’s 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper. Sterling silver is a great option because it’s durable and long lasting, so it’s good for rings, necklaces, bracelets, cuff links, belt buckles, body jewellery... you get the picture. But keep in mind that silver jewellery is softer than gold, platinum and titanium, and it’s likely to tarnish without proper care.

Silver-filled

Gold

Silver-filled metals (AKA “silver overlay”) are another popular choice. The difference is that silver-filled wire is made by using heat and pressure to apply a layer of silver to a base of a cheaper metal.

Gold jewellery is a mix of gold and other metals, such as silver, copper, nickel and zinc. When you’re talking about the actual gold content, it’s measured in Karats (K) or carats (ct). That just describes the proportion of pure gold to the other metals in the material. The higher the proportion of gold in the final metal, of course, the more $$$ you’ll have to thrown down for it.

This silver layer is seriously hundreds of times thicker than a standard plating. Because it’s so thick, it lets you work deeper, polish more and even do some light engraving without exposing the base metal underneath. Silver-filled makes sense for jewellery components like ear wire and chains. It keeps them affordable, plus they’ll last forever and look spot on when paired with sterling silver pendants.

The maximum gold content is 24K, which would make for terrible jewellery because 24K gold is soft and malleable. Look at 14K gold for jewellery — it’s strong and easy to work with. Or, if you’re feeling spendier, try 18K gold (75 percent pure gold). Pure gold is yellow in colour and, since you won’t be buying that, it’s the non-gold metals used in the alloy that ultimately determine the colour of this metal.

• Yellow gold is the alloy o copper or zinc.

• White gold is the alloy of pu such as nickel, silver and more grayish in colour and to give it a whiter look. Ni today since so many people

Platinum

Titanium

Platinum is the rarest and most expensive of the metals. But the price is justified since it’s super durable and will never tarnish. Pure platinum melts at 3,216.2 degrees Fahrenheit, so unless you’re, you know, literally spending time on the sun, it’ll work great for things like wedding bands and cuffs.

It doesn’t get stronger than titanium. It’s the hardest natural metal known to man, putting steel, gold, silver and platinum to shame. Plus It’s scratchresistant, lightweight and easy to colour.

Appearance is everything, so platinum is often alloyed with copper and cobalt to give it a different look. Plus pairing it with other metals makes it even more durable. If you’re looking for other “platinum group” metals, check out ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium and iridium.

Titanium is even completely hypoallergenic, which makes it popular for body-piercing jewellery and even surgical implants. Just don’t use this wonder-metal for making rings — your fingers change size over time (weird, right?), and titanium isn’t solderable or resizable. Courtesy: Blue Print

I would like to think that 2020 could be the beginning of a new age of pearl, revitalizing its demand in a big way. If the 1920s was the decade of long pearl torsades and tassels (everyone in the ’20s was a flapper, in my mind), then this new ’20s can maybe mirror that popularity, in its own way and with a modern vibe. We’re already seeing celebrity pearl engagements—could that be just the beginning of a new era of bridal trends? Some jewelers would literally clutch their pearls at the thought of such a delicate gem being at the center of an everyday ring—rightfully, caution is a necessity—but I find it riveting nonetheless.

You want to go romantic but not too over-the-top for Valentine’s Day. Here are some romantic ideas for jewellery gifts, but hold the hearts. Sure, you’re a romantic person, and you want to make a great Valentine’s Day gift for your special someone. However, hearts just aren’t her thing, for one reason or another. Maybe the hearts are just a little too traditional, the tastes of your honey skew a little bit more minimal, maybe you’ve already done something about the hearts and want to branch out a bit.

More han just hearts If the object of your affection is a man and you want to give him some love on Valentine’s Day, never be afraid, for every type of man, there are romantic gifts abundant — from the typical type of business to the man wearing jeans seven days a week. Valentine’s Gift for a Person on Day! Whatever your heart-free dilemma is, underneath you’ll find a solution — a romantic Valentine’s Day gift that’s ideal for your gal or guy — hold your hearts. Let’s face it, no-one ever tells diamonds “no.” If you want to impress her on Valentine’s Day, diamonds are a great way to do it, and they’re not always expensive either. Imagine a delicate chain with one or more small drops of diamonds — a timeless gift that can be worn from a business suit to a T-shirt with almost any outfit. The classic gift is a diamond tennis bracelet and they also come in a wide variety of carat weights and prices. If you’re married and have been adding a few years to her wardrobe, consider a diamond ring in a different style from her wedding jewellery Something that brings a little spice to her look and life. Note, no matter what type of diamond jewellery you pick, it’s sure to be one of the most romantic gifts she’s ever received. If you like the idea of giving her a fine jewellery gift, there’s plenty to choose from — in each category. Fine jewellery (as opposed to trendy jewellery) is made of precious metals like gold or platinum and often has diamonds and/or gemstones. Natural or grown pearls are a beautiful gift for fine jewellery, and there should be no woman’s jewellery collection without a classic string of pearls. In other parts too, consider pearls such as delicate drop earrings, a necklace or a pin. Any 18 K, 14 K or 10 K gold jewellery makes a beautifully romantic gift of fine jewellery. You may want to choose a lovely gold chain (with or without a charm), a gold bangle necklace, or fine gold earrings — a simple design would make it easy for her to wear it with lots of outfits.

You might want to think about getting her a dressy watch in that situation — one for evening wear. Such a watch — delicate, graceful and possibly decorated with diamonds or other gemstones — is the type of watch she may not ever buy for herself, but one she’ll be happy to have once you give it to her!

A good watch is an incredibly romantic gift. She can wear it as often as every day and she will think of you when she looks at it. Each woman in her jewellery collection should have a few watches to choose from. If she is the more athletic type in general, she may already have a casual watch or one she uses for sports.

If she already has a night watch or a dresser she wears to work, a sporty or trendy watch might be a great choice. Pay attention to her lifestyle on the weekend, and choose a watch that blends in. Fashion watches are a fun alternative she’ll love to wear in bright colours. And if she wants something unique and personal, choose a Michele ® watch that you customize by choosing the strap or bracelet and the case of the watch separately; and then bring them together by your jeweller. Something with Valentine’s-red gemstones will do the trick nicely for a romantic jewellery gift that does not feature hearts. Many people look amazing in red, and in this lovely colour of love, you will find the garnet and ruby jewellery. A right-hand ring of ruby or garnet is a present that she can wear whenever she has a The look needs red-eye, while a nice set of red gemstone drop earrings or a chic bangle embedded in red stone are fashionable and romantic choices. Nerves are normal As it’s such a big milestone in everyone’s life, it’s understandable that asking someone to marry you may feel a little daunting, so being nervous is normal.

Look for clues If you need extra inspiration when selecting the perfect ring or deciding how best to propose, you can pick up clues from your intended’s social media feeds, magazines left open, or comments they make on other people’s engagements. Do ask their friends for help, too. They can provide valuable insight into your beloved’s likes and dislikes, as long as they can be trusted to keep a secret.

Be on trend Current jewellery trends are great for inspiration too, especially if your other half is a follower of fashion. Halo settings, solitaire diamonds and cocktail rings are all popular choices, which can all be selected according to personal style. If your future partner is a little more adventurous you may want to consider alternative metal colours, mixed diamond shapes, or a ring that could be stacked in the future.

Cherish the engagement ring It can be tempting to hide the ring in order for your loved one to find it at a given moment. Think carefully about this. Not only can hiding a ring in food or a drink raise certain safety concerns; getting the ring dirty will reduce the brilliance of its diamonds. There’s also a chance that the ring may get lost if it’s hidden somewhere unexpected that is known only to you.

Enjoy the moment As much as possible, when it comes to the day of your proposal try and relax and enjoy the moment. Try not to build up expectations about your loved one’s reactions to your Valentine’s Day proposal and don’t worry if either of you sheds a tear, it’s an emotional and significant moment for you both.

The Forever proposal

Although your proposal may be one of the most important days in your life, the meaning behind your proposal is what is most important. It’s a declaration of your love, a symbol of your commitment and a promise of your future and your Forever. Courtesy:www.forevermark.com
