This time of year, for me, is all about savouring the warmth and the memories of summer. It’s when we pick the last of the berries and fruit from our farm, can them with love and of course sugar, and fill our kitchen with the scent of homemade pies. That’s exactly what this box’s theme is, a love letter to those nostalgic, joy-filled moments spent in the kitchen with your favourite people. The mixing bowls are out, there’s flour on the counter, fruit-stained aprons are on, music is playing, and laughter is echoing through the house.

RECIPE
GARDINER’S APPLE CRISP
I’m so excited to share a special family recipe from our very own Shauna Gardiner this season! Shauna is our incredible Senior Designer here at The Jilly Box, you’ve probably seen her pop up in some of our content. She’s been a part of our team for over four years, and we absolutely adore her. Take it away, Shauna!
“My mom, Shelley, has been making this apple crisp for as long as I can remember… As a kid, I was always sneaking bites of the crumble straight from the bowl… heck, I still do. It’s become quite famous in the Gardiner family - so much so that people request it for their birthdays instead of cake. It’s one of those recipes that’s almost suspiciously simple. Like, it’s so good, you’d think we were keeping some secret ingredient to ourselves, but nope. Sometimes the basic recipes just work. And before you go pulling out your fancy mixers and gadgets, don’t bother. As my mom always says: “Your hands are the best tool - we don’t use any of that fancy sh*t in this house.”
INGREDIENTS DIRECTIONS
For the topping:
6 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith)
2 tsp cinnamon
¾ cup brown sugar
3 tbs butter (melted)
2 tsp vanilla
For the filling:
1 cup oats
½ cup butter
1 cup flour
¾ cup brown sugar
1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F
2. Peel and chop your apples into 1-2 inch chunks. Add those to a medium-sized mixing bowl. Then add in your cinnamon, brown sugar, butter and vanilla. Give them a good mix so everything is evenly coated.
3. Pour that mixture into your baking dish. (And make sure to eat any apples that fell on the floor!)
4. Using the same bowl (don’t clean your bowl, that leftover goodness we’ll use in the crisp), add in your butter, oats, flour and brown sugar.
5. Using your hands, mix the ingredients around to make a crumble. If you don’t want to use your hands, you can use a fork or pastry blender. Note: if it feels dry add a bit more butter, we want it to be moist, that’s what gives it a nice crispy top!
6. Once your crumble is starting to feel well mixed and lumpy, add it to your baking dish, spreading evenly over the apples.
7. Bake for 45 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
8. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!

Chickpeace Zero Waste Refillery
One of my favourite parts about curating each Jilly Box is the opportunity to work with passionate, purpose-driven businesses that are doing incredible things for their communities and our planet. This season, I wanted to shine a light on someone who truly inspires me, Allisha, the founder of Chickpeace, a zero waste refillery based right here in Kelowna.
Let’s jump into our chat…
For those folks just getting introduced to Chickpeace, can you tell us a bit about your brand?
Chickpeace is a zero waste refill store on a mission to make plastic-free living accessible and affordable to all. We provide refill and eco-friendly options for personal care, cleaning and pantry products. We aim to support Canadian, women-owned brands as much as we can. We have a brick-and-mortar refill store in Kelowna, BC and an ecommerce store that services customers across Canada. We are also B Corp certified and very passionate about using our business as a force for good. In our back of house we have built out a community kitchen that supports small scale food producers and we also have a compost collection program where individuals can bring in their compost for a small fee.
What inspired you to start Chickpeace?
In my 20’s I travelled extensively around the world and after seeing the copious amount of plastic in Asia I knew I needed to be part of the solution. I came to Kelowna to pursue a master’s degree focusing on sustainability. When life aligned to start my own business, I knew I wanted to create a meaningful impact
in our community. The idea for Chickpeace was to be a sustainability hub where customers could come and purchase plastic-free, ethically sourced products that were good for both our internal and external environments. I also wanted to create an inclusive space for the community to gather for knowledge-sharing experiences like workshops and community conversations.
What does it mean to be a zero waste refillery? And, how does it work?
A refillery is a space that you can come to refill containers rather than purchasing new ones each time. Bring in any container and we will refill it based on your price and quantity preference. We want customers to understand that buying without packaging is not only kinder to the planet but also to your wallet as well. Aside from refilling containers we also strive to reduce waste in other areas. Our compost program fills a gap in our community, allowing customers to divert their organic waste. We also offer a community jar collection program where jars destined for the waste stream are donated to Chickpeace and repurposed as free containers for refills.

When you found out your Everything Bagel Topper was going to be in The Jilly Box, what was your reaction?
Truthfully, I couldn’t believe it. I’ve fangirled over Jillian Harris since I became an entrepreneur. She is someone I have always looked up to and admired. To learn that Chickpeace’s Everything Bagel Topper was to be included in The Fall 2025 Jilly Box was wild, exciting, and scary all at the same time. As with all things that are meant to be, it all fell into place seamlessly. This opportunity is a dream come true, and I will forever be grateful for it. To build a business and have it recognized by The Jilly Box is an incredible achievement and I am so proud of my team and myself for all our efforts over the last five years that landed us here.
How do you recommend using the Everything Bagel Topper?
There are so many ways to use this product! If you are a baker this is the perfect topping for sourdough loaves or bagels. You could also sprinkle it onto cream cheese, eggs, avocado toast or on a juicy tomato sandwich.
What’s next for Chickpeace after appearing in this season’s Jilly Box?
After completing this project, anything is possible. This fall, we are partnering with a local organization to run a sustainability workshop for small businesses in our community. We are also hoping to grow our wholesale lineup of products and increase our stockists. We want more folks to learn about Chickpeace and the many ways we can support their sustainability journey. We will continue to empower and educate our community to make sustainable choices for the planet by choosing refillable and ecofriendly options wherever they can.
Welcome Fall into Your Home
As wild as it sounds, fall is just around the corner and even though the beginning of September is technically still summer it always feels like that’s the start of a new season for me. I think it has something to do with the kids heading back to school and really getting back into our routine at home.
An easy way to transition your home to fall is by doing a seasonal refresh. Here are a few of my favourite ways to cozy up and reset this time of year. Just little moments that make everything feel new again.
Scent the Season
One of the most powerful ways to set your space up for fall is with scent. I always reach for warm, comforting blends. Think sweet citrus, honey clementine, or something earthy and woodsy. Lean Into Layers + Textures
Swapping out your light summery linens for more layered textures is such an easy (and fun!) way to set the tone for fall. A Fresh Start Ditching Toxins, One Room at

Over the past few years, I’ve been on a bit of a journey to reduce the toxins in our home. That doesn’t mean an overnight overhaul, it’s all about making thoughtful swaps, one little change at a time. Whether it’s cleaning products, pantry staples, or how we store and scent our spaces, there are so many ways to make your home toxin-free from the inside out.
Start with the Essentials
One of the easiest and most impactful places to start is with your cleaning supplies. Look at what you’re using to wash your counters, wash your dishes, and do your laundry. A few years ago, I actually realized that the fresh lemon scent I loved in a certain spray was actually filled with synthetic fragrances and chemicals I didn’t want around my kids or in the air we breathe. That’s why I love bringing you clean products from brands like Mint Cleaning and Nature Bee. They smell amazing and work just as well as conventional cleaners—so there’s really no reason to stick with toxic ones.
