their loss. Our only comfort is knowing that they were together to the very end.”

Rabbi Avremi Kievman, of Chabad Lubavitch, described the Marcos’ passing as a “terrible loss” to the community.

Rabbi Kievman said he had known the couple for 30 years and recalled they ran a catering business serving the community at weddings and barmitzvahs.

He said: “They were a very friendly couple, they were very kind and generous people. They were very dedicated and devoted grandparents, even more so than usual. They were a quiet and humble couple.”

Rabbi Kieveman added: “It is a terrible loss that will leave a mark in the whole community.”

Merseyside Police attended the scene with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services, on Queens Drive, between North Mossley Hill Road and Dovedale Road, after reports of a concern for a man and woman inside a black Mercedes car at around 9.20pm.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton said: “We are at the early stages of an ongoing investigation on Queens Drive to establish the circumstances of this tragic incident. Road closures remain in the area as we continue with this investigation and motorists are advised to avoid the road.

“We are continuing to appeal to anyone who saw the accident, or who stopped to try help or anyone who had any dashcam footage from their car to come forward as soon as possible. Similarly, if you live in the area and have any doorbell or CCTV footage from last night please share this

with us.”

A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said on Monday: “This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with those involved and their families. Council officers from highways and City Watch supported the emergency services in responding. The road is expected to remain closed for some time while an investigation takes place, and motorists are asked to continue to avoid the area.”

Rebecca Wilson told the Liverpool Echo that it seemed like a “waterfall” was coming down from the side of the bridge. “It looked like a burst dam, it must have been 15ft high right at the bottom of the dip,” she said.

Residents in the area told news outlets there had been flooding previously. Amateur footage illustrates water gushing on to the road which dips under a bridge.

Met Office data shows heavy rain at over 32mm (1.25 inches) an hour nearby. A spokesman for United Utilities said the incident was not due to a burst pipe.

Liverpool’s deputy Lord Mayor Richard Kemp confirmed he raised concerns about flooding for 20 years. In a letter to the council, Kemp said short-term measures included flushing out drains, but it was not enough.

“The major problem is that the core of the drainage system is more than 150 years old and is clearly inadequate,” Kemp explained.

Kemp called for better drainage, lighting and electric warning system for drivers.

Teferi scoops silver in Budapest

Israel has won an historic marathon medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last Sunday.

Maru Teferi secured silver in the men’s marathon in a time of 2:09:12 behind Uganda’s Victor Kiplangat. Ethiopia’s Leul Gebresilase finished in third place.

In an exciting race Teferi was in the leading pack throughout and took his opportunity when Gebresilase tired late on in the race to the line.

He said: “I’m so excited and happy to represent my country on such a big stage and bring honor to myself, my country, and my family. I decided to go all out for it. I saw that he (Gebresilase) was weakening in the last kilometer, I thought of catching up to him, and in the end, I overtook him.”

Teferi’s previous best finish was 11thplace in Oregon last year.

Teferi’s silver was Israel’s sole medal. Lonah Chemtai Salpeter agonisingly missed out when she finished fourth in the women’s marathon. She finished third in Oregon.

Only two other Israelis have won a medal at the championships.

Alex Averbukh won a bronze medal in pole vault in Seville in 1999 and a silver medal two years later in Edmonton.

Rabbi arrested over dating app scandal

A disgraced Jerusalem rabbi has been remanded in custody suspected of engaging in inappropriate relations by using a false identity on a dating apps.

Eighteen women have filed complaints with police against Rabbi Yosef Mordechai Pariser, who is married with two children. A number of women are anticipated to provide testimonies. Additional complaints are expected.

Police arrested Pariser last Wednesday. Pariser allegedly used an online alias, Jake Segal, a secular single man. He claimed to women he was a dog trainer.

Police were alerted after a victim invited Pariser to her home where complainants confronted him over his actions.

Judge Mordechai Borstein reportedly said at Jerusalem’s Magistrate’s Court on Monday: “Since the previous hearing, reasonable

suspicion against the defendant regarding his offenses has been reinforced. The investigation is progressing, and many complainants have provided their testimonies, it is expected that additional complainants will do so as well.”

Borstein added: “There is a legal question concerning the nature of the fraud and the suspect’s purpose in his actions. Based on the evidence, for instance, at the very least, there is reasonable suspicion of fraudulently starting inappropriate relations, as according to the complainants, they wouldn’t have been with the defendant if they’d known his true circumstance,” he added. “Given the nature of the offences, concerns of obstruction of justice and the complexity of the investigation’s actions, the defendant’s arrest will be remanded.”

Police stated “significant developments” had occurred since the suspect’s first remand.

“The reasonable suspicion against him has been significantly reinforced due to the increasing number of victims,” a spokesman reportedly noted. They added: “Since the case was made public, the investigating unit has received numerous complaints from across the country, indicating that the suspect had the same modus operandi. The suspect is still considered a danger to public safety due to the nature and frequency of these offences.

Pariser’s lawyer, confirmed that Pariser “cooperated” with police and explained he lives in “parallel worlds”. The lawyer reportedly noted. “What we’re

considering is more ethical than criminal. The defendant admitted his actions to his wife.”

A complainant from Jerusalem told the court she had been in a relationship with Pariser for seven months. She recalled: “He created a false image of a normative person. He said we’d get married and emphasised faithfulness was really important to him.”

Another complainant from Jerusalem, had been in a relationship with Pariser for five months. She recalled: “After three months, my doubts began to rise. He never stayed over on Saturdays, and he always had an excuse.”

Waterstones remove Mein Kampf from website after CAA appeal

CAA have welcomed Waterstones removing from sale a deluxe edition of the controversial book Mein Kampf on its website.

CAA called on the bookseller to act after the listing appeared. The controversial title is the manifesto of Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler. Waterstones explained to CAA that it receives titles through an automated feed from Nielsen. Both analyse books, but the catalogue reaches millions of titles so publications escape filters.

A CAA spokesperson said: “We commend Waterstones. Such vile antisemitic rhetoric has no place on the virtual shelves of a major retailer, let alone being marketed as a superior collector's item. With websites relying more and more on automations, it falls to groups like ours to ensure that online filters work and that sellers are held to account. To its credit, Waterstones has repeatedly taken antisemitism seriously and removed racist propaganda from sale.”

Waterstones noted: “This listing has now been removed from our database and the title will not be available to purchase via our website or our bookshops. Thank you for highlighting this issue.”

WH Smith apologised and removed from sale Mein Kampf and The Protocols of the

Elders of Zion at stores in 2020. The booksellers had been offering various editions. This was the third time WH Smith had been caught selling Mein Kampf, the book was found on sale in Jordan and Singapore.

In related news, CAA are writing to Walk This Way Surplus, a Coldstream militaria shop, over the sale of Nazi memorabilia.

Items online included Nazi party triangle pennants and Third Reich knives. It is understood the on-site shop, included a bronze Hitler bust, German merit cross with swastika, SS helmet and SS pin.

CAA also wrote to Richard Winterton Auctioneers Ltd over the sale of Nazi related items at a militaria auction in Tamworth this week. The auction featured Third Reich daggers, bayonets, swastika badges, swastika and eagle decorations for caps, uniform patches, a belt buckle, and letter from infamous Nazi Heinrich Himmler.

CAA understands a member of the Jewish community withdrew listings.

A spokesperson expressed solidarity with the Jewish community, noting: “The sale of Nazi memorabilia is always repugnant, but here it is in the starkest relief. Such sales are an affront to those who died fighting the Nazis and those who were murdered at their hands. We shall be writing to the auction house.”

Jewish culture

An annual Jewish culture festival is taking place in Warsaw this week.

Named after Nobel Prize-winning Polish-Jewish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, the weeklong event including music concerts, films, exhibitions and food workshops ends Sunday. Highlights include a cantorial concert at Nożyk Synagogue, featuring performers including Israel Nachman and Chaim Stern. There are also debates, children activities, meetings with writers, artists and historians, and plays performed by Warsaw’s Jewish Theatre.

Earlier this month, CAA wrote to Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood urging them to withdraw Nazi memorabilia from an auction this week due to the “hurt and disgust” caused by the sale of such items.

The collector sale listed items including Third Reich daggers and a metal swastika pin. The auction also featured swastika and eagle armbands, swords, a bronze Gothe medal and belt buckle from the Nazi era.

Earlier this year, CAA acted against the Emporium and Canterbury Auction Galleries over the sale of Third Reich items.

Last year they called on Charles Hanson, who appears on BBC’s Bargain Hunt, to apologise and remove Nazi memorabilia at his auction house.

Fellow BBC Bargain Hunt expert Tim Weeks apologised after it was revealed, following CAA intervention, that Nazi memorabilia was due to be sold at his auction house.

Festival founder and artistic director Gołda Tencer said the event connects “tradition and modernity”.

The festival is held across the city including the site of Warsaw’s Jewish community. In other European news, Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff presented a 100,000 Euro grant for Jewish cultural days in Magdeburg.

Jewish Culture Days 2023 runs from October 15 to December 7. Tours on Jewish life, concerts, food workshops and themed events are planned.

“It is important that we are aware of the tradition and the present of Jewish life in Saxony-Anhalt,” Haseloff said. “The Jewish religious community is an integral part of social life in Saxony-Anhalt.”

A new synagogue is being built in Magdeburg and is planned to open on December 10. The previous building was destroyed during Kristallnacht in 1938 and later demolished.

Outrage at Hitler ‘beauty’ contest

A woman from Oxford has been “named and shamed” for taking part in a ‘Miss Hitler’ beauty pageant.

The Daily Mail reported last week that Sarah Mountford, 42, was alleged by the Simon Wiesenthal Center to be a participant under an alias, ‘Miss Aryan Angel’.

The competition is hosted by VKontakte, a Russian social media platform. According to the site, the online poll promotes a ‘healthy Hitlerian competition’.

Campaign Against Antisemitism welcomed the expose by the newspaper last week.

A CAA spokesperson said: “This is not the first time that we have encountered so-called ‘Miss Hitler’ pageants. There is nothing beautiful in the grotesque idealisation of Adolf Hitler, who oversaw the murder of millions of Jews and a world war that brought about immense suffering. The far-right continues to find new ways to attract and engage new and existing adherents, and will readily appeal to people’s baser instincts, in this case their vanity. Participants in these far-right activities should be warned: they cannot hide behind pseudonyms, and they will be found and shamed.”

SWC's director of global social action, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, reportedly said: “This is part of an ongoing effort to whitewash the horrific crimes of Nazism, to rewrite history to legitimise a monster who plunged the world into the darkness and perpetrated a genocide that left six million Jews dead, including 1.5 million children. There should be zero tolerance for this outrageous campaign on any, and all, social media platforms.”

Originally from Brighton, Mountford is understood to live in Oxford. She reportedly states on the competitors’ page that she is, “straight, white, pure-blood female with a longing to return to traditional ways. In accordance with nature. Blood and soil. Ancestors and honour. Our people matter.”

CAA noted pictures of Mountford alongside swastikas and other Nazi symbols were found on her page. When contacted, she reportedly told the paper: “It was just a bit of fun, really, a spur of the moment thing. I didn’t set out to upset anyone. It’s not like I’ll get a crown, it’s more of a poll. I’ll try to get it taken down. My views aren’t extreme, you hear the same at every bus stop.”

Mountford added: “He (Adolf Hitler) has been dead a long time. I didn’t think of the impact his name still has.”

Prayers are being recited for singer Dedi Graucher who is in a cardiac intensive care unit at Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer.

Graucher, 62, was taken ill on Motzei Shabbos. He overcame serious illness in 2018 but his medical condition is challenging and has been hospitalised.

Graucher has produced a number of albums and held sold-out concerts.

Dedi’s son, Rabbi Shai Graucher, reportedly told Matzav.com: “At this juncture, when our father requires the collective prayers of Am Yisrael, it is worth to note that his most prominent trait was his capacity to overlook personal grievances. To those who are willing, it is encouraged to undertake a commitment to this concept for his complete recovery.”

Prayers for Dedi Cemetery vandalised

A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with alleged criminal damage to a cemetery adjacent to Chatham Memorial Synagogue, in Rochester, Kent.

Kent Police confirmed investigations into the ‘hate crime’ are ongoing and have appealed for information.

The Grade II listed synagogue has been attacked over the past decade costing £19,000 in repairs. Some congregants are reportedly concerned about attending services.

A Campaign Against Antisemitism spokesperson said: “It is a sober reminder that we are in a time when Jews, including their

institutions, are five times likelier to be targeted in a hate crime. We commend the police for acting swiftly and making an arrest, and expect that any perpetrators will be punished to the full extent of the law.”

Shul trustee, Dr Dalia Halpern-Matthews, said: “We shouldn’t be having to put up with the mass destruction of something that should be sacred. It is the only shul with a cemetery attached in the country.”

Gallant meets Guterres in NY

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has met with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The delegations held a productive discussion on growing threats to Israel’s security and stability in the Middle East region.

Gallant addressed growing tensions on Israel’s northern border as a result of ongoing provocations and violations by Hezbollah including the erection of a Hezbollah tent in Israeli territory, the establishment of dozens of military compounds along the border and patrols by Hezbollah operatives.

Gallant stressed the urgent need for immediate U.N. intervention in deescalating tensions by strengthening UNIFIL authority in the region, ensuring freedom of movement and implementing their mandate.

Gallant also noted that Israel will not tolerate increasing threats to citizens and will act as required in their defence.

The parties discussed Iran, an emphasis on its nuclear ambitions and export of terrorism and weapons. Gallant emphasised the Lebanese case as an example of consequences of Iranian entrenchment.

Gallant called on Guterres for help in

Bibi’s stark warning to Hamas

Netanyahu added: “We are facing a wave of terror from outside and from within. These are not simple times, they are challenging times. We must unite our forces against the terror, the crime wave in the Arab sector and the internal and external threats, organised to a great extent by Iran through its proxies. Together we will overcome all of them.”

Palestinian terror groups warned violence will increase after the government backed Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant to “target terrorists and those who send them”.

According to Arab media reports, terror groups have increased security measures in Gaza and Lebanon.

resolving an MIA issue regarding Israeli citizens held captive by Hamas in Gaza.

Gallant was joined by Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan, Chief of Staff Shachar Katz, Military Secretary Brig. Gen. Guy Markizano, Head of the IDF’s International Cooperation Division Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin and Director of the Policy and Pol-Mil Bureau Dror Shalom.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a stark warning to senior Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri, who resides in Lebanon, at his weekly cabinet meeting.

Netanyahu was clear al-Souri is responsible for the terror group’s military forces in Judea and Samaria.

“He knows well why he and his friends are in hiding,” noted Israel’s leader.

“Hamas and other proxies of Iran understand that we will fight their attempts to promote terror attacks against us in Judea and Samaria, Gaza and anywhere else. Anyone who attempts to hurt us, finance or organise terror attacks against Israel will pay a price in full.”

Al-Arouri reportedly welcomed “direct engagement” with settlers and the IDF along with “lone” militants not affiliated with an organisation.

Israeli officials noted that the comments illustrated al-Arouri’s concern of being targeted for assassination.

The Hamas leader is reportedly behind the recent spike in terror attacks that has claimed 35 Israelis this year. Some 480 attempted terror attacks have been stopped according to reports.

Al-Arouri is head of the Hamas military wing in Judea and Samaria.

The group's strategy affects the Palestinian Authority and Israel's security.

Al-Arouri, according to reports, is responsible for enlisting terror operatives from Beirut.

Leifer gets 15 years in Aussie court

Malka Leifer has begun a 15-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting former students, sisters Dassi Erlich and Elly Sapper, at a Melbourne school she ran between 2003 and 2007.

The protracted court action strained relations between Israel and Australia.

Judge Mark Gamble said Leifer, 56, abused her position at the Adass Israel School and had scarred the sisters for life.

Gamble reportedly said Leifer was a “serious sexual offender” who had shown "callous indifference… for her own perverse sexual gratification” to the suffering of her victims.

Noting “powerful” victim impact statements from Sapper and Erlich, Gamble said: “They were completely innocent victims of the predatory behaviour of Mrs Leifer, and it

is she and she alone who should feel guilty.”

According to Australian media reports, Leifer burst into tears at the verdict by video link from the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, Melbourne’s maximum security prison.

Leifer may be released in 2029 as Gamble would take into consideration 1,129 days spent in detention in Israel and 940 days in Australia. A psychologist reportedly said Leifer is struggling with the guilty verdicts and maintains her innocence. She is eligible for parole in 11 years.

Leifer was convicted on 18 charges of 27 before the jury last April.

Leifer was acquitted of charges against an older sister, Nicole Meyer. The three sisters heard the verdict in the Victorian County Court.

Speaking outside court, Dassi said the sentence ended a traumatic chapter of their lives.

“We are here today because we did not give up,” she said. "While we know that the onus of fighting for justice should not be up to survivors, this fight was never just for us.

“To any other survivors in this nightmare: you are never alone, we are all behind you.”

Erlich and Sapper have called on former Health Minister Yaakov Litzman to apologise after adding to their suffering. Litzman said he respected the judge's decision following the verdict.

Litzman was found guilty of pressuring the ministry's regional psychiatrist to determine Leifer was unfit to stand trial. He was convicted of beach of trust, sentenced to eight months probation and fined NIS 3,000 fine in a plea deal. He was forced to resign from the cabinet and Knesset.

Leifer was suspended from her post and fled to Israel after the students filed complaints in 2008.

She was arrested in 2012, Leifer was put under house arrest in 2014 after Australia filed extradition papers and was eventually extradited in 2021 after a six-year legal battle.

The final extradition hurdle was overcome by Israel’s Supreme Court, when a panel of judges noted Leifer, who holds Israeli and Australian dual citizenship, did not suffer from a mental illness “in a legal sense”.

Adams praises culture of innovation

New York City Mayor Eric Adams praised Israel’s culture of innovation during a three day-trip last week.

Speaking at the White City Soirée in Tel Aviv, co-hosted by the Combat Antisemitism Movement, F2 Venture Capital and Ximus Forum, Adams met Israeli business, finance and technology leaders.

“Hard is starting this country being surrounded by people who hated you,” Mayor Adams noted. “Hard is building and being not only a start-up nation, but now leading a number of start-ups you're seeing across the globe. Don’t stop believing, Israel. That is the potent secret weapon. All of you who are start-ups, you believed in something. The original start-ups were your parents and grandparents, they believed in something. Israel is a ‘unicorn’ because of them. Don’t abandon what they built.”

CAM CEO, Sacha Roytman Dratwa, stated: “New York and Tel Aviv stand out among the most innovative economic hubs across the globe. The visit of Mayor Adams is poised to further enhance the thriving and mutually beneficial business and high-tech ties between these two dynamic cities.”

CAM co-hosted an interfaith reception for Adams at the Jerusalem Campus for the Arts shortly after his arrival in a first visit to Israel since taking office.

Adams met Jewish, Muslim, and Christian religious leaders.

“We cannot be a globe with so much faith, but we see so much devastation,” he noted. “We must live who we say we are. It has to be more than just reading, we now have to start believing.”

Adams visited Yad Vashem, where he noted: “If we want to dismantle and combat antisemitism, we have to go to the core and the heart of it and dismantle the entire team. That's how you get rid of antisemitism.” He added: “There are countless number of people who participated in the Holocaust who got away because we were so focused on

the top layers. Let's not make that mistake again.”

Adams arrived for the visit at the invitation of the Jewish Federation of New York where he began at a meeting with Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion and tour of the Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem.

Lion said: “The two cities share many different common themes, overlapping interests and occupations, and mainly a desire to cooperate and exchange information. We will continue to strengthen the ties between the two cities for the benefit of their residents and visitors.”

Adams met leaders of the protest movement against the judicial overhaul.

He said: “These are historic moments in Israel. I don't want to get involved, I just want to learn. I came here at a crucial moment

and the citizens of Israel have decisions to make. We know that democracy is not easy. “This is one of the most important chapters of this great nation.”

Adams added that New York, renowned as a centre for Israeli startups, had not been impacted by the protests.

Later he toured the Old City and visited the Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

At the Western Wall, Adams said: “We will continue to fight against antisemitism around the world. New York City has one of the largest Jewish populations outside of Israel. As Mayor, I want to send from here, the home of the Jewish people, a clear message to strengthen our decision to fight antisemitism."

Touring the Old City, Adams said the three

major religions “must find a way to live together side by side.”

Adams also met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Eli Cohen before a delegation of businessmen headed by Bank of Israel Deputy Governor Andrew Abir.

Netanyahu met Adams at his office in Jerusalem. Delegations discussed the possibilities for cooperation between New York City and Israel in technology, innovation and tourism.

Netanyahu noted: “You're a great friend of Israel. You live in a city which is the intellectual, cultural, financial hub of the world, and we're sort of another hub. I think if you combine the hubs together we will be better for it.”

Cohen said: “We will work together to strengthen the economic ties between Israel and New York. Israel and New York are connected both because of the largest Jewish community in the world living in the city, and because of the significant presence of Israeli companies in New York. Israel greatly appreciates his work and efforts to combat anti-Semitism. We must continue to act in all ways to combat the phenomenon of the rise of antisemitism.”

Netanyahu and Adams visited a food and innovation FoodTech exhibition devoted to alternative proteins. They tried food products including cultured steak, honey and vegetarian kebabs and hamburgers. Israeli start-ups promoted bilateral cooperation.

Netanyahu met with a US Congressional delegation led by House Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia Chairman Joe Wilson. The sides discussed opportunities for peace in the Middle East and cooperation between the US and Israel in artificial intelligence.

Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, Chief of Staff Tzachi Braverman, Foreign Policy Adviser Ophir Falk, Rep. Dean Phillips, Rep. Victoria Spartz and US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Stephanie L. Hallett attended.

Both South players in a team game reached a fair 6h contract. Both received the lead of the nine of diamonds, suggesting that the diamonds were at least 7-2 since, with three diamonds, West would have led his lowest card.

The first declarer, after winning the first trick with the ace of diamonds, he cashed the ace of trumps and led a second one. When East threw a diamond, declarer had to concede two trump tricks to West, finishing down one.

The other declarer was both more experienced and a student of the odds. After winning the first trick with the ace of diamonds, he crossed to hand with a spade to the ace and led the jack of trumps, running it when West followed with a low card.

After playing a low trump to ace, declarer came back to hand with the ace of clubs and cashed the king of trumps, claiming twelve tricks after conceding a trump to West’s queen.

What are the odds, given the diamonds are breaking 7-2 and there is no defensive ruff? The first declarer succeeds when trumps are 3-2 (about 58%) and also when East has a singleton ten or queen, about a 70% chance. The second declarer makes his contract when trumps are 3:2 or West has four trumps including the Queen, about an 83% chance.

Over 150 GIFT recipients attended ‘Best Foot Forward’ earlier this summer, where a truly impactful pop-up shopping experience awaited them. The event provided a platform for these recipients to browse and select free brand-new items for their homes and the upcoming school year.

The generosity extended beyond the recipients themselves, as more than 40 dedicated students volunteered their time to ensure the success of the event. Their efforts in sorting donations and 500 pairs of Russell and Bromley shoes contributed by the Young Barnet Foundation and Homestart Barnet, showcased the power of collaboration, making a difference in the community.

Parents praised the event, highlighting how it has significantly alleviated the financial burden of back-to-school expenses,

especially for families with multiple young children.

“I was so grateful for this event; my children love their new shoes. GIFT’s work is very much appreciated!” one GIFT recipient said.

Shira Joseph, GIFT’s Programmes Director exclaimed: “One of the most exciting parts of this event was that we were able to engage tons of different volunteers of various age groups. From year 10 students who dealt with the event logistics to young professionals who volunteered as the “shoe shop assistants” and even the families who packed the toiletry bags in advance, each person involved gained so much from the experience.”

Kisharon brochos boards

Kisharon Noé School is promoting gratitude by introducing innovative brochos boards throughout the school. The interactive boards feature talking buttons and are strategically placed throughout the school. The buttons are invaluable tools to assist pupils in reciting appropriate brochos for food, drink, handwashing and bathroom use. With

colour-coded buttons and synchronised audio recordings, students can identify the specific brocho needed and confidently recite it in unison with the recording. This resource enables nonverbal students to express gratitude independently and ensures all students, regardless of their location or working partners, have continuous access to support they need.

Finchley scouts adventure summer

The 20th Finchley Scout Group wrapped up its summer brimming with activities and adventures. Fresh off an extended camp, where participants united with scouts from different groups, the summer journey was exciting. Setting up tents, children cooked meals and enjoyed various activities.

The scouts navigated many activities that included crafting rafts, navigating in kata canoes, stacking crates, archery, climbing and abseiling.

These activities nurtured teamwork and fostered a spirit of resilience for future endeavours.

The scouts embraced the ‘Capital Challenge’ to uncover 14 landmarks nestled within the heart of London. The expedition was accomplished, a testament to enthusiasm and determination.

Summer festivities extended to the cohort of Beavers, aged 6 to 8, who were treated to a sleepover at the Scout Park Activity Centre. Igniting a sense of exploration, the young adventurers savoured toasting marshmallows, unleashed creativity through mask-making and took part in archery.

Scout leader Debra Morris said: “The summer odyssey stands as a testament to the power of camaraderie, self-discovery and the thrill of embracing new challenges. As autumn approaches, the memories will undoubtedly continue to inspire and propel these young scouts forward.”

Abigail’s giant leap for Jewish Care

Leadership Awards.

She has been volunteering in the community for several years and helps with multiple different charities. She has also instigated fortnightly ‘lunch and do’ sessions within her school, King Solomon High School, supported by GIFT. This enables the students at King Solomon High School to give back to the community through charity-based activities. Last year Abigail sat on the panel representing the UK at the World Jewish Congress’ Jewish Youth Assembly.

Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising and Community Engagement, Adam Overlander-Kaye said: “It’s fantastic that Abigail took the plunge in a Skydive to raise funds for Jewish Care and I’d like to say a big thank you to her on behalf of Jewish Care.

Abigail Saltman took a leap from the skies at 10,000ft in a Skydive to fundraise for Jewish Care’s new development in Redbridge this month.

Saltman, 18, is a senior leader in Jewish Care’s MIKE youth leadership programme which motivates, inspires and educates young people in Redbridge and is celebrating its 40th year since it began. Jewish Care is soon to launch the MIKE programme in Stanmore/Bushey borders at Jewish Care’s Sandringham campus.

Abigail said, “I decided it’s about time I overcame my fear of heights and chose to

jump 10,000ft out of a plane to fundraise for the new community campus that will support the local community.

“I have been involved in Jewish Care for the past five years, with their MIKE leadership scheme. It’s an amazing programme and is enabling young people to be the next generation of leaders. It has given me the confidence to run workshops for young children, represent my school and speak at public events, and the opportunity to volunteer and support others.”

Last year, Abigail won the Jack Petchey Achievement Award at the MIKE Youth

“Abigail has already made a huge impact on young people, the wider community and her peers, making the most of her leadership skills to improve the lives of others. Her bravery to overcome her fear of heights to fundraise for charity is inspiring and we wish Abigail the very best of luck in her challenge.”

The organisation is planning the new development to meet the needs of the East London and Essex Jewish community on the site of the current Redbridge Jewish Community Centre.

The site will comprise a community centre space for people living with dementia along with a 66-bed care home, which the current Vi & John Rubens House in Gants Hill will relocate to.

The Social Work and Community Support team and Meals on Wheels teams will be based at the site.

SEPHARDI V ASHKENAZI PRAYER

Dear Rabbi

A little while back you wrote about the Ashkenazi custom of eating gefilte fish on a Friday night. I have a very different but follow on question from that. Why is there such disparity between the Ashkenazi and Sephardic way of praying? Ashkenazim are quite quick while Sephardim really take their time, word by word out loud. I am of Iraqi origin and personally I see the virtue in the Sephardic style of prayer. Rushing through the prayers like the Ashkenazim do, is sort of defeating the whole purpose of prayer. I wonder whether you can shed some insight.

Sam the Sephardi

Dear Sam

Two little sisters were spending their Chanukah weekend at the Grandparents. At bedtime, they are lying on their beds getting ready to utter their prayers. Suddenly the littler sister starts to pray at the top of her lungs: “I pray for a new Barbie Doll House,” “I pray for a new Lego set, I pray for a new Nintendo Switch.” The older sister looks to her: “Why are you shouting like that? G-d isn’t deaf you know!” “No, but Grandma’ is!”

I appreciate the virtues of Sephardic style prayer but please tell me why Sephardic Jews pray every single word out loud? And not just out loud but so loud? G-d isn’t deaf you know! Give me an Ashkenazi service any day. Calm, quiet, composed. How am I supposed to concentrate on my words and my prayer when Shalom on my right is bellowing in a C minor and Moshe to my left is screeching in an F major?

I once walked into the wrong shul on a Friday night. True story. I was supposed to meet my host in Golders Green who had already left to shul and instead of locating his shteibel I ended up in a Sephardic shul. I’m not going to lie to you – as soon as I realised it I was ready to make an about face. But the Rabbi recognised me and invited me to sit next to him.

To my pleasant surprise, they were not doing every prayer word for word out loud. I thought, “Good, at least I’ll get back for the meal on time.” And then – Shir hashirim asher l’Shlomo … I’m thinking, “oh no, what’s this? What’s happening here?” Yashekaini minishikas pihoo… There’s a widespread custom to recite this text from King Solomon each Friday night. But each word out loud? 30

minutes and eight chapters later, birach dodi udimay lecha litzvi. By the time I got back to my host, the soup was cold.

I’m not saying we should rush through our prayers. What I am saying is that we should be mindful of the fact that people have limited concentration spans, and a cacophony of voices spread over three hours, is, to my mind, hardly conducive to the required meditation and contemplation required during prayer.

Bottom line: I don’t want to keep my wife and family waiting. I don’t want to keep my host waiting. I don’t want the soup to go cold. I want the service to be a meaningful but equally practical experience.

Besides, Sephardim will find it pretty straightforward to navigate their way through an Ashkenazi service. I know this because I have several of them who attend my shul. On the other hand, sticking an Ashkenazi Jew into a Sephardic service is like putting an Eskimo in Miami Beach. You’ll feel the warmth but you’ll have no clue what to do. And the noise will scare you.

PS: To my fellow Sephardic brothers and sisters, please take the above with a pinch of salt and the light-heartedness in which it is intended.

PPS: The story in Golders Green really did happen.

A NEW, NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

Dear Rabbi

It’s that time of year, yet again. I am in need of a New Year’s resolution and thought that perhaps, once again, you can provide one. Last year you told me to keep the one from the year before which is fair enough. I can tell you however, that this year I went to my local Synagogue on average twice a month on two different Shabbats which was my resolution from the previous year that was difficult to keep because of the pandemic. So I definitely deserve something for this year. Go on, challenge me!

Martyn

Dear Martyn

Start going to Synagogue on average three times a month on three different Shabbats! Well, you asked!

IS THERE LIFE OUT THERE?

Dear Rabbi

You may have heard some of the evidence at the US congressional hearing on UFO’s. I was wondering whether the existence of aliens could fit with the understanding of the Torah.

Lisa

Dear Lisa

Several Torah scholars of past generations have discussed the possibility of life on other planets. Rabbi Chasdai Crescas (Spain, 1340–1411) wrote that there is nothing anywhere in Torah that negates

such a possibility.

Shortly after the first moon landing, the Lubavicher Rebbe pointed out that there is support in Torah for the notion that life exists on other planets. In the Book of Judges, Deborah the prophetess sings about the victory of Barak over Sisera. In her song, she says, “Cursed be Meroz! Cursed, cursed be its inhabitants, says the angel of G-d!”

Where is Meroz, and who are its inhabitants? The Talmud gives two explanations, one of them being that Meroz is a star or planet. The heavenly bodies had also come to help the Israelites, as Deborah stated just one verse earlier, “From the heavens they fought, the stars from their orbits . . .” This star, however, which was the dominant star of Sisera, apparently did not come to their aid. And so, General Barak penalized Meroz—and its inhabitants.

Are these inhabitants intelligent?

Intelligence is defined by Torah to mean the capacity to make decisions with free will. Free will is only possible where there is Torah, whereby the Creator offers His creatures more than one possibility and asks that they make the appropriate choice. So, if there would be intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, those creatures would have to have Torah. Could they have a different Torah than us? This is not possible, since Torah is truth, and there cannot be two truths.

Could they then have the same Torah as us? This also seems impossible, since the Torah itself describes in detail how the Torah was revealed on this planet, and that account itself has a strong impact on how the Torah is to be fulfilled.

It therefore appears that although it is quite possible there is life on other planets, that life would not be intelligent in a way similar to human life and culture.

Torah from Israel Secret Crimes

The season of teshuvah and of moral improvement has arrived. A honest moral accounting helps us identify the sins we hope to repair and the character flaws we hope to overcome. A comprehensive personal inventory though, must address, not only specific actions, but overall behavioural trends. Which situations bring out our better selves and which situations bring out the worst in us. One aspect to consider is how we behave in a world which affords us greater anonymity.

REENACTING SINAI

The Torah was delivered upon a barren mountain, situated in a sterile desert. As Hashem’s word lies beyond time and space it descended to this world beyond the realm of human civilization. Once we entered Israel though, it became necessary to restage the Sinai experience. Without embracing Hashem’s word our license to this land is nullified.

Soon after we entered the land, the delivery of Torah was recreated upon two mountains in Northern Israel, in current day Samaria. Several fundamental commandments were reformulated, including many of those already engraved on the tablets. This list includes injunctions against idolatry, warnings against moral crimes and a lengthy list of sexual prohibitions.

Alongside these familiar prohibitions, we also received a brand new warning. We were cautioned not to harm others through acts committed in secret.

Years earlier, at Sinai there was no mention of “secret” crimes, and for good reason. During our tiring desert journey, we didn’t enjoy any private or personal space. The entire population of three and a half million was crammed into a relatively tight radius. Life outside the Jewish encampment was unsafe, and no one dared venture beyond the perimeter and beyond the protection of divine clouds. The prospect of a sin committed in secret or in private was unrealistic and no specific warning was required.

Entering Israel however, and building private homesteads presented a new danger of clandestine sins against others, and this new threat demanded an entirely new warning.

Public opinion serves as a powerful deterrent against immoral behaviour. Concern about preserving our reputation and sensitivity to prevailing social codes both disincentivise unethical behaviour. Actions taken outside of the public eye, however, are always less restrained and, often, are more dishonest and manipulative. When we are faceless, we are often shameless. When identity is hidden, we

aren’t answerable for our actions, and our conduct slides. For this reason, at the Israeli re-enactment of Sinai, we were specifically warned about inflicting harm upon others through concealed behaviour.

HALLOWEEN STUDY

A famous social experiment known as the Halloween study, conducted in 1976, convincingly demonstrated the effects of social accountability. As part of the study, some children were asked general identification questions such as where they lived, or questions about their family, while other children remained completely anonymous. Both sets of children were offered candy, and their behaviour was monitored by out-of-sight observers. Even though they weren’t aware they were being watched, the children acted differently. Those who had identified themselves were more restrained in taking candy, whereas those who had remained anonymous were less inhibited. Mere knowledge that our identity is transparent provides social accountability and encourages self-regulated behaviour. Concealed identity, on the other hand, affords us a shroud of anonymity under which our behaviour is less restrained.

THE MODERN CLOAK OF ANONYMITY

The internet has provided us all with a cloak of anonymity, enabling our personal expression without disclosing our individual identity. Admittedly, this invisibility has provided various benefits, such as allowing us to voice unpopular opinions and empowering us to be critical of governments without the fear of retaliation.

However, the cloak of anonymity which the internet offers is eroding healthy communication. Freed of any social accountability, we ignore or even flout the norms of civility which should govern and moderate human interaction. Conversation on the internet often degenerates into aggression, anger, bigotry, shaming, and bullying. Comments and talkbacks are often radicalised, and people are vilified for their opinions. Of course, as to be expected, all this verbal chaos ends in antisemitism.

Whereas we used to cancel checks or appointments, today we cancel people, and we stifle their voices. Ironically, freedom of expression has led to the oppressiveness of “cancel culture”. Beware the tyrannies which misused freedom always imposes.

Finally, anonymity encourages cowardly aggression. It isn’t incidental that the infamous hacking group, which assaults organizations and countries which

they believe to be criminal, is called “Anonymous:”. It is too easy to attack others without announcing your identity or intent. The internet has provided a cloak for cowards.

Inevitably, our discourteous internet conversation bleeds into our daily life and infects our overall communication style. What happens on the internet quickly influences what happens in real time. Our world is angrier and more rude, in part, because of the way we speak to one another on the internet.

Additionally, the rapid pace of internet communication encourages us to respond hastily, as we impetuously say and write things we later regret and are often forced to retract. Hurried internet communication conditions us to speak recklessly, without properly filtering our thoughts before they reach our lips.

The Torah warns us against harming others through secret crimes. The realm of secret crimes and the scope of these crimes have each expanded in the modern world. Comprehensive religious self-examination demands that we consider how we have communicated on various internet platforms.

HYPOCRISY

Sins committed in secret also invite hypocritical behaviour. When we sin in secret, we open a gap between our public persona and our real self, making claim to moral or religious standards which we don’t actually adhere to. When personal behaviour deviates too sharply from public impression, we become walking deceptions. Sometimes our hypocrisy is calculated and other times it is unwitting, but either way, we mislead others about our virtue and we gather unfair reputational benefits.

Aside from the deception of others, hypocritical behaviour also makes us inauthentic as we constantly pursue two different lives – our real persona and our public masks. Sins performed in secret aren’t just harmful to others but toxic to a life of authenticity.

ACCEPTING OURSELVES

Though we crave authenticity and abhor hypocrisy, we must not judge ourselves too harshly. It is virtually impossible to completely live by our own moral code and to completely sync our inner lives with the values we cherish. Ultimately, social acceptance and personal reputation are powerful motivators of religious behaviour, and there will always be a gap between our public and private selves. As long as that gap isn’t too large, and as long as we don’t intentionally manipulate people or falsely engineer our reputation, we must accept the limits of

human nature and the inescapable builtin duplicity. Everyone lives with a gap between professed moral standards and personal conduct. Gaps are acceptable, canyons are not.

The Talmud relates the death-bed scene of the great teacher, Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakai. In his final religious guidance to his students, he asked that their fear of Heaven equal their fear of social opinion. His shocked students protested that fear of Heaven should exceed concern for social reputation. With wisdom accrued over a lifetime he responded “halevai”. If only they acted in private in the presence of G-d at least as piously as they presented themselves in public. Recognizing human Nature, this wise man urged his students to sync their private lives with their public behaviour. He probably understood that they would never fully succeed, but he encouraged them to try.

Weekly Dvar Torah FROM ERETZ YISRAEL

Back to Har Sinai

Moshe’s concluding remarks at the end of his final speech include a striking parallel to G-d’s original charge to Bnei Yisrael at Har Sinai. Recall that when Bnei Yisrael first arrive at Har Sinai, G-d summons Moshe to the mountain and proposes a special covenant with Bnei Yisrael:

“And now, if you will listen to my voice and keep my covenant, then you shall become for Me a ‘segula’ amongst all the nations... and you shall be for Me a kingdom of priests and an ‘am kadosh’...” (Shemot 19:5–6)

This proposal, which actually forms the prelude to the Ten Commandments, explains the primary purpose of Matan Torah – that Am Yisrael become a goy kadosh to represent G-d.

Now, at the conclusion of the main speech, in which Moshe Rabbeinu repeats those mitzvot which were originally given at Har Sinai, we find this very same

theme repeated:

“And G-d has affirmed this day that you are, as He promised you [at Har Sinai!], His am segula who shall observe all of His commandments, and that He will set you, in fame and renown and glory, high above all the nations that He has made; and that you shall be, as He promised [at Har Sinai!] an am kadosh…” (26:18–19)

Moshe’s concluding remarks are quite appropriate, for the purpose of the mitzvot are to help Bnei Yisrael become a segula and an am kadosh; just as He had originally promised them at Har Sinai!

This parallel to Ma’amad Har Sinai continues in the parasha immediately afterward:

“...erect these stones on Har Eival... And you shall build there a mizbayach... (note parallel to Shemot 20:22), and you shall offer upon it olot and shlamim…” (Devarim 27:1–8)

Recall how an almost identical ceremony took place some forty years earlier

Ki Tavo Sidra Summary

a text known as viduy ma’aserot is said, which declares one’s careful commitment to the laws of tithing, followed by a prayer to G-d to bless the Land.

Point to Consider: In what part of our liturgy is the final part of the viduy ma’aserot also said? (26:15)

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 26:16-19

Moshe encourages the people to keep the mitzvot and to view them every day as fresh and new (Rashi). This will elevate the nation to the status of being holy and distinguished.

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – DEVARIM 26:1-11

Once the nation has come into the Land of Israel, there is a mitzvah for a produce-grower to take the first fruits of the new harvest and place them in a basket, before bringing them to a Kohen in the Temple (the mitzvah of bikkurim). After the Kohen takes the basket, the person who has brought the fruit reads out a text which recalls the initial descent to Egypt, the slavery and the redemption. It concludes with an expression of gratitude to G-d for the bounty of the Land.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 26:12-15

At the end of every third and sixth year of the seven year shemitah cycle, one has to make sure that all the tithes from the produce of the Land from the previous years have been given to their respective recipients. Once that has been organised,

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 27:1-10

Moshe tells the people that on the day they cross the Jordan, they should take stones, coat them with plaster and inscribe upon them the words of the Torah. They should erect these stones on Mount Eival, where they shall also build an altar and bring peace-offerings.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 27:11-28:5

After the nation enters the Land, they will come to Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival. Six of the tribes are to stand on one mountain, six on the other. The Levi’im will stand in between the mountains to call out the blessings and the curses, to which the people will respond “Amen” (Rashi).

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 28:6-69

This aliya opens with further blessings.

at Ma’amad Har Sinai, immediately after Moshe teaches Bnei Yisrael the laws which G-d gave him after the Ten Commandments:

“And Moshe came [down from Har Sinai] and told the people all of G-d’s commandments and the mishpatim... Moshe then wrote down all of G-d’s commandments. Then, he woke up early in the morning and built a mizbayach at the foot of the mountain and erected twelve large stones... and they offered olot and shlamim…” (Shemot 24:3–8)

There is also a “tochacha” which is to be read at that ceremony (Devarim 27:11–28:69) on Har Eival, just as there was a “tochacha” which was read at Har Sinai (Vayikra 26:3–46, 25:1).

The reason for this parallel is quite simple: This generation was not present at the original ceremony, so a new ceremony is required in which this generation can reaffirm their commitment to their covenant with G-d.

Thus, this ceremony which Bnei Yisrael must perform on Har Eival will ‘relive’ the experience of Har Sinai when Bnei Yisrael proclaimed “na’aseh v’nishma” (Shemot 24:3–11).

It is not often in our history that one generation is given an opportunity to fulfill a destiny which was originally planned for an earlier generation. Aware of this potential, Moshe encourages the new generation in the desert to rise to the challenge of setting up an am kadosh in the Promised Land, as G-d had originally planned for the generation of their parents.

Although this challenge by Moshe Rabbeinu to Am Yisrael is some three thousand years old, it takes on additional significance today, as our own generation has been given the potential to fulfill this very same destiny.

Rabbi Menachem Leibtag is an internationally acclaimed Tanach scholar and online Jewish education pioneer. He is a member of the Mizrachi Speakers Bureau (www.mizrachi.org/speakers).

If we follow G-d’s will – our enemies will flee from us and other nations will be in awe of us.

The sidra continues with the tochacha, the passage of retribution (which is recited in an undertone by the person reading from the Torah). If we do not listen to G-d and do not observe His mitzvot, the consequences will be grave. Verse after verse warns of petrifying suffering, including illness, plague, blindness, children being taken captive, being at the mercy of other peoples, and the nation becoming scattered over the Earth.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 29:1-8

Moshe reminds the people of their

wondrous Exodus from Egypt, their miraculous survival in the desert for 40 years and their victories over the mighty kings Sichon and Og.

HAFTARAH

Taken from the book of Yeshaya, this is the sixth of the ‘seven haftarot of consolation’ read after Tisha B’Av. The prophet relates a vision of the nations of the world coming to Zion and recognising G-d. Violence and pain will become memories of the past –“never again shall your sun set, nor shall your moon be withdrawn; for G-d will be an eternal light”. These verses are included in the Memorial Prayer recited at cemeteries and shiva houses.

The Five Stages of Torah

In our previous article, we began exploring the five spiritual stages of the creative process. As the Vilna Gaon explains, everything in the universe is comprised of five stages or parts. To briefly review:

1. The initial stage of every thought is a flash of inspiration, the instant when an idea enters the mind, but remains ethereal, undefined, and still somewhat elusive.

2. The second stage of the creative process is where the flash of inspiration becomes more expressed and further defined as a general idea or concept.

3. The third stage is where the general idea of the second stage begins to take on detail, becoming a full-fledged, defined thought-process.

4. The fourth stage is where the concrete thoughts within your mind become expressed outwards into the physical world.

5. The fifth stage is the final, expressed form of that original flash of inspiration, now a fully expressed entity in the physical world.

Fascinatingly, the Vilna Gaon explains the structure and layout of the Chumash in accordance with this five-step template. The Torah is not split into five parts for convenience or practical organization. The five books represent the five spiritual stages of the Torah.

BEREISHIS

Bereishis is the inception of the physical world, as well as the seed of the Jewish People. The ultimate purpose of creation is for humanity to reach its perfection and achieve absolute oneness with Hashem. Adam was initially entrusted with this mission, and when he failed, the opportunity and responsibility to accept this mission was passed down through each generation — from Noach, to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and finally to Yaakov, from whom Klal Yisrael emerges.

Thus, Bereishis is the initial flash of inspiration, the spark of conception, the initial stage of humanity’s mission and evolutionary story.

SHEMOS

Shemos is the second stage of this process, where the flash of inspiration develops into a more fully formed, tangible idea. In Sefer Shemos, the Jewish People are born as they leave Mitzrayim. Yetzias Mitzrayim was not simply a physical process, by which the Jewish People departed from the land of Egypt and headed toward a new location. It was a spiritual metamorphosis, an existential transition, the birth of a people. Prior to leaving Mitzrayim, the Jewish People were a collective of individuals, but upon leaving, we became a nation, a single people, a unified whole.

Klal Yisrael then received their identity and idealistic mission at Matan Torah, collectively accepting the responsibility to fulfill the original goal of creation: to help humanity reach its perfection and achieve absolute oneness with Hashem. We became destined to bridge the gap between the infinite and finite, the spiritual and physical. Klal Yisrael built the Mishkan, which would serve as the focal point of connection between the spiritual and the physical, as well as the medium of connection between Hashem and Klal Yisrael.

Once the general plan has been set in place, the details must come next.

VAYIKRA

Vayikra is the third stage in the process, where the general principles of Sefer Shemos become expressed and manifest in full detail. In Shemos, we received our mission on Har Sinai and accepted our responsibility to devote our lives toward connecting with Hashem, as well as the task of building the Mishkan, the focal point of this connection. In Vayikra, we are shown the extensive details regarding how to achieve this connection with Hashem. Vayikra thus includes all the halachos of the Mishkan, korbanos, and kehunah. This allows us to translate the general ideas set forth in Shemos into a concrete, expressed reality.

BAMIDBAR

Bamidbar is the fourth stage, where the theoretical, conceptual plan transitions into action; where the expression begins to unfold within time and space; and where the implementation of the ideas and ideals are attempted. This is the stage of dibbur, speech, the process of taking thoughts and ideas and expressing them into the world. This is why the shoresh of the word “Bamidbar” is dibbur, which means speech.

However, Bamidbar is also where everything goes wrong, where problems begin to arise. In the transition from thought to speech and action, challenges emerge. Sefer Bamidbar features many of the sins of Klal Yisrael, most of which relate to the misuse of speech, representing the inability to transition from higher to lower, from ideal to practice, from idea to speech.

Miriam is reprimanded for speaking lashon hara about Moshe (Bamidbar, perek 12). The Meraglim fail to learn from her mistake and speak lashon hara as well (Rashi, Bamidbar 13:2). Korach misuses speech to create machlokes and chaos within Klal Yisrael (Bamidbar, perek 16). Moshe strikes the rock, using action when words were appropriate (Bamidbar 20:11–12). Bilaam attempts to use speech to curse the Jewish People (Bamidbar, perek 24). The Misonenim (complainers) use their speech to complain and criticize Hashem (Bamidbar, perek 11.

This is why the sefer is called “Bamidbar,” which refers to the misuse of speech. The word “midbar” literally means “from speech” (mi-dibbur), representing a

breakdown and departure from proper speech. The word “midbar” also refers to a desert, a place that represents the breakdown of speech. The desert represents the concept of spiritual emptiness; it is the place where the process of life breaks down, and spiritual direction erodes. A road provides a path toward a clear destination, but in the desert, there are no roads, no paths, and therefore no clarity of purpose or direction. It is a place of wilderness and chaos without growth, water, or life.

Fascinatingly, this is why mirages appear specifically in the desert. Mirages are a mysterious phenomenon, and while there are scientific explanations for them, it is still astonishing that people in the desert sometimes see water, structures, or even whole cities when there is actually nothing there. The fact, though, that mirages occur specifically in the desert reflects a deep spiritual concept. The desert is a place of illusion, where our perception of reality breaks down. The Midrash explains that the Malach HaMaves (Angel of Death) showed the Jewish People an illusion of Moshe’s death while they were in the midbar to convince them of their helplessness (Rashi, Shemos 32:1). This breakdown led to the cheit ha’egel, the most terrible sin in Jewish history. The midbar is the place of illusion, where we lose the ability to correctly translate what we see; where the process of communication shatters. Speech, intelligible pathways, and life itself cannot exist in the desert.

(This is why the Torah was given in the midbar; it is the only place where truth can be heard. (The Maharal [Tiferes Yisrael 26] explains that just as the timing of Matan Torah was fundamental, the physical location was fundamental as well.) When there is noise and distraction, truth cannot be properly heard or internalized. Only when there is silence, and the complete absence of ego, can the truth be heard, understood, and accepted. The Torah is the absolute and whole truth and can therefore only be given when there is absolutely nothing else competing against it. If one thinks that the Torah is “one” of many truths, that Moshe was “one” of the many prophets, then it will not be possible to arrive at the truth. Torah is not just one of the options; it is the absolute truth, the definition of reality. As such, it was given in a place where nothing else speaks to show that Torah stands alone as the holistic and absolute truth.)

There is, however, an obvious problem: why is Sefer Bamidbar full of misuses of speech? Why is the fourth stage of the Torah, the stage that is supposed to represent the spiritual concept of speech, replete with corruptions of speech?

The answer is profound: The best way to learn a principle is to see the principle and its opposite. As the Maharal and Ramchal explain, human beings learn from comparison and contrast. We understand the concept of wisdom by seeing foolishness, goodness from

witnessing evil, and wealth from seeing poverty. The Torah includes countless examples of proper and ideal speech, but only by seeing the misuse of speech can we truly understand the essence of proper speech. Only by seeing the corruption of speech can we learn and strive to perfect our own speech.

The purpose of the Torah is to uplift a darkened, shattered world to connect the physical to its spiritual source. The fourth stage is where we struggle to achieve our goal, where we must push through the roadblocks as we build and actualize that original flash of inspiration. Our job in this world is to build the road in the wasteland of this world, to express Hashem’s will into a world that has lost its direction. In Sefer Bamidbar, the Jews travel through the midbar, struggling to express Hashem’s will into the world, struggling to live up to their lofty mission as Hashem’s chosen nation. Finding direction in the midbar was a true journey of creating light in the darkness, creating clarity amidst chaos and confusion.

DEVARIM

Devarim is the fifth stage of the Torah, where the process of yetzias Mitzrayim and our journey in the midbar results in Moshe’s actual words, where the journey to Eretz Yisrael is completed, and where the goal is achieved. For this reason, it is called Devarim (words), as Moshe speaks the words of Devarim himself, representing the culmination of the process, the final expression. This is also why the content of Sefer Devarim is mostly a repetition of the previous sefarim. As the Vilna Gaon and Maharal explain, Devarim does not represent a new sefer; it is a revelation and reformulation of all that preceded it.

ORDER WITHIN THE CHAOS

This five-stage pattern exists within every process in life. Everything in this world, even that which appears chaotic, scattered, and disorganized, shares this underlying pattern. Everything in life begins with a spark; every creative process begins with a big idea. Then comes the rigorous journey of bringing that spark to fruition, turning that idea into something tangible, and expressing the spiritual creation into the physical world. May we be inspired to grab hold of the initial stage of inspiration and follow through with our commitment to actualize it, bringing our spiritual greatness into full expression in this world. May we also, both individually and collectively, continue to accept the responsibility of fulfilling the original goal of creation: to help humanity reach its perfection and achieve absolute oneness with Hashem.

Family Fun Ki Tavo

Parshat Ki Tavo begins with Moshe instructing the Jewish people that when they enter the land of Israel, they are to be aware of the Mitzvah of Bikurim. This involves going down to one’s field, finding the first growths of any of the 7 species that the land was blessed with – Wheat, Barley, Grapes, Figs, Pomegranates, Olives, Dates and wrapping a reed around them, and preparing for what was a grand event at the Beit Hamikdash. The farmer would bring these “first fruit” and offer them to the Kohen. The journey to Jerusalem was very joyous and was carried out amidst great song and happiness. Not only were the fruit brought, but a special paragraph was recited, expressing the farmer’s gratitude to Hashem. The Bikkurin is given as a gift to the Kohen and the farmer was also

grateful to be associated with spiritual people, albeit temporarily.

The Parsha continues with the declaration one makes once they have distributed or brought to the Beit Hamikdash, the various “Ma’asrot” –tithes. This too involved a declaration in the Beit Hamikdash but was enjoyed by the owner themselves.

We are given detail of the blessings and curses which were to be announced on the two famous mountains – Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival. The Levi’im would stand in the valley, with the Jewish people split between the two mountain and the Levi’im would express the list of behaviours that invoke a blessing and the list of behaviours that sadly cause the opposite.

Moshe reminds the Jewish nation that

they are the chosen people and they have also chosen Hashem (perhaps due in no small part to the fact that they – or rather our ancestor Avraham – chose Hashem against the common trends at his time).

The next part of Ki Tavo (similar to Bechukotai) tells of the blessings that meet the Jewish people if they remain faithful to Hashem, His Torah and Mitzvot. It also goes to great length to describe the sadness and less than happy things that happen in the event that the Jews try to abandon Hashem, the Torah or Mitzvot. We are taught that the warnings given in Bechukotai were sadly fulfilled at the time of the destruction of the first Temple, and the second at the time of the destruction of the second Temple. Unfortunately, we have not

always “got the message” and until our times we sometimes hear of sad events and although we do not know the full reason for them, it has always been our tradition to reflect on our actions and consider how we can improve them in response to tragedy (may G-d spare us).

Not all is doom and gloom, though. Moshe reminds the Jewish people of the miracles that Hashem performed for them since they left Egypt and that therefore they are to remain loyal to the covenant which they undertook at Har Sinai, which was the purpose of the Exodus from Egypt.

We look to this Parsha as a source of inspiration – we try our best to keep the Mitzvot and look forward to bringing blessing not only on ourselves, but upon the entire world!

EXPERT ADVICE

Dear Trevor

Two of my friends have recently told me that they have recently saved a considerable amount on their Health Insurance and not lose any cover, In one case they changed policy and obtained higher cover, the other when they asked the intermediary to represent them. Is that really possible or are they exaggerating?

Deborah

Great question Deborah,

It is almost certainly true, although the answer requires some context. If you have private health insurance, then you should review it each and every year. You do this to primarily see whether you can get the same cover more cheaply, or even perhaps add more cover and this could involve changing the existing plan. Whatever you decide it must be affordable and provide you with peace of mind. One client who I recently advised kept with the same plan, but decided to modify it to self -pay for outpatient consultations, as the savings were quite considerable. Another client saved a considerable amount by telling me that a particular condition of theirs was now being looked after by the NHS, and so they didn’t need to be paying for a previous claim history. Another thing to bear in mind is that you may be paying for hospitals you will never use!

As an FCA licensed intermediary, we have a legal responsibility to advise you impartially and independently. In effect, this means not being distracted by providers’ marketing but to advise on the correct policy for each individual and family, and company. It may well be the case that a new insurance plan will give you more consultations and diagnostic tests than another’s.

With pre-existing conditions for example, the insurers do often adopt different approaches, and we negotiate with the underwriters on your behalf. All these issues could significantly impact on the cost of your premiums. Interestingly, it may be even preferable in some cases to pay a little more and have a policy where any claims do not impact on the renewal premiums!

One other thing, there is absolutely no charge for our services, as premiums are exactly the same through Patient Health as directly with the insurance provider. By law, the insurers must not advise you, as their advice could be prejudicial, since they can only sell their own products.

So if you want your health insurance to more affordable, please give me a call. Free, independent advice with no fees, so it’s always sensible to ask us to review your policy, at any time.

City aim for four in a row before international break

Manchester City will look to make it four Premier League wins from as many games before the international break when they welcome Fulham to the Etihad Stadium in the latest round of fixtures.

City, with manager Pep Guardiola convalescing after a recent back operation, showed a desire to defend their title with a 2-1 over Sheffield United last weekend.

The Blades battled away and equalised late on against City, who took the lead through Erling Halland then struck late on through Rodri to remain the only team with an unblemished record.

The season may be in its early days but City are the team to beat. Guardiola has

brought new players in and his side look determined to continue their domination of the domestic game.

West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have made impressive starts to remain unbeaten alongside Arsenal with two victories apiece.

Arsenal welcome Manchester United to the Emirates Stadium and this clash will be a highlight on Sunday.

The Gunners were surprisingly held 2-2 by 10-man Fulham last time out so will hope to get back to winning ways against United who recovered from going 2-0 behind to Nottingham Forest inside four minutes to win courtesy of a Bruno Fernandes penalty at Old Trafford.

The Reds have won two games to date

but this will be a testing afternoon for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, meantime, enjoyed a startling victory at Newcastle United last Sunday at St James Park.

Liverpool were a goal behind and down to 10 men after Virgil van Dyke was red-carded in the first half before Darwin Nunes came off the bench late on to secure a stunning win with a brace. Klopp is rebuilding and his charges will be pushed when Aston Villa, boasting two triumphs, arrive at Anfield next.

The Hammers, who lost talisman Declan Rice to Arsenal during the summer, have started the campaign in fine form. David Moyes’ team were mighty impressive at Brighton in a 3-1 triumph and should prove

far too strong for newly promoted Luton Town.

Tottenham, likewise, have begun well under new boss Ange Postecoglu however they will be tested at Burnley who have yet to pick up a point but are tough opponents especially at Turf Moor.

Brighton and Newcastle meet on the south coast and both are desperate to bounce back from defeats so this could be a really entertaining clash.

Forest travel to Chelsea, who looked sharp in a comfortable first victory for new boss Mauricio Pochettino against Luton, one of four clubs looking for first points. Sheffield who host Everton are in that unwanted group and this clash is one neither side wants to lose even at this stage of the season.

In other fixtures, unbeaten Brentford and Crystal Palace host Bournemouth and Wolves respectively.

With the transfer window closing this week clubs and fans will be relieved they can finally concentrate solely on matters on the pitch.
