Ardoch marks 30th Anniversary with reception at Government House ARDOCH 2018 marks the 30th year since Ardoch’s founder Kathy Hilton took on the responsibility of supporting a 17-year-old homeless student from her school, Ardoch Windsor Secondary College. Without the aid of government agencies, Kathy turned to her networks and local community to provide assistance to the young student.

From this act of goodwill, the history of what was then called Ardoch Youth Foundation was born.

Ardoch has since been through considerable growth with a stronger focus on delivering tailored educational support programs working alongside partner schools and early years services, however the core values of the organisation remain true to Kathy’s vision from 30 years ago.

Today, Ardoch delivers educational support programs that aim to increase engagement, build aspiration and enhance learning outcomes of children and young people in disadvantaged communities.

Ardoch’s programs focus on literacy and STEM and unique learning opportunities that provide access to rich life experiences that help children gain a greater understanding of their world and contribute significantly to their educational outcomes and career

Ardoch now mobilises upwards of 1,700 volunteers from the community and workplaces to engage one-on-one with children across nearly 100 schools and early years centres. Over 30 years Ardoch’s programs have involved many thousands of children. In 2017 alone Ardoch’s programs benefit nearly 12,000 children and young

people.

To mark the anniversary, donors, partner schools, philanthropic trusts, volunteers, community and corporate partners were invited to attend a reception at the historic Government House in Victoria in recognition of Ardoch’s 30th year.

Anthony Howard QC gave a warm reception acknowledging the enduring impact Ardoch has had on various communities and individuals over the course of Ardoch’s 30-year history. Lady Anna Cowen AM Kathy Hilton AO, Rob Hilton, Barry Borzillo (Chair of Ardoch), David Southwick MP (Former Chair of Ardoch) and Kylee Bates (CEO, Ardoch), were all in attendance as the Governor expressed her admiration of Ardoch’s work to the room. Barry Borzillo went on to echo the Governors words by stressing the immense impact Ardoch has had on improving educational outcomes for children and young people in disadvantaged communities.

As speeches concluded and refreshments began circulating the room, guests were invited to explore various parts of the breathtaking estate. Open to viewing was the dining room, ballroom and the billiards room where Prince William and Harry recently spent time in-between public events.

Thank you to all the honoured guests for joining Ardoch as they celebrate its past, present and future.

Ardoch is excited to continue working with its partner schools and communities ensuring every child’s potential is realised through full participation in education.

Aussie Madrichim Spend Summer in the Arava ARAVA AUSTRALIA PARTNERSHIP STACY HAYMAN The Australia Arava Partnership in collaboration with the Zionist Federation of Australia (ZFA) has sent four madrichim to work at a Summer Camp in the Central Arava for the second year running.

The Melbourne youth leaders were selected and trained to run a summer camp in the Arava together with the local Israeli madrichim (youth leaders.) The project serves to enhance the connection between Australia and the Arava which is the key objective of the partnership.

Partnership2gether (P2G) is the global living bridge project of the Jewish Agency for Israel aimed at connecting Israeli communities with Diaspora communities.

The Central Arava region was “adopted”

by Australia as our partnership community in 1995 and the relationships and joint projects which have emerged from the partnership have been varied, broad and deep.

The Aussie madrichim used their informal leadership skills to teach English to the campers in an experiential and enjoyable way as well as leading a range of camp activities. More importantly, their presence and the relationships they developed with the children of the Arava provided a tangible Australian connection to the local youth as well as to the broader Arava community. Idan Gafin, a former Habonim Dror madrich said: - “The community in the Arava is so hospitable; I had a great time at Shabbat dinner with a local family, which gave me an opportunity to hear about what day to day life is like in the Arava. The children became very familiar with the Australian madrichim and I have really connected with them during the camp- they are always excited to see us!”

The four madrichim were an integral part of the camp’s leadership team and led various activities. They brought a unique perspective to the camp and encouraged the use of English throughout the day.

Corey Posner, a former Habonim Dror madrich from Melbourne was able to create a strong bond with the Arava community whilst there: - “I established a great connection with the Israeli chanichim (kids)

and madrichim. It was a real privilege to lead a camp in Israel which was fun and totally different from running one in Australia.”

During their free time the Aussies enjoyed moshav life on Ein Yahav as well as additional activities, such as; tours, encounters with people from the Arava and daily life with their adoptive families.

Aimee Raitman former youth movement participant and Flying Fox buddy found the relationship between the people and the

environment inspiring: - “I was so excited to visit the Arava for the first time. We have been taken on amazing tours of the desert and moshav with local tour guides, and I have gained such an appreciation for the natural environment here, and the way in which scarce natural resources are used to the advantage of the agricultural community here. ” Havah Klajn, a former Hineni madricha, has loved being back in the Arava after spending a month there as part of her Hineni shnat experience. “Everyone is warm and hospitable, with a really strong sense of community. The moshavim are really closeknit and it’s been amazing getting to be a part of that and leading in the camp.”

Over the years, the Australia Arava Partnership has facilitated various delegations between the communities – including youth and students, to professional and special interest groups.

Each of these visits has strengthened the bonds between people, created personal relationships and enriched the respective communities’ cultures.

Arava Australia Partnership National Coordinator Stacy Hayman said: “There is no text book experience that can create a personal connection to Israel as honestly, strongly and genuinely as simply being in Israel. The madrichim managed to bring a little piece of Australia to the camp which was an incredible and unforgettable experience. ” The AAP is currently recruiting for 3 Research Interns for a unique 4 – 6 month internship at the world-class Research and Development Centre in the Central Arava, commencing December 2018.

UK Labour Divided & Behind in the Polls: Corbyn Refuses Definition on Anti-Semitism MICHAEL DANBY MHR MELBOURNE PORTS You wouldn’t hardly know it in Australia, but for the last month Britain has been transfixed by the renewed row over Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn’s failure to address rampant anti-Jewish bigotry in UK Labour. Corbyn’s executive proposed to water down the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) widely accepted definition of antiSemitism. Worse, since then, have appeared of him images of him in Tunisia laying a wreath in a graveyard where terrorists who perpetrated the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics.

Corbyn has: - Refused to attend two regular weekly meetings of the Parliamentary Labour Party in the House of Commons where his critics were to move the full IHRA definition of antiSemitism. (https://www.independent.co.uk/ news/uk/politics/antisemitism-definition-labourparty-jeremy-corbyn-jewish-holocaust-ukparliament-a8460796.html - Refused to front a media conference to answer questions on anti-Jewish racism, although he rolled his eyes. (https://metro.co.uk/2018/08/15/ jeremy-corbyn-rolls-eyes-asked-laid-wreathterrorists-grave-7840451/) - Refused to meet with the leadership of the UK Jewish community over the IHRA antiSemitism definition. Naturally, the UK Jewry insist that Labour not make decisions about antiSemitism without consulting them. (“Where is Jeremy Corbyn?” President of the British Board of Deputies van der Zyl asked) In Britain Corbyn’s anti-Jewish leaning is not a boutique issue. It is on the front page of every newspaper and in the lead item of many TV bulletin. With the Tories tearing each other apart over Brexit, UK Labour should be 20 points ahead in the opinion polls. Instead, one poll shows Corbyn 4 points behind Teresa May. Israel may be unnaturally unpopular in the UK, but the British public are confounded by the far left/Jeremy Corbyn’s failure to resolve this anti-Semitism row

Deputy Labour party leader Tom Watson has says his party will “disappear into a vortex of eternal shame” unless is resolves the definition and action over anti-Semitism in UK Labour (https://www.theguardian.com/ politics/2018/aug/04/tom-watson-labourantisemitism-eternal-shame ). He has demanded that his ‘leader’ Corbyn: - Adopt without equivocation the internationally accepted IHRA definition of anti-Semitism - Drop the charges against the two MPs who had the temerity to criticize Corbyn publically over the issue (one of them against Dame Margaret Hodge had been dropped in the meantime).

- Ruthlessly apply the full weight of the IHRA and expel hundreds of far left activists who have attached themselves to UK Labour and who rabbit on about the ‘Rothschild’s Banks’, the ‘Zionists controlling the media’ and comparing

Israel to the Nazis.

Fortunately there is a great deal of pushback to Corbyn’s stance. The Guardian and the BBC, although trenchant critics of Benjamin Netanyahu, have been like the rest of the British Media outraged at Corbyn’s uncivilised behaviour.

No wonder the British Home Secretary Saiid Javid has called for Corbyn to resign. He has been joined now by former Labour PM Gordon Brown who says Corbyn must modify Labour’s stance and agree to the full definition of antiSemitism. While Corbyn’s far left army of trolls has responded violently on social media to this exposure of their man, three major British trade unions (who hold two thirds of the delegates at the British Labour Conference) have repudiated Corbyn. They insist that he and his office adopt the full IHRA definition of anti-Semitism. But no, Seumas Milne, Corbyn sinister Svengali has said the he will “die on a hill” rather than let his leader moderate and agree to IHRA definition of anti-Semitism. crisis-1.468136 ) It is heartening to see the British Jewish community standing as one, standing up the extremists who run Corbyn’s office. UK Jewry accused of being ‘trembling Israelites’ have coined a slogan to respond to Corbyn and Co – “ Enough is Enough” When the Parliament annually meets in September British Board of Deputies are upping the ante with a demonstration of solidarity in Manchester on September 14th when Parliamentary Labour will resume to demand Corbyn act firmly against this prejudice. Then at the meeting in the Commons I believe the majority of decent Labour MPs will revolt against Corbyn and Co. It is a common cliché that remains true as ever that “Jews are the canary coalmine: of the political mental health of any society. For what Corbyn portends for UK Jewry he portends for Britain generally, if G-d forbid he was to be elected. Robert Shrimsley’s insight in his column in the London Financial Times explains: “The row, offers a broader lesson about the nature of Mr Corbyn’s party. After all, you have to admire the excruciating purity of the leader and his acolytes. Here we have a government imploding over Brexit. An early election is at least possible.

And what does Mr Corbyn do? He embarks on a fresh dispute about anti-Semitism… His party is in touching distance of power, yet he is ready to risk it all for the purity of his ideals… Mr Corbyn’s views should be taken literally. Voters should take at his word a man whose world view is underpinned by anti-Americanism, who wants to scrap the nuclear deterrent and leave NATO. They should assume that invaluable US intelligencesharing arrangements will be scrapped. those hoping that political or financial realities will temper Mr Corbyn’s actions should look at the extent he is prepared to damage his party over the definition of anti-Semitism and recognise that what you see is likely to be what you get.”

Chabad Brisbane Celebrates 20 Years CHABAD BRISBANE

Chabad Brisbane celebrated its 20th anniversary on Rosh Chodesh Elul with a Gala Dinner held at the Brisbane Airport Conference Centre.

The dinner, which was attended by over 120 supporters, friends and public figures, featured internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Yitzhak Yedid who played heart-rending and uplifting Chassidic melodies.

Respected lawyer, author and artist Robert Kremnizer delivered a meaningful talk on on the topic of the month of Elul and the importance of maintaining a state of joy at all times.

Chabad Brisbane also unveiled plans to IY”H set up a local branch of the international Chabad on Campus and YJP (Young Jewish Professionals) within the coming months.

The MC for the event was ‘Outback’ Rabbi Ari Rubin, Chabad emissary to North Queensland, who was among the many

honoured guests who converged upon Brisbane, to enhance the evening, from the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Melbourne and Sydney.

Several of Chabad Brisbane’s major donors were recognised and honoured, being presented with a special bilingual Australia and New Zealand edition of the Tanya.

Catering was done in-house with exquisite deserts prepared by Shula Saranga.

The evening concluded with an entertaining auction of various beautiful pieces of art by prominent Brisbane Jewish artists and was conducted by auctioneer Michael Cohen Esq Chabad Brisbane avails itself of this opportunity to express its deep thanks and sincere appreciation to each and every one of its supporters and friends, partners and stake-holders in the successful growth of its activities to prepare for the ultimate Geulah (redemption) NOW!

Dedication Of The Australian Jewish War Memorial & Commemoration Of General Sir John Monash’s Knighthood ACT JEWISH COMMUNITY The first ever national Australian Jewish War Memorial was unveiled on Sunday 12 August 2018 commemorating the 341 Jewish servicemen who died serving Australia during war. The cenotaph, located at the National Jewish Memorial Centre in Canberra, was unveiled by His Excellency the GovernorGeneral of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove, and Lady Cosgrove. The dedication service was attended by the Chief of the Australian Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, as well as by members of the ADF, rabbinate, Jewish ex service community and the diplomatic corps.

The dedication of the cenotaph was followed by the unveiling of a portrait of General Sir John Monash that will permanently hang in the National Jewish Memorial Centre. The portrait was commissioned by the ACT Jewish Community from local artist Margaret Hadfield.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s message celebrated Sir John Monash as one of Australia’s greatest military commanders, and was read by Mr Julian Leeser MP: “The many Jewish Australians who have served and who have given their lives to protect this nation and its people are deserving of this memorial. It is out of a love of Australia that Jewish sons and daughters would place their

lives in peril so that we may all live in peace and security”.

The special portrait of Sir John Monash was unveiled by their Excellencies, Sir Peter and Lady Lynne Cosgrove.

ACT Jewish Community Host Rabbi Shimon Eddi reflected: “Judaism is a communal religion. While many countries prevented Jews from practicing our religion freely and openly, we are free to do so in Australia. Jews have volunteered when the call came, as they were loyal to their country”.

Rabbi Eddi also noted: “There is no such thing as religion in a foxhole, there are only brothers and sisters united against a common enemy in times of war”.

Wreaths were laid at the Memorial by the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, General Campbell, members of the Federal and ACT governments, members of the Australian Jewish Community, and other distinguished guests.

This event marked the culmination of the Centenary of Anzac Jewish Program, as well as the realisation of the vision of ACT Jewish Community founding members to honour the memory of Australia’s fallen Jewish servicemen on its grounds.

Changing Direction RABBI JAMES KENNARD The Talmud’s image of “three books that are opened on Rosh Hashana” is wellknown. We are told that those “whose good deeds outweigh their sins” are “tzadikkim” – saints - and are inscribed immediately in the Book of Life; those whose “sins outweigh their good deeds” are “rasha’im” – wicked – and areinscribed immediately for death, and the “intermediates” whose sins and good deeds are exactly balanced, wait until Yom Kippur. If by that time they have performed Teshuva– i.e. repented – then they make it into the Book of Life.

Rav Yitzhak Hutner (1906-1980) raised a number of questions on this simple understanding of the Talmudic idea. Are we to understand that an individual’s status is constantly in flux, in a situation where one good deed could take one from the class of rasha’im into the class of tzadikkim and one sin can transform the opposite transformation?

In this way, a person could change from being worthy of the Book of Life to being worthy of the Book of Death and back again, several times a day?

Surely such a crucial issue as one’s standing in the heavenly court is more permanent than this?

We should also be surprised that it is the act of Teshuva alone that can an “intermediate” into the Book of Life in time for Yom Kippur. If one good deed is all that is needed to tip the scales, then surely any such mitzva will suffice.

Lighting Shabbat candles, learning a little extra Torah, or a simple act of kindness should do the trick. What is the special significance of repentence?

In answer to these questions, Rav Hutner gives us a new perspective on what it is to be a Tzadik, and what

the act of Teshuva really entails.

He suggests that a Tzadik is not necessarily one whose deeds outweigh their sins (which are impossible for us to measure and quantify anyway), but one whose natural inclination is to do good. Faced with the myriad of choices or major and minor dilemmas which we encounter every day, a tzaddik is one who is more likely than not to make the choice in the right direction, even if they occasionally err and go the wrong way.

Their fate is to be inscribed in the Book of Life.

Similarly, a rasha is one who is inclined to choose the path which is contrary to the Torah, even if, from time to time, they are inspired to make the right decision, and they are destined for the Book of Death.

Therefore the “intermediate” category is the one in which most of us fall – sometimes we make the right choice and sometimes we do not, without a particular inclination either way. The path to the Book of Life for such people does not lead through one extra mitzva or even many such deeds – but is achieved by a change in inclination.

This is Teshuva.

“Repentance” is a poor translation for Teshuva. Teshuva is more than “saying sorry” and more than even a genuine regret for the deeds that we have committed. The word Teshuva comes from the root meaning “to return” because the act of Teshuva is a return to the person that each of us could be, if only we tried. Each of us could be a tzadik, who makes the effort to determine the right decision in each circumstance – at home, at work, in company and when alone. Teshuva is more than a regret for the past, it is a change of direction for the future.

May each one of us make that change, and may we be inscribed in the Book of Life.

September is to Remember REMEMBER SEPTEMBER BEN WILHEIM, FOUNDER Just under 3,000 people in Australia unfortunately lost their lives to Pancreatic Cancer in 2017. With only 8% of people diagnosed surviving five years from diagnosis and the average survival being 3-6 months, it is known to be one of the most aggressive forms of cancer as it usually isn’t found until it is too advanced and too late. Despite having one of the lowest survival rates (that has only improved marginally in the past 40 years) and being the 5th most common cause of cancer death, Pancreatic Cancer research only receives less than 1% of all cancer funding in Australia. It is officially the cancer of our generation and it’s about time this improves!

In September 2014, Ben and David Wilheim’s father, Danny, lost his nine-month battle to the disease. This wasn’t long after losing their first cousin, Danielle, who survived just six-weeks from her own diagnosis in 2012.

Ben vowed to make a difference. In July 2014, when Danny was sick, Ben gave up all liquids except water for 40 days to raise money for much-needed Pancreatic Cancer research.

He raised just under $16,000 and ‘Remember September’ was officially born in 2015.

Since then, Remember September has continued to grow exponentially and has raised a total of $135,000 and a lot of awareness in an attempt to change the future of the insidious disease.

This year Remember September has big plans again; aiming to hit the $200,000 checkpoint with a team of over 100 participants of the challenge! All funds raised go directly to the Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, who has a mission to “break through 40 years of

Danny, David and Ben Wilheim no progress by doubling the number of people who survive Pancreatic Cancer by 2020.”

“Remember September is about making a much-needed difference to this world, one step at a time,” Ben said. “It’s about encouraging positive lifestyle changes, motivating the start of a conversation, being aware of the symptoms and raising funds to help others and their families who are, or unfortunately will, suffer from the same disease my Dad, my cousin and my family have suffered through. I think [Dad] would be really proud. Remember September is a way of honouring his memory.

I just think about his massive smile.”

With Pancreatic Cancer statistics remaining unchanged for so long, Ben and David encourage everyone to get involved!

Life is a Highway ST KILDA HEBREW CONGREGATION YAAKOV GLASMAN “Life is a Highway” is more than just a popular song which won its author the Juno award for best single of the year in 1992. This famous chorus which topped the Canadian music charts and catapulted Tom Cochrane into international stardom (not that he was doing too badly beforehand) can also be seen as a philosophy in living. Like when first learning to drive, we stop and start, hesitant and unsure quite how to reach our destination, so too in life we are often challenged with those sharp turns and unexpected bumps that make it difficult to meet the goals we set out to achieve.

But all too often life’s bumps and potholes are not the result of externally imposed problems or of relationships gone wrong. They may well be a product of our own errors and mistakes. We can’t always blame it on our boss, our spouse, our kids,

our health or any other factor aimed at vindicating the acts we commit or the words we utter. “There is no righteous person on earth who does only good and never sins” King Solomon reminds us in Kohelet. Mistakes are symptomatic of the human condition and it’s not a question of if, but when and how often, we err. We can of course minimize the number of mistakes we make by simply thinking before we speak and act, but we will always make errors in judgement just as mankind has done since the dawn of civilisation - think Adam’s sin with the Tree of Knowledge.

The human proclivity to sin raises a fascinating question. Our Sages teach that prior to the creation of the world G-d consulted the Torah (figuratively speaking) and asked it what it thinks about the idea of creating man. The Torah exclaimed: “Why would you want to create man when there are times he will sin before you?!” to which G-d responded “Is it for nothing that I am called compassionate and slow to anger?!

Before I created the world I created Teshuva (Repentance)!”

Mistakes are a part of life, but rectifying them is an option never closed to us. In the soul stirring piece we recite on Rosh Hashana, “Unetane

Tokef”, we quiver as we read the words which articulate the possible outcomes for the year ahead. Who will live and who will die? Who will have peace and who will be tormented? Who will be prosperous and who impoverished? The angels tremble as even they are not guiltless before G-d. But with all the doom and gloom, the final words are as relieving as they are uplifting: “But repentance, prayer and charity annul the harsh decree!” Repentance, or Teshuva, is like a “shield in the face of punishment”, as our Sages state in Ethics of Our Fathers. It is a gateway through which we can re-enter our past and fix it for the better. It is our ability to transcend time and reconnect with G-d. Through Teshuva, we can right the wrongs of the past and set new goals for the future, glossing over the bumps and potholes on the highway of life and paving the way for the positive journey ahead.

But for Teshuva to become a reality in our lives we must want to change - it doesn’t happen on its own. Coming to shule on Rosh Hashana creates the environment in which Teshuva can be achieved but ultimately we need a wake up call to actually achieve it - and that wake up call is the sobering sound of the shofar as it emanates from

the ram’s horn, the symbol evoking memories of the ram Abraham sacrificed in substitute of his dear son Isaac in the gripping story of our first Patriarch.

But perhaps the symbolism of the shofar runs even deeper. Its shape, narrow at one end and wide at the other, gives us a message of hope.

Even when life seems difficult at one end, narrow and constrained by the mistakes we’ve made and the people we’ve hurt, we realize that at the other end there is an opening of forgiveness and hope, of a brighter future that lies ahead.

As one of my congregants once shared with me about that highway we drive on called life: the road ahead is seen through a windscreen the width of the car, but looking back requires only a rear view mirror the size of a small envelope.

There is indeed time for reflection on the past so we can learn from our mistakes and avoid repeating in the future, but this is a very small space compared to the bright future that awaits us on that very special highway. May we merit a year of health, happiness and true peace in our holy land of Israel. Shanah Tova.

Dr. Sue Morris strides across the room, engaging us with her quick wit and lively lecturing style as she regales the tale of Liam. A hypothetical individual who illustrates the concept of suboptimal thinking, Liam has texted his date after what he thinks was a great night, but receives no response. Assuming the worst -- that he did something wrong and will be forever alone -- his day spirals into a heap of TV and sadness.

Of course, there were other reasons for perhaps why his date did not respond immediately, but he leapt to negative conclusions and wasted his day on the couch. Why? And how many times have you done the same in response to other setbacks in life? Dr. Morris gave us a fitting lesson in how our brains are less clever than we think them, and what we can do about it.

Dr. Morris teaches at UNSW, where “[her] job is to make students the best versions of themselves,” and has also worked with lecturers to improve engagement with their students. Dr. Morris has received many accolades in her field for excellence in teaching, but her latest achievement lies in the literary realm: her new book, The Rubber Brain: A toolkit for optimising

Being somewhat slow on the evolutionary uptake, they remain hardwired to look for danger, be on the alert, and use heuristics, or shortcuts, which lead to rapid assumptions about our world. Such activities were helpful when we inhabited caves and hunted while being hunted,

but are less useful today, when the most dangerous aspect of our survival is driving to the store for groceries. These habits of the brain lead to “suboptimal thinking,” the kind that prevents us from reaching our goals, achieving a sense of well being, and becoming the best version of ourselves.

As with the example of Liam, we tend to see the negative, rather than consider other possibilities for our setbacks.

Learning to retrain our brain to be more resilient in the face of challenges -- that is, to bounce back, or perhaps deflect the shrapnel of a negative experience -- is a step towards improved well being and a happier, healthier life.

Dr. Morris’s talk offered a plethora of useful tips for training our brains to think more optimally, and was an excellent way to start what I hope will be a successful semester for all of us! Life saving defibrillators secured for the community QUEENSLAND JEWISH BOARD OF DEPUTIES Queensland’s Jewish community has taken delivery of five new life saving Cardiac Science G5 defibrillators for use at its synagogues and Brisbane’s Gan Gani Kindergarten, thanks to the generosity of the Pelerman Foundation and coordination by the Queensland Jewish Board of Deputies (QJBD) and welfare body JCareQld. The project to install the defibrillators was initiated by Professor David Abramson, from the South Brisbane Hebrew Congregation, who said the units would be invaluable if there was an incident at one of the community’s key venues.

“The first 10 minutes can be the difference between surviving a major cardiac event and not, so now we have a defibrillator at hand we can be prepared,” Professor Abramson said.

In addition to generous support from the Pelerman Foundation, received through welfare organisation JCareQld, each organisation matched the funding to cover the costs of the units.

Organisations that now have new defibrillators include Gan Gani Kindergarten, Brisbane Chevra Kadisha, Temple Shalom Gold Coast, South Brisbane Hebrew Congregation and the Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation.

QJBD President, Paul Myers, gratefully acknowledged those organisations that accepted the opportunity to purchase a defibrillator and thanked Real First Aid who provided a significant discount.

“This is a great example of how the Jewish community in South East Queensland can work together towards a common goal,” Myers said.

“Our synagogue facilities are used for services and a wide variety of functions, attended by many members of the community and Gan Gani is a key source of Jewish education in our community. We genuinely hope these defibrillators won’t need to be used, but having them there is a great comfort.”

The defibrillator units can be used by anyone, regardless of training. The unit gives clear instructions on what to do, and only delivers a shock if required.

Looking through Ted’s camera from another angle

BY TIBOR WEISZ (DR TED TODD) I was always a curious, restless child.

No wonder, Hungarian Jewish born at the worst time in history -the Holocaust, which was followed by Stalin’s communist regime. Myself and my mother, stepfather and 3 year old brother escaped from Stalinist Hungary in 1956 after the Hungarian revolution. At 15 years old I spent nearly a year in refugee camps in Austria.

Eventually we got lucky and finished up in Sydney in 1957. There I worked in factories doing all kinds of jobs to get by…making butcher blocks, metal chairs, cutting hot rubber for shoes, selling chocolate, squeezing orange juice and picking grapes in Mildura. Eventually, I got into selling cameras and in 1971 I started Ted’s Camera Stores in Melbourne.

I have much curiosity about what makes the world, individuals and myself tick. Psychology and philosophy were and are a major interest of mine and I have worked in the field of human relationships education and counseling at the CairnMillar Institute for 33 years.

Around the age of 50, with many

emotional aches and confusion as to where my life was at, I wanted to reinvent some of myself, so after the sale of my business I concentrated on education.

I gained a Bachelor of Arts in Literature & Philosophy, and a Graduate Diploma of Human Relationships Education. This

was followed by many short courses, further travel and exploration of the world as my interest grew in writing. Finally, I completed a PhD (Literature/Creative writing) and managed to find a wonderful new relationship with my partner, after my 25-year marriage broke down.

I am now officially a ‘writer’ - although I also have many other interests. Most of what I write is at least partly personal; and my heart is in my first novel, “A Doubtful Inheritance” a book that was part of the work for my PhD. The novel is partly biographical, but mainly fiction. Bitterly I say, when asked that all the bad stuff in the book is true and all the good stuff is fiction. It is not directly a holocaust story, but it is about a child of the holocaust… the migrant, the uprooted and unwanted citizen and a story about how such people make their way through relationships and careers. We all get an “INHERITANCE” sometimes it’s money, and other things we barely even know about.

My new book, “50 Something Male Looking for a Woman”, about to be launched and is fiction but built on true stories. It is a rollicking good read that reveals what men and women do when they find themselves single again after a long marriage. Life moves so fast. There is neither going back or redoing. The past is just a narrative fiction and the future is one yet to be written.

Supporting our future this Kol Nidre UIA CARLI DVASH Keren Hayesod - United Israel Appeal (KHUIA) is a unique organisation with the ability to scale up and answer the imminent needs of the People of Israel.

For nearly 100 years, KH-UIA has never strayed from its core work being support for our people. A Truly New Year RABBI DANIEL RABIN The scent of that new car, the shine on those new shoes and the delicateness we display when removing our latest phone from its packaging. I have always been fascinated by the extreme care people take with newly purchased goods.

When I lived in New York I recall once seeing a young man walking through the bustling streets of Manhattan with his quite obviously newly purchased boots. He was manoeuvring around the people, dodging any object in his pathway as if he was participating in a military obstacle course. It seemed his mission brief was to avoid any possibility of allowing anything other than air come in contact with the fine leather covering his feet. Alternatively

some may have thought he was auditioning for a starring position in the latest ‘Lord of the Dance’ musical.

What is it about something new that warrants such behaviour? What makes us become ‘shoe police’ guarding our newest ‘assets’ from any scratch inducing entities ?

When we had our first child, I remember observing the other new parents standing with me at the maternity ward, smiling endlessly at their new bundles of joy. The innocence, purity and fresh start of our newborns brought happiness and warmth to all our hearts.(Yes, it also brought with it a momentary freak out realising we were now parents!).

For us as human beings, something new, I believe, represents something unaltered, something in its original state. It reminds us, albeit subconsciously, of something we have long missed. As we continue on through life’s journey we begin to wear. We start to age and the excitement and care of something ‘new’

unfortunately slowly fades away.

Judaism’s response to this phenomenon is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year or Head of the Year.

Yet Rosh Hashanah is not just the start of a new year.

It is not just a time when we take down our old calendar and hang up the brighter and glossier new one.

Rosh Hashanah is the day on which Adam and Eve, the first people were created and it marks the anniversary of their creation.

The Kabbalah teaches that every year on Rosh Hashanah a similar spiritual state that existed at the time of their creation comes to the world once more. Each of us, in a spiritual sense, is given the energy of that newness. We are given the opportunity to reconnect to our inner-self and attach to our internal essence.

It is a time for us to realign body and soul and tap into the ‘Pintele Yid’, that tiny spark inside that never quits - the flame of our Jewishness

This year on Rosh Hashanah let us view the two holy days as a time when we can truly resolve to approach the upcoming year with the pureness of a newborn child. Let us resolve to embrace the year with resolutions that will turn the upcoming year into one in which we grow spiritually, where we spend meaningful time with our friends and family and where we ensure to reconcile the unnecessary conflicts and grudges we may still harbour.

Let this year be a year that will never be forgotten.

Walk down the street this Rosh Hashanah with a feeling that far surpasses that of wearing new shoes, a feeling that our body and soul are refreshed and inspired to greet the year with open arms! With blessings of a year filled with health, happiness, wealth and prosperity for ourselves, our families and the entire world!

An Ear to Listen RABBI RALPH GENENDE OAM

The Chinese call it living in interesting times, the Jews call it living in mishiga times – floods and fires, earthquakes, droughts and disasters, wars, terror on the streets and untold human suffering. We’re like the man sitting on the deck of the Titanic with a glass of whisky saying “I know I asked for ice, but this is ridiculous!”

Our times are as confounding as those early days when Cain turned on his brother Abel with a vicious vengeance, hitting him here, drawing blood there, until he discovers how to kill. What turned Cain against Abel?

Resentment, rivalry, jealousy? Or was it something more sinister, something more malignant in the human heart that turns brother against brother, husband against wife, and neighbour against neighbour.

Our rabbis provide the answer: “Cain spoke to his brother. And when they were in the field he killed him”. Cain had words with his brother but there was no conversation, there was no dialogue (no reply is recorded), there was no listening. He spoke, but did not listen. He spoke, but did not hear. As Bob Dylan put it back in 1963: “How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?” When we fail to listen we fail one of the most basic lessons of being truly

human. So Cain creates a perfect storm of conflict, a breakdown of communication; this is the heart of darkness.

Gary Peer may rightly tell us that it’s all about location, location, location but the Torah says it’s also about communication, communication, communication!

It’s not for nothing one of the most critical words in Jewish prayer and life is Shema Israel, Shema Kolenu, Shema Koli.

It’s not by chance that the most wellknown mitzvah of Rosh Hashanah is to hear the Shofar. We aren’t a visual culture; we’re an auditory one, a hearing people.

It’s no surprise that Freud, a Jew, invented psychology, the listening cure. I know I have done my best work as a rabbi, not by giving

Secondly, the MBD recently approved all the short-term goals recommended by its sub-committee for the Geirus Review, July 2018.

focus on the emotional wellbeing of candidates 2. Clarity around testing and clear communication 3. Background knowledge of all candidates to be formally considered 4. Target response time of 48 hours for communications as a KPI overseen by the MBD Board The MBD Board will shortly review the mid-term recommendations made by the Geirus Review, July, 2018.

Keeping Their Voice Alive THE SYDNEY JEWISH MUSEUM

The Sydney Jewish Museum is indebted to the Holocaust survivors who founded the Museum and continue to tell their stories of survival to adult and student visitors. In fact, visitors consistently report that the most moving component of their visit to the Museum is their exposure to the testimony of a survivor.

For 25 years the Sydney Jewish Museum has helped educate hundreds of thousands of school children and adults on lessons in personal responsibility, respect and mutual understanding through the lens of the Holocaust, and on the need to keep the light of humanity bright.

The stories of the Holocaust survivors are central to the Museum’s ongoing mission of education, preservation and commemoration. They are the threads that link the Museum’s contemporary messages of humanity, democracy and justice to the history that we pledge to never forget.

There are opportunities throughout the calendar year for adult visitors to hear survivors talk. Every day student groups hear the testimonies of survivors, after which they are invited to ask questions about their experiences of persecution, loss and migration.

These are unforgettable moments that transcend time and place, which visitors

are inspired by long after they leave the Museum.

However, as time passes, fewer Holocaust survivors are left to tell their stories. The Museum continues to work tirelessly to ensure that the survivors’ stories are captured for the benefit of future generations through projects such as testimony recording, the development of the interactive app SJM Voices, and publishing memoirs via the Museum’s Community Stories department. These components of the Museum’s offerings to visitors continue to deliver moving experiences, particularly in the absence of survivors.

Head of Clinical Diabetes at Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Professor Jonathan Shaw has received one the country’s most prestigious diabetes research prizes.

Professor Shaw was presented with the Australian Diabetes Society’s (ADS) Kellion Award at the Society’s annual scientific meeting in Adelaide on Thursday, 23 August where he delivered the Kellion Plenary Lecture.

The ADS Kellion Award, the highest scientific recognition of the Australian Diabetes Society, acknowledges an outstanding contribution in diabetes research, clinical or service areas.

Professor Shaw’s work has been instrumental in revealing the rapidly rising numbers of people with diabetes in Australia and around the world, improving methods of diagnosing diabetes, and in urging for responses by governments to facilitate the adoption of healthy lifestyles.

He also initiated the use of Australia’s national diabetes register (the largest national register in the world) as a tool to understand diabetes, revealing links between diabetes and cancer, as well as the effects of early onset type 2 diabetes on shortening life expectancy.

Professor Shaw said: “I am greatly honoured to join the list of eminent researchers who have received the Kellion Award in previous years, but my achievements are only as a result of the support of mentors, colleagues and family”.

Australian Diabetes Society CEO, Dr Sof Andrikopoulos, said: “This is the highest and most prestigious award of the

ADS and Jonathan is a worthy recipient.

He has made a significant contribution to diabetes in Australia and we congratulate him on this achievement”.

About Professor Shaw: Professor Shaw underwent his clinical and research training in the UK. At the Baker Institute, he runs a large research section focussing on epidemiology and clinical research in diabetes, and is also a consultant physician in the diabetes services.

He has authored over 400 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 35 book chapters.

Among his many roles, he is the Chair of the National Diabetes Expert Advisory Group; Lancet Diabetes Commissioner (2016-2018); a member of the International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas Committee since 2005; was Head of the Baker Institute’s World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Diabetes (2013-2017) and is PastPresident of the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group.

Professor Shaw has received many notable awards including the global Novartis Diabetes Award for research in 2006; the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group Peter Bennett award in 2011 and the Australian Diabetes Society’s Jeff Flack Diabetes Data Award in 2015.

He was listed in the Clarivate 2017 Highly Cited Researchers, for being in the top 1.0% most highly cited authors across all areas of science over ten years, and in 2014, he was included in the Thomson Reuters The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.

A Jabotinsky Zionist Reply To Ronald Lauder MOSHE PHILLIPS

Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, following up his March 18 New York Times (“Israel’s Self-Inflicted Wounds”) https:// www.nytimes.com/2018/03/18/opinion/israel70th-anniversary.html tirade against Israeli settlers and several other targets doubled down with a second op-ed in the Times on August 13 with an attack on Orthodox Jewish influence on Israeli politics (“Israel, This Is Not Who We Are”) https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/13/opinion/ israel-ronald-lauder-nation-state-law.html.

Many opponents of Lauder’s views on Israel have taken pen in hand and pointed out where they believe Lauder went wrong in each of his articles. Other authors attacked Lauder for what they (correctly) saw as his hypocritical claim that “democratic and egalitarian dimensions of the Jewish democratic state are being tested” when he was not elected to his position as president of the WJC in a general election of its membership. He has been president of the organization for over 11 years and it seems he faces no term limits.

Let us examine the Zionist leader Ze’ev Jabotinsky who perhaps to most, if not nearly all, American Jews was the least recognizable name in the pantheon of important heroes from early Zionist history mentioned in Lauder’s essay.

Lauder wrote “Theodor Herzl, Chaim Weizmann, Zeev Jabotinsky, David Ben Gurion and Golda Meir always emphasized the need to combine Jewish nationalism with universal

humanism. So now, when Israel’s government appears to be tarnishing the sacred value of equality, many supporters feel it is turning its back on Jewish heritage, the Zionist ethos and the Israeli spirit.”

Thanks are due to Lauder for rightfully ranking Jabotinsky where he belongs among the builders of Zionism and the Jewish State.

Jabotinsky (1880-1940) was a Zionist leader, orator, and writer who founded the Jewish Legion during World War One as well as the Haganah self-defense units in Jerusalem in 1920. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s father Benzion served as Jabotinsky’s personal secretary just after the outbreak of World War Two. In the May 15, 1981 edition of the Jewish journal Sh’ma, Professor Daniel J. Elazar, a noted political science scholar, recalled

Jabotinsky’s legacy and wrote: “Would there be serious public commemoration of the 100th birthday of Ze’ev Jabotinsky had it not been for the fact that the Likud won the election in Israel in 1977? Not likely. For thirty years and more, Jabotinsky was one of those non-persons in Israel and the Jewish world…. The ruling Labor Party made him a non-person for the same reasons that it portrayed Menachem Begin and his supporters as uncivilized fascists – it is easier to beat the opposition by painting it as irrelevant, intolerable and non-existent, until it is too strong to be dismissed.”

In the intervening elections the next generation of leaders including Ehud Olmert, Benny Begin, Tzipi Livni, Uzi Landau, Dan Meridor and many other central figures in Israel’s political life up until today (and by contrast J Street’s Jeremy

Ben-Ami) had a parent that was an active supporter of Ze’ev Jabotinsky and was involved with the Irgun paramilitary organization his followers created. It can be noted that Rahm Emanuel’s father too was an Irgunist.

What Jabotinsky would advocate given today’s current events is often debated in Israel.

It is a fair question to ask if Israel would even exist today if it were not for Jabotinsky and the sacrifices of the Irgun he molded and inspired.

That question would be impossible to ask, though, if Begin had never won power in 1977.

What were Jabotinsky’s vital contributions?

His words and ideas animated a generation of young Jews to resist the Nazis, rescue fellow Jews from Hitler’s forces, and fight for the freedom of Israel as soldiers in the Irgun and Stern Group/LEHI. Later, the movement for freedom Soviet Jewry both in the US and inside the USSR itself was led by Jabotinsky Zionists.

Since 1977 things have fundamentally changed in Israel: not only Menachem Begin’s Likud but also the National Union (HaIhud HaLeumi), Kadima and Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel is Our Home) parties have all connected themselves directly to the legacy of Jabotinsky as do several smaller parties. No party claims to continue in the tradition of David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister or his protege Golda Meir. Their secularism and socialism lost all its chic long ago. Perhaps Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu party made the most of invoking his name and attitude (even if that party is the least obvious in terms of its allegiance to Jabotinsky’s ideology) when it described itself as “a national movement with the clear vision to

Seven principles for maintaining Jewish dialogue JONATHAN SACKS We must work to listen to each other, to forgive each other, and to stick together, as the extended family we are.

We recently observed the Fast of Tammuz, and with it begins the period of mourning in the Jewish calendar called the Three Weeks, leading up to the saddest day in the year, the Ninth of Av. Twice Israel suffered defeat and exile.

The first — the conquest of the northern kingdom followed a century and a half later by the destruction of the First Temple and the Babylonian exile — was a direct consequence of the division of the kingdom into two after the death of Solomon. The second — defeat at the hands of the Romans and the destruction of the Second Temple — was the result of intense factionalism and internal strife, sinat chinam.

Today, across the Jewish world, there remains much internal conflict. When individual Jews or groups of Jews have disagreements, as inevitably happens, we have to find ways to overcome them respectfully, to ensure we continue to thrive as a people.

To that end, I have set out below what I regard as seven of the key principles for maintaining Jewish dialogue. I hope some, or all of them, speak to you.

PRINCIPLE 1: Keep talking, even when you disagree. The more you talk, the more you are likely to eventually find a way to work together.

PRINCIPLE 2: Listen deeply to one another.

Hear what your opponent is saying. Listening is profoundly therapeutic. It is also deeply spiritual. The good news about the Jewish people is that we’re among the world’s best

Shema Yisrael, the great command, means, “Listen, Israel.”

PRINCIPLE 3: Always be humble and modest by striving to understand the point of view with which you disagree. That was the way of Hillel. It remains the first rule of conflict management.

PRINCIPLE 4: Never seek victory. Never ever seek to inflict defeat on your opponents.

If you seek to inflict defeat on your opponent, your opponent – such is human psychology

– will seek to retaliate by inflicting defeat on you. The end result will be that even if you win today, you will lose tomorrow, and, in the end, everyone will lose. Don’t think in terms of victory and defeat. Think in terms of what is best for the Jewish people.

PRINCIPLE 5: If you show contempt for other Jews, they will show contempt for you.

If you show respect for other Jews, they will show respect for you. If you seek respect, give respect.

PRINCIPLE 6: Remember that the ultimate basis of Jewish peoplehood is “Kol Yisrael

Why Israel needs the Nation-State law JNS DR. MORDECHAI KEDAR

In order to understand the need for the new Nation-State law, we must understand the challenges to Israel’s existence in the Middle East.

Much has been published against the new Israeli Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People. Many, both in Israel and abroad, ask: Why is it necessary? How can it comport with democracy? Where does it leave minorities, particularly Muslim-Arabs, who make up some 20% of the Israeli population?

In order to understand the need for the new Nation-State law, we must understand the challenges to Israel’s existence in the Middle East. First of all, there is the religious aspect.

According to Islam, Judaism and Christianity are din al-batel (religions of falsehood) while only Islam is din al-haqq (religion of truth).

Judaism has been null and void ever since Islam came to the world, so there is no reason to establish a Jewish state.

In addition, according to Islam, Jews (and Christians) should live under Islamic rule as dhimmis (“protected as long as they behave according to the rules of Islam”) and “pay the Jizya out of hand while they are utterly subdued” (Koran 9:29). Thus, Jews have no right to a state, army, or police, and should live

in a state of perpetual humiliation at the mercy of Muslims.

Next is the national aspect. The fact that Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish People is rejected by all of Israel’s Arab neighbors without exception. Consider, for instance, Article 20 of the Palestinian National Charter, which says (with my interpretations in italics): “The Mandate for Palestine, and everything that has been based upon it” (international decisions to establish a Jewish State) “are deemed null and void. Claims of historical or religious ties of Jews with Palestine are incompatible with the facts of history and the true conception of what constitutes statehood” (there is no Jewish history in the Holy Land). “Judaism, being a religion, is not an independent nationality.

Nor do Jews constitute a single nation with an identity of its own; they are citizens of the states to which they belong.” (Therefore we Jews should leave our forefathers’ land and go back to Poland [Auschwitz], Germany [Dachau], Iraq, Morocco…)

The new law is meant to make it as clear as possible that the Jews are a nation. As the new law states, “The Land of Israel is the historical homeland of the Jewish people in which the State of Israel was established; the State of Israel is the national home of the Jewish people in which it fulfills its natural, cultural, religious and historical right to self-determination; and

the right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people.”

Just as Italy is the nation-state of the Italian people and France is the nation-state of the French people, Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish People.

There are, nevertheless, Israeli Jews who oppose the Nation-State Law for various reasons. The first is a political reason: Because many on the left side of the political map do not like Benjamin Netanyahu in general, they oppose everything he and his coalition do as a matter of course.

The more important reason is what has happened since the 1990s, when Aharon Barak was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Starting in 1992, Barak focused on advancing and shaping Israel’s Constitutional Revolution (a phrase he coined), preferring and advancing human rights at the expense of the Jewish character of the state.

The best example of this revolution was what happened with the Arab al-Ard Movement, the aim of which was to abolish Israel’s Jewish nature (i.e., subvert the State of Israel). AlArd tried to run for the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament) in 1965 but was rejected by the Supreme Court. Thirty-one years later, in 1996, the Supreme Court under Barak allowed the Balad party to run for Knesset although it had

arevim zeh bazeh”, “All Jews are responsible for one another”. We may not agree on anything, but we remain a single extended family. If you disagree with a friend, tomorrow he or she may no longer be your friend. But if you disagree with a family member, tomorrow he or she is still part of your family. Being a family is what keeps us together. We don’t need to agree with each other, but we do need to care about each other.

PRINCIPLE 7: God chose us as a people.

He didn’t choose only the righteous; He chose all of us. It is as a people we stand before God, and it is as a people we stand before the world. The world doesn’t make distinctions, anti-Semites don’t make distinctions. We are united by a covenant of shared memory, shared identity, and shared fate, even if we have differing perspectives on our faith.

The Sages said that the Torah was given to make peace in the world. How can we, the Jewish people or the State of Israel, be at peace with the world if we are unable to live at peace with ourselves? Bear this in mind the next time you are tempted to walk away from some group of Jews that you think has offended you. We are each called on to make some effort, some gesture, to listen to one another, to forgive one another, and to stay together as an extended, almost infinitely varied family. That is the only ultimate tikkun for the echoing grief of the Three Weeks that has haunted our history, and reverberates still.

Israel also has its share of multicultural acolytes who naturally oppose the law. When Israelis see the damage wrought on Europe by multiculturalism, they want to ensure that they are as far removed as possible from this destructive idea.

If Europeans are bent on committing cultural suicide, it is of course their prerogative to do so. But Israelis do not wish to lose their national identity, their ancestral homeland, their state, and their culture. The Nation-State Law is meant to ensure that Israel is not sacrificed on the very same altar on which Europe is committing suicide.

What could be meant by this “brave path?”

A strong national defense, national pride, connection to authentic Jewish observance, love of the Land of Israel, and belief in both free markets and modern democratic values.

In this limited space it is not possible to elaborate on all of the above.

A verse from one of Jabotinsky’s most beloved poems will do much to illustrate just how far Lauder stands apart from Jabotinsky:

Two Banks has the Jordan – This is ours and, that is as well.

From the wealth of our land there shall prosper The Arab, the Christian, and the Jew, For our flag is a pure and just one It will illuminate both sides of my Jordan.

And what timeless message did Jabotinsky have for Jews who question Jewish uniqueness?

Even in poverty a Jew is a prince Whether slave or vagabond beggar You have been created the son of kings Capped with the crown of (King) David.

Jabotinsky wrote his greatest novel about the Biblical champion Samson. In the most well-known passage of the book, Samson declares: “Tell them [the Jewish People] three things in my name, and not two: they must get iron [i.e. armaments]; they must choose a king; and they must learn to laugh.”

What Jabotinsky meant in part by “learn to laugh” was the necessary development of confidence on a national level. With rapidly changing Middle East realities and the abuse of self-proclaimed friends as Lauder Israelis may need that message now more than ever.

Or do they? After all, smart Israelis know that

Lauder’s name won’t ever make it into future Israeli history textbooks while Jabotinsky’s importance grows every year.

Postscript: For readers who want to know more about Jabotinsky one option is to read Lone Wolf: A Two-Volume Biography of Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky. Written by Shmuel Katz and published in 1996 it is a two-volume masterful work and is a breathtaking effort. So much information about Jabotinsky and his tremendous impact on Zionism is related that it causes a new appreciation of the man and his ideas to even those who thought they know who he was.

Corbyn to Zionists: Even if you’ve lived here all your life, you don’t get the English

At an event in 2013 to discuss the British legacy in Palestine, Jeremy Corbyn said the following: “The other evening we had a meeting in Parliament in which Manuel made an incredibly powerful and passionate and effective speech about the history of Palestine and the rights of the Palestinian people. This was dutifully recorded by the – the thankfully silent Zionists who were in the audience on that occasion and then came up and berated him afterwards for what he had said. They clearly have two problems: one is they don’t want to study history and secondly having lived in this country for a very long time, probably all their lives, they don’t understand English irony either.

Manuel does understand English irony and he uses it very very effectively.”

I think he meant that Zionists, even if they’ve lived in this country all their lives, aren’t really properly English. They don’t understand what the Englishers are really like. They don’t understand what they mean when they speak in their sophisticated English way.

It’s a good thing he said ‘Zionists’ and not ‘Jews’ because otherwise he might be accused of anti-Semitism. [Note. The last sentence was a rather clumsy attempt at irony].

No, you may say, he was talking about people with certain political commitments, he wasn’t talking about Jews as Jews so

this cannot be anti-Semitism. He was only talking about Zionists (in this usage of the word it is understood to mean racists, apologists for human rights abuses, proapartheid and Nazis).

But wait. The charge is one of an inability to understand English irony, in spite of having lived among real Englischers all your life. How is that related to a political identity?

Well, you say, Zionists aren’t really English because they themselves choose loyalty to a foreign nation rather than to Britain. So it is their own choice not to be properly English; not an anti-Semitic libel at all, but a choice to be disloyal to your own nation and to be loyal to a global and racist nation far away.

But no. Corbyn is enjoying the old sneery English view of Jews, and he’s doing it to humiliate the Jews that he’s talking about.

They live among us but they’re not really one of us. This actually isn’t Corbyn’s usual political anti-Semitism, although it originates in that well: this is a spill-over into ordinary old-fashioned English anti-Semitism. It is as if the political requirement to humiliate the Zionists just finds its words in the antiSemitic subconscious of the English middle class man.

Sometimes people say that hostility to Zionists cannot be anti-Semitic because many Zionists are not Jewish. Imagine if Corbyn had said this about a non-Jewish Zionist. Take for example the well known Zionist, Tony Blair. What sense would these words possibly have made in that context?

‘Blair has lived among us all his life, but still

doesn’t understand English irony.’ Corbyn would never say that because it wouldn’t mean anything. It wouldn’t key into any emotional order; it wouldn’t humiliate Blair, it would just sound weird.

Imagine if a politician had said this about a group of black people or a group of Muslims: that in spite of having lived in this country for all their lives, they were unable to understand English irony.

Incidentally, Corbyn’s word ‘dutifully’ is interesting too. And his ‘thankfully silent’ comment, before the later ‘berating’ of the speaker. Duty to what? Duty to a foreign power, duty to a global Israel lobby. What were they doing? They were recording a Labour back-bencher making an antiSemitic speech. They are the aggressors, Corbyn is the victim. Anti-Semites are always victims of Jews. Amazing that these un-Britischers could remain silent for so long; amazing that they had the chutzpah to criticise (‘berate’) the speaker afterwards; amazing that they had anything to say since they had studied no history.

So, supporter of Jeremy Corbyn. Do you now think that Corbyn sometimes slips into anti-Semitism? Or maybe it doesn’t count, because it’s been weaponised by the Daily Mail? Feel Corbyn’s angry contempt; the transcript doesn’t do it justice.

What are you going to say? You’re going to say it’s Fake News, old comments dredged up out of context. You’re going to say that he was talking about Zionists not Jews. You’re going to say it’s all smears

and lies. You’re going to say it’s a one off.

You’re going to say you don’t care because Corbyn’s good and I’m bad.

You’re going to resist connecting this incident to Corbyn’s claim that Hamas and Hezbollah are dedicated to peace, social justice and political justice; or Corbyn being paid £20,000 for fronting programmes for the anti-Semitic Iranian propaganda mouthpiece Press TV. You won’t connect it to Corbyn’s defence of conspiracist Steven Sizer, saying he was a victim of the Israel lobby. Oh, incidentally, you can see Sizer on the Daily Mail video just behind Corbyn. You remember Steven “9/11 Israel did it” Sizer, don’t you?

You won’t connect it to Corbyn’s defence of Raed Salah, the blood libler; to Corbyn’s honouring of the planners of the Munich Olympic murders; to Corbyn’s claim that UK Foreign Office is controlled by the Israel lobby. Need I go on?

No, I don’t need to go on. Because no matter how long I go on, it will make no difference. Jeremy Corbyn, like Donald Trump, cannot be harmed by new revelations. Because his supporters are so emotionally and psychologically invested in his basic goodness that there is literally nothing that could emerge that cannot be explained away.

St Kilda Shule believes that people seeking to convert to Judaism should be made to feel welcome and should be actively supported through their journey.

A recent review into the Melbourne Beth Din’s conversion program found that one of the main challenges faced by conversion candidates is the financial cost involved. The bulk of the cost lies in private tuition fees to cover the curriculum required for conversion.

To address this issue the report recommended that some parts of the curriculum be taught in group classes rather than in private classes, which would reduce tuition fees. We wholeheartedly support this recommendation and wish to demonstrate this in tangible terms. We therefore advise that: Should the Beth Din adopt the group-classes recommendation St Kilda Shule will offer these classes to any candidate free of charge.

In addition to reducing financial pressure, group classes will create an inclusive support network for candidates who are experiencing similar lifestyle changes. Additionally, our senior rabbi Yaakov Glasman will act as the candidates’ Rabbinic mentor (a requirement of the Beth Din) at no cost.

We believe that candidates must demonstrate a genuine commitment to Jewish knowledge and practice and when they do, Rabbi Glasman will meet with them regularly to support them through their conversion process.

Our Shule is making this commitment because we believe that those who are committed to becoming valued members of the Jewish community should be supported. We hope this initiative will contribute toward this goal.

Scopus students bring music to cancer patients MOUNT SCOPUS COLLEGE Mount Scopus College students brought music to patients receiving treatment for cancer at Box Hill Hospital.

Year 9 students, as part of their Community Project, have being visiting the hospital to play for patients in the Oncology Ward and Day Care Unit.

The students played a range of instruments including guitar, piano, clarinet, flute and keyboard and also sang for patients, and performed both group pieces and solos.

Student Bella Barolsky who plays the flute, piano and ukulele said, “We opened with Over the Rainbow and played a mixture of songs. When we played Hallelujah, one of the patients started singing along and it was great to know we had brightened someone’s day.”

The students prepared a variety of genres and also took requests from patients, with many of the nursing staff personally thanking them for making their day.

Elliott Herschberg, who plays keyboard said, “It was a really good experience and we learnt a lot as musicians, as well as helping to better the lives of others.”

The students showed incredible maturity, sensitivity and respect each time they visited, over the course of the school term.

They also acted as their own roadies, carrying, setting up and packing up all their own gear, and loading it into the bus from school to the hospital each time.

The Year 9 Community Project sees students develop their awareness of others

and take action through service in their community.

The project consolidates their learning in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and allows them to engage in a sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to service in the community.

While our talented musicians took their skills to Box Hill Hospital, others volunteered with the elderly at social and sporting activities, cleaning up their school and local community areas, cooking and preparing meals for those less fortunate and collecting goods to donate to those in need, as well as raising awareness and in many cases funds for the causes they had chosen. www.scopus.vic.edu.au

Renaissance of the Kew Community

SOUTH CAULFIELD SHULE The South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation recently began upgrading their children’s outdoor play area. Thanks to funds from Bendigo Bank and private donors the upgrade is planned to be completed before Rosh Hashana. This is part of a bigger plan to cater to younger families and have facilities appropriate and conducive to this demographic.

Over the High Holiday period attendees will enjoy the outdoor space plus a specially designated toddler room and teen space. A recent grant from the Glen Eira Council has allowed the Shule to purchase equipment for their newly formed South Side Youth Hub including pool table, table tennis and fooseball table.

KEW HEBREW CONGREGATION

The Kew Hebrew Congregation has been undergoing a renaissance. After a quiet period the Congregation is once again growing, active and a hub of meaningful spiritual experience.

Kew Shul is a vibrant, warm and friendly home for the entire family.

Tashlich, the Symbolic Casting Off of Sins On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Jews traditionally proceed to a body of running water, preferably one containing fish, and symbolically cast off their sins.

The Tashlich ceremony includes reading the source passage for the practice, the last verses from the prophet Micah (7:19), “He will take us back in love; He will cover up our iniquities. You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”

Selections from Psalms, particularly Psalm 118 and Psalm 130, along with supplications and a kabbalistic prayer hoping God will treat Israel with mercy, are parts of Tashlich in various communities.

History of Tashlich The custom developed around the 13th century and became widespread despite objections from rabbis who feared superstitious people would believe that tashlich, rather than the concerted effort of teshuvah, had the power to change their lives. Religious leaders were particularly opposed to the practice of tossing bread crumbs, representing sins, into the water, and even shaking one’s garments to loosen any evil clinging to them was discouraged.

Superstitious rites most likely did influence ceremony. Primitive people believed that the best way to win favor from evil spirits living in waterways was to give them gifts.

Some peoples, including the Babylonian Jews, sent “sin‑filled” containers out into the

water. (The Talmud describes the practice of growing beans or peas for two or three weeks prior to the new year in a woven basket for each child in a family. In an early variation of the Yom Kippur kaparot ritual, the basket, representing the child, was swung around the head seven times and then flung into the water.)

The Symbolism of Water To make the practice symbolic rather than superstitious, the rabbis gave it ethical meaning. Through Midrash, they connected the water with the Akedah, the binding of Isaac. When Abraham was on his way to sacrifice Isaac, they said, Satan (which could be understood as the voice inside

Abraham telling him not to kill his beloved son) tried to stop him. When Abraham refused to heed his voice, Satan became a raging river blocking Abraham’s way.

Abraham proceeded nevertheless. When the water reached his neck and he called out for God’s help, the waters immediately subsided.

Water was also seen as symbolic of the creation of the world and of all life. Kings of Israel were crowned near springs, suggesting continuity, like the King of Kings’ unending sovereignty. Since the prophets Ezekiel and Daniel each received revelation near a body of water, it was seen as a place to find God’s presence. As the element

of purification, water also represents the opportunity to cleanse the body and soul and take a new course in our lives. (Later rabbis continued to protest against the ritual, on grounds that it encouraged new sins by creating a social situation where people could gossip and men and women mingle, as Isaac Bashevis Singer’s story “Tashlich” illustrates.)

Although the rabbis preferred that Tashlich be done at a body of water containing fish (man cannot escape God’s judgment any more than fish can escape being caught in a net; we are just as likely to be ensnared and trapped at any moment as is a fish), since this is, after all, a symbolic ceremony, any body of water will do, even water running out of a hose or a faucet.

If the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, Ashkenazi Jews [Jews of European descent] do Tashlich on the second day (so as not to carry prayer books to the water, which would violate Sabbath laws). Sephardic Jews [Jews of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent] perform the ritual even on the Sabbath [as do a number of liberal Jews]. The ceremony can take place any time during the holiday season through Hoshanah Rabbah at the end of Sukkot.

Bialik College - leading the way into the new year BIALIK COLLEGE In the month leading up to Rosh Hashanah, Bialik students are challenged to engage in introspection and self-evaluation. All of the learning experiences around the Jewish New Year stem from the world of the students, creating an empathetic connection to the school’s values and to the festival itself.

Students are asked to think about personal growth in the coming year, about ideas like forgiveness and self-improvement and to ask themselves, ‘what can I do differently next year?’

In all year levels, students are given opportunities to fulfill the mitzvot and customs of Rosh Hashanah, within the school and the wider Jewish Community.

“The Jewish New Year is a time for students to make connections to customs and concepts of Rosh Hashanah” says Tali Barr-Waanders, Bialik’s Co-ordinator of Hebrew and Jewish Studies for Primary and Early Learning, “and they participate in cheshbon nefesh (self-reflection), listening to the shofar (the word comes from the Hebrew word shipur which means self-improvement) taking part in Tashlich(a custom to ‘throw away the bad deeds’) and attending a Seder Rosh Hashanah.” This learning takes place in a variety of ageappropriate ways.

In the ELC, younger students are introduced to the chag through role play and storytelling, whilst Primary students learn traditional New Year tefilot (prayers)

such as Avinu Malkeinu and listen to the shofar being blown every morning for the month of Elul.

In Years 4 and 5, students learn about chaggim and Jewish values through the lens of Leadership, Customs and Traditions.

The program for these upper Primary years is known as Manhig, Minhag V’Chag, which applies the individual customs for a specific chag to the corresponding leadership qualities or school values that can be linked to the holiday. The leadership quality of ‘Responsibility’ is closely tied to Rosh Hashanah and students explore what it means to have responsibility for their

Middle and Senior School students delve deeper into the meaning of Rosh Hashanah, working on New Year resolutions and reflecting on the ways they can forgive, grow and take responsibility in the next year.

Being a pluralist community, Bialik respects that families will celebrate the Jewish New Year in different ways, and so the College aims to teach students about the many different ways of celebrating Rosh Hashanah, providing a solid and informed foundation on which they can form their own opinions.

One of the more significant aspects of

Rosh Hashanah for Bialik, is that this is the time of year when there is a ‘changing of the guard’ in student leadership (Mazkirut).

The current Year 12 Mazkirut reflect on their tenure as a team, and discuss what can be improved upon with the incoming Year 11 group. At Bialik, mazkirut volunteer to lead the school reflecting the school’s culture that leadership is open to all students who want to give back to the school and is not a popularity contest. The new leaders are subsequently inducted as Mazkirut at the Senior School Rosh Hashanah assembly.

Shule’s generous conversion initiative ST KILDA HEBREW CONGREGATION One of Melbourne’s leading Shules has this week unveiled a generous initiative aimed at supporting conversion candidates through what can often be a challenging and expensive process.

A recent review into the Melbourne Beth Din’s conversion program carried out by the Rabbinical Council of Victoria and the Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Victoria, found that one of the main challenges faced by conversion candidates is the financial cost involved.

To address this issue the Orthodox councils recommended that some parts of the curriculum be taught in group classes rather than in private classes, which would reduce tuition fees. St Kilda Shule’s Board this week announced it not only agreed with this recommendation but wished to take it a step further by offering these group classes free of charge to any conversion candidate.

“Although Judaism is not a proselytising religion, if a person genuinely wishes to become Jewish they should be made to feel welcome and should be actively supported through their journey” said the Shule’s senior Rabbi Yaakov Glasman, who has backed the initiative. “We believe it will ease the financial burden

conversion process, has described her experiences in glowing terms.

Budding Scientists at King David THE KING DAVID SCHOOL Science Week at The King David School involved activities aimed at engaging students from Pre-School through to Year 12 in all matters of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths).

From forensics to astronomy, students were involved in hands on learning celebrating the history and future of Science. Budding engineers in Year 8 participated in the Aurecon Bridge Building competition where their bridge designs were load tested and assessed for visual appeal, workmanship, innovation, creativity and functionality.

Year 7 students designed model gliders applying their understanding of forces to the construction of their planes. The highlight was the “fly off” competition where the planes were tested for accuracy

and distance covered. At the Pre-School, King David’s youngest students has the opportunity to participate in a range of experiments laying the foundations for a lifetime of discovery and learning. The week culminated with a “pop up planetarium” installed in the multi-purpose hall where students visually experienced how our Earth and the solar system are interconnected.

Buzz of Activity YESHIVAH – BETH RIVKAH COLLEGES Rosh Hashanah activities and associated learning is well-underway at Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah. YBR Pre-Schools students at the Gurewicz Early Learning Centre and Primary students and Beth Rivkah and Yeshivah have enjoyed an informative and exciting visit from the Shofar factory, and shofar blasts are sounded across all the YBR campuses each day during Elul.

While Halachos (laws) and minhagim (customs) are a focus of learning within the classrooms, students have ushered in the month of Elul with memorable events and incursions. Primary and Kinder classes were thrilled to receive a visit from a horse and buggy, highlighting the rabbinic teaching that during the month of Elul the ‘King is in the Field’ – that Hashem is more accessible and receptive to our Teshuvah (regrets of the past and good resolutions for the future) during this time.

chagim – ranging from learning Rosh Hashanah songs, decorating and delving into the Machzor, to learning about significant items relating to the chag and exploring the concepts of Teshuvah, Tefillah and Tzedakah. To infuse a deeper meaning into, and promote greater insight and understanding of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, students are delving into the steps involved in doing Teshuvah and are learning the significance and meaning behind the shofar and its message. Additionally, students are gaining an understanding of tefillos (prayers) associated with the yomim noraim (high holy days) and are learning to navigate the Machzor.

Creativity abounds, with students cooking up a storm learning to make honey brownies, creating colourful Rosh Hashanah greeting cards, table decorations and honey dishes.

Secondary campuses of Yeshivah and Beth Rivkah are extending their own knowledge and compiling booklets of divrei torah, essays and learnings, that will be distributed to many shules in Melbourne, ensuring a meaningful yom tov for all.

YESHIVAH – BETH RIVKAH COLLEGES A Volunteering Example A love of, and dedication to, volunteering are instilled in Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah students, inspired significantly by the countless parent volunteers who generously devote their time to contribute to the school.

The Caulfield Volunteer Awards, kindly sponsored by Bendigo Bank – Caulfield Park Branch, set out to recognise and praise individuals who serve the community and provide behind the scenes support.

Two Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah parents were thrilled to be recipients of this award - Mrs Chumi Franck for her volunteer work over many years in the Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah Uniform Shop, and Mr Benton Segal who received recognition for his volunteer work with the Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah Parent Security Group (PSG). David Southwick, Member for Caulfield, presented the well-deserved awards and acknowledged their generous and “tireless efforts”.

Celebration of Learning at Yeshivah Attended by a record number of guests this year, the Annual Mishnayos B’al Peh Awards Dinner took place at Yeshivah College in August. Parents, students and teachers filled the Werdiger Hall and were delighted to participate in an event that recognises the achievements of students who have taken great efforts to learn Mishnayos B’al Peh (by heart).

Held in memory of Yeshivah student Nathan Dzienciol a’h who had an exceptional dedication to learning Mishna and who tragically passed away in 1990 when he was in year 3, this invaluable learning program (now in its 28th year) continues to grow and flourish – with record breaking participation rates and learning achievements being celebrated this year. Over 400 students have actively participated in the optional program this year and have, incredibly, memorised in excess of

300,000 lines of Torah!

Students are tested on their learning throughout the year, with accumulated points ultimately being redeemed for prizes ranging from Tehillim, Chumashim, Talmuds and Mishnas. These awards and prizes were presented at the awards evening, along with students demonstrating their skill reciting Mishnayos and Tanya by heart. As a special tribute to Nathan a’h, students recited seven special Mishnas - each beginning with one of the letters of his name.

An address from Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah Principal, Rabbi Yehoshua Smukler commended the students for their fantastic achievements and outlined that “when it comes to aspects of holiness we must always continuously increase and raise our standard”, encouraging students to strive to reach even greater learning heights. Additionally, Rabbi Gordon, one of the program coordinators, expressed his pride in the students’ outstanding achievements and commented that this evening “gives us the opportunity to honour a ‘zokein’ – one who has acquired wisdom and now has Torah engraved in their memory.”

Precious Objects ABC COMPASS Compass presents Precious Objects, a powerful documentary where Holocaust survivors tell their stories through an object they managed to keep from that time. When survivors hold up their object to the camera and tell the story behind it, the object is no longer just a blanket, a jacket, a photo. It becomes almost sacred while still being tangible evidence of lived experience.

‘What we’re really doing is taking something very ordinary, very humble and giving it the respect that we believe it deserves”.

Roslyn Sugarman, Head curator, Sydney Jewish Museum In Precious Objects six survivors introduce the ‘object’ they have donated to the collection at the Sydney Jewish Museum. Olga holds the blanket thrown at her as she lay in the mud, half dead on the day Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was liberated. Olga kept this blanket and years later donated it to the Jewish museum. It held a shocking secret that was only revealed when it was sent to a laboratory for testing.

“No I wasn’t shocked, I knew it was from human hair. The blanket was woven in Auschwitz by inmates for the SS people... the hair which was shaven from us was from living human beings” Olga Horak, Survivor George was twelve when WW2 broke out.

He donated his striped concentration camp jacket to the museum. As he holds it in his

lap, he marvels at its size.

“The jacket is so small that I wouldn’t probably be able to cover half of my body” George Grojnowski, Survivor Jacqueline is a child survivor. Throughout the war, she and her brother Charlie were hidden in orphanages on the French border.

Jacqueline donated a boat her father – who did not survive -made for Charlie.

“We didn’t know what was going on in the world. We thought it was just men fighting each other but we had no idea what Hitler was doing to the Jewish people” Jacqueline Dale, Survivor Not all the survivors we meet have an object from their time in the camps. Yvonne survived Auschwitz but had nothing to bring out with her. When the curators asked if she would like to make a donation, she chose something given to her from the safety of her new home in Australia.

“I told Ros that I have got that dish from Woollies which was our wedding present. It must have cost 2 pounds, maybe not even.

And what it means to me, how I looked after it all these years how meaningful it is” Yvonne Engleman, Survivor These are just some of the stories told through the objects of the survivors in this compelling and uplifting story. Yvonne’s last words say it all, ‘Whatever Hitler had in mind, he didn’t succeed.’

Israeli Eco-Sculpture Artist Nirit Levav Packer Opens Flagship Gallery In Jaffa, Israel Levav Packer’s Namesake Gallery To Showcase Celebrated Eco- Design Sculptures From the Artist’s “From Within” and “Unchained” Collections, Among Other Works, in a Stunning, Ottoman-Era Building Multidisciplinary artist and renowned eco-design sculpturist Nirit Levav Packer unveiled her new flagship gallery in the vibrant and historic Jaffa flea market, showcasing dozens of large-scale sculptures comprised of recycled materials (bicycle parts, metal scraps and unwanted, metallic rubble) along with more accessible, green-design sculptures and objects that will set the stage for the artist’s first-ever public gallery.

The Nirit Levav Packer Gallery will boast 400-square-meters of raw-yet-refined exhibition spaces in a historic, Ottomanera building that has been restored to its original splendor. The gallery will open with a retrospective exhibition of large-scale, signature sculptures by Levav Packer from her “From Within” and “Unchained” exhibitions, which originally premiered in Israel in 2017.

The “From Within” series presents largescale sculptures of pregnant women that represent the complexities of motherhood in the 21st- century, and enveloping the several stages for pregnancy, from fertility to birth.

sensitivity and raw emotion, expressing the connection between pain and femininity.

Chains, gears, twig and springs, valves and other materials, are welded together in order to symbolize the new, complex woman: the strong woman of the 21st-century.

Works from Levav Packer’s “Unchained” exhibition showcase the artist’s early inspirations from accidentally discovering a box of metallic bicycle chains. The series focuses upon sculptures of dogs ranging in size, and made solely of a vast array of metal chains. Within this series, Levav Packer champions the use of working with rough, industrial materials to create a dialogue between the hidden flexibility, tenderness, and versatile range of movement they possess.

These installations illustrate Levav Packer’s ability to humanize and instill delicacy and softness into hard, cold metal.

Levav Packer merges her femininity with the masculine power within her, as well as her complexity and philosophy to create the art in her new flagship gallery.

Rosh Hashanah with Yotam Ottolenghi Roasted chicken with Jerusalem artichoke and lemon Ingredients 450g Jerusalem artichokes, peeled and cut into 6 lengthways (1.5cm thick wedges) 3tbsp lemon juice 8 chicken thighs, on the bone with the skin, or a medium whole chicken divided into 4 12 banana shallots, peeled and halved lengthways 12 large garlic cloves, sliced 1 medium lemon, cut in half lengthways and then into very fine slices 1tsp saffron threads 50ml olive oil 150ml cold water 1½tbsp of pink peppercorns, slightly crushed 10g fresh thyme leaves 40g tarragon leaves, chopped Method Place the Jerusalem artichokes in a medium saucepan, cover with plenty of

water and add half the lemon juice. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 10-20 minutes, until tender but not soft.

Drain and leave to cool. In a large mixing bowl, combine the artichokes and all the remaining ingredients, excluding the remaining lemon juice and half of the tarragon. Add 2tsp salt and ½tsp black pepper. Use your hands to mix everything together thoroughly. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge overnight, or for at least 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 240˚C/ 475˚F/Gas 9. Arrange the chicken pieces, skin side up, in the centre of a roasting tin and spread the remaining ingredients around the chicken. Roast for 30 minutes. Cover the tin with foil and cook for a further 15 minutes. At this point, the chicken should be completely cooked. Remove from the oven and add the reserved tarragon and lemon juice. Stir well, taste and add more salt if needed. Serve at once Serves 4

Kol Nidrei – Returning to our True Core

Roasted Sweet Potatoes & Fresh Figs Ingredients 4 small sweet potatoes (2 1/4 lb / 1 kg in total) 5 tbsp olive oil scant 3 tbsp / 40 ml balsamic vinegar (you can use a commercial rather than a premium aged grade) 1 1/2 tbsp / 20 g superfine sugar 12 green onions, halved lengthwise and cut into 1 1/2-in / 4cm segments 1 red chile, thinly sliced 6 ripe figs (8 1/2 oz / 240 g in total), quartered 5 oz / 150 g soft goat’s milk cheese (optional) Maldon sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Method Preheat the oven to 475°F / 240°C. Wash the sweet potatoes, halve them lengthwise, and then cut each half again similarly into 3 long wedges. Mix with 3 tablespoons of the olive oil, 2 teaspoons salt, and some black pepper. Spread the

wedges out, skin side down, on a baking sheet and cook for about 25 minutes, until soft but not mushy. Remove from the oven and leave to cool down.

To make the balsamic reduction, place the balsamic vinegar and sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then decrease the heat and simmer for 2 to 4 minutes, until it thickens. Be sure to remove the pan from the heat when the vinegar is still runnier than honey; it will continue to thicken as it cools. Stir in a drop of water before serving if it does become too thick to drizzle.

Arrange the sweet potatoes on a serving platter. Heat the remaining oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat and add the green onions and chile. Fry for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring often to make sure not to burn the chile. Spoon the oil, onions, and chile over the sweet potatoes. Dot the figs among the wedges and then drizzle over the balsamic reduction. Serve at room temperature. Crumble the cheese over the top, if using.

Give Forgiveness, Get Peace ZIPPORAH OLIVER O.A.M., M.A.P.S. (PSYCHOLOGIST)

Forgiveness is a large and pivotal topic in Judaism, which has many and varied applications. Forgiveness can include forgiving ourselves, forgiving another, accepting forgiveness, seeking G-d’s forgiveness for our misdeeds, and a host of issues associated with manifesting forgiveness.

As we are in the Hebrew month of Ellul and then Tishrei, we find that forgiveness is a paramount theme. We yearn for G-d’s forgiveness and blessings for the New Year. Making peace with our fellow Jew is stressed and we know that Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, can give us forgiveness within our relationship with Avinu Malkeinu, our heavenly Father and King. However, regarding “Bein Adam L’Chavero”, between us and our fellow man the onus remains on us.

Regarding forgiveness, Rabbi Sacks wisely recommends: “It is a terrible weight to carry around with you and you have to travel light in this world, we have too few energies to waste them on being unforgiving.”

In my practice as a psychologist, the issue of forgiveness or rather the lack of forgiveness often surfaces in parent-child relationships, sibling relationships, spousal relationship, employment scenarios and much more. The inability to resolve conflicts may take a serious toll on emotional and

physical health.

With this in mind, here are a few points to consider regarding the act of forgiving and how it can lead you to finding peace.

1. Forgiveness can lead to: healthier relationships, greater spirituality and psychological well-being, less anxiety and stress, lower blood pressure, fewer symptoms of depression, and lower risk of alcohol and substance abuse.

2. Forgiveness is not reconciliation.

Forgiveness is a decision to let go of resentment and thoughts of revenge. The act that hurt or offended you might always remain a part of your life, but forgiveness can lessen

its grip on you and help you to focus on other more positive parts of your life.

3. If you allow negative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness and sense of injustice.

4. If you are unforgiving, you might pay the price repeatedly by bringing anger and bitterness into your relationships and new experiences. This makes it difficult for you to enjoy the present and you might lose valuable and enriching connections with others.

5. Even when one cannot justify another person’s behaviour, one can still give forgiveness. Getting another person to

change his or her actions, behaviour or words isn’t the point of forgiveness.

6. Forgiveness can take away the power the other person continues to wield in your life.

7. Remember, however, you can’t force someone to forgive you. Others need to move to forgiveness in their own time.

Whatever the outcome, commit to treating others with compassion, empathy and respect.

Forgiveness can be a difficult area that many people avoid or struggle with, however an inability to forgive can take a large toll on various aspects of our lives and our health.

Striving for peace is always a worthy goal, and is most certainly relevant as we enter a new year. May all be blessed with a Ketiva V Chatima Tova, Shana Tova V’M’tukah, to be inscribed for a good and sweet New Year.

Spot On Café Expands: The All-New Ultimate Venue For Your Next Special Event SPOT ON CAFÉ SARAH BENDETSKY For several years it has been a culinary adventure for young restaurateur Izzy Abrahams.

At the age of 24, Izzy changed careers from his job with an audio-visual company in Port Melbourne and followed his dream to become a successful caterer and restaurateur.

His first business, Passionate Cupcakes, involved creating and delivering succulent desserts to local kosher grocery establishments. While delighted with the response to his cupcakes and desserts, Izzy dreamed of something bigger. So when a café space on Glen Eira Road became available, he took a leap of faith and created Spot On Café.

Starting a new business, however, was not an overnight success. It took three years to build the brand.

“This is not unusual for restaurants anywhere in the world,” Izzy pointed out.

“Many new restaurants struggle in their early days. Some don’t make it.”

Luckily, it wasn’t the case for Spot On Café, with their mouth-watering dishes and desserts, attracting customers who were soon lining up and making reservations weeks in advance.

Nonetheless, a lifelong learner, Izzy was on the lookout for fresh opportunities. He noticed a niche for a pleasant local function eatery that offered a generous space,

cosy atmosphere, delicious kosher food, convenient parking and a great vibe.

“So three and a half years after the opening of Spot On Café, we’re expanding to fill that gap market,” Izzy said.

The new Spot On eatery and function venue located at 132 Glen Eira Rd, Elsternwick, hopes to experience the same success as the original Spot On Café.

Hundreds flocked in to see what the new place was all about on the very first day on 23 July.

Izzy commented, “We are now serving more classic dishes than those on our

original menu. Guests can expect to enjoy brunch favourites like Eggs Benedict. It’s served on a rosemary hash and topped with Hollandaise sauce. It’s been an instant hit.”

“Great food with astonishing presentation and exclusive ingredients,” customer Samuel J. Kiumbo said. “Local chefs are simply superb; kind and professional staff and awesome quality and price. Strongly recommended!”

From its early beginnings, the new Spot On Café has catered to the needs of its customers by offering car parking spaces with dedicated spots for guests living with

a disability among many diner-friendly accommodations it offers.

It seems that Spot On’s new location was as well thought out as Izzy’s previous two food ventures have been. The best testimonial to prove this is the seven functions booked at Spot On for the month of August alone. The space is perfect for all kinds of events, with capacity for over 100 guests; be it a small music concert, birthday parties or corporate promotions.”

Seeing double on the big screen: JIFF announces program launch screenings The Jewish International Film Festival (24 October – 21 November) will officially launch its program with the Australian Premiere of The Twinning Reaction on Sunday 23 September. That is what it felt like to watch this sumptuous big screen soapie.

Based upon the worldwide bestseller

by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians is a contemporary romantic comedy that takes a fun and engaging look at what can happen when young love collides with old money.

The story follows New York economics professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore.

Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life.

Not only is he the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families, but also one of its most sought-after bachelors.

Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) taking aim.

In the case of the latter, she is of the firm opinion that this modern American girl will never measure up.

It quickly becomes clear that the only

thing crazier than love is family, but Rachel proves to be no pushover.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, the screenplay is by Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. Crazy Rich Asians features the first all-Asian ensemble in a contemporary Hollywood movie in a quarter of a century.

Although set primarily in Singapore – and doesn’t the place look absolutely magnificent, so much so that you feel you just have to visit – the story mines humour from the idiosyncrasies of one family in a way that people everywhere can relate.

The production values in the film are first

rate. The production designer is Nelson Coates and director of photography Vanja Černjul.

Chu and Young, as channelled by Wu and Golding, certainly make for an attractive and endearing couple.

Around them though there is not only crazy, but zany and it is these larger than life characters that help make the picture what it is.

More specifically, I am talking about Wu’s over the top girlfriend and her girlfriend’s family.

The look and feel of the picture is

ostentatious, in keeping with the theme.

It has sass … attitude and keeps on keeping on, in other words its pacing is spot on to keep you interested and entertained throughout.

Nothing deep and meaningful here, pure popcorn fare, but this is a deluxe helping that is so good you can’t possibly let a morsel go to waste before you devour the lot.

Crazy Rich Asians deserves to do the great business that it will undoubtedly do.

Rated M, it scores a 7½ out of 10.

Flexibility occasionaly is ok!

THE SLEEP COACH CHERYL FINGLESON Another year has passed and Rosh Hashanah is around the corner, the question is ‘Do we take our baby/ toddler with us to share this special time with family and friends?’

One of the key elements in ensuring a happy, healthy sleep routine for you and your children is a little flexibility (we all know how life can throw a spanner in the works after all!) – but could too much flexibility be a bad thing? Babies and toddlers thrive on sleep routine, it offers them a safe, reliable and consistent schedule that ushers in the close to a big day and signals the beginning of a whole new day of adventures. However; research in the field, coupled with my client’s experience, has proven that consistency is the key to a happy sleep routine for your children and that too much flexibility can actually lead to disturbed sleeping patterns. Of course, absolute rigidity is a stark outlook: There will be times when you have no choice and must accept an invite, we need these breaks in the routine to keep us connected and fulfilled, and that is ok. But if continual interruptions to your child’s bedtime become a regular occurrence, the sleep cycle can become a nightmare!

If your child is adaptable and fairly content when their routine is disrupted there is no problem. There is the other extreme when a child simply cannot adjust and can become irritable requiring extra care to get through the night so whatever your baby or toddler is like, you put your best foot forward and have yourselves a good time when you are out. One night will not spoil a good routine, my advice is the very next day and night you get back on track with good naps and a good bedtime routine.

An inconsistent schedule can lead to

a variety of problems. Feeding at 10am one day and 1pm the next can trigger restlessness in your baby, especially if he/ she has a sensitive temperament – and likewise, napping during lunchtime one day but not the next can lead to agitated night time patterns, throwing your baby’s established routine out for the next couple of days! But does this mean that everyday, day in day out, you have to follow the same pattern? Of course not! (Phew!). Flexibility in your baby’s routine is a good thing in small doses; it helps them to adjust to the ever-changing world around them and can introduce them to new and exciting experiences! The key to flexibility is a little goes a long way.

Remember, the big wide world can be overwhelming for your child at times.

A well-established sleep routine can significantly reduce their level of stress and anxiety, leading to healthier, happier sleep for the whole family (after all, a good nights sleep for your child is a good nights sleep for you!). Keep this in mind when planning your week and the whole sleep cycle can be a fun, reliable and enriching experience for your family!

4th AFL Jewish Schools Cup AFL JEWISH SCHOOLS CUP

Teams from Sholem Aleichem College, Mount Scopus Memorial College, Bialik College, The King David School, Yavneh College, Yeshivah College and Beth Rivkah Ladies College all competed in the 4th AFL Jewish Schools Cup, which was held on Thursday August 16th. It was hosted by AFL Victoria and the St Kilda Football Club. - We had 6 female teams and 6 male teams.

The Cup was held at Linen House, the home of the St Kilda Football Club in

Seaford.

Students battled hard across both competitions. Bialik College and Mount Scopus Memorial College battled it out in both the girls and boys finals.

Mount Scopus won the day in the girls competition and Bialik won the boys competition with massive scenes of celebration post match.

The students were very excited to meet with VFLW player Amy Silver, who is currently playing for the Southern Saints.

Amy spoke about her journey with VFLW, her hopes to make it to AFLW and what it means to be a role model as a Jewish

footballer. All students also received tickets to a St Kilda home game this season.

Schools Cup. In our inaugural year, in 2015, we hosted just 3 male teams and 2 female teams, so we were very pleased to host 6 female teams and 6 male teams for the second time (the first time being in 2017). In preparation for the cup, the schools are offered free training sessions with qualified coaches at school as a part of the AFL’s Multicultural Schools Program, which assists the students in learning the skills of the game.

We are looking forward to seeing these schools return next year for another outstanding Cup.
