We can support Israel and work to end the occupation NEW ISRAEL FUND AUSTRALIA The New Israel Fund (NIF) Australia hosted the successful Melbourne and Sydney book launches of Kingdom of Olives and Ash: Writers Confront the Occupation last month.

In total, almost 800 attended NIF events launching the book, including in Sydney at Paddington Town Hall with Pulitzer Prize winning author Geraldine Brooks, award winning Israeli author Assaf Gavron and Executive Director of Breaking the Silence Avner Gvaryahu. In Melbourne the event at Memo Music Hall sold out with over 250 attending to hear Gavron and Gvaryahu.

As a Diaspora Jew Brooks acknowledged the complex feelings Jews have about Israel. “I think Jews in the Diaspora have to balance a reluctance to respond with the responsibility to address it,” she told the Sydney audience, admitting that many of her Jewish friends preferred not to attend this sort of discussion.

“Traditionally, Jews have been offered two options: support the Israeli government and Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories, or the alternative from the BDS movement, which says that in order to oppose the occupation you also have to oppose Israel. We’re strengthening the voices of moderation that say it is possible to

support Israel, while also opposing the very real issues created by occupation, both for Palestinians and Israelis,” said NIF Australia executive director Liam Getreu.

Kingdom of Olives and Ash, put together

by Jewish-American authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, along with Breaking the Silence, included essays from 26 Jewish, Israeli, Palestinian and global authors, with each writer focusing on a different story that highlighted Israel’s 51-year occupation of the Palestinian

Territories.

The events, moderated by Deb Whitmont, also provided a platform for Gvaryahu to discuss his work at Breaking the Silence, an organisation of current and former IDF soldiers who give testimonies in order to educate the Israeli public about the effect of the occupation.

Gvaryahu, a former IDF sergeant and paratrooper, argued that the solution lay not in amending the rules of conduct for the IDF soldiers but in ending the ongoing military control.

Many members of the audience welcomed the opportunity to have an open conversation about what is happening in Israel, rather than ignoring the current reality for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

“It was incredible to see so many like minded people from all walks of life come together at the NIF event with Breaking the Silence to talk about the realities of what’s happening on the ground in Israel,” said Netzer youth leader Mikaela Webb about the Melbourne event. More than 100 leaders from the Zionist youth movements and AUJS attended the events in Sydney and Melbourne.

The events in Melbourne and Sydney also offered a chance for the Jewish community to fund important work in Israel that change the reality on the ground for Palestinians and Israelis, including projects that promote healthcare, education and legal support.

“This entire week has been an opportunity for the community to learn more about what is happening in Israel and the Occupied Territories. We are glad to have been able to offer such engaging evenings with top quality speakers and allow people to learn more about the need to end the occupation,” said NIF Australia Executive Director Liam Getreu.

Now’s the perfect time to re-awaken your Yiddish roots with Kadimah’s new language and conversation class for not-quite-absolutebeginners-but-not-exactly-confidentspeakers. Very possibly, that’s you.

The Kadimah, Australia’s home of Yiddish culture, is moving with the times and bringing Yiddish culture to an everevolving community.

For 30 years, Seniors’ Programs at the Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre and National Library was spearheaded by the Mitvokh Klub (Wednesday Club).

The weekly event would start with lunch (rye bread sandwiches with dill pickles of course) and proceed to readings, music, talks by politicians, academics or other interesting speakers - whatever entertainment had been organised by the indomitable Cesia Goldberg. Mostly, but not always, it was in Yiddish.

The Wednesday Club began when that generation was in their 60s. Today’s 60plus year olds interested in Yiddish culture are looking for something different, and they are finding it at the Kadimah. In addition to regular theatre, concerts and

literary events, The Kadimah offers a wide range of day and evening groups for different levels of Yiddish reading and discussion.

“People get very disappointed when we have to miss a session because of a public holiday,” says shmooz group leader Diane Shonberg. “It’s thrilling how much people

love Yiddish, their mameloshn, which many haven’t spoken for years.”

Beginning on July 2ndthe Kadimah is adding to its suite of beginners’ Yiddish classes with “Yiddish fun der heym”.

Literally translated this means “Yiddish from home” but really it’s an opportunity especially designed for those who heard

Yiddish at home or have a smidge of Yiddish and want to reconnect and reawaken their roots.

Has the UNHRC Exceeded its Credibility Credit Limit?

MICHAEL DANBY MHR MELBOURNE PORTS Australia should remain in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

In a sudden move, on the 19th June the United States announced that it was going withdraw from the UNHRC with Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN stating that; “For too long the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias.”.

Ms Haley also went on to say the; “disproportionate focus and unending hostility toward Israel is clear proof that the council is motivated by political bias, not by human rights”.

I entirely agree with American condemnation of the UNHRC focussing on this UN obsession with the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Yet I believe it is better to fight from within the tent rather than from outside and would have preferred that the US maintained its position on the council. However, it is certainly clear from the UNHRC’s record that the US is correct in accusing this organisation of having an obsession with condemning Israel.

In the first ten years of its existence (from 2006 to 2016) the UNHRC passed 68 resolutions condemning Israel and 67 on the rest of the world combined. In that period, there were no resolutions on human rights abuses in Zimbabwe, Yemen, Iraq or the Palestinian Territories.

2018 session concluded with 1 resolution on North Korea, 1 on Iran, 2 on Syria, and 5 on Israel.

Australia, in America’s absence, will have to fight even harder for the organisation which is based at the old League of Nations headquarters in Geneva. Australia will have to do even more of the heavy lifting to push the UNHRC to rebalance its focus on international human rights.

The Council — whose members include China, Cuba, Egypt, Qatar, Pakistan, Venezuela, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and UAE — passed zero resolutions regarding the deaths of protestors in Nicaragua, statesanctioned murders in the Philippines or Venezuela.

There is also the notorious “Agenda item 7”, the UNHRC’s standing agenda item for condemning Israel. It is the only countryspecific agenda item of the UNHRC. António Guterres, Secretary General of the UN, recently pleaded with his members not to yield to an obsession with the IsraeliPalestinian conflict. He was right.

“From day one as Secretary-General of the United Nations, I have consistently spoken out against any unilateral measures that would jeopardise the prospect of peace for Israelis and Palestinians.

Jerusalem is a final status issue that must be resolved through direct negotiations between the two parties on the basis of the relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, taking into account the legitimate concerns of both the Palestinian and the Israeli sides….”

And continued; “…For my part as the United Nations Secretary-General, I will do everything in my power to support the Israeli and Palestinian leaders to return to meaningful negotiations

and to realize this vision of a lasting peace for both people.”

When Eleanor Roosevelt and Rene Cassin, founded the Commission on Human Rights, the predecessor to the UNHRC, they had a grand vision that the body would protect human rights around the world. They were both staunch supporters of Israel and were committed to universal human rights. They would be repelled by what the Council has become, which is a club of autocrats that stands in judgement of liberal-democracies.

Australia will need to lead the way in fighting this trend at the UN’s second headquarters in Geneva. I have pointed to recent positive developments at the UN General Assembly, where a majority of states voted for a US amendment to condemn Hamas for the events in Gaza much to the surprise of the usual Islamist/ authoritarian states.

The US amendment — holding Hamas responsible for rocket attacks against Israel, the destruction of crossing points delivering humanitarian aid from Israel into Gaza, and the use of Palestinian civilians as human shields — won the support of 62 member states, but only after an attempt led by the Algerian delegation to prevent a vote outright failed.

As Miroslav Lajčák, the president of the UN General Assembly, attempted to call a vote on the American amendment, the Algerians, backed by Cuba, the State of Palestine and Venezuela among others, invoked a procedural rule to prevent the vote from taking place at all. Speaking from the floor, US Ambassador Nikki Haley countered that “denying a vote on the US amendment would be the height of this body’s hypocrisy.”

to a vote, with 78 members opposing, 26 abstaining and 59 in favour — a rare defeat for the pro-Palestinian bloc in the General Assembly, and not the last of the afternoon.

Moments later, a sudden burst of applause led by the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, signalled that the US amendment had passed, with 62 member states voting in favour, 58 opposing and 42 abstaining.

That was not the end of the matter, however, as procedural objections arose once more. Lajčák made a hasty presidential ruling that a two-thirds majority was needed for the amendment to pass.

Again, Haley challenged, and the third vote of the afternoon followed. This time, Lajčák’s ruling was upheld — 66 states voted with the US, with 73 voting in favour of the ruling, and 26 abstaining.

As the General Assembly prepared for its final vote of the day, on the unamended resolution sponsored by Algeria and Turkey, it was already clear to stunned Arab delegates that one-third of the UN’s 193 member states had joined the US in condemning Hamas — and that many more chose to abstain, rather than vote against.

A later statement from Haley emphasized, the fact remained that “a plurality of 62 countries voted in favour of the US-led effort to address Hamas’s responsibility for the disastrous conditions in Gaza.”

“We had more countries on the right side than the wrong side,” Haley said. “By their votes, those countries recognized that peace will only be achieved when realities are recognized, including Israel’s legitimate security interests, and the need to end Hamas’ terrorism.”

Research mission fosters new opportunities to improve health

collaboration with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, US, will be critical in helping inform governments and health organisations globally about health planning relating to type 2 diabetes.

“The time that Baker Institute researchers spend in laboratories in Israel provides a wonderful opportunity for the scientists to come together and develop new approaches to treatment that hopefully will improve the lives of people with diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” Professor Shaw said.

BAKER HEART AND DIABETES INSTITUTE

A scientific delegation from the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute aimed at fostering research collaborations to translate into better health returned from a productive visit to Israel this month.

The delegation of Melbourne scientists, led by Professor Jonathan Shaw, endocrinologist, epidemiologist and Deputy Director of the Institute, participated in research symposiums at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and The Technion in Haifa.

The scientists and medical specialists also visited a range of other institutions across Israel including the Weizmann Institute, Sheba Medical Center, Maccabi Health, Rambam Medical Center, Clalit Health Services and Tel Aviv University.

During the past several years, Baker Institute and Israeli scientists have been sharing their expertise in cardiovascular disease and diabetes research in order to accelerate research and forge new partnerships. This has been made possible thanks to the incredible support of a donor from Melbourne’s Jewish community.

Since 2015, Institute scientists have made regular trips to Israel and in 2017, the Baker Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hadassah Medical Center to promote collaborative research, and staff and student exchange. The chambers of commerce in both countries are also working with the Institute to

Baker Institute researchers in Haifa promote institutional partnerships and collaborations.

Professor Shaw said there was a range of exciting research projects underway including studies examining new ways to prevent and treat heart beat irregularities and a novel approach to better understanding and treating type 2 diabetes based on beta cell death. The Institute is also investigating the development and application of new technology, including monitoring devices

and apps that have the potential to change the landscape of diabetes management.

Other projects involving Israeli researchers include a global study into the incidence of type 2 diabetes that the Baker Institute is leading. The study contains data from more than 300 million people in 15 countries. Data from Israeli databases is proving particularly useful in helping to ascertain if screening practices are influencing incidence trends.

WIZO Victoria celebrates ‘Party For The Kids’ WIZO VICTORIA On Sunday 24th of June, WIZO Victoria hosted WIZO’s Party For The Kids at Beth Weizmann. The annual event was a huge success, celebrating the staggering amount raised for the first half of the year by the various WIZO groups.

A huge congratulations to all of the WIZO members and volunteers who dedicate their time by volunteering and donating to underprivileged kids, youth and women in Israel in WIZO’s care. Money raised provides the vital support required for the WIZO Australia projects which include; • Ahuzat Yeladim – Residential boarding school in Haifa for troubled youth. Ahuzat Yeladim is often the last resort for these youth.

• Makom BaLev – Centre for girls at risk.

This centre will take many young women off the streets and away from prostitution, giving them an opportunity to be educated and become proud of what they can achieve.

The event also saw the relaunch of an old fundraiser by WIZO Australia – the WIZO Birthday Club – whereby a parent, grandparent, relative or friend pays a one off fee of $180 (from birth to Bar/Bat Mitzvah age) and each year for their birthday their nominated child / grandchild/ niece/ nephew etc receives a birthday card from WIZO until Bar or Bat Mitzvah age or alternatively a one off fee of $18 per year.

In a highly digitalised age, it is easy to forget the pleasure of receiving a personalised, handwritten card, something many of our children and grandchildren have never experienced!

WIZO Australia held a Birthday Club Design A Card Competition and the winner as well as the ten runners up were announced and presented with certificates during Sunday’s event. Congratulations to Zimra Van Der Plaat whose design won and the ten runners up whose cards are available for purchase as a pack for $20.

Tikkun Olam: the Jewish case for renewable energy

From the Kabbalistic teachings of the synonymity of God and nature to the biblical instructions to guard and tend to the Garden of Eden - Judaism and nature are inseparable.

Each year, we celebrate Tu BiShvat by planting (eucalyptus) trees in JNF’s forests.

In fact, many of Israel’s major institutions, including Hebrew University and the Knesset, chose Tu Bishvat to mark their commencement as a tribute to the environment.

Living in Israel taught me to appreciate every inch of land and every drop of precious water.

Israel is a dry country without vast natural resources. Israelis were forced into ingenuity – and that’s exactly what they do best.

Yet, modern Israel doesn’t just provide for its people, it aims to do so as a responsible global citizen.

After the Paris climate accord in 2015, Prime Minister Netanyahu declared Israel would ‘do its part’ to help combat climate change.

Driving through the Negev you will see fields of solar panels, capturing the sun’s energy as part of Israel’s push towards its 10 percent renewable energy target by

2020.

I vividly remember living in Israel as a child and learning about the solar panels that sat on top of the blocks of flats in our neighbourhood - heating the water in the apartments below.

Solar panels covered our home town of Be’er Yaakov and I also saw them in Rishon LeZion where I went to school.

Today, Israelis are looking for new ways

to improve technology, to make energy generation and consumption more efficient and more environmentally friendly.

I am proud to say we are doing the same here in Victoria.

In 2017, the Andrews Labor Government legislated its Renewable Energy Target.

We are working to achieve 25 per cent renewable energy by 2020 and 40 per cent by 2025.

Under Labor, there has been unprecedented investment in wind and solar technology, generating more power and lower emissions. More clean power is good for consumers, but it also creates jobs – and lots of them.

Sure, we still get most of our power from coal. But a Renewable Energy Target is not about what the technology of today can provide, it’s about what we want tomorrow to look like.

When the Victorian Liberals appointed David Southwick as the Shadow Minister for Renewables I was hopeful of a bipartisan approach.

I was even impressed with David’s speech he gave in 2016 on the steps of Parliament saying: ‘Victoria and Australia are experiencing a renewables revolution that is led by the people, because the people want it. Voters want it. The community wants it.’

Incredibly, it took less than 12 months for

David to forget his own triumphant words as he and Matthew Guy announced that they would scrap Victoria’s Renewable Energy Target.

Given his passionate words calling for a renewable revolution, I am not sure if David’s heart was completely in the Liberal’s policy back-flip.

It could have been forced upon him by the conservative forces in the Liberal Party – who knows?

Either way, the Victorian Liberals have made a choice to turn their back on a cleaner future.

The famous Rabbi Joseph Soleveitchik taught that there is dignity in progress.

‘Civilised Man has gained limited control of nature and has become in certain respects her master, and with his mastery he has attained dignity as well. His mastery has made it possible for him to act in accordance with his responsibility.’

I believe we can choose to pursue a cleaner future, or we can choose stagnation and irreparable damage to our only home.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said, ‘we will reduce greenhouse gas emissions on behalf of future generations.’

David Southwick should heed this message from Bibi.

Celebrating Jewish Grandmothers at the Jewish Museum of Australia JEWISH MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIA “Yes there is a traditional Jewish grandmother. I do believe that. I’m one of them!” Rahel Vivat, one of the grandmothers featured in ‘Love & Legacy’.

The Jewish Museum of Australia presents ‘Love & Legacy’, an exuberant celebration of Jewish grandmothers.

This exhibition begs the question – what does the Jewish Grandmother in the 21st century look like? Featuring the stories of grandmothers from diverse backgrounds – orthodox to secular, from India to Egypt to Poland and beyond – this exhibition honours the complexity of the role of the grandmother in contemporary society.

‘Love & Legacy’ also details the many ways cultural knowledge, shared histories and family traditions are kept alive from one generation to the next, providing a space to celebrate and fully acknowledge the achievements, contributions, experience and knowledge of our grandmothers.

The curatorial team behind ‘Love & Legacy’ engaged photographic artist Elli Bardas for specially commissioned portraits of the following women from all walks of life – Lady Anna Cowen, Barbara Ajzenberg, Hazel Kelly, Genia Janover, Renata Singer, Rahel Vivat, Claire Aghion and Claudine Berman, Nechama Werdiger, Carol Schwartz and Lee Ann Basser (bios below). The exhibition highlights the achievements of all these strong female role-models, and the many ways in which they shape and support our community.

‘Love & Legacy’ includes filmed interviews, family heirlooms and accompanying objects from the Museum’s vast collection. With Melbourne’s Jewish community consisting

of many families of Holocaust survivors, this exhibition also highlights themes of absence, for the grandmothers we never knew, for the grandmothers murdered in the Holocaust.

Curator Juliette Hanson says “It has been a real privilege to meet the women whose experiences are at the heart of this exhibition. They all have amazing life-stories and such varied perspectives on their role as grandmothers and on the role of women more broadly. This exhibition provides a warm reminder of how strong grandmothers can be, what they have overcome, and what they continue to give to our community.”

This exhibition is one of five exhibitions about grandmothers as part of the Multicultural Museums Victoria (MMV) ‘Grandmothers’ project, the inaugural exhibition for this unique alliance between the Chinese, Italian, Greek, Islamic and Jewish museums in Melbourne.

There is also a ‘Love & Legacy’ program series as well as joint events as part of the MMV ‘Grandmothers’ project.

Jewish Care Victoria Opts-In to National Redress Scheme JEWISH CARE VICTORIA Jewish Care Victoria will fully participate in the National Redress Scheme for people who experienced institutional child sexual abuse.

For non-government organisations, such as Jewish Care, opting-in to the Scheme is voluntary and without legal obligation.

“Our decision is consistent with Jewish Care’s long-held belief that victims of child sexual abuse should have access to reparation through structured redress schemes,” said President of Jewish Care Victoria, Mike Debinski. “We welcome the Victorian Government’s decision to join the National Redress Scheme.”

Jewish Care launched its own redress scheme in 2013, one of the first organisations in Victoria to do so. The Children in Residential Care Support Scheme provided redress and

access to counselling and support services to individuals who experienced childhood sexual abuse at a predecessor organisation.

“In 2013, we took a strong position on institutional child sexual abuse,” Mr Debinski said. “Jewish Care believes it has a moral obligation to support members of the community who were victims of sexual abuse. We are opting-in to the National Redress Scheme because it is the right thing to do.”

The Scheme, which will run for 10 years beginning on 1 July 2018, is designed to acknowledge harm and provide support to those who experienced sexual abuse in an institutional setting. The needs of eligible victims will be determined on a case-bycase basis and may include access to psychological counselling, direct response from the organisation involved and/or a monetary payment to victims.

An exhibition celebrating grandmothers! Now on across five ethnic museums in Melbourne

MULTICULTURAL MUSEUMS VICTORIA In an Australian first, the Chinese Museum, Co.As.It Italian Historical Society & Museo Italiano, Hellenic Museum, Islamic Museum of Australia and Jewish Museum of Australia, have joined together in a unique alliance to present ‘Grandmothers’, stories of grandmothers from across Melbourne. The theme of ‘grandmothers’, which is at the heart and soul of Multicultural Museums Victoria’s first major joint project, is universal: everyone has a grandmother, and grandmothers play a significant role in various ways in so many cultures.

Because of the universal appeal of the theme, and because of its warm emotional associations, ‘Grandmothers’ provides an extremely accessible encounter with cultural difference, and opportunities to develop intercultural interaction, understanding and appreciation.

The Power of Together ONE FAMILY FUND

Helping Terror Victims Cope through The Power of Together “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy,” goes the famous show tune. But that sentiment doesn’t ring so true for many residents of Israel’s southern region who suffered the brunt of Israel’s three wars with Hamas.

And resumption of rockets from Gaza has been a bitter reminder of those days and the fear and panic they brought.

The tension had already been building.

Six homes in Sderot were damaged by gunfire in March. Some more buildings and cars were hit by bullets in May. Then more than 100 rockets and mortars rained down from Gaza, setting off early warning alarms all day and throughout the night.

That wasn’t the last of the rockets. Bursts of fire continue, sometimes with dozens of rockets coming in a short span of time.

Katy, who was injured in a rocket attack in 2014, said everyone in Sderot relives the experience every time the early warning siren sounds. “The children were born into trauma,” she said. “Each day, they ask ‘will there be an alarm today?’ That’s how it’s been, and that’s how it will be in the future in Sderot,” she added.

Residents of the south are not alone.

“Thousands of terror victims across the country relive some of their traumatic experience when they hear about other terrorist attacks,” said OneFamily CEO Chantal Belzberg.

“Virtually all terror victims are suffering

from post-traumatic stress on some level,” she added.

OneFamily, Israel’s premier organization helping victims of terror, was originally founded to help terror victims financially, raising and distributing more than $50 million to victims over the past 16 years.

Soon, the organisation created a full range of therapeutic services including in-house psychologists, three-day healing retreats, all-day workshops, weekly therapies and support groups including psychodrama, art therapy, Pilates, and yoga.

The key, according to Ms. Belzberg, is a method the organization calls “The Power of Together.”

“For terror victims, so much of their lives are spent trying to pretend they are normal so that they can fit in with other people,” Ms. Belzberg explained. “But inside, they are full of turmoil. They might need to cry all of a sudden for no apparent reason, and people around them don’t know how to respond.

So the victims hold it in so they could fit in with the regular world. Of course, they pay a price emotionally.

“But when they get together with others who have suffered the same way and understand what they are going through, the masks can drop. That’s when the gates of healing open. That’s when they can be themselves and truly process their trauma.”

OneFamily has major retreats scheduled throughout the summer. A support group for bereaved fathers experienced a day of nature therapy; the division of orphans of both parents has a three-day healing experience; widows and their children have special programs; and the Youth Division for bereaved children will hold a weeklong overnight camp for 300 children who have all lost a parent or a sibling.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg at One Family. Virtually each day, one group is busy putting the Power of Together into practice. It’s made a huge difference for those who suffer from trauma.

“Here we can have some inner peace, away from our routine,” one terror survivor said. “You’re around people who understand you and care about you.

“I live with hope,” she said. “OneFamily is hope.”

They Came for the World Cup and Stayed for Shabbat WWW.CHABAD.ORG DOVID MARGOLIN Thousands from around the globe came to Russia and are learning that Judaism there isn’t just history Until two weeks ago, Alberto Galante had never been to Russia. The 2018 FIFA World Cup drew him to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Rostov-on-Don, where he cheered on Mexico’s national soccer team as they advanced through the competition. While Galante—who traveled with his son and friends—was thrilled to see Mexico stun the world in its upset win over defending World Cup champion Germany, that was not the only happy surprise of his 12-day trip: He also got to see living, breathing Jewish life in Russia, which not only left him impressed, but inspired.

“It was a very spiritual experience, even though it wasn’t supposed to be,” says Galante, 49, who lives in Miami but is originally from Mexico. “I expected to see Chabad, but I didn’t expect what we experienced; it was uplifting.”

There are at least 10,000 Israelis among the 1 million soccer fans who have descended upon Russia for the World Cup, but that number does not reflect the thousands of Jewish visitors who have come from all around the world, especially from Latin America.

“We had people from New Zealand, Canada, Argentina,” says Rabbi Mordechai Weisberg, director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Moscow, located in the Moscow Jewish

“People have been flocking here for kosher food, to pray, or just to spend time. They just type ‘Chabad Moscow’ into their GPS, and they are led straight here.”

They are also directed by apps released for iPhone and Android devices, and a website with all relevant Jewish tourist information, set up to orient visitors.

Weisberg met with FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the runup to the games, sharing with him the Jewish community’s World Cup plans throughout Russia. MJCC, the sevenstory heartbeat of Jewish life in Moscow, has a dedicated, multi-lingual information center for visitors, and is home to multiple

kosher restaurants, including Shtetl. A pleasant outdoor restaurant seating area with screens showing games throughout the country has been set up on the property of the Jewish center, where fans are able to sip a kosher cappuccino while keeping up with the matches. Since the start of the games, each Shabbat has seen hundreds join for big Shabbat meals, and more than 1,000 are expected for the Shabbat before the finals.

While in Moscow, Galante and his group were able to visit the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, down the block from the MJCC, and take in a meal at the Jerusalem Restaurant—known for its ribeye and lamb chops—on the rooftop of

Chabad’s Bolshaya Bronnaya Synagogue in Moscow’s center.

But it was Galante’s visit to Rostov, where Mexico beat South Korea, that struck him most. “Where else do you meet a Jew who made the decision to have a brit milah at age 63?” he marvels. In Rostov, Galante met many more Mexican Jewish fans, some of whom he knew and others he didn’t.

“It’s definitely brought a lot of excitement,” says Rostov’s chief rabbi Chaim Danzinger, who also directs Chabad of Rostov. Prior to the games, Danzinger recorded a short video welcoming Jewish visitors to the CONTINUED PAGE 12

Is Trump good for the Jews?

It is action, not character, that is the most important.

WWW.JPOST.COM SHMULEY BOTEACH Last week I debated my good friend Bret Stephens of The New York Times on the question of President Donald Trump and the Jews.

Stephens, one of the finest men I know in journalism and a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, has been very critical of Trump, beginning during the campaign when he was at The Wall Street Journal. A frequent guest at our Shabbat table with his family, I had suggested to Stephens that we bring our fascinating discussions about the president to a public audience.

Stephens feels – and I can’t do full justice to his criticisms, which are far better expressed in his own words – that Trump has sent dog whistles that have fostered racism and even antisemitism; that he has behaved and continues to behave in a manner that is corrosive to the presidency; and that his policies on immigration are antithetical to American values of welcoming immigrants.

Having been born in Mexico City, Stephens is especially passionate about his opposition to Trump’s wall and what he sees is demonization of Mexican immigrants, who come to America for economic opportunity and have no terrorist history.

There can be no question that the Jewish people must be extremely sensitive on immigration and always be strong and vocal advocates for rescuing those in harm’s way. I am reading a new book titled Rescue Board about the War Refugee Board and how it was set up in 1944 largely as a response – by moral men in the Treasury Department, led by Henry Morgenthau – to the antisemitic policies of Breckinridge Long, who headed the State Department’s visa division and kept so many Jews out of America who died in Hitler’s ovens.

Immigration deserves an entirely separate column, which I look forward to writing, God willing.

I told Stephens that on Israel Trump has exceeded all our expectations. Prior to Trump and Nikki Haley, the UN’s principal purpose, it seemed, was to use Israel as

a punching bag for global prejudices and biases against the Jewish state. No president before Trump stopped it. But this one has.

And it has led to global repercussions, with nations now thinking twice before they unfairly slam Israel for fabricated human rights abuses, lest they fall afoul of the most powerful nation on earth.

On Jerusalem, every US president since Bill Clinton promised to move the embassy, including a phenomenal friend of Israel named George W. Bush. None kept his word, save for Trump. And the move is not merely symbolic. The heart and soul of the Jewish people is tied to Jerusalem, and recognition of Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the Jewish people is a de facto recognition of the history and national claims of our people.

On Iran, President Barack Obama negotiated with a regime even while it called for the annihilation of the Jewish people throughout the negotiations. It may seem incredible that the leader of the free world could legitimize a government that openly incites genocide against the Jewish people just 70 years after the Holocaust.

But Obama went beyond negotiations and rewarded that government with $150 billion, with which they sewed further murder and mayhem across the Middle East. With one stroke of a pen, Trump ended the dishonor of the Iran deal and made it clear that nations threatening the incineration of Israel will not be rewarded but punished.

The same is true of Trump’s defense of Israel in the wake of the Gaza riots – which I witnessed with my own eyes from about half a mile from the border fence – where Trump and Haley again had Israel’s back at the UN while the rest of the world condemned Israel for stopping terrorists from entering its domain and murdering its farmers and residents.

None of this even begins to address other undertakings by Trump toward the Jewish community, such as the pardoning of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, who six former attorneys-general, both Republican and Democrat, said had endured remarkably

unjust sentencing.

To be sure, there have been failures as well. Trump should have spoken out strongly and clearly against the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville last summer – not because neo-Nazis are in any way, in our time, as great a threat as Islamic terrorism is to Israel and the Jewish people, but, rather, in deference to the memory of the six million and to make morally clear that Nazis are the incarnation of evil and are the most wretched and vile people on earth.

But none of this negates how Trump has ushered in a new era where the United States stands squarely with Israel before the eyes of the world.

And what about character? I addressed the issue from a Jewish and biblical values perspective.

Unlike Christianity, which gives us Jesus Christ, a perfect man-god, a divine being, as an example by which to live and to emulate, there is not a single perfect person in the Hebrew Bible. From Abraham, who messes up with Ishmael, to Isaac, who raises an Esau, to Jacob, who favors Joseph, to Moses, who smites rather than speaks to the rock, to David and Bathsheba, our Bible is filled with great but flawed men and women, none of whom is perfect.

The reason? Whereas Christianity defines righteousness by perfection, Judaism defines righteousness through struggle.

The special man or woman is he or she who battles their own nature to do good.

In addition, whereas Christianity puts personal salvation – the question of whether you’re going to heaven – as its highest ideal, Judaism puts world redemption – the question of how much you have contributed to the community – before personal perfection. The main question in Judaism is not, Are you personally pious or righteous? but, rather, Have you left the world in better shape than how you found it?

That’s why Judaism has always extolled the virtue of those who contribute to the public good, even if they are of flawed character. Hama’aseh hu ha’ikar, it is action, not character, that is the most important.

This does not mean that character is unimportant. To the contrary, Judaism demands constantly that we strive for moral refinement and ethical excellence.

Rather, it means that personal character is subordinate to tikun olam, world improvement.

Harry Truman, we now know, expressed incredibly painful antisemitic comments in his personal diaries, calling Jews the cruelest people he had ever met. Yet he recognized the State of Israel within 12 minutes of David Ben-Gurion’s declaration of statehood, and that is what counts – his actions rather than his personal sentiments.

Richard Nixon’s recorded conversations are littered with antisemitic remarks. But when Israel was fighting for its very survival during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, he ordered the rearmament of Israel and helped to save the country from destruction.

With Trump, there is no such suggestion that he is in any way personally antisemitic, and the very suggestion would be ludicrous.

He supported a beloved daughter’s conversion to Judaism, has three Orthodox and observant Jewish grandchildren, who attend Jewish day school, and has populated his administration with some of the most pro-Israel public officials in modern history, such as Jason Greenblatt, David Friedman, Nikki Haley, Mike Pompeo, Steve Mnuchin, and John Bolton.

Our president may be an imperfect man, and his Twitter feed can at times be incendiary.

But on the question of whether he has advanced the credibility and security of Israel, has shown that he is an ally who has Israel’s back, and is prepared to stand with the Jewish people in world forums and incessant crisis, the answer must be a resounding yes.

Democratic Socialist who upset NY Rep. Joe Crowley said Israel committed a ‘massacre’ in Gaza JNS A Democratic Socialist who upset Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in a primary on Tuesday night had previously said that Israel had committed a “massacre” in the Gaza Strip.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, who soundly defeated Crowley as part of a party primary for New York’s 14th congressional district, which covers parts of Queens and the Bronx, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, which supports the BDS movement.

In a May 14 tweet, Ocasio-Cortez said Israel’s killing of Palestinians along the Gaza border was a “massacre,” and that “no state or entity is absolved of mass shootings of protesters.”

“There is no justification. Palestinian people deserve basic human dignity, as anyone else,” she said. “Democrats can’t be silent about this anymore.” Some 60 Palestinians were killed in “March of Return” protests orchestrated by the Palestinian terror group Hamas on May 14, which is also the secular date of Israel’s Independence Day. Hamas leaders later said that at least

50 of those killed were members of the terror group.

The primary victory of Ocasio-Cortez over Crowley—the No. 4 Democrat in the House of Representatives, who many viewed as vying for a top leadership position in the next year—may represent a broader shift in the Democratic Party towards the more progressive wing championed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is also a Socialist and has strongly condemned Israel’s actions in recent months.

In a statement, the Jewish Democratic Council of America, while congratulating Ocasio-Cortez on her victory, said it disagreed with her stance on Israel.

“We disagree with her past statement regarding Israel, as well as her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America, which supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions [BDS] movement targeting Israel.

In the coming days and months, we hope to learn more about Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s views, but at the moment, her position on Israel is not in line with our values.”

Jared Kushner has it all wrong on the Palestinians JNS STEPHEN M. FLATOW There’s a certain contempt that’s implicit in presuming to enlighten other people as to what they should care about and what is in their best interests.

We don’t yet know the details of the Israeli-Palestinian peace plan that presidential adviser Jared Kushner is preparing. But we do know how Kushner perceives the Palestinian Arabs. And he’s got them all wrong.

The White House has released an official transcript of Kushner’s June 24 interview with the Palestinian Arab newspaper Al Quds. It shows that Kushner subscribes to the oldest myth of the conflict—that average Palestinians are really just like us.

Here’s how he put it: “I believe that Palestinian people are less invested in the politicians’ talking points than they are in seeing how a deal will give them and their future generations new opportunities, more and better paying jobs and prospects for a better life.”

It’s often hard for Americans to grasp the fact that the values and concerns of the Palestinian Arabs are, in fact, radically different from those of America, Israel and the West. Average Palestinian Arabs really do want to destroy Israel. They really do hate Jews. The political culture of their society is not the same as the democratic political culture of the United States or Israel. Better-paying jobs are not their

highest goal.

You can blame their attitude on the Palestinian Authority’s educational system. You can blame it on decades of anti-Jewish propaganda on the P.A.’s television and radio programs, and in its newspapers and books. You can blame it on centuries of inculcation in the values of Islam and extreme Arab nationalism. But however you apportion the blame, it’s a fact.

In the interview, Kushner pleaded with Palestinian readers: “Don’t allow your grandfather’s conflict to determine your children’s future.” That’s how Americans think. But that’s not how Palestinians think. Americans put their grandfathers’ conflicts behind them. Palestinians consider their grandfathers’ agenda to be their own agenda.

“My dream,” Kushner told Al Quds, “is for the Israeli and Palestinian people to be the closest of allies in combating terror, economic achievement, advancements in science and technology, and in sharing a lifestyle of brotherhood, peace and prosperity.” Yes, that’s Kushner’s dream.

Mine, too. But that’s not the Palestinians’ dream. They are not interested in joining Israel in “combating terror” because they are the ones who perpetrate, glorify and financially reward terror.

There’s a certain contempt implicit in presuming to enlighten other people as to what they should care about and what is in their best interests. “These people

know their lives will only be improved by working out the issues and moving on,” said Kushner. Wrong again. He’s the one who is interested in “moving on.” Not the Palestinians.

“The Palestinian people are industrious, well-educated and adjacent to the Silicon Valley of the Middle East—Israel,” Kushner continued. “Israel’s prosperity would spill over very quickly to the Palestinians if there is peace.”

Does he think the Palestinians don’t know that? Does he think that they are simpletons who have never noticed, throughout the past century, how Jewish development of the country has benefited them and could benefit them a lot more if they made peace?

Of course, they have noticed. But they have chosen to do otherwise. When Israel expelled all Jews from Gaza, they left behind fully intact greenhouses for the Palestinians to use and enjoy. And enjoy them they did. They enjoyed burning them down.

Wait, that doesn’t make any sense! If the main concern of the Palestinians is economic prosperity, why would they burn down the hothouses that would give them economic prosperity? Because they care more about hating Jews than improving their own lives.

Which is why I don’t know whether to laugh or cry when I read Kushner’s statement that “the people of Gaza are hostages to bad leadership. … It’s time

for the Palestinian Authority and Hamas to stop using the people of Gaza as pawns.”

They’re not hostages, and they’re not pawns. They freely elected Hamas in a democratic election. They have chosen to march—by the thousands and tens of thousands—to the Gaza fence to throw Molotov cocktails at Israelis and sail flaming kites to burn down their fields.

Nobody forced them to go there. Nobody forced them to do that.

Descendants of Rachel Cohen praised William’s forebear, the Duke of Edinburgh’s mother, after she selflessly protected Mrs Cohen in her home – even using her deafness to foil Nazi search.

The duke privately met Evy and Philippe Cohen, the granddaughter and greatgrandson of Mrs Cohen, and was told by Mr Cohen: “We all owe our existence to the courage of Princess Alice.”

Speaking after chatting with the duke, in the Jerusalem residence of Israel’s prime minister, Mr Cohen said: “It was extremely moving. It allowed us to tell a really difficult but beautiful part of the family history.

“Prince William was very proud to know that his great-grandmother had saved our whole family. He seemed to know the story very well, and asked us questions regarding our family and how it happened.”

“People have been recognizing and coming up to me in the streets, pulling out their phones to show how they know about me.”

Rostov’s restored synagogue is just across the Don River from Rostov Arena, where the games are being played, making it a convenient stop for Jewish visitors. Galante stayed in a hotel quite a distance from the synagogue, and so on Friday night—while some 100 guests gathered for a large meal and farbrengen at the synagogue—made kiddush in his room on wine provided to him by the rabbi. The next day, he walked an hour-and-a-half, joining others for a Shabbat meal at the rabbi’s home.

“This has been an amazing experience for our community as well,” explains Danzinger.

“Here, who is usually the one who knows how to read Hebrew and pray? It is a rabbi.

So it’s beautiful for our community to see a large group of Jews, regular laypeople, on their vacation, come to synagogue, put on a tallit and pray.”

From West to East Two thousand miles separate Kaliningrad, Russia’s European outpost, and Ekaterinburg, its gateway to Siberia. In both cities, Chabad emissaries have opened their doors to welcome Jewish fans.

Since 1998, Rabbi David and Avital Shvedik have been a key part of reestablishing Jewish life in Kalningrad, which was the East Prussian city of Königsberg until the end of World War II. The city has a long and lustrous Jewish history, but was utterly destroyed during the war. The choral synagogue was ravaged on Kristallnacht, and the Jewish community deported in 1942. Recently, the Jewish community received the land upon which the choral synagogue once stood, and a full reconstruction of the historic structure is underway. A new 23-ton dome was lowered onto the structure earlier this year, which is

timed to be completed this November—80 years since the events of Kristallnacht.

“We have been seeing a constant stream of visitors coming in for kosher food and to put on tefillin,” says Shvedik, who notes that Kaliningrad, a Russian island of sorts, almost never gets foreign visitors.

At the other end of the World Cup map, in Ekaterinburg, Rabbi Zelig Ashkenazi, the chief rabbi of Russia’s fourth-largest city, has experienced a similar phenomenon “Hundreds of Jews from France, Uruguay, Peru, Mexico, Japan and other countries came to Ekaterinburg to participate in the World Cup,” he says. “Most of them come to the community center to participate in prayers and Shabbat meals and take advantage of the kosher cafeteria.”

Ekaterinburg’s impressive Rohr Chabad community center is located in the center of the city and includes a synagogue, men’s and women’s mikvahs, and a soup kitchen.

Chabad in St. Petersburg has seen a constant stream of visitors to its Choral Synagogue, as has Chabad in Samara, which, together with Chabad of Uruguay, released a short video inviting Uruguayan Jews to visit Samara’s towering synagogue and Jewish community center.

Galante, who returned home to Miami this week, sums up the general feeling he, his group, and the other Jews he spoke with felt regarding Jewish life in Russia: “It is extraordinary.”

The Bat Mitzvah program led by the talented Naomi Rubinstein, offers a stimulating educational program relating to the Jewish journey of a young woman today. The Caulfield Program is interactive, hands-on and contemporary. It addresses the traditional, like Shabbat and Challah baking – led by one of our commonly stalwarts Jeffrey Appel (OAM) – and the cutting-edge like body-image and being a young woman in a Me-too age.

At the Bat Mitzvah ceremony Rabbi Ralph spoke about the invisibility of the Jewish woman in the past. Even Miriam, one of the triumvirate of Jewish leadership, seems to be overlooked in

the honours and privileges given to her illustrious brothers. Today, he said, is about the growing visibility of women and especially Jewish women in Orthodoxy.

Even though there is still a way to go, Modern Orthodox women are rightfully taking up positions of leadership in shules and religious organisations across the world. “You too can do it girls.”

He added.

Naomi Rubinstein reminded the girls that the Hebrew word for faces – panim – is spelt exactly like the word for inwardness and substance – pnim. May your faces, she said, always reflect who you are on the inside.

South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation recently appointed a Friday night Chazzan to add to their already uplifting and warm Friday night service. Greg Hurvitz is an exceptionally gifted singer and has a wealth of experience singing in and leading choirs in a number of shules both locally and overseas.

Rabbi Daniel Rabin, Rabbi of South Caulfield Shule, said that he was delighted to have Greg on board and excited by the opportunities that Greg can bring to enhance the experience of our congregants on Friday nights.

We have also established a singing group called Kol Simcha that will singa-long with the Chazzan and encourage everyone to join in.

Chazzan Greg said that it is a great privilege to join the South Caulfield Hebrew congregation in a very exciting time in the life of the Shule.

YESHIVAH - BETH RIVKAH COLLEGES LISA FRENKEL The official opening of the new Beth Rivkah Primary building – The Spigler Family Wing – was an interactive delight of STEM demonstrations, coupled with a warm welcome to mark the occasion. The Queen’s birthday public holiday provided the perfect opportunity for over 300 donors, Rabbonim, parents, alumni, grandparents, community members, donors, Government and Council officials to flock to the impressive new building for a guided tour of the stateof-the-art classroom facilities, library hub, makerspace, STEM centre and breakaway spaces, a morning tea prepared by Beth Rivkah Culinary Arts students, and the official unveiling of the new facilities.

Taking place in the new state-of-theart ‘Loti & Victor Smorgon Family Library’, the morning’s events opened with an instrumental prelude from the talented Beth Rivkah Primary Ensemble and an entertaining musical interlude of vocal and choreographed movements by the Year 4 Beth Rivkah choir. Rabbi Yehoshua Smukler, Principal of Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah Colleges, welcomed the guests and expressed the school’s appreciation for the generous donors and Federal Government grants that have made this new wing possible. He noted, “This building is a true partnership of school, government and community support and enables us to keep our ‘open door’ policy and to continue to empower more students with a better future… The new building is a space for exploration and learning, for creativity and discovery.”

Attendees heard inspirational and heartfelt messages from major donors and Senator James Paterson, representing the

Australian Federal Government. From the Spotlight Foundation, Morry Fraid AM and Vivienne Fried addressed the attendees as donors of the Roth floor that has been dedicated in memory of Mrs Marianne Roth (Vivienne’s late mother). The Fried and Fraid families have had a long and close association with YBR, spanning more than 60 years. Morry highlighted his “strong emotional attachment to the school” and his passion for promoting Jewish education, while Vivienne reflected on her mother’s deep passion for education and expressed that she was “honoured to have this named after [her]”.

Senator James Paterson, in attendance to represent the Government’s contribution to the building, took to the floor and noted that there is “something special and unique about opening this school building [as] the vast majority of funds raised to construct the new building were raised from the school community, philanthropists and donors - a tribute to the Yeshivah – Beth

Rivkah community.” He highlighted Beth Rivkah as a “wonderful example of passion and dedication to education”, with its outstanding academic results and its focus of passing on Jewish values to the next generation.

A moving and heartfelt address from Saul Spigler expressed his joy at being a partner in the building and outlined his longstanding support of and connection to the Colleges – with this being his 60th year of association with the Colleges. He dedicated the new Spigler Family Wing in memory of his parents Kalman and Rochel Spigler A”H and his wife Beverly’s parents Harry and Betty Rubinstein A”H – who were “inspiring role models of how to lead a Jewish life… [and had a] tremendous… dedication to Jewish continuity and Jewish education.” He further conveyed, “We hope their memories and legacy will live on and be an inspiration to many who will learn and grow in this building.” He complimented the schools on providing education standards

and educators of such a high calibre. To express hakaras hatov (gratitude) Beth Rivkah Year 1 student Layla Spigler, Saul and Beverly’s granddaughter, presented them with a thank you gift on behalf of the school.

A video presentation provided a virtual tour through the new facility showing classrooms, library and makerspace in action, and was punctuated by student impressions of the new learning spaces. Interactive makerspace rotations were on display for guests to enjoy, after which Saul and Beverly Spigler along with their family took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, declaring the building officially open.

During the event a morning tea was enjoyed by guests, with several dishes expertly prepared by Beth Rivkah Year 9 and 10 Culinary Arts students. In addition, students in year 6 and 7 were instrumental in assisting on the day by ushering guests, providing waitressing support and presenting gifts during the formalities.

Beth Rivkah’s new wing will take learning at Beth Rivkah Primary to new heights – with additional classes that will encourage broad thinking, develop communication skills and advance students’ collaborative abilities – helping cultivate the thinkers and contributors of tomorrow.

Soup, Sandwiches and Spiel at Shule ST KILDA HEBREW CONGREGATION RABBI RONNIE FIGDOR The new Thursday Lunch Club at St Kilda Shule has gotten off to a resounding success. With soup, sandwiches and a spiel every second Thursday in the Shule’s newly refurbished Danglow Centre, everyone attending has come away with a great feeling of satisfaction. The lunch is open to the entire wider community at no charge! The breadth of ages (20’s to 30’s all the way to seniors) lends itself to a great feeling of inclusivity and sharing of community values when we all sit down together. In the first three sessions attendees heard from David

Michelson on personal safety and security, Dvir Abramovich (B’nai Brith Anti Defamation) and Sally Davis (CEO in the banking ombudsman’s office). On 5th July Minna Lederberger will tell her personal inspirational story of how she coped worth the loss of two legs while holidaying on the Gold Coast. The fortnightly event is organised and catered by the shule activities director Rabbi Pesach Steinberg, Activities Director. St Kilda Shule welcomes the entire community to attend and enjoy.

Jewish Experience for Politicians ST KILDA HEBREW CONGREGATION St Kilda Shule participated in the Jewish Community Council of Victoria’s recent and highly successful Politician’s Jewish Immersion Day which saw a group of politicians from across the political divide immersing themselves in Jewish community organisations in Melbourne for almost an entire day.

During the tour, the group of politicians visited Jewish Care Victoria, the Jewish Museum of Australia, the Jewish Holocaust Centre, Beth Weizmann and Melbourne’s iconic St Kilda Shule.

“This year’s Politician’s Jewish Immersion Day was a fantastic opportunity to expose politicians from across the political divide to the richness and depth of Judaism and of the Jewish community” said St Kilda Shule’s Rabbi Yaakov Glasman, “It was an honour to contribute to what was an outstandingly successful project of the JCCV and I look forward to further opportunities in the future”.

During their visit to St Kilda Shule, Rabbi Glasman had one hour to share insights into the Jewish religion and its many practises, as well as fielding a series of questions from participants. The Politician’s Jewish Immersion Day has run successfully in the past and has become an annual highlight for the Jewish community. It allows politicians representing local areas to personally experience

interaction with the Jewish community within their electorates and to ask any questions they may have in this regard.

During their visit to the St Kilda Shule, Rabbi Glasman also demonstrated to attendees the centrality of the Torah scroll to Jewish tradition and practice and provided insights into the sacred nature of

the scroll and the importance of decorum in the Synagogue while it’s being read.

“The politicians certainly appeared to have enjoyed their tour of the Jewish community, especially of our beautiful Synagogue interior, and I feel it was overall a productive and highly educational experience for them”, Rabbi Glasman enthused.

King David celebrates Grandparents’ Shabbat KING DAVID SCHOOL Students from Prep - Year 2 invited their grandparents and special friends to join them at School to celebrate Shabbat.

Students impressed their guests with their knowledge of Shabbat rituals and song and their joy was infectious.

The educators have provided wonderful learning experiences for the students who demonstrated genuine connection to this sacred Jewish custom.

For those grandparents and special friends who would have been to this special event in the last two years, they would have witnessed the significant growth in the students’ understanding of the prayers and rituals.

The overwhelming feeling throughout the morning was pure nachas (pride)!

Mount Scopus Bat Mitzvah options MOUNT SCOPUS COLLEGE

Mount Scopus College’s unique Mother-Daughter Bat Mitzvah Program offers a choice of options for families amidst the plethora of wonderful Bat Mitzvah programs in Melbourne.

The power, authenticity and excitement of trans-generational learning not only lies at the heart of the program’s success, it is also the finest means by which Jewish wisdom is passed from generation to generation.

The program comprises a number of options and participants can choose to take part in all or some of the options.

The first choice involves mothers and daughters learning together in the evening once a month, over the course of the school year. Sessions are led by one of Scopus’ experienced Jewish Studies teachers. At each session, a significant Jewish woman or group of women is discussed and an appreciation for studying Jewish texts and learning about Jewish women as role models is developed. Understanding fundamental Jewish values such as family, community, chesed, Ahavat Israel, commitment and love of Torah underpinned all sessions.

Through discussions and activities, participants learn how they can become more involved and active members of the Jewish community in various ways.

Mount Scopus College Mother-Daughter Shabbaton weekend

Assistance in the preparation and writing of their dvar torah is another aspect of the Bat Mitzvah program.

The girls are able to choose a topic of interest such as the weekly parasha, an inspirational Jewish woman or a Jewish festival. Students are offered up to eight

half-hour sessions to explore their topic of interest and are given guidance in developing their thoughts and ideas into a written speech.

An end-of-year ceremony marking the conclusion of the learning program is offered by the College in Term 4. At

the ceremony, the girls delivered their dvar Torah before family and friends.

The ceremony is attended by College Principal, Rabbi James Kennard and Deputy Principal and Director of the Alter Family School of Jewish Studies and Ivrit, Avi Cohen, and is followed by special morning tea.

Recently, a group of Mount Scopus Year 6 girls and their mothers shared a special Bat Mitzvah Shabbaton weekend away.

The group enjoyed a fun and meaningful program which included a pre-Shabbat creativity session, followed by Kabbalat Shabbat, discussions, learning, walking, feasting, Havdalah and plenty of games and laughs.

The Shabbaton was a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other better in a beautiful, relaxed setting.

Thank you to the mums and daughters who all contributed in different ways, and a special thank you to the wonderful Scopus Sherut girls who brought along lots of ruach.

The Mount Scopus Bat Mitzvah program has been designed to prepare young women for their journey into a period of growth, inspiration and self-reflection as they build strong foundations in Judaism.

A Solid Jewish Foundation At Bialik BIALIK COLLEGE At Bialik College, Jewish learning takes place in a way that allows students to take ownership of the way they celebrate their heritage and religion, whilst reflecting on how they can express this as a Jew living in Australia, as part of their immediate community and as part of their family.

The learning occurs as a ‘spiral curriculum’, where each year, students build on their prior knowledge. Stories, songs and role-play are the vehicles for the youngest children in the ELC and Primary school to encourage a passion for Jewish history, culture and traditions. With a child-centred approach, all aspects of Judaism are woven in to the fabric of daily life at Bialik. The students say brachot (blessings) over their food, celebrate chaggim (festivals) and learn prayers that form the foundation of Judaism, like the Shema.

From this base, knowledge about their Jewish culture expands with more depth and detail. Jewish customs and heritage are taught alongside tfillot (prayers) and Hebrew language so that students advance through their school years with a solid Jewish foundation.

In Year 2, students receive their siddurim (prayer books), from which great explorations take place. As prayers are learned, they are unpacked to find meaning that resonates with the students and any and all questions are welcomed. No question is out of bounds – as a Jewish school with a pluralist ethos, we understand that every family in our community has their unique expression of Judaism and so every child will have questions relevant to their own understanding.

As students progress to Years 4 and

5, it becomes important to link Jewish learning to concepts that are relatable and relevant to them. For instance, when learning about Rosh Hashanah, Primary students have discussions around Bialik’s value of ‘Responsibility’. They explore the stories of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel, investigating the ways in which the characters failed to take responsibility for their actions.

They relate this back to themselves, looking at how they intend to take responsibility in the New Year. They also discuss how Responsibility is a fundamental quality demonstrated by a competent leader and how this value can be carried out in their own leadership endeavours.

Through these investigations, students learn the key concepts of each festival and are able to carry out the mitzvot related to it such as, in the case of Rosh Hashanah, self-reflection and repentance.

As a proudly Zionist school, one aspect of Jewish learning that is integral to life at Bialik, is a love for and connection to the land, people and the language of Israel. For over 70 years, the College has been teaching ‘Ivrit B’Ivrit, an idea that deeply engages students in the language, increasing their understanding.

A core belief of Bialik College is respect for individual choice of expression when it comes to Jewish identity. Principal Jeremy Stowe-Lindner’s comment succinctly captures this sentiment: “Bialik’s healthy approach to Judaism best reflects the plurality of our thriving and dynamic Melbourne Jewish community.”

Which sleep training technique is best for your child?

THE SLEEP COACH CHERYL FINGLESON One of the first things I’ll tell you as a gentle sleep consultant, is ‘sleep is a learnt skill’. Depending on temperament, some babies learn easily, and some need a little help, just like most things.

When I create a sleep solution, I want your child to fall asleep calmly and independently and without tears.

There are a few different techniques, and when you start asking around, you might find that it’s hard to know which one you feel comfortable with.

They are not all the same, and understanding the differences can be confusing - especially if you haven’t had a good night’s sleep in a while. I have listed four of the most common techniques.

Having a set bedtime routine and staying consistent is key in achieving your goal. Each family is different and once you’re sleep training your child, pick a routine that you believe will work for your baby and your family, and stick to it.

Cry it out, Controlled crying, Pick up put down and Sleep Shuffle - What does it mean?

Cry It Out (CIO) This ‘tough love’ philosophy of sleep training was very popular in previous generations when it was thought that a child would be ‘spoilt’ if they were comforted. Cry It Out was borne out of a fear that comforting your child to sleep would result in disrupted sleep habits that would result in the child being unable to sleep alone. We now know that there is no such thing as ‘spoiling your baby’.

Getting comfort from their carers is essential in creating a strong and secure attachment, and it will in fact make your baby more confident, knowing that you’re there to guide and support them through any challenges.

The Cry It Out technique means that the baby is left on their own even if they start to cry, and this supposedly teaches the baby to self-settle and soothe so they don’t rely on a carer to respond to their cries in a certain way.

In my experience, this method is very stressful for both parents and babies, and I can assure you that babies don’t wake up at night to cause trouble.

They cry because they need a feed, comfort or even pain relief. After all, crying is the main form of communication for babies. They don’t have any other way to tell us how they feel! Ensuring them that you will be there if they need you, is essential for your child’s healthy development.

Controlled Crying This technique is also known as ‘Ferberizing’ after the American doctor Dr Richard Ferber. The method suggests that you let your child cry for a period of time, while checking in and comforting them at intervals after they have been put down for their nap or night-time sleep. The time between comforting and leaving them alone is gradually increased, usually in minute-long stages.

Theoretically, the child learns to self-soothe while instilling the reassurance of knowing their carer will come in frequently to check on them.

Often parents - and children - find the process stressful and upsetting, and this method could potentially teach the child to cry more, as when you return, your child treats your presence as a

reward.

Parents who chose a more gentle approach might have to spend longer working at it to see results, but find the process far less upsetting than other, harsher methods.

The Gentle Soothing Way (Pick up put down) This is a pick-up-put-down method, which can be good when babies want and need full physical contact when they’re upset. This involves following a set bedtime routine, then putting your baby down in their cot or basket when they are dozy but not asleep. If the child cries, pick them up, reassure them quietly and firmly by saying ‘night night, sleep time now’, then soothing and shuh-ing until they stop crying and then putting them back down. If they cry again, you repeat the process until the child settles.

Some babies prefer stroking or being patted when they need comfort while trying to get to sleep. That might also be a better approach for older, heavier babies as it’s less stress on your back.

Sleep Shuffle (No-Cry Solution) As a gentle paediatric sleep consultant I find this technique to be very successful and the lest stressful.

Also known as the ‘gradual retreat method’, this works best when you’ve already established a regular bedtime routine with your child but want them to sleep independently - and without tears.

Here’s how it works: Choose a place where you can sit beside your baby’s cot at bedtime. When you put your baby down, you reassure them by saying ‘night, night, sleep time now’ and then you sit down next to them. If they start to cry, pat them, shush or make soothing sounds to help them settle. Stay in your position until your child is asleep, don’t try and sneak out before. Over two or three days, you move your position further away from the cot, until you are able to leave the room and let your child go to sleep without you there.

This technique works well with babies who are used to being held or nursed to sleep as it can be done in a very gradual and gentle manner.

The first stage can even be cuddling your baby in their cot, the second stage patting or resting your hand on their back, the third, sitting very close to the cot and then moving slowly away over a few nights. This is a very gentle technique where your baby learns to self-settle without causing any separation anxiety.

Naturally, your baby is unique and you know your baby best, so have the confidence to adapt your bedtime routine to work for you, and it will help your feel secure while you sleep train and for the future. The sooner you get started the sooner you all sleep!

What Are the Three Weeks?

CHABAD.ORG The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period when we mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple and our launch into exile.

The period begins on the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, a fast day that marks the day when the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans in 69 CE. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the 9th of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people.

Observances: There are various mourning-related customs and observances that are followed for the entire three-week period (until midday of the 10th of the Hebrew month of Av, or—if that date falls on Friday—the morning of that day). During this period, we lessen the extent of our rejoicing. We don’t:

• Conduct weddings. (Engagement parties – without music – are allowed until Rosh Chodesh Av.) • Play musical instruments or listen to music.

• Recite the Shehecheyanu blessing.

Thus, we do not wear new clothing or eat fruit which we have not yet eaten this season so that we will not be required to recite Shehecheyanu.

• Take a haircut or shave. Many Sephardic communities permit haircuts

and shaving until the week of Tisha b’Av (in other words, until the Saturday night before the fast).

17 Tammuz is a fast day, on which we refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to nightfall.

All the laws of mourning are suspended on Shabbat. This includes the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av themselves— when they fall on Shabbat, the fast days are postponed until Sunday, and the Shabbat is joyously celebrated. The Rebbe stated on numerous occasions that on these Shabbats we must increase our joy, and add an extra tasty dish to our meals, to emphasize that we are not in a state of mourning.

Those who mourn the destruction of Jerusalem will merit seeing it rebuilt with the coming of Moshiach. The final Nine Days of the Three Weeks are a time of intensified mourning. Starting on the first of Av, we refrain from eating meat or drinking wine, and from wearing freshly laundered clothes.

A highlight of his swimming career has been donning “the green and gold” to represent on the Australian Junior Team and winning a silver medal at the 2014 Junior Pan Pacific Games.

Benno has won many Swimming Victoria Championships at both the Age and Open level. Recently he competed in the 2017 Mare Nostrum Swimming Series in Europe and at the Swimming Australia Selection Trials for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

He has just travelled to Singapore representing Swimming Victoria where he won a Gold Medal in 4 by 100 Medley Relay and a Silver Medal in the 4 by 100 Freestyle Relay. He will be competing at another 2 Australian selection trials in 2018 – the Pan

Pacific Swimming Trials (for selection to the Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo August 2018) and the Swimming Australia National Short Course Championships (for selection to the FINA Short Course World Championships in Hangzhou December 2018)Currently studying part-time (Engineering/Science at Monash University) and training fulltime, he is focused on his long-term ambition to Medal at a Swimming Australia Open event and to be a member of the Australian Dolphins team.

A worthy recipient of the inaugural Nachum Buch Swimming Scholarship, Benno will be using the funds to assist with travel and allied health expenses.

The Nachum Buch Maccabi Australia Scholarship Fund has been established with the foresight and generosity of Nachum and his family to help those athletes with a dream in aquatic sports.

It provides a yearly grant of up to $2000 to athletes to assist them on the path to achieving at an elite level.

Each year the grant will be made to the individual or individuals who best fit the scholarship selection criteria and is deemed the most deserving by the selection panel.

Funding can be used to pay for such legitimate items as travel to tournaments, coaching expenses, registration or nomination fees and the like.

Nachum wishes the inaugural recipients of the scholarship, Matt and Benno “every success at 2018 swimming competitions and in their future swimming careers”.

2018 Maccabi Australia Rudi Roth Sports Scholarship Awarded

MACCABI AUSTRALIA

The winner of the 2018 Maccabi Australia Rudi Roth Sports Scholarship is cyclist Riley Hart.

2017 was a challenging year for Riley with a persistent knee injury and VCE. Regardless, he has achieved some excellent results over the last year, with the following highlights; • Gold medal and under-19 Australian record at the 2017 Australian National Track Championships in Brisbane in the 4000m Team Pursuit.

• A win in the second Australian Junior Road World’s qualifying event, the Mersey Valley Tour.

Riley scorched home in the stage one individual time trial to win from a stacked field of Australia and NZ’s top under-19 junior cyclists.

• Competing in the Elite category for the first time at the Victorian State Championships. His two rides in the individual pursuit, along with his qualifying ride gave him direct qualification to represent Victoria at 2018 Track Nationals. His ride of 4.29.234 was the fastest at states for over a decade.

• First Elite Gold Medal at 2018 Track National Championships in February as a member of the Victorian Team Pursuit. Victoria’s time of 3 minutes and 58.829 seconds secured Hart and his team a place in a select group of athletes who have ridden a sub-four-minute team pursuit.

Riley continues to focus on elite competition with the intention to compete in June/July 2018 in Europe. The scholarship will contribute to funding travel and accommodation for this 8-week stint of racing.

The Maccabi Australia Rudi Roth Sports Scholarship was established in 2015 to assist emerging athletes on the path to achieving at an elite level.

2016 Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva – Rhythmic Gymnastics Double Bronze Medalist for Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games 2017 Marc Fridman – Snooker Victorian U18 Champion 2018 (second year running) Rudi’s nephew Sonny Roth continues to represent the Roth Family on the Maccabi Australia Selection Committee for the Rudi Roth Sports Scholarship Award. This year the Selection Committee has been impressed with the calibre of nominees and made their decision based not only on sporting achievement, but also where they felt that the scholarship would have the greatest impact.

Sonny, spoke of Rudi’s wish in establishing this award to genuinely assist an athlete on their journey to become elite. Sonney is “certain that Riley will continue to achieve in his sport of Cycling. We wish Riley the best of luck in perusing the next stage of his sporting career in Europe.”

Maccabi Australia is honoured to be able to present the 2018 scholarship to Riley and is extremely grateful to Rudi Roth and his family for making the award possible. Rudi had a long and wonderful history with Maccabi assisting emerging athletes on the path to achieving at an elite level. Originally born in in Poland, Rudi came to Australia in 1933 as a toddler. Having overcome Rickets at age 12, Rudi had an illustrious squash career internationally and in NSW and Victoria.
