lease take a few moments to check out the center spread (pages 20A-21A) in this edition of The Jewish News, which explains the good work we do through our Jewish Federation. This chart serves as the dividing line between the “old” and “new” approach to building an effective, engaging and outcome-driven Jewish Federation and Jewish community. If somebody asks me, “Why should I give to Federation when I could just give directly to the places I feel strongly about?” my answer is: you should give directly to the places you feel strongly about. Giving to Federation shouldn’t replace your other Howard Tevlowitz giving and it isn’t the same. Federation adds value through the work we do, and should be something you give to directly for its own sake and because of its own merits. When people ask what the Federation does, I say

the Federation is in the best position to do the most good in the following ways: We help those Jews most in need – wherever and whenever that might be, including our extended Jewish family around the world, often the poorest of Jews. We connect as many Jews as possible to Jewish life and enable them to find their own connections to Jewish community and exploration. And we work to solve the problems and challenges facing the Jewish people. Yes, we do so through helping and making grants and allocations to partners, but we also develop programs in our Jewish community and beyond. Thus Federation is a good investment in its own right. And on a meta-level, this also means Federation is (and needs to be) something more than just an aggregator and re-allocator of funds that people give. This is a shift in the value proposition and business model that has been taking place in many Federations – and probably needs to take place in lots more. At The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, we identify, evaluate and address Jewish com-
