SPECIAL EVENT FILM

TUESDAY, MARCH 14TH, 7pm BEATRICE FRIEDMAN THEATER, JEWISH FEDERATION CAMPUS For many Americans, the Star Trek series and the character of Mr. Spock, brilliantly portrayed by the late, great Jewish actor, Leonard Nimoy, will forever resonate fondly in their memories. Now, Adam Nimoy, Leonard’s son, has directed For the Love of Spock, a lighthearted look at the man behind Spock’s pointy ears. While the film includes entertaining clips and interviews with fans and actors from the original and current incarnations of Star Trek, it also examines the rocky father/ son relationship that existed between them. The first screening of this film on March 14 will be both a tribute to Leonard Nimoy, a proud Jewish actor, and a Trekkie Celebration. If you want to wear a Trekkie costume, please do—but you can certainly come without one!

BOGDAN’S JOURNEY

FLORIDA PREMIERE

A deeply moving documentary that tells the unique story of Dr. Bogdan Bialek’s dedicated pursuit of a terrible truth that had been buried for 60 years—the merciless attack on 120 Holocaust survivors who had sought shelter in Kielce, Poland, in 1946—and the role of the townspeople in perpetrating this vicious atrocity, the last Jewish pogrom in Europe. Determined to heal a historical wound and reconcile Poles and Jews, he courageously persuades people to embrace their past, and launches a crusade to commemorate the Kielce massacre and honor its victims, even while most of his neighbors continue to deny their crimes. His journey is a heroic story of commitment in the search for truth. The evening will be dedicated to the innocent victims of that horrendous crime.

THE LAST MENTSCH

Poignant, funny and deeply moving, The Last Mentsch is a powerful narrative feature about friendship and healing. Born as Menachem Teitelbaum, Marcus Schwarz escaped Auschwitz with his life, only to run far away from his Jewishness. With no synagogue, Jewish friends or family, the hardened old man has done such an effective job of creating a new non-Jewish identity that, when faced with his own mortality, he can’t convince the rabbis to bury him in a Jewish cemetery in Cologne. Determined to establish his Jewish ancestry, Marcus enlists the help of Gßl, a brash, chain-smoking Turkish woman with a troubled history of her own, and they travel to a small village on the Hungarian-Romanian border, an emotional journey that will irrevocably change them both.

THE PEOPLE VS. FRITZ BAUER

Based on real people and events, this powerful and engrossing feature film is the story of the man who had a secret hand in bringing high-ranking Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann to justice. Fritz Bauer was a German Jew who’d spent time in a concentration camp and finished the war in exile in Denmark. As an attorney general in West Germany in 1957, he worked to track down former Nazi officials because he believed a new democratic society required that kind of accountability. When Bauer receives word that the war criminal Adolf Eichmann may be hiding in Argentina, he launches an investigation that is repeatedly thwarted by superiors and underlings still sympathetic to the Third Reich. As a result, he is forced to undertake a treasonous act that could put him in prison. The film is gripping, emotional, and provocative.

FOR THE LOVE OF SPOCK

An entertaining, lighthearted look at Leonard Nimoy, the man behind Spock’s pointy ears. The film includes fans and actors from the original and current incarnations of Star Trek, plus footage of Leonard Nimoy in the numerous roles that were overshadowed by his most famous creation. But the film is also an often painful examination of the rocky father/son relationship that existed between filmmaker Adam Nimoy and his famous father. Released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, Nimoy’s documentary originally planned to focus specifically on Mr. Spock, but when Leonard Nimoy died in 2015, his son widened the scope of his film to encompass his father’s entire life and career. The Tues., March 14th, 7 p.m. screening is both a tribute to Leonard Nimoy, a great Jewish actor, and a Trekkie Celebration. Put aside your inhibitions and put on a Trekkie costume — or come without one! A prize will be awarded for the best costume.

SHALOM ITALIA

A touching and humorous documentary about three Italian Jewish brothers who get together for an unforgettable family reunion in the hope of finding the mysterious cave that saved their family from being deported to the camps during World War II. Emmanuel, Andrea, and Bubi spent several of their formative years hiding in a manmade cave built by their father in the Tuscan mountains while the Nazis occupied Italy. Seventy years later, now as different as can be, the brothers retrace their steps and compare childhood experiences. Despite their differing and imperfect memories and their aging bodies, the brothers resolve to accomplish their goal, while eating their way through Tuscany. These kindred spirits spend countless hours trekking through the thick Tuscan forest to create a new memory, one that will serve as the basis for a brotherly bond that will remain for the rest of their lives.

BABA JOON

A warm and touching feature film about the universal conflict between the immigrant father, who treasures his culture and wants to pass it on to the next generation, and his son, who wants to forge a new path and build a new identity in a new country. This awardwinning film depicts the struggle of every man standing at the crossroads of heritage vs. individual freedom, and the difficulty of bridging the generation gap in a world that is ever-changing. Yitzhak runs the turkey farm his father built with his own two hands after the family emigrated from Iran to Israel. When his son Moti turns thirteen, Yitzhak teaches him the trade, hoping that he will continue the proud family tradition. But Moti doesn’t like working in the turkey barn, and Yitzhak takes Moti’s refusal as a personal rejection. The arrival of Darius, the uncle from America, sets off a chain of events that will undermine the familial harmony, and Yitzhak will learn that his son is just as stubborn as he is. THE KIND WORDS

A quirky, wry comedy-drama about three siblings who seek to uncover the greatest secret their late mother never told them: that the man who raised them is not their biological father. This emotionally rich film follows three Jewish Israeli siblings - Dorona and brothers Netanel and Shai - on a road trip from Israel across France to discover the truth about their real father. On their journey, the siblings achieve a tender balance as their definitions of family, identity, and ethnicity are tested. This is a beautifully textured family drama that touches on a wealth of interpersonal issues with charm and grace. This sixth feature from writer-director Shemi Zarhin explores an unraveling family secret and the bittersweet journey of self-discovery that follows.

FIRE BIRDS

A humorous, charming, yet melancholy feature about a down-on-his-luck Israeli detective who must unlock the secrets of three spry Holocaust survivors to solve a vexing crime—a murder mystery that enticingly entwines past and present. When the body of 80-year-old Amikom is found floating in the Yarkon River, with stab wounds and a number tattooed on his forearm, the case is assigned to gruff but likable Amnon, who has returned to duty after a lengthy suspension. Living apart from his wife and daughter, he struggles to bring the unwanted case to a quick close. The investigation leads him to a tattoo parlor and a club of Holocaust survivors, who seek solace in romantic recollections of their pre-war world. As the plot flashes back through the victim’s final months, a story of deadly dalliances, desire, loneliness and rejection emerges, connecting two characters of different generations, both spurned by society. MOOS

A charming, contemporary comedy set in Amsterdam’s Jewish community about a young woman who has always dreamed of going to acting school, but was held back by the need to take care of her grieving father after her mother’s death. But when Sam, Moos’s best friend growing up, comes back to town and encourages her to start a life of her own, she decides to prove to him and to herself that she can, in fact, achieve her dreams. But the course is not without its obstacles. There’s the handsome singing teacher, her father’s new girlfriend, the fact that she didn’t actually get accepted to acting school, and her growing affection for her childhood friend. The film is enhanced by delightful flashbacks of Moos and Sam as children.

DIRTY WOLVES

Inspired by real events, Dirty Wolves is a gripping feature that explores a little-known chapter of World Word II history. In Spain’s rural Galicia region in 1944, with the support of the Franco regime, Nazi forces have taken over a tungsten mine, using political prisoners and slave laborers to mine the precious element the Nazis need for manufacturing weapons. Two local sisters take different paths of resistance in this dramatic thriller: Manuela is secretly helping Allied forces hidden in the region who are trying to stop the strategic metal from reaching German factories; and Candela is helping Jews escape by guiding them to safety in Portugal. The film features strong performances and beautiful cinematography.
