OUR MISSION
To strengthen Jewish life and identity in our community, provide for Jewish people in need, and to promote support for Israel.
Dear Friends: Happy 60TH! We began 2019 by marking our 60th year when several hundred people turned out to celebrate our founding on February 25, 1959. For six decades, The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee has been helping Jews locally, in Israel and around the world, promoting our community every step of the way. As we begin our seventh decade of service to the Sarasota-Manatee community, we are humbled by knowing that over the years our Federation has helped hundreds of thousands of people. Through programs like financial aid for a Holocaust survivor, hospital visitation by our Community Chaplain, one of our many Federation-sponsored missions to our beloved Israel, PJ Library books provided to young Jewish children or engagement at one of our many cultural events such as The Jewish Film Festival or Women’s Day, we are at the very center of Jewish life. We take our responsibility seriously to provide for the evolving needs of the most vulnerable in our community while ensuring an abundance of impactful and meaningful experiences for anyone looking to connect with Jewish life. We meet Jews on their terms, where they are, whether it be as a traditional Jew or a cultural one. Our impact this past year was most felt:

Through our ‘babies to bubbies’ programming that spans the spectrum, touching young children, families, adults and seniors. We work hard to keep our programs relevant and vital to all.

In the second year of the LIFE & LEGACY™ program, when our Federation secured many more commitments from the community, bringing the total number of legacy donors to 78, representing an estimated $4.8 million for the Federation.
•
In our exploration of how to better serve our community by re-imagining our 32-acre campus on McIntosh Road. As a result of the generosity of Larry Greenspon, we renamed our campus The Larry Greenspon Family Campus for Jewish Life and began a several-year process to re-build, re-shape and re-design our campus for the realities and needs of today’s Jews.
A key image of our future campus is our Welcome Chuppah (pictured on the back page) and generously funded by the Epstein Family. Just as a Chuppah represents a Jewish home, this Chuppah symbolizes the Federation as YOUR JEWISH HOME in our local community. As we continue to plan and grow, we are committed to finding the very best solutions to invest in a future that will benefit us all. Thanks to the thousands of donors who have helped build the Sarasota-Manatee area into such a vibrant, growing Jewish community. Our future is indeed bright. With gratitude,

Your support is lending a hand to those less fortunate, whether in Sarasota-Manatee, Israel or any of 70 countries on five continents where Jews live. Basic needs and emergency services are critical, such as food, shelter and medical care. Through our funding of JFCS of the Suncoast, Inc., seniors and Holocaust survivors are cared for through holiday celebrations, chaplain visits and financial assistance. These at-risk populations are able to age in their homes with dignity and independence because of your support.

was distributed for assistance to JFCS and overseas partners in 2018.
How you are caring for the vulnerable: •
415 seniors, living in 12 residential facilities, participated in Jewish holiday observances

365 hospitalized Jewish individuals were visited by our Community Chaplain and JFCS volunteers

140 Holocaust survivors were assisted with financial aid and dental work and most received home care
• $41,961 was provided to local Jewish families for financial assistance

The future of the Jewish community begins with our Jewish youth and we are committed to providing them fun and engaging experiences. We offer children free books with our PJ Library program, overnight camp grants and religious school scholarships. Jewish teens are provided an opportunity to connect with other teens, learn about Israel and gain leadership skills through the Shapiro Teen Engagement Program. In addition, we hold several events throughout the year remembering the Holocaust and provide speakers to present at local schools about the Holocaust. We engage Jews of all ages and stages of life through various social, educational and cultural arts experiences.
We are committed to a strong and vibrant Jewish community, one that meets the needs of Jews from all backgrounds and levels of observance.

How you are nurturing Jewish life: • 416 children and their families connected with others at PJ Library and PJ Our Way events • $32,585 in religious school scholarships was provided to 85 area children • $87,445 was granted to 83 children to help them experience Jewish overnight camp • $79,000 in college scholarships was provided to 18 Sarasota-Manatee students •
151 area college students celebrated Shabbat and Jewish holidays with our Gulf Coast Hillel
• 184 people attended the Federation's Newcomers event • 647 people commemorated the Holocaust by attending Holocaust-themed events •

$15,680,079 has been promised through the LIFE & LEGACY™ program to benefit 11 local organizations and ensure the future of the Jewish community. Our Federation invested in the LIFE & LEGACY ™ initiative in 2017 to build community now and into the future. Our Federation plays an integral role in supporting humanitarian and cultural needs of the Jewish and non-Jewish local community. Our impact is felt through partnerships with synagogues and local organizations such as All Faiths Food Bank, Embracing Our Differences, Perlman Music Program/Suncoast and Education Foundation of Sarasota County.
The Heller CRC is committed to building key relationships within the community to advance common interests through advocacy and to fight anti-Semitism. Area college students are provided a Jewish home away from home through Gulf Coast Hillel.

local leaders became ambassadors and advocates for Israel after participating in an Interfaith Community Leader mission.
We are committed to our support for Israel and will always be an advocate for the Jewish state and its people. We lead several mission trips throughout the year for our community, both Jewish and inter-cultural, to feel connected to our homeland and witness the state’s leadership on the world stage in medicine, technology, agriculture and more. We offer local events celebrating Israel and featuring Israeli experts.
At the core of our work beats the heart and soul of Israel.
How you are strengthening our relationships with Israel: •
905 people learned about Israel by attending Heller CRC events, including our annual Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration and Community Lecture with Daniel Gordis

250,000 people saw the 4th annual Shonim B’Yachad exhibit, the Israel version of Embracing Our Differences, at Jaffa Port, an effort begun by our Federation

Federation provided $8,273 to enable high school students to travel to Washington, D.C. to attend the AIPAC Policy Conference and participate in hands-on Israel advocacy

Federation provided $25,429 to five local participants to experience the annual March of the Living trip to Poland and Israel

people in SarasotaManatee showed their support for the shooting victims of the Tree of Life synagogue.
On October 29, 2018, thirteen people lost their lives when a gunman opened fire at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Within 48 hours, our community mobilized to hold a vigil in their memory at Sarasota County Fairgrounds. Eleven area rabbis and cantors participated in the service. Police reported 2,200 local citizens attended to show their respect and love.

Annual Campaign – $2,484,791 The Annual Unrestricted Campaign raises money to meet the needs of our partner agencies in Sarasota-Manatee, Israel and around the world. Program/Event Sponsorship – $879,926 Sponsorship income allows our Federation to produce impactful programs like the Newcomers event, Just Reel Films, Community Lecture and more. Ticket Sales – $157,141 Income derived from ticket sales for events such as the Jewish Film Festival, Women's Day, lecture series and other programs. Directed Giving – $733,106 These are donor-directed dollars that benefit local, national and international non-profit organizations, enabling donors to meet their philanthropic goals with the assistance of our Federation. Campus Rental Income – $207,500 Annual revenue is generated from renting space and buildings on the Federation campus, offsetting the costs of operating our campus and community programs. Ad Sales – $210,115 Our Federation sells ads in our monthly Jewish News, annual Shalom SRQ Magazine and weekly eblast. Endowment Fund – $2,127,201 Net contributions to our Federation’s Jewish Community Endowment Fund.
The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is the central fundraising and planning organization for the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish community. The Federation engages in a wide range of financial resource development efforts in order to ensure a stream of funding that will help the community remain strong and vibrant.
