Dear Friends,

Benjamin Franklin was correct when he said “from adversity comes opportunity.” This past year has been like none other. It has been a test of our community’s compassion and resilience. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down, we turned that enormous adversity into an opportunity to help the individuals and institutions around us who so desperately needed the support of our Jewish community. The way we all came together was astounding. With your generosity, for the first time in our 60-year history, the Federation raised over $1,000,000 enabling us to help more vulnerable people, both in our tri-county area and globally with emergency financial assistance, food assistance, mental health counselling and much more. Our local Jewish Family Service and JCC as well as all of the synagogues and Chabad houses in Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties received extra funding for enriching services and programming to keep us all connected as the pandemic drags on. We were also able to give The Wilf Campus for Senior Living, our local Jewish nursing home and assisted living facility, substantial funding to purchase PPE for residents and staff. While we were looking after the immediate needs of the Jewish community here and abroad, we also launched a new program to ensure the future of all of our institutions and to strengthen them to be able to weather any storm we may face down the road. The program is the Life & Legacy Program, and has already had an impact by helping to grow our community’s endowment funds and put us all on more solid ground. The energy with which our community responded to this crisis was unprecedented. Thank you for your unwavering support, faith and partnership in the work we are doing on behalf of our Jewish community. Good things take time, but really great things can happen in the blink of an eye. We will continue to work hard to care for those around us, and we look forward to serving our community with great strength for the next 60 years. Warmly,

Ellen Teller President

An additional $26,000 was raised for The Wilf Campus for Senior Living to provide PPE to residents and staff, protecting our elderly neighbors at the very start of the pandemic.

A New Virtual Reality During the COVID-19 stay at home order, single father of 5 children, ages 9 to 14, was referred to our partner Jewish Family Service of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties. An involved father doing his best to meet his family’s needs with few financial resources or support, he was struggling with the new challenges of remote learning and cancelled activities. A JFS Social Worker spoke with the dad to get to know him and better understand his concerns and family needs. With 5 remote learners and just two laptops, limited access to the internet, financial struggles, and the stress of the pandemic, JFS was able to assess areas of support and provide resources to get the family back on track. In addition to social services, JFS arranged an ongoing Family Mentor volunteer, two additional computers to help with remote learning, and the two eldest children received bicycles donated by a generous community member. At the beginning of his time with JFS, the father shared “I just really need moral support. It is hard being alone and not having anyone.” He later told the Social Worker “I do believe I have been getting the right help at the right time.”

Making Lasting Connections

Our Women's Philanthropy Division is dedicated to raising funds & educating community members about Federation & important Jewish causes. We hosted engaging virtual events through our Women's Philanthropy Division. In September 2020, we held a fun cocktail party featuring a local bartender who taught us the basics of making delicious drinks. In April 2021, we hosted a Trivia night and tested our knowledge of famous Jewish women, Federation facts, New Jersey history & Israel.

Fun screen shot!

Our Community Relations Committee (CRC) is the Israel advocacy & public affairs arm of the Federation. This year, the CRC: Ensured that Holocaust Survivors from our local community received priority appointments for COVID-19 vaccines. Led three virtual days of lobbying with nearly 50 participants from our community, speaking with both federal & local lawmakers, advocating for our most vulnerable community members, reinforcing the critical fight against Anti-Semitism, and emphasizing the importance of the US/Israel relationship. Gathered with 30 community members for a proactive conversation with Rabbi Isaiah Joseph Rothstein who presented on "Who's in the Tent? Addressing Racism & Unconscious Bias."

Taking Action for Change

In January 2020, representatives from the Jewish Federations of New Jersey - a collaboration between 5 NJ Federations - joined together in Washington, DC for a mission to advocate for our most vulnerable community members & security for our institutions.

Developing New Leaders The history and indeed the survival of the Jewish people have been to a large extent formed by Jewish leadership. In every generation, at every crossroad we have been blessed with leaders who have inspired, strengthened, cared for and guided us. It was the case with Moses in Egypt, David in the valley of Elah, Bar Kochba in Jerusalem, and Ben Gurion in Tel Aviv. In our Jewish community of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties, there is an ongoing need for new Jewish leaders in all aspects of Jewish life. Some leaders may be born, but all leaders need to be trained and inspired. For this reason, and to support the combined growth and success of the Jewish community in our area, the Jewish Federation has partnered with the Bella Foundation to develop a new generation of men and women who understand our Jewish heritage and history, know the needs of the worldwide and local communities, and have developed the pride, self-esteem and leadership skills necessary to make an impact on our Jewish community. This year the second cohort of Blank Leadership Fellows, guided by George & Harriet Blank, studied under outstanding teachers in the fields of Jewish history and understanding our relationship with the wider world, what it means to lead Jewishly, and what is our obligation as Jews to perform acts of hesed, tzedakah and tikkun olam, among other important topics. The program culminated in a mission to Israel in February 2020 that solidified what the Fellows learned in their studies. They saw Israel in all of her beauty and Israelis of every persuasion in all of their complicated lives and very real struggles. They left with the soul of the Jewish people and came back changed and strengthened from the experience.

Remembering Betty Roswell All of us in the Jewish community of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties have been truly blessed that Arthur and Betty Blaustein Roswell chose to make their home and raise their family in our community. The Roswells have been founding members of many of our organizations and they have invested their time, energy and resources into making our community a fulfilling and vibrant place to be Jewish. Sadly for all of us, Betty passed this year. However, her passing does not mean the end of her commitment to Jewish life. The institutions and programs she cared about and worked so hard on are now part of her legacy. Just as she carried on the legacy handed down to her by her parents, we are now charged with carrying on Betty’s work by using her Life & Legacy bequest to the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties to continue to uplift Jews here at home and across the world. Betty grew up in Baltimore, Maryland in a family dedicated to philanthropy and Jewish causes. Her parents set a wonderful example for her in the areas of Jewish education and social welfare, among many others. Betty embraced these values. They were part of who she was and she brought them to bear on every aspect of her community involvement. She worked for almost two decades as a social worker with Jewish Family Service of Southern Middlesex County before becoming a prime mover in the founding of JFS of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties and serving as its first president. Betty was also devoted to Temple Beth-El in Hillsborough and the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC. She co-founded the Temple’s nursery school and served on the Temple’s Board. At the JCC, Betty was involved in the formation of the organization’s operating policies and procedures and served as chairperson of its Long-Range Planning Committee in addition to being a Board member. Of course, Betty was dedicated to the mission and work of the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties serving for many years on the Board and playing a major role in the creation of the Jewish LIFE (Learning is for Everyone) program. Betty’s dedication to the role of the Federation in the community and the good the Federation does locally, in Israel and around the world are what motivated her to ensure that the work can go in for many, many years to come. Betty left a legacy gift in her will, thus making sure the Federation can continue with the important work of tikkun olam and hesed that she valued so much. All of us involved with the Jewish Federation, are grateful beyond words for Betty’s faith in our commitment to do just that and humbled by the responsibility.

We will miss Betty’s laughter and the twinkle in her eye, her creativity, her strong will, and her ability to have a positive impact on all of us. We will pay homage to her by fulfilling the legacy she has left for us every time we lift up the life of someone else. The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties

Thank you to our community leaders.

While our main mission is to raise funds for the community's most pressing needs, we respond in times of crisis, plan for the future, and offer educational and social events, business networking opportunities, and special programs to build and strengthen our community. We would not be able to do this without the dedication and hard work of our board, committee chairs and community leaders. We are grateful for their commitment to supporting and sharing our important work with neighbors, family, colleagues and friends.

Our community in action.

As part of Virtual Super Week November 2020, Federation hosted a Virtual Giving Circle where young professionals learned about important causes supported by our community, and combined their philanthropic efforts to make an even bigger impact on the program of their choice. The group chose to fund local Holocaust education for students through RVCC's Institute of Holocaust & Genocide Studies in response to increasing Anti-Semitism and calls for social justice.

In May 2021, our CRC hosted a virtual mission to Latin America, hearing firsthand from students and Jewish communal leaders from Mexico City, Panama City and Rio. They shared their experiences as Jewish teens, young adults, and leaders, and what life is like in Latin America's Jewish community. This event was co-chaired by Jacki Skole and Rachel Mehta, and we were joined by a local high school student who asked a question in Spanish to our guests from abroad.
