isney’s most recent announcement of the cast for the Aladdin live action movie has sparked controversy among many, but it’s not the first time a film has created a commotion due to the lack of diversity and representation in Hollywood. After Louis Gossett Jr, not many actresses and actors have won. In that short list, actors/actresses such as Morgan Freeman, Jamie Foxx, Lupita Nyong’o and recent winner, Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali appear. Since 2015, there has been 1% increase in African American actresses with leading roles.

African American actress, Hattie McDaniel, was first to win an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress in 1939. Her role in “Gone with the Wind” as Mammy led her to winning her Oscar.

Sidney Poitier was the second African American to win an Oscar and the first male actor. His lead role as Horner Smith in “Lilies of the Field” led him to win as Best Actor in 1963. Twenty-four years after McDaniel’s win.

In 2015, the percentage of Asian characters in film was 3% but increased up to 3% more in 2016 after films such as Moana were released. There has been a significant lack of Asian representation in Hollywood, as only three have won.

First to win, and only Asian female, was Miyoshi Umeki for her role in “Sayonara”. She won for Best Supporting Actress.

After 56 years and 500 films, Jackie Chan has been the last Asian actor to win an Oscar.

The Latino community are also another ethnic group with the lack of representation. Of all Latinos actors and actresses who have been nominated, only one actor has won Best Actor, three for Supporting Actor and two for Supporting Actresses.

Puerto Rican actress Rita Moreno won Best Supporting Actress. She is also one of the twelve who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Oscar.

In 87 years, the only actor to win Best Actor was Jose Ferrer for “Cyrano de Bergerac”. He is the only Puerto Rican actor to win.

The most recent Latina who has won an Oscar is Mexican-Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o for Best Supporting Actress.

Mexican actor Anthony Quinn won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Viva Zapata” and “Lust for Life.” He is the first Latino actor to win two Oscars as well.

Thirty years later, actress Mercedes Ruehl won Best Supporting Actress.

rom year to year, schools tend to evolve for the benefit of their students. From technology advancements like chromebooks, being able to check your school history online, or even a broadcast of all school events, everything is meant to be a lot more accessible. However, money is not that easy to access at school, which brings the idea of providing an ATM. An ATM can not only benefit the students, but staff and parents as well. There are many accounts in which one is in need of cash, but only have their card on them. Imagine on days like food fair, or a day when your dues need to be paid off, you may find yourself in a huge pickle. As beneficial as it may sound, there are also factors that may prevent this, such as how much it would cost to get one on campus, and how it is ensured that it won’t be damaged. When discussing the pros of having ATM at school, Mr. Zaldivar said, “Yea, I think an ATM would be very beneficial for everyone.”

ATMs can be beneficial because it would be easier for a student or staff member to keep their card with them at all time then loose change. Sometimes people forget their money and do not get to eat because they do not have any cash. Everyone loves saving money. Pre sale tickets are usually cheaper and can help you save money when they are sold earlier. However, some people forget their money and do not get the chance to purchase a presale ticket and end up buying the ticket for the original price. An ATM will not only benefit the students, but it would also benefit the staff. Yes there are many pros in having an ATM, however what are the cons? “Yes, an ATM can bring many benefits but safety for our school is first.” Mr Zaldivar then explains that, “People have broke in our school for small things, imagine what they would do if they knew we had an ATM.” Mr. Zaldivar points out the possibility of theft and how he wants to keep his school safe. Yes an ATM can be beneficial for all people in campus, but can bring much danger to campus.

Is it because tennis is not necessarily an “American” sport such as football or baseball taken lightly? For a game of such mental frustration and irritation, it would seem very likely that the game be taken seriously

Thanksgiving over time

ver time, the values of Thanksgiving have transformed the holiday into a day dedicated to celebrating generosity. The very first Thanksgiving was allegedly held in 1621 when the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians celebrated the harvest at Plymouth. A claim by Indian Country Today is that the Pilgrims were celebrating a harvest and shooting their muskets. Since the Pilgrims and Wampanoags had made a treaty, the Wampanoags feared betrayal through an attack and went to see what was going on. The Wampanoags allegedly stayed to verify that the Pilgrims were actually celebrating the harvest. The celebration was considered a religious holiday, then referred to as a Day of Giving Thanks. This festivity occurred in Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay first in 1623, then in 1631.

It was not until October 3, 1863 that Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday to celebrate a union army victory at Gettysburg. This would alter the initial significance of the festivity. According to the History network, most presidents before Lincoln felt that the holiday was inappropriate for the nation because they preferred to separate church and state. Today, Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate one another and give thanks for family members, friends, and even materialistic items that people appreciate. “Over the years people have modified the day and made it about family using it as an opportunity to reconnect and just be together,” says sophomore Marissa Morgan who enjoys making pumpkin spiced coffee during the Thanksgiving holiday. Several generations of the family connect, such as in Morgan’s family, and tell stories about when they were younger. People value one another and simply appreciate what they have in their lives during the holiday.

Celebrations Across Cultures I VIRADINA SALGADO staff writer

n a 2014 study by the Pew Research Center, 70.6% of the adult population identified themselves as Christians. Due to this, their holidays are more celebrated in our media thus causing other religions and their unique celebrations tend to be forgotten. Throughout the year, different cultures celebrate a variety of symbols, with most holy days being in winter. Kwanzaa is based on ancient Egypt and Nubia festivals, where they celebrate family life and unity. According to the Official Kwanzaa website, they celebrate; “a time of ingathering of the people to reaffirm the bonds between them… a time for commemoration of the past in pursuit of its lessons and in honor of its models of human excellence… and a time for celebration of the good of life and of existence itself, the good of family, community and culture, the good of the awesome and the ordinary, in a word the good of the divine, natural and social.” The main symbol of Kwanzaa is the seven colored candles; the three red candles on the left represent their struggle, the single centered black candle is for the people, and the three green candles on the right represent their future and hope. The celebration is spread out into the week of December 26 to January 1, each day representing something different, making the holiday a very special week for those who take part in it. Today, believers celebrate Hanukkah to remember defeating the Syrians, who tried to force their Greek culture upon them, and reviving the Temple of Jerusalem. “Hanukkah is a means of celebrating the impenetrable

spirit and devotion of the Jewish people to God and his faithfulness by keeping that candle alight for eight days,” says the site Jewish Gift Place. Religious blessings are recited before and traditional music is sung after the menorah has been lightened. In an article by Naftali Silberberg, she states, “Considering that it would take another eight days to procure pure oil, the Jews divided the jug of oil—contained enough oil for only one night—into eight equal amounts. They figured that they would light one-eighth of the oil each of the next eight nights… Miraculously, on each of the eight nights of Chanukah, the oil which should have lasted only one-eighth of the night lasted for the entire night.” Islam, the second largest religion, established the holiday Ramadan. Back in 610 A.D., a man that went by the name of Muhammad believed he was receiving direct of their God, Allah, from the angel named Gabriel. On the days of their celebration, they would fast from dawn to dusk in order to refuse impure and immoral thoughts and behavior. The reason why they focus on fasting is to practice selfrestraint and self-reflection. It is seen as a way to cleanse their soul and show empathy towards those who are less fortunate. Some Muslims tend to read the entire Quran or visit a mosque more often during Ramadan. Throughout winter many religious holidays are celebrated, especially in the United States, with the citizens being very diverse with their religious beliefs.

History of the clown ERIK ORTIZ

or many decades, clowns have been perceived as a symbol of terror, however they originated for the purpose of something much different. An old variation of clowning is known as a “court jester.” A court jester is a clown or bufoon who is employed by a noble or royal for entertainment purposes (they are also known as fools). According to “Blackface!”, “A pygmy clown performed as a jester in the court of Pharaoh Dadkeri-Assi during Egypt’s Fifth Dynasty about 2500 B.C. Court jesters have performed in China since 1818 B.C.” The most widely known is the circus clown . These clowns typically wear excessively colorful clothing, makeup, wigs, and overemphasized footwear. By definition, many comedic entertainers can be identified as a clown, however there are two standard variants of clowns that are the most noted. According to “History of Circus,” the two customary types are the “Whiteface clown” and “Auguste.” The Whiteface clown originates in 1801 and was designed by a man named Joseph Grimaldi. This clown is covered in white makeup from the neck up, mouth painted into a grin, and eyebrows painted black. His clothes are usually very extravagant. “He has the highest status in the clown hierarchy” according to “History of Circus.” The Auguste clown has physical attributes that include: a face painted typically red, pink, or tan, and clothes that may be wellfitted. This clown’s character can be best described as a joker. According to their origins, the sole purpose of a clown is to entertain the public and bring out the joyous feelings many individuals bury deep inside. In the 20th cent

10

-ury, the notion of having a clown perform at a child’s birthday party was quite common. However, in the past 3 decades, these characters have been notorious for functioning as the exact opposite. The most potentially frightening aspects of these ecstatic comedians have been illuminated for the benefit of horror-films, which have successfully commercialized this “Killer Clown” portrayal. One major example of a popular “Killer Clown” depiction is Stephen King’s “IT” novel which sparked the inspiration for the infamous

1990 miniseries, “Stephen King’s IT.” Nevertheless, this miniseries was rebooted once more in 2017. Other well recieved Killer-clown-based films include “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988), “Amusement” (2008), “Blood Harvest” (1987), and “100 tears”(2007). This renowned idea of clowns being terrifying and cynical murderers have been so widely-known that dressing up as a killer clown has become a trend. According to theverge.com, in 2016 there were reports of “about 100 (evil clown) sightings, with the most concentrated area

being Northeast and South.” Scary clown-like figures have gained significant popularity in the past decades due to the malevolent connotation to which our society has labeled them.

orror movies have made a comeback and are making their mark throughout the country. Films from the 80s and 90s have been revived and are receiving high ratings on their success. Some Horror movies have had a huge impact in the movie industry, and have even been awarded Oscars, as well as other nominations. For example, Stephen King’s IT (2017) had much anticipation for its release. Since it appealed to people of different ages, it was able to hit the charts. According to social media posts about the movie on Twitter, Instagram, etc, both films have caused lots of excitement among the youth. According to the “rotten tomatoes” critic website, IT had an average rating of 7.2/10 stars and 86% of audience enjoyed it.

Other movies including: Saw(2004), Annabelle(2014), and Child’s Play(1988) have been consistently successful with remakes throughout several years. Many of these old films have gained awards for their outstanding hard work. For instance, the screenplay for The Exorcist(1973), written by William Peter Blatty, won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Another movie that received various awards was, The Silence of the Lambs(1991), which was awarded with Best Picture, Actress/Actor, Writing, and it was nominated for Best Editing and Sound. All of these films have made a drastic impact in the horror movie industry, because they are considered classics and continue to prosper as more are created with fascinating screenplays such as, IT, and other upcoming films.

Women to remember...

n November 12, 1815, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born and her efforts would soon alter social norms. Growing up, Stanton was said to have shown signs of rebellion and nonconformity. Her parents had conservative beliefs, but she knew that with her little educational advantage, she could do more for women and for society. Stanton went to Emma Willard School and had one of the best educations for women in this time period; however, she did not receive a full college education. After her time in school, she attended social events where she met Henry B. Stanton, an abolitionist and her future husband. Not only was Stanton a women’s rights activist, but she also advocated for abolition. In fact, her honeymoon was spent at the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London. Stanton became aware of society’s issues and joined Lucretia Mott to help organize the world’s first women’s rights convention in 1848, also known as the Seneca Falls Convention. It was at this convention that Stanton modified Thomas Jefferson’s words, from the Declaration of Independence, when she said, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women were created equal.” On the second day of this convention, the couple hundred women who attended the first day were asked to invite men to attend if they wanted to support the movement. Approximately forty men showed up with well-known abolitionist Frederick Douglass amongst them. Stanton established the National Woman Suffrage Association, alongside Susan B. Anthony and it is believed that she helped begin the women’s rights movement. This movement would spark a new fight towards the 19th Amendment passed in 1920, granting women the right to vote.

“To throw obstacles in the way of a complete education is like putting out the eyes; to deny the rights of property is like cutting off the hands. To refuse political equality is to rob the ostracized of all self-respect, of credit in the market place, of recompense in the world of work, of a voice in choosing those who make and administer the law, a choice in the jury before whom they are tried, and in the judge who decides their punishment.” — From “Solitude of Self”

sabella Baumfree was born into slavery on an unknown date in the state of New York, but her life-changing journey, and work as an activist, would allow her to leave behind an incredible legacy. When she was nine years old, she was allegedly sold with a flock of sheep for $100. Baumfree would be sold on two other occasions after this. The state of New York was working on approving abolition legislation in 1977 that would gradually begin to free slaves, but would not take full effect until 1827. After her owner, John Dumont, failed to free her Baumfree escaped with her infant daughter. She also successfully won a case in which her son Peter’s freedom would be secured after he was illegally sold to slave owners in Alabama. On June 1st of 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth and decided to devote her life to abolition and her religion. At the first National Women’s Rights Convention in Worcester, Massachusetts, Truth spoke out fighting for equality. Truth’s memoirs were published through The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave in 1850. She delivered a speech in 1851 at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention which would later be known as “Ain’t I a Woman?” Alongside other recognizable figures such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth was a testament to the cruel realities of slavery and all of these historical figures are known for their work as abolitionists For the rest of her lifetime, Truth advocated for women’s rights, prison reform, and universal suffrage. Truth passed on November 26, 1883. Since her birth date is unknown, her legacy as an activist is honored on the 26th of November as many remember her accomplishments and the battle she fought to be free.

ohn F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated on Friday, November 22, 1963 at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time in Dallas, Texas while riding in a motorcade in Dealey Plaza. Kennedy was fatally shot by a former U.S Marine, Lee Harvey Oswald, while he was riding with his wife, Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally, and Connally’s wife-Nellie, in the presidential motorcade. He left behind 2 children Jack Jr a son and a daughter Caroline Kennedy. J.F.K. accomplished so,much during his 3 year turn as President. He fought for civil right’s in America and fought for equality amongst Americans. As president, Kennedy confronted monumenting Cold War tensions in cuba, Vietnam and elsewhere. He also led a renewed drive for public service and eventually provided federal support for the growing population. Americans wonder if he was never killed what would America be like. Would we have ever entered the Vietnam war, or would we have ever got out of the cold war?

Here is no definite way to know about how the world would be different today. We can only imagine. His assassination, sent shockwaves around the world and turned the all-too-human Kennedy into a larger-than-life heroic figure. According to the History site, “ historians continue to rank him among the best-loved presidents in American history.”

2028 Summer Olympics T EMELY HERNANDEZ Editor

he last time the Olympics took place in Los Angeles was in 1984. 2028 will be the third time L.A hosts the event. L.A officials announced a deal with the International Olympic Committee to play host to the 2028 Summer Olympics, giving up a bid for the 2024 Games to Paris and bringing the Olympics back to the United States for the first time since 2002. Countries that are currently recognized by the International Olympic Committee constantly compete and bid for the Olympics to come compete in their arenas. Because the Olympics bring money, cities usually gain mass revenue from tourists. When the Olympics were held in Athens, Greece in 2004, there were changes happening. In the Demos report written by past Olympics minister, Tessa Jowell she mentions: “This summer, we’ve seen the transforming effect of hosting the Olympics. Athens is a changed place: cleaner, brighter, easier to get around, vibrant and modern.”

As the Beijing Games opened four years later, Athens faced a bill estimated at $784 million in order to maintain this ghost town of Olympian extravagance. It will cost 5.2 million dollars, which is a bargain, to prepare for the Olympics, but Los Angeles will receive financial benefits from hosting the games. Three major categories of benefits also include: the short-run benefits of tourist spending during the Games; the long-run benefits or the “Olympic legacy,” which include improvements in infrastructure, and increases in trade and foreign investment. Although the Olympics has positive impacts on the community, there will be painful consequences. If traffic going and leaving L.A. is bad now, imagine when the Olympics come in 2028. This includes the people living there now, the people that go to work there, and finally adding the influx of tourists to the picture.

There will be traffic on the streets and freeways, but there will be an increase of pedestrians. There will also be tourism; tourists will explore L.A. in their spare time such as Universal Studios, Hollywood, and and even Hollywood Boulevard. L.A will not be the only city affected by the influx of people. While people are in the city, they may have plans to visit Disneyland. Disneyland will most likely be filled with even more traffic and if people want to go somewhere cheaper, Knotts, Six Flags, and other famous attractions of Southern California will be affected by the Olympics due to the increase of tourism. The beaches will also be busy since not everyone in the world has access to the “sunny” weather of California. Southern California will be crowded, and traffic will be fantastic, but there will be benefits for the residents of Southern California.

s the demand for more American jobs continues, the increase of American products also arises. This past April, President Donald Trump passed the “Buy American and Hire American” executive order which expresses the importance and preference for buying american products. There are many positive reasons for buying American products supporting American workers and keeps money in the United States but the common question

asked is whether it really helps the economy as a whole. Buying U.S. products would help the economy but there are imported items, that are cheaper to manufacture and are basically native to that region. Regional economist with the federal reserve bank of minneapolis, Toby Madden, states “If we decided to cut off all imports of petroleum and gasoline there would be a big spike in the price of gasoline here in America.

According to Madden there is a weakness in the executive order. Another difficulty is the conception of buying the cheaper products. Since most cheap products are imported from different countries like Canada, Mexico and Thailand where resources and factories are vast, there is no need to buy American products.

According to consumer reports 8 out of 10 americans are willing to purchase American made products over imported ones.

Procrastination is not the key to success, so do your work on time. Even though I procrastinated writing this and doing so many other things; the eye bags and tiredness on my face are not exactly a “healthy” way of living. Instead, buy a planner and turn off your computer to do your work, geez.

2.

Wash your face and drink more water. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You’ve heard it all before in those skin-care threads on Twitter and Instagram. Even though that may not give you the clear skin you want, it is always important to stay hydrated, because nothing good will happen if you avoid water! (Wow! Oh geez! I would have never known if this cool journalist never said anything! Oh man!)

3.

Take a newspaper from the Jaguar News Network. We all know you love taking our newspapers and throwing it away. So instead of just throwing it away, talk about your feelings to the pages and we will indirectly listen (we will not). it is a great way to relieve stress, trust me.
