SUMTER ITEM FILE PHOTO Book lovers peruse the fiction section of a past Friends of the Sumter County Library at a past sale. This year’s big book sale continues Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 8, 9 and 10, from 2 to 6 p.m., and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, which is Bag O’Books Day.

BY IVY MOORE Special to The Sumter Item The days most highly anticipated by local readers began last Thursday, when the large meeting room at the Sumter County Library, 111 N. Harvin St., opened its doors to reveal thousands of books of all genres at the Friends of the Sumter County Library Book Sale.

The big book sale continues Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 8, 9 and 10, from 2 to 6 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, which is Bag O’Books Day. On that day, shoppers can fill a bag supplied by the Friends for just $5.

Among the most popular of the genres available at the sale are children’s books, fiction and mysteries; however, nonfiction, religion, science and technology, young adult fiction, classics cookbooks, poetry and more are also available. Books are donated by library patrons, and most are in very good condition. Some special books, such as first editions and books about South Carolina, are priced a little higher than others.

Sumter County Library Executive Director Robert Harden said the Friends’ contributions to the library are “very, very important. The money raised by the Friends of the Library almost completely funds the summer reading program that keeps children and teens reading over their summer break from school.”

In addition, he said, the Friends supplement

the library’s budget in several other ways, such as “helping to fund the new Maker’s Space and helping to buy things the library needs. Mainly the funds raised by the book sale will help to buy books.”

Government and other grants have not been restored, despite the improving economy, Harden said. “We’re still below the 2008 levels,” when the economy caused reductions in funding to many arts and cultural programs and organizations, The mission statement of the Friends of the Sumter County Library reads that the organization’s goal is “… to develop and maintain an association to promote awareness and appreciation of the library’s functions, resources, services and needs. As Friends of the Library, we promote and support the library programs and staff through fundraising and advocacy. Our vision is a thriving and sustainable library system accessible to all. … The Friends encourage the donation of books and other library materials as well as endowments and bequeaths.”

Harden and the Friends encourage becoming a member of the Friends in order to have first chance at your favorite categories at next year’s sale.

‘CBS This Morning’s’

John Dickerson is ready for the midterm elections The weekday “CBS This Morning” team of hosts will participate in CBS News’ coverage of Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The “CBS This Morning” co-host – also back anchoring “Face the Nation” lately, during successor Margaret Brennan’s maternity leave – expectedly has been in the thick of political coverage leading up to U.S. voting on Tuesday, Nov. 6. In addition to his weekday program, he’ll be a prominent participant in a primetime CBS special on Election Night.

While such recent controversies as the nomination and confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh could affect the outcomes, Dickerson (who anchored CBS News’ coverage of Kavanaugh’s ceremonial swearing-in) knows it remains to be seen how much.

“The difference” with the midterms, he reasons, “is that in a four-year election, every person you talk to is engaged in the national conversation, because they’re all participants. With midterm elections, you don’t want to overdo it. The first thing everybody wants to know is whether Republicans can retain control of the House (of Representatives), and you’re really talking about 30 districts where it might go one way or the other.

“We talk about it in national terms, but we’re really talking about pockets of the country, so the temptation to nationalize is it something we have to watch,” stresses Dickerson. “But, because elections have been national in increasing terms since 1994 – with the Republican Revolution – it’s a real event. All the speculation about how something will play with this group or that group

Particularly given recent events, Dickerson acknowledges that “people are very engaged in the midterms. Then the question is, ‘At what level are they engaged?’ Are they interested only in the outcome and they won’t be voting, or will this be a large-turnout election? And even if it is a large turnout, does it matter in the places where it needs to matter? It could be notable because it shows enthusiasm, but not really change much, because it happens in places where the control of that seat doesn’t change.”

As an ongoing student of history, Dickerson – the son of groundbreaking television journalist Nancy Dickerson – notes the effect of how the political spectrum is covered today.

“There have been other fascinating midterm elections, but we didn’t have the same media environment that we have now,” he reflects, “so part of this is just the absolutely overwhelming nature of our political coverage these days. Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa

BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations.

The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name.

Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday.

With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said.

NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995.

Currently, NBSC has 340 employees.

Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood.

NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future.

“Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

“American Sniper” (2014): Cooper does compelling, Oscar-nominated work for director Clint Eastwood in the true story of Navy SEAL and expert shooter Chris Kyle.

“American Hustle” (2013): Sporting a notable hairstyle, Cooper reteamed with director David O. Russell on this excellent tale of a huge con job.

“Silver Linings Playbook” (2012): Cooper first became a member of the Oscar nominees club opposite Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence in Russell’s comedy-drama.

“The Place Beyond the Pines” (2012): Solid work by Cooper helps fuel this tale of

a cop’s and a criminal’s (Ryan Gosling) crossed paths.

“Limitless” (2011): Proving he could hold a dramatic movie largely on his own, Cooper plays a writer whose brain power is expanded by a drug.

(He also was involved in the television-series version on CBS.) “The A-Team” (2010): Cooper does a fine job of rebooting Dirk Benedict’s television character nicknamed “Faceman,” one of several military renegades on the run from enemies and the law.

‘A Star Is Born’ again as Cooper meets Gaga Sissy Spacek and Robert Redford

No matter what version it’s been told in, “A Star Is Born” always has done especially well by its female stars. The love story of a fading talent and a rising one is as durable as ever in its newest retelling, but it can be argued that this is the one that gets it the most right for its male star, too.

That could be because Bradley Cooper also co-wrote, co-produced and directed the update, but whatever the reason, he gives as good as he gets acting-wise from Lady Gaga – in a hugely impressive performance as a singer-songwriter discovered by the burnout of a rock icon played by Cooper.

“He’s Just Not That Into You” (2009): In another star-filled romantic comedy,

Cooper plays a married man who thinks of straying after a chance encounter with a singer (Scarlett Johansson).

“Wedding Crashers” (2005): Advancing his movie fortunes, Cooper plays the insensitive beau of a politician’s daughter (Rachel McAdams) being wooed by one of the crashers (Owen Wilson).

In this animated, greatly enjoyable Disney-Pixar sequel from writer-director Brad Bird – which followed the original “Incredibles” 14 years later – the superhero clan suddenly is a

family without a cause, since the government bureau they worked for has been shut down ... but all might not be lost, since a technology guru (voiced by “Better Call Saul’s” Bob Odenkirk) offers to give them a base to continue protecting the world from evil. Elastigirl (voice of Holly Hunter) specifically is called back into action while her husband (voice of Craig T. Nelson) plays “Mr. Mom” at home. Keep your eye on the youngest member of the Incredibles’ family, Jack-Jack, highly amusing in his own right.

BY JAY BOBBIN The performers feel absolutely authentic together, and while the Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand versions in particular have their timeless pleasures, this “Star Is Born” gets around Hollywood trappings to present the genuine grit of the music world. Also helpful is an extremely well-chosen supporting cast that includes Andrew Dice Clay as Gaga’s father, the always-great Sam Elliott as Cooper’s brother and manager, and comedian Dave Chappelle as a musical pal of Cooper.

One of the tricks to “A Star Is Born” really working is to make the downward slide of the male protagonist convincing. That’s a tall order for a performer, since he purposely has to look raggedy and cast all vanity (or most of it, anyway) to the wind. Cooper goes for that fully here, and it’s a huge asset, since his looking worse only makes his leading lady look better.

Not that Lady Gaga couldn’t have achieved that largely on her own: She’s acted before, notably on “American Horror Story,” but this is another story entirely. Making it work is very much on her shoulders as well as Cooper’s, and it has to help that her character is largely about facing challenges in the music business ... as Gaga obviously has herself, so she knows the turf. Also, the picture smartly sets her up to be quite Gaga-esque when she first appears, so she’s given room to surprise viewers from that point forward (which she achieves beautifully).

Maybe the single most notable thing about “A Star Is Born” is the fact that it’s Cooper’s first movie as a director. He shows remarkable confidence behind the camera while letting himself be vulnerable in front of it – so in that sense, you really can say that a star is reborn here, too.

“CHRISTOPHER ROBIN” Just because Christopher Robin grew up doesn’t mean he forgot about Winnie the Pooh and his other animal friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. That’s the heart-tugging conceit of this pleasant Disney movie, which is in the hands of the right director: Marc Forster, who expanded on the background

of another classic story in “Finding Neverland.” As played quite well by Ewan McGregor, the adult Christopher Robin is a family man and business drone who has lost many of the qualities that made him special ... not only to himself, but also to the animated Pooh and company. They reunite with him to try to show him the way back, but they all have to be found first. Pooh is voiced by Jim Cummings. The seventh-annual Caffeine and Gasoline car show rolled into downtown Sumter at the end of October, bringing cars, trucks and motorcycles ranging across decades, styles and colors to the parking lot wrapping from The Sumter Item to Cut Rate Soda Fountain. Spearheaded

by Cut Rate’s Todd Touchberry, the annual event benefits the Military Museum of Sumter, which is run by historian and Item archivist Sammy Way. More than 180 cars pre-registered for the show, which Touchberry called the biggest yet.
