Sim-Livingston COLUMBIA — Polly Rankin Sim of Columbia and Joshua Woods Livingston of Sumter were united in marriage at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Anson Ingles Sim Jr. of Columbia, and the granddaughter of Mrs. Rankin Suber Craig of Columbia, the late Dr. Sidney Emmett Morrison Sr., and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Anson Ingles Sim Sr. of Long Island, New York. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor of science in fashion merchandising. She is employed as a sales representative by Republic National Distributing Co. in Columbia. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carlisle Vance Livingston Jr. of Sumter, and the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Perry Spraberry of Bellefontaine, Mississippi, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Carlisle Vance Livingston Sr. of Sumter. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in financial management and from the University of South Carolina with a master’s degree in business administration. He is employed as director of business development by Star Stone Insurance Group in Columbia. The Rev. Dr. Bradley Donald Smith of Eastminster Presbyterian Church officiated at the ceremony. Music was provided by Christian Markle, bagpiper; and Joshua Evanovich, organist. Escorted by her father, the bride wore a soft lace, form-fitting, strapless gown featuring a sweetheart neckline. Dr. Dan Kiernan of the University of South Carolina Sumter visited St. Anne School on April 12. Middle school science teacher Rob Carneal invited Kiernan to demonstrate some labs such as the DNA lab that teaches students a little about how forensic scientists match DNA patterns at crime scenes.

SCIENCE FAIR In April, the middle school sent seven students to compete in the statewide science fair for the South Carolina Independent School Association. They brought home four awards. Wilson Hall COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS As of May 3, 85 percent of the 61 members of the senior class received merit-based scholarship offers totaling more than $4.7 million to a four-year college or university. University of South Carolina Sumter SUMMER CAMPS FOR TWEENS USC Sumter is offering two-week camps for 9- through 14-year-olds this summer: Writing Camp and Science Camp. If you know a budding science genius or writer in training, these camps are a great way to help foster creativity and wonder in your child. Writing Camp will be held June 20-23 on campus. Students will learn the basics of fiction writing, including generating ideas, description, characterization, plotting, finding your voice, constructing dialogue, setting and imagery. They will practice writing with impromptu creative writing exercises and examine well-written beginnings, middles, and endings. Revision sessions will be held in order to teach constructive criticism and critique. Writing Camp is taught by Leah Kiernan, a teacher with 11 years of English, language arts and literature teaching experience. Science Camp will be held July 5-8. Students in this camp will explore human biology, environmental science, biochemistry and physics. Students will conduct scientific experiments and explore the environment in which we live. Science Camp is taught by Dr. Dan Kiernan, biology instructor at USC Sumter. Dr. Kiernan is a published research scientist with a bachelor of arts in biology, a master of science in biology, and a PhD in science education. Each camp costs $70. To register by

Sumter School District DUKE TIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED The Duke TIP Seventh Grade Talent Search identifies academic strength, develops abilities and interests and celebrates achievement at a crucial time when students are forming their identities and looking ahead to the future. Eligible seventh-graders may register to take either the ACT or SAT. These students are identified as Duke TIP because of a high qualifying score on a recent grade-level test. Duke TIP students from Alice Drive Middle are Marcus Berrette, Kai Buffalo, Kay Bunch, Emma Chapman, Madelyn Jordan, Hayden Kirkhart, Jada Kirkland, Ashauna Leverette, Nicholas Macedo, Gabriella Perales, Anne Jackson Scott and Hannah Young. Qualifying for the Academy for Summer Studies are Jada Kirkland, Hannah Young, Hadiyah Lucien and Jordan Thompson. Participants for the Center for Summer Studies are Gabriella Perales, Taylor Bynum and Jake Hudson. Duke TIP also sponsors a talent search for fourth- through sixth-graders. Eligibility for participation is an honor which requires exceptional academic ability. Students chosen were sixth-grader Michaela O’Neal, Alice Drive Middle; Nicki Hazuda, Max Ringer, Marshall Saunders and Holden Trimnal, fourthgraders, and William Luzzi, Julianna Valcourt and Madison White, fifthgraders, from Alice Drive Elementary School.
