South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson addresses the more than 500 sophomore students at Sumter High School on Thursday.

Officials warn students about Internet safety BY JAMIE H. WILSON Special to The Item When Facebook representative Brooke Oberwetter asked Thursday who among the more than 500 sophomores at Sumter High School had a Facebook account, nearly every hand went up. Oberwetter, who works in the external affairs department at the social media company, said she was there to help the students understand what is and isn’t appropriate fodder for their Facebook pages. The company was invited to speak to the group of teenagers at the request of state Attorney General Alan Wilson, who said he was aiming for a “frank and candid discussion” with teenagers about Internet safety. “While the Internet is a wonderful tool … it can be a very dangerous weapon in the hands of someone who doesn’t respect it,” he said. Wilson warned students about online predators who would use personal information

Sumterites ready for coffee giant BY ROB COTTINGHAM rcottingham@theitem.com Like the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, leprechauns and such, a Starbucks in Sumter was gossiped about for so long it became a myth. Now that the monolithic coffee chain is finally here, Sumterites are ready to enjoy the spoils. Frappaccinos, macchiattos, espresso, ACCARDI cappuccinos, soy latte and — however rare — coffee are all at the fingertips of locals, mermaid logo and all. RAINER Like many area natives, Courtney Ravenell has been waiting years for the opportunity to get hot RAVENELL Starbucks coffee from a nearby location. “I think it’s a wonderful idea,” Ravenell said. “I have two kids, I’ve been up since

Sumter will soon be the town that didn’t simply cry “Starbucks.” The coffee retailer will have a physical footprint in town as early as fall. Officials at property owner and developer Carolina Holdings Inc. confirmed rumors Wednesday that the Seattlebased coffee shop would be installed at 1251 Broad St. in front of Lowe’s Home Improvement Store. Rumors of the new development have been circling since the Greenville-based property owner broke ground on the site, which, until recently, was owned by Lowe’s. The rumor was confirmed by the Starbucks logo — a twin-tailed siren — emblazoned on the site plan. “We are under construction,” said David Winburn, a developer with Carolina Holdings. “The city has been great to work with.” From its light blond roast to its seasonal coffee offerings, the purveyor of coffee, teas and baked goods has become a mainstay in the lives of coffee aficionados worldwide. Customers can expect their first cup of coffee in about six months, Winburn said. “Good weather speeds up the process,” he said, after adding that the store might open earlier. The store is slated to occupy a 1,900-square-foot space on the left side of the development.

Local pastors hope to bring blessings to school staff BY JADE ANDERSON janderson@theitem.com A group of Sumter religious leaders decided they wanted to do more for schools. So next month, they are sponsoring a prayer for all educators. “As pastors of the Sumter community we want to thank you for serving and teaching our children, for the sacrifice and dedication you give daily in the classroom,” the Rev. Diane Hodgson said in her letter. “We invite you, the administrators, teachers, staff and all workers HODGSON at all levels within the public and private school system to come join with us. We desire to pray God’s will and blessings upon you for the very important work that you are doing — educating America’s next generation of citizens and leaders.” Hodgson is the president of the Sumter
