‘Chasing Ice’ delivers environmental message BY KEVIN MCDONOUGH Is climate change real? Can it be proven? Or is it just a matter of scientific argument? The makers of the 2012 documentary “Chasing Ice” (8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., National Geographic, TV-PG) set out to illustrate the effects of rising temperatures in the most dramatic fashion possible. Naturalist and photographer James Balog fell in love with glaciers. They were a landscape photographer’s dream, presenting dynamic beauty born of geological heft and timeless power. As he continued to document them, he was startled and alarmed to watch glaciers recede year after year at unprecedented speed. Movements, or rather retreats, that once took centuries now transpired in a year or six months. To powerfully convey his concern, he assembled a team to place 25 time-lapse cameras in Iceland, Greenland, Alaska and Montana. The process allows viewers to watch rising temperatures melt the ice and send huge portions of the gla-
ciers tumbling into the sea. “Ice” also gives the National Geographic Channel a chance to return to the kind of programming that folks would like to associate with its long-revered brand. • Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe sings the songs that Kate Smith made popular during World War II on the “Live From Lincoln Center” presentation of “Celebration: Stephanie Blythe Meets Kate Smith” (9 p.m., PBS, TV-G, check local listings). • Netflix continues its efforts to redefine the television experience by launching original, exclusive programming. What makes it different than HBO or Starz is that rather than “airing” a show one episode at a time, Netflix streams an entire season. Starting today, Netflix makes available all 13 episodes of “Hemlock Grove,” a gothic thriller based on a novel by Brian McGreevy. Look for a “Twin Peaks”-type drama set in a rundown town complete with monsters, bloody murders and the kind of violent shocks and sadistic ultra-gore that executive
producer Eli Roth provided in his films “Cabin Fever,” “Hostel” and “Hostel: Part II.” Famke Janssen, Dougray Scott, Lili Taylor and Bill Skarsgard star.
