Q: I’ve heard that Ray Romano is going to do another series. Is that true? A: It is. With “Everybody Loves Raymond” still available regularly on TV Land and IFC, the actor-comedian is working on his newest show, a Netflix sitcom titled “No Good Deed.” He’ll be part of an ensemble cast in the saga of several families who all want to buy the same house, with plenty of complications arising from their vying for the property. Portable units, piping materials big sellers at hardware stores BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com With unseasonably low temperatures at night in the tri-county region since Monday, residents have been buying up portable space heaters and pipe fittings and related parts for burst pipes, according to local hardware stores. Staff at Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and Simpson Hardware & Sports said Thursday that space heaters have been big sellers all week. Simpson was the only one that reported Thursday afternoon to still have an assortment of heaters on hand. After Wednesday’s snowstorm dropped 4 to 6 inches of snow throughout Sumter County and about 3 inches in Clarendon and Lee counties, utility providers only reported a limited number of home power outages in the tri-county region. Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said the provider only had a handful of reported outages associated with the cold and snowstorm on Wednesday night in the three counties. Black River Electric Coop. representative James Moye said the co-op had about 95 home outages in the area, but everyone had their power back on by 5 a.m. Thursday. The stretch of cold nights seem to be causing more problems than Wednesday’s snowfall. According to National Weather Service

Those involve the men in their lives, with Chris Noth, Jason Lewis, David Eigenberg and Evan Handler also reprising their TV roles. Remaining first among equals is the story of Carrie
extra layer of authenticity that was everything in terms of this story, making the picture a smash hit — even at a length of 2-1/2 hours, which still wasn’t enough for many people. In fact, “Sex and the City 2” followed, but its plot that took the ladies to Abu Dhabi was a bit of a stretch. Sticking to the simple, yet emotionally complicated, basics was the best path here, confirmed by the fact that the first movie sometimes is included in televised marathons of the original show, being such a logical and comfortable extension of it. Among cast additions here, Jennifer Hudson is the clear standout as Carrie’s personal assistant and frequent sounding board, ultimately providing the key that brings the movie to its hugely satisfying conclusion.

Tournament of Taste: ‘TOC’ Season 5 sees biggest champs yet
BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT The fire is on and Fieri is back: Season 5 of “Tournament of Champions” kicks off Sunday, Feb. 18, on Food Network. “The skills and abilities of 32 of the most talented chefs from the East and West coast, including all four previous champions, will be pushed to the limit,” said Food Network of the series. “The pressure is intense, and emotions are high as the elite chefs do not know who their opponents will be and what challenges the randomizer will dish out, getting progressively harder and harder in each round.” As with previous years, the competition features “blind judging by some of the biggest names in the food world,” asking this season’s chefs to take on eight weeks and 31 challenges worth of head-to-head battles in order to find the next “TOC” champion — a cook who will take home the coveted Tournament of Champions belt and the largest cash prize in the show’s history, totaling $150,000. Fieri himself is incredibly excited for this upcoming round of competition. “As the wildest, most anticipated culinary competition year after year, you know that we had to go big for Season 5,” Fieri said. “So here’s the deal. In order to win, you’ve gotta either be a past champ or take down a champ, as all the winners from previous seasons are back to defend their titles. We’re crankin’ up the already fierce competition with heated culinary rivalries, wild

Generations continue to regale in the adventures of Dorothy Gale, Garland’s character who is whisked from a Kansas farm — along with Toto, of course — into a magical land where she makes fast friends with the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion (Jack Haley, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr). “Babes on Broadway” (1941): One of the best of the variations on the “Let’s put on a show!” theme well-covered by Garland and Mickey Rooney, this musical-comedy finds their characters staging a charity benefit. “For Me and My Gal” (1942): Garland and Gene Kelly are expectedly terrific together as a performing team whose act — and budding romance – may be bashed by wartime obligations. “Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944): The duet of “Under the Bamboo Tree” by Garland and Margaret O’Brien is an irresistible part of this tale of four sisters who resent their father’s job transfer to New York — which means they’ll have to move from their beloved St. Louis with him. “The Harvey Girls” (1946): Musical highlights including “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe” help fuel this great Garland musical about several train passengers headed West to open a restaurant. The film is part of a day of Oscar nominees for best original score, Tuesday, Feb. 20, on Turner Classic Movies. “Easter Parade” (1948): You surely know on which holiday this picture always makes a television appearance. Irving Berlin’s score fuels this saga with Garland, Fred Astaire and Ann Miller as performers whose career choices largely are dictated by their romantic ties, past and present. “In the Good Old Summertime” (1949): The premise of unidentified loves that also has driven “The Shop Around the Corner” and “You’ve Got Mail” services this great musical, which — as Liza Minnelli points out in “That’s Entertainment!” — features her, at a very young age, with her mom Garland in the closing scene. “A Star Is Born” (1954): Garland is the main factor setting this version of the much-told tale apart as she plays Esther Blodgett, whose showbiz career rises — under the stage name Vicki Lester — as that of the man she loves, Norman Maine (James Mason), sinks. Standout musical performances by Garland include “The Man That Got Away” and “Born in a Trunk.”

The People’s picks: People’s Choice Awards returns with new categories
Back to the lab: ‘CSI: Vegas’ returns to prove one of their own’s innocence BY DANA SIMPSON When a famed forensics lab drops everything to prove your innocence, your days being held in custody for murder are numbered, right? That’s what lead investigator Josh Folsom (Matt Lauria, “Kingdom”) is hoping for in the season premiere of “CSI” Vegas,” airing Sunday, Feb. 18, on CBS. After Folsom’s mother’s killer was found dead in last season’s finale episode, the investigator was dragged away, suspected to be responsible for the death. The whodunnit cliffhanger has kept audiences on their toes for months in the extended break between seasons of “CSI: Vegas,” affected by the strikes last year. It doesn’t seem like the killer’s identity and Folsom’s fate will be a mystery for very long, per the premiere episode description from CBS, as the new season opens with “the CSI team [combing] through every crumb of forensic evidence to determine his innocence or guilt.” Paula Newsome (“Barry”) leads the team as Maxine Roby, head of the crime lab, supported by Mandeep Dhillon (“Avoidance”) as investigator Allie Rajan, Ariana Guerra (“Promised Land”) as Det. Serena Chavez, Jay Lee (“Looking for Alaska”) as investigator Chris Park, Lex Medlin (“Drop Dead Diva”) as investigator Beau Finado, Sara Amini (“Lucky Hank”) as chief medical examiner Sonya
Nikolayevich, Sarah Gilman (“Those Who Can’t”) as rookie investigator Penny Gill, and reprising her role as investigator Catherine Willows from the hit establishing series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” Marg Helgenberger (“All Rise”), the only original series cast member to appear in more than one season of the “Vegas” reboot. Ahead of her first appearance last season, Helgenberger spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her return to the franchise, praising the new cast. “They couldn’t have been more welcoming, But it was interesting because I had played Catherine Willows for so many years, It’s like a part of me,” said Helgenberger. “In terms of establishing a camaraderie or an instant chemistry, it was pretty natural, I have to say, and I think it’s because I played this character for so long.” Meanwhile, Folsom’s fate is in the hands of the CSI team, but it’s not just work for some members of the lab. Det. Chavez herself may just be a little too close to Folsom to help build a case for his innocence — the pair have established a romantic relationship when they are off the clock. Complicating matters more, Allie, in addition to being a senior investigator in the lab, is Folsom’s ex. Bolstering a former boyfriend’s innocence is all in a day’s work. It’s no secret that salacious, outlandish cases are part of the DNA of any “CSI” series, and “Vegas” is no exception. The procedural has a habit of using comedy to create some levity over gory crime scenes and graphic medical examinations. Suspicious deaths at a clown hotel, a secret sex dungeon and a masquerade party are just a few examples of the cases that have ended up in the lab over the course of the show’s first two seasons, not to mention more than one elaborate frame up. Nothing less could be expected from the crimes of Las Vegas. “CSI: Vegas” moves from Thursday nights to a coveted Sunday prime time spot on CBS, alongside action drama “The Equalizer,” returning for its fourth season, and the brand new series “Tracker,” starring Justin Hartley (“This Is Us”). The second season of “CSI: Vegas” upped the episode order from its first season’s 10 episodes to a whopping 21 episodes, however this season is back to a tight 10. Many network procedurals have premiered abridged seasons of 10 to 13 episodes given the work stoppage during the writers and screen actors guild strikes.
