Stakes high, vote begins Congress, state gov up for grabs BY T H E B L A N K S L AT E M E D I A E D I T O R I A L S TA F F Port Washington residents will vote in several state and local elections, including a gubernatorial election between Gov. Kathy Hochul and U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) Nov. 8. 3rd Congressional District Democrat Robert Zimmerman is running against George DevolderSantos to represent the state’s 3rd Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), who lost in the gubernatorial primary against Hochul, currently holds the seat. Zimmerman is running on the Democratic and Working Family Parties lines. He is the co-president of ZE Creative Communications on Bond Street in Great Neck, a public relations firm he started 33 years ago with Ron Edelson, and a Democratic national committeeman. After graduating from Brandeis University, he worked as a congressional aide on Capitol Hill for Congressmen Lester Wolff, James Scheuer and Gary Ackerman. He also served on the board of the American Museum of Natural History as a government representative for 20 years. Santos is running on the Republican and Conservative lines. He is a first-generation American born in Queens whose parents immigrated to the United States in pursuit of the “American Dream.” Continued on Page 51

Manorhaven halts building for 6 months ‘We’re going over all of our codes and laws and we want to see what’s right’: Popeleski BY ST E V E N K E E H N E R A new moratorium will halt all construction within the Village of Manorhaven for the next six months to give officials time to address and update building codes and laws. Trustees unanimously approved the local law during a village board meeting Wednesday. Manorhaven will also not accept or process any special permit, site plan approval, demolition permits or building per-

mits during this period. No person or entity may subdivide any property in the village, either. Mayor John Popeleski said the village took the action to “preserve what [Manorhaven] has left.” “We’re going over all our codes and laws and we want to see what’s right,” Popeleski told The Island 360. “We do have a lot of antiquated codes that need to be updated.” Trustees also passed another sixmonth moratorium on free-standing

or ground-mounted cell node installation systems. The village will fine anyone who violates these laws between $500 to $1,000. Every day the violation persists will count as a separate offense. “I can’t stop a builder from building a house,” said Popeleski. “But the village can turn around and say ‘Okay, look, you want to split your house? No problem. But these are our new laws.'” Some spoke out against the mor-
