Schreiber, Daly reopen next day BY R O S E W E L D ON Less than a week into the new school year, the Port Washington school district closed Schreiber High School and Daly Elementary School for the day on Tuesday following confirmed COVID-19 cases at each of the schools. District Superintendent Michael Hynes said in a statement on the district’s website on Monday that a Schreiber student and a Daly student had tested positive for the virus. “In accordance with our reentry plan, the Nassau County Department of Health was immediately contacted to initiate a contact tracing investigation,” Hynes said. “We are following all building sanitizing and cleaning protocols, and out of an abundance of caution, the Schreiber and Daly buildings will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 15.” A representative from a public relations firm employed by the district would not say whether the cases were from the same Continued on Page 42

Avena re-elected in Manorhaven Brian Herrington and party sweep Flower Hill in village elections BY R O S E W E L D ON Two mayors were elected and a write-in candidate won during elections in the Port Washington villages on Tuesday. The village elections were originally scheduled for March

18, but following two reschedulings due to the coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order for all village elections to take place Sept. 15. MANORHAVEN Mayor Jim Avena of the Manorhaven Residents Party won re-election against resident Vincent Costa of the Manorhaven Liberty Party. Avena received 421 votes to Costa’s 384. The Residents Party’s

Deputy Mayor Priscilla von Roeschlaub narrowly won reelection against Manorhaven Liberty candidate and local business owner Harry S. Farina. Von Roeschlaub received 397 votes to Farina’s 395. Zoning Board of Appeals member Joseph Zimbardi, running for the seat being vacated by Trustee Ken Kraft, also narrowly won a term as a trustee against 10-year resident and Manorhaven Liberty candidate

Walter E. Peters. Zimbardi received 375 votes to Peters’ 368. In a statement posted to the Manorhaven Liberty Party’s Facebook group, Peters called the campaign “an amazing experience.” “I met new friends and neighbors and listened to all your concerns,” Peters said. “This experience fuels our passion to fight hard to preserve the community we love.” Continued on Page 42
