Town law would ban marijuana retail stores

Third proposal to regulate drug as state moves toward legalization BY T E R I W EST The Town of North Hempstead is drafting a law that would ban recreational marijuana retail stores, said Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Dina! De Giorgio. The proposed law is the third being considered by the town to regulate the sale of marijuana. The first two laws would create zoning regulations on where a medical marijuana dispensary could be located and bar medical marijuana facilities from selling marijuana to nonpatients if recreational use becomes legal in New York. The town was to hold a public hearing on the two laws on Wednesday. The board planned to set a public hearing date for the third law on Wednesday, and the hearing will likely be in January, De Giorgio said. The legislative move comes in anticipation of New York poten-

tially legalizing marijuana next year and in response to residents protesting a medical marijuana dispensary’s proposed move to Northern Boulevard. “We’re about to legalize something that is a drug, so I’m against it,” De Giorgio said. “I think that’s not the kind of retail that people want to see in the Town of North Hempstead. If the constituents were really in favor of it that would be one thing, but I’m only hearing people that agree with banning the sale.” Voices she has heard have mostly been from Manhasset, including thousands who signed a petition against a request from MedMen, an operator of medical marijuana dispensaries, to relocate a current facility in Lake Success to a retail location on Northern Boulevard, she said.
