The history of the Port Washington Fire Department

The Port Washington Volunteer Fire Department

The three original fire companies in Port Washington - Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 (1886), Protection Engine Company No. 1 (1892), and Flower Hill Hose Company No. 1 (1905) - were all organized years before the Port Washington Fire Department was formed. The fire companies all operated independently of any central command until 1907. Up until that time they all pulled together when fighting fires. In 1894 Protection and Atlantic agreed to appoint a Protection member, Eugene E. Carpenter, as Chief for the purpose of commanding both companies at a fire scene. Although the “fire department” wasn’t yet organized, E.E. Carpenter was the first fire chief of the community.

Department Organized

Even though there was cooperation at the scene of a fire, it became evident that there was the need for an official organization to coordinate all the activities of the community’s fire service. In the beginning of January 1907, a group known as the “Committee of Nine” (three members from each company) began meeting. On January 28, 1907 a proposed constitution and by-laws were submitted to each of the companies for approval. On February 18, 1907

the committee appointed Captain Frederick J. Snow of Flower Hill Hose Company No. 1 as its Chairman, and on March 25, 1907 a meeting was held of the membership of all three companies at Liberty Hall (the headquarters of Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company No. 1), “... for the purpose of effecting a permanent organization and for the election of officers for the same.”

The combined membership voted to form the new Port Washington Fire Department the purpose of which, “... shall be the extinguishment of fires and the protection of life and property.” The newly elected officers that were unanimously voted into office:

There weren’t a great number of fires in the early years and the members would put

much of their efforts into training, maintaining equipment, and raising money to operate the fire companies and the Department.

Early Fund Raising

Beginning in 1909 the Port Washington Fire Department would sponsor a local tournament and parade which became known as “Firemen’s Day”.

Four contests were held:

Hose and Ladder Contest - a contest that involved running 100 yards, pulling a ladder from the truck, placing it in position and ascending to the top rung.

Single Ladder Climbing Contest - with a ladder already standing, participants would run fifty feet and climb to the top rung in the shortest time possible.

Double Wet Hose Contest- a contest that involved a 100 yard run, stretching 100 feet of hose, attaching it to a hydrant, uncoupling the hose, attaching the nozzle and water to be thrown.

Bucket Line Contest.

“Firemen’s Day” was an annual event until about 1920. Probably one of the most interesting (and exhausting) feats of the day was the line of march. The typical parade route started at the tournament arch on Webster Avenue, then proceeded to Monroe Street, to Main Street, up Main

Street to Monfort’s Corner (Port Washington Boulevard & Main Street), to Bernard Street, to Maryland Avenue, back to Main Street, to Mackey Avenue, to Bayview Avenue, to Shore Road (Plandome Road), around Bayles’ Corner (corner of Shore Road & Main Street), down Shore Road to the residence of Jacob Cocks (Pleasant Avenue), back up Shore Road to Main Street (Bayles’ Corner), up Main Street to Monroe then to Webster Avenue and ending back at the arch. At the time the roads were primarily dirt and the members of all the fire companies wore “white duck” pants as part of their uniforms!

By 1915 a much needed law was passed in New York State to provide tax revenue for fire protection each year based upon assessed valuation. A contract was signed with the Town of North Hempstead for fire protection services. Heretofore all operating funds were obtained through fund raising activities put on by the firemen or ladies auxiliaries from each of the fire companies. Another advantage of signing the contract with the Town was that all volunteer members would now be able to receive benefits under the Healey Law with respect to injuries at fires or official activities of the fire companies.

About the Port Washington Public Library

In 1892, the Women’s Club of Port Washington organized the community’s first library service with books donated by members. They met in two afternoons in the home of Miss Wilhelmina Mitchell on Main Street near the waterfront. Fundraising events included peach festivals, card parties, and musical evenings. The Library was chartered as a Free Library by New York State in 1895 with a collection of 370 volumes and was open nine hours a week.

In 1924, voters approved spending on a new building, and construction began in November 1925 on a side street off Main. The Library was granted a charter on January 1st, 1925, under the corporate name of Port Washington Public Library (PWPL).

Since that day, services have continued to expand and evolve. Providing the latest book titles and exciting events, workshops, Story Times, and seminars remains essential to PWPL’s offerings. The Library has worked to end the digital divide within the community by offering loanable laptops, mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, and

other devices. Along with in-person services, patrons can access various online services; online tutoring, virtual language training, digital storybooks for kids, eBooks, audiobooks, comics, music, movies, and much more.

Port Washington Public Library’s current Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, Vanessa Nastro, takes readers into the detailed and comprehensive history of Port Washington and Manhasset Bay in her debut book, Along Manhasset Bay.

THE GUGGENHEIM FUND FOR THE PROMOTION OF AERONAUTICS

The Guggenheim Family had an immense impact on the development of aeronautics and space travel as the primary sponsor of two of the greatest figures in these fields: the legendary aviator Charles A. Lindbergh and the father of modern

rocketry Dr. Robert H. Goddard, whose ingenuity propelled the American space program for decades to come.

The Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics was established by Daniel Guggenheim and his son, Harry F. Guggenheim, in June 1926; in the following four years, the Fund provided $3 million in grants to establish schools and research centers at New York University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and California Institute of Technology, among many others.

From July to October, 1927, the Fund also sponsored a 22,350-mile flying tour of the United States by Charles Lindbergh, on his plane, The Spirit of St. Louis, after his solo non-stop flight from New York to Paris in May 1927. The Guggenheim Tour included visits to 82 cities in 48 states, where Lindbergh gave 147 speeches promoting aviation for the general public.

Long before Starbucks commanded one of the busiest corners in town, and long before Commuter’s Stationery occupied the exact same corner, the Victoria Hotel served for several decades at the corner of Main Street and Haven Avenue. This view, taken from across Main Street, shows

the corner with Main Street heading off to the right (where this couple is walking) and Haven Avenue heads up to the left (where you can see carriage tracks having made the turn). You can even faintly see the trolley tracks on Main Street.

The Victoria Hotel was built in

1905 by local builder Walter Mullon, just a few years after the Long Island Rail Road came to Port Washington, ushering in the swift development of Port Washington as a commuting town. At the time, Main Street was still named Flower Hill Avenue (renamed to Main Street in 1912) and

Port Washington’s largest hotel boasted a bowling alley, a pool table and “Electric Illumination!”. It was torn down in 1928.

The Hotel Renwick / Diwan Indian Restaurant

You may know this building as Diwan, the wonderful Indian restaurant next to the Mill Pond. For more than 125 years and through many changes of ownership, this beautiful building with

the cross-gambrel roofl ine has sat sentry over Manhasset Bay. For many decades it was a hotel, welcoming diners and lodgers alike, before the arrival of the Long Island Railroad started the transfor-

mation of Port Washington into a commuting town. Featured below is easily one of the fi nest postcard views of early Port Washington, originally called Cow Neck. It was probably photographed by John Witmer, showing the Hotel Renwick at the center, and the bustling life encircling the Mill Pond circa 1905. The hotel has a nicely hand painted orange roof on this postcard,

and to the right you can see sand trestles and actual sandbanks, which stretched all the way north to where Sousa School stands today. This view was taken from up on the hill at the Down Neck School, later renamed the Sands Point School.

A former Port Washington resident, David Smith, adds that “before it was the Renwick, it was called the Grapevine Hotel, run by my

Great Grandparents Henry and Emma Smith as early as 1870. Henry became ill in 1899 and Ren Smull took it over. There was a fi re in 1901 and it was referred to as the Renwick in the NY Times and the Grapevine in the Brooklyn Eagle, so the name had to have been changed about that time. There are articles in the Eagle referring to the Grapevine thought the 1890’s.”

The history of the Flower Hills Schools

Picture the Port Washington Police Department’s building on Port Washington Boulevard. Here it is, almost new, in the 1950’s.

Now picture that spot almost 150 years earlier. It’s 1869, just four years after Civil War ended. Just a few years earlier, John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer fatally as-

sassinated President Abraham Lincoln in Ford’s Theater, just 5 weeks after Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address.

250 miles north of Washington, D.C., the little village of Cow Neck had recently changed its name to Port Washington. Although the town was growing, there were fewer than 750 people,

most of them involved in shell fishing or the brand new industry of sand mining.

This area was often referred to as Up-Neck, as opposed to the area north of Baxter Homestead, which was Down-Neck, with the “DownNeck School” over-looking the Mill Pond. By 1869 the Up-Neckers needed a school of their own, and so property was purchased from the Onderdonk family who had extensive land holdings in town. By summer’s end, a new two-

room schoolhouse was built, and named the Flower Hill School.

By the end of the century, several additional rooms and a second floor had been added, to accommodate Port Washington’s population, which had reached 1200.

By 1908 Port boasted three schools, the down neck Sands Point School overlooking the Mill Pond, and the new Main Street School, and this Flower Hill School.

Sadly, after more than

five decades of educating the youth of town, the beautiful little Flower Hill schoolhouse succumbed to an accidental fire. According to school superintendent Paul D. Schreiber, the janitor, William Allen, had been burning refuse when the fire got out of control and ignited some nearby kerosene. The fire quickly spread and burned the building beyond repair on June 24th, 1924.

The school had served several generations of school children for 55 years.

By the way, the term “Flower Hill” first appeared on local maps as the name of the cemetery behind the Post Office, usually referred to as the Monfort Cemetery. [The third Flower Hill School was on today’s Campus Drive, but that’s a story for another day.]

Port Washington’s little church that could

The late Rev. D.L. Austin established the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in his own home in 1920 with six other founding members.

He was a skilled carpenter who set out at once to build a house of God on the corner of Avenue A and Valley Road and moved his congregation there in 1921.

The original building was the essence of simplicity: 18 by 36 feet, a gable roof, a clapboard exterior – a fine example of vernacular church architecture in the early 20th century.

Austin was fond of saying “this church will be too small to be played with, and a little too small to be played in, just large enough to serve the Lord.”

His words ring true 98 years later.

The six founding members gave shelter to many Af-

ro-Americans migrating from the south to work in the great estates in nearby Sands Point.

Sister Marjorie Simon, the granddaughter of Austin, remembers her mother telling her that her grandmother always told the newcomers: “You live in my house, you come to my church.” Thus, the congregation grew.

Back then, church on Sundays at Mount Pleasant was an all-day affair that included morning services, Sunday school, a community lunch, socializing, recreation, and games. It was a time for the church members to gather together for a day of rest away from the chores of everyday life.

Mount Pleasant is in a neighborhood once known as Hicksville. Its boundary ran along Middle Neck Road across from what is now the Sands Point Village Club, down Harbor Road to Valley Road, and back up Avenue C.

It was named after John Hicks who had farmed the land in

the late nineteenth century, and had a home and a barn across the street from Mount Pleasant Church.

In the mid-twentieth century, Hicksville, an ethnic mix of Afro-American, Polish, and Italian workers, flourished.

Italian entrepreneurs ran a grocery store, a shoe repair, and a pool room nearby on Avenue A.

On the other side of Avenue A, there was a Polish meat market, and just up Valley Road, the Polish-American

Hall was built in 1937. Mount Pleasant stands as a cultural reminder of that time.

Simon looks back fondly on her time in Hicksville: “Whenever someone needed help, the community pulled together to help out. That’s what it was like.” When she left home to attend nursing school in the ‘50s, she was taken aback by the racial tension she encountered away from Port.

In 1990, the footprint of Mount Peasant was extended on the east and south sides to create office and meeting space. Wheelchair access was added. The axis of the nave shifted from N-S to E-W and a rounded window behind the pulpit was added for light. The alterations did not diminish its spiritual and architectural integrity.

The current pastor, James Furman, likes to talk about the “power of collective faith.” He comes across in private conversation as a warm, softspoken man who is more in-

terested in listening than talking; but when he steps up to the pulpit, he proves himself to be a dynamic and inspiring speaker. Congregants sing and clap with enthusiasm and have the opportunity to speak about their faith.

This house of God in which they worship speaks to us about their faith as well. The small, interior space fosters their belief in an intimate relationship with Jesus. Its architecture exudes the same honesty, simplicity, and humility that characterizes the congregation.

The congregation, in turn, has preserved both the building and its spirit, and so the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has endured for almost 100 years.

Port Washington’s early shoreline

Before the railroad came to Port Washington in 1898, the center of town was the shoreline. On the north end, local commerce centered around the Mill Pond and the Hotel Renwick (the same building currently occupied by Diwan). Commercial life stretched southward where several boatyards thrived near where Manhasset Bay Yacht Club is today. In between these points were fishing shacks, tidal mills, boat building and repair facilities, a fish market, a bicycle shop, steamship docks and the usual cast of characters that made up many small shore villages on Long Island.

By 1872, the Civil War of the previous decade was just beginning to recede into memory, even though it had been (and remains today) the

deadliest and most costly war in American history. A young man named Peter Hults, who had moved to Port with his brothers Issac, William and Jacob from City Island, had an idea. He would abandon his

earlier attempts at oystering, and join his brothers in local construction work. It was in that year that Peter Hults built our town’s first hotel, The Port Washington Hotel, complete with its own dock, on the shore

road across from the entrance of today’s Town Dock. [For today’s reference, as you face the road from the Town Dock’s entrance, it was located just to the left of the present home of Daniel Gale Realty.]

The Port Washington Hotel did a solid business for more than 20 years. In 1895 when Peter Hults died, it was sold to Charles Heubner who operated it as Heubner’s Hotel for a

PORT WASHINGTON HISTORY

Photos show the old Port Washington

Although the etching on the left of the image may look like hieroglyphics, it’s actually the photographer’s notation, “P-237,” from the original negative printed in reverse. The letter “P” stands for Port and his notes for 237 tell us we are looking at Miss Spencer and Mr. Landis on Carlton Avenue in February 1909.

The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society received a donation of thousands of original negatives and glass plates of photographs such as this that John S. Witmer Jr. took all over Port Washington in the early 20th century. “P-237” is one of the images from this treasure trove that Chris Bain is in the process of culling and cataloging. There’s more to come.

For now, we have this photo that Witmer took from the corner of Third and Carl-

ton looking south into the valley where Stannard Creek runs toward the bay. Spencer was a school teacher who became Witmer’s wife in 1911. Landis may be the husband of Shirley Landis, who founded the Rose Shop on Main Street that was regarded as a premier fashion store. (First names were not recorded.)

Landis, in a bowler hat, digs the heels of his shoes into the snow, ready for take-off. Spencer, in a long skirt, is leaning forward, about to give him a push. Together, their dark figures form a triangle in the foreground. The line of the sloping hill behind them converges with the road in the distance.

The two houses on Carlton are still there. The one closer to us (49 Carlton) was built by Charles Cocks in 1898. His father, Solomon Cocks, had major property holdings (the Cock’s Farm) on the north side of the Mill Pond.

Like his father, Cocks was a builder and purchased lots in his own neighborhood that were emerging from the breakup of the Mitchell Farm. In fact, he built the house next door in 1908 for his son.

They are similar structures: Victorian, front facing

gables, symmetrical facades, steep pitched roofs, and front porches. It is likely that Cocks used plans from one of the many architectural guidebooks that were popular with builders who were working for an emerging middle class that could afford to build homes

with some style.

The far background is too blurry to identify with any certainty; is that a church spire? At any rate, today the view is blocked by the apartment development on the other side of Stannard Creek. That fire hydrant poking out of the snow is still there.

What is it about an old photograph that makes it so fascinating? It could be a family photo that preserves our memories or a historical one that tells us about our collective past. If we are willing, it may stimulate our imagination; perhaps the Cocks families will come out on their front porches to see if Mr. Landis sleds smoothly by or crashes in a snow bank.

Holly Byrne, the B.I.D Executive Director, explained, “We produced and marketed a visual inspiration in the form of a 30-second video ad that illustrates the many options to build a Port Washington getaway.” The commercial will be marketed digitally to neighboring communities beyond Port Washington; locally on social media platforms and North Hempstead TV. This campaign could drive traffic to the Try Port First app which is easy to use for creating your own Port Washington getaway. “Destination Port Washington” and “Try Port First” are at the core of the mission of the Port Washington B.I.D.

The B.I.D association is governed by a Board of Directors representing commercial property owners, commercial tenants, the Town of North Hempstead and Villages, the current board of directors is dedicated to the vision to bring vibrancy and beauty to the commercial district. Dr. Bill Haagenson joined the B.I.D. board as one of the inaugural directors over 25 years ago and looks back at the inception of the Port Washington B.I.D. and says, “One of the first initiatives the B.I.D. provided to the community was installation of benches up and down Main Street, many of which you still see today. We also started the annual program to place hanging flower baskets on the lampposts.” Dr. Haagenson went on to explain, “I think the most impactful initiatives we offer today is the grant program for new and current businesses to incentivize upgrades to facades and signs.”

Dedication across generations continues with the most recently elected B.I.D. Director, Nadine Delmonte. Nadine shares her inspiration by saying, “I felt it was important to help and be part of our community and our business improvement district by following in the footsteps of my father, Guy LaMotta. He had a passion for helping the waterfront district and the businesses in Port Washington be prosperous. I know he wanted me to be on this board and be part of its success. Being part of this community for so many decades, both as a business owner and resident, I know what Port Washington can offer; it’s a majestic, historical and amazing community.”

Port’s Field of Dreams, 1903

Today our Manhasset nine are crossing bats with the clam diggers and no doubt it’s going to be a rowdy affair. Let’s hope it doesn’t get out of hand the way it did last time, and the rivalry stays on the ball field. Port has a fast team, but we aren’t as slow as they think, and I’m thinking they could be in for a surprise because we’ve got a crack twirler in the box.

It’s standing room only on the train.

Two minutes after we packed in like sardines in Manhasset and left the station, the train stopped somewhere in the middle of nowhere. It seems that the conductor needed extra time to punch tickets.

While we wait, we

start making some noise for our boys. It’s crowded, hot, and sweaty. In other words, it stinks.

The entrance to Bradley’s Field is across the street from the railroad station alongside of the Central Hotel. Passing through the gate, you come into foul territory in the outfield along the left field line.

Over on the right, there are benches around the infield for the teams and the rooters. Looks like the clam diggers have got the best seats. Beyond the infield, there’s nothing but trees.

But first I’m going to get a Wurzburger and look for a local to give me good odds on the game. That shouldn’t be too hard since their rooters are riding high these days and don’t realize

how good we are.

Last time I was here, you couldn’t get a drink in this part of town. Bradley has been good enough to open a bar and grill in the hotel.

Bradley’s bar, Bradley’s grounds, Bradley’s nine. He’s even got some rooms to rent in the ho-

tel, and I forgot to mention that he is the manager of the team for the Port Washington Field Club, which is how it came to be called Bradley’s team.

Nobody’s making much money passing the hat during the game, but with the crowds coming here on Sundays to so-

cialize and have a good time, he’s doing just fine.

When a player hits the horsehide into the trees behind home plate, the opposing team has to fetch it. Same goes if a hickory hefter hits a home run.

The difference is that home run territory

here is cow pasture. When “Husky” Erb steps up to the plate, the clam diggers go wild.

I’m guessing he’s semi-pro. As much as they want a corker into the cow pasture to win the game, I think they want to see one of our boys step in some cow dung.

Husky let them down this time, and we went on to win 2-1.

I left with enough money to pay for the beer and the ride home. And a noisy ride it was, no matter the crowd or the heat or the smell.

few years. However in 1900, the hotel was sold for the last time, and for more than 60 years, would be known far and wide as Bradley’s.

Let me give you a sense of

where you are. Remember that Sunset Park, where the Sousa Bandshell is today, was made years later from landfill. But its not here yet. The Town Dock would be built a few years after this photograph was taken. Take a look:

According to reports, John Bradley always wanted a restaurant on the shore and the Bradley’s thrived under his stewardship. New York’s high society and politicians alike became regular customers, including the Vanderbilts,

the Astors, William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, New York City Mayor Jimmy Walker, prize fighter Jack Dempsey, Broadway legend George M. Cohan, humorist Will Rogers and many others. The Bradley family reach

stretched beyond the hotel, constructing the Bradley Building where Brothers All Market stood for several decades at 83 Main Street. Later, the Bradley family bought and developed property across from the train station and John’s two children, Herbert and Irma had avenues named for them. They ran the hotel after their father’s death in 1943, finally selling the aging restaurant in 1959.

The hotel finally caught fire in February, 1962, ending almost a century of the finest dining and hospitality ever seen in these parts.

In the early years a major problem was alerting the members of a fire. The fledgling phone system was based in the old village (lower Main Street). Although a bell was located on Flower Hill Hose Company’s firehouse on Haven Avenue, the main alerting came from the ringing of the bell located at Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company on Carlton Avenue in the old village. That bell was quite a distance from Flower Hill and, depending on the direction of the wind, it was not always heard. On many occasions there would be a delay in responding to fires. In the same respect when the bell at Flower Hill was rung it might not be heard in the old village.

The firefighters experimented with a variety of alternatives from placing a whistle at the train station and having it activated by their steam system to actually having the trains in the yard blow their whistles. Finally, in 1919, a whistle was installed on Flower Hill Hose Company’s firehouse. Fire calls were made to the Long Island Railroad office and one of their employees would run across the street and activate the alarm.

It would not be until 1923 that an adequate alerting system was purchased by the Port Washington Taxpayer’s Association for use by the Department. That system was installed at both Flower Hill Hose Company on Haven Avenue and Protection Engine Company on South Washington Street. When needed it was activated by the police department.

Period of Modernization & Expansion

In 1954, the audible alarms (horns and sirens) throughout the community were renovated and

supplemented. As the community grew and housing was built farther from the center of town, additional equipment was needed to alert the firefighters who lived in those outlying areas. Later, in 1968, the alerting system was augmented by “Plectron” radio receivers that were issued to each member and kept in their houses. Years later personal pagers were issued and are still in use today.

Up through 1956, the Chiefs used their personal vehicles to conduct Department business, including responding to fires. The wear and tear on the vehicle was a substantial personal expense for

a chief officer. In 1957 the Department purchased its first Chief’s car. The Port Washington News reported it was, “equipped with a two way radio and special spot lights as well as a fire siren. It is expected to play an important role in fire fighting in this area.”

The ambulance had been housed at a private garage since the service first began in 1927. It became necessary to provide a more suitable location and in 1961 a new headquarters building for the Department was constructed at 423 Port Washington Boulevard across from police headquarters. The building not only housed the ambulance and the supplies needed for its operation, but it also provided administrative space for the Chiefs and Fire Marshal to conduct Department business.

Changing with the Times

Along with the increased regulations came more record keeping and reporting. And, the public was demanding more fiscal accountability as well. This burden severely stressed both the administrative and line officers, all of whom had to devote as much time to paper-

work as they did to firefighting. So, during the 1990s the Department altered its structure to include an administrative board of directors and a paid office manager. This was soon followed by the hiring of several personnel to handle the varied maintenance tasks that were previously performed by the volunteer members. This allowed the members to devote their volunteer hours to training, fighting fires and responding to EMS incidents.

Today, like all volunteer fire departments throughout the country, the Port Washington Fire Department is dealing with the reality of having to respond to more emergency calls with fewer people. We are proud to say that we are meeting the challenge. The volunteer spirit is strong; the dedication of our members unswerving; their attitude is professional; and their commitment to the Port Washington Fire Department and the community of Port Washington will continue on.

A treasure hunt in Port Washington

Those of us who rely on the internet or phone service to order flowers instead of paying a visit to a local florist miss out on the old-fashioned retail experience. And if you live in Port Washington, I am not talking about smelling the flowers. I’m talking about a hidden treasure from 100 years ago.

• Hint No. 1: You can find it at S.F. Falconer, Florist.

• Hint No. 2: It’s not a flower.

• Hint No. 3: You need to know a little local history.

Fred Falconer’s grandfather, Simon Frederick, came to the US in the early 20th century from Scotland where he had been trained in gardening and agriculture.

He found work in Jericho and later as the head groundskeeper and greenhouse supervisor at the Harry Guggenheim Estate in Sands Point. He must have been politically savvy and a model employee, for

when he decided to resign and go into business for himself, he departed on very good terms.

So good, in fact, that Harry gave the young entrepreneur his wholehearted support. First, he

turned his considerable estate business over to him, a gesture that paved the way for other estate holders in Sands Point to do business with S.F. Falconer, Florist. Then came our hid-

den treasure. Since Harry was now outsourcing his business, he gave Simon the Guggenheim greenhouse he had been supervising.

They moved it to Simon’s property on South Maryland where it still functions as one of four greenhouses. The exact year of the move and of the founding of his business is between 1920 and 1924, depending on whom you are talking to.

It is also a matter of credible speculation that Simon himself may have built the greenhouse for the Guggenheims five or ten years before.

Falconer has been a family business in the truest sense. As much a gathering place for the family as it is a business, it has been passed from father to son for three generations from Simon to Fred and

now to Fred Jr.

Spouses and siblings were always a part of its operation. Children grew up there, learning the business from the bottom up.

Now that the Guggenheim greenhouse has passed its 100th anniversary and S.F. Falconer is about to, Fred has placed a Historical Designation Plaque from the Cow Neck Historical Society in the greenhouse to honor the occasion and simplify your treasure hunt.
